This study presents the performance assessment of a novel hybrid pixel detector. The electron counting application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), named KITE, was optimized for 4D STEM applications and bump-bonded to a silicon sensor that is suitable for electron energies in the range 30-200 keV. The KITE ASIC was developed for high frame rates, currently up to 120 kfps, and high count rates, owing to fast signal shaping times and instant retrigger technology, which allows operation in a unique non-paralyzable counting mode. Investigated quantities include the spectral response, the identification of optimal threshold energies, an estimation of the threshold trimming accuracy, the analysis of the single-event multiplicity distributions, the count rate capabilities, and imaging performance metrics MTF and DQE. To highlight the capabilities of the detector, the best value of 10% of linearity loss was achieved at 84 Mcts/s/pix, the best value of count rate "cutoff" at nearly 150 Mcts/s/pix, and DQE (0) between 0.75 and 0.82 up to the electron energy of 160 keV. It is well known that during prolonged, high-intensity physical training, athletes experience a state of immunosuppression and that balanced nutrition can help maintain immunity. This review summarizes the effects (amplified by virus infection) of high-intensity, long-term exercise on immunity, critically presenting key micronutrients and supplementation strategies that can influence athletes' performance and their immune system. The main conclusion is that micronutrient supplementation with diet could help to protect the immune system from the stress effects induced by intense physical activities. Leishmaniosis by Leishmania infantum is a zoonotic vector-borne disease transmitted to humans and dogs by the bite of female sand-flies. The domestic dog is the main reservoir and infected dogs may show or not clinical symptoms. The prevalence of infection in dogs varies according to the population studied, the geographic area, and the diagnostics employed. This study aims to estimate the global prevalence, subgrouping per continent, country, diagnostic test and selected risk factors. Cross-sectional studies (n=150; from 1990 to 2020) estimating the prevalence of the infection by Leishmania infantum were extracted from four electronic databases. The pooled global prevalence obtained by random-effects meta-analysis was 15.2 % (95 %CI 13.6-16.9), mostly in rural (19.5 %) and owned dogs (16.5 %). Prevalence varied if the diagnosis was made by western blot (WB, 32.9 %), cellular immunity tests (27.5 %), ELISA (17 %), PCR (16.9 %), IFAT (15.9 %), rapid tests and direct agglutination test (DAT, 11.5 %), cytology/immunohistochemistry (13.1 %), culture (8.6 %). A small studies bias (P<0.005) in the overall prevalence meta-analysis, due to the impact of small-size studies on the overall results was found. Moreover, a continent-related bias was found regarding rapid test, DAT (P=0.021), and WB (P<0.001), as these assays are mainly used in South American studies. A study period bias (P=0.033) and a publication year bias (P=0.002) were detected for PCR, as the test was not employed before the year 2000. Using heterodyne transient grating spectroscopy, we observe a significant enhancement of exciton diffusion in a monolayer WSe 2 stacked on graphene. The diffusion dynamics can be optically tuned within a few picoseconds by altering the photoexcited carrier density in graphene. The effective diffusion constant in initial picoseconds in the WSe 2 /graphene heterostructure is (40.3 ± 4.5) cm 2 s -1 , representing a substantial improvement over (2.1 ± 0.8) cm 2 s -1 , typical for an isolated WSe 2 monolayer. This enhancement can be understood in terms of a transient screening of impurities, charge traps, and defect states in WSe 2 by photoexcited charge carriers in graphene. Furthermore, diffusion within WSe 2 is affected by interlayer interactions, such as charge transfer, varying with the incident excitation fluence. These findings underscore the dynamical nature of screening and diffusion processes in heterostructures of 2D semiconductors and graphene and provide insights for future applications of these systems in ultrafast optoelectronic devices.

The tuneability of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of degenerately doped metal oxide (MOX) nanocrystals (NCs) over a wide range of the infrared (IR) region by controlling NC size and doping content offers a unique opportunity to develop a future generation of optoelectronic and photonic devices like IR photodetectors and sensors. The central aim of this review article is to highlight the distinctive and remarkable plasmonic properties of degenerately or heavily doped MOX nanocrystals by reviewing the comprehensive literature reported so far. In particular, the literature of each MOX NC, i.e. ZnO, CdO, In 2 O 3 , and WO 3 doped with different dopants, is discussed separately. In addition to discussion of the most commonly used colloidal synthesis approaches, the ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers in NCs and the extraction of LSPR-assisted hot-carriers are also discussed in detail. Binocular stereo vision relies on imaging disparity between two hemispherical retinas, which is essential to acquire image information in three dimensional environment. Therefore, retinomorphic electronics with structural and functional similarities to biological eyes are always highly desired to develop stereo vision perception system. In this work, a hemispherical optoelectronic memristor array based on Ag-TiO 2 nanoclusters/sodium alginate film is developed to realize binocular stereo vision. All-optical modulation induced by plasmonic thermal effect and optical excitation in Ag-TiO 2 nanoclusters is exploited to realize in-pixel image sensing and storage. Wide field of view (FOV) and spatial angle detection are experimentally demonstrated owing to the device arrangement and incident-angle-dependent characteristics in hemispherical geometry. Furthermore, depth perception and motion detection based on binocular disparity have been realized by constructing two retinomorphic memristive arrays. The results demonstrated in this work provide a promising strategy to develop all-optically controlled memristor and promote the future development of binocular vision system with in-sensor architecture., (© 2024 The Author(s). Hydrophobic non-ionic (type V) deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as a new class of sustainable materials that have shown unique properties in several applications. In this study, type V DESs thymol : camphor, menthol : thymol and eutectic mixtures (EMs) based on menthol : carboxylic acids with variable chain length, are experimentally investigated using xenon NMR spectroscopy, with the aim to clarify the peculiar nanostructure of these materials. The results, obtained from the analysis of the 129 Xe chemical shifts and of the longitudinal relaxation times, reveal a correlation between the deviation from ideality of the DESs and their structure free volume. Furthermore, the effect of varying the composition of DESs and EMs on the liquid structure is also studied.

The study aims at assessing the potential of graphene-based adsorbents to reduce environmental impacts of Iodinated Contrast Media Agents (ICMs). We analyze an extensive collection of ICMs. A modeling approach resting on molecular docking and Density Functional Theory simulations is employed to examine the adsorption process at the molecular level. The study also relies on a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) modeling framework to correlate molecular properties with the adsorption energy (E ad ) of ICMs, thus enabling identification of the key mechanisms underpinning adsorption and of the key factors contributing to it. A collection of distinct QSAR-based models is developed upon relying on Multiple Linear Regression and a standard genetic algorithm method. Having at our disposal multiple models enables us to take into account the uncertainty associated with model formulation. Maximum Likelihood and formal model identification/discrimination criteria (such as Bayesian and/or information theoretic criteria) are then employed to complement the traditional QSAR modeling phase. This has the advantage of (a) providing a rigorous ranking of the alternative models included in the selected set and (b) quantifying the relative degree of likelihood of each of these models through a weight or posterior probability. The resulting workflow of analysis enables one to seamlessly embed DFT and QSAR studies within a theoretical framework of analysis that explicitly takes into account model and parameter uncertainty. Our results suggest that graphene-based surfaces constitute a promising adsorbent for ICMs removal, π-π stacking being the primary mechanism behind ICM adsorption. Furthermore, our findings offer valuable insights into the potential of graphene-based adsorbent materials for effectively removing ICMs from water systems. Obesity/overweight and its complications are a growing problem in many countries. Italian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery for Obesity (Società Italiana di Chirurgia dell'Obesità e delle Malattie Metaboliche-SICOB) decided to develop the first Italian guidelines for the endoscopic bariatric treatment of obesity. The creation of SICOB Guidelines is based on an extended work made by a panel of 44 members and a coordinator. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) methodology has been used to decide the aims, reference population, and target health professionals. Clinical questions have been created using the PICO (patient, intervention, comparison, outcome) conceptual framework. We will perform systematic reviews, formal meta-analyses, and network meta-analyses for each PICO and critical outcomes aimed at assessing and rating the efficacy and safety of endoscopic bariatric procedures in comparison with either no interventions, lifestyle interventions, or approved anti-obesity treatments in trials with a follow-up of at least 52 weeks. For PICO on temporary endoscopic bariatric treatments, we will also consider RCT with a minimum duration of 6 months. The panel proposed 8 questions, organized into four domains: A. Indication for endoscopic bariatric surgery; B. Revisional surgery; C. Temporary gastric and duodenal-jejunal procedures; D. Endoscopic diagnosis/treatment of bariatric and metabolic surgery complications. These guidelines will apply to patients aged ≥ 14 years) with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg/m 2 and requiring endoscopic bariatric surgery or endoscopic diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. Hyperthermia is considered a promising strategy to boost the curative outcome of traditional chemotherapeutic treatments. However, this thermally mediated drug delivery is still affected by important limitations. First, the poor accumulation of the conventional anticancer formulations in the target site limits the bioavailability of the active ingredient and induces off-site effects. In addition, some tumoral scenarios, such as ovarian carcinoma, are characterized by cell thermotolerance, which induces tumoral cells to activate self-protecting mechanisms against high temperatures. To overcome these constraints, we developed thermoresponsive nanoparticles (NPs) with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) to intracellularly deliver a therapeutic payload and release it on demand through hyperthermia stimulation. These NPs were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization and combine polyzwitterionic stabilizing segments and an oligoester-based biodegradable core. By leveraging the pseudo-living nature of RAFT polymerization, important physicochemical properties of the NPs were controlled and optimized, including their cloud point ( T cp ) and size. We have tuned the T cp of NPs to match the therapeutic needs of hyperthermia treatments at 43 °C and tested the nanocarriers in the controlled delivery of paclitaxel, a common anticancer drug. The NPs released almost entirely the encapsulated drug only following 1 h incubation at 43 °C, whereas they retained more than 95% of the payload in the physiological environment (37 °C), thus demonstrating their efficacy as on-demand drug delivery systems. The administration of drug-loaded NPs to ovarian cancer cells led to therapeutic effects outperforming the conventional administration of non-encapsulated paclitaxel, which highlights the potential of the zwitterionic UCST-type NPs as an innovative hyperthermia-responsive drug delivery system.

Introduction: Dysphagia is a condition characterized by swallowing difficulties that affects an estimated 8% of the population. Management of dysphagia often requires the use of specially formulated food products that are easier to swallow, while still meeting the nutritional needs of the patient. Despite the growing market for dysphagia-oriented products, there is a compelling need for comprehensive evaluations of their nutritional quality to ensure that they adequately support the health and well-being of this vulnerable population. The aims of this study were: (i) to investigate the nutritional composition of different dysphagia products currently sold in Italy, from several leading healthcare companies, by collecting the nutritional information on their packaging; (ii) to compare their energy, nutrient and salt content per 100 g and serving., Methods: A total of 70 items, available in the Italian online market were included in the analysis., Results: The data showed a wide difference among the six categories of dysphagia-oriented products. Salt content was found to be very high, with medium (>0.3 g/100 g but <1 g/100 g) and high (≥1 g/100 g) content found in 17 and 51% of products, respectively. Overall, the results show high variability in nutritional composition among dysphagia-oriented products currently on the market., Discussion: The high presence of salt in more than half of the products raises a critical issue, as it is not in accordance with WHO guidelines and especially with the clinical situation of the dysphagia patient. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are quantum confined systems with interesting optoelectronic properties, governed by Coulomb interactions in the monolayer (1L) limit, where strongly bound excitons provide a sensitive probe for many-body interactions. Here, we use two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) to investigate many-body interactions and their dynamics in 1L-WS 2 at room temperature and with sub-10 fs time resolution. Our data reveal coherent interactions between the strongly detuned A and B exciton states in 1L-WS 2 . Pronounced ultrafast oscillations of the transient optical response of the B exciton are the signature of a coherent 50 meV coupling and coherent population oscillations between the two exciton states. Supported by microscopic semiconductor Bloch equation simulations, these coherent dynamics are rationalized in terms of Dexter-like interactions. Our work sheds light on the role of coherent exciton couplings and many-body interactions in the ultrafast temporal evolution of spin and valley states in TMDs.

To improve soccer performance, coaches should be able to replicate the match's physical efforts during the training sessions. For this goal, small-sided games (SSGs) are widely used. The main purpose of the current study was to develop similarity and overload scores to quantify the degree of similarity and the extent to which the SSG was able to replicate match intensity. GPSs were employed to collect external load and were grouped in three vectors (kinematic, metabolic, and mechanical). Euclidean distance was used to calculate the distance between training and match vectors, which was subsequently converted into a similarity score. The average of the pairwise difference between vectors was used to develop the overload scores. Three similarity (Sim kin , Sim met , Sim mec ) and three overload scores (OVER kin , OVER met , OVER mec ) were defined for kinematic, metabolic, and mechanical vectors. Sim met and OVER met were excluded from further analysis, showing a very large correlation ( r > 0.7, p < 0.01) with Sim kin and OVER kin . The scores were subsequently analysed considering teams' level (First team vs. U19 team) and SSGs' characteristics in the various playing roles. The independent-sample t -test showed (p < 0.01) that the First team presented greater Sim kin ( d = 0.91), OVER kin ( d = 0.47), and OVER mec ( d = 0.35) scores. Moreover, a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) was employed to evaluate differences according to SSG characteristics. The results suggest that a specific SSG format could lead to different similarity and overload scores according to the playing position. Natural light harvesting is exceptionally efficient thanks to the local energy funnel created within light-harvesting complexes (LHCs). To understand the design principles underlying energy transport in LHCs, ultrafast spectroscopy is often complemented by mutational studies that introduce perturbations into the excitonic structure of the natural complexes. However, such studies may fall short of identifying all excitation energy transfer (EET) pathways and their changes upon mutation. Here, we show that a synergistic combination of first-principles calculations and ultrafast spectroscopy can give unprecedented insight into the EET pathways occurring within LHCs. We measured the transient absorption spectra of the minor CP29 complex of plants and of two mutants, systematically mapping the kinetic components seen in experiments to the simulated exciton dynamics. With our combined strategy, we show that EET in CP29 is surprisingly robust to the changes in the exciton states induced by mutations, explaining the versatility of plant LHCs.

Mobility edges (ME), separating Anderson-localized states from extended states, are known to arise in the single-particle energy spectrum of certain one-dimensional lattices with aperiodic order. Dephasing and decoherence effects are widely acknowledged to spoil Anderson localization and to enhance transport, suggesting that ME and localization are unlikely to be observable in the presence of dephasing. Here it is shown that, contrary to such a wisdom, ME can be created by pure dephasing effects in quasicrystals in which all states are delocalized under coherent dynamics. Since the lifetimes of localized states induced by dephasing effects can be extremely long, rather counterintuitively decoherence can enhance localization of excitation in the lattice. The results are illustrated by considering photonic quantum walks in synthetic mesh lattices.

Introduction. During 2020 and 2021, the circulation of influenza virus remained below expectations worldwide. In Argentina, in 2022, we observed an uninterrupted circulation of influenza all year round. Our objectives were to describe the circulation patterns and clinical characteristics of hospitalized children with influenza. Population and methods. Retrospective, analytical, observational study. All children with influenza virus admitted to a children's hospital during the 2019-2022 period were included. Results. A total of 138 patients were admitted over 4 years; in 2019, the rate of hospital discharges was 4.5/1000, compared to 15.1/1000 in 2022. No cases were recorded in 2020 and 2021. In 2019, most cases were observed in the winter; in 79%, the cause was acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI); influenza A was detected in 92%. In 2022, most cases occurred in the spring; 62% developed ALRTI; and influenza A was detected in 56%. Similar rates of vaccination and comorbidities were observed in both periods. Conclusions. In 2022, more hospitalizations due to influenza were recorded, which may have correlated with the use of more sensitive molecular diagnostic testing and a change in seasonality, with more cases observed in the spring. In 2019, influenza A predominated in lower respiratory tract infections, while in 2022, cases of influenza A and B were similar, with more extra-pulmonary forms., (Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría.)

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides able to form noncovalent water-soluble complexes useful in many different applications for the solubilization, delivery, and greater bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs. The complexation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with natural or synthetic cyclodextrins permits the solubilization of this poorly soluble anticancer drug. In this theoretical work, the complexes between β-CD and 5-FU are investigated using molecular mechanics (MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in water. The inclusion complexes are formed thanks to the favorable intermolecular interactions between β-CD and 5-FU. Both 1:1 and 1:2 β-CD/5-FU stoichiometries are investigated, providing insight into their interaction geometries and stability over time in water. In the 1:2 β-CD/5-FU complexes, the intermolecular interactions affect the drug's mobility, suggesting a two-step release mechanism: a fast release for the more exposed and hydrated drug molecule, with greater freedom of movement near the β-CD rims, and a slow one for the less-hydrated and well-encapsulated and confined drug. MD simulations study the intermolecular interactions between drugs and specific carriers at the atomistic level, suggesting a possible release mechanism and highlighting the role of the impact of the drug concentration on the kinetics process in water. A comparison with experimental data in the literature provides further insights.

The dynamic behavior of a physical system often originates from its spectral properties. In open systems, where the effective non-Hermitian description enables a wealth of spectral structures in the complex plane, the concomitant dynamics are significantly enriched, whereas the identification and comprehension of the underlying connections are challenging. Here we experimentally demonstrate the correspondence between the transient self-acceleration of local excitations and the non-Hermitian spectral topology using lossy photonic quantum walks. Focusing first on one-dimensional quantum walks, we show that the measured short-time acceleration of the wave function is proportional to the area enclosed by the eigenspectrum. We then reveal a similar correspondence in two-dimension quantum walks, where the self-acceleration is proportional to the volume enclosed by the eigenspectrum in the complex parameter space. In both dimensions, the transient self-acceleration crosses over to a long-time behavior dominated by a constant flow at the drift velocity. Our results unveil the universal correspondence between spectral topology and transient dynamics, and offer a sensitive probe for phenomena in non-Hermitian systems that originate from spectral geometry., (© 2024. The non-Hermitian skin effect describes the concentration of an extensive number of eigenstates near the boundaries of certain dissipative systems. This phenomenon has raised a huge interest in different areas of physics, including photonics, deeply expanding our understanding of non-Hermitian systems and opening up new avenues in both fundamental and applied aspects of topological phenomena. The skin effect has been associated to a nontrivial point-gap spectral topology and has been experimentally demonstrated in a variety of synthetic matter systems, including photonic lattices. In most of physical models exhibiting the non-Hermitian skin effect full or partial wave coherence is generally assumed. Here we push the concept of skin effect into the fully incoherent regime and show that rather generally (but not universally) the non-Hermitian skin effect persists under dephasing dynamics. The application of artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) methods is becoming increasingly popular in computational toxicology and drug design; it is considered as a promising solution for assessing the safety profile of compounds, particularly in lead optimization and ADMET studies, and to meet the principles of the 3Rs, which calls for the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal testing. In this context, we herein present the development of VenomPred 2.0 (http://www.mmvsl.it/wp/venompred2/), the new and improved version of our free of charge web tool for toxicological predictions, which now represents a powerful web-based platform for multifaceted and human-interpretable in silico toxicity profiling of chemicals. VenomPred 2.0 presents an extended set of toxicity endpoints (androgenicity, skin irritation, eye irritation, and acute oral toxicity, in addition to the already available carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, hepatotoxicity, and estrogenicity) that can be evaluated through an exhaustive consensus prediction strategy based on multiple ML models. Moreover, we also implemented a new utility based on the Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method that allows human interpretable toxicological profiling of small molecules, highlighting the features that strongly contribute to the toxicological predictions in order to derive structural toxicophores.

Background: The GCA is a well performing device in terms of efficacy despite complex anatomies (aortic rim <5 mm and ASD diameter >17 mm) with a good safety profile., Aims: To evaluate atrial septal defect (ASD) features impacting on right disc device thrombosis in patients who underwent Gore Cardioform ASD Occluder (GCA) implantation., Methods: A total of 44 consecutive patients undergoing percutaneous ASD with GCA device from January 2020 to September 2022 at our tertiary care Center were evaluated. The minimum follow-up was 6 months., Results: The patients were stratified in two groups according to a cut-off value of ASD diameter equal to 20 mm at sizing balloon, derived from ROC analysis (AUC = 0.894; p = 0.024). Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups in terms of age, sex, weight, height, and interatrial septum dimensions. Patients with ASD > 20 mm (n = 9) had a higher ASD/device dimension ratio, both at echocardiography (p = 0.009) and at sizing balloon (p = 0.001), longer fluoroscopic time (p = 0.022), and higher incidence of device thrombosis (0.006). Right disc thrombosis was observed in three patients of the ASD > 20 mm group, always in the inferior portion of the right disc. On univariate analysis, ASD diameter at sizing balloon (OR 1.360; p = 0.036) was the only positive predictor of device thrombosis., Conclusions: Right disc thrombosis of the GCA device may be under-recognized at follow-up, hence deserving clinical attention, especially in those patients with larger ASD diameters., (© 2024 The Authors. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) are minimally invasive procedures for treating aortic valves and diseases. Finite element simulations have proven to be valuable tools in predicting device-related complications. In the literature, the inclusion of aortic pre-stress has not been widely investigated. It plays a crucial role in determining the biomechanical response of the vessel and the device-tissue interaction. This study aims at demonstrating how and when to include the aortic pre-stress in patient-specific TAVI and TEVAR simulations. A percutaneous aortic valve and a stent-graft were implanted in aortic models reconstructed from patient-specific CT scans. Two scenarios for each patient were compared, i.e., including and neglecting the wall pre-stress. The neglection of pre-stress underestimates the contact pressure of 48% and 55%, the aorta stresses of 162% and 157%, the aorta strains of 77% and 21% for TAVI and TEVAR models, respectively. The stent stresses are higher than 48% with the pre-stressed aorta in TAVI simulations; while, similar results are obtained in TEVAR cases. The distance between the device and the aorta is similar with and without pre-stress. The inclusion of the aortic wall pre-stress has the capability to give a better representation of the biomechanical behavior of the arterial tissues and the implanted device. We combine site-directed mutagenesis with picosecond time-resolved fluorescence and femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopies to identify excitation energy transfer (EET) processes between chlorophylls (Chls) and xanthophylls (Xant) in the minor antenna complex CP29 assembled inside nanodiscs, which result in quenching. When compared to WT CP29, a longer lifetime was observed in the A 2 mutant, missing Chl a612, which closely interacts with Xant Lutein in site L1. Conversely, a shorter lifetime was obtained in the A 5 mutant, in which the interaction between Chl a603 and Chl a609 is strengthened, shifting absorption to lower energy and enhancing Chl-Xant EET. Global analysis of TA data indicated that EET from Chl a Q y to a Car dark state S* is active in both the A 2 and A 5 mutants and that their rate constants are modulated by mutations. Our study provides experimental evidence that multiple Chl-Xant interactions are involved in the quenching activity of CP29.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently experiencing a bloom driven by deep learning (DL) techniques, which rely on networks of connected simple computing units operating in parallel. The low communication bandwidth between memory and processing units in conventional von Neumann machines does not support the requirements of emerging applications that rely extensively on large sets of data. More recent computing paradigms, such as high parallelization and near-memory computing, help alleviate the data communication bottleneck to some extent, but paradigm- shifting concepts are required. Memristors, a novel beyond-complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, are a promising choice for memory devices due to their unique intrinsic device-level properties, enabling both storing and computing with a small, massively-parallel footprint at low power. Theoretically, this directly translates to a major boost in energy efficiency and computational throughput, but various practical challenges remain. In this work we review the latest efforts for achieving hardware-based memristive artificial neural networks (ANNs), describing with detail the working principia of each block and the different design alternatives with their own advantages and disadvantages, as well as the tools required for accurate estimation of performance metrics. The solvent-based sampling method for collecting gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and conducting compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) was deployed during a controlled field study. The solvent-based method used methanol as a sink to accumulate petroleum hydrocarbons during the sampling of soil air and effluent gas. For each gaseous sample collected, carbon isotope analysis (δ 13 C) was conducted for a selection of five VOCs (benzene, toluene, o-xylene, cyclopentane and octane) emitted by a synthetic hydrocarbon source emplaced in the subsurface. The δ 13 C values obtained for gaseous VOCs (collected from soil gas and effluent gas) were compared to measurements obtained for the same VOCs present in the source material (none aqueous phase liquid - NAPL) and dissolved in groundwater to evaluate the reliability of the solvent-based sampling method in providing accurate isotope measurements. Since the NAPL source was composed of only 12 VOCs, potential bias related to the analytical procedure (such as co-elution) were avoided, hence emphasizing on field-related bias. This field evaluation demonstrated the capacity of the solvent-based method to produce precise and accurate δ 13 C measurements. The isotopic discrepancies between the gaseous and the NAPL values were < 1 ‰ for 39 out of the 41 comparison points, thus deemed not statistically different based on a common isotopic uncertainty error of ±0.5 ‰. Moreover, the current field study is the first field study to report δ 13 C measurements for up to five gas-phase VOCs obtained from the same sample, which appears to be of interest for VOC fate or forensic studies. The possibility to use several VOC isotopic measurements enabled by the sampling method would contribute to strengthen the connection assessment between gaseous VOCs and the suspected emitting source. Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are promising components for various materials, given their controllable particle size and spherical shape. However, their origin from supramolecular aggregation has limited the applicability of LNPs as recoverable templates for immobilization of enzymes. In this study, we show that stabilized LNPs are highly promising for the immobilization of phospholipase D (PLD), the enzyme involved in the biocatalytic production of high-value polar head modified phospholipids of commercial interest, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine. Starting from hydroxymethylated lignin, LNPs were prepared and successively hydrothermally treated to obtain c-HLNPs with high resistance to organic solvents and a wide range of pH values, covering the conditions for enzymatic reactions and enzyme recovery. The immobilization of PLD on c-HLNPs (PLD-c-HLNPs) was achieved through direct adsorption. We then successfully exploited this new enzymatic preparation in the preparation of pure polar head modified phospholipids with high yields (60-90 %). Furthermore, the high stability of PLD-c-HLNPs allows recycling for a number of reactions with appreciable maintenance of its catalytic activity. Thus, PLD-c-HLNPs can be regarded as a new, chemically stable, recyclable and user-friendly biocatalyst, based on a biobased inexpensive scaffold, to be employed in sustainable chemical processes for synthesis of value-added phospholipids., (© 2023 The Authors. Purpose: Poor response to bariatric surgery, characterized by insufficient weight loss (IWL) or weight regain (WR), poses a significant challenge in obesity treatment. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of liraglutide in addressing this issue., Materials and Methods: A retrospective, multicenter cohort study investigated the impact of liraglutide 3 mg on weight loss in adults with suboptimal responses or weight regain after bariatric surgery (BS). Additionally, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted for a comprehensive evaluation., Results: A total of 119 patients (mean age 41.03 ± 11.2 years, 71.4% female) who experienced IWL or WR after BS received pharmacologic therapy with liraglutide 3 mg. Mean percent weight loss in the entire cohort was 5.6 ± 2.6% at 12 weeks and 9.3 ± 3.6% at 24 weeks with a significant reduction in waist circumference (p < 0.0001). No serious side effects were reported. A meta-analysis, utilizing the fixed effect model with the metafor package in R, included 6 and 5 papers for the change in body weight and BMI after liraglutide treatment, respectively. The analysis demonstrated a considerable reduction in body weight (7.9; CI - 10.4; - 5.4, p < 0.0001) and BMI (3.09; CI 3.89; - 2.28, p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: Liraglutide 3 mg emerges as a viable option for significant weight loss in patients experiencing IWL or WR after BS. Marine life is populated by a huge diversity of organisms with an incredible range of colour. While structural colour mechanisms and functions are usually well studied in marine animal species, there is a huge knowledge gap regarding the marine macroalgae (red, green and brown seaweeds) that have structural coloration and the biological significance of this phenomenon in these photosynthetic organisms. Here we show that structural colour in the gametophyte life history phase of the red alga Chondrus crispus plays an important role as a photoprotective mechanism in synergy with the other pigments present. In particular, we have demonstrated that blue structural coloration attenuates the more energetic light while simultaneously favouring green and red light harvesting through the external antennae (phycobilisomes) which possess an intensity-dependent photoprotection mechanism. These insights into the relationship between structural colour and photosynthetic light management further our understanding of the mechanisms involved.

Structurally well-defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are nanostructures with unique optoelectronic properties. In the liquid phase, strong aggregation typically hampers the assessment of their intrinsic properties. Recently we reported a novel type of GNRs, decorated with aliphatic side chains, yielding dispersions consisting mostly of isolated GNRs. Here we employ two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to unravel the optical properties of isolated GNRs and disentangle the transitions underlying their broad and rather featureless absorption band. We observe that vibronic coupling, typically neglected in modeling, plays a dominant role in the optical properties of GNRs. Moreover, a strong environmental effect is revealed by a large inhomogeneous broadening of the electronic transitions. Finally, we also show that the photoexcited bright state decays, on the 150 fs time scale, to a dark state which is in thermal equilibrium with the bright state, that remains responsible for the emission on nanosecond time scales.

Implantable cell replacement therapies promise to completely restore the function of neural structures, possibly changing how we currently perceive the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. One of the major clinical hurdles for the routine implementation of stem cell therapies is poor cell retention and survival, demanding the need to better understand these mechanisms while providing precise and scalable approaches to monitor these cell-based therapies in both pre-clinical and clinical scenarios. This poses significant multidisciplinary challenges regarding planning, defining the methodology and requirements, prototyping and different stages of testing. Aiming toward an optogenetic neural stem cell implant controlled by a smart wireless electronic frontend, we show how an iterative development methodology coupled with a modular design philosophy can mitigate some of these challenges. In this study, we present a miniaturized, wireless-controlled, modular multisensor platform with fully interfaced electronics featuring three different modules: an impedance analyzer, a potentiostat and an optical stimulator. We show the application of the platform for electrical impedance spectroscopy-based cell monitoring, optical stimulation to induce dopamine release from optogenetically modified neurons and a potentiostat for cyclic voltammetry and amperometric detection of dopamine release. The multisensor platform is designed to be used as an opto-electric headstage for future in vivo animal experiments.

Tissue histopathology, based on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining of thin tissue slices, is the gold standard for the evaluation of the immune reaction to the implant of a biomaterial. It is based on lengthy and costly procedures that do not allow longitudinal studies. The use of non-linear excitation microscopy in vivo , largely label-free, has the potential to overcome these limitations. With this purpose, we develop and validate an implantable microstructured device for the non-linear excitation microscopy assessment of the immune reaction to an implanted biomaterial label-free. The microstructured device, shaped as a matrix of regular 3D lattices, is obtained by two-photon laser polymerization. It is subsequently implanted in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of embryonated chicken eggs for 7 days to act as an intrinsic 3D reference frame for cell counting and identification. The histological analysis based on H&E images of the tissue sections sampled around the implanted microstructures is compared to non-linear excitation and confocal images to build a cell atlas that correlates the histological observations to the label-free images. In this way, we can quantify the number of cells recruited in the tissue reconstituted in the microstructures and identify granulocytes on label-free images within and outside the microstructures. Collagen and microvessels are also identified by means of second-harmonic generation and autofluorescence imaging. The analysis indicates that the tissue reaction to implanted microstructures is like the one typical of CAM healing after injury, without a massive foreign body reaction. This opens the path to the use of similar microstructures coupled to a biomaterial, to image in vivo the regenerating interface between a tissue and a biomaterial with label-free non-linear excitation microscopy. Background and Aims: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of global public health, with some people suffering more adverse clinical outcomes than others. The aim of this study is to deepen our understanding of the specific impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) on the in-hospital mortality in octogenarian patients with COVID-19., Methods: This is a prospective observational cohort study, which involved 23 COVID-19 hospital units in the Campania Region, Italy. Exposure variables were collected during hospital admission and at discharge. Only patients aged ≥80 years were deemed eligible for the study., Results: 197 patients were included in the study (median age 83.0 [82.0-87.0] years; 51.5% men), with a median duration of hospitalization of 15.0 [8.0-25.0] days. From the multivariable Cox regression analysis, after the application of Šidák correction, only the respiratory rate (HR 1.09, 95% CI: 1.04 to 1.14; p < 0.001) and AKI development (HR: 3.40, 95% CI: 1.80 to 6.40; p < 0.001) were independently associated with the primary outcome. Moreover, the Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly different risk of in-hospital mortality between patients with and without AKI (log-rank: <0.0001)., Conclusions: In our investigation, we identified a significant association between AKI and mortality rates among octogenarian patients admitted for COVID-19. These findings raise notable concerns and emphasize the imperative for vigilant monitoring of this demographic cohort.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes in daily life for humanity and has had a profound impact on mental health. As widely acknowledged, the pandemic has led to notable increases in rates of anxiety, depression, distress, and other mental health-related issues, affecting both infected patients and non-infected individuals. COVID-19 patients and survivors face heightened risks for various neurological and psychiatric disorders and complications. Vulnerable populations, including those with pre-existing mental health conditions and individuals living in poverty or frailty, may encounter additional challenges. Tragically, suicide rates have also risen, particularly among young people, due to factors such as unemployment, financial crises, domestic violence, substance abuse, and social isolation. Efforts are underway to address these mental health issues, with healthcare professionals urged to regularly screen both COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 patients and survivors for psychological distress, ensuring rapid and appropriate interventions. Ongoing periodic follow-up and multidimensional, interdisciplinary approaches are essential for individuals experiencing long-term psychiatric sequelae. Preventive strategies must be developed to mitigate mental health problems during both the acute and recovery phases of COVID-19 infection. Vaccination efforts continue to prioritize vulnerable populations, including those with mental health conditions, to prevent future complications. Given the profound implications of mental health problems, including shorter life expectancy, diminished quality of life, heightened distress among caregivers, and substantial economic burden, it is imperative that political and health authorities prioritize the mental well-being of all individuals affected by COVID-19, including infected individuals, non-infected individuals, survivors, and caregivers., (© 2024. The possibility of using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as co-solvents for stabilizing and preserving the native structure of DNA provides an attractive opportunity in the field of DNA biotechnology. The rationale of this work is a systematic investigation of the effect of hydrated choline-based DES on the structural stability of a 30-base-pair double-stranded DNA model via a combination of spectroscopic experiments and MD simulations. UV absorption and CD experiments provide evidence of a significant contribution of DESs to the stabilization of the double-stranded canonical (B-form) DNA structure. Multi-wavelength synchrotron UV Resonance Raman (UVRR) measurements indicate that the hydration shell of adenine-thymine pairs is strongly perturbed in the presence of DESs and that the preferential interaction between H-bond sites of guanine residues and DESs is significantly involved in the stabilization of the dsDNA. Finally, MD calculations show that the minor groove of DNA is significantly selective for the choline part of the investigated DESs compared to the major groove.
