1. Functions and operators of the polyharmonic and polyanalytic Clifford fine structures on the $S$-spectrum

Abstract

The spectral theory on the $S$-spectrum originated to give quaternionic quantum mechanics a precise mathematical foundation and as a spectral theory for linear operators in vector analysis. This theory has proven to be significantly more general than initially anticipated, naturally extending to fully Clifford operators and revealing unexpected connections with the spectral theory based on the monogenic spectrum, developed over forty years ago by A. McIntosh and collaborators. In recent years, we have combined slice hyperholomorphic functions with the Fueter-Sce mapping theorem, also called Fueter-Sce extension theorem, to broaden the class of functions and operators to which the theory can be applied. This generalization has led to the definition of what we call the {\em fine structures on the $S$-spectrum}, consisting of classes of functions that admit an integral representation and their associated functional calculi. In this paper, we focus on the fine structures within the Clifford algebra setting, particularly addressing polyharmonic functions, polyanalytic functions, holomorphic Cliffordian functions and their associated functional calculi defined via integral representation formulas. Moreover, we demonstrate that the monogenic functional calculus, defined via the monogenic Cauchy formula, and the $F$-functional calculus of the fine structures, defined via the Fueter-Sce mapping theorem in integral form, yield the same operator.

2. On the harmonic generalized Cauchy-Kovalevskaya extension and its connection with the Fueter-Sce theorem

Abstract

One of the primary objectives of this paper is to establish a generalized Cauchy-Kovalevskaya extension for axially harmonic functions. We demonstrate that the result can be expressed as a power series involving Bessel-type functions of specific differential operators acting on two initial functions. Additionally, we analyze the decomposition of the harmonic CK extension in terms of integrals over the sphere $ \mathbb{S}^{m-1} $ involving functions of plane wave type. Another key goal of this paper is to explore the relationship between the harmonic Cauchy-Kovalevskaya extension and the Fueter-Sce theorem. The Fueter-Sce theorem outlines a two-step process for constructing axially monogenic functions in $ \mathbb{R}^{m+1}$ starting from holomorphic functions in one complex variable. The first step generates the class of slice monogenic functions, while the second step produces axially monogenic functions by applying the pointwise differential operator $ \Delta_{\mathbb{R}{^{m+1}}}^{\frac{m-1}{2}} $ with $m$ being odd, known as the Fueter-Sce map, to a slice monogenic function. By suitably factorizing the Fueter-Sce map, we introduce the set of axially harmonic functions, which serves as an intermediate class between slice monogenic and axially monogenic functions. In this paper, we establish a connection between the harmonic CK extension and the factorization of the Fueter-Sce map. This connection leads to a new notion of harmonic polynomials, which we show to form a basis for the Riesz potential. Finally, we also construct a basis for the space of axially harmonic functions.

3. Nested Sampling for Exploring Lennard-Jones Clusters

Abstract

Lennard-Jones clusters, while an easy system, have a significant number of non equivalent configurations that increases rapidly with the number of atoms in the cluster. Here, we aim at determining the cluster partition function; we use the nested sampling algorithm, which transforms the multidimensional integral into a one-dimensional one, to perform this task. In particular, we use the nested_fit program, which implements slice sampling as search algorithm. We study here the 7-atoms and 36-atoms clusters and then look at the computational cost of nested_fit with and without parallelisation. We find that nested_fit is able to recover phase transitions and find different stable configurations of the cluster. Furthermore, the implementation of the slice sampling algorithm has a clear impact on the computational cost.

Abstract

The RES-NOVA project is an experimental initiative aimed at detecting neutrinos from the next galactic supernova using PbWO$_{4}$ cryogenic detectors, operated at low temperatures in a low-background environment. By utilizing archaeological lead (Pb) as the target material, RES-NOVA leverages its high radiopurity, large nuclear mass, and the natural abundance of $^{207}$Pb, making it well-suited for exploring both spin-independent and spin-dependent Dark Matter (DM) interactions via nuclear scattering. This work presents a background model developed for the RES-NOVA technology demonstrator and evaluates its implications for Dark Matter detection. Detailed calculations of nuclear matrix elements, combined with the unique properties of archaeological Pb, demonstrate RES-NOVA's potential as a complementary tool to existing direct detection experiments for studying Dark Matter interactions. The experiment will conduct DM searches over a broad mass range spanning 4 orders of magnitude, from sub-GeV/$c^2$ to TeV/$c^2$. In the most optimistic scenario, RES-NOVA is expected to probe DM-nucleon cross-sections down to 1$\times 10^{-43}$ cm$^2$ and 2$\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for candidates with masses of 2 GeV/$c^2$ and 20 GeV/$c^2$, respectively.

Abstract

Political polarization, a key driver of social fragmentation, has drawn increasing attention for its role in shaping online and offline discourse. Despite significant efforts, accurately measuring polarization within ideological distributions remains a challenge. This study evaluates five widely used polarization measures, testing their strengths and weaknesses with synthetic datasets and a real-world case study on YouTube discussions during the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Building on these findings, we present a novel adaptation of Kleinberg's burst detection algorithm to improve mode detection in polarized distributions. By offering both a critical review and an innovative methodological tool, this work advances the analysis of ideological patterns in social media discourse.

6. Gravitational signatures beyond Newton: exploring hierarchical three-body dynamics

Abstract

Hierarchical three-body systems offer a compelling framework to explore the subtle interplay between Newtonian and relativistic gravitational effects in astrophysical environments. In this work, we investigate post-Newtonian corrections to the periastron shift within such systems, focusing on the impact of orbital eccentricity and relativistic modifications to the center of mass. Modeling the secondary body's influence as a quadrupolar perturbation, we rigorously compare Newtonian, Schwarzschild, and post-Newtonian quadrupolar contributions to orbital precession. Our analysis demonstrates that Newtonian quadrupolar effects could be observable in the orbit of the S87 star around Sagittarius A* if an intermediate-mass black hole is present. Additionally, post-Newtonian quadrupolar corrections, though subtle, may notably influence the dynamics of small Solar System bodies in the presence of massive companions. These findings provide critical insights into detecting relativistic corrections in astrophysical systems with current high-precision instruments, such as GRAVITY. By bridging classical and relativistic dynamics, this study enhances our understanding of gravitational interactions in multi-body systems and paves the way for testing general relativity in the complex gravitational fields of galactic nuclei and planetary systems., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The optimal "twisted" geometry of a crystalline layer on a crystal is long known, but that on a quasicrystal is still unknown and open. We predict analytically that the layer equilibrium configuration will generally exhibit a nonzero misfit angle. The theory perfectly agrees with numerical optimization of a colloid monolayer on a quasiperiodic decagonal optical lattice. Strikingly different from crystal-on-crystal epitaxy, the structure of the novel emerging twisted state exhibits an unexpected stripe pattern. 8. A Bayesian Approach for Strong Field QED Tests with He-like Ions

Abstract

Detailed comparisons between theory and experiment for quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in He-like ions have been performed in the literature to search for hints of new physics. Different frequentist statistical analyses of the existing atomic transition energy data have shown contradictory conclusions as to the presence of possible deviations from the theory predictions. We present here an approach using Bayesian statistics which allows to assign quantitative probabilities to the different deviation models from theory for He-like ions for $Z = 5$ to 92. Potential deviations beyond the standard model or higher order QED effects are modeled with $f(Z) \propto Z^k$ functions. Considering the currently available data, no significant difference between theory and experiment is found, and we show that recent experiments have reduced the possible deviations previously observed in the literature. Using past measurements and a weighted average on the different deviation models, we indicate the accuracy required for future measurements to investigated possible divergences., Comment: Document containing 6 pages and 3 figures. 9. Pulsar timing in the Galactic Center

Abstract

We propose a novel approach which implements the relativistic calculations of the photon travel time into a robust timing model for pulsars orbiting supermassive black holes. We demonstrate the inability of current timing codes based on the post-Newtonian expansion of General Relativity to correctly estimate the relativistic time of arrival of the emitted pulses at an Earth-based observatory. We also show how a misestimation of the pulsar parameters can lead to the appearance of phase-dependent residual, which hints at a tremendous constraining power of the binary and intrinsic parameters for timing observations of potential pulsars at the Galactic Center., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. 10. Adaptive posterior distributions for uncertainty analysis of covariance matrices in Bayesian inversion problems for multioutput signals

Abstract

In this paper we address the problem of performing Bayesian inference for the parameters of a nonlinear multi-output model and the covariance matrix of the different output signals. We propose an adaptive importance sampling (AIS) scheme for multivariate Bayesian inversion problems, which is based in two main ideas: the variables of interest are split in two blocks and the inference takes advantage of known analytical optimization formulas. We estimate both the unknown parameters of the multivariate non-linear model and the covariance matrix of the noise. In the first part of the proposed inference scheme, a novel AIS technique called adaptive target adaptive importance sampling (ATAIS) is designed, which alternates iteratively between an IS technique over the parameters of the non-linear model and a frequentist approach for the covariance matrix of the noise. In the second part of the proposed inference scheme, a prior density over the covariance matrix is considered and the cloud of samples obtained by ATAIS are recycled and re-weighted to obtain a complete Bayesian study over the model parameters and covariance matrix. ATAIS is the main contribution of the work. Additionally, the inverted layered importance sampling (ILIS) is presented as a possible compelling algorithm (but based on a conceptually simpler idea). 24. Automatized quantitative electrocardiography from digitized paper electrocardiograms: A new avenue for risk stratification in patients with Brugada syndrome.

[Display omitted] • We digitized the electrocardiograms (ECGs) of patients with Brugada syndrome. • We performed multi-parametric ECG quantification to assess risk in such patients. • We identified new ECG parameters independently associated with major events. Arrhythmic risk stratification is a major challenge in Brugada syndrome. Studies have evaluated risk stratification based on manually measured electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters at baseline and/or after drug challenge. To assess the predictive value of multiple ECG parameters measured automatically from digitized paper ECGs. During a prospective, multicentre cohort study that included patients with Brugada syndrome with type 1 ECG (spontaneously or drug-induced), paper ECGs were digitized and analysed. Major events were sudden cardiac death, aborted cardiac arrest and appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in the ventricular fibrillation (VF) zone. The predictive value of clinical and ECG parameters was assessed using univariable and multivariable Cox models. ECGs from 301 patients (74% male, mean age 43.1 ± 13.3 years, mean follow-up 7.1 ± 5.6 years) were analysed. Major events occurred in 6% of patients before diagnosis and 8% during follow-up. Two baseline ECG parameters were independently associated with major events: QRS prolongation in lead V1 > 113 ms (hazard ratio [HR] 3.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.72–7.09; P < 0.001) and S duration on DI > 33.5 ms (HR 3.56, 95% CI 1.52–8.31; P < 0.01). In drug-induced patients, changes in the Tpeak-Tend interval on V2 were associated with major events (HR 4.69, 95% CI 1.21–18.17; P = 0.014). Paper ECG datasets could be used for automatic quantitative ECG measurements. We confirmed the association of previously described parameters with events and identified useful new parameters. Abstract

While critical thinking is becoming gradually more important in education, memorisation of rules, procedures and facts is still predominant. Italy has undergone a moderate level of innovation over the last two decades. Despite this, rote-learning strategies appear to be the norm at secondary education level (Vincent-Lancrin et al., 2019). This paper examines whether the currently compulsory CLIL activity, with its focus on higher-order thinking skills (Coyle et al., 2010), has had a beneficial impact on learning in Italian secondary education. More specifically, teachers' current practices and students' reactions to them after the official CLIL implementation are discussed, through analysis of data collected from 1,343 respondents to a questionnaire distributed throughout the country. The findings align with the thinking-centered, integrative nature of the approach advanced by CLIL scholars, providing evidence both of the success of CLIL teacher training measures in the Italian context and of further cognitive achievements stemming from CLIL activity. 28. Pre-hospital Tourniquet Use in Adolescent and Pediatric Traumatic Hemorrhage: A National Study.

Abstract

Tourniquet placement (TP) is a crucial intervention to control hemorrhage, but limited literature exists for use in children. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of tourniquet application by different providers (Emergency Medical Services (EMS), first responder (FR), and bystanders), hypothesizing equivalent impact on outcomes for pediatric trauma patients for all providers. Data from the National EMS Information Systems (NEMSIS) 2017–2020 was used to examine patients 0–19 years old and assess the outcomes of tourniquet application. We considered demographics, procedure success, timing of TP relative to EMS arrival, revised trauma score (RTS), and improvement in acuity. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to predict initial acuity and likelihood of acuity improvement after TP, while accounting for patient and provider-related variables. 301 patients were included with a median age of 17 and 86.7 % male. TP by any provider before EMS transport arrival was associated with reduced odds of critical acuity upon EMS arrival (OR = 0.84, CI = 0.76–0.94, p = 0.003). After EMS arrival, bystander- and FR-placed tourniquets were associated with increased odds of improved acuity compared to EMS-placed tourniquets (OR = 1.90, CI = 1.06–3.41, p = 0.03). There was only one TP failure (0.43 %) in the EMS group. TP failure was associated with decreased odds of acuity improvement (OR = 0.62, CI = 0.44–0.86, p = 0.005). Early TP for pediatric traumatic hemorrhage is crucial. Failures were rare. Placement by bystanders and FR were associated with improved acuity when controlling for other factors including RTS and EMS arrival time. 29. The 2023 floods in the Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy: A retrospective qualitative investigation into response strategies and criticalities.

Abstract

In May 2023, the Emilia-Romagna Region experienced two unprecedented rainfall episodes, leading to severe flooding and landslides especially in its southernmost part, the Romagna area. This study aimed to assess the health response to the May 2023 floods in this area, by identifying the main actions undertaken in response to the floods and by highlighting criticalities and lessons learned. To achieve this objective, a retrospective qualitative case study design was chosen, and semi-structured interviews were carried out to gather in-depth information on the experiences and perspectives of 25 key informants (authorities and public administration, health management, public health, primary care, social services, hospital and emergency care system, communication, and third sector) involved in the response. The findings highlight the strain on the local health system, including service and infrastructure disruptions. The response strategies have been analysed and clustered in phases (alert and activation, coordination, communication, identification of vulnerable individuals, evacuations management, surge capacity, health service delivery, logistics, and the role of volunteers), offering a comprehensive overview of local disaster response strategies. Recommendations include enhancing interoperability of health information systems for disaster management, improving the coordination of evacuations for at-risk populations, and strengthening spontaneous volunteers' management. Abstract

The conversion of CO 2 into value-added cyclic carbonates via cycloaddition to bio-derived epoxides presents a sustainable approach for CO 2 utilization. However, the production of cyclic carbonates from bio-sources such as epoxidized vegetable oils (EVOs) have significant challenges due to the low reactivity of CO 2 and the steric hindrance of internal epoxides in these bulky substrates. Consequently, the majority of systems for CO 2 fixation to bio-based epoxides rely on homogeneous catalysis. This study investigated the conversion of epoxidized methyl oleate, a model compound for EVOs, into its corresponding cyclic carbonate using heterogeneous 4-pyrrolidinopyridine-based catalysts. The influence of various catalytic parameters, such as the halide counter anions (Cl, Br, I) and incorporated metal Lewis acid centra, was explored within the catalyst. Among the halide counter anions, bromide exhibited a superior performance, achieving 65 % conversion and 59 % cyclic carbonate yield by the end of the experiment, while the effect of various metal centra was less pronounced, with an overall improvement in the cyclic carbonate yield of less than 10 % compared to the metal-free catalyst. The efficacy of the laparoscopic approach for total gastrectomy(TG) in Western countries remains under discussion. Recently, Textbook Outcome(TO) has gained recognition as a comprehensive measure of care quality in upper gastrointestinal surgery. Although predictive factors for TO after TG are well-documented, the influence of the surgical approach requires further analysis. This study aimed to compare the TO completion rate following total gastrectomy for gastric cancer between the open(OTG) and laparoscopic(LTG) approaches.

Abstract

The subcellular localization of mRNAs plays a pivotal role in biological processes, including cell migration1-6. For instance, β-actin mRNA and its associated RNA binding protein (RBP), ZBP1/IGF2BP1, are recruited to focal adhesions (FAs), to support localized β-actin synthesis, crucial for cell migration7-9. However, whether other mRNAs and RBPs also localize at FAs remains unclear. Here, we identify hundreds of mRNAs that are enriched at FAs (FA-mRNAs). FA-mRNAs share characteristics with stress granule (SG) mRNAs and are found in ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes with the SG RBP. Mechanistically, G3BP1 binds to FA proteins in an RNA-dependent manner, and its RNA-binding and dimerization domains, essential for G3BP1 to form RNPs in SG10, are required for FA localization and cell migration. We find that G3BP1 RNPs promote cell speed by enhancing FA protein mobility and FA size. These findings suggest a previously unappreciated role for G3BP1 RNPs in regulating FA function under non-stress conditions.

34. Reporte de una experiencia de control del virus de la diarrea viral bovina en 2 tambos de Argentina aplicando herramientas de manejo, diagnóstico y vacunación

Abstract

El virus de la diarrea viral bovina (BVDV, por su sigla en inglés) ocasiona pérdidas económicas significativas en la industria ganadera internacional y en Argentina, donde circula con alta prevalencia. En condiciones de alta prevalencia, las infecciones causadas por el BVDV se controlan mediante vacunación una vez identificados y segregados los animales persistentemente infectados. En este estudio, se evaluó la factibilidad de controlar la circulación del BVDV en condiciones de campo combinando herramientas de diagnóstico, medidas de manejo y vacunación. La experiencia abarcó 2 tambos de la provincia de Santa Fe. Se utilizaron kits de ELISA comerciales para determinar la proteína NS3 (P80) o los anticuerpos contra esta proteína, RT-PCR anidada para detectar el genoma viral y seroneutralización viral para evaluar la eficacia vacunal. Antes de la intervención, la seroprevalencia promedio de los tambos fue del 58,4%, con una tasa de animales persistentemente infectados del 2,4%. Tras la segregación de los animales persistentemente infectados y la vacunación con una vacuna combinada comercial que contiene BVDV inactivado, los porcentajes de aborto disminuyeron significativamente (p<0,05), del 20,5 al 11,6% en el tambo 1 y del 34% al 23,4% en el tambo 2 durante el segundo año de la estrategia de control. La tasa de concepción aumentó del 29 al 33% en el tambo 1 durante el primer año; en el tambo 2, el aumento fue de 7 puntos durante el segundo año. La estrategia implementada logró condiciones en las que el BVDV dejó de circular. Este es el primer reporte sobre el manejo controlado del BVDV en tambos utilizando herramientas disponibles para los productores en Argentina.
