The density of wood is a key indicator of the carbon investment strategies of trees, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here we analyse information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to 30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. Introduction: Since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war, most reports have focused on trauma and combat conditions. Trauma care is essential; however, disease and nonbattle injuries (DNBIs) also burden armies and reduce combat effectiveness. Dental emergencies (DEs) account for a substantial portion of DNBI, but there is limited information on Ukrainian military dental readiness. In September 2023, investigators were informed that Ukrainian military personnel were treated for DEs at 2 dental clinics in Germany., Materials and Methods: The investigators requested deidentified data from the Corporate Dental System (CDS), which is a repository for dental treatment records utilized by the U.S. Army. The data request captured DE treatment performed for Ukrainian military personnel in Germany from January 1, 2023, to September 20, 2023. The CDS report on DE encounters included the following: Gender, age, procedure codes, and provider narratives. This study was approved by the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Institutional Review Board as research not involving human subjects and provided Log Number H-24-030nh., Results: The CDS report captured 408 Ukrainian military DE encounters. A total of 360 Ukrainian military personnel were treated for DE during the 9-month reporting period in 2023. Oral surgery was the most common DE treatment category and accounted for 55.8% (N = 201) of DE procedures. Restorative dentistry procedures accounted for 18.1% of DE procedures. Of the 27 multiple category treatments, 25 had oral surgery procedures as one of the treatments. Restorative dentistry procedures were performed in 19 of the multiple category cases., Conclusions: The DEs in the Ukrainian military cohort suggest that chronic, untreated dental disease has progressed without routine care for years. The assertion that caries has progressed to a nonrestorable condition is supported by the distribution that 63% of all DE visits included oral surgery treatment. We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central-eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia., (© 2024. Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has varying prevalence rates worldwide, often higher in culturally diverse populations. Cultural differences can affect autism symptom recognition. Language barriers and differing healthcare attitudes may delay diagnosis and intervention. Most autism screening tools were developed in Western, predominantly Caucasian populations, and their appropriateness in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) contexts remains uncertain. There is a lack of comprehensive data on the accuracy of these tools in identifying autism in culturally and linguistically diverse groups. Consequently, it is unclear whether current screening tools are culturally sensitive and appropriate., Methods: A research protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022367308). A comprehensive search of literature published from inception to October 2022 was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Medline Complete, Scopus, PsychInfo and CINAHL Complete. The articles were screened using pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data extracted included participant demographics, screening tool psychometric properties (validity, reliability, accuracy) and acceptability. A narrative synthesis approach was used., Results: From the initial retrieval of 2310 citations, 51 articles were included for analysis. The studies were conducted in 32 different countries with screening tools in the following languages: Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, Persian, Serbian, Italian, French, Sinhala, Taiwanese, Finnish, Northern Soho, Albanian, German, Japanese, Vietnamese, Farsi, Greek and English. There was no data on acceptability of the screening tools in CALD populations. Validity, reliability, and accuracy ranged from poor to excellent with consistently high performance by screening tools devised within the populations they are intended for., Conclusions: The review evaluated autism screening tools in culturally diverse populations, with a focus on validity, reliability, and acceptability. It highlighted variations in the effectiveness of these tools across different cultures, with high performance by tools devised specifically for the intended population, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive screening tools. A 42-year-old Vietnamese egg factory worker in Ishikawa prefecture, Japan, presented with itchy concentric erythema on the trunk and left calf. The lesions tested positive by direct potassium hydroxide examination, and two fungal strains were isolated. The isolates produced conidia abundantly and were morphologically indistinguishable from Trichophyton mentagrophytes/interdigitale, but were identified as Trichophyton indotineae by internal transcribed spacer sequence of ribosomal DNA. The lesions were refractory to treatment with topical luliconazole (LLCZ) cream for 4 weeks but subsided with oral itraconazole (ITCZ) 100 mg/day for 4 weeks in combination with topical lanoconazole (LCZ) cream. The lesions recurred 6 weeks after discontinuation of oral ITCZ, and an additional isolate was cultured. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of antimycotics for the isolate cultured at the first visit were: terbinafine (TBF) 0.03 μg/mL, ITCZ 0.015 μg/mL, LLCZ 0.0005 μg/mL, and LCZ 0.002 μg/mL. No TBF-resistant mutation in the amino acid sequence of squalene epoxidase, i.e., Leu 393 Ser/Phe or Phe 397 Leu, was detected in the isolate. The reason for recalcitrance in this case, despite the isolate's sensitivity to antimycotics, was unclear. Possible factors include insufficient use of the antimycotics, incomplete removal of abundantly produced conidia from the lesions, the patient's environment, and a language gap between the patient and physician hindering communication., (© 2024 Japanese Dermatological Association.)

High levels of stress and inactivity likely contribute to chronic disease disparities among Latinas in the U.S. and call for intervention. To inform such efforts, the current study examined the relationships among changes (over time) in physical activity, stress, and related cardiometabolic biomarkers among sedentary (mostly) first generation Latinas. Data are taken from a randomized controlled trial (N = 199 Latinas) of two home-based physical activity interventions (Original vs. theory- and technology- Enhanced versions). Physical activity and perceived stress were assessed at baseline and 6 and 12 months. Blood draws occurred at baseline and 6 months in a random subsample (N = 153). The participants were underactive (<60/min week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) Mexican American (89%) women with moderate perceived stress scores (M = 21.49, SD = 8.55, range = 0-40) and excess weight (M BMI = 30.6) at baseline. Overall, participants reported decreases in stress after 6 months enroled in the physical activity programs. The odds of a reduction in perceived stress were 11% higher among Enhanced versus Original Intervention participants (OR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.05-2.27). Those who met physical activity guidelines were significantly more likely to report reductions in perceived stress over 6 months (OR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.08-4.16). Furthermore, those who reported reductions in perceived stress over 6 months reported significantly more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity at 12 months (+69 min/week, SE = 27.98, p = 0.01) compared to those who did not. Greater reductions in perceived stress over 6 months were associated with greater improvements in cardiometabolic biomarkers (HbA1c, triglycerides, p's < 0.05). These results support a bidirectional relationship between improvements in stress and physical activity among Latinas. Examining sub-threshold autistic traits in non-autistic first-degree relatives of individuals on the autism spectrum, known as the Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP), could provide new insights into the associations and familial aggregation of autistic traits. This study was a retrospective cross-sectional study of parents (n = 1008), probands with autism (n = 613), and unaffected siblings (n = 221) of probands with autism. BAP traits were examined by the BAP Questionnaire and Communication Checklist-Adult in parents, Autism Developmental Observation Scale-Second edition in probands, and Social Responsiveness Scale in siblings. Multivariable linear regression analyses were used to investigate the associations of parental BAP traits on autistic traits in probands and unaffected sibling BAP traits. Fathers showed significantly increased aloofness, pragmatic language difficulties, and social engagement problems compared to mothers. Female siblings showed increased difficulties with social cognition compared to male siblings. Adjusted models of the regression analyses showed that all BAP traits in fathers were significantly associated with BAP trait expression in probands with autism. Additionally, all of mother's BAP traits were significantly associated with unaffected siblings' BAP trait expression while only fathers' aloofness and rigidity traits were inversely associated with siblings' BAP trait expression. Finally, there were significant inverse interactions noted between parent's BAP traits and their children's BAP trait expression. This study demonstrated differences in how males and females express BAP traits and also identified differences in parent-child associations by sex, with fathers having a greater effect on their proband children's expression of BAP traits than mothers., (© 2024. Introduction: The BIN1 coding variant rs138047593 (K358R) is linked to Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD) via targeted exome sequencing., Methods: To elucidate the functional consequences of this rare coding variant on brain amyloidosis and neuroinflammation, we generated BIN1 K358R knock-in mice using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. These mice were subsequently bred with 5xFAD transgenic mice, which serve as a model for Alzheimer's pathology., Results: The presence of the BIN1 K358R variant leads to increased cerebral amyloid deposition, with a dampened response of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, but not microglia, at both the cellular and transcriptional levels. This correlates with decreased neurofilament light chain in both plasma and brain tissue. Synaptic densities are significantly increased in both wild-type and 5xFAD backgrounds homozygous for the BIN1 K358R variant., Discussion: The BIN1 K358R variant modulates amyloid pathology in 5xFAD mice, attenuates the astrocytic and oligodendrocytic responses to amyloid plaques, decreases damage markers, and elevates synaptic densities., Highlights: BIN1 rs138047593 (K358R) coding variant is associated with increased risk of LOAD. Background & Aims: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) causes an abdominal pain syndrome associated with poor quality of life. We conducted a clinical trial to further investigate the efficacy and safety of camostat, an oral serine protease inhibitor that has been used to alleviate pain in CP., Methods: This was a double-blind randomized controlled trial that enrolled adults with CP with a baseline average daily worst pain score ≥4 on a numeric rating system. Participants were randomized (1:1:1:1) to receive camostat at 100, 200, or 300 mg 3 times daily or placebo. The primary end point was a 4-week change from baseline in the mean daily worst pain intensity score (0-10 on a numeric rating system) using a mixed model repeated measure analysis. Secondary end points included changes in alternate pain end points, quality of life, and safety., Results: A total of 264 participants with CP were randomized. Changes in pain from baseline were similar between the camostat groups and placebo, with differences of least squares means of -0.11 (95% CI, -0.90 to 0.68), -0.04 (95% CI, -0.85 to 0.78), and -0.11 (95% CI, -0.94 to 0.73) for the 100 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg groups, respectively. Multiple subgroup analyses were similar for the primary end point, and no differences were observed in any of the secondary end points. Treatment-emergent adverse events attributed to the study drug were identified in 42 participants (16.0%)., Conclusion: We were not able to reject the null hypothesis of no difference in improvements in pain or quality of life outcomes in participants with painful CP who received camostat compared with placebo. Rabbit Fibroma is a Leporipoxviral disease and is considered the third most common cutaneous neoplasm in pet rabbits. Two domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were submitted to the veterinary clinic due to the presence of a nodule on the lip. Histologically, epithelial cells of the epidermis and hair follicles showed mild to moderate ballooning degeneration, spongiosis, and several eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The dermis was expanded by atypical spindle cells that also showed eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The tissues were evaluated by using transmission electron microscopy. In both cases, keratinocytes exhibit several electron dense and pleomorphic intracytoplasmic viral particles consistent with Poxviruses. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of Rabbit Fibroma Virus infection in Domestic Rabbits in Mexico.
