- Abstract
Synthetic polymers are used in the manufacture of orthopaedic technical devices. Polypropylene and polyethylene are the most commonly used, which have good physical and mechanical properties but pose a significant threat to the environment and are very difficult to recycle and dispose of. A number of biodegradable thermoplastics are now being produced worldwide and could be used as an alternative to non-organic materials used in orthopaedic technology. This study reviews the use of biodegradable polymers in the manufacture of orthopaedic devices. The diversity, perspectives and potential of existing thermoplastics are analysed through an analysis of the scientific literature. A review of existing materials used in orthopaedic devices has shown that they are very harmful to the environment and should be replaced by biodegradable materials, therefore reducing environmental pollution. A review of the use of polylactide (PLA) in orthopaedic technology has shown that it can be used in a variety of ways, such as additive manufacturing (3D printing), the "sandwich" principle using a vacuum press, and in the production of customised shoe insoles.
