This study reports the effects of changes in the waveform and frequency of radio frequency (RF) energy on the tissue ablation range. We developed a 70-watt RFA generator that provides sine and square waves and allows frequency control between 10 Hz and 500 kHz. The changes in the ablation range according to the waveform and frequency were observed using the developed generator. In the waveform variation test, the distance between the electrodes and the electrode type were changed for both waveforms with the frequency set to 500 kHz. In the frequency variation test, the waveform and electrode type were changed with the frequency set to 10, 100, and 500 kHz, while the distance between the electrodes was set to 20 mm. A fixed 45 voltage was applied using the bipolar method. RF energy was applied for 90 s in vitro. The temperature was regulated to not exceed 70°C. The ablation range was calculated using ImageJ software. The analysis results showed that the ablation range was larger with the square wave than with the sine wave and at 10 kHz than at 500 kHz. Decoupling dynamic touch signals in the optical tactile sensors is highly desired for behavioral tactile applications yet challenging because typical optical sensors mostly measure only static normal force and use imprecise multi-image averaging for dynamic force sensing. Here, we report a highly sensitive upconversion nanocrystals-based behavioral biometric optical tactile sensor that instantaneously and quantitatively decomposes dynamic touch signals into individual components of vertical normal and lateral shear force from a single image in real-time. By mimicking the sensory architecture of human skin, the unique luminescence signal obtained is axisymmetric for static normal forces and non-axisymmetric for dynamic shear forces. Our sensor demonstrates high spatio-temporal screening of small objects and recognizes fingerprints for authentication with high spatial-temporal resolution. Using a dynamic force discrimination machine learning framework, we realized a Braille-to-Speech translation system and a next-generation dynamic biometric recognition system for handwriting. It was demonstrated that ginsenosides exert anti-convulsive potentials and interleukin-6 (IL-6) is protective from excitotoxicity induced by kainate (KA), a model of temporal lobe epilepsy. Ginsenosides-mediated mitochondrial recovery is essential for attenuating KA-induced neurotoxicity, however, little is known about the effects of ginsenoside Re (GRe), one of the major ginsenosides. In this study, GRe significantly attenuated KA-induced seizures in mice. KA-induced redox changes were more evident in mitochondrial fraction than in cytosolic fraction in the hippocampus of mice. GRe significantly attenuated KA-induced mitochondrial oxidative stress (i.e. increases in reactive oxygen species, 4-hydroxynonenal, and protein carbonyl) and mitochondrial dysfunction (i.e. the increase in intra-mitochondrial Ca2+ and the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential). GRe or mitochondrial protectant cyclosporin A restored phospho-signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) and IL-6 levels reduced by KA, and the effects of GRe were reversed by the JAK2 inhibitor AG490 and the mitochondrial toxin 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP). Thus, we used IL-6 knockout (KO) mice to investigate whether the interaction between STAT3 and IL-6 is involved in the GRe effects. Importantly, KA-induced reduction of manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD-2) levels and neurodegeneration (i.e. astroglial inhibition, microglial activation, and neuronal loss) were more prominent in IL-6 KO than in wild-type (WT) mice. These KA-induced detrimental effects were attenuated by GRe in WT and, unexpectedly, IL-6 KO mice, which were counteracted by AG490 and 3-NP. Our results suggest that GRe attenuates KA-induced neurodegeneration via modulating mitochondrial oxidative burden, mitochondrial dysfunction, and STAT3 signaling in mice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evidence suggests that the neuroprotective effects of melatonin involve both receptor‐dependent and ‐independent actions. However, little is known about the effects of melatonin receptor activation on the kainate (KA) neurotoxicity. This study examined the effects of repeated post‐KA treatment with ramelteon, a selective agonist of melatonin receptors, on neuronal loss, cognitive impairment, and depression‐like behaviors following KA‐induced seizures. The expression of melatonin receptors decreased in neurons, whereas it was induced in astrocytes 3 and 7 days after seizures elicited by KA (0.12 μg/μL) in the hippocampus of mice. Ramelteon (3 or 10 mg/kg, i.p.) and melatonin (10 mg/kg, i.p.) mitigated KA‐induced oxidative stress and impairment of glutathione homeostasis and promoted the nuclear translocation and DNA binding activity of Nrf2 in the hippocampus after KA treatment. Ramelteon and melatonin also attenuated microglial activation but did not significantly affect astroglial activation induced by KA, despite the astroglial induction of melatonin receptors after KA treatment. However, ramelteon attenuated KA‐induced proinflammatory phenotypic changes in astrocytes. Considering the reciprocal regulation of astroglial and microglial activation, these results suggest ramelteon inhibits microglial activation by regulating astrocyte phenotypic changes. These effects were accompanied by the attenuation of the nuclear translocation and DNA binding activity of nuclear factor κB (NFκB) induced by KA. Consequently, ramelteon attenuated the KA‐induced hippocampal neuronal loss, memory impairment, and depression‐like behaviors; the effects were comparable to those of melatonin. These results suggest that ramelteon‐mediated activation of melatonin receptors provides neuroprotection against KA‐induced neurotoxicity in the mouse hippocampus by activating Nrf2 signaling to attenuate oxidative stress and restore glutathione homeostasis and by inhibiting NFκB signaling to attenuate neuroinflammatory changes. ABSTRACT Canine lymphoma, the most prevalent haematopoietic tumour in dogs, presents significant challenges in veterinary oncology. This study investigates the prognostic value of the neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in small‐sized dogs (≤10 kg) with multicentric lymphoma. In this retrospective study, we examined medical records and haematological data from 35 dogs to assess the association between NLR and two key outcomes: time‐to‐progression (TTP) and lymphoma‐specific survival (LSS) using Cox proportional hazards models. Our findings revealed a significant correlation between elevated NLR and a worse prognosis, as evidenced by TTP (p = 0.005) and LSS (p = 0.001). NLR is linked to increased hazard ratios (HRs) for the time‐to‐progression rate (TTPR) at 180, 360 and 540 days (p = 0.001, p = 0.003 and p = 0.005, respectively) and the lymphoma‐specific survival rate (LSSR) at the same intervals (p = 0.016, p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). Cutoff value of 3.764 for NLR was established, above which there is a significantly increased risk of early disease progression and decreased survival. Additionally, our analysis indicates that dogs with substage b exhibited earlier progression than those with substage a, evident in overall (p = 0.026) and TTPR at 180 days (p = 0.004), 360 days (p = 0.018), 540 days (p = 0.026) and LSSR at 180 days (p = 0.033). The results underscore the potential of NLR as a prognostic marker in cases of dogs ≤10 kg with multicentric lymphoma, suggesting that higher NLR is associated with a poorer prognosis. The growing concerns regarding cancer recurrence, unpredictable bone deficiencies, and postoperative bacterial infections subsequent to the surgical removal of bone tumors have highlighted the need for multifaceted bone scaffolds that afford tumor therapy, bacterial therapy, and effective vascularized bone reconstruction. However, challenging trilemma has emerged in the realm of bone scaffolds regarding the balance between achieving appropriate mechanical strength, ensuring biocompatibility, and optimizing a degradation rate that aligns with bone‐regenerative rate. Considering these challenges, innovative theragenerative platform is developed by utilizing 3D printing‐based nanospikes for the first time. This platform comprises tissue‐specific nanospiked hydroxyapatite decorated with magnesium (nMg) and adhesive DNA (aDNA). The incorporation of nMg within polylactic acid (PLA) matrix confers photothermal capabilities and helps to modulate mechanical and degradation properties and improve the biocompatibility of theragenerative platform. Simultaneously, the immobilized aDNA contributed to the enhancement of vascularized bone healing. These 3D‐printed tissue‐adhesive theragenerative platforms exhibit superior mechanical properties and offer controlled degradability. Moreover, they enable the eradication of bacteria and osteosarcoma through hyperthermia and promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis, both in vitro and in vivo. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy is an effective method for obtaining tissue samples from various organs; however, challenges such as inadequate specimens persist. This study compared a newly designed Tricore needle with a Franseen needle for endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy of porcine liver. Both needles were tested on four male Yorkshire pigs. Specimens were obtained with an 100% (36/36) success rate with no procedure-related adverse effects. The Tricore needle experienced significantly less resistance during puncture than Franseen needle (3.83 vs. 5.97 N, P < 0.001) and better ultrasound visibility (168.97 vs. 125.04, P = 0.004). The Tricore needle also achieved faster specimen acquisition time (48.94 vs. 59.90 s, P = 0.038), larger total specimen area (6.67 vs. 4.68 mm 2 , P = 0.049), fewer fragments (23.94 vs. 31.94, P = 0.190), lager fragment area (0.28 vs. 0.15 mm 2 , P < 0.001), and more the number of complete portal tracts (15.44 vs. 9.33, P = 0.017) compared to the Franseen needle. The newly designed Tricore needle showed enhanced procedural performance and specimen quantity and quality compared to commercially available Franseen needle. This study focuses on the development of nanofiltration (NF) membranes with enhanced antifouling properties, high flux, and low molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) for the separation of lignin from paper mill wastewater. Using a sol-gel method by dip-coating, alumina hollow fiber membranes were fabricated with an interlayer to reduce surface roughness. The interlayer improved mechanical properties, effectively covering the surface irregularities and allowing for the subsequent application of a thinner functional layer. This approach significantly reduced surface roughness, from 112.6 nm to 62.9 nm, enhancing contamination resistance and lifetime. Characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and water contact angle measurements, confirmed the successful fabrication and enhanced properties of the membranes. The C2T6T3 membrane demonstrated the smallest roughness and the highest flux recovery rate (FRR) of 82.39% after cleaning with a 0.1 M NaOH solution. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a local treatment modality for primary liver cancers. Although various input parameters of the RF generator have been adjusted to improve the ablation ranges, the limited ablation ranges remain an obstacle to RFA. This study aimed to compare the ablation ranges and efficacy of sine and square electrical waveforms in a mouse tumor model. An RF generator with an adjustable electrical waveform was developed, and its ablation range in the porcine liver was compared. For all RF parameters, the square electrical waveform ablation range was greater than that of the sine electrical waveform (all p < 0.001) in the porcine liver. The 45 BALB/c nude mice were used to evaluate the efficacy of the two electrical waveforms after the RFA. The mean tumor volume in the square group was significantly lower than that in the sine group ( p < 0.001), indicating a higher survival rate (60%). The cellular coagulative necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, heat shock proteins, cellular necrosis, and tumor necrosis were significantly greater in square electrical waveform than in sine electrical waveform (all; p < 0.05). Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common healthcare-associated infection; however, current therapeutic strategies remain insufficient for standard clinical application. A novel urinary catheter featuring a dual-layer nanoengineering approach using zinc (Zn) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is successfully fabricated. This design targets microbial resistance, minimizes cytotoxicity, and maintains long-term efficacy. The inner AgNPs layer provides immediate antibacterial effects against the UTI pathogens, while the outer porous Zn layer controls zero-order Ag release and generates reactive oxygen species, thus enhancing long-term bactericidal performance. Enhanced antibacterial properties of Zn/AgNPs-coated catheters are observed, resulting in 99.9% of E. coli and 99.7% of S. aureus reduction, respectively. The Zn/AgNPs-coated catheter significantly suppresses biofilm with sludge formation compared to AgNP-coated and uncoated catheters (all, p < 0.05). The Zn/AgNP-coated catheter in a rabbit model demonstrated a durable, effective barrier against bacterial colonization, maintaining antimicrobial properties during the catheter indwelling period with significantly reduced inflammation and epithelial disruption compared with AgNP and uncoated groups. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize the design of antimicrobial medical devices, particularly for applications requiring long-term implantation. Duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR) by thermal ablation of the duodenal mucosa is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure for controlling metabolic syndrome (MS). However, thermal energy can cause adverse effects due to deep mucosal injury, necessitating an additional mucosal lifting process, which complicate the procedures. Therefore, we aimed to develop a similar procedure using non-thermal photodynamic therapy (PDT) for DMR using a highly functional metal stent covered with photosensitizers (PSs) to minimize the potential risks of thermal ablation injury. We developed a novel PS stent enabling the controlled release of radical oxygen species with specific structures to prevent stent migration and duodenal stricture after ablation and performed an animal study (n = 8) to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of PDT for DMR. The stents were placed for 7 days to prevent duodenal strictures after PDT. To confirm PDT efficacy, we stained for gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and glucose transporter isoform 1. The PS stents were deployed, and PDT was applied without evidence of duodenal stricture, pancreatitis, or hemorrhage in any of the pigs. Microscopic evaluation indicated apoptosis of the mucosal cells in the irradiated duodenum on days 7 and 14, which recovered after day 28. Immunohistochemistry revealed suppressed GIP expression in the mucosal wall of the irradiated duodenum. Endoscopic PDT for DMR using PS stents could be applied safely in a porcine model and may result in decreased GIP secretion, which is a crucial mechanism in MS treatment. Spatial light modulators (SLMs) have become an indispensable element in modern optics for their versatile performance in many applications. Among various types of SLMs, such as digital micromirror devices (DMD), liquid crystal-based phase-only spatial light modulators (LC-SLMs), and deformable mirrors (DM), LC-SLMs are often the method of choice due to their high efficiency, precise phase modulation, and abundant number of effective pixels. In general, for research grade applications, an additional SLM calibration step is required due to fabrication imperfection resulting in non-flat liquid crystal panels and varying phase responses over the SLM area. Here, we demonstrate a straightforward approach for reference-free orthogonal calibration of an arbitrary number of SLM subregions which only requires the same measurement time as global calibration. The proposed method requires minimal optical elements and can be applied to any optical setup as is. As a benchmark performance test, we achieved a 2.2-fold enhancement in correction efficiency for wavefront shaping through scattering media utilizing the calibrated 2160 subregions of the SLM, in comparison with a single global look-up table (LUT).
