Enhancement of the participant experience in quality of life (QOL) research is imperative to improve recruitment and ongoing engagement in QOL studies. Purpose: To identify and evaluate the evidence for the benefits of cochlear implants for people with cognitive impairment or dementia in terms of speech recognition, quality of life, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, cognition, function in daily life, mental well-being, and caregiver burden., Methods: Ten electronic databases were searched systematically from inception to December 2023 for studies reporting on outcomes for cochlear implants that included adults identified with cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment, or dementia., Results: Thirteen studies were included in this review with a combined total of 222 cochlear implant patients with cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment. Two studies were non-randomised controlled design, the remainder were single group studies, case series or single case studies. Evidence suggested that people with cognitive impairment benefit in terms of improved speech recognition from cochlear implants, although they may benefit less than those with healthy cognition and the degree of benefit depends on the level of cognitive impairment. There was no evidence for increased adverse events among those with cognitive impairment. There was limited or no evidence for any other outcome., Conclusion: People with cognitive impairment or dementia do benefit from cochlear implants. To inform policy and clinical practice, further data are needed about the broader benefits of cochlear implants for people with cognitive impairment or dementia, and referral, eligibility, and cochlear implant support needs for people with cognitive impairment and their caregivers., (© 2024. We assessed the feasibility of obtaining parent-collected General Movement Assessment videos using the Baby Moves app. Among 261 participants from 4 Chicago NICUs, 70% submitted videos. Background: The Motor Optimality Score-Revised (MOS-R) is a clinical test of infant spontaneous movement at 3-5 months of age and has been associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with medical complexity. However the stability of the MOS-R tested at different developmental ages is not yet known., Aim: To determine if the repeated scoring of the MOS-R remained consistent when tested at two developmental ages in young infants., Study Design: In this prospective cohort study, infants were tested twice with the MOS-R between 12 and 13 weeks corrected age (CA) and 14-16 weeks CA. Bland Altman Plots were used to calculate agreement between the scores. Infants were grouped as having higher or lower medical complexity. MOS-R threshold scores were analyzed to assess changes over time within each group using Fisher's exact test., Subjects: 85 infants with history of hospitalization in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)., Results: The MOS-R scores had a high agreement with negligible bias (0.058) between timepoints (95 % CI -1.10, 1.22). Using a MOS-R cut point of 19, infants with higher medical complexity were more likely to change groups between timepoints than infants with lower medical complexity (p = 0.008), but this was not significantly different using cut points of 20 or 21., Conclusion: The MOS-R scores were stable when measured repeatedly in infants who were hospitalized in a NICU. Background: Sexual difficulties and vaginal pain are common following treatment for breast cancer., Aim: The goal of this study was to evaluate an online mindfulness-based group sex therapy vs an online supportive sex education group therapy to address these sexual difficulties., Methods: Breast cancer survivors (n = 118) were randomized to 1 of the 2 arms; 116 provided informed consent and completed the time 1 assessment. Treatment included 8 weekly 2-hour online group sessions. Those randomized to the mindfulness group completed daily mindfulness exercises, and those in the comparison arm read and completed exercises pertaining to sex education., Outcomes: Assessments were repeated at posttreatment and 6 months after the completion of the group., Results: There was a main effect of treatment on primary endpoints of sexual desire, sexual distress, and vaginal pain, with all outcomes showing significant improvements, with no differential impact by treatment arm. Secondary endpoints of interoceptive awareness, mindfulness, and rumination about sex also significantly improved with both treatments, with no group-by-time interaction., Conclusion: Both mindfulness-based sex therapy and supportive sex education delivered in group format online are effective for improving many facets of sexual function, vaginal pain, rumination, mindfulness, and interoceptive awareness in breast cancer survivors., Strengths and Limitations: We used a randomized methodology. Future studies should seek to diversify participants., Clinical Implications: These findings highlight the need to offer similar treatments to more breast cancer survivors immediately after and in the years following cancer treatment as a means of improving survivorship quality of life., (© The Author(s) 2024.
