Membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is challenged by biofilm thickness control and phosphorus removal. Air scouring aided by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to detach outer biofilm in sequencing batch MABR treating low C/N wastewater. Biofilm with 177-285 µm thickness in cycle 5-15 achieved over 85 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removals at loading rate of 13.2 gCOD/m 2 /d and 2.64 gNH 4 + -N/m 2 /d. Biofilm rheology measurements in cycle 10-25 showed yield stress against detachment of 2.8-7.4 Pa, which were equal to CFD calculated shear stresses under air scouring flowrate of 3-9 L/min. Air scouring reduced effluent NH 4 + -N by 10 % and biofilm thickness by 78 µm. Producing medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS) is crucial for sustainable chemical industries. This study addressed the electron donor requirement for MCFAs production by inoculating Lactobacillus at varying concentrations (7.94 × 10 10 , 3.18 × 10 11 , and 6.35 × 10 11  cell/L) to supply lactate internally. Interestingly, the highest MCFAs yield (∼2000 mg COD/L) occurred at the lowest Lactobacillus inoculation. Higher inoculation concentrations redirected more carbon from WAS towards alcohols production rather than MCFAs generation, with up to 2852 mg COD/L alcohols obtained under 6.35 × 10 11  cell/L inoculation. Clostridium dominance and increased genes abundance for substrate hydrolysis, lactate conversion, and MCFAs/alcohol production collectively enhanced WAS-derived MCFAs and alcohols synthesis after Lactobacillus inoculation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) present in aquatic environments can significantly influence microalgal metabolism and the enrichment of heavy metals. However, the specific mechanism through which typical DOM affects the enrichment of the heavy metal chromium (Cr) in green algae remains unclear. This study investigates the impacts of varying concentrations of humic acid (HA), selected as a representative DOM in water, on the growth, metabolism, and Cr enrichment in Chlorella vulgaris, a typical green alga. The results indicated that low concentrations of HA were capable of enhancing Cr enrichment in C. vulgaris, with the highest Cr enrichment rate recorded at 41.50 % at TOC = 10 mg/L. The enrichment of Cr in algal cells primarily occurred through cell proliferation and complexation reduction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In the presence of HA, C. vulgaris predominantly removed Cr through extracellular adsorption, accounting for 79.76-85.88 % of the total Cr removal. Furthermore, carboxyl complexation and hydroxyl reduction within EPS facilitated both the enrichment of Cr (18.72-21.49 %) and the reduction of Cr(VI) (63.93-74.10 %). Rice cultivation boasts a rich historical legacy, serving as the primary sustenance for over 50% of the global population. However, the cultivation process gives rise to the emission of methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O), two potent greenhouse gases. Notably, the global warming potential (GWP) of CH 4 and N 2 O surpasses CO 2 by 27-30 times and 273 times over 100 years, respectively. Addressing this environmental challenge necessitates exploring technical approaches and management strategies to curb gas emissions while sustaining rice yields. Several critical factors have been identified and analyzed for their potential to mitigate greenhouse gas production during rice cultivation. These include water management, fertilizer management, biochar application, cultivar selection, straw management, modified planting methods, and integration of new energy machinery. A comprehensive understanding and implementation of these methods can contribute significantly to achieving a dual objective: reducing emissions and maintaining optimal rice yields. Looking ahead, a synergistic integration of these diverse methods and management approaches holds promise for more effective results. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), known for their low energy consumption, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness, have been widely utilized for removing antibiotics from wastewater. Compared to conventional wastewater treatment methods, MFCs produce less sludge while exhibiting superior antibiotic removal capacity, effectively reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigates 1) the mechanisms of ARGs generation and proliferation in MFCs; 2) the influencing factors on the fate and removal of antibiotics and ARGs; and 3) the fate and mitigation of ARGs in MFC and MFC-coupled systems. It is indicated that high removal efficiency of antibiotics and minimal amount of sludge production contribute the mitigation of ARGs in MFCs. Influencing factors, such as cathode potential, electrode materials, salinity, initial antibiotic concentration, and additional additives, can lead to the selection of tolerant microbial communities, thereby affecting the abundance of ARGs carried by various microbial hosts. Integrating MFCs with other wastewater treatment systems can synergistically enhance their performance, thereby improving the overall removal efficiency of ARGs. For the first time, a hyper-thermophilic aerobic (>60 °C) bioreactor has been integrated with direct submerged membrane distillation (MD), highlighting its potential as an advanced wastewater treatment solution. The hyper-thermophilic aerobic bioreactor, operating up to 65 °C, is tailored for high organic removal, while MD efficiently produces clean water. Throughout the study, high removal rates of 99.5% for organic matter, 96.4% for ammonia, and 100% for phosphorus underscored the impressive adaptability of microorganisms to challenging hyper-thermophilic conditions and a successful combination with the MD process. Despite the extreme temperatures and substantial salinity accumulation reaching up to 12,532 μS/cm, the biomass of microorganisms increased by 1.6 times over a 92-day period, representing their remarkable resilience. The distillation flux ranged from 6.15 LMH to 8.25 LMH, benefiting from the temperature gradient in the hyper-thermophilic setting and the design of the tubular submerged MD membrane module. The system also excels in pH control, utilizing fewer alkali and nutritional resources than conventional systems. Numerous antibiotics are being released into the natural environment through wastewater. As antibiotic usage increases annually, its detrimental impact on the environment is escalating. Addressing environmental sustainability and human health requires significant attention towards antibiotic removal. In recent years, magnetic biochar (MBC) has gained widespread application in water treatment due to its exceptional adsorption and catalytic degradation capabilities. Antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and others commonly exhibit an adsorption capacity by MBC ranging from 5 mg/g to 900 mg/g. Moreover, MBC typically removes over 90% of these antibiotics within 60 min. The effectiveness of antibiotic removal is significantly influenced by various preparation and modification methods. Furthermore, the incorporation of magnetism enables the material to be recycled and reused multiple times, thereby reducing consumption costs. This article discusses recent studies on antibiotic removal using MBC. It has been observed that variations in the selection of raw material and preparation procedures significantly affect antibiotic removal, while the mechanisms involved in antibiotic removal remain ambiguous. Additionally, it has been noted that the removal process may lead to secondary pollution and high preparation costs. Therefore, this review comprehensively outlines the utilization of MBC in the removal of antibiotics from wastewater, including aspects such as modification, preparation, removal mechanism, and factors influencing removal, and providing recommendations for antibiotic development. This review article explores the challenges associated with landfill leachate resulting from the increasing disposal of municipal solid waste in landfills and open areas. The composition of landfill leachate includes antibiotics (0.001-100 μg), heavy metals (0.001-1.4 g/L), dissolved organic and inorganic components, and xenobiotics including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (10-25 μg/L). Conventional treatment methods, such as biological (microbial and phytoremediation) and physicochemical (electrochemical and membrane-based) techniques, are available but face limitations in terms of cost, accuracy, and environmental risks. To surmount these challenges, this study advocates for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to strengthen treatment efficacy through predictive analytics and optimized operational parameters. It critically evaluates the risks posed by recalcitrant leachate components and appraises the performance of various treatment modalities, both independently and in tandem with biological and physicochemical processes. Notably, physicochemical treatments have demonstrated pollutant removal rates of up to 90% for various contaminants, while integrated biological approaches have achieved over 95% removal efficiency. However, the heterogeneous nature of solid waste composition further complicates treatment methodologies. Consequently, the integration of advanced ML algorithms such as Support Vector Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, and Genetic Algorithms is proposed to refine leachate treatment processes. This review provides valuable insights for different stakeholders specifically researchers, policymakers and practitioners, seeking to fortify waste disposal infrastructure and foster sustainable landfill leachate management practices. In recent years, biofuel production has attracted considerable attention, especially given the increasing worldwide demand for energy and emissions of greenhouse gases that threaten this planet. In this case, one possible solution is to convert biomass into green and sustainable biofuel, which can enhance the bioeconomy and contribute to sustainable economic development goals. Due to being in large quantities and containing high organic content, various biomass sources such as food waste, textile waste, microalgal waste, agricultural waste and sewage sludge have gained significant attention for biofuel production. Also, biofuel production technologies, including thermochemical processing, anaerobic digestion, fermentation and bioelectrochemical systems, have been extensively reported, which can achieve waste valorization through producing biofuels and re-utilizing wastes. Nevertheless, the commercial feasibility of biofuel production is still being determined, and it is unclear whether biofuel can compete equally with other existing fuels in the market. The concept of a circular economy in biofuel production can promote the environmentally friendly and sustainable valorization of biomass waste. This review comprehensively discusses the state-of-the-art production of biofuel from various biomass sources and the bioeconomy perspectives associated with it. Biofuel production is evaluated within the framework of the bioeconomy. Further perspectives on possible integration approaches to maximizing waste utilization for biofuel production are discussed, and what this could mean for the circular economy. Biochar has emerged as a versatile and efficient multi-functional material, serving as both an adsorbent and catalyst in removing emerging pollutants (EPs) from aquatic matrices. However, pristine biochar's catalytic and adsorption capabilities are hindered by its poor surface functionality and small pore size. Objective: To systematically review Medicaid policies state-by-state for gender-affirming surgery coverage., Data Sources and Study Setting: Primary data were collected for each US state utilizing the LexisNexis legal database, state legislature publications, and Medicaid manuals., Study Design: A cross-sectional study evaluating Medicaid coverage for numerous gender-affirming surgeries., Data Collection/extraction Methods: We previously reported on state health policies that protect gender-affirming care under Medicaid coverage. Building upon our prior work, we systematically assessed the 27 states with protective policies to determine coverage for each type of gender-affirming surgery. We analyzed Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries in four domains: chest, genital, craniofacial and neck reconstruction, and miscellaneous procedures. Medicaid coverage for each type of surgery was categorized as explicitly covered, explicitly noncovered, or not described., Principal Findings: Among the 27 states with protective Medicaid policies, 17 states (63.0%) provided explicit coverage for at least one gender-affirming chest procedure and at least one gender-affirming genital procedure, while only eight states (29.6%) provided explicit coverage for at least one craniofacial and neck procedure (p = 0.04). Coverage for specific surgical procedures within these three anatomical domains varied. The most common explicitly covered procedures were breast reduction/mastectomy and hysterectomy (n = 17, 63.0%). The most common explicitly noncovered surgery was reversal surgery (n = 12, 44.4%). Several states did not describe the specific surgical procedures covered; thus, final coverage rates are indeterminate., Conclusions: In 2022, 52.9% of states had health policies that protected gender-affirming care under Medicaid; however, coverage for various gender-affirming surgical procedures remains both variable and occasionally unspecified. Ammonium removal by a symbiosis system of algae (Chlorella vulgaris) and nitrifying bacteria was evaluated in a long-term photo-sequencing batch reactor under varying influent inorganic carbon (IC) concentrations (15, 10, 5 and 2.5 mmol L -1 ) and different nitrogen loading rate (NLR) conditions (270 and 540 mg-N L -1 d -1 ). The IC/N ratios provided were 2.33, 1.56, 0.78 and 0.39, respectively, for an influent NH 4 + -N concentration of 90 mg-N L -1 (6.43 mmol L -1 ). The results confirmed that both ammonium removal and N 2 O production were positively related with IC concentration. Satisfactory ammonium removal efficiencies (>98 %) and rates (29-34 mg-N gVSS -1  h -1 ) were achieved regardless of NLR levels under sufficient IC of 10 and 15 mmol L -1 , while insufficient IC at 2.5 mmol L -1 led to the lowest ammonium removal rates of 0 mg-N gVSS -1  h -1 . The ammonia oxidation process by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) played a predominant role over the algae assimilation process in ammonium removal. Long-time IC deficiency also resulted in the decrease in biomass and pigments of algae and nitrifying bacteria. IC limitation led to the decreasing N 2 O production, probably due to its negative effect on ammonia oxidation by AOB. The optimal IC concentration was determined to be 10 mmol L -1 (i.e., IC/N of 1.56, alkalinity of 500 mg CaCO 3 L -1 ) in the algae-bacteria symbiosis reactor, corresponding to higher ammonia oxidation rate of ∼41 mg-N gVSS -1  h -1 and lower N 2 O emission factor of 0.13 %. At present, the application of sewage treatment technologies is restricted by high sulfate concentrations. In the present work, the sulfate removal was biologically treated using an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) in the absence/presence of light. First, the start-up of UASB for the sulfate removal was studied in terms of COD degradation, sulfate removal, and effluent pH. Second, the impacts of different operation parameters (i.e., COD/SO 4 2- ratio, temperature and illumination time) on the UASB performance were explored. Third, the properties of sludge derived from the UASB at different time were analyzed. Results show that after 28 days of start-up, the COD removal efficiencies in both the photoreactor and non-photoreactor could reach a range of 85-90% while such reactors could achieve > 90% of sulfate being removed. Besides, higher illumination time could facilitate the removal of pollutants in the photoreactor. Slow dissolution/hydrolysis of insoluble/macromolecular organics and poor sludge filterability restrict the application potential of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Bubble-free membrane microaeration was firstly proposed to overcome these obstacles in this study. The batch anaerobic digestion tests feeding insoluble starch and soluble peptone with and without microaeration showed that microaeration led to a 65.7-144.8% increase in methane production and increased critical flux of microfiltration membrane via driving the formation of large sludge flocs and the resultant improvement of sludge settleability. The metagenomic and bioinformatic analyses showed that microaeration significantly enriched the functional genes and bacteria for polysaccharide and protein hydrolysis, microaeration showed little negative effects on the functional genes involved in anaerobic metabolisms, and substrate transfer from starch to peptone significantly affected the functional genes and microbial community. In lightly polluted water containing heavy metals, organic matter, and green microalgae, the molecular weight of organic matter may influence both the growth of green microalgae and the concentration of heavy metals. This study elucidates the effects and mechanisms by which different molecular weight fractions of fulvic acid (FA), a model dissolved organic matter component, facilitate the bioaccumulation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in a typical green alga, Chlorella vulgaris. Findings show that the addition of FA fractions with molecular weights greater than 10 kDa significantly enhances the enrichment of total chromium and Cr(VI) in algal cells, reaching 21.58%-31.09 % and 16.17 %-22.63 %, respectively. Conversely, the efficiency of chromium enrichment in algal cells was found to decrease with decreasing molecular weight of FA. FA molecular weight within the range of 0.22 µm-30 kDa facilitated chromium enrichment primarily through the algal organic matter (AOM) pathway, with minor contributions from the algal cell proliferation and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) pathways. However, with decreasing FA molecular weight, the AOM and EPS pathways become less prominent, whereas the algal cell proliferation pathway becomes dominant. Establishing an economic and sustained Fenton oxidation system to enhance sludge dewaterability and carbamazepine (CBZ) removal rate is a crucial path to simultaneously achieve sludge reduction and harmless. Leveraging the principles akin to "tea making", we harnessed tea waste to continually release tea polyphenols (TP), thus effectively maintaining high level of oxidation efficiency through the sustained Fenton reaction. The results illustrated that the incorporation of tea waste yielded more favorable outcomes in terms of water content reduction and CBZ removal compared to direct TP addition within the Fe(III)/hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) system. Concomitantly, this process mainly generated hydroxyl radical (•OH) via three oxidation pathways, effectively altering the properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and promoting the degradation of CBZ from the sludge mixture. The interval addition of Fe(III) and H 2 O 2 heightened extracellular oxidation efficacy, promoting the desorption and removal of CBZ. The degradation of EPS prompted the transformation of bound water to free water, while the formation of larger channels drove the discharge of water. Fe(VI), as a new green treatment agent, has two indispensable processes in water treatment: coagulation and oxidation. Fe(VI) has a strong oxidation ability. The intermediate iron species (Fe(V) and Fe(IV)) and reactive radical species (H 2 O 2 , •OH, and O 2 •-) produced by decomposition and reduction reaction have strong oxidation ability, in addition, the hydrolyzed product formed in situ with core (γ-Fe 2 O 3 )-shell (γ-FeOOH) structure also has good coagulation effect. Because Fe(VI) is easy to decompose and challenging to preserve, it limits the application and sometimes significantly reduces the subsequent processing effect. How to make Fe(VI) more efficient use is a hot spot in current research. The co-transport behavior of environmental pollutants with biochar particles has aroused great interests from researchers due to the concerns about pollutant diffusion and environmental exposure after biochar is applied to soil. In this work, the recovery and co-transport behavior of biochar micron-/nano-particles (BCMP and BCNP) and lead (Pb 2+ ) in saturated porous media were investigated under different ionic strength conditions (IS = 1, 5 and 10 mM) under a direct current electric field. The results showed that the electric field could significantly enhance the mobility of Pb adsorbed biochar particles, particularly BCNP. The recovery of Pb laden biochar particles was improved by 1.8 folds, reaching 78.8% at maximum under favorable condition at +0.5 V cm -1 . According to the CDE (Convection-Dispersion-Equation) model and DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory analysis, the electric field facilitated the transport of Pb carried biochar mainly by increasing the negative charges on biochar surface and improving the repulsive force between biochar and porous media. High IS was favorable for biochar transport under the electric field, but inhibited desorbing Pb 2+ from biochar (18% by maximum at IS = 10 mM). By switching the electric field power, a two-stage strategy was established to maximize the recovery of both biochar particles and Pb, where BCNP and Pb recovery were higher than electric field free case by 90% and 35%, respectively. Here, Baijiu distillers' grains (BDGs) were employed in biorefinery development to generate value-added co-products and bioethanol. Through ethyl acetate extraction at a 1:6 solid-liquid ratio for 10 h, significant results were achieved, including 100 % lactic acid and 92 % phenolics recovery. The remaining BDGs also achieved 99 % glucan recovery and 81 % glucan-to-glucose conversion. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of remaining BDGs at 30 % loading resulted in 78.5 g bioethanol/L with a yield of 94 %. The minimum selling price of bioethanol varies from $0.149-$0.836/kg, contingent on the co-product market prices. The biorefinery processing of one ton of BDGs caused a 60 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to that of the traditional production of 88 kg corn-lactic acid, 70 kg antioxidant phenolics, 234 kg soybean protein, and 225 kg corn-bioethanol, along with emissions from BDG landfilling. Information on biotransformation of antivirals in the side-stream partial nitritation (PN) process was limited. In this study, a side-stream PN sludge was adopted to investigate favipiravir biotransformation under controlled ammonium and pH levels. Results showed that free nitrous acid (FNA) was an important factor that inhibited ammonia oxidation and the cometabolic biodegradation of favipiravir induced by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). The removal efficiency of favipiravir reached 12.6% and 35.0% within 6 days at the average FNA concentrations of 0.07 and 0.02 mg-N L -1 , respectively. AOB-induced cometabolism was the sole contributing mechanism to favipiravir removal, excluding AOB-induced metabolism and heterotrophic bacteria-induced biodegradation. The growth of Escherichia coli was inhibited by favipiravir, while the AOB-induced cometabolism facilitated the alleviation of the antimicrobial activities with the formed transformation products. The biotransformation pathways were proposed based on the roughly identified structures of transformation products, which mainly involved hydroxylation, nitration, dehydrogenation and covalent bond breaking under enzymatic conditions. pH treatment promotes single-cell lipid accumulation and significantly affects microalgae growth. This study investigates the correlation between lipid content and environmental pH using the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum). We compared three distinct pH treatment strategies-continuous, intermittent, and a two-phase culture-in P. tricornutum. Rigorous analysis of chlorophyll content, cell density, and lipid content indicated that ongoing pH treatment at pH 9.5 (CHES) emerged as the most effective approach for lipid accumulation in P. tricornutum. The CHES buffer treatment significantly boosted total lipid yield and led to a reduction in protein content. Carbohydrate content experienced a slight decline under CHES buffer treatment, but changes were observed in the activities of key enzymes. Specifically, [acyl-carrier-protein] S-malonyltransferase (MAT) activity decreased after 3 days in the control treatment, while no significant change was noted under the CHES buffer treatment. In contrast, diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT) activity showed upregulation 2 and 3 days post-CHES buffer treatment. Moreover, the study identified differentially expressed genes enriched in Gene Ontology (GO) terms associated with protein biosynthesis, photosynthesis, nucleoside metabolism, and transferase activity. These outcomes underscore the pivotal role of CHES buffer in orchestrating primary metabolism, potentially steering carbon flux towards lipogenesis. The performance of partial nitritation (PN)-moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in removal of antibiotics in the sidestream wastewater has not been investigated so far. In this work, the removal of ciprofloxacin was assessed under varying free nitrous acid (FNA) levels and different trophic modes. For the first time, a positive correlation was observed between ciprofloxacin removal and FNA levels, either in the autotrophic PN-MBBR or in the mixotrophic PN-MBBR, mainly ascribed to the FNA-stimulating effect on heterotrophic bacteria (HB)-induced biodegradation. The maximum ciprofloxacin removal efficiency (∼98 %) and removal rate constant (0.021 L g -1 SS h -1 ) were obtained in the mixotrophic PN-MBBR at an average FNA level of 0.056 mg-N L -1 , which were 5.8 and 51.2 times higher than the corresponding values in the autotrophic PN-MBBR at 0 mg FNA-N L -1 . Increasing FNA from 0.006 to 0.056 mg-N L -1 would inhibit ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB)-induced cometabolism and metabolism from 10.2 % and 6.9 % to 6.2 % and 6.4 %, respectively, while HB-induced cometabolism and metabolism increased from 31.2 % and 22.7 % to 41.9 % and 34.5 %, respectively. HB-induced cometabolism became the predominant biodegradation pathway (75.9 %-85.8 %) in the mixotrophic mode. Less antimicrobial biotransformation products without the piperazine or fluorine were newly identified to propose potential degradation pathways, corresponding to microbial-induced metabolic types and FNA levels. Landslides endanger lives and public infrastructure in mountainous areas. Monitoring landslide traces in real-time is difficult for scientists, sometimes costly and risky because of the harsh terrain and instability. Nowadays, modern technology may be able to identify landslide-prone locations and inform locals for hours or days when the weather worsens. This study aims to propose indicators to detect landslide traces on the fields and remote sensing images; build deep learning (DL) models to identify landslides from Sentinel-2 images automatically; and apply DL-trained models to detect this natural hazard in some particular areas of Vietnam. Nine DL models were trained based on three U-shaped architectures, including U-Net, U2-Net, and U-Net3+, and three options of input sizes. The multi-temporal Sentinel-2 images were chosen as input data for training all models. As a result, the U-Net, using an input image size of 32 × 32 and a performance of 97 % with a loss function of 0.01, can detect typical landslide traces in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the U-Net (64 × 64) can detect more considerable landslide traces. Based on multi-temporal remote sensing data, a different case study in Vietnam was chosen to see landslide traces over time based on the trained U-Net (32 × 32) model. The trained model allows mountain managers to track landslide occurrences during wet seasons. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) regulated by quorum sensing (QS) could directly mediate adhesion between microorganisms and form tight microbial aggregates. Besides, EPS have redox properties, which can facilitate electron transfer for promoting electroactive bacteria. Currently, the applications research on improving wastewater biological treatment performance based on QS regulated EPS have been widely reported, but reviews on the level of QS regulated EPS to enhance EPS function in microbial systems are still lacking. This work proposes the potential mechanisms of EPS synthesis by QS regulation from the viewpoint of material metabolism and energy metabolism, and summarizes the effects of QS on EPS synthesis. By synthesizing the role of QS in EPS regulation, we further point out the applications of QS-regulated EPS in wastewater biological treatment, which involve a series of aspects such as strengthening microbial colonization, mitigating membrane biofouling, improving the shock resistance of microbial metabolic systems, and strengthening the electron transfer capacity of microbial metabolic systems. Objective. Skeletal muscles are organized into distinct layers and exhibit anisotropic characteristics across various scales. Assessing the arrangement of skeletal muscles may provide valuable biomarkers for diagnosing muscle-related pathologies and evaluating the efficacy of clinical interventions. Approach . In this study, we propose a novel ultrafast ultrasound sequence constituted of steered pushing beams was proposed for ultrasound elastography applications in transverse isotropic muscle. Based on the propagation of the shear wave vertical mode, it is possible to fit the experimental results to retrieve in the same imaging plane, the shear modulus parallel to fibers as well as the elastic anisotropy factor (ratio of Young's moduli times the shear modulus perpendicular to fibers). Main results . The technique was demonstrated in vitro in phantoms and ex vivo in fusiform beef muscles. At last, the technique was applied in vivo on fusiform muscles ( biceps brachii ) and mono-pennate muscles ( gastrocnemius medialis ) during stretching and contraction. Significance . This novel sequence provides access to new structural and mechanical biomarkers of muscle tissue, including the elastic anisotropy factor, within the same imaging plane. The sulfur fluidizing bioreactor (S 0 FB) has significant superiorities in treating nitrate-rich wastewater. However, substantial self-acidification has been observed in engineering applications, resulting in frequent start-up failures. In this study, self-acidification was reproduced in a lab-scale S 0 FB. It was demonstrated that self-acidification was mainly induced by sulfur disproportionation process, accounting for 93.4 % of proton generation. Supplying sufficient alkalinity to both the influent (3000 mg/L) and the bulk (2000 mg/L) of S 0 FB was essential for achieving a successful start-up. Furthermore, the S 0 FB reached 10.3 kg-N/m 3 /d of nitrogen removal rate and 0.13 kg-PO 4 3- /m 3 /d of phosphate removal rate, respectively, surpassing those of the documented sulfur packing bioreactors by 7-129 times and 26-65 times. Microplastics are found ubiquitous in the natural environment and are an increasing source of worry for global health. Rapid industrialization and inappropriate plastic waste management in our daily lives have resulted in an increase in the amount of microplastics in the ecosystem. Microplastics that are <150 μm in size could be easily ingested by living beings and cause considerable toxicity. Microplastics can aggregate in living organisms and cause acute, chronic, carcinogenic, developmental, and genotoxic damage. As a result, a sustainable approach to reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic waste is required to manage microplastic pollution in the environment. However, there is still a significant lack of effective methods for managing these pollutants. Phosphate recovery from water is essential for reducing water eutrophication and alleviating the phosphorus resource crisis. In this study, spent coffee grounds and CaCl 2 were used as raw materials and a modifier, respectively, to create a novel calcium modified biochar (MBC) for removing phosphorus from water. The modified biochar (MBC) was the best at removing phosphorous when the modifier concentration was 1.5 M with theoretically maximum adsorption capacity of 70.26 mg/g. MBC also performed well in the wide pH range of 3-11 under different phosphorus concentration gradients, with phosphorus removal efficiency of more than 50 %. According to kinetic analysis, the adsorption process at low phosphorus concentrations (50-100 mg/L) can be more properly described by the pseudo-first-order model, while the pseudo-second-order model best describes the adsorption process at high concentrations (200-600 mg/L). The thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Characterization results revealed that surface precipitation, complexation, and ligand exchange were the dominant mechanisms of phosphorus adsorption. The start-up efficiency of the elemental sulfur packing bioreactor (S 0 PB) is constrained by the slow growth kinetics of autotrophic microorganisms, which is essentially optimized. This study aims to optimize start-up procedures and offer scientific guidance for the practical applications of S 0 PB. Through comparing the start-up efficiencies under various conditions related to inoculation, backwashing, and EBCT, it was found that these conditions did not significantly influence start-up time, but they did impact denitrification performance in detail. Using activated sludge as the inoculum was not recommended as the 2.5 ± 0.2 mg-N/L higher nitrite accumulation and 26.0 ± 5.1 % lower TN removal rate, compared to self-enrichment. Starting with a long-to-short EBCT (1 → 0.33 h) achieved higher nitrate removal of 11.5 ± 0.6 mg-N/L and eliminated nitrite accumulation compared to constantly short EBCT (0.33 h) conditions. Daily and postponed backwashing were suggested for long-to-short EBCT and constantly short EBCT start-up, respectively. Anaerobic digestion is a resource recovery method for organic waste, gaining attention due to carbon reduction. Disposing of anaerobic digestion effluent (ADE) is crucial for developing anaerobic digestion, but conventional wastewater treatment fails to effectively recover nutrients contained in the ADE. In the present study, the ADE without solid-liquid separation was mixed with sewage sludge and Chinese medicine residue for the composting, where the ADE could be recovered at high temperature through humification. Besides, the nitrogen balance, humification process, and microbial dynamics during the composting process were studied. The results showed that the group supplemented with ADE could increase the nitrogen retention efficiency by 2.21 % compared to the control group. High ammonia nitrogen content and salinity did not negatively affect the maturity and phytotoxicity of compost products and even increase the humification degree of compost products. Moreover, additional ADE may not alter microbial community structure, which could contribute to microbial succession. Elemental sulfur autotrophic denitrification (S 0 AD) processes are temperature-sensitive, presenting a substantial challenge for the practical implementation of S 0 AD bioreactors. In this study, a comprehensive methodology for designing and operating S 0 AD bioreactors was developed, effectively managing fluctuations in nitrogen removal efficiency caused by seasonal temperature variations. Initially, the nitrate removal rate was correlated with simulated on-site temperature and nitrate loading, revealing correlation coefficients of k 1 , k 2 , k 3 , and A as 5.42×10 -4 , -0.41, 0.04, and 0.13, respectively, to establish a mathematical model for predicting S 0 AD efficiency. Subsequently, by considering influence factors such as dissolved oxygen and dynamic sulfur consumption, the model was employed to accurately design a pilot-scale S 0 AD bioreactor for a case study. By utilizing an alternative multi-subunit operation, a stable effluent nitrate concentration of less than 8 mg-N/L was maintained throughout the year. Importantly, this approach resulted in a substantial reduction of 76.8% in excessive nitrate removal, sulfur consumption, and sulfate production.
