In a context of global changes, a foresight study is helpful to look into the future, anticipate possible scenarios and take appropriate decisions to face emerging risks for food and feed safety. Considering that an increased use of the ocean is expected for the next decades, it is essential to explore its possible impact on the safety of food and feed from the oceans. A scoping study was carried out to analyse drivers of change that may impact/promote the future uses of the ocean and its resources. From bibliographic search, different ocean uses were identified: coastal and open‐sea mining, marine aquaculture, sea transport and trade, energy production and related infrastructures, fisheries, ocean crops, saline farming, desalination, extraction of bioresources, marine protected areas and conservation of the ocean. Through the information gathered in the scoping study and the input of several experts, three key ocean uses were prioritised to proceed to a participatory foresight exercise: (i) coastal and open‐sea mining; (ii) marine aquaculture; and (iii) sea transport and trade. The foresight exercise produced three possible scenarios for 2050 for each prioritised use of the ocean. On the basis of these scenarios, possible implications and potential emerging issues for the safety of food and feed from the oceans were identified and characterised through bibliographic data. This document also provides a description of the methodology followed in the scoping study and in the foresight exercise, and recommendations that could help EFSA to prepare to the challenges posed by the future exploitation of ocean resources. Fish by-products can be converted into high-value-added products like fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs), which have high nutritional value and are rich in bioactive peptides with health benefits. This study aims to characterise FPHs derived from salmon heads (HPSs) and Cape hake trimmings (HPHs) using Alcalase for enzymatic hydrolysis and Subcritical Water Hydrolysis (SWH) as an alternative method. All hydrolysates demonstrated high protein content (70.4–88.7%), with the degree of hydrolysis (DH) ranging from 10.7 to 36.4%. The peptide profile of FPHs indicated the breakdown of proteins into small peptides. HPSs showed higher levels of glycine and proline, while HPHs had higher concentrations of glutamic acid, leucine, threonine, and phenylalanine. Similar elemental profiles were observed in both HPHs and HPSs, and the levels of Cd, Pb, and Hg were well below the legislated limits. Hydrolysates do not have a negative effect on cell metabolism and contribute to cell growth. HPSs and HPHs exhibited high 2,2′–azino-bis(3 ethylbenzthiazoline-6)-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, Cu2+ and Fe2+ chelating activities, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, with HPHs generally displaying higher activities. The α-amylase inhibition of both FPHs was relatively low. These results indicate that HPHs are a promising natural source of nutritional compounds and bioactive peptides, making them potential candidates for use as an ingredient in new food products or nutraceuticals. SWH at 250 °C is a viable alternative to enzymatic methods for producing FPHs from salmon heads with high antioxidant and chelating properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Including social and environmental concerns in decision-making processes and business operations is essential for organizations. Management control systems are crucial in integrating sustainability issues into decision-making processes. Thus, this study aims to analyze international publications about the relationship between management control systems and sustainability, identifying trends in evolution and future research opportunities. Based on bibliometric techniques, the outputs obtained in the Web of Science (n = 139) and Scopus (n = 73) databases were analyzed in the bibliometrix R package to map and systematically review the literature. After removing duplicates, we obtained a final output of 157 articles. The analysis of these publications draws attention to the relevance and emergence of these topics in academic and business circles and concludes that this area of knowledge has gained relevance in the last five years of research. The originality of this study lies in its ability to offer valuable insights that can shape future research agendas. By focusing specifically on how management control systems support or hinder sustainability initiatives, the study fills a gap in existing literature, which often treats these subjects separately. Future research can focus on the challenges of integrating sustainability into accounting frameworks and the role of technology in accounting for sustainability. The continuous study of these topics is essential to enable professionals and organizations to face contemporary challenges, ensure ethics and transparency, promote sustainability and responsibility, and ensure long-term success in a world increasingly aware of environmental and social issues. Aims/Objectives: According to Multilink, words from the first (L1) and (L2) second languages share a common store and their access is non-selective. Thus, the presentation of a target word activates in parallel lexical candidates from both languages that share form and semantic overlap. The degree of words' activation also depends on their resting levels of activation (words that are more used have a higher resting levels of activation). Since non-cognate translations and synonyms share meaning, they may be seen as qualitatively similar lexical representations, and consequently subject to similar processing if their frequency levels are matched. However, whereas masked priming lexical decision studies with synonyms failed to find reliable masked priming effects, the majority of those with non-cognate translations (especially in the forward direction, i.e., from L1 to L2) showed significant effects. The present study extends those findings by directly comparing the processing of synonyms and translations in bilinguals. Design/methodology: A masked priming lexical decision task (targets were preceded by a related 50-ms word [an L1 translation or an L2 synonym] or by a 50-ms unrelated word) was conducted. Lexical frequency of usage was higher for primes than for targets. Data and analysis: Reaction times and accuracy from 24 sequential (highly proficient) European Portuguese-English bilinguals were analyzed with linear mixed effects models. Findings/conclusions: Results showed priming effects for translations, but not for synonyms, indicating a differential processing of synonyms and non-cognate translations. Originality: This is the first empirical work that directly compares the processing of synonyms and translations in bilinguals by using the same targets words for both prime types. Significance/implications: The findings contradict the Multilink model, since they index a differential representational nature of lexico-semantic links for translations and synonyms. Olive anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum fungi, and the olive fruit fly Bactrocera olea are, respectively, the most important fungal disease and pest affecting olive fruits worldwide, leading to detrimental effects on the yield and quality of fruits and olive oil. This study focuses on the content of hydroxytyrosol (HYT) and its derivatives (the "olive oil polyphenols" health claim) in olive oils extracted from fruits of 'Galega Vulgar' and 'Cobrançosa' cultivars, naturally affected by olive anthracnose and olive fly. The olives, with different damage levels, were harvested from organic rainfed orchards, located in the center of Portugal, at four harvest times over three years. Galega oils extracted from olives with a higher anthracnose and olive fly incidence showed no conformity for the extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and virgin olive oil (VOO) categories, presenting high acidity and negative sensory notes accompanied by the disappearance of oleacein. Conversely, no sensory defects were observed in Cobrançosa oils, regardless of disease and pest incidence levels, and quality criteria were still in accordance with the EVOO category. The total HYT and tyrosol (TYR) content (>5 mg/20 g) allows for the use of the "olive oil polyphenols" health claim on the label of all the analyzed Cobrançosa olive oils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, hybrid materials within the polydimethylsiloxane–silica (PDMS–SiO2) system, synthesized via the sol–gel method, were developed and characterized for their potential to incorporate and release the bioactive compound resveratrol (RES). RES was incorporated into the materials with a high loading efficiency (>75%) using the rotary evaporator technique. This incorporation induced the amorphization of RES, resulting in enhanced solubility and in vitro release when compared to the free polyphenolic compound. The release profiles displayed pH dependence, exhibiting notably faster release at pH 5.2 compared to pH 7.4. The gradual release of RES over time demonstrated an initial time lag of approximately 4 h, being well described by the Weibull model. In vitro cytotoxicity studies were conducted on human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63), revealing a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability for RES-loaded samples (for concentrations >50 µg mL−1). Telangiectatic osteosarcoma is a rare variant of osteosarcoma histologically and clinically similar to hemangiosarcoma (HSA). This case series describes the imaging and cytologic features of four histologically confirmed telangiectatic osteosarcomas, including the use of cytochemical stains. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was applied to Wright–Giemsa‐stained cytology slides, and Factor VIII immunohistochemistry was evaluated. Cytologic characteristics included atypical mesenchymal cells with evidence of acute and chronic hemorrhage. Telangiectatic osteosarcoma cases had positive ALP cytochemical staining, while control HSA cases were negative. Factor VIII immunohistochemistry was negative in telangiectatic osteosarcoma and positive in HSA. Cytologic diagnosis of telangiectatic osteosarcoma with positive ALP cytochemical staining can help differentiate this neoplasm from HSA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main goal of the present survey was to elaborate, characterize and evaluate the efficiency of ferrite-based nanoparticles modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as potential magnetic nanoadsorbents to remove Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) from water. It is proposed an innovative nanomaterial architecture based on highly magnetic and chemically stable core@shell nanoparticles covered by an adsorptive surface layer of CTAB (CoFe2O4@γ-Fe2O3@CTAB). Samples of two different mean sizes (7.5 and 14.6 nm) were synthesized using a hydrothermal coprecipitation followed by surface treatment and functionalization. Batch tests were performed to evaluate the influence of contact time, temperature, pH, shaking rate, presence of interferents and mean size on the performance of the proposed nanomaterials. The kinetics of the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model with an equilibrium time of 20 min. The adsorption capacity was estimated by the Langmuir isotherm model and was found to be 56.3 mg/g (smaller size) and 45.6 mg/g (larger size) at pH = 3 and a shaking rate of 400 rpm. The process was spontaneous, exothermic, and showed increased randomness. Sulphate ions negatively impacted the removal of RBBR. The best performance of the nanoadsorbent based on smaller mean sizes can be correlated to its larger surface area. Regeneration and readsorption tests showed that the nanoadsorbents retain more than 80% of their original removal capacity, therefore they can be effectively recycled and reused. Introduction: Anaerobic digestion integrates waste treatment, energy generation, and nutrient recycling, producing methane mainly through acetoclastic (AM) and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis (HM). Methanogenic pathway management can improve biogas productivity and quality. The balance between pathways is influenced by environmental and physicochemical conditions, with conflicting results on the effect of different factors often reported. This systematic review aims to clarify the influence of various parameters on methanogenic pathways in anaerobic digesters., Methods: Literature search was conducted in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The effects of different parameters on the predominant methanogenic pathway were evaluated using Kruskal-Wallis tests and Spearman's rank correlation., Results: Thermophilic temperatures and high free ammonia nitrogen concentrations (>300 mg L -1 ) increase HM, with a strong combined effect of these variables. Conversely, under moderate temperature and ammonia concentrations, the primary feedstock influences the methanogenic pathway, with algae biomass, pig manure, and food industry wastewater showing the lowest contribution of hydrogenotrophic methanogens. pH effect varied with temperature, with acidic and alkaline pH favoring HM in mesophilic and thermophilic digesters, respectively. Furthermore, higher levels of volatile fatty acids (>2000 mg L -1 ), carbohydrates (>10 g/L) and lipids (>10 g/L) also appeared to favor HM over AM, while most metals - especially Cr, Se and W - promoted AM., Conclusion: This study emphasizes the role of various factors in methanogenic pathway selection, highlighting the impact of previously overlooked parameters, such as inorganic elements and organic matter composition. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disorder which may affect the gastrointestinal system. Half of the patients with SLE experience gastrointestinal symptoms, with the most common being nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and abdominal pain. Mesenteric vasculitis is a severe and rare complication of SLE and one of the most frequent causes of severe acute abdominal pain. The authors present a case of a 57-year-old woman with SLE who was diagnosed with necrotizing mesenteric vasculitis following a urinary septic shock. The patient was treated with high-dose corticosteroid therapy and cyclophosphamide, with resolution of the clinical picture.
