Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease of wheat, causing yield losses, reduced grain quality, and mycotoxin contamination. Breeding can mitigate the severity of FHB epidemics, especially with genomics-assisted methods. The mechanisms underlying resistance to FHB in wheat have been extensively studied, including phenological traits and genome-wide markers associated with FHB severity. Here, we aimed to improve genomic prediction for FHB resistance across breeding programs by incorporating FHB-correlated traits and FHB-associated loci as model covariates. We combined phenotypic data on FHB severity, anthesis date, and plant height with genome-wide marker data from five Central European winter wheat breeding programs for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and genomic prediction. Within all populations, FHB was correlated with anthesis date and/or plant height, and a marker linked to the semi-dwarfing locus Rht-D1 was detected with GWAS for FHB. Including the Rht-D1 marker, anthesis date, and/or plant height as covariates in genomic prediction modeling improved prediction accuracy not only within populations but also in cross-population scenarios. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) necessitates comprehensive management, addressing complex challenges in social communication, behavioral regulation, and sensory processing, for which wearable technologies offer valuable tools to monitor and support interventions. Therefore, this review explores recent advancements in wearable technology, categorizing devices based on executive function, psychomotor skills, and the behavioral/emotional/sensory domain, highlighting their potential to improve ongoing management and intervention. To ensure rigor and comprehensiveness, the review employs a PRISMA-based methodology. Specifically, literature searches were conducted across diverse databases, focusing on studies published between 2014 and 2024, to identify the most commonly used wearables in ASD research. Notably, 55.45% of the 110 devices analyzed had an undefined FDA status, 23.6% received 510(k) clearance, and only a small percentage were classified as FDA Breakthrough Devices or in the submission process. Additionally, approximately 50% of the devices utilized sensors like ECG, EEG, PPG, and EMG, highlighting their widespread use in real-time physiological monitoring. Our work comprehensively analyzes a wide array of wearable technologies, including emerging and advanced. While these technologies have the potential to transform ASD management through real-time data collection and personalized interventions, improved clinical validation and user-centered design are essential for maximizing their effectiveness and user acceptance. Released in 2004, Rebelde represented a turning point for telenovelas in Mexico, partly due to its subversion of conventions considered intrinsic to the genre. The series achieved this by relying heavily on fashion, not only to challenge traditional gender roles but also to address changing perceptions of class and wealth within the country. Clothing was used to explore identities new to Mexican entertainment media at the time and was central to many of the show's narratives and to the ways characters related to one another. As such, Rebelde was not only a reflection of a new globalized media landscape that had been arriving to Mexico in the previous decade but was also indicative of the ways in which teenagers all over the world were embracing these changes under the guise of freedom, rebellion and independence. Cloud-based platforms have gained popularity over the years because they can be used for multiple purposes, from synchronizing contact information to storing and managing user fitness data. These platforms are still in constant development and, so far, most of the data they store is entered manually by users. However, more and better wearable devices are being developed that can synchronize with these platforms to feed the information automatically. Another aspect that highlights the link between wearable devices and cloud-based health platforms is the improvement in which the symptomatology and/or physical status information of users can be stored and syn-chronized in real-time, 24 h a day, in health platforms, which in turn enables the possibility of synchronizing these platforms with specialized medical software to promptly detect important variations in user symptoms. This is opening opportunities to use these platforms as support for monitoring disease symptoms and, in general, for monitoring the health of users. In this work, the characteristics and possibilities of use of four popular platforms currently available in the market are explored, which are Apple Health, Google Fit, Samsung Health, and Fitbit. The Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) inhabits eastern North America, where it breeds in the northern USA and Canada, and winters in southeastern USA. In Mexico, the species is considered an irregular winter migrant in the states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. We report the first record of the Pine Warbler for the state of Durango, in the protected area of the Cañon de Fernandez State Park, municipality of Lerdo. On 8 January 2023 at 11:42 h, a Pine Warbler was observed perched on a cypress tree (Taxodium huegelii), located on the banks of the Nazas River. The bird was on a branch approximately two meters above the ground. This record expands the species' winter distribution in Mexico. Observations like this are essential for confirming movements of species in time and space during migration, and for documenting changes in the distribution of migratory species. Objective: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of outpatient appendectomy in patients with uncomplicated acute appendicitis. Background: Given that acute appendicitis is the most common cause of acute abdomen, the introduction of outpatient appendectomy protocols could significantly improve the effectiveness and sustainability of health care systems. Methods: A total of 300 patients were enrolled from October 2018 to June 2021 in the PENDI-CSI randomized clinical trial: 149 were assigned to the outpatient surgery (OPS) group and 151 to the inpatient surgery (IPS) group, followed by 1 month postoperatively. All patients were aged older than 14 years and had uncomplicated acute appendicitis. Exclusion criteria were pregnancy, neoplasms, inflammatory bowel disease, and high anesthetic risk (ASA IV). The OPS group was discharged from the postanesthesia care unit while the IPS group was admitted. Results: In total, 128 patients in the OPS group (85.9%) were discharged without admission. Predictors whether patients in the OPS group had to be admitted were aged over 31 years [relative risk (RR): 2.42 (1.04-5.65)], hypertension [RR: 6.21 (3.22-11.97)], anesthetic risk II-III [RR: 2.63 (1.17-5.94)], previous abdominal surgery [RR: 3.34 (1.55-7.20)], postoperative pain with visual analog scale > 6 [RR: 4.28 (2.67-6.86)], and postoperative fear [RR: 2.2 (1.04-4.67)]. There were no differences in terms of complications, readmissions, and reinterventions, and the perceived quality was similar in both groups. The outpatient modality produced savings of €1 034.97 per patient (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Outpatient appendectomy is safe and effective for uncomplicated acute appendicitis. Patient-perceived quality is similar to that of IPS, although it successfully reduces hospital costs compared with inpatient appendectomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a disease that affects all cereals worldwide. This includes emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccum), the ancestor of durum and bread wheat. We screened 143 cultivated emmer genotypes from a breeding program and gene bank collections for FHB severity at 2 locations over 2 years. Due to the high negative correlation between FHB severity and heading date (HD) (r = −0.65, p < 0.001), plot‐level FHB scores were corrected for HD before further analysis (FHBcorr). Genetic variation for FHB severity was high, ranging from 2.15 to 8.33 on a 1–9 scale. Twelve genotypes carried the semi‐dwarfing Rht‐B1b marker allele, which reduced plant height by 32 cm but increased FHB severity by 20%. Genome‐wide association study detected seven quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) for FHBcorr and three QTNs for plant height. The most important QTN for both traits was located on chromosome 4B, explaining 50.9% and 15.8% of the phenotypic variation in plant height and FHBcorr, respectively, and was localized near the semi‐dwarfing Rht‐B1 locus. Three other large‐effect loci for FHBcorr were found on chromosomes 5B and 7B. In total, 72.6% of phenotypic variation was explained by all markers. The use of Rht‐B1b in emmer breeding has a high effect on plant height but would entail the introgression of potent FHB‐resistance from either native or exotic sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Disease resistance traits are complex and quantitative in nature. Breeders regularly evaluate multiple important traits across diverse environments to employ them in genomics‐assisted breeding. In this study, we evaluated the prospects of genomic prediction models by incorporating genome‐wide association study (GWAS) results into single‐trait and multitrait genomic prediction scenarios, using two distinct panels: the NMBU panel and the GRAMINOR panel. A standard genomic prediction model (Base) and the Base model with the addition of significant GWAS markers as fixed covariates (Base + GWAS) were tested on both panels. The predictive ability of models was measured in terms of prediction ability by using Pearson's correlation method. An improvement of 0.05% to as high as a two‐fold improvement was observed in both the panels for single‐trait and multitrait scenarios. In general, multitrait models outperformed single‐trait models regardless of whether the GWAS markers were included. This study further concludes that multitrait‐based genomic predictions are superior to single trait–based ones when the associated traits are used and are well correlated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Introduction: Low hand grip strength (HGS) is one of the criteria for diagnosing frailty and sarcopenia, it is associated with the risk of metabolic and mental diseases; Studies have shown that in patients with arterial hypertension (BP), low HGS represents a risk of incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality, in addition to mortality from other causes; however, there are still no conclusive studies regarding the factors that determine HGS in BP., Objective: Identify the factors that influence low HGS in patients with BP., Material and Methods: Cross-sectional, observational, analytical case-control study. 100 patients with a diagnosis and treatment of HTN were included, and 100 controls matched by age and sex. Demographic data, self-report of physical activity, weight, height, body composition, and HGS were obtained. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square, were performed to look for differences in means, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Games-Howell post-hoc analysis. In all tests, a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was considered., Results: The average age of the sample was 47.40 ± 0.54; The results of body composition between the study groups did not show statistically significant differences; However, when looking for difference in means between tertiles of relative strength for the elements of body composition, different factors were found that influence HGS., Conclusions: Body composition is what determines HGS in patients between 30 and 60 years of age, however in patients with BP it is visceral fat that is responsible for low HGS., (Licencia CC 4.0 (BY-NC-ND) © 2024 Revista Médica del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.)

Purpose: To describe and compare a peritoneal closure technique using cyanoacrylate glue (Glubran 2 ® , GEM, Cardiolink SL) with a microdroplet device (Glutack ® , GEM, Cardiolink SL) in laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair (TAPP) of inguinal hernia with the routinely used barbed suture peritoneal closure (V-Lock 3.0, Covidien France)., Materials and Methods: From January to August 2022, 60 patients undergoing TAPP repair for uni- or bilateral inguinal hernia were randomized into one of two groups. One using as mesh fixation and peritoneal closure the Glutack ® device with Glubran 2 ® cyanoacrylate glue (Glu-close group) and the other using mesh fixation with cyanoacrylate and peritoneal closure with V-lock 3.0 (Sut-close group), with a follow-up of 12 months. Demographic variables, operative time, peritoneal closure time, main surgical findings and main intra- and postoperative complications were analyzed prospectively., Results: 63 patients were included with no losses to follow-up. The mean operative time was 34 min (range 58.25) for the glu-close group and 40 (range 64.25) for the sut-close group, with no conversion (0%) for either group. The mean flap closure time was 1.18 min (SD 24 0.19) for the glu-close group and 3.24 min (SD 0.78) for the sut-close group, with statistically significant differences ( p < 0.001). The intraoperative complication rate was 0 for the glu-close group and 0 for the sut-close group, with no significant difference. The median hospital stay was 0.8 days (range, 0-1) for both groups. The median duration of follow-up was 12 months and none had hernia recurrence.
