Search

Detection of scintillation light in noble liquid detectors is necessary for identifying neutrino interaction candidates from beam, astrophysical, or solar sources. Large monolithic detectors typically have highly efficient detectors, like photomultipliers, mounted outside their electric field. This option is not available for modular detectors that wish to maximize their active volume. The ArgonCube light readout system detectors (ArCLights) are large-area thin wavelength shifting (WLS) panels that can operate in highly proximate modular detectors and within the electric field. The WLS plastic forming the bulk structure of the ArCLight has Tetraphenyl Butadiene (TPB) and sheets of dichroic mirror layered across its surface. It is coupled to a set of six silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). This publication compares TPB coating techniques for large surface areas and describes quality control methods for large scale production.

An analog of the optical polarizer/analyzer for electrons, a spin filter based on freestanding ferromagnetic (FM) nanomembrane covering the entrance of the microchannel plate (MCP) was applied for efficient spin filtering and electron amplification in the 2D field of view. To study the spin dependent transmission, we constructed a spin-triode device (spintron), which consists of a compact proximity focused vacuum tube with the Na2KSb spin-polarized electron source, the FM-MCP and phosphor screen placed to run parallel to each other. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of FM nanomembranes consisting of a Co/Pt superlattice deposited on a freestanding 3 nm SiO2 layer with a total thickness of 10 nm. The FM-MCP has 10e6 channels with a single-channel Sherman function S=0.6 and a transmission of 1.5x10e-3 in the low electron energy range. The FM-MCP-based device provides a compact optical method for measuring the spin polarization of free electron beams in the imaging mode and is well suited for photoemission spectroscopy and microscopy methods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The task of this work was to design and later produce a low-power (single supply 5 - 30 V, dual supply +-2.5 V and +-15 V) rail-to-rail operational amplifier aRD820 with low voltage noise (<4 uV, p-p. 0.1 to 10 Hz), ultralow input bias current (< 15 pA), and low offset voltage (< 500 uV) characteristics. Similar characteristics are presented by Analog Devices chip AD820. Thus, the task of the design team was to adapt the prototype circuity of AD820 to our technological capabilities, modify the circuit, if necessary, to eliminate any deficiency of the prototype. The input stage module got source followers at the input of the operational amplifier. Second stage module was modified to be more symmetric. The output stage module obtained additional resistors and capacitors to achieve a frequency compensation. One FET transistor in the current reference module was substituted by other elements. Simplified electric schemes of these modules of AR820 and aRD820 are presented. The performance of modified electric schemes of modules was tested in Simulink software. Simulations of the full electric scheme for aRD820 were made and showed that it demonstrates similar characteristics as AD820 data tables. Later production of the aRD820 chip and measurements demonstrated that the planned characteristics of the operational amplifier were met.

The spherically bent crystal analyzer (SBCA) is a widely-adopted hard x-ray optic, renowned for its good energy resolution and large collection solid angle. It is frequently employed in synchrotron-based techniques like Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy, as well as in the rebirth of laboratory-based X-ray Absorption Fine Strucure (XAFS) and XES, and its predominant use has been in 'symmetric' operation on the Rowland circle. The recent study of Gironda et al. (J. Anal. At. Spectrom., 2024, 39, 1375) emphasizes the benefits of 'asymmetric' SBCA operation, demonstrating the use of multiple crystal reflections from a single SBCA to broaden its accessible energy range. Furthermore, Gironda et al. demonstrate that asymmetric operation frequently mitigates energy broadening intrinsic to Johann optics and propose that under a specific Rowland circle configuration, designated here the Johann Normal Alignment (JNA), such broadening is eradicated altogether. We report extensive ray tracing simulations to scrutinize the impact of asymmetric configurations on energy broadening and detector plane defocusing. We find that the performance of asymmetric SBCA operation generally exceeds its symmetric counterpart in energy resolution when no analyzer masking is used and, with strategic detector placement, the decrease in detection efficiency due to defocusing can be minimized. Spectroscopic imaging is adversely affected by the detector plane blurring, but rejection of scattering from special environment windows in x-ray Raman imaging is still feasible. These results help inform future, more common implementation of asymmetric reflections with SBCA.

The objective of this work is to showcase the ortho-positronium lifetime as a probe for soft-tissue characterization. We employed positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy to experimentally measure the three components of the positron annihilation lifetime para-positronium (p-Ps), positron, and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) for three types of porcine, non-fixated soft tissues ex vivo: adipose, hepatic, and muscle.Then, we benchmarked our measurements with X-ray phase-contrast imaging, which is the current state-of-the-art for soft-tissue analysis. We found that the o-Ps lifetime in adipose tissues (2.54+/-0.12) ns was approximately 20\% longer than in hepatic (2.04+/-0.09 ns) and muscle (2.03+/-0.12 ns) tissues .In addition, the separation between the measurements for adipose tissue and the other tissues was better from o-Ps lifetime measurement than from X-ray phase-contrast imaging. This experimental study proved that the o-Ps lifetime is a viable non-invasive probe for characterizing and classifying the different soft tissues. Specifically, o-Ps lifetime as a soft-tissue characterization probe had a strong sensitivity to the lipid content that can be potentially implemented in commercial positron emission tomography scanners that feature list-mode data acquisition.

Spaghetti-type calorimeters (SpaCal) are being considered as a potential solution for experiments at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), particularly for the LHCb ECAL Upgrade 2 project where the expected instantaneous intensity and radiation dose in the central area of the ECAL significantly exceed the limits tolerable by the current Shashlik-type modules. SpaCal modules consist of an absorber block containing a matrix of holes filled with scintillating fibres, offering flexible granularity. However, the total number of scintillating fibres exceeds the available photocathode surface area, necessitating the use of a light guide to efficiently collect and register the light from the scintillating fibres to a single photomultiplier. This introduces non-uniformity in the light collection, which adversely impacts energy resolution. In this study, we explored various geometries of light guides with the optical ray-tracing simulations in order to collect scintillating light from a $30\times 30$~mm$^2$ surface to the photocathode of photomultipliers with the following entrance window: $18\times 18$~mm$^2$ (e.g. R7600), $9\times 9$~mm$^2$ (multi-anode version, e.g. R7600-M4), and round photocathode $\oslash 8$~mm (e.g. R9880). The light collection non-uniformity impact on the energy resolution is estimated.

Reliable, real-time state estimation in nuclear reactors is of critical importance for monitoring, control and safety. It further empowers the development of digital twins that are sufficiently accurate for real-world deployment. As nuclear engineering systems are typically characterised by extreme environments, their in-core sensing is a challenging task, even more so in Generation-IV reactor concepts, which feature molten salt or liquid metals as thermal carriers. The emergence of data-driven methods allows for new techniques for accurate and robust estimation of the full state space vector characterising the reactor (mainly composed by neutron fluxes and the thermal-hydraulics fields). These techniques can combine different sources of information, including computational proxy models and local noisy measurements on the system, in order to robustly estimate the state. This work leverages the Shallow Recurrent Decoder (SHRED) architecture to estimate the entire state vector of a reactor from three, out-of-core time-series neutron flux measurements alone. Specifically, the Molten Salt Fast Reactor, in the EVOL geometry (Evaluation and Viability of Liquid Fuel Fast Reactor System project), is demonstrated as a test case, with neutron flux measurements alone allowing for reconstruction of the 20 coupled field variables of the dynamics. This approach can further quantify the uncertainty associated with the state estimation due to its considerably low training cost on compressed data. The accurate reconstruction of every characteristic field in real-time makes this approach suitable for monitoring and control purposes in the framework of a reactor digital twin.

We develop a new algorithm to estimate the temperature of a nonneutral plasma in a Penning-Malmberg trap. The algorithm analyzes data obtained by slowly lowering a voltage that confines one end of the plasma and collecting escaping charges, and is a maximum likelihood estimator based on a physically-motivated model of the escape protocol presented in Beck [1990]. Significantly, our algorithm may be used on single-count data, allowing for improved fits with low numbers of escaping electrons. This is important for low-temperature plasmas such as those used in antihydrogen trapping. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation of our algorithm, and assess its robustness to intrinsic shot noise and external noise. Approximately 100 particle counts are needed for an accuracy of +/-10% -- this provides a lower bound for measurable plasma temperatures of approximately 3 K for plasmas of length 1 cm., Comment: 22 pages total (16 main text, 6 appendices), 6 figures

In this paper, a definition of the gain and added noise of impedance matching networks for scanning microwave microscopy is given. This definition can be used to compare different impedance matching techniques independently of the instrument used to measure the S-parameter. As a demonstration, impedance matching devices consisting of a Beatty line, a tuner, and interferometric setups with and without amplifiers have been investigated. Emittance measurements using synchrotron radiation are usually performed using x-rays to avoid diffraction limits. Interferometric techniques using visible light are also used to measure either the horizontal or the vertical beam projection. Several measurements rotating the interferometry axis are needed to obtain a full beam reconstruction. In this report we present a new interferometric multi-aperture masking technique and data analysis, inspired by astronomical methods, that are able to provide a full 2-D transverse beam reconstruction in a single acquisition. The charged particles are tracked in the high energy physics detectors to provide the information of their properties. One of the tracking detector is straw tube detector that has been used by many experiments. The aim of this paper is to study the different properties of particles using different gas composition. The gas mixture that shows maximum transition radiation among xenon gas mixtures was found to be $XeHeCH_{4}$ :: 30:55:15. The gas mixture that has shown maximum primary ionization has been $XeCO_{2}O_{2}$ :: 70:27:3. The LHC Run 5 and 6 data taking phases will bring unprecedented luminosity in high-energy proton-proton and in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Collaboration proposes a next-generation experiment, ALICE 3, specifically designed to operate with the future LHC. ALICE 3 will feature a large pixel-based tracking system covering eight units of pseudorapidity, complemented by advanced particle identification systems. These include silicon time-of-flight layers, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, a muon identification system, and an electromagnetic calorimeter. By placing the vertex detector on a retractable plate inside the beam pipe, a track pointing resolution better than 10 microns can be achieved for the transverse momentum range $p_T$>200 MeV/c. ALICE 3 will be capable of innovative measurements of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and explore new frontiers in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The detailed study of thermal and dynamical properties of QGP will be made possible by measuring low-$p_T$ heavy-flavour production, including beauty hadrons, multi-charm baryons, and charm-charm correlations. Precise multi-differential measurements of dielectron emission will allow for the exploration of chiral-symmetry restoration and the time-evolution of QGP temperature. In addition to QGP studies, ALICE 3 will make unique contributions to the physics of the hadronic phase, through femtoscopic studies of charm meson interaction potentials and searches for nuclei containing charm. After the discovery of a cross-luminescence (CL) in BaF2 in 1982, a large number of CL scintillators were investigated. However, no CL scintillator superior to BaF2 has been discovered, and the research of CL scintillators has subsided. Recent technological development in medical imaging and high-energy physics created a new demand for ultra-fast scintillators further supported by the development of UV-sensitive semiconductor photodetectors. As a consequence, renewed interest in CL scintillators appeared. To satisfy the requirements of fast timing applications high photo-detection efficiency, e. i. a good spectral match between the scintillator and photodetector must be achieved. Halide scintillators play a crucial role in the detection of ionizing radiation since the discovery of scintillation in NaI:Tl in 1948. The discovery of NaI:Tl motivated the research and development (R&D) of halide scintillators resulting in the development of CsI:Tl, CsI:Na, CaF$_2$:Eu, etc. Later, the R&D shifted toward oxide materials due to their high mechanical and chemical stability, good scintillation properties, and relative ease of bulk single crystal growth. However, the development in crystal growth technology allowed for the growth of high-quality single crystals of hygroscopic and mechanically fragile materials including SrI$_2$ and LaBr$_3$. Scintillators based on these materials exhibit excellent performance and push the limits of inorganic scintillators. These results motivated intense research of a large variety of halide-based scintillators. Moreover, materials based on lead halide perovskites found application in the fields of photovoltaics, solid-state lighting, and lasers. The first studies show also the significant potential of lead halide perovskites as ultrafast scintillators in the form of NCs. The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider is preparing for an upgrade after 2027-2028 to handle higher luminosity and increased background rates. A Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) has been identified as a potential candidate for a common front-end upgrade for subsystems requiring high-speed waveform digitization. The RFSoC's ADC and DAC channels were tested across various magnetic field strengths and a few different field orientations. Power consumption and boot memory functionality were also assessed. Results indicate stable operation with negligible performance degradation, suggesting the RFSoC's viability for high-speed digitization tasks in high magnetic field environments.

Many advances in astronomy and astrophysics originate from accurate images of the sky emission across multiple wavelengths. This often requires reconstructing spatially and spectrally correlated signals detected from multiple instruments. To facilitate the high-fidelity imaging of these signals, we introduce the universal Bayesian imaging kit (UBIK). Specifically, we present J-UBIK, a flexible and modular implementation leveraging the JAX-accelerated NIFTy.re software as its backend. J-UBIK streamlines the implementation of the key Bayesian inference components, providing for all the necessary steps of Bayesian imaging pipelines. First, it provides adaptable prior models for different sky realizations. Second, it includes likelihood models tailored to specific instruments. So far, the package includes three instruments: Chandra and eROSITA for X-ray observations, and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for the near- and mid-infrared. The aim is to expand this set in the future. Third, these models can be integrated with various inference and optimization schemes, such as maximum a posteriori estimation and variational inference. Explicit demos show how to integrate the individual modules into a full analysis pipeline. Overall, J-UBIK enables efficient generation of high-fidelity images via Bayesian pipelines that can be tailored to specific research objectives.

Microgravity mass gauging has gained increasing importance in recent years due to the acceleration in planning for long-term space missions as well as in-space refueling and transfer operations. It is of particular importance with cryogenic propellants where periodic tank venting maneuvers and leak detection place a special emphasis on accurate mass gauging. Several competing technologies have arisen, but capacitance mass gauging has several distinct advantages due to its low mass, non-intrusiveness, and whole volume interrogation technique. Capacitance based measurement has also seen recent success in measuring cryogenic liquid nitrogen and hydrogen volume fraction and flow rate, showing its compatibility with cryogenic propellants. However, the effects of gravity on fluid behavior make the calibration and testing of these sensors difficult on the ground. In this paper a prototype sensor is constructed that can emulate fluid positions in microgravity and earth gravity configurations. Experimental propellant fills and drains are conducted using a simulant fluid with similar electrical properties to cryogenic propellants. This expanded dataset is compared with previous simulation results and used to construct a machine learning model capable of calculating the fluid mass in tanks both with and without propellant management devices., Comment: 6 figures, 8 references

We present OpenDosimeter (https://opendosimeter.org/), an open hardware solution for real-time personal X-ray dose monitoring based on a scintillation counter. Using an X-ray sensor assembly (LYSO + SiPM) on a custom board powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico, OpenDosimeter provides real-time feedback (1 Hz), data logging (10 hours), and battery-powered operation. One of the core innovations is that we calibrate the device using $^{241}$Am found in ionization smoke detectors. Specifically, we use the $\gamma$-emissions to spectrally calibrate the dosimeter, then calculate the effective dose from X-ray exposure by compensating for the scintillator absorption efficiency and applying energy-to-dose coefficients derived from tabulated data in the ICRP 116 publication. We demonstrate that this transparent approach enables real-time dose rate readings with a linear response between 0.1-1000 $\mu$Sv/h at $\pm$25% accuracy, tested for energies up to 120 keV. The maximum dose rate readings are limited by pile-up effects when approaching count rate saturation ($\sim$77 kcps at $\sim$13 $\mu$s average pulse processing time). The total component cost for making an OpenDosimeter is <\$100, which, combined with its open design (both hardware and software), enables cost-effective local reproducibility on a global scale. This paper reports a Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) event camera that is 6x more sensitive at 14x lower illumination than existing commercial and prototype cameras. Event cameras output a sparse stream of brightness change events. Their high dynamic range (HDR), quick response, and high temporal resolution provide key advantages for scientific applications that involve low lighting conditions and sparse visual events. However, current DVS are hindered by low sensitivity, resulting from shot noise and pixel-to-pixel mismatch. Commercial DVS have a minimum brightness change threshold of >10%. Sensitive prototypes achieved as low as 1%, but required kilo-lux illumination. Our SciDVS prototype fabricated in a 180nm CMOS image sensor process achieves 1.7% sensitivity at chip illumination of 0.7 lx and 18 Hz bandwidth. Novel features of SciDVS are (1) an auto-centering in-pixel preamplifier providing intrascene HDR and increased sensitivity, (2) improved control of bandwidth to limit shot noise, and (3) optional pixel binning, allowing the user to trade spatial resolution for sensitivity., Comment: Presented at ESSERC 2024

We present a novel approach to cavity ring-down spectroscopy utilizing an optical frequency comb as the direct probe of the Fabry-Perot cavity, coupled with a time-resolved Fourier transform spectrometer for parallel retrieval of ring-down events. Our method achieves high spectral resolution over a broad range, enabling precision measurements of cavity losses and absorption lineshapes with enhanced sensitivity. A critical advancement involves a stabilization technique ensuring complete extinction of comb light without compromising cavity stabilization. We demonstrate the capabilities of our system through precision spectroscopy of carbon monoxide rovibrational transitions perturbed by argon.

We evaluate the impact of inference model on uncertainties when using continuous wave Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) measurements to infer temperature. Our approach leverages a probabilistic feedforward inference model designed to maximize the likelihood of observed ODMR spectra through automatic differentiation. This model effectively utilizes the temperature dependence of spin Hamiltonian parameters to infer temperature from spectral features in the ODMR data. We achieve prediction uncertainty of $\pm$ 1 K across a temperature range of 243 K to 323 K. To benchmark our probabilistic model, we compare it with a non-parametric peak-finding technique and data-driven methodologies such as Principal Component Regression (PCR) and a 1D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We find that when validated against out-of-sample dataset that encompasses the same temperature range as the training dataset, data driven methods can show uncertainties that are as much as 0.67 K lower without incorporating expert-level understanding of the spectroscopic-temperature relationship. However, our results show that the probabilistic model outperforms both PCR and CNN when tasked with extrapolating beyond the temperature range used in training set, indicating robustness and generalizability. In contrast, data-driven methods like PCR and CNN demonstrate up to ten times worse uncertainties when tasked with extrapolating outside their training data range., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

Fabrication of dielectrics at low temperature is required for temperature-sensitive detectors. For superconducting detectors, such as transition edge sensors and kinetic inductance detectors, AlMn is widely studied due to its variable superconducting transition temperature at different baking temperatures. Experimentally only the highest baking temperature determines AlMn transition temperature, so we need to control the wafer temperature during the whole process. In general, the highest process temperature happens during dielectric fabrication. Here, we present the cryogenic microwave performance of Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$, SiN$_{x}$ and $\alpha$-Si using ICPCVD at low temperature of 75 $^{\circ}$C. The dielectric constant, internal quality factor and TLS properties are studied using Al parallel plate resonators.

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a powerful analytical method for not only the chemical identification of solid, liquid, and gas species, but also the quantification of their concentration. However, the chemical quantification capability of FTIR is significantly hindered when the analyte is surrounded by a strong IR absorbing medium, such as liquid solutions. To overcome this limit, here we develop an IR fiber microprobe that can be inserted into liquid medium, and obtain full FTIR spectra at points of interest. To benchmark this endoscopic FTIR method, we insert the microprobe into bulk water covering a ZnSe substrate and measure the IR transmittance of water as a function of the probe-substrate distance. The obtained vibrational modes, overall transmittance vs z profiles, quantitative absorption coefficients, and micro z-section IR transmittance spectra are all consistent with the standard IR absorption properties of water. The results pave the way for endoscopic chemical profiling inside bulk liquid solutions, promising for applications in many biological, chemical, and electrochemical systems.

Homodyne Quadrature Interferometers (HoQIs) are compact, low noise and high dynamic range displacement sensors designed for use in gravitational wave observatories. Their lower noise compared to the displacement sensors used at present makes them valuable for improving the seismic isolation in current and future detectors. This paper outlines the progression of this sensor from initial production and benchtop tests to in-vacuum static performance and installation in a gravitational wave detector prototype facility. A detailed design description is outlined, including the full signal and optical chain required for implementation in detectors. The measured in-vacuum static performance indicates a noise floor of $3-4\times10^{-13}m/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ at 10Hz. Three HoQIs were installed on the beamsplitter suspension at the AEI 10m prototype. They measured motion of the intermediate mass across the entire bandwidth measured and showed minimal non-linearities and a good robustness to motion in unmeasured degrees of freedom, both important for practical use in dynamic systems such as seismic isolation.

The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique is routinely used to stabilize the frequency of a laser to a reference cavity. The electronic sideband (ESB) locking scheme, a PDH variant, helps bridge the frequency difference between the quantized frequencies enforced by the cavity and the laser frequency of interest. Here we use quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), a technique used in digital signal communication, to engineer the high-quality phase-modulated radio-frequency (rf) signal required for ESB locking scheme. We develop a theoretical framework to analyze the effects of in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) impairments on the ESB error signal for ultra-narrow linewidth lasers. We design and implement two baseband-sampling software-defined radio variants for implementing QAM that compensate for these I/Q impairments. Using these variants, we engineer high-quality phase-modulated radio-frequency (rf) signals with a large phase modulation index of 1.01 radians, a maximum modulation frequency of 3 MHz, a tunable carrier wave frequency range of 450 MHz to 4 GHz, and I/Q errors of less than 2.25 % over the entire carrier wave frequency range., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The determination of the fraction of energy deposited in the coolant is required for the setup of accurate thermal-hydraulic calculations in reactor core analysis. This study focuses on assessing this fraction and analysing the neutronic and photonic processes contributing to energy deposition in Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFRs). Using OpenMC, coupled neutron-photon transport calculations were performed within a fuel pin cell geometry, representative of the one under development at \textsl{new}cleo. Additionally, the implementation of lattice geometry was tested to gauge the impact of reflective boundary conditions on computational efficiency. In the context of a surface-based algorithm, the pin geometry has proven to be computationally more cost-effective. The fraction of energy deposited in the LFR coolant was evaluated at $\sim5.6$\%, surpassing that of pressurised water Reactors ($\lessapprox 3\%$), with photon interactions emerging as the principal contributor. The influence of bremsstrahlung radiation was also considered, revealing minor impact compared to other photonic processes. Given the continuous exploration of various core designs and the expectation of diverse operational conditions, a parametric analysis was undertaken by varying the coolant temperature and pitch values. Temperature changes did not significantly affect the results, while modifying the pitch induced a rise in the fraction of deposited energy in lead, highlighting its dependence on the coolant mass. This mass effect was explored in various fuel assembly designs based on the ALFRED benchmark and on the typical assembly model proposed by \textsl{new}cleo, leading to a correlation function for the prediction of coolant heating in realistic assemblies from simple pin cell calculations.

The three natural decay chains have short-lived daughter elements, and the existence of these radioelements makes it possible for alpha and beta particle emissions to be generated at the same place and the same time. We show theoretically that such time and space coincidences (TSCs) can be detected efficiently by suitable autoradiographic systems using an algorithm that is six times more efficient than an approach based on the classical slicing of space-time. Two types of TSC coexist: true TSCs, resulting from the decay of short-lived daughter elements, and random TSCs. True TSCs are predictable and their numbers vary linearly with activity; the prediction of true alpha/alpha and alpha/alpha/alpha TSCs of the 235U chain is presented. Random coincidences are also predictable using Poisson's law. They vary quadratically as a function of activity. Examination of the case of an uranium ore at secular equilibrium shows that the observed alpha/alpha coincidences result from the sum of random and true TSCs. For high uranium contents, random coincidences predominate. Magnetic microcalorimeters (MMCs) have become a key technology for applications requiring outstanding energy resolution, fast signal rise time and excellent linearity. MMCs measure the temperature rise upon absorption of a single particle within a particle absorber by using a paramagnetic temperature sensor that is thermally coupled to the absorber. The design and fabrication of the particle absorber is key for excellent detector performance. Here, we present a microfabrication process for free-standing particle absorbers made of two stacked and independently electroplated high-purity Au layers. This enables, for example, embedding of radioactive sources within the absorber for realizing a 4$\pi$ detection geometry in radionuclide metrology or preparing detector arrays with variable quantum efficiency and energy resolution as requested for future applications in high energy physics. Due to careful optimization of photoresist processing and electroplating parameters, the Au films are of very high purity and record-breaking residual resistivity ratio values above 40, allowing for fast internal absorber thermalization., Comment: Submitted to "Journal of Applied Physics"

We present a monoenergetic positron beam specifically tailored to the needs of (near-) surface positron annihilation spectroscopy. The Setup for LOw-energy Positron Experiments (SLOPE) comprises a high-activity 22Na source, a tungsten moderator, electrostatic extraction and acceleration, magnetic beam guidance, as well as an analysis chamber with a movable sample holder and a {\gamma}-ray detection system. The tungsten moderator foil, biased between 0 and 30 V, in combination with the HV-biasable sample holder, enables positron implantation energies between 3 eV and 40 keV. At low energies (<20 eV), the count rate typically amounts to 4400 counts per second, and the beam diameter is smaller than 12 +/- 3 mm. We conduct phase space simulations of the positron beam using COMSOL Multiphysics (c) to characterize the beam properties and compare the findings with the experimentally determined energy-dependent beam diameter. To showcase the capabilities of SLOPE, we perform studies of positronium (Ps) formation on boehmite and depth-resolved coincidence Doppler-broadening spectroscopy (CDBS) of copper. In particular, the Ps formation at the hydrogen-terminated surface of boehmite is found to be maximum at a positron implantation energy of 10 eV. The range of positron energies for which we observe Ps formation agrees with the hydrogen ionization energy.

Scintillations of radio frequency signals due to the ionosphere, despite having been studied for decades, is still an active area of research. Of particular interest is the scintillations near the geomagnetic equator, where such scintillations can be strong enough to cause disruptions to satellite communications. In this paper, a low cost system to monitor VHF scintillations is described. The system called the Personal Ionospheric Experiment (PIE) makes use of a widely available software defined radio (SDR) to perform the measurements. The use of an SDR vastly enhances the flexibility, especially in environments with non-negligible radio frequency interference (RFI). A simple technique to effectively subtract out transient RFI commonly found in radio data is detailed, and tested with data collected over several months. The utility of the proposed system is demonstrated with the analysis of a night-time scintillation patch; a few daytime scintillations are also reported. Therefore this paper demonstrates the feasibility of conducting useful low-cost radio science experiments in semi-urban locations with RFI, encouraging similar citizen science initiatives., Comment: Submitted to AGU Earth and Space Science. Mechanical testing with sub-sized specimens plays an important role in the nuclear industry, facilitating tests in confined experimental spaces with lower irradiation levels and accelerating the qualification of new materials. The reduced size of specimens results in different material behavior at the microscale, mesoscale, and macroscale, in comparison to standard-sized specimens, which is referred to as the specimen size effect. Although analytical models have been proposed to correlate the properties of sub-sized specimens to standard-sized specimens, these models lack broad applicability across different materials and testing conditions. The objective of this study is to create the first large public dataset of tensile properties for sub-sized specimens used in nuclear structural materials. We performed an extensive literature review of relevant publications and extracted over 1,000 tensile testing records comprising 54 parameters including material type and composition, manufacturing information, irradiation conditions, specimen dimensions, and tensile properties. The dataset can serve as a valuable resource to investigate the specimen size effect and develop computational methods to correlate the tensile properties of sub-sized specimens., Comment: 18 pages

The thermionic gridded gun is described which generates short electron bunches for further acceleration in a Nb3Sn conduction cooled SRF linac. The gun is built into the first cavity of the 250 keV injector [1] for the 20 kW, 10 MeV, 1.3 GHz CW conduction cooled one-cavity linac. The beam current is 2 mA. The RF gun design is presented as well as the results of perveance measurements, which are in a good agreement with the design parameters. The design of the RF resonator of the gun is presented also. The ALICE ITS3 project foresees the use of ultra-light MAPS, developed in the 65 nm imaging process, for the vertex detector in the ALICE experiment at the LHC to drastically improve the vertexing performance. This new development, initiated by an international consortium of the ALICE ITS3 collaboration and the CERN EP R&D project, enhances the overall MAPS performance. Small-scale prototypes are designed to study the analogue properties of the TPSCo 65 nm technology and compare the charge collection performance in different processes, pitches, pixel geometries, and irradiation levels. Recent results from lab and test-beam characterisation detailing the efficiency and the spatial resolution of the APTS with different pixel geometries and pitches satisfy the ALICE ITS3 requirements. A quantitative evolution of the charge collection and sharing among pixels is evident in the CE-65 with different in-pixel readouts. Attaining a spatial resolution better than 3 $\mu$m with a 10 $\mu$m pitch and over 99% efficiency in the moderate irradiation environment of ALICE also supports the viability of using 65 nm MAPS for FCC-ee vertex detectors.

Brownian thermal noise of thin-film coatings is a fundamental limit for high-precision experiments based on optical resonators such as gravitational-wave interferometers. Here we present the results of a research activity aiming to develop lower-noise ion-beam sputtered silicon nitride thin films compliant with the very stringent requirements on optical loss of gravitational-wave interferometers. In order to test the hypothesis of a correlation between the synthesis conditions of the films and their elemental composition and optical and mechanical properties, we varied the voltage, current intensity and composition of the sputtering ion beam, and we performed a broad campaign of characterizations. While the refractive index was found to monotonically depend on the beam voltage and linearly vary with the N/Si ratio, the optical absorption appeared to be strongly sensitive to other factors, as yet unidentified. However, by systematically varying the deposition parameters, an optimal working point was found. Thus we show that the loss angle and extinction coefficient of our thin films can be as low as $(1.0 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{-4}$ rad at $\sim$2.8 kHz and $(6.4 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-6}$ at 1064 nm, respectively, after thermal treatment at 900 $^{\circ}$C. Such loss angle value is the lowest ever measured on this class of thin films. We then used our silicon nitride thin films to design and produce a multi-material mirror coating showing a thermal noise amplitude of $(10.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-18}$ m Hz$^{-1/2}$ at 100 Hz, which is 25\% lower than in current mirror coatings of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo interferometers, and an optical absorption as low as $(1.9 \pm 0.2)$ parts per million at 1064 nm.

Sterile neutrinos are a minimal extension of the Standard Model of particle physics and a promising candidate for dark matter if their mass is in the keV-range. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN), equipped with a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector array, the TRISTAN detector, will be capable of searching for these keV-scale sterile neutrinos by investigating the kinematics of the tritium $\beta$-decay. This measurement will be performed after the completion of the neutrino mass measurement campaign. To detect a sterile neutrino signal with a high sensitivity, a profound understanding of the detector response is required. In this work, we report on the characterization of a 7-pixel TRISTAN prototype detector with a laser system. We present the experimental results obtained in high-resolution scans of the detector surface with a focused laser beam and demonstrate how the charge collection and the timing of the signals generated in the detector is related to the detector geometry. Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) is a scanning probe technique aimed at quantitative characterization of local thermal properties at the length scale down to tens of nanometers. With many probe designs and approaches to interpretation of probe responses, there is a need for a universal framework, which would allow probe calibration and comparison of probe performance. Here, we have developed a calibration framework based on an abstracted, formal, probe model for active SThM probes. The calibration can be accomplished through measurements with two or three calibration samples. Requirements to calibration samples are described with examples of structures of suitable samples identified in published literature. A link to a published experimental work indirectly verifying the proposed procedure is provided. The calibration does not require knowledge of internal probe properties and yields a small and universal set of parameters that can be used to quantify thermal resistance presented to the probe by samples as well as to characterize active-mode SThM probes of any type and at any measurement frequency. We have illustrated how the probe calibration parameters can be used to guide probe design. The increasing computing power and bandwidth of programmable digital devices opens new possibilities in the field of real-time processing of HEP data. The LHCb collaboration is exploiting these technology advancements in various ways to enhance its capability for complex data reconstruction in real time. Amongst them is the real-time reconstruction of hits in the VELO pixel detector, by means of real-time cluster-finding embedded in the readout board firmware. This reconstruction, in addition to saving data-acquisition bandwidth and high-level trigger computing resources, also enables further useful applications in precision monitoring and diagnostics of LHC beam conditions. In fact, clusters of pixels, being more reliable and robust indications of physical particle hits than raw pixel counts, are also exempt from the complications associated to the reconstruction of tracks, that involves alignment issues and is sensitive to multi-layer efficiency products. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a flexible system embedded in the readout firmware of the VELO detector, allowing real-time measurement of cluster density in several parts of the detector simultaneously, and separately for every bunch ID, for every single LHC collision, without any slowdown of data acquisition. The advent of back-illuminated complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors and their well-known advantages over charge-coupled devices (CCDs) make them an attractive technology for future X-ray missions. However, numerous challenges remain, including improving their depletion depth and identifying effective methods to calculate per-pixel gain conversion. We have tested a commercial Sony IMX290LLR CMOS sensor under X-ray light using an $^{55}$Fe radioactive source and collected X-ray photons for $\sim$15 consecutive days under stable conditions at regulated temperatures of 21{\deg}C and 26{\deg}C. At each temperature, the data set contained enough X-ray photons to produce one spectrum per pixel consisting only of single-pixel events. We determined the gain dispersion of its 2.1 million pixels using the peak fitting and the Energy Calibration by Correlation (ECC) methods. We measured a gain dispersion of 0.4\% at both temperatures and demonstrated the advantage of the ECC method in the case of spectra with low statistics. The energy resolution at 5.9 keV after the per-pixel gain correction is improved by $\gtrsim$10 eV for single-pixel and all event spectra, with single-pixel event energy resolution reaching $123.6\pm 0.2$ eV, close to the Fano limit of silicon sensors at room temperature. Finally, our long data acquisition demonstrated the excellent stability of the detector over more than 30 days under a flux of $10^4$ photons per second., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in JATIS

Thompson-Lampard type calculable capacitors (TLCC) serve as electrical capacitance standards, enabling the realization of the farad in the International System of Units (SI) with a combined uncertainty on the order of one part in $10^8$. This paper presents an electrostatic finite element (FEM) simulation study focusing on the mechanical imperfections inherent in the developed second generation TLCC at LNE and their influence on the combined uncertainty of the practical realization of the farad. In particular, this study establishes the acceptable tolerances for deviations from perfect geometrical arrangements of the TLCC electrodes required to achieve the target relative uncertainty of one part in $10^8$. The simulation predictions are compared with corresponding experimental observations which were conducted with the help of the sub-micron level control of the standard's electrode geometry. In the second generation of the LNE's TLCC, the uncertainty contribution from mechanical imperfections was reduced by at least a factor of 4, as demonstrated by the present FEM analysis. Combined with other improvements, the standard's overall uncertainty meets the target level.

Dosimetry in BNCT poses significant challenges due to the indirect effect of neutrons interacting with elements within the body and uncertainties associated with the uptake of boron compounds used in clinical practice. Current treatment planning relies on unconventional estimates of boron tumor uptake derived from prior PET scans and thus, an online boron-uptake monitor would be highly convenient. This work presents the first pilot experiments carried out at ILL-Grenoble with the high-efficiency Compton camera i-TED, hereby aiming at demonstrating its applicability for BNCT dosimetry by introducing real-time measurement of the boron concentration and imaging capabilities of spatial dose distribution. In this experiment, we measured the $^{10}$B uptake of different cancer cells of tongue squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma and glioblastoma treated with BPA (80~ppm of $^{10}$B). The samples were irradiated with the thermal neutron spectrum of ILL-Grenoble and the 478keV $\gamma$-rays from the $^{7}$Li de-excitation after the neutron-boron reaction were registered both with the Compton imager and the high-sensitivity FIPPS HPGe array. These series of measurements allowed us to demonstrate the imaging capabilities of the Compton imaging device for this type of application, as well as to assess its sensitivity, which was found to be below 1 $\mu$g of $^{10}$B., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the Special Issue of Applied Radiation and Isotopes associated to the 20th International Congress on Neutron Capture Therapy (20th ICNCT)

Purpose: The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), also known as JUNO-TAO. Located close to one of the reactors of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, TAO will measure the antineutrino energy spectrum precisely as a reference spectrum for JUNO. The data acquisition (DAQ) system is designed to acquire data from the TAO readout electronics and process it with software trigger and data compression algorithms. The data storage bandwidth is limited by the onsite network to be less than 100 Mb/s. Methods: The system is designed based on a distributed architecture, with fully decoupled modules to facilitate customized design and implementation. It is divided into two main components: the data flow system and the online software. The online software serves as the foundation, providing the electronics configuration, the process management, the run control, and the information sharing. The data flow system facilitates continuous data acquisition from various electronic boards or trigger systems, assembles and processes raw data, and ultimately stores it on the disk. Results: The core functionality of the system has been designed and developed. The usability of the data flow system interface and the software trigger results have been verified during the pre-installation testing phase. Conclusion: The DAQ system has been deployed for the TAO experiment. It has also successfully been applied to the integration test of the detector and electronics prototypes.

The detector group of Synchrotron SOLEIL is monitoring the performance of Energy-Resolved Detectors (EDX) and their associated electronics since last five years. A characterization procedure has been developed for this purpose and for Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) of new EDXs installed at beamlines. The present study aims to detect helium-3 in nickel-based metal nano-composites doped with zirconia, which exhibited anomalous heat generation when exposed to hydrogen gas at approximately 450{\deg}C. Two complementary analytical techniques were employed: Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) utilizing 1.4 MeV deuteron beams from a tandem accelerator, and Thermal Desorption Spectrometry (TDS) using a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Both methods successfully detected helium-3 in the samples. Given the extreme rarity of this isotope, its presence strongly suggests the occurrence of nuclear reactions within the nickel-containing materials. These findings lend support to the 4H/TSC (4 Hydrogen/Tetrahedral Symmetric Condensate) model, which uniquely predicts helium-3 as one of the primary reaction products., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Image color consistency is the key problem in digital imaging consistency when creating datasets. Here, we propose an improved 3D Thin-Plate Splines (TPS3D) color correction method to be used, in conjunction with color charts (i.e. Macbeth ColorChecker) or other machine-readable patterns, to achieve image consistency by post-processing. Also, we benchmark our method against its former implementation and the alternative methods reported to date with an augmented dataset based on the Gehler's ColorChecker dataset. Benchmark includes how corrected images resemble the ground-truth images and how fast these implementations are. Results demonstrate that the TPS3D is the best candidate to achieve image consistency. Furthermore, our Smooth-TPS3D method shows equivalent results compared to the original method and reduced the 11-15% of ill-conditioned scenarios which the previous method failed to less than 1%. Moreover, we demonstrate that the Smooth-TPS method is 20% faster than the original method. Finally, we discuss how different methods offer different compromises between quality, correction accuracy and computational load.

We present the characterization of the photonic waveguide resonator using confocal laser scanning microscopy imaging method. Free space TEM$_{00}$ laser mode is coupled into quasi-TE$_{0}$ waveguide mode using confocal microscopy via a diffractive grating coupler and vice versa. Our work includes the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a silicon nitride racetrack-shaped resonator of length ~ 165 um. We illustrate clear evidence of resonance excitation from the confocal microscope image and demonstrate loaded Q-factor and finesse ~ 8.2 \pm 0.17 * 10^4 and ~ 180 \pm 3.5, respectively. We further demonstrate its one application in air density sensing by measuring the resonance wavelength shifts with variation in environment air pressure. Our work impacts spectroscopy, imaging, and sensing applications of single or ensemble atoms or molecules coupled to photonic devices. Additionally, our study highlights the potential of confocal microscopy for analyzing photonic components on large-scale integrated circuits, providing high-resolution imaging and spectral characterization., Comment: 12 pages, 19 figures

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are the state-of-the-art technology in single-photon detection with solid-state detectors. Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs), the key element of SiPMs, can now be manufactured in CMOS processes, facilitating the integration of a SPAD array into custom monolithic ASICs. This allows implementing features such as signal digitization, masking, full hit-map readout, noise suppression, and photon counting in a monolithic CMOS chip. The complexity of the off-chip readout chain is thereby reduced. These new features allow new applications for digital SiPMs, such as 4D-tracking of charged particles, where spatial resolutions of the order of $10 \mu m$ and timestamping with time resolutions of a few tens of ps are required. A prototype of a digital SiPM was designed at DESY using the LFoundry $150 nm$ CMOS technology. Various studies were carried out in the laboratory and at the DESY II test-beam facility to evaluate the sensor performance in Minimum Ionizing Particles (MIPs) detection. The direct detection of charged particles was investigated for bare prototypes and assemblies coupling dSiPMs and thin LYSO crystals. Spatial resolution $\sim20 \mu m$ and a full-system time resolution of $\sim50 ps$ are measured using bare dSiPMs in direct MIP detection. We demonstrate a self-homodyne detection method to stabilize a continuous-wave 1550-nm laser to a 1-km optical fiber delay line, achieving a frequency instability of 6.3x10-15 at a 16-ms averaging time. This result, limited by fiber thermal noise, is achieved without the need for a vacuum system, highlighting the potential of our approach for ultra-stable laser systems in non-laboratory environments. The system utilizes only a few passive fiber optic components and a single balanced photodetector, significantly simplifying the laser stabilization process while maintaining high performance. We introduce the holographic air-quality monitor (HAM) system, uniquely tailored for monitoring large particulate matter (PM) over 10 um in diameter, i.e., particles critical for disease transmission and public health but overlooked by most commercial PM sensors. The HAM system utilizes a lensless digital inline holography (DIH) sensor combined with a deep learning model, enabling real-time detection of PMs, with greater than 97% true positive rate at less than 0.6% false positive rate, and analysis of PMs by size and morphology at a sampling rate of 26 liters per minute (LPM), for a wide range of particle concentrations up to 4000 particles/L. Such throughput not only significantly outperforms traditional imaging-based sensors but also rivals some lower-fidelity, non-imaging sensors. Additionally, the HAM system is equipped with additional sensors for smaller PMs and various air quality conditions, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of indoor air quality. The performance of the DIH sensor within the HAM system was evaluated through comparison with brightfield microscopy, showing high concordance in size measurements. The efficacy of the DIH sensor was also demonstrated in two two-hour experiments under different environments simulating practical conditions with one involving distinct PM-generating events. These tests highlighted the HAM system's advanced capability to differentiate PM events from background noise and its exceptional sensitivity to irregular, large-sized PMs of low concentration., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Challenges in scaling up noble-liquid time projection chambers prompted the exploration of new detection concepts. The liquid hole-multiplier (LHM) was introduced as a potential component, enabling the detection of ionization electrons and VUV photons. Prior studies focused on perforated electrodes coated with CsI immersed in the liquid and electroluminescence amplification produced on a bubble trapped underneath. However, the performance was hindered by electron transfer across the liquid-gas interface. Here, we explored a bubble-free variant, placing a CsI-coated Thick Gas Electron Multiplier electrode below the liquid-gas interface to improve the transfer efficiency across it. Results show >5-fold improvement in the S1'/S2 ratio (a proxy for the photon detection efficiency (PDE)) compared to the bubble-assisted LHM. Although the achieved PDE is still below expectation ($\sim$4%), we propose potential improvements to enhance the performance of this detector., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Microelectronic magnetic sensors are essential in diverse applications, including automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. Hall-effect devices hold the largest share of the magnetic sensor market, and they are particularly valued for their reliability, low cost and CMOS compatibility. This paper introduces a novel 3-axis Hall-effect sensor element based on an inverted pyramid structure, realized by leveraging MEMS micromachining and CMOS processing. The devices are manufactured by etching the pyramid openings with TMAH and implanting the sloped walls with n-dopants to define the active area. Through the use of various bias-sense detection modes, the device is able to detect both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields within a single compact structure. In addition, the offset can be significantly reduced by one to three orders of magnitude by employing the current-spinning method. The device presented in this work demonstrated high in-plane and out-of-plane current- and voltage-related sensitivities ranging between 64.1 to 198 V A$^{-1}$ T$^{-1}$ and 14.8 to 21.4 mV V$^{-1}$ T$^{-1}$, with crosstalk below 3.7 %. The sensor exhibits a thermal noise floor which corresponds to approximately 0.5 $\mu$T/$\sqrt{Hz}$ at 1.31 V supply. This novel Hall-effect sensor represents a promising and simpler alternative to existing state-of-the-art 3-axis magnetic sensors, offering a viable solution for precise and reliable magnetic field sensing in various applications such as position feedback and power monitoring., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures.
