Understanding and monitoring soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is crucial for ecosystem carbon cycling, services, and addressing global environmental challenges. This study employs the BERTopic model and bibliometric trend analysis exploration to comprehensively analyze global SOC estimates. BERTopic, a topic modeling technique based on BERT (bidirectional encoder representatives from transformers), integrates recent advances in natural language processing. The research analyzed 1761 papers on SOC and remote sensing (RS), in addition to 490 related papers on machine learning (ML) techniques. BERTopic modeling identified nine research themes for SOC estimation using RS, emphasizing spectral prediction models, carbon cycle dynamics, and agricultural impacts on SOC. In contrast, for the literature on RS and ML it identified five thematic clusters: spatial forestry analysis, hyperspectral soil analysis, agricultural deep learning, the multitemporal imaging of farmland SOC, and RS platforms (Sentinel-2 and synthetic aperture radar, SAR). From 1991 to 2023, research on SOC estimation using RS and ML has evolved from basic mapping to topics like carbon sequestration and modeling with Sentinel-2A and big data. In summary, this study traces the historical growth and thematic evolution of SOC research, identifying synergies between RS and ML and focusing on SOC estimation with advanced ML techniques. Measuring the chemical traits of leaf litter is important for understanding plants' influence on nutrient cycles, including through nutrient resorption and litter decomposition, but conventional leaf trait measurements are often destructive and labor-intensive. Here, we develop and evaluate the performance of partial least-squares regression models that use reflectance spectra of intact or ground leaves to estimate leaf litter traits, including carbon and nitrogen concentration, carbon fractions, and leaf mass per area (LMA). Our analyses included more than 300 samples of senesced foliage from 11 species of temperate trees, including both needleleaf and broadleaf species. Across all samples, we could predict each trait with moderate-to-high accuracy from both intact-leaf litter spectra (validation R2 = 0.543–0.941; %root mean squared error (RMSE) = 7.49–18.5) and ground-leaf litter spectra (validation R2 = 0.491–0.946; %RMSE = 7.00–19.5). Notably, intact-leaf spectra yielded better predictions of LMA. Our results support the feasibility of building models to estimate multiple chemical traits from leaf litter of a range of species. In particular, intact-leaf spectral models allow non-destructive trait estimation in a matter of seconds, which could enable researchers to measure the same leaves over time in studies of nutrient resorption. The important role of soil carbon pools in coping with climate change has become widely recognized. Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) is an economically important bamboo species in South China; however, owing to factors such as rising labor costs and increasingly stringent environmental policies, Moso bamboo forests have recently been abandoned. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of abandonment on structural factors and soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in Moso bamboo forests. We investigated Moso bamboo forests subjected to intensive management or abandonment for different durations and measured forest structural characteristics, mineral properties, soil nutrients, and other soil properties. Although abandonment did not significantly affect the height and diameter at breast height, it increased culm densities, biomass, and SOC stocks. The drivers of SOC stocks depended on soil depth and were mainly controlled by carbon decomposition mediated by soil properties. In the topsoil, mineral protection and soil total nitrogen (TN) exerted significant effects on SOC stocks; in the subsoil, soil TN was the main driver of SOC stocks. As the controlling factors of SOC stocks differed between the subsoil and topsoil, more attention should be paid to the subsoil. Overall, these findings refine our understanding of the structural characteristics and SOC stocks associated with Moso bamboo forest abandonment, serving as a reference for the follow-up management of these forests. The glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is an important component of soil organic carbon (SOC), which plays an important role in maintaining soil structural stability, soil carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) fixation. However, little is known about the GRSP content in soil and its contribution to soil nutrients in plantations of different tree species. In this study, we determined the soil physicochemical characteristics and GRSP contents in different soil layers of four kinds of plantations, including Acacia mangium (AM), Pinus caribaea (PC), Eucalyptus urophylla (EU), and Magnoliaceae glanca (MG), to address how the plantation types affected the GRSP in different layers of soil in southern China. The results showed that with an increase in soil depth, the GRSP content decreased linearly, and the contribution rate of GRSP to SOC and total nitrogen (TN) in deep soil was 1.08–1.18 times that in surface soil. The tree species significantly affected the vertical distribution of GRSP in soil. Among the four plantations, the conifer species PC had the highest level of GRSP, while the N-fixing species AM had the lowest level. However, SOC, soil capillary porosity (CP), TN, soil water content (SWC), and total phosphorus (TP) were important factors regulating soil GRSP content. Additionally, the regulation effects of soil properties on GRSP were various in surface and deep soil among different plantations. In order to improve soil quality and C sequestration potential, conifer species can be planted appropriately, or conifer species and N-fixing species can be mixed to increase soil nutrient content and enhance soil structure and function in afforestation of southern China. The main aim of this study was to assess the amount of carbon (C) stored in the upper 30 cm layer of mineral soils in eucalypt plantations in Portugal, with a Mediterranean-type climate. Soil sampling data (2468 samples), field evaluations (soil profile description) and relevant information on the particle size distribution, climate, bedrock and reference soil group were accomplished. Bulk density per sample was assessed using pedo-transfer functions and soil C stock was estimated. The results showed an average of 41.2 t C ha−1 stored in the soil. In the northern regions of Portugal, the coldest and wettest areas of the country with better stand productivity, a higher soil organic carbon (SOC) is achieved (median SOC of 39.2 g kg−1 and soil C stock of 55 t ha−1) than in southern and inland regions, with a warmer and drier climate (median SOC of 15.2 g kg−1 and soil C stock of 28 t ha−1). The assessment of mean soil C stock per bedrock type revealed higher C stored in granites followed by conglomerates, coal shales and clay shales. Regarding soil type, the results showed a higher C stock in Cambisols, Leptosols and Fluvisols (>50 t C ha−1), whereas Regosols and Luvisols stored less, following the same trend presented for reference soil groups in Europe. Comparing the geographic distribution of the C stock in the upper layer of the mineral soils with the amount of C in eucalyptus stands (root and aboveground biomass—data from national forest inventory), the mineral soil pool can represent more than two-thirds of the total C stored in eucalyptus plantations in Portugal. Studying the impact of typical vegetation types in forest conversion zones on soil organic carbon (SOC) structure and stability is crucial for developing terrestrial ecosystem carbon sequestration strategies. In this study, we selected three typical forest stands in the Nanling National Nature Reserve: a primary evergreen broad-leaved forest (BL), a secondary mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest (ML), and a Chinese fir plantation (CL). Soil samples were collected to examine the SOC fractions and carbon pool management index (CPMI) in three forest stands. The influence of soil property factors on SOC fractions was also analyzed. The results showed that the transformation process from a BL to an ML or a CL changed the structure and stability of organic carbon by reducing the labile SOC fractions and increasing the recalcitrant carbon fraction in the soil. The higher lability index (LI) and CPMI of soils in the BL indicated better carbon accumulation and activity, making this treatment more advantageous for management strategies aimed at promoting natural forest renewal and ecological restoration. Correlation and RDA analysis revealed that the availability of soil P was a key factor limiting the variation in organic C fractions in the acidic soils of tropical forests in South China. Canopy gaps can result in abiotic heterogeneities and diverse niches from gap borders to centers, potentially affecting fine root decompositions mediated by soil fungal communities. Despite extensive discussions on the relationship between soil fungi and fine root decomposition, the mechanism by which gap locations regulate fine root decomposition through the soil fungal community remains elusive. Here, we conducted an in situ field decomposition experiment of Chinese Toon (Toona sinensis) fine roots in a low-efficiency weeping cypress (Cupressus funebris) plantation forest across three microhabitats: gap centers, gap borders, and closed canopy areas. Soil fungal communities were determined using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing after two years of field incubation. Results showed that soil properties and nutrient content in residual roots varied across the three microhabitats, with the gap borders exhibiting the highest decomposition rates. While fungal α-diversity remained relatively consistent, taxonomic compositions differed significantly. Decomposition rates did not show significant correlations with soil properties, observed fungal ASVs, or overall community composition. However, they positively correlated with the relative abundance of saprotrophic Sordariomycetes, which in turn positively correlated with soil total nitrogen (with a highest correlation), peaking at the gap borders. Overall community variations were primarily driven by soil temperature and magnesium content in residual roots. Further analysis revealed high fungal community similarities and low dispersal limitations between the gap borders and closed canopy areas, with more phylogenetically clustered communities at the borders. These results demonstrate that the gap borders possess a high decomposition rate, likely due to the centralization of functions driven by soil fungi such as saprotrophs existing in the "microbial seed bank" or migrating from closed canopy areas. These findings highlight the key role of soil fungi, especially saprotrophic fungi, in fine root decomposition at the gap borders, stressing the importance of soil fungi-driven mechanisms in nutrient cycling, and also informing sustainable forest management practices. Clear-cutting is the most robust intervention in a forest ecosystem, causing marked changes in ecosystem processes. Although the effects of forest harvesting have been widely investigated, comparative studies can provide vital supplementary information concerning specific fields, including changes in soil microbiota structure and functioning. Our study examined the soil bacterial community composition, diversity, and activity of a mixed pedunculate oak stand over three years after clear-cutting based on 16S rRNA sequencing and substrate-induced respiration data. In addition, we conducted a yearly comparison with a control oak stand already in the regeneration phase. According to our results, the forest harvest caused only limited changes in the diversity, structure, and activity of the soil bacterial community of the oak stand, suggesting that soil parameters influence the soil bacterial community structure and functioning more significantly than the cessation of forest cover. Biological denitrification is a generally economically viable and reliable technology for nitrate (NO3−-N) and nitrite (NO2−-N) removal from wastewater. Nitrate/nitrite reduction requires an electron donor, which can be supplied from influent wastewater organic compounds, added as an external carbon source, or by endogenous respiration. Decisions regarding the selection of an external carbon source should take into consideration its cost, sludge generation quantity, the rate and efficiency of denitrification, and chemical storage safety. The expense of waste management and external carbon sources accounts for up to 50% of the overall cost of wastewater treatment. The carbon source characteristics required for biological denitrification affect the microbial community structure, denitrification rate, and intermediate products. This review is based on a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review providing information and insight into the topic of the denitrification process using different carbon sources. In this review, the main focus was on discussing alternative carbon sources vs. traditional carbon sources in terms of the carbon source price, C/N ratio, denitrification efficiency and rate, operational parameters, and advantages and disadvantages, as well as the limitations in the denitrification process. Future perspectives may include the operating parameters influencing the stability of the removal performance; the maintenance and improvement of nitrate removal; a study of the diversity of the microbial community; research on the application of new alternative carbon sources in denitrification; and N2O emission detection and minimisation. Our model for optimizing stand-level wood production and carbon sinks includes individual-tree models for forest growth, an advanced model for soil carbon, detailed wood production economy, and an intertemporal objective for the value of wood production and carbon sinks/emissions. Carbon stocks include aboveground biomass and carbon in forest soil and in wood products. Optimization of the management regime, rotations and thinning timing, and type and intensity are carried out by reinforcement learning. Including the social price of carbon causes a regime switch from continuous cover forestry to clear-cuts, postponed lighter thinning, and a longer rotation, and with a high carbon price, to solutions with pure clear-cuts or solutions utilizing stands as pure carbon stocks. Carbon price has profound effects on stand values, and the bare land value may well exceed the value before a clear-cut. The total average carbon stock is maximized with harvest and a long rotation instead of "no harvesting". Bioenergy, carbon capture, and storage (BECCS) always increases the value of wood production but not necessarily the value of carbon sinks. Wildfires have short- and long-term impacts on the geoenvironment, including the changes to biogeochemical and mechanical properties of soils, landfill stability, surface- and groundwater, air pollution, and vegetation. Climate change has increased the extent and severity of wildfires across the world. Simultaneously, anthropogenic activities—through the expansion of urban areas into wildlands, abandonment of rural practices, and accidental or intentional fire-inception activities—are also responsible for a majority of fires. This paper provides an overall review and critical appraisal of existing knowledge about processes induced by wildfires and their impact on the geoenvironment. Burning of vegetation leads to loss of root reinforcement and changes in soil hydromechanical properties. Also, depending on the fire temperature, soil can be rendered hydrophobic or hydrophilic and compromise soil nutrition levels, hinder revegetation, and, in turn, increase post-fire erosion and the debris flow susceptibility of hillslopes. In addition to direct hazards, wildfires pollute air and soil with smoke and fire suppression agents releasing toxic, persistent, and relatively mobile contaminants into the geoenvironment. Nevertheless, the mitigation of wildfires' geoenvironmental impacts does not fit within the scope of this paper. Soil nitrogen (N) mineralization typically governs the availability and movement of soil N. Understanding how factors, especially functional genes, affect N transformations is essential for the protection and restoration of forest ecosystems. To uncover the underlying mechanisms driving soil N mineralization, this study investigated the effects of edaphic environments, substrates, and soil microbial assemblages on net soil N mineralization in boreal forests. Field studies were conducted in five representative forests: Larix principis-rupprechtii forest (LF), Betula platyphylla forest (BF), mixed forest of Larix principis-rupprechtii and Betula platyphylla (MF), Picea asperata forest (SF), and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica forest (MPF). Results showed that soil N mineralization rates (Rmin) differed significantly among forests, with the highest rate in BF (p < 0.05). Soil properties and microbial assemblages accounted for over 50% of the variability in N mineralization. This study indicated that soil environmental factors influenced N mineralization through their regulatory impact on microbial assemblages. Compared with microbial community assemblages (α-diversity, Shannon and Richness), functional genes assemblages were the most important indexes to regulate N mineralization. It was thus determined that microbial functional genes controlled N mineralization in boreal forests. This study clarified the mechanisms of N mineralization and provided a mechanistic understanding to enhance biogeochemical models for forecasting soil N availability, alongside aiding species diversity conservation and fragile ecosystem revitalization in boreal forests. Precise monitoring of individual crop growth and health status is crucial for precision agriculture practices. However, traditional inspection methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, prone to human error, and may not provide the comprehensive coverage required for the detailed analysis of crop variability across an entire field. This research addresses the need for efficient and high-resolution crop monitoring by leveraging Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery and advanced computational techniques. The primary goal was to develop a methodology for the precise identification, extraction, and monitoring of individual corn crops throughout their growth cycle. This involved integrating UAV-derived data with image processing, computational geometry, and machine learning techniques. Bi-weekly UAV imagery was captured at altitudes of 40 m and 70 m from 30 April to 11 August, covering the entire growth cycle of the corn crop from planting to harvest. A time-series Canopy Height Model (CHM) was generated by analyzing the differences between the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and the Digital Surface Model (DSM) derived from the UAV data. To ensure the accuracy of the elevation data, the DSM was validated against Ground Control Points (GCPs), adhering to standard practices in remote sensing data verification. Local spatial analysis and image processing techniques were employed to determine the local maximum height of each crop. Subsequently, a Voronoi data model was developed to delineate individual crop canopies, successfully identifying 13,000 out of 13,050 corn crops in the study area. To enhance accuracy in canopy size delineation, vegetation indices were incorporated into the Voronoi model segmentation, refining the initial canopy area estimates by eliminating interference from soil and shadows. The proposed methodology enables the precise estimation and monitoring of crop canopy size, height, biomass reduction, lodging, and stunted growth over time by incorporating advanced image processing techniques and integrating metrics for quantitative assessment of fields. Additionally, machine learning models were employed to determine relationships between the canopy sizes, crop height, and normalized difference vegetation index, with Polynomial Regression recording an R-squared of 11% compared to other models. This work contributes to the scientific community by demonstrating the potential of integrating UAV technology, computational geometry, and machine learning for accurate and efficient crop monitoring at the individual plant level. Extreme precipitation and flooding frequency associated with global climate change are expected to increase worldwide, with major consequences in floodplains and areas susceptible to flooding. The purpose of this review was to examine the effects of flooding events on changes in soil properties and their consequences on agricultural production. Flooding is caused by natural and anthropogenic factors, and their effects can be amplified by interactions between rainfall and catchments. Flooding impacts soil structure and aggregation by altering the resistance of soil to slaking, which occurs when aggregates are not strong enough to withstand internal stresses caused by rapid water uptake. The disruption of soil aggregates can enhance soil erosion and sediment transport during flooding events and contribute to the sedimentation of water bodies and the degradation of aquatic ecosystems. Total precipitation, flood discharge, and total water are the main factors controlling suspended mineral-associated organic matter, dissolved organic matter, and particulate organic matter loads. Studies conducted in paddy rice cultivation show that flooded and reduced conditions neutralize soil pH but changes in pH are reversible upon draining the soil. In flooded soil, changes in nitrogen cycling are linked to decreases in oxygen, the accumulation of ammonium, and the volatilization of ammonia. Ammonium is the primary form of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in sediment porewaters. In floodplains, nitrate removal can be enhanced by high denitrification when intermittent flooding provides the necessary anaerobic conditions. In flooded soils, the reductive dissolution of minerals can release phosphorus (P) into the soil solution. Phosphorus can be mobilized during flood events, leading to increased availability during the first weeks of waterlogging, but this availability generally decreases with time. Rainstorms can promote the subsurface transport of P-enriched soil particles, and colloidal P can account for up to 64% of total P in tile drainage water. Anaerobic microorganisms prevailing in flooded soil utilize alternate electron acceptors, such as nitrate, sulfate, and carbon dioxide, for energy production and organic matter decomposition. Anaerobic metabolism leads to the production of fermentation by-products, such as organic acids, methane, and hydrogen sulfide, influencing soil pH, redox potential, and nutrient availability. Soil enzyme activity and the presence of various microbial groups, including Gram+ and Gram− bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, are affected by flooding. Waterlogging decreases the activity of β-glucosidase and acid phosphomonoesterase but increases N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase in soil. Since these enzymes control the hydrolysis of cellulose, phosphomonoesters, and chitin, soil moisture content can impact the direction and magnitude of nutrient release and availability. The supply of oxygen to submerged plants is limited because its diffusion in water is extremely low, and this impacts mitochondrial respiration in flooded plant tissues. Fermentation is the only viable pathway for energy production in flooded plants, which, under prolonged waterlogging conditions, is inefficient and results in plant death. Seed germination is also impaired under flooding stress due to decreased sugar and phytohormone biosynthesis. The sensitivity of different crops to waterlogging varies significantly across growth stages. Mitigation and adaptation strategies, essential to the management of flooding impacts on agriculture, enhance resilience to climate change through improved drainage and water management practices, soil amendments and rehabilitation techniques, best management practices, such as zero tillage and cover crops, and the development of flood-tolerant crop varieties. Technological advances play a crucial role in assessing flooding dynamics and impacts on crop production in agricultural landscapes. This review embarks on a comprehensive journey through existing research to unravel the intricate interplay between flooding events, agricultural soil, crop production, and the environment. Logging operations change the forest environment by creating a heterogeneous canopy with a range of different microenvironments that differ mostly in light intensity and level of soil disturbance. In this study, the growth characteristics and architecture of beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) seedlings grown in three different microenvironments in terms of canopy and soil conditions were investigated. The experimental treatments (microenvironments) included skid trail (removal of canopy and compacted soil), winching corridor (natural canopy and compacted soil), felling gap (removal of canopy and natural soil), and comparison with the control area (canopy and soil in natural state). The results showed that the status of many growth and architectural indicators of seedlings is significantly less favorable than in the control area. These indicators include the length and biomass above and below ground, and the ratio of root length to stem length in the skid trails and winching corridors. The status of these indicators was, however, more favorable in felling gaps than in the control area. The seedling quality index decreased by −12.2% and −4.9% in skid trails and winching corridors, respectively, but increased by 2.4% in felling gaps compared to the control area. The growth characteristics and biomass of seedlings had a significant negative correlation (p < 0.01) with soil bulk density and penetration resistance and a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) with soil porosity, moisture, and organic matter content. These results showed that the creation of a gap in the stand canopy due to the cutting of individual trees created a favorable micro-environment for the growth of seedlings, but the soil compaction caused by logging operations created an unfavorable micro-environment for these. Therefore, it is necessary to plan and execute the operation of extracting the cut trees in such a manner as to reduce the extent and severity of soil compaction with the goal of preserving and maintaining the stability of the forest ecosystem. Nowadays, climate change is recognized as one of the biggest problems the world is facing, posing a potential threat to the environment and almost all aspects of human life. Since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, many efforts have been made to mitigate climate change, with no considerable results. According to climate change projections, temperatures will continue to rise, and extreme weather events will become more frequent, prolonged, and intense. Reflecting these concerns, the 2015 Paris Agreement was adopted as the cornerstone for reducing the impact of climate change, aiming to limit global warming below 2 °C and even keep the temperature rise below 1.5 °C. To achieve this international goal, focused mitigation actions will be required. Climate change has a strong impact on forests, enhancing their growth but also posing risks to them. Conversely, forests can mitigate climate change, as they have a considerable impact on global surface temperatures through their influence on the land–atmosphere energy exchange and the absorption of vast amounts of CO2 through photosynthesis. Consequently, afforestation and reforestation have become integral components of climate change mitigation strategies worldwide. This review aims to summarize the cutting-edge knowledge on the role of forests in climate change mitigation, emphasizing their carbon absorption and storage capacity. Overall, the impact of afforestation/reforestation on climate change mitigation hinges on strategic planning, implementation, and local forest conditions. Integrating afforestation and reforestation with other carbon removal technologies could enhance long-term effectiveness in carbon storage. Understanding the ecological dynamics of forest ecosystems, particularly the influence of forest age structure on soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content, is crucial for effective forest management and conservation. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient storage and ecological stoichiometry across different-aged stands of Chinese fir forests. Soil samples were collected from various depths (0–15 cm, 15–30 cm, and 30–45 cm) across four age groups of Chinese fir forests (8-year-old, 12-year-old, 20-year-old, and 25-year-old) in the Forest Farm, Pingjiang County, China. Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were measured, and their stoichiometries were calculated. The results showed that both individual tree biomass and stand biomass, along with SOC, TN, and TP content, increased with stand age, highlighting the significant importance of stand age on biomass production and nutrient accumulation in forests. Specifically, soil C and P contents significantly increased as the forest aged, while variation in N content was relatively minor. Soil C/N and C/P ratios exhibited variation corresponding to forest age, suggesting alterations in the ecological stoichiometry characteristics of the forests over time. These findings are crucial for understanding the dynamics of ecosystem functioning and nutrient cycling within Chinese fir forests and provide a solid scientific basis for the effective management and conservation of these vital forest ecosystems. Forest soils are considered the largest carbon and nitrogen pools in soil organic matter among terrestrial ecosystems, and soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are normally affected by climate change and human activity. The collection of recent research on this scientific theme would provide a basis for understanding the responses of soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics and GHG fluxes in forest ecosystems to climate change and human activity. A Special Issue was, thus, organized to discuss recent research achievements, including a total of nine research articles and one review. This Special Issue includes the effects of climate changes such as changes in throughfall, snow cover, and permafrost degradation; human activities such as nitrogen and/or phosphorus addition and the use of biochar; and soil–plant interactions on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics and GHG fluxes in forest ecosystems. Although this collection of papers reflects only a small part of this scientific theme, it can, to some extent, provide a basis for understanding some important research aspects related to the future of forest soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics and GHG fluxes in a changing world, thereby enabling sustainable development and the mitigation of climate change. The impacts of the successive planting of Eucalyptus on soil microbial communities and their underlying mechanisms remain unknown, limiting our understanding of its long-term effects on soil ecosystems. This study examined the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil layers, investigating changes in soil bacterial and fungal communities after multiple plantings of Eucalyptus grandis × urophylla using high-throughput sequencing. Furthermore, we used the structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the relationships among soil active organic carbon (SAOC), enzyme activity, and microbial diversity. The study showed that the multigeneration successive planting of Eucalyptus significantly increased the soil bulk density and decreased the soil physicochemical properties and soil enzyme activities (p < 0.05). The soil's dominant microbial compositions were unchanged in the two soil horizons, but the relative abundances of some dominant phyla (e.g., Crenarchaeota, Basidiomycota and Actinobacteriota) were affected by successive planting. The variability in the microbial community structure was influenced primarily by the soil water content (SWC) and organic carbon (p < 0.05). The microbial community diversity in the 20–40 cm horizon was significantly affected by multigeneration succession (p < 0.05). SWC was the core factor driving microbial community diversity. SEM results showed that multigeneration successive planting obviously limits SAOC fractions and enzyme activities, negatively affecting soil microbial diversity. Our study highlights the impact of the multigeneration successive planting of Eucalyptus on soil microbial community structure and suggests adjustments in forestry practices to mitigate soil degradation. The regulation of stand density has been studied in specific aspects of plantations with different age categories. A clearer understanding is still required of the extent to which stand density impacts multiple plantation attributes such as tree growth, understory vegetation diversity, and soil properties in Korean pine (Pinus koraeinsis Sieb. et Zucc) plantations. This study utilized a 43-year-old middle-aged Korean pine plantation in Qingping Forest Farm in northeast China to answer the research question posed. Three stand density levels, low stand density (LSD, 716 trees/ha), medium stand density (MSD, 850 trees/ha), and high stand density (HSD, 916 trees/ha) were studied for their effects on plantation attributes enumerated above. The results revealed a significant (p < 0.05) effect of stand density on mean stand volume (m3). Medium stand density had the highest mean stand volume of 26.16 (±0.27) m3 while the lowest stand volume was recorded for the low stand density at 14.90 (±1.72) m3. Also, significant differences in total nitrogen, total potassium, available nitrogen, available potassium, and percentage soil moisture content were observed among stand density levels. Additionally, stand density was found to have significant effects on species richness, Shannon–Wiener, and Simpson's diversity indexes for the shrub and herb layers of the plantation. This study shows that a medium stand density is the most optimal for promoting tree growth and understory biodiversity, as well as enhancing the status of certain soil nutrients. Thus, medium density achieves a balance between growth, nutrient availability, and biodiversity in middle-aged Korean pine plantations after a short period of thinning. Municipal solid waste (MSW) compost represents a sustainable alternative to plastic film for mulching in viticulture. This study investigated the effects of MSW compost on vineyard soil properties, specifically focusing on side effects such as soil temperature and microbial decomposition activity, independently from its role in weed control. The experiment was conducted in a vineyard located in the Mediterranean region (Southern Italy), with six different mulching treatments: black polyethylene (PE) film, black and white biodegradable film, three different amounts of MSW compost (8, 15, and 22 kg plant−1), and a control without mulching. Weed growth was monitored to determine the optimal compost application amount. The 15 kg plant−1 treatment was selected for further analyses, as it did not significantly impact weed growth compared to the control. Results indicated that MSW compost mulching maintained lower soil temperatures compared to other treatments (up to 5 °C in the warmest hours) and reduced the amplitude of the thermal wave up to 50% compared to the non-mulched soil and even more compared to black film mulched soil, particularly during the warmest periods. This suggests that MSW compost can mitigate heat stress on plant roots, potentially enhancing plant resilience and preserving crop production also in stressful growing conditions. Microbial decomposition activity, assessed using the tea bag index, was higher in the MSW compost treatment during spring compared to the control, indicating temperature as a key driver for organic matter decomposition, but this effect disappeared during summer. These findings highlight the potential of MSW compost to support sustainable viticulture by reducing reliance on synthetic mulching materials and promoting environmental sustainability through the recycling of organic municipal waste. Ectomycorrhizal fungi have huge potential value, both nutritionally and economically, but most of them cannot be cultivated artificially. To better understand the influence of abiotic and biotic factors upon the growth of ectomycorrhizal fungi, mycosphere soil and bulk soil of five ectomycorrhizal fungi (Calvatia candida, Russula brevipes, Leucopaxillus laterarius, Leucopaxillus giganteus, and Lepista panaeola) were used as research objects for this study. Illumina MiSeq sequencing technology was used to analyze the community structure of the mycosphere and bulk soil bacteria of the five ectomycorrhizal fungi, and a comprehensive analysis was conducted based on soil physicochemical properties. Our results show that the mycosphere soil bacteria of the five ectomycorrhizal fungi are slightly different. Escherichia, Usitatibacter, and Bradyrhizobium are potential mycorrhizal-helper bacteria of distinct ectomycorrhizal fungi. Soil water content, soil pH, and available potassium are the main factors shaping the soil bacterial community of the studied ectomycorrhizal fungi. Moreover, from the KEGG functional prediction and LEfSe analysis, there are significant functional differences not only between the mycosphere soil and bulk soil. 'Biosynthesis of terpenoidsand steroids', 'alpha-Linolenic acid metabolism', 'Longevity regulating pathway-multiple species', 'D-Arginine and D-ornithine metabolism', 'Nitrotoluene degradation' and other functions were significantly different in mycosphere soil. These findings have pivotal implications for the sustainable utilization of ectomycorrhizal fungi, the expansion of edible fungus cultivation in forest environments, and the enhancement of derived economic benefits. Elucidating the characteristics and underlying mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen mineralization in the context of sludge addition is vital for enhancing soil quality and augmenting the carbon sink capacity of soil. This study examined the chemical properties, enzyme dynamics, and organic carbon and nitrogen mineralization processes of soil from degraded grasslands on the Loess Plateau at various incubation temperatures (5, 15, 25, and 35 °C) and sludge addition rates (0%, 5.0%, 10.0%, and 20.0%) through a laboratory incubation experiment. The results showed that incubation temperature, sludge addition, and their interactive effects significantly altered the soil enzyme C:N, C:P, and N:P stoichiometries. The cumulative mineralization rates of SOC and nitrogen increased significantly with increasing incubation temperature and sludge addition rate. Principal component analysis revealed a significant linear correlation between cumulative SOC and nitrogen mineralization. Random forest analysis indicated that β-1,4-Glucosidase (BG), β-1,4-N-acetyglucosaminidase (NAG), cellobiohydrolase (CBH), ammonium nitrogen (NO3−), enzyme C:P ratio, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and incubation temperature were crucial determinants of cumulative SOC mineralization. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that sludge addition, NO3−, NAG, ALP, and enzyme C:P positively impacted SOC mineralization, whereas dissolved organic carbon and BG had negative impacts. Conversely, incubation temperature negatively affected soil nitrogen mineralization, whereas NO3−, available phosphorus, and ALP contributed positively. Sludge addition and temperature indirectly modulated soil net nitrogen mineralization by altering soil chemical properties and enzyme activities. Straw returning may stimulate soil microbial activity, thereby influencing microbial-mediated soil nitrification, which can lead to nitrate leaching and nitrogen (N) loss. However, its effects under long-term nitrogen fertilization remain unclear. At an experimental station with 34 years of fertilizer application (0, 135, and 270 kg ha−1 N), we investigated how nitrogen fertilization and straw returning affected the soil potential nitrification rate (PNR) and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM). Our results suggest that N fertilization concurrently inhibits soil PNR, but this inhibition can be alleviated by straw returning, particularly with low nitrogen fertilization (p < 0.05). Long-term N fertilization significantly decreased the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and complete ammonia-oxidizing bacteria cladeB (CAOB-cladeB). Straw returning increased AOA abundance and diversity, especially with low or no fertilization (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the partial least squares path model demonstrated that AOA abundance affected soil PNR by altering the AOA community. According to random forest analysis, soil pH and AOA beta diversity were the primary factors affecting soil PNR (explaining 10.76% and 10.03% of the variation, respectively). Overall, our findings highlight the importance of straw returning and AOA in soil nitrification under long-term nitrogen fertilization, emphasizing the need to consider these interactions for sustainable agriculture. Research on forest carbon storage (FCS) is crucial for the sustainable development of human society given the context of global climate change. Previous FCS studies formed the science base of the FCS field but lacked a macrolevel knowledge summary. This study combined the scientometric mapping tool VOSviewer and multiple statistical models to conduct a comprehensive knowledge graph mining and analysis of global FCS papers (covering 101 countries, 1712 institutions, 5435 authors, and 276 journals) in the Web of Science database as of 2022, focusing on revealing the macro spatiotemporal pattern, multidimensional research status, and topic evolution process of FCS research at the global scale, so as to grasp the status of global FCS research more clearly and comprehensively, thereby facilitating the future decision-making and practice of researchers. The results showed the following: (1) In the past three decades, the number of FCS papers indicated an increasing trend, with a growth rate of 4.66/yr, particularly significant after 2010. These papers were mainly from Europe, the Americas, and Asia, while there was a huge gap between Africa, Oceania, and the above regions. (2) For the research status at the national, institutional, scholar, and journal levels, the USA, with 331 FCS papers and 18,653 total citations, was the most active and influential country in global FCS research; the United States Forest Service topped the influential ranking with 4115 citations; Grant M. Domke and Jerome Chave were the most active and influential FCS researchers globally, respectively. China's activity (237 papers) and influence (5403 citations) ranked second, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most active research institution in the world. Currently, FCS research is published in a growing number of journals, among which Forest Ecology and Management ranked first in the number of papers (154 papers) and citations (6374 citations). (3) In recent years, the keyword frequency of monitoring methods, driving factors, and reasonable management for FCS has increased rapidly, and many new related keywords have emerged, which means that researchers are not only focusing on the estimation and monitoring of FCS but also increasingly concerned about its driving mechanism and sustainable development. This work examines the influence of the degradation behaviors of biotic and abiotic conditions on three types of biodegradable products: cups from PLA and from cellulose, and plates from sugarcane. The main objective of this study was to evaluate if biodegradable products can be degraded in composts that were stabilized by backyard composting. Furthermore, the impact of crucial abiotic parameters (temperature and pH) for the degradation behaviors process was investigated. The changes in the biopolymers were analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. This work confirmed that abiotic and biotic conditions are important for an effective disintegration of the investigated biodegradable products. Under abiotic conditions, the degradation behaviors of PLA were observable under both tested temperature (38 and 59 °C) conditions, but only at the higher temperature was complete disintegration observed after 6 weeks of incubation in mature compost. Moreover, our research shows that some biodegradable products made from cellulose also need additional attention, especially with respect to incorporated additives, as composting could be altered and optimal conditions in composting may not be achieved. This study shows that the disintegration of biodegradable products is a comprehensive process and requires detailed evaluation during composting. The results also showed that biodegradable products can also be degraded post composting and that microplastic pollution from biodegradable polymers in soil may be removed by simple physical treatments. Forest soil contamination is a significant problem with risks to ecosystems and human health. It reduces soil quality, hampers plant growth, and disrupts ecosystems. To understand current research and identify future directions, this study analyzed 2659 documents on forest soil contamination published on the Web of Science from 1970 to 2023. Using bibliometrics, this study systematically analyzed the knowledge structure, research hotspots, and development trends in forest soil pollution. China, the United States, and Poland were the top contributors, with 11.28%, 8.42%, and 7.15% of publications, respectively. Despite fewer publications, the Netherlands and Sweden had significant research influence. The Chinese Academy of Sciences had the most publications. The primary research topics included heavy metals, ecosystems, deposition, air pollution, and organic matter. Keyword cluster and burst analysis highlighted the importance of heavy metals, microbial communities, atmospheric deposition, and organic matter. Notably, microplastics emerged as a notable gap in the existing research by highly cited papers analysis, indicating they can be a future research focus. Bamboo and broad-leaved mixed forests have been widely recognized for their advantages in maintaining ecological balance, improving soil fertility, and enhancing biodiversity. To understand the effects of mixed broad-leaved tree species and mixing ratios on soil microbial communities in bamboo and broad-leaved mixed forests, we quantified the structure and diversity responses of soil microbial communities to tree species and mixing ratios using high-throughput sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene. Three bamboo and broad-leaved tree mixed forests were studied, including bamboo–Castanopsis chinensis Hance mixed forest (CCB), bamboo–Alniphyllum fortune (Hemsl.) Makino mixed forest (AFB), and bamboo–Choerospondias axillaris (Roxb.) B. L. Burtt & A. W. Hill mixed forest (CAB). We assessed the impact of tree species and mixing ratios on soil microbial communities by measuring soil properties and the diversity and composition of soil microbes. The results indicate that soil properties and the diversity and composition of microbial communities are highly dependent on broad-leaved tree species in mixed forests. The mixing ratios had a more pronounced effect on microbial diversity than on richness. In CAB, diversity peaked at mixing ratios of 10%–20% and 20%–40%. The presence of broad-leaved trees significantly altered the relationships among soil bacteria, with CAB showing the highest stability, likely due to the increased diversity and quantity of litter from Choerospondias axillaris. Our results show that the choice of broad-leaved tree species and their mixing ratios significantly influence soil microbial diversity and composition in bamboo–broad-leaf mixed forests. Changing environmental conditions, disturbances, and escalating demands for forest ecosystem services require foresters to restore present forestlands with new forest generations that will exhibit ecological integrity, diversity, high adaptive capacity, and the ability to provide essential ecosystem services. Establishing such forests requires careful consideration of the forest landscape and site dynamics. In pursuit of these requirements, we developed a novel framework that enables the restoration of forest sites and promotes the desired features of the forest complex at the same time. This framework was designed with the methods of system engineering and was organized in the same way as the forest planning process. It was tested in the habitat type of Illyrian Fagus sylvatica forests belonging to the Natura 2000 network. The environmental, vegetation, and site conditions were investigated via field inspections, available forest management plans, and simple GIS analyses. Additionally, we established a seminatural stand composed of European beech, sessile oak, sycamore maple, silver fir, and some wild fruit tree species. The survival of planted species was assessed using census and simple random sampling, the performance of provenances by Student's test, while microhabitat factors were explored by a one-way ANOVA. The survival rate of key species was estimated to be 55.6%, while that of fruit species was estimated to be 94.5%. Our framework demonstrated satisfactory performance and contained sufficient benchmarks to facilitate consistent decision-making. Cupressus gigantea is an endangered species mainly distributed on beach land, down-slope, and middle-slope positions along the Yarlung Zangbo River on the Tibet Plateau of China, with an altitude ranging from 3000 to 3400 m. We investigated the rhizosphere and fine root microbiomes of C. gigantea at these three slope positions through metagenomic analysis. Slope positions had a greater influence on microbiome composition in the rhizosphere than that in the fine roots. Down- and middle-slope positions presented higher microbial richness indeces and community similarity, while a more complex co-occurrence network was observed in the beach land samples. Rhizosphere bacterial community assembly was determined via deterministic processes in the beach land and via stochastic processes in the down- and middle-slope positions. Archaeal and fungal community assemblies were both dominated by stochastic processes in the rhizosphere and fine roots at the three slope positions. Nitrogen (N) functional genes were more sensitive to changes in slope positions than phosphorus (N) functional genes. Soil properties explained more than 60% and 34% of the variations in the N and P functional genes and more than 30% and 10% of the variations in the microbiomes in the rhizosphere and fine roots, respectively. Variation in the microbiome was significantly driven by total nirtogen, total potassium, pH, and soil moisture in rhizosphere, and by pH and soil moisture in fine roots. Our observations suggest that the effect of slope position on the microbiomes of C. gigantea was greater for the rhizosphere than the fine roots, with down- and middle-slope positions presenting higher community similarity. Afforestation plays a critical role in ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration. However, there continues to be insufficient knowledge about the long-term effects of different tree species on the forest soil in central subtropical China. In this study, five indigenous afforestation tree species commonly used in the region, including Bretschneidera sinensis, Liriodendron chinense, Schima superba, Phoebe bournei, and Cunninghamia lanceolata, were selected to explore their long-term effects on the forest soil. The soil's physicochemical properties, organic carbon content, enzyme activity, and respiration were investigated. Our results revealed significant differences in the soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity, organic carbon content, and soil respiration among the different tree species even with the same tree species types. Broad-leaved species, particularly L. chinense and P. bournei, exhibited superior soil physicochemical properties, higher amounts of organic carbon contents, enzyme activity, and soil respiration compared to coniferous species C. lanceolata. Notably, for the two studied evergreen tree species, P. bournei seemed to improve the forest soil quality more than S. superba. Hence, increasing the proportion of broad-leaved tree species may have a beneficial effect on the soil's physicochemical properties and microecology. Mixed plantations are garnering increased attention due to their potential to provide a broader array of benefits compared to monocultures. Although numerous studies have indicated promising complementarity between black spruce (Picea mariana) and tamarack (Larix laricina), few have delved into individual tree growth interactions to thoroughly assess early growth complementarity. We sampled 119 planted black spruce and their immediate environment to quantify and qualify any differences between two conditions in young plantations: mixed tamarack ("mixtures") and black spruce monocultures ("monocultures") within young plantations. We investigated the effect of neighbouring under four perspectives: tree competition, microenvironment, foliar nutrients, and soil nutrients. Our results showed increased values for black spruce foliar nitrogen total concentration, soil pH, and canopy closure in mixtures compared to monocultures. Furthermore, black spruce stem volume was increased by 38.1% in mixture compared to monoculture. Black spruce stem volume was negatively affected (86% decrease) by the combined effect of shrubs and non-crop trees under high competition pressure, despite the plantation being mechanically released in 2017. In the field of crop research, the study of roots involves many challenges, particularly the lack of effective methods for identifying crop roots. To deal with this problem, this study proposes a solution strategy: in applying strontium to crop leaves, the roots of different crops are distinguished. In this study, we applied strontium ions to the leaves of hydroponically grown wheat, and these strontium ions were partially absorbed by the leaves and transported to the roots. Therefore, the strontium concentration of roots was significantly increased through the foliar application of strontium. After mixing the treated wheat with the untreated wheat root, the greater the biomass of the wheat root applied with strontium ions, the higher the strontium concentration in the mixed root. Based on this phenomenon, we can establish the relationship between wheat root biomass and strontium concentration in mixed roots through linear fitting. Furthermore, we can also use the relationship between root biomass and root length to establish the correlation between strontium concentration in mixed roots and the root length of wheat with strontium ions. After measuring the strontium concentration of the mixed roots to be distinguished, the root biomass and root length of wheat applied with strontium ions can be calculated according to the equation obtained through linear fitting. The accuracy of this method was verified through a comparison with the actual value and the existing root staining method. The results show that the coefficient of determination (R2) of the root biomass estimation equation obtained through linear fitting reached 0.83, which is statistically significant (p < 0.01). The Pearson correlation coefficient with the measured value was more than 0.9, showing a very high correlation and significance. The root length estimation equation derived from the relationship between the root biomass, strontium concentration and root length was compared with the real root length value and the root length value obtained using the staining method. The Pearson correlation coefficient also exceeded 0.8 and reached a statistically significant level (p < 0.01). This study confirms that strontium ions can be absorbed and transported to roots through wheat leaves and successfully developed a new method for predicting the length of wheat roots, providing an effective new tool for wheat root research. Microbial necromass is increasingly recognized as an important fast‐cycling component of the long‐term carbon present in soils. To better understand how fungi and bacteria individually contribute to the decomposition of fungal necromass, three particle sizes (>500, 250–500, and <250 μm) of Hyaloscypha bicolor necromass were incubated in laboratory microcosms inoculated with individual strains of two fungi and two bacteria. Decomposition was assessed after 15 and 28 days via necromass loss, microbial respiration, and changes in necromass pH, water content, and chemistry. To examine how fungal–bacterial interactions impact microbial growth on necromass, single and paired cultures of bacteria and fungi were grown in microplates containing necromass‐infused media. Microbial growth was measured after 5 days through quantitative PCR. Regardless of particle size, necromass colonized by fungi had higher mass loss and respiration than both bacteria and uninoculated controls. Fungal colonization increased necromass pH, water content, and altered chemistry, while necromass colonized by bacteria remained mostly unaltered. Bacteria grew significantly more when co‐cultured with a fungus, while fungal growth was not significantly affected by bacteria. Collectively, our results suggest that fungi act as key early decomposers of fungal necromass and that bacteria may require the presence of fungi to actively participate in necromass decomposition. Hulls and shells are an abundant by-product from almond production with potential as an organic matter amendment (OMA). A combination of incubation study and field research was conducted in 2019–2021 to evaluate the impacts of three practices in combination on orchard soils' C and N cycling, including a 210-day period of laboratory incubation with hulls and shells, and field sampling of orchard soils with and without historic applications of green waste compost as an OMA; with hulls and shells and with and without off-ground harvest where orchard soils remain undisturbed year round. Hulls and shells increased microbial biomass carbon in the field study by 248 μg g−1 dry soil after one year (p < 0.001) and during incubation, and increased cumulative respiration in soils with and without historic OMA (p < 0.001). Historic OMA resulted in double the total soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) compared to soil without resulting in significantly higher respiration and N mineralization when amended with hulls and shells. The decomposition of hull and shell biomass following surface application progressed at similar rates in the laboratory and field (1.7 g kg−1 d−1 during incubation (R2 = 0.84) and 1.3 g kg−1 d−1 in the field trial (R2 = 0.91). Our results highlight the suitability of hulls and shells as a by-product source of OMA for improving soil health in orchards with historic OMA and transitioning to organic matter management. Carbon stocks provide information that is essential for analyzing the role of forests in global climate mitigation, yet they are highly vulnerable to wildfires in Mediterranean ecosystems. These carbon stocks' exposure to fire is usually estimated from specific allometric equations relating tree height and diameter to the overall amount of aboveground carbon storage. Assessments of vulnerability to fire additionally allow for specific fire resistance (bark thickness, crown basal height) and post-fire recovery traits (cone mass for regeneration, and fine branches or leaves mass for flammability) to be accounted for. These traits are usually considered as static, and their temporal dynamic is rarely assessed, thus preventing a full assessment of carbon stocks' vulnerability and subsequent cascading effects. This study aimed to measure the pools of carbon stocks of individual trees varying between 30 and 96 years old in the Djbel Mansour Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) forest in semi-arid central Tunisia in the southern range of its distribution to fit a sigmoid equation of the carbon pools and traits recovery according to age as a vulnerability framework. Allometric equations were then developed to establish the relationships between fire vulnerability traits and dendrometric independent variables (diameter at breast height, height, and live crown length) for further use in regional vulnerability assessments. The total carbon stocks in trees varied from 29.05 Mg C ha−1 to 92.47 Mg C ha−1. The soil organic carbon stock (SOC) at a maximum soil depth of 0–40 cm varied from 31.67 Mg C ha−1 to 115.67 Mg C ha−1 at a soil depth of 0–70 cm. We could identify an increasing resistance related to increasing bark thickness and basal crown height with age, and enhanced regeneration capacity after 25 years of age with increasing cone biomass, converging toward increasing vulnerability and potential cascading effects under shorter interval fires. Soil bacterial communities play a remarkable role in nutrient cycling, significantly affecting soil organic material content, soil fertility, and, in an indirect way, plant succession processes. Conversely, vegetation type influences microbial soil life. The present study compared the bacterial microbiome composition, diversity and catabolic activity profile of topsoil samples collected under three different forest types (a twice-coppiced black locust stand, a young, naturally reforested, and a middle-aged mixed pedunculate oak stand) planted on former arable land in the early 20th century. Diversity indices determined during 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing-based metagenome analysis indicated that the black locust stand had the highest soil bacterial community diversity. At the phylum level, Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobiota, Bacteroidota, and Gemmatimonadota were the most abundant taxa in the forest soils. Concerning soil parameters, redundancy analysis revealed that pH had the highest impact on bacterial community structure and pH, and soil organic carbon content on the samples' respiration patterns. As for catabolic activity, the recently clearcut oak forest showed the lowest substrate-induced respiration, and citrate was the main driver for the inter-stand variability of microbial activity. This study aimed to assess the influences of short-term straw return combined with nitrogen (N) fertilizer on crop yield, soil properties, the bacterial community, and soil nitrogen cycling gene abundance in a rice–rapeseed planting system. A two-year field experiment was conducted in a paddy field from 2019 to 2021. There were four treatments in the experiment: −N−S, no N applied with no straw return; −N+S, no N applied with straw return; +N−S, N applied with no straw return; and +N+S, N applied with straw return. The results showed that short-term straw return combined with N fertilizer could increase crop yield and N use efficiency. N fertilizer application had a positive effect on Gemmatimonadota and Desulfobacterota abundance. Straw returning had a positive effect on Desulfobacterota and Proteobacteria abundance. N fertilization significantly increased the abundance of amoA-AOA, amoA-AOB, and nxrB in agricultural soils. Straw return and N fertilization were not conducive to denitrification. We conclude that short-term straw return combined with N fertilizer in rice-growing areas not only increase crop yield and improve crop N uptake but also increase SOM, total N, and NH4+ and improve the soil microbial activity and N use efficiency. Urban parks are considered one of the most significant ecosystems when looking at urban green spaces, but ecological functions and the type of recreation space created can change depending on the park's age and its vegetation type. Therefore, the effects of the vegetation types present and urban park ages on soil properties and bacterial communities were tested in Yancheng, as it is a typical rapidly urbanizing city in China, and one of the most densely populated metropolises among the central cities of the Yangtze River Delta region. We found that the soil properties and bacterial community composition vary depending on vegetation type and park age. In addition, the pH value of soil planted with Cynodon dactylon is higher, and the available phosphorus concentrations in the old parks are at the highest levels, which are 1.20–2.66 times higher than in the middle-aged and young parks' soil. Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Acidobacteria_6, and Deltaproteobacteria are the predominant bacteria phyla in urban park soil. A higher level of bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) are found in Metasequoia glyptostroboides soil (5479, 69.7%) and middle-aged park soil (5670, 72.2%). Saprospirae, Chloracidobacteria, and Alphaproteobacteria are negatively correlated with pH to a significant extent. Additionally, pH, available potassium, and soil organic carbon were positively correlated with saccharase activity. Available phosphorus and nitrogen are related to soil community composition. These results indicate that both park age and vegetation type contribute to the differences in soil pH, available phosphorus, soil organic carbon, available potassium, available nitrogen, alkaline phosphatase, and soil bacterial composition within urban parks in Yancheng. Simple Summary: Interactions among soil organisms are crucial for food webs and ecological functions. However, the effects of millipedes, which play a key role as decomposers in the soil, on soil microarthropods remain unclear. This study demonstrates that millipede activity in the soil decreased the abundance and diversity of Collembola in the soil while increasing their abundance and diversity in the litter layer. Consequently, this led to an increase in the abundance and diversity of Acari in the soil. The dominant species of both Acari and Collembola were most notably affected by the experiment. Millipede activity significantly altered the community structure of Acari and Collembola and strengthened the correlation between these two groups. These findings enhance our understanding of the ecological role of millipedes. Ecosystem engineers influence the structure and function of soil food webs through non-trophic interactions. The activity of large soil animals, such as earthworms, has a significant impact on the soil microarthropod community. However, the influence of millipedes on soil microarthropod communities remains largely unknown. In this microcosm experiment, we examined the effects of adding, removing, and restricting millipede activity on Acari and Collembola communities in litter and soil by conducting two destructive sampling sessions on days 10 and 30, respectively. At the time of the first sampling event (10 d), Acari and Collembola abundance was shown to increase and the alpha diversity went higher in the treatments with millipedes. At the time of the second sampling event (30 d), millipedes significantly reduced the Collembola abundance and alpha diversity. The results were even more pronounced as the millipedes moved through the soil, which caused the collembolans to be more inclined to inhabit the litter, which in turn resulted in the increase in the abundance and diversity of Acari in the soil. The rapid growth of Collembola in the absence of millipedes significantly inhibited the abundance of Acari. The presence of millipedes altered the community structure of Acari and Collembola, leading to a stronger correlation between the two communities. Changes in these communities were driven by the dominant taxa of Acari and Collembola. These findings suggest that millipedes, as key ecosystem engineers, have varying impacts on different soil microarthropods. The deadwood contributes to an increase in soil heterogeneity due to the changing the microrelief (by the formation of windthrow-soil complexes), as well as changes in physical and chemical characteristics of decaying wood directly during xylolysis. We hypothesized that fallen logs as an element of microrelief influence the species composition and cover structure of vascular plants. We studied the influence of Picea abies (L.) Karst fallen logs of moderate and advanced decay stages on the horizontal distribution and heterogeneity of vascular plant cover in different microsite types (small boreal grass type, blueberry type, small boreal grass-blueberry type, herbs, and blueberry type) in old-growth middle taiga spruce forest in the Kivach State Nature Reserve (Republic of Karelia, Russia). The fallen deadwood acts as a factor of heterogeneity, causing reversible changes in the homogeneity of the original plant cover. The decaying logs influence the horizontal distribution of small herbs by changing the occurrence and density of shoots of Oxalis acetosella L., Maianthemum bifolium (L.) F.W. Schmidt, Vaccinium myrtillus L., and Vaccinium vitis-idaea L., as well as the occurrence of Luzula pilosa (L.) Willd. and Calamagrostis arundinacea (L.) Roth. Its impact on the heterogeneity parameters can be traced up to 20 cm from the log. The differences in vascular plant cover between fallen logs and the surrounding forest floor depend on the soil conditions of the microsite. The heterogeneity of conditions created by the logs smoothed out with increasing decay class, resulting in decreasing differences in the heterogeneity parameters of vascular plant cover between deadwood and forest floor. The changes in the homogeneity of the initial vascular plant cover by deadwood and the gradual smoothing of heterogeneity between the logs and the forest floor in rich and poor conditions have different, mainly opposite, trends. The coordination between leaf and root traits is conducive to an integrated understanding of whole-plant ecological strategies and reveals how community composition and diversity contribute to defining the functions and services of ecosystems. However, there is limited understanding regarding the impact of species richness and trait categories on the coordination between leaf and root traits. Based on a 9-year common garden experiment, we investigated the leaf and fine root traits of 56 plots (25.8 m × 25.8 m) encompassing various trait categories (trait categories were defined according to the root depth, leaf habit, and mycorrhizal type) and different levels of species richness (1, 2, 4, 8) in the context of a forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning experiment conducted in subtropical China (BEF-China). We found the following: (1) Our findings indicate that there was generally a significant difference in leaf traits, occasionally in absorptive root traits, and no difference in transport root traits between different trait categories. (2) Conversely, species richness significantly influenced all transport root traits except root nitrogen and most leaf and absorptive root traits. (3) The results demonstrated that trait categories played a crucial role in the coordination between leaf and fine root traits. Additionally, the coordination between leaf and fine root traits increased with higher species richness, particularly in deep-rooted, evergreen, and ectomycorrhizal fungi species. Furthermore, the coordination between leaf and fine root traits was significantly lower in monocultures compared to four- and eight-species mixtures. These results suggest that a significant mixture effect exists in the coordination between leaf and fine root traits due to the comprehensive and divergent capture of above- and belowground resources and reduced intraspecific competition. Therefore, compared to monocultures, mixed-species stands can enhance the coordination of leaf and fine root traits, and it is advisable to establish forests with mixtures of more than four species, dominated by deep-rooted, evergreen, and ectomycorrhizal fungi species, to maintain ecosystem stability and functional integrity. We assessed the impacts of three approaches to thinning from below with varying spatial patterns on several stand and individual tree variables for interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco), interior spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss × Picea engelmannii Engelm.), and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. Ex Loud. var. latifolia Englem.) in central British Columbia, Canada. The three thinning treatments were two experimental "clumped" treatments (3 m Clumped and 5 m Clumped) and the Standard (more uniform spacing) thinning treatment that was employed operationally at that time. We used long-term data from 24 plots measured five times over 21 years. Thinning increased stand basal area increment, with the plots that received the 5 m Clumped treatment having significantly higher periodic annual relative basal area increment than the unthinned Control plots. The responses for the two clumped treatments were not any lower than the Standard. The 3 m Clumped treatment was best if one is concerned about fast recovery of the growing space; however, the 5 m Clumped spacing treatment may be preferable if higher individual tree vigour is needed for resistance and resilience to fire, insects, and disease. Green manure (GM)–rice–rice rotation is an important management practice for improving soil fertility and rice productivity. The microbiological mechanisms for the increase in grain yield in GM–rice–rice rotation remain unclear. The responses of soil biodiversity, bacterial and fungal communities, and their interactions in the GM–rice–rice rotation were investigated based on two long-term field experiments in Gaoqiao (GQ) and Nanxian (NX) in Hunan Province, south China. Results showed that rice yields were raised by 11.79% and 15.03% under GM in GQ and NX, respectively. GM promoted Shannon diversity and Pielou's evenness and changed the community structures of bacteria and fungi. The co-occurrence network analysis found that the percentages of negative edges were higher in GM (40.79% and 44.32% in GQ and NX, respectively) than those in the corresponding winter fallow (34.86% and 29.13% in GQ and NX, respectively) in the combined bacterial–fungal networks, suggesting more stable microbial community under GM. Moreover, GM had higher percentages of bacterial–fungal and fungal–fungal edges than winter fallow, indicating that GM increased the interaction between bacteria and fungi and fungi play more essential roles in affecting soil processes under GM. The keystone taxa in GM were positively linked with C metabolism-related enzymes and soil multifunctionality, and were important in improving soil fertility and rice productivity. We concluded that the fungal community was more sensitive to GM application than the bacterial community and that keystone taxa had important influences on soil properties and rice productivity in the GM–double-rice cropping system, which can effectively support the sustainable development of the paddy field ecosystem in southern China. Crop plant height is a critical parameter for assessing crop physiological properties, such as above-ground biomass and grain yield and crop health. Current dominant plant height estimation methods are based on digital surface model (DSM) and vegetation indexes (VIs). However, DSM-based methods usually estimate plant height by growth stages, which would result in some discontinuity between growth stages due to different fitting curves. Additionally, there has been limited research on the application of VI-based plant height estimation for multiple crop species. Thus, this study investigated the validity and challenges associated with these methods for estimating canopy heights of multi-variety rice throughout the entire growing season. A total of 474 rice varieties were cultivated in a single season, and RGB images including red, green, and blue bands, DSMs, multispectral images including near infrared and red edge bands, and manually measured plant heights were collected in 2022. DSMs and 26 commonly used VIs were employed to estimate rice canopy heights during the growing season. The plant height estimation using DSMs was performed using different quantiles (50th, 75th, and 95th), while two-stage linear regression (TLR) models based on each VI were developed. The DSM-based method at the 95th quantile showed high accuracy, with an R2 value of 0.94 and an RMSE value of 0.06 m. However, the plant height estimation at the early growth stage showed lower effectiveness, with an R2 < 0. For the VIs, height estimation with MTCI yielded the best results, with an R2 of 0.704. The first stage of the TLR model (maximum R2 = 0.664) was significantly better than the second stage (maximum R2 = 0.133), which indicated that the VIs were more suitable for estimating canopy height at the early growth stage. By grouping the 474 varieties into 15 clusters, the R2 values of the VI-based TLR models exhibited inconsistencies across clusters (maximum R2 = 0.984; minimum R2 = 0.042), which meant that the VIs were suitable for estimating canopy height in the cultivation of similar or specific rice varieties. However, the DSM-based method showed little difference in performance among the varieties, which meant that the DSM-based method was suitable for multi-variety rice breeding. But for specific clusters, the VI-based methods were better than the DSM-based methods for plant height estimation. In conclusion, the DSM-based method at the 95th quantile was suitable for plant height estimation in the multi-variety rice breeding process, and we recommend using DSMs for plant height estimation after 26 DAT. Furthermore, the MTCI-based TLR model was suitable for plant height estimation in monoculture planting or as a correction for DSM-based plant height estimation in the pre-growth period of rice. The rapid and accurate estimation of aboveground forest phytomass remains a challenging research task. In general, methods for estimating phytomass fall mainly into the category of field measurements performed by ground-based methods, but approaches based on remote sensing and ecological modelling have been increasingly applied. The aim is to develop the scientific and methodological framework for the remote sensing estimation of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of forest stands, using the combination of surveys and machine learning models to determine phytomass of forest stands and calculate the carbon balance. Even-aged stands of different tree species growing in the forest steppe zone of the East European Plain were chosen as test objects. We have applied the modernized methodological approaches to compare and integrate forest and tree stand characteristics obtained by ground-based and UAV-based comprehensive surveys; additionally, we developed computer vision models and methods for determining the same characteristics by remote sensing methods. The key advantage of the proposed methodology for remote monitoring and carbon balance control over existing analogues is the minimization of the amount of groundwork and, consequently, the reduction inlabor costs without loss of information quality. Reliable data on phytomass volumes will allow for operational control of the forest carbon storage, which is essential for decision-making processes. This is important for the environmental monitoring of forests and green spaces of various economic categories. The proposed methodology is necessary for the monitoring and control of ecological–climatic and anthropogenic–technogenic transformations in various landscapes. This study examines the impact of silvicultural and land-use management practices on carbon sequestration in peri-urban forest ecosystems, with a particular focus on human-induced carbon dynamics. The study area's complex profile spans from a compact native forest to varying degrees of fragmentation. This included areas undergoing secondary succession forest without silvicultural interventions (No-SI) alongside sites subjected to high-intensity (High-SI) and low-intensity silvicultural interventions (Low-SI). The research assessed carbon stocks and sequestration in different carbon pools (living biomass, dead organic matter and soil) using field data, allometric equations and laboratory analysis. Findings reveal a significant correlation between the intensity of anthropogenic interventions and variations in carbon stocks. The CASMOFOR model facilitated the reconstruction of carbon stock and carbon-stock change dynamics over four decades (1980–2022), showing disparities in carbon storage capabilities linked to the structural characteristics of the sites. The Low-SI site had the highest carbon stock in all carbon pools (378 tonnes C ha−1), which is more than double compared to High-SI (161 tonnes C ha−1) or No-SI sites (134 tonnes C ha−1). However, the secondary succession forest (No-SI) demonstrated the highest annual carbon stock change (4.4 tonnes C ha−1 year−1), two times higher than the Low-SI mature stand (2.2 tonnes C ha−1 year−1), emphasising the resilience of forest ecosystems to recover and sustain carbon sequestration capacities after harvesting if forest land use remains unchanged. The study underscores the significant importance of anthropogenic interventions on carbon dynamics, especially for living tree biomass, which has consequences in enhancing carbon sequestration and contributing to emission reduction targets. The investigation into trade-offs among plant functional traits sheds light on how plants strategically balance growth and survival when facing environmental stress. This study sought to evaluate whether trade-offs observed at both community and individual species levels could indicate adaptive fitness across an intensity of flooding intensity. The study was conducted at 25 sampling sites spanning approximately 600 km along the riparian zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. The findings revealed that, along the flooding gradient, the overall riparian community did not exhibit significant trade-offs between leaf and root traits. Examining three broadly distributed dominant species (Cynodon dactylon, Xanthium strumarium, and Abutilon theophrasti), perennial plants showed pronounced trade-offs under low flooding intensity, while annuals exhibited trade-offs under moderate and low flooding intensity. The trade-offs were evident in traits related to nitrogen-carbon resources, such as specific leaf area, root tissue density, and photosynthetic rate. However, under strong flooding intensity, the relationship between leaf and root traits of the species studied was decoupled. Furthermore, the study identified a significant correlation between soil nitrogen and the trade-off traits under moderate and low flooding intensity. Integrating results from the CSR (Competitors, Stress-tolerators, Ruderals) strategy model, species niche breath analysis, and nitrogen-regulated trade-off, the study revealed that, in the face of high flooding intensity, perennial species (C. dactylon) adopts an S-strategy, demonstrating tolerance through a conservative resource allocation that decouples leaf-root coordination. Annual species (X. strumarium and A. theophrasti), on the other hand, exhibit niche specialization along the flooding gradient, employing distinct strategies (R- and C-strategy). As flooding stress diminishes and soil nitrogen level decreases, plant strategies tend to shift towards an R-strategy with a competition for reduced N resources. In conclusion, the study highlighted the pivotal roles of soil nitrogen and flooding intensity acting as the dual determinants of species growth and tolerance. These dynamics of growth-tolerance balance were evident in the diverse trade-offs between leaf and root traits of individual plant species with different life histories, underscoring the array of adaptive strategies employed by riparian plants across the flooding intensity gradient.
