Variations in the size of animals of the same species but of different sex are called sexual size dimorphism. The aim of this study was to compare the biometrics between males and females of the Sanmartinero creole bovine, of Colombia, to establish if sexual dimorphism appears in the breed. A total of 94 animals (16 uncastrated males and 78 females, average age of 4.3 ± 1.4 and 4.2 ± 2.3 years, respectively) from three different farms were measured. A total of 21 linear variables were obtained using standard morphometric methods and live weight. A one-way NPMANOVA was used to evaluate between sexes, ages, and farms, a Principal Component Analysis was used to detect the most discriminating variables, and a multivariate regression used age as an independent value. Statistically significant differences were reflected between sexes (p = 0.033) and not by age and farms. The variables that differentiated the most between males and females were those related to size (thoracic circumference, body length, dorso-sternal diameter, height at the withers, height at the rump, and horn length), variables that were biased toward males, although only the height at the withers and the rump were the ones that presented statistically significant differences.

The variation in the dimensions of the body of living beings in relation to their size, function, or shape is known as allometry. Allometry studies allow the analysis of the function of body structures and their relationship with the performance and survival of breeds and species. The aim of this study was to describe the ontogenetic characteristics of the weight of certain bone elements of the Sanmartinero creole bovine breed, from an early age (6 months) until maturity. A total of 79 females of the Sanmartinero creole bovine breed with an age range of 0.5 to 10 years were studied. Body measurements were obtained individually using standard procedures: cannon perimeter, thoracic perimeter, body length, withers height, and body weight. Functional and production indices were obtained for animals aged more than 3 years (n = 53): corporal index, anamorphosis index, dactylo thoracic index, and the relative thickness of the cannon. The correlation between body weight and the cannon perimeter showed no trend towards a plateau. In the Sanmartinero creole bovine, therefore, a very early development of the cannon perimeter is detected, which could lead to bone fragility in heavier animals. Therefore, data suggest little harmony with appendicular bone development, i.e., with less robust cannons which are those necessary to support body mass. It is suggested that in genetic improvement programs of the Sanmartinero creole bovine, the measurement of the cannon perimeter, the withers height, and the thoracic perimeter should be considered.

The native grasses of the flooded savannah ecosystem are produced under natural conditions and there is little information on the productive and nutritional response to the application of fertilizers. They are proposed as a strategy for adaptation to climate change and for the sustainable development of livestock farming. The aim of the study was to evaluate the response to low doses of fertilization of native grasses ("bank" grasses: Paspalum plicatulum, Panicum versicolor, and Paspalum sp. "Low" grasses: Leersia hexandra and Hymenachne amplexicaulis) in flooded savannah conditions. The green forage samples were taken in a 1 m2 frame at 28-, 35-, and 42-day cutting intervals and biomass production was estimated with and without fertilization. After 35 days, the nutritional composition was analyzed by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). The effect of fertilization and the grasses × cutting interval interaction influenced (p < 0.05) green forage (GF, t/ha) and dry matter (DM, t/ha). The effect of fertilization and the grasses × fertilization interaction on the nutritional composition only influenced the content of calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) in the "low" grasses, while in the "bank" grasses, it influenced the sodium (Na) content (p < 0.05). The application of fertilizers generated significant differences in forage yield, but not in the general nutritional composition of grasses. However, some numerical variations were observed in favor of fertilized grasses. According to these results, the application of fertilizers will not be required to increase the value of the nutritional composition. Native grasses constitute an important sustainable food resource for livestock in flooded savannah ecosystems. Purpose: This research study aims to determine the importance of non-financial rewards as an element of total compensation and its relationship to human resource management mediated by the relationship of strategic corporate governance in the technology sector. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative approach of extrinsic and intrinsic non-financial rewards, human resource management and strategic management of the company has been carried out. To obtain the necessary data, self-administered questionnaire were used. The results obtained from a sample of 97 human resource managers in the technology sector proves the causal relationship between each type of non-financial reward and human resource management, as well as its link to the strategic management. Findings: Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM), significant relationships occur between human resource management and strategic management, followed by the relationship between human resource management and intrinsic rewards. A significant relationship exists between human resource management and direct and indirect intrinsic rewards through strategic management. In turn, only an indirect relationship exists between human resource management and extrinsic non-financial rewards through strategic management, but there is no direct relationship. Originality/value: These findings are highly important for human resource management, since it could allow the development of new compensation strategies with non-financial rewards under strategic management helping technology companies to generate competitive advantage by means of the same.

Highlights: • Some archaeological results obtained using SAR-X images received through the PAZ satellite and applied to a part of what was called Ager Cosanus are shown in this article. • The study has been completed with the analysis of multispectral images TripleSAT and Sentinel-2A and the historical aerial photos from 1944 and 1954. • The possibilities of using PAZ images treated multi-temporally as a high-resolution panchromatic image applicable to multispectral optical images of the type Sentinel-2 were tested. Abstract: Some archaeological results are shown in this article, which have been generated from the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-X images obtained from the PAZ satellite and applied to part of what was called Ager Cosanus, that is, the territory of the city of Cosa, which was one of the first maritime colonies of Rome in the heart of Etruscan territory. Our study has been carried out mainly based on previous works in which a set of images was used to improve the quality of the resulting image, reducing the noise caused by the speckle of the radar images and maintaining the quality of the spatial resolution that can be obtained from these images (1.25 m/pixel). More specifically, a set of images obtained between 2019 and 2021 was used. The study has been completed with the analysis of multispectral images TripleSAT and Sentinel-2A, the historical aerial photos taken from 1944 and 1954, and the use of the historical cadastre of Tuscany, prepared at the beginning of the 19th century. As an addition, the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) of the Region of Tuscany was used, on which various functions of the Relief Visualization Tool (RVT) programme have been applied, complementing or contrasting the results. It can be confirmed that the multi-temporal treatment of SAR PAZ images provides better results than an individualised analysis of the image. Finally, it is of great interest to verify the results of studies using new technologies, where it was previously possible to resort only to prospecting on the ground and to analogical aerial photography in black and white. In this case, the Sinistra Decumano I (SDI) structure was seen, which Castagnoli observed in the aerial photography, but of which he only located materials on the ground and it was visualised both in individualised PAZ images and in Sentinel-2.

Abstract Background Early-stage invasive ductal carcinoma displays high survival rates due to early detection and treatments. However, there is still a chance of relapse of 3–15% after treatment. The aim of this study was to uncover the distinctive transcriptomic characteristics and monitoring prognosis potential of peritumoral tissue in early-stage cases. Methods RNA was isolated from tumoral, peritumoral, and non-tumoral breast tissue from surgical resection of 10 luminal early-stage invasive ductal carcinoma patients. Transcriptome expression profiling for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identification was carried out through microarray analysis. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathways enrichment analysis were explored for functional characterization of identified DEGs. Protein-Protein Interactions (PPI) networks analysis was performed to identify hub nodes of peritumoral tissue alterations and correlated with Overall Survival and Relapse Free Survival. Results DEGs closely related with cell migration, extracellular matrix organization, and cell cycle were upregulated in peritumoral tissue compared to non-tumoral. Analyzing PPI networks, we observed that the proximity to tumor leads to the alteration of gene modules involved in cell proliferation and differentiation signaling pathways. In fact, in the peritumoral area were identified the top ten upregulated hub nodes including CDK1, ESR1, NOP58, PCNA, EZH2, PPP1CA, BUB1, TGFBR1, CXCR4, and CCND1. A signature performed by four of these hub nodes (CDK1, PCNA, EZH2, and BUB1) was associated with relapse events in untreated luminal breast cancer patients. Conclusions In conclusion, our study characterizes in depth breast peritumoral tissue providing clues on the changes that tumor signaling could cause in patients with early-stage breast cancer. We propose that the use of a four gene signature could help to predict local relapse. Overall, our results highlight the value of peritumoral tissue as a potential source of new biomarkers for early detection of relapse and improvement in invasive ductal carcinoma patient’s prognosis.

Las organizaciones educativas están evolucionando, y los modelos de gestión se están actualizando para abordar las necesidades educativas. En consecuencia, el papel del líder intermedio (LI) ha despertado un interés significativo entre los investigadores. El cambio de un liderazgo singular en las organizaciones a la distribución de responsabilidades entre sus miembros ha llevado a un aumento de la investigación. El objetivo del estudio es analizar el creciente interés en el liderazgo intermedio y la literatura científica publicada. Para lograrlo, se analizó el rendimiento bibliométrico con un enfoque específico en LI en educación. Nuestro conjunto de datos incluye 195 artículos publicados entre 2010 y 2023 en la base de datos de Web of Science (WoS). El análisis bibliométrico determinó la distribución de publicaciones relacionadas, junto con un análisis de los grupos temáticos y conceptos asociados con LI, entre otros datos relevantes. Los resultados indicaron que el LI en educación ha aumentado sustancialmente en los últimos cinco años, y la estructura temática ha pasado de los modelos de gestión tradicionales al estudio de los profesionales de la educación como líderes intermedios. Además, el LI es un tema en crecimiento en la investigación educativa, con temas emergentes para el futuro del liderazgo educativo.

Drug discovery and development is a time-consuming process that involves identifying, designing, and testing new drugs to address critical medical needs. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has played a vital role in technological advancements and has shown promising results in various drug discovery and development stages. ML can be categorized into supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and reinforcement learning. Supervised learning is the most used category, helping organizations solve several real-world problems. This study presents a comprehensive survey of supervised learning algorithms in drug design and development, focusing on their learning process and succinct mathematical formulations, which are lacking in the literature. Additionally, the study discusses widely encountered challenges in applying supervised learning for drug discovery and potential solutions. This study will be beneficial to researchers and practitioners in the pharmaceutical industry as it provides a simplified yet comprehensive review of the main concepts, algorithms, challenges, and prospects in supervised learning.

Abstract Anthropogenic activities are causing detrimental changes to coastal plants– namely seagrass, mangrove, and tidal marshes. Looking beyond recent times to past vegetation dynamics is critical to assess the response and resilience of an environment to change. Here, we develop a high-resolution multi-proxy approach, providing a new evidence base to decipher long-term change in coastal plant communities. Combining targeted environmental DNA analysis with chemical analysis of soils, we reconstructed 4,000 years of change at a temperate wetland on Torrens Island South Australia and identified an ecosystem shift that occurred ~ 1000 years ago. What was once a subtidal seagrass system shifted to an intertidal mangrove environment that persists at this site today. We demonstrate that high-resolution historical changes in coastal vegetation can be attained using these proxies. This approach could be applied to other ecosystems to improve the way we protect, conserve, and restore vegetated ecosystems.

Abstract With the aim of helping researchers to develop intelligent operation and maintenance strategies, in this manuscript, an extensive 3-years Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition database of five Fuhrländer FL2500 2.5 MW wind turbines is presented. The database contains 312 analogous variables recorded at 5-minute intervals, from 78 different sensors. The reported values for each sensor are minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation. The database also contains the alarm events, indicating the system and subsystem and a small description. Finally, a set of functions to download specific subsets of the whole database is freely available in Matlab, R, and Python. To demonstrate the usefulness of this database, an illustrative example is given. In this example, different gearbox variables are selected to estimate a target variable to detect whether or not the estimate differs from the actual value provided for the sensor. By using this normality modelling approach, it is possible to detect rotor malfunction when the estimate differs from the actual measured value.

The field of medical informatics has been significantly transformed in recent years with the emergence of Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Large Language Models (LLM), providing new opportunities for innovative patient care solutions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of publicly available LLMs as symptom checkers for cardiological diseases by comparing their diagnostic capabilities in real disease cases. We employed a set of 9 models, including ChatGPT-4, OpenSource models, Google PaLM 2, and Meta’s LLaMA, to assess their diagnostic accuracy, reliability, and safety across various clinical scenarios. Our methodology involved presenting these LLMs with symptom descriptions and test results in Spanish, requiring them to provide specialist diagnoses and recommendations in English. This approach allowed us to compare the performance of each model, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations in a healthcare context. The results revealed varying levels of accuracy, precision, and sensitivity among the models, demonstrating the potential of LLMs to enhance medical education and patient care. By analysing the capabilities of each model, our study contributes to a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence’s role in medical diagnosis. We argue for the strategic implementation of LLMs in healthcare, emphasizing the importance of balancing sensitivity and realism to optimize patient outcomes.

Chemoresistance remains a major challenge in the treatment of breast and colorectal cancer. For this reason, finding reliable predictive biomarkers of response to chemotherapy has become a significant research focus in recent years. However, validating in vitro results may be problematic due to the outcome heterogeneity. In this study, we evaluate the use of tumorspheres as an in vitro model for validating biomarkers of chemoresistance in breast and colorectal cancer. Our investigation highlights the crucial role of inflammation-related pathways in modulating the response to chemotherapy. Using in silico approaches, we identified specific markers elevated in responders versus non-responders patients. These markers were consistently higher in three-dimensional (3D) tumorsphere models compared to traditional adherent cell culture models. Furthermore, the number of tumorspheres from breast and colorectal cancer cells increased in response to cisplatin and oxaliplatin treatment, respectively, whereas cell viability decreased in adherent cell culture. This differential response underscores the importance of the 3D tumorsphere model in mimicking the tumor microenvironment more accurately than adherent cell culture. The enhanced chemoresistance observed in the 3D tumorspheres model and their correlation of data with the in silico study suggest that 3D culture models are a better option to approach the in vivo model and also to validate in silico data. Our findings indicate that tumorspheres are an ideal model for validating chemoresistance biomarkers and exploring the interplay between inflammation and chemoresistance in breast and colon cancer.

We compute for the first time the τ data-driven Euclidean windows for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g−2. We show that τ-based results agree with the available lattice window evaluations and with the full result. On the intermediate window, where all lattice evaluations are rather precise and agree, τ-based results are compatible with them. This is particularly interesting, given that the disagreement of the e+e− data-driven result with the lattice values in this window is the main cause for their discrepancy, affecting the interpretation of the aμ measurement in terms of possible new physics.

Asymmetric studies can indicate disturbances in the developmental process. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is considered an indicator of stress. The Sanmartinero (SM) creole bovine is native to the department of Meta (Colombian Orinoquia) and its adaptation process has allowed it to live in extreme tropical environments. The aim of this cross-sectional and descriptive study was to present the current state of the knowledge of asymmetries in some cephalic characters of the SM creole bovine. A total of 94 animals were studied (18 uncastrated males and 76 females) from three different farms, with an age range of 0.5–10 years. For each animal, two measurements of the ear (width and length) and two measurements of the horn (perimeter and length) were obtained in vivo. The degree of asymmetry was calculated as (R − L)/(R + L). Bilateral differences pointed towards a fluctuating asymmetry (e.g., a random variation in the trait that is expected to be perfectly symmetrical) biased towards right for ear width and horn perimeter, and towards left for ear and horn length. Since the development of these structures—ears and horns—is under the control of the same set of genes, the fluctuating asymmetry could constitute a reflection of a normal condition.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) accounts for 15% of all breast cancers and is highly aggressive. Despite an initial positive response to chemotherapy, most patients experience rapid disease progression leading to relapse and metastasis. This is attributed to the presence of breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) within the tumor, which are characterized by self-renewal, pluripotency, and resistance mechanisms. Targeting BCSCs has become critical as conventional therapies fail to eradicate them due to a lack of specific targets. Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from turmeric (Curcuma longa), exhibits anticancer effects against breast cancer cells and BCSCs. The use of curcumin derivatives has been suggested as an approach to overcome the bioavailability and solubility problems of curcumin in humans, thereby increasing its anticancer effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cellular and molecular effects of six synthetic compounds derived from the natural polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) (TL1, TL2) and curcumin derivatives (TL3, TL4, TL5, and TL6) on a TNBC mesenchymal stem-like cell line. The activity of the compounds against BCSCs was also determined by a mammosphere inhibition assay and studying different BCSC markers by Western blotting. Finally, a drug combination assay was performed with the most promising compounds to evaluate their potential synergistic effects with the chemotherapeutic agents doxorubicin, cisplatin, and paclitaxel. The results showed that compounds exhibited specific cytotoxicity against the TNBC cell line and BCSCs. Interestingly, the combination of the curcumin derivative TL3 with doxorubicin and cisplatin displayed a synergistic effect in TNBC cells.

Resumen: La escasez de enfermeras es un fenómeno multicausal que afecta a todos los países y actualmente es una preocupación mundial. La infradotación de enfermeras pone en riesgo la sostenibilidad de los sistemas sanitarios y los resultados de salud de las personas. En España, históricamente no ha habido dificultades para atraer a nuevas generaciones de enfermeras. El déficit de enfermeras en España se explica por unas condiciones laborales precarias y una falta de desarrollo profesional que han provocado episodios de elevada migración internacional y abandono de la profesión. En este artículo se pone el foco en la evolución de diferentes indicadores de condiciones laborales de las enfermeras no especializadas, que son el grueso de la profesión. Estos indicadores permiten analizar el abandono de la profesión, la duración de los contratos, la dedicación a tiempo parcial o completa, y el abuso en la sobrecontratación. Se analizan los efectos de la COVID-19 y de la reforma laboral sobre estos indicadores. La COVID-19 redujo el abandono de la profesión y actualmente está en su cota más baja, y ha acelerado la necesidad de mejorar las condiciones laborales aumentando el porcentaje de contratos indefinidos y reduciendo la multiplicidad de contratos en un mismo mes. La reforma laboral ha ayudado a reducir el porcentaje de contratos temporales hasta situarse alrededor del 80% del total de los contratos, y ha reducido el número de enfermeras en España con más de un contrato en un mismo mes hasta situarse por debajo de las 3000 enfermeras de manera mantenida. Abstract: The nursing shortage is a multi-causal phenomenon that affects all countries and currently a global concern. The shortage of nurses jeopardizes the sustainability of health systems and the population health outcomes. Spain has historically had no difficulties in attracting new generations of nurses. The shortage of nurses is caused by the precarious working conditions and lack of professional development that have led to episodes of high international migration and abandonment of the profession. In this paper we focus on the evolution of different indicators of the working conditions of non-specialist nurses, who make up the bulk of the profession. These indicators allow us to analyse the abandonment of the profession, the duration of contracts, their full-time or part-time dedication and the excessive hiring. We have analysed the effect of COVID-19 and the labour reform on these indicators. COVID-19 reduced the abandonment of the profession and is currently at its lowest level, it has also accelerated the need to improve working conditions by increasing the percentage of permanent contracts and reducing the multiplicity of contracts in the same month. The labour reform has helped reduce the percentage of temporary contracts until reaching around 80% of the total contracts, and has reduced the number of nurses in Spain with more than one contract in the same month to below 3000 nurses on a sustained basis.

This work explores the ability to dynamically group the Wind Turbine (WT) of a Wind Farm (WF) based on the behavior of some of their Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) signals to detect the turbines that exhibit abnormal behavior. This study is centered on a small WF of five WTs and uses the observation that the same signals from different WTs in the same WF coherently evolve temporally in a time domain, describing very similar waveforms. In this contribution, averaged signals from the SCADA system are used and omit maximums, minimums and standard deviations, focusing mainly on velocities and other slowly varying signals. For the temporal analysis, sliding windows of different temporal durations are explored. The signals are encoded using the Discrete Cosine Transform, which reduces the problem’s dimensions. A hierarchical tree is built in each time window. Clusters are formed by pruning the tree using a threshold interpretable in terms of distance. It is unnecessary to work with an a priori known number of clusters. A protocol for enumerating the clusters based on the tree’s shape is then established, making it easier to follow the evolution of the clusters over time. The capability to automatically identify WTs whose signals differ from the group’s behavior can alert and program preventive maintenance operations on such WTs before a major breakdown occurs.

Metformin, a widely used anti-diabetic drug, has garnered attention for its potential in cancer management, particularly in breast and colorectal cancer. It is established that metformin reduces mitochondrial respiration, but its specific molecular targets within mitochondria vary. Proposed mechanisms include inhibiting mitochondrial respiratory chain Complex I and/or Complex IV, and mitochondrial glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, among others. These actions lead to cellular energy deficits, redox state changes, and several molecular changes that reduce hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetic patients. Clinical evidence supports metformin’s role in cancer prevention in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Moreover, in these patients with breast and colorectal cancer, metformin consumption leads to an improvement in survival outcomes and prognosis. The synergistic effects of metformin with chemotherapy and immunotherapy highlights its potential as an adjunctive therapy for breast and colorectal cancer. However, nuanced findings underscore the need for further research and stratification by molecular subtype, particularly for breast cancer. This comprehensive review integrates metformin-related findings from epidemiological, clinical, and preclinical studies in breast and colorectal cancer. Here, we discuss current research addressed to define metformin’s bioavailability and efficacy, exploring novel metformin-based compounds and drug delivery systems, including derivatives targeting mitochondria, combination therapies, and novel nanoformulations, showing enhanced anticancer effects.

Accurate power curve modeling is essential to continuously evaluate the performance of a wind turbine (WT). In this work, we characterize the wind power curves using SCADA data acquired at a frequency of 5 min in a wind farm (WF) consisting of five WTs. Regarding the non-parametric methods, we select artificial neural networks (ANNs) to make curve estimations. Given that, we have the curves provided by the manufacturer of the WTs given by some very precisely measured pair of wind speed and power points. We can evaluate the difference between the manufacturer characterization and the ones estimated with the data provided by the SCADA system. Before the estimation, we propose a method of filtering the anomalies based on the characteristics provided by the manufacturer. We use three-quarters of the available data for curve estimation and one-quarter for the test. One WT suffered a break in the test part, so we can check how the test estimates reflect this problem in its wind-power curve compared to the estimations obtained in the WTs that worked adequately.

Seagrass meadows store significant amounts of carbonate (CaCO _3 ) in sediment, contributing to coastal protection but potentially offsetting their effectiveness as carbon sinks. Understanding the accumulation of CaCO _3 and its balance with organic carbon (C _org ) in seagrass ecosystems is crucial for developing seagrass-based blue carbon strategies for climate change mitigation. However, CaCO _3 accumulation in seagrass meadows varies significantly across geographic regions, with notable data gaps in the Caribbean and Central America. Here, we sampled 10 seagrass meadows across an extensive island chain in The Bahamas, part of the largest seagrass ecosystem and one of the largest CaCO _3 banks globally, to evaluate CaCO _3 stock, accumulation rate, and its balance with C _org sequestration. Seagrass meadows in The Bahamas store 6405–8847 Tg of inorganic carbon (C _inorg ) in the upper meter sediment, with an annual accumulation rate of 38.3–52.9 Tg of C _inorg , highlighting these meadows as hotspots for CaCO _3 burial. CaCO _3 contributes 67 ± 8% (mean ± standard error) of the sediment accumulation, indicating its important role in seabed elevation. Sediment C _inorg showed no significant relationship with C _org , with an average C _org : C _inorg ratio of 0.069 ± 0.002, ∼ 10 times lower than the threshold (C _org : C _inorg ratio of about 0.63) at which seagrass ecosystem transition from CO _2 sources to sinks. However, the available air–sea gas flux measurement was only 1/5 of the calculated CO _2 emission expected from calcification, suggesting that part of the accumulated CaCO _3 is supported by allochthonous inputs. Furthermore, no perceivable relationship between seagrass density and either CaCO _3 stock or accumulation rate was observed, indicating that seagrass may play a limited role in supporting CaCO _3 production. Further studies on water chemistry, calcification rate, air–sea CO _2 flux, and comparison between seagrass and unvegetated habitats are required to elucidate the carbon budget of this globally significant ecosystem.

Friction is a pivotal factor influencing wrinkle formation in composite material shaping processes, particularly in novel thermoplastic composites like polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and low-melting polyaryletherketone (LM-PAEK) matrices reinforced with unidirectional carbon fibers. The aerospace sector lacks comprehensive data on the behavior of these materials under forming conditions, motivating this study’s objective to characterize the interlaminar friction of such high-performance thermoplastic composites across diverse temperatures and forming parameters. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were employed to analyze the thermomechanical behaviors of PEEK and LM-PAEK. These data guided friction tests covering room-to-forming temperatures. Horizontal pull-out fixed-plies tests were conducted to determine the friction coefficient and shear stress dependency concerning temperature, pressure, and pulling rate. Below the melting point, both materials adhered to Coulomb’s law for friction behavior. However, above the melting temperature, PEEK’s friction decreased while LM-PAEK’s friction increased with rising temperatures. These findings highlight the distinct responses of these materials to temperature variations, pulling rates, and pressures, emphasizing the need for further research on friction characterization around glass transition and melting temperatures to enhance our understanding of this phenomenon.

Introduction and Objectives: Radical cystectomy readmission rates remain high, with around 25% of patients readmitted to index and nonindex hospitals in 30 days. Nonindex readmissions have been associated with poorer outcomes, including longer lengths of stay and higher mortality rates. This study aimed to examine the associations of social factors (e.g., sex, race, socioeconomic status, insurance type, and resident location) on readmission to index versus nonindex hospitals and discharge disposition., Methods: We conducted a population-based retrospective study using the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) to identify patients diagnosed with nonmetastatic muscle-invasive bladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy in Pennsylvania between 2010 and 2018. Readmitted patients were identified using the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council data (PHC4). The primary outcome was readmission location (i.e., index or nonindex hospital) following radical cystectomy. We used chi-square tests for categorical variables, Wilcoxon rank sum test for continuous variables, multivariable logistic regression model to assess predictors of being readmitted to an index hospital and calculating the predicted probability of being admitted to an index hospital depending on discharge disposition., Results: A total of 517 patients were readmitted within 30-days after radical cystectomy. The majority of readmissions were index readmissions (83%). Median readmission hospital stay was 4 days (interquartile range [IQR] 4) for index and 5 days (IQR 7) for nonindex hospitals, P = 0.01. Patients readmitted to index hospitals had fewer comorbidities (median weighted Elixhauser Comorbidity Index 2 (IQR 2)) and lived in urban areas (89%). Discharge with home care was associated with a higher odds of index readmission (odds ratio, [OR] 2.40; 95% confidence interval, [CI] 1.25-4.52)., Conclusions: Patients residing in urban areas and with fewer comorbidities were more likely to be readmitted to index hospitals than nonindex hospitals. Socioeconomic status and insurance type did not correlate with the type of readmission. Background: Whether the optimization of cerebral oxygenation based on regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO 2 ) monitoring reduces the occurrence of cerebral ischemic lesions is unknown., Methods: This multicenter, randomized, controlled trial recruited adults admitted for scheduled carotid endarterectomy. Patients were randomized between the standard of care or optimization of cerebral oxygenation based on rSO 2 monitoring using near-infrared spectroscopy. In the intervention group, in case of a decrease in rSO 2 in the intervention, the following treatments were sequentially recommended: (1) increasing oxygenotherapy, (2) reducing the tidal volume, (3) legs up-raising, (4) performing a fluid challenge and (5) initiating vasopressor support. The primary endpoint was the number of new cerebral ischemic lesions detected using magnetic resonance imaging pre- and postoperatively. Secondary endpoints included new neurological deficits and mortality on day 120 after surgery., Results: Among the 879 patients who were randomized, 665 (75.7%) were men. There was no statistically significant difference between groups for the mean number of new cerebral ischemic lesions per patient up to 3 days after surgery: 0.35 (±1.05) in the standard group vs. 0.58 (±2.83), in the NIRS group; mean difference, 0.23 [95% CI, -0.06 to 0.52]; estimate, 0.22 [95% CI, -0.06 to 0.50]. New neurological deficits up to day 120 after hospital discharge were not different between the groups: 15 (3,39%) in the standard group vs. 42 (5,49%) in the NIRS group; absolute difference, 2,10 [95% CI, -0,62 to 4,82]. There was no significant difference between groups for the median [IQR] hospital length of stay: 4.0 [4.0-6.0] in the standard group vs. 5.0 [4.0-6.0] in the NIRS group; mean difference, -0.11 [95% CI, -0.65 to 0.44]. The mortality rate on day 120 was not different between the standard group (0.68%) vs. the NIRS group (0.92%); absolute difference = 0.24% [95% CI, -0.94 to 1.41]., Conclusions: Among patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy, optimization of cerebral oxygenation based on rSO 2 did not reduce the occurrence of cerebral ischemic lesions postoperatively compared with controlled hypertensive therapy., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01415648., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Objective: Psychomotor retardation is a core clinical component of Major Depressive Disorder responsible for disability and is known as a treatment response marker of biological treatments for depression. Our objective was to describe cognitive and motoric measures changes during a treatment by repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) within the THETAD-DEP trial for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and compare those performances at the end of treatment and one month after between responders (>50% improvement on MADRS score), partial responders (25-50%) and non-reponders (no clinically relevant improvement). Our secondary aim was to investigate baseline psychomotor performances associated with non-response and response even partial., Methods: Fifty-four patients with treatment-resistant unipolar depression and treated by either high frequency 10 Hz rTMS or iTBS for 4 weeks (20 sessions) underwent assessment including French Retardation Rating Scale for Depression (ERD), Verbal Fluency test, and Trail Making Test A. before, just after treatment and one month later., Results: 20 patients were responders (R, 21 partial responders (PR) and 13 non-responders (NR). rTMS treatment improved psychomotor performances in the R and PR groups unlike NR patients whose psychomotor performance was not enhanced by treatment. At baseline, participants, later identified as partial responders, showed significantly higher performances than non-responders., Conclusion: Higher cognitivo-motor performances at baseline may be associated with clinical improvement after rTMS treatment.
