In our work, serine-modified β-cyclodextrin (Ser-β-CD) was synthesized and a berberine hydrochloride (BBH)/Ser-β-CD inclusion complex (IC) was prepared using the freeze-drying method. Phase solubility studies showed that BBH and Ser-β-CD formed stable inclusion complexes in a stoichiometric ratio of 1 : 1. The IC was characterized using SEM and FT-IR analyses. The results of molecular docking showed that BBH was completely contained in the Ser-β-CD cavity and the binding energy was −7.87 kcal mol−1. The results of in vitro release studies indicated that BBH could be released slowly from the IC. In addition, the prepared Ser-β-CD and IC had good biocompatibility. The IC demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Background: The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is crucial for the structural integrity and dynamics of facial expressions and is a particularly important consideration during facelift surgeries. This study investigated the anatomical structure and continuity of the SMAS at the site where the zygomaticus major (Zmj) originates, which is where the SMAS extends from the lateral to the anterior aspects of the face. Knowledge of these aspects is crucial for understanding the mechanics of facial movements and also the aging process. Methods: Dissections of 66 specimens and histological analyses were used to explore the intricate relationships and attachments between the SMAS and facial muscles. Results: The findings indicated that at the Zmj origin site, the SMAS—connected to the inferior margin of the orbicularis oculi—covered the superficial surface of the Zmj fibers. As it tracked downward, the SMAS was observed to split into two layers lateral to the Zmj fibers, enveloping them both superficially and deeply. Additionally, as the SMAS continued forward, it ceased to be distinctly visible in the buccal area. Conclusions: These results provide a deeper understanding of the complex layering and interconnectivity of the SMAS, which supports facial dynamics and structural integrity. Duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR) by thermal ablation of the duodenal mucosa is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure for controlling metabolic syndrome (MS). However, thermal energy can cause adverse effects due to deep mucosal injury, necessitating an additional mucosal lifting process, which complicate the procedures. Therefore, we aimed to develop a similar procedure using non-thermal photodynamic therapy (PDT) for DMR using a highly functional metal stent covered with photosensitizers (PSs) to minimize the potential risks of thermal ablation injury. We developed a novel PS stent enabling the controlled release of radical oxygen species with specific structures to prevent stent migration and duodenal stricture after ablation and performed an animal study (n = 8) to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of PDT for DMR. The stents were placed for 7 days to prevent duodenal strictures after PDT. To confirm PDT efficacy, we stained for gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and glucose transporter isoform 1. The PS stents were deployed, and PDT was applied without evidence of duodenal stricture, pancreatitis, or hemorrhage in any of the pigs. Microscopic evaluation indicated apoptosis of the mucosal cells in the irradiated duodenum on days 7 and 14, which recovered after day 28. Immunohistochemistry revealed suppressed GIP expression in the mucosal wall of the irradiated duodenum. Endoscopic PDT for DMR using PS stents could be applied safely in a porcine model and may result in decreased GIP secretion, which is a crucial mechanism in MS treatment. The invention of Light Emitting Diode (LED) revolutionized energy-efficient illumination, but concerns persist regarding the potential harm of blue light to our eyes. In this study, we scrutinized the impact of LED light characteristics on eyes using two cell types: M-1 (rich in mitochondria) and CD-1 (neuronal). Variations in color rendering index (CRI) and correlated color temperature (CCT) were investigated, alongside exposure durations ranging from 0 to 24 hours. The findings illuminated the potential benefits of high-quality LED lighting, characterized by a high CRI and low CCT, which emits a greater proportion of red light. This form of lighting was associated with enhanced cell proliferation, elevated ATP levels, and reduced oxidative stress. In contrast, LEDs with low CRI and high CCT exhibited adverse effects, diminishing cell viability and increasing oxidative stress. These results suggest that high-quality LED lighting may have neuroprotective potential as a treatment option, such as for retinal ganglion cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) residues (root and straw) are unique substrates for microbes in paddy soils. Microbial respiration (RH) of paddy soils is likely to be affected by substrate quality. However, no relevant study on the effects of changed rice residue chemistry by climate change on the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of the RH of soils amended with the residues is available. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted an incubation experiment (at 15, 25, and 35 °C) with rice residues of which lignin, nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC), and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) were modified by growing the rice plants under different CO2 and air temperature (Tair). Co-elevated CO2 and Tair decreased lignin and C/N but increased the NSC contents of the residues, leading to the greater RH in the soils amended with rice residues produced under co-elevated CO2 and Tair compared to other CO2 or Tair treatments. However, the Q10 values of the RH of soils amended with rice residues produced under different CO2 and Tair were marginally changed, probably due to other confounding factors such as soil enzyme activity and nutrient availability. Despite that, there was a negative relationship between NSC and Q10 for soils amended with straw of which C/N is lower than root, agreeing with the kinetic theory on "substrate quality–Q10 relationship". Our result suggests that residue chemistry may not affect the Q10 of soils with root residue, but for straw-amended soils, less-recalcitrant NSC rather than more-recalcitrant lignin of straw may be critical in determining the Q10 of the soils. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) has a high mortality rate compared to other infectious diseases. SFTS is particularly associated with a high risk of mortality in immunocompromised individuals, while most patients who die of SFTS exhibit symptoms of severe encephalitis before death. However, the region of brain damage and mechanisms by which the SFTS virus (SFTSV) causes encephalitis remains unknown. Here, we revealed that SFTSV infects the brainstem and spinal cord, which are regions of the brain associated with respiratory function, and motor nerves in IFNAR1‐/‐ mice. Further, we show that A1‐reactive astrocytes are activated, causing nerve cell death, in infected mice. Primary astrocytes of SFTSV‐infected IFNAR1‐/‐ mice also induced neuronal cell death through the activation of A1‐reactive astrocytes. Herein, we showed that SFTSV induces fatal neuroinflammation in the brain regions important for respiratory function and motor nerve, which may underlie mortality in SFTS patients. The study "Spaces of the Face for Filler Procedures: Identification of subSMAS Spaces Based on Anatomical Study" explores the anatomy of facial spaces crucial for safe and effective filler injections. By delineating the subSMAS (sub-superficial musculoaponeurotic system) spaces, this research highlights how these virtual compartments, bordered by fat, muscles, fascia, and ligaments, facilitate independent muscle movement and reduce the risk of damaging critical structures. The thicker and more robust skin of East Asians necessitates deeper filler injections, emphasizing the significance of accurately identifying these spaces. A cadaver study with dyed gelatin validated the existence and characteristics of these subSMAS spaces, confirming their safety for filler procedures. Key spaces, such as the subgalea-frontalis, interfascial and temporalis, and prezygomatic spaces, were examined, illustrating safe zones for injections. The findings underscore the importance of anatomical knowledge for enhancing facial aesthetics while minimizing complications. This study serves as a guide for clinicians to perform precise and safe filler injections, providing a foundation for further research on the dynamic interactions of these spaces and long-term outcomes. Introduction: Inadvertent entry of filler products into the supratrochlear, supraorbital, or dorsal nasal arteries, among other branches of the ophthalmic artery, might result in an immediate and devastating loss of vision. We wanted to examine how much filler could block the ophthalmic artery. Materials and Methods: Twenty‐nine fresh cadavers were examined. We exposed the arterial supply to the opthalmic artery by dissecting the orbital area. Thereafter, 17 filler injections were introduced into the supratrochlear, supraorbital, and dorsal nasal arteries each. The amount of filler injection that completely blocked the ophthalmic artery was measured. Additionally, one of the head specimens was processed using phosphotungstic acid‐based contrast enhancement micro‐computed tomography to analyze each arteries to obstruct its whole ophthalmic artery. Results: The supratrochlear, supraorbital, and dorsal nasal arteries had mean volumes in milliliter (mean ± standard deviation) of 0.0397 ± 0.010 mL, 0.0409 ± 0.00932 mL, and 0.0368 ± 0.00732 mL, respectively. However, the arteries did not differ significantly. Conclusion: Even a modest amount of filler injection can completely block the ophthalmic artery, resulting in visual loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We prioritized injury prevention and management programs, and research and development (R&D) projects using the Delphi method and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for national plan. We summarized 21 programs and 31 R&D projects based on opinions collected in the opinion survey and brainstorming. Expert panel evaluated program and project relevance in the two Delphi rounds to make consensus. Total scores were calculated by adding criterion weights calculated through the AHP multiplied by the average of scores for each program and project. The top three programs were "Integrated Management System for Injury Data," "Comprehensive Injury Surveillance System," and "Transport System Improvement Program for Major Trauma." The top three R&D projects were researches on "Identification of Vulnerable Workers Injuries to Strengthen Protections," "Data Integration on Injury and Disability," and "Using Public Health Big Data to Identify Injury Status and Risk Factors." Background: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is prevalent among octogenarians, causing significant pain and disability. Surgical intervention is often required because of the ineffectiveness of conservative treatments. This study investigates the efficacy and safety of biportal endoscopic decompressive laminectomy (BED) in octogenarians with severe LSS, evaluating its potential as a minimally invasive surgical option., Methods: This retrospective study included 107 patients aged 80 years or older who underwent BED for LSS between March 2017 and December 2022. Data were collected from electronic medical records, including demographic information, clinical outcomes, and surgical details. Patients with fractures, infectious spondylitis, herniated discs, and follow-up less than 12 months were excluded. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the visual analog scale, Oswestry Disability Index, European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions, and painDETECT at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery., Results: The mean age of the 107 patients was 84.1 years, with 59% being women. Significant improvements were observed in visual analog scale scores for lower back and lower extremities pain, Oswestry Disability Index, European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions, and painDETECT scores, indicating reduced pain, decreased disability, and enhanced quality of life. There were no significant differences in outcomes between patients aged 80 to 84 and those 85 or older. Surgery-related outcomes such as operation time, blood loss, and complications were similar in both age groups., Conclusions: BED is a safe and effective treatment for LSS in octogenarians, providing significant pain relief and functional improvement. Background: Biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (BE-TLIF) is a minimally invasive surgical technique for treating degenerative lumbar spine conditions. It offers advantages such as reduced soft tissue trauma and lower infection rates, but certain technical aspects may be challenging. The current study aims to identify strategies to enhance the fusion rate in BE-TLIF by addressing these specific challenges., Methods: A literature review was conducted on techniques to improve fusion rates in BE-TLIF., Results: The review suggests that lateral-based portals supplemented with medial portals allowed for safe insertion of interbody cages with large footprint. Direct visualization of the disc space with a 30° endoscope assisted with better disc space preparation. Facetectomies performed with osteotomes, rather than burrs, ensured maximum retrieval of autologous bone graft. Utilizing bone morphogenetic proteins with sustained release carriers such as hydroxyapatite can be useful to increase fusion rates of BE-TLIF., Conclusions: To our knowledge, the current literature is the first comprehensive review of strategies to enhance fusion rates in BE-TLIF. The proposed techniques and biological adjuncts are effective means to address key challenges associated with the procedure, and such strategies would potentially shorten the learning curve and improve clinical outcomes.
