Objective: To analyze the demographic profiles of participants in the traumatic brain injury, burn injury, and spinal cord injury model systems databases., Design: Data from the Burn Model System (BMS), Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS), and Spinal Cord Injury Model System (SCIMS) National Databases were analyzed from 1994-2020., Setting: Not applicable., Participants: The study included participants aged ≥16 years (N=42,407) with available data in selected variables, totaling 4807 burn injury, 19,127 TBI, and 18,473 SCI participants., Interventions: Not applicable., Main Outcome Measures: Variables including age, race, ethnicity, sex, education level, primary payor source, family income level, employment status at 1 year postinjury, etiology, and mortality at 1 year postinjury were analyzed across the database., Results: Median ages at injury for BMS (40.4y), TBIMS (40y), and SCIMS (38y) National Database participants were comparable. Men constituted approximately 75% of participants in the BMS, TBIMS, and SCIMS datasets, with approximately 75% having a high-school education or less. The proportion of participants funded by Medicare during initial hospital care varied across the BMS (14%), TBIMS (15.6%), and SCIMS (10.2%). For family income (data available for BMS and SCIMS), approximately 30% of these participants reported a family income <$25,000. Etiology data indicated 49.0% of traumatic brain injury and 40.7% of spinal cord injury cases resulted from vehicular incidents., Conclusions: An overlapping at-risk population for these injuries appears to be middle-aged men with lower education levels and family incomes who have access to vehicles. Introduction: Pooling and comparing data from the existing global network of burn registers represents a powerful, yet untapped, opportunity to improve burn prevention and care. There have been no studies investigating whether registers are sufficiently similar to allow data comparisons. It is also not known what differences exist that could bias analyses. Understanding this information is essential prior to any future data sharing. The aim of this project was to compare the variables collected in countrywide and intercountry burn registers to understand their similarities and differences., Methods: Register custodians were invited to participate and share their data dictionaries. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were compared to understand each register population. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the number of unique variables. Variables were classified into themes. Definition, method, timing of measurement, and response options were compared for a sample of register concepts., Results: 13 burn registries participated in the study. Inclusion criteria varied between registers. Median number of variables per register was 94 (range 28 - 890), of which 24% (range 4.8 - 100%) were required to be collected. Six themes (patient information, admission details, injury, inpatient, outpatient, other) and 41 subthemes were identified. Register concepts of age and timing of injury show similarities in data collection. Intent, mechanism, inhalational injury, infection, and patient death show greater variation in measurement., Conclusions: We found some commonalities between registers and some differences. Commonalities would assist in any future efforts to pool and compare data between registers. Differences between registers could introduce selection and measurement bias, which needs to be addressed in any strategy aiming to facilitate burn register data sharing. Introduction: The association between military service history and long-term outcomes after burn injury is unknown. This study uses data from the Burn Model System National Database to compare outcomes of individuals with and without self-reported military service history., Methods: Outcome measures were assessed at 12 months after injury including the Veterans Rand-12 Item Health Survey/Short Form-12, Satisfaction With Life Scale, Patient Reported Outcomes Measure Information System 29, 4-D Itch scale, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Check List - Civilian Version, self-reported Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and employment status. This study included 675 people with burns of whom 108 reported a history of military service., Results: The military service history group was more likely to be older, and male. Those with military service were most likely to be on Medicare insurance and those without military service history were most likely to be on Private Insurance/HMP/PPO. Balance is an important component of daily function and impairments can lead to injury and quality-of-life limitations. Balance is not well studied in the burn population. This study examines the frequency of long-term balance impairments and associated factors after a burn injury. The Burn Model System National Database was analyzed. Trouble with balance was self-reported at discharge, 6, 12, 24, and 60 months after injury. Regression analyses examined the associations between demographic and clinical characteristics and balance impairments at 12 months. Of 572 participants, balance impairments were most reported at discharge (40.3%), continuing over 60 months (26.8-36.0%). Those reporting balance impairments ( n = 153) were more likely to be older, unemployed, have Medicaid or Medicare, receive inpatient rehabilitation, receive outpatient physical or occupational therapy, have vision problems, have leg or feet burns and swelling, and have foot numbness compared to those without ( p ≤ 0.001). Regression analysis demonstrated a 4% increased odds of balance impairment for every increase in year of age ( p < 0.001), 71% lower odds if employed at time of injury ( p < 0.001), and 140% higher odds if receiving outpatient physical or occupational therapy at 12 months ( p = 0.008). Common reports of balance impairments highlight the need for routine screenings to identify burn survivors that may benefit from targeted interventions., Competing Interests: Ryan received financial support from MediWound for contracted research.
