Numerous studies have shown reduced performance in plants that are surrounded by neighbours of the same species1,2, a phenomenon known as conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD)3. A long-held ecological hypothesis posits that CNDD is more pronounced in tropical than in temperate forests4,5, which increases community stabilization, species coexistence and the diversity of local tree species6,7. Previous analyses supporting such a latitudinal gradient in CNDD8,9 have suffered from methodological limitations related to the use of static data10-12. Here we present a comprehensive assessment of latitudinal CNDD patterns using dynamic mortality data to estimate species-site-specific CNDD across 23 sites. Averaged across species, we found that stabilizing CNDD was present at all except one site, but that average stabilizing CNDD was not stronger toward the tropics. However, in tropical tree communities, rare and intermediate abundant species experienced stronger stabilizing CNDD than did common species. This pattern was absent in temperate forests, which suggests that CNDD influences species abundances more strongly in tropical forests than it does in temperate ones13. We also found that interspecific variation in CNDD, which might attenuate its stabilizing effect on species diversity14,15, was high but not significantly different across latitudes. Although the consequences of these patterns for latitudinal diversity gradients are difficult to evaluate, we speculate that a more effective regulation of population abundances could translate into greater stabilization of tropical tree communities and thus contribute to the high local diversity of tropical forests.

The transaction cost economics framework has been used for more than three decades to explain how firms transact and organize in hierarchies and markets. However, when market innovations and societal changes occur, organizing theories should be updated to reflect the novel aspects of the environment. In this paper, we leverage recent technology and social innovations as a catalyst for synthesizing and extending transaction cost theory. Venture funding transactions today only vaguely resemble funding transactions from decades past. Yet, scholars still frequently rely on theoretical tenets that were established before the advent of the internet to explain funding transactions. In this research, we codify venture-funding modalities along a continuum from more market-esque to more hierarchical and develop funding transaction propositions for the new funding context. Macroclimate drives vegetation distributions, but fine‐scale topographic variation can generate microclimate refugia for plant persistence in unsuitable areas. However, we lack quantitative descriptions of topography‐driven microclimatic variation and how it shapes forest structure, diversity, and composition. We hypothesized that topographic variation and the presence of the forest overstory cause spatiotemporal microclimate variation affecting tree performance, causing forest structure, diversity, and composition to vary with topography and microclimate, and topography and the overstory to buffer microclimate. In a 20.2‐ha inventory plot in the North American Great Plains, we censused woody stems ≥1 cm in diameter and collected detailed topographic and microclimatic data. Across 59‐m of elevation, microclimate covaried with topography to create a sharp desiccation gradient, and topography and the overstory buffered understory microclimate. The magnitude of microclimatic variation mirrored that of regional‐scale variation: with increasing elevation, there was a decrease in soil moisture corresponding to the difference across ~2.1° of longitude along the east‐to‐west aridity gradient and an increase in air temperature corresponding to the difference across ~2.7° of latitude along the north‐to‐south gradient. More complex forest structure and higher diversity occurred in moister, less‐exposed habitats, and species occupied distinct topographic niches. Our study demonstrates how topographic and microclimatic gradients structure forests in putative climate‐change refugia, by revealing ecological processes enabling populations to be maintained during periods of unfavorable macroclimate. This article is an example of "Lessons from the Field." In early 2021, a call to action resulted in an unprecedented surge of volunteers for Utah's public health system. This call to action was in support of the rollout of COVID‐19 vaccine across the state and the need to vaccinate the population as quickly and efficiently as possible. In this case study, we describe the events that preceded the surge of volunteers as well as challenges and resolutions to volunteer onboarding. Additionally, we discuss the importance of collaboration between local health departments and the Utah Department of Health and Human Services and describe how the partnership was strengthened by this specific emergency response. ABSTRACT The lower Nama Group in southern Namibia contains trace fossils and soft‐bodied and biomineralized macro‐organisms from the terminal Ediacaran Period (ca 550 to 539 Ma), offering insights into early metazoan evolution. Interpretation of the fossilized Nama Group organisms as being preserved in, or very close to, the environments in which they originally lived has yielded insights into organism feeding habits, reproduction and life histories. Sedimentological evidence presented here reveals that typical ‘Nama‐type’ Ediacaran macro‐fossils (Cloudina, Ernietta, Pteridinium and Rangea) in the Dabis and Zaris formations of the Witputz Sub‐basin seldom preserve organisms in life position in their original palaeoenvironments. Both soft‐bodied and biomineralizing organisms were transported in sediment gravity flows (debris flows, turbidity flows and transitional debris flow‐turbidity flow ‘hybrid’ event beds) or combined flow (hummocky cross‐strata) to their terminal environment of deposition in shoreface and offshore shelf settings. Transport has placed studied beds and their associated macro‐organisms in depositional settings detached from the original life habitat, with macro‐organisms sourced from shallower‐water, up‐slope environments. Integrated sedimentological and palaeontological data indicate that the Nama Group may not provide a high‐fidelity record of original Nama ecosystems. Individual macro‐organisms are clasts within beds, and can be horizontal, imbricated or chaotic in orientation. Transport can blend different communities at various scales (bed, outcrop and basin), complicating interpretations of life habitats, species interactions and taxon‐specific ecology, such as feeding behaviour and life position of organisms. Recognition of organism transport also impacts datasets used for comparing global Ediacaran fossil assemblages, with implications for tracking spatial and temporal patterns in early animal evolution. Populations of forest trees exhibit large temporal fluctuations, but little is known about the synchrony of these fluctuations across space, including their sign, magnitude, causes and characteristic scales. These have important implications for metapopulation persistence and theoretical community ecology. Using data from permanent forest plots spanning local, regional and global spatial scales, we measured spatial synchrony in tree population growth rates over sub-decadal and decadal timescales and explored the relationship of synchrony to geographical distance. Synchrony was high at local scales of less than 1 km, with estimated Pearson correlations of approximately 0.6-0.8 between species' population growth rates across pairs of quadrats. Synchrony decayed by approximately 17-44% with each order of magnitude increase in distance but was still detectably positive at distances of 100 km and beyond. Dispersal cannot explain observed large-scale synchrony because typical seed dispersal distances (<100 m) are far too short to couple the dynamics of distant forests on decadal timescales. We attribute the observed synchrony in forest dynamics primarily to the effect of spatially synchronous environmental drivers (the Moran effect), in particular climate, although pests, pathogens and anthropogenic drivers may play a role for some species.

Understanding the distribution of hundreds of thousands of plant metabolites across the plant kingdom presents a challenge. To address this, we curated publicly available LC-MS/MS data from 19,075 plant extracts and developed the plantMASST reference database encompassing 246 botanical families, 1,469 genera, and 2,793 species. This taxonomically focused database facilitates the exploration of plant-derived molecules using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) spectra. This tool will aid in drug discovery, biosynthesis, (chemo)taxonomy, and the evolutionary ecology of herbivore interactions.

Transcriptomics provides a versatile tool for ecological monitoring. Here, through genome-guided profiling of transcripts mapping to 33 042 gene models, expression differences can be discerned among multi-year and seasonal leaf samples collected from American beech trees at two latitudinally separated sites. Despite a bottleneck due to post-Columbian deforestation, the single nucleotide polymorphism-based population genetic background analysis has yielded sufficient variation to account for differences between populations and among individuals. Our expression analyses during spring-summer and summer-autumn transitions for two consecutive years involved 4197 differentially expressed protein coding genes. Using Populus orthologues we reconstructed a protein-protein interactome representing leaf physiological states of trees during the seasonal transitions. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed gene ontology terms that highlight molecular functions and biological processes possibly influenced by abiotic forcings such as recovery from drought and response to excess precipitation. Further, based on 324 co-regulated transcripts, we focused on a subset of GO terms that could be putatively attributed to late spring phenological shifts. Our conservative results indicate that extended transcriptome-based monitoring of forests can capture diverse ranges of responses including air quality, chronic disease, as well as herbivore outbreaks that require activation and/or downregulation of genes collectively tuning reaction norms maintaining the survival of long living trees such as the American beech.
