Abstract

We report on the development of thermal detectors based on large-size tellurium dioxide crystals (45x45x45 mm), containing tellurium enriched in $^{130}$Te to about 91%, for the CROSS double-beta decay experiment. A powder used for the crystals growth was additionally purified by the directional solidification method, resulting in the reduction of the concentration of impurities by a factor 10, to a few ppm of the total concentration of residual elements (the main impurity is Fe). The purest part of the ingot (the first ~200 mm, about 80% of the total length of the cylindrical part of the ingot) was determined by scanning segregation profiles of impurities and used for the $^{130}$TeO$_2$ powder production with no evidence of re-contamination. The crystal growth was verified with precursors produced from powder with natural Te isotopic composition, and two small-size (20x20x10 mm) samples were tested at a sea-level laboratory showing high bolometric and spectrometric performance together with acceptable $^{210}$Po content (below 10 mBq/kg). This growth method was then applied for the production of six large cubic $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals and 4 of them were taken randomly to be characterized at the Canfranc underground laboratory, in the CROSS-dedicated low-background cryogenic facility. Two $^{130}$TeO$_2$ samples were coated with a thin, $O$(100 nm), metal film in form of Al layer (on 4 sides) or AlPd grid (on a single side) to investigate the possibility to tag surface events by pulse-shape discrimination. Similarly to the small natural precursors, large-volume $^{130}$TeO$_2$ bolometers show high performance and even better internal purity ($^{210}$Po activity $\sim$ 1 mBq/kg, while activities of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra are below 0.01 mBq/kg), satisfying requirements for the CROSS and, potentially, next-generation experiments., Comment: Submitted to JINST; 22 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. Abstract

An experiment to study double-beta decay (DBD) processes in 94,96Zr using two Cs2ZrCl6 (CZC) crystal scintillators (11 g and 24 g) has been performed deep underground in the DAMA/CRYS setup at LNGS. These crystals have been studied in terms of chemical purity and internal radioactive contamination, scintillation and PSD performances. Their high radiopurity was confirmed by low-background measurements over 456.5 d which resulted in a counting rate of 0.17 (kg·keV·y) −1 at the Q2β value of 96Zr. Limits on different DBD modes of 94,96Zr were set at the level T1/2 ~ 1017 − 1020 y (90% C.L.). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. HCV testing and linkage to care for hepatitis C virus infection for marginalized drug user populations attending a harm reduction service in Bologna, Italy.

Abstract

Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of HCV in a highly vulnerable population of substance users living with social difficulties and marginality who came into contact with the mobile harm reduction service in the city of Bologna (Northern Italy). Testing was offered in a van (mobile unit) by using a point-of-care HCV antibody test. For the HCV RNA test, the Xpert HCV Viral Load Fingerstick Test was used. Participants with a detectable HCV RNA were accompanied within two weeks to the Infectious Diseases Department Sant' Orsola Hospital Bologna to start HCV treatment. With regard to the main study findings, 54% reported having never been HCV tested before; a prevalence of HCV RNA of 6% among all participants and 22% among those injecting drugs was found; among the HCV RNA positive participants, 80% were accompanied to treatment. Our study suggests that mobile harm reduction services, in networks with healthcare facilities, are able to offer a continuous HCV screening service and linkage to care for people with drug use living in socially marginalized conditions., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: The authors declares that they have no conflicts of interest.
