Many types of viruses directly or indirectly target the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) system, which is a central regulator of vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in physiological homeostasis, causing diverse pathologies. Other viruses have been developed into effective therapeutic tools for VEGF modulation in conditions such as cancer and eye diseases. Some viruses may alter the levels of VEGF in the pathogenesis of respiratory syndromes, or they may encode VEGF-like factors, promoting vascular disruption and angiogenesis to enable viruses' systemic spread. Oncogenic viruses may express interactive factors that perturb VEGF's functional levels or downstream signaling, which increases the neovascularization and metastasis of tumors. Furthermore, many viruses are being developed as therapeutic vectors for vascular pathologies in clinical trials. Major examples are those viral vectors that inhibit the role of VEGF in the neovascularization required for cancer progression; this is achieved through the induction of immune responses, by exposing specific peptides that block signaling or by expressing anti-VEGF and anti-VEGF receptor-neutralizing antibodies. Other viruses have been engineered into effective pro- or anti-angiogenesis multitarget vectors for neovascular eye diseases, paving the way for therapies with improved safety and minimal side effects. This article critically reviews the large body of literature on these issues, highlighting those contributions that describe the molecular mechanisms, thus expanding our understanding of the VEGF–virus interactions in disease and therapy. The efficacy of Azospirillum argentinense REC3, applied by seed inoculation, in enhancing soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) nodulation with native rhizobia, improving grain yield, and protecting against Fusarium fungi was studied. In La Cruz, Tucumán, Argentina, 23 fungal isolates were identified as F. oxysporum (2 strains), F. solani (2), and F. tucumaniae (19). Following soil infestation, only F. tucumaniae was confirmed as a phytopathogen, with REC3 inhibiting its mycelial growth. Greenhouse trials, for a duration of 30 days, showed significant reductions in disease severity (78.2%), root rot (32.3%), and disease incidence (50.9%) in plants susceptible to sudden death syndrome (SDS) when REC3 was applied. Field experiments (2018–2019; January-April) under drought stress conditions, displayed increased nodulation (37.2%) and grain yield (2077 ± 272.8 kg ha−1, p < 0.05) in REC3-treated plants compared to controls (1516 ± 272.8 kg ha−1, p < 0.05). Additionally, a low disease incidence (0.90%) was observed only in the SDS-susceptible soybean variety without REC3 treatment. Overall, the findings showed the significant potential of REC3 inoculation as a biotechnological strategy for enhancing agricultural productivity, managing diseases, and improving crop resilience under challenging environmental conditions. This integrated approach, combining the use of a partially SDS-resistant soybean variety with REC3 inoculation, showed promise in protecting soybean cultivation against SDS and other fungal diseases, thereby ensuring more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. Objective: IgA vasculitis (IgAV), previously named as Henoch–Schönlein purpura, is the most frequent systemic vasculitis in children. In adults, IgAV is less common although it is associated with more severe disease. In fact, the frequency of glomerulonephritis (referred to as IgAV nephritis) in adults is higher than in children and tends to present more severely, with around 10–30% of those affected eventually progressing to end-stage renal disease. In this review, we describe the pathophysiology, main clinical features, diagnosis of the disease, and latest clinical data regarding IgAV therapy. Methods: A narrative literature review, primarily based on articles published in PubMed, was conducted. In addition to discussing the main aspects of glucocorticoids and conventional disease-modifying drugs used in the management of IgAV, this review focuses on the latest information reported regarding biologics and potential future therapies. Results: Glucocorticoids are the first-line therapy for IgAV, especially in adults with severe manifestations. Colchicine, dapsone, and methotrexate can be useful for controlling minor manifestations. Several immunomodulatory agents, such as cyclosporine A, tacrolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil, have shown favorable results as glucocorticoid-sparing agents. Leflunomide has shown promising results but requires further study. The use of rituximab has demonstrated efficacy in reducing relapse frequency, lowering the cumulative glucocorticoid burden, and achieving long-term remission of the disease in children and adults with IgAV. Immunoglobulins and plasma exchange therapy can also be useful in difficult and life-threatening situations. Other potential therapies with encouraging results include TRF-budesonide, B-cell-directed therapy, B-cell-depleting agents, sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, endothelin receptor antagonists, and complement pathway inhibitors. Conclusions: Glucocorticoids are the first-line therapy for IgAV, especially in adults with severe manifestations. The role of various immunomodulatory therapies, such as calcineurin inhibitors and mycophenolate mofetil, remains promising, while rituximab reduces the long-term side effects of glucocorticoids and can help achieve disease remission. AbstractListeria monocytogenes, a resilient bacterium in diverse food conditions, such as refrigeration, reduced water activity and low pH, poses a significant threat to the food industry and public health. In recent years, it has been documented an increase in the antibiotic resistance of zoonotic pathogens, including L. monocytogenes. This review provides new insight into the molecular mechanisms involved in both intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance of L. monocytogenes with an emphasis on the effect of different environmental and food-related factors. It also explores the relationship of these resistance mechanisms with virulence factors. An analysis of literature data (2009–2021) was conducted to investigate statistically and graphically potential associations between specific antibiotic resistance patterns in the pathogen and food categories using an unbiased variance analysis. The results evidenced that food type had an influence on the antibiotic resistance profiles of L. monocytogenes, with meat and vegetables being the food categories exhibiting the most prevalent profiles. The frequent detection of resistance to ampicillin, penicillin, and tetracycline (non-intrinsic resistances) indicates that specific processing conditions along the food chain may induce them. Many questions remain about the impact of food chain factors (e.g. thermal treatments, cold chain, preservatives, etc.) and food type (low pH, reduced water activity, etc.) on the antibiotic resistance patterns of the pathogen, particularly concerning food-related sources, the resistance mechanisms involved (e.g. cross-protection, horizontal gene transfer, etc.), and the evolutionary processes of antibiotic-resistant microbial populations. Metagenomics, in addition to other –omics technologies (metabolomics and transcriptomics), allows a better understanding of the processes involved in the acquisition of resistance. Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between choroidal thickness (CT) and anterior scleral thickness (AST) in patients with subclinical keratoconus (SKC) and established keratoconus (KC). Methods: This single-center prospective case-control study included 97 eyes of 97 patients: 44 KC eyes, 14 SKC eyes, and 39 age- and axial length (AL)-matched healthy eyes. Using swept-source optical coherence tomography, the AST was manually measured in four directions and the CT was obtained automatically from the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to linearly reduce the dimensionality of nine CT inputs to one significant component, CT1. A multivariate model was created to evaluate the association between CT1, AST, and several ocular parameters in SKC and KC patients. Partial correlation was then performed to adjust the confounding factors and to examine the effect of AST on CT1. Results: The PCA showed that CT1 accounts for 86.54% of the total variance in the nine original CTs of the ETDRS grid. The CT1 model was associated with age, AL, and AST in the superior meridian in SKC eyes, whereas in KC eyes, it was correlated with gender, age, AL, and AST in the inferior meridian (p < 0.001). The partial correlation between CT1 and AST in the superior zone was found to be significant, positive, and strong in SKC eyes (r = 0.79, p = 0.019), whereas a significant, positive, and moderate correlation between CT1 and AST at the inferior zone (r = 0.41, p = 0.017) was observed in KC eyes. Conclusions: Choroidal tissue was significantly correlated with the anterior sclera across the vertical meridian. This relationship was observed over the superior sclera in SKC eyes, whereas in established KC, it was over the inferior sclera. These results reveal new insights regarding the interactions between the anterior and posterior structures of the KC eyes and confirm the enigma of the pathophysiology of KC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: Quitlines are known to be effective in helping people quit smoking, including those with mental health conditions. It is particularly important to address smoking in this population as the prevalence of smoking ranges from 40% to 75%. However, professionals working in quitlines often face barriers due to their limited training and resources to effectively support these smokers quit, especially if they are not mental health professionals. Therefore, training programmes should be developed to enhance their knowledge and skills in providing smoking cessation support to this vulnerable population. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: The '061 QUIT‐MENTAL study' evaluated the efficacy of a proactive telephone‐based intervention for smoking cessation among smokers with severe mental health disorders. Conducted through a quitline service in Catalonia, Spain, the study focused on training non‐mental health specialized nurses and other health professionals to provide evidence‐based interventions for promoting smoking cessation among individuals with mental health disorders. The objective of this study is to assess the changes in nurses' knowledge and readiness to treat smokers with mental health conditions, while also capturing their insights and perceptions regarding the facilitators and barriers to providing smoking cessation interventions. The training and insights of the nurses were integral to conducting this research and providing valuable information for the future sustainability of such interventions. This is particularly important as quitlines hold the potential to offer cessation support to these patients at the community level. The 061 QUIT‐MENTAL study was a pragmatic randomized controlled trial evaluating a proactive telephone‐based intervention addressed to mental health patients conducted by non‐psychiatric specialized nurses. Aim: We assessed nurses' knowledge of smoking cessation interventions addressed to this population before and after receiving training and their insights after delivering the intervention. Method: Mixed methods study: (1) Pre‐post evaluation to assess self‐reported knowledge, self‐efficacy and opinions about smoking cessation. (2) In‐depth interviews with key nurses to ascertain their perceptions regarding the impact of the training received in delivering the study intervention. Results: The training enhanced nurses' knowledge of psychological and pharmacological resources to aid these patients, as well as their ability to increase their motivation to quit. However, nurses reported difficulties in delivering population‐based interventions to individuals with mental health disorders. These challenges primarily arose from participants being hard to reach, exhibiting low motivation to quit, struggling to comprehend instructions or follow recommendations, and nurses feeling unsure about their capacity to assist individuals with mental illnesses in quitting, despite the training they received. Discussion: Despite the training and protocol designed to facilitate the delivery of the intervention, nurses faced difficulties in providing population‐based interventions to individuals with mental health disorders. Background: The utilities of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) for characterization, differential diagnosis, postoperative monitoring, and evaluation/comparison of surgical techniques in pterygium are described. Through AS-OCT, it is also possible to study the corneal astigmatic effect of pterygium. Our purpose is to study the associations between the anatomical characteristics of pterygium and the corneal topography through AS-OCT. Methods: Fifty eyes with primary pterygium in a tertiary hospital were evaluated before surgery by measuring 10 anatomical variables of pterygium and 13 topographic variables using AS-OCT (Casia 2; Tomey Corp., Nagoya, Japan). Statistical analysis was used to study the association between them. Results: Pterygium classified as flat pattern exhibited lower preoperative values of flat keratometry (K1), real flat keratometry (K1r), average keratometry (AvgK), and real average keratometry (AvgKr) compared to nodular ones. The flat pattern showed greater cylinder (CYL) and real cylinder (CLYr) values. The horizontal corneal invasion proportionally increased CYL and CYLr. Overall, larger anatomical pterygium measurements (limbus thickness (LimbusT), central pterygium thickness (CentreT), head pterygium thickness (HeadT), epithelial thickness at 1 mm (EpitT1mm), stromal thickness at 1 mm (stromT1mm), total thickness at 1 mm (TotalT1mm), total thickness at 2 mm (TotalT2mm), and total thickness at 3 mm (TotalT3mm)) resulted in lower anterior K1, K1r, AvgK, and AvgKr, and posterior K1 and AvgK values. CentreT was greater in astigmatisms against the rule than in oblique ones. Conclusions: This study demonstrates associations between preoperative topography and the NF (nodular or flat) classification of pterygium and its anatomical measurements assessed by AS-OCT. This study measured changes in healthcare professionals' (HCPs) performance in tobacco cessation intervention before and 6 months after a health system intervention. The intervention involved exposure to online training for staff and the implementation of a structured organizational change-level practice model that included some strategies, comprising establishing tobacco cessation steering groups with champions in each hospital, developing tailored protocols and guidelines within each organization, conducting on-site workshops for clinicians, and creating posters and pocket materials summarizing the intervention. Pre–post evaluation in four hospitals in Barcelona province (Catalonia, Spain). We assessed the knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and organizational factors (KABO) and the performance of each of the components of the 5As Model for Treating Tobacco Use according to a scale from 0 ("Never") to 10 ("Always") among HCPs. We performed Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for paired samples and assessed changes in performance by performing linear regression. A total of 255 HCPs completed the pre–post evaluation. All components of the 5As Model increased, with "Assist" and "Arrange a follow-up" showing the greatest improvement. Several KABO dimensions significantly increased, including individual skills (mean score: 3.3–5.7, P <.001), attitudes and beliefs (4.8–5.4, P <.001), individual commitment (5.9–6.6, P <.001), and perception of having positive organizational support (4.3–4.7, P <.001). An increase in each point in individual skills and support of the organization was associated with increased rates of 5As delivery, with the greatest associations found for "Assist" (0.60 and 0.17, respectively) and "Arrange a follow-up" (0.71 and 0.18, respectively). The intervention was successful in increasing HCPs individual skills , attitudes and beliefs , individual commitment , and perception of having positive organizational support and the performance of all components of the 5As. Future research should focus on strategies that promote organizational support, a dimension that is essential to increasing Assist and Arrange, which were less implemented at baseline. The aim of this study was to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in bone remodeling-related genes associated with disease severity and bone mineral density (BMD) in early arthritis (EA) patients. For this purpose, the genotyping of 552 SNPs located in gene regions of semaphorins 4b, 4d, 4f, DKK1, 2 and 3, sclerostin, OPG, RANK and RANKL was performed using Immunochip from Illumina Inc. in 268 patients from the Princesa Early Arthritis Register Longitudinal (PEARL) study. Measurements of BMD and disease activity were chosen as outcome variables to select SNPs of interest. The relationships of SNPs with the BMD of the forearm, lumbar spine and hip (Hologic-4500 QDR) were analyzed by linear regression adjusted for age, sex, body mass index and presence of anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPAs). The association of each SNP with activity variables was analyzed by linear regression, logistic regression or ordered logistic regression according to the variable, and multivariate models were adjusted for potentially confounding variables, such as age, sex and presence of ACPAs. These analyses showed that four SNPs located in the genes coding for RANK (TNFRSF11A) and OPG (TNFRSF11B) were significantly associated with clinical variables of severity. SNP rs1805034 located in exon 6 of TNFRSF11A, which causes a non-synonymous (A/V) mutation, showed significant association with BMD and therefore may be considered as a possible biomarker of severity in RA patients. Background/Objectives: The main purpose of this study is to determine, by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), the anatomical characteristics, both preoperatively and postoperatively, that correlate with a higher rate of pterygium recurrence after surgery with exeresis and conjunctival autograft with biological glue. Methods: A total of 50 eyes which were listed for primary pterygium surgery at an ophthalmology tertiary centre were treated with standard pterygium excision and a conjunctival autograft with tissue glue. Ten variables were measured with AS-OCT (Casia 2; Tomey Corp., Nagoya, Japan) during six control visits with all patients. Finally, statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (SPSS stadistics®, IBM®, version 21.0.0.0) for descriptive variables and R-project (The R foundation©, version 3.0.2) for the rest of the analyses, including a descriptive analysis and an inferential analysis studying prognostic factors of recurrence and their predictive capacity. Results: Among the 50 patients who underwent surgery, recurrence was detected in 8 cases (rate 16%; 95% CI: 5.8–26.2%). Most cases (n = 6) were detected 3 months after surgery. The pattern of recurrences was atrophic in two thirds of the cases; none required reintervention. Preoperative total conjunctival thickness at 3 mm was significantly increased in patients who developed recurrence. One week after surgery, epithelial and stromal thickness at 1 mm and total thickness at 3 mm proved to be useful for predicting recurrence. Both models have significant discriminant capacity. Conclusions: By imaging the graft with AS-OCT preoperatively and 7 days after surgery, the risk of future recurrence can be predicted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geocaching is an activity that involves hiding or finding treasures (geocaches) anywhere with the help of GPS or geolocation. This work consists of the design, development and evaluation of a socioeducational practice, using a mobile device as a tool and a geolocation application as an instrument. The aim of this study is to find out the impact of the implementation of an educational practice in the municipal context to raise environmental awareness and improve digital literacy using geolocation. This proposal is part of the socio-educational area in the information society, within the field of child protection, specifically in a day care centre for minors. This research is qualitative, in particular it is a multiple case study and is framed within the narrative approach. The results and conclusions show that the children and the professionals involved are satisfied with the implementation of the socio-educational practice in the municipal context, with entertainment predominating as a positive aspect. The children have acquired mainly procedural knowledge, with the support of digital technology. Finally, it is worth mentioning the impact on motivation and conflict resolution. A 25-year-old Caucasic female was referred to our clinic after suffering from infectious keratitis in the right eye for a month. The patient was a contact lens user and had no history of ocular trauma. Furthermore, the patient did not report any relevant antecedent. The main complaint was intense photophobia and pain. Infectious keratitis remains one of the main complications of contact lens wear and can become a therapeutic challenge in some patients. Although the most frequent causal agent is bacterial, other causes such as herpes virus, Acanthamoeba or fungi should be considered when antimicrobial therapy does not work as expected clinically. Fungal keratitis normally appears on previously damaged corneas, but it can also develop in contact lens wearers. Beauveria bassiana is an unusual pathogen which has been diagnosed more frequently lately per the clinical reports in the last 30 years, so it can be included in the diagnostic scheme when a fungal keratitis is suspected. In clinical management, AS-OCT may be a functional tool to assess the evolution and monitor the response to microbial agents and surgery. Although more studies are needed, some characteristic features have been described and can help to diagnose a fungal keratitis against other infections. AS-OCT can also play an important role in monitoring the corneal scarring after the keratitis episode, and it may be useful to plan post-infection therapy for visual rehabilitation. Introduction: The use of emerging tobacco and nicotine products affects tobacco use behaviors among college students. Thus, we aimed to examine transitions in tobacco use patterns and identify their predictors among smokers in a cohort of nursing students in Catalonia (Spain). Methods: We conducted a prospective longitudinal study of Catalan nursing students between 2015–2016 and 2018–2019. We examined transitions in tobacco use patterns between baseline and follow-up among smokers from: 1) daily to nondaily smoking, 2) non-daily to daily smoking, 3) cigarette-only use to polytobacco use, 4) poly-tobacco use to cigarette-only use, 5) between products, 6) reducing consumption by ≥5 cigarettes per day (CPD); and 7) quitting smoking. We applied a Generalized Linear Model with a log link (Poisson regression) and robust variance to identify predictors of reducing cigarette consumption by ≥5 CPD and quitting smoking, obtaining both crude and adjusted (APR) prevalence ratios and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Among daily smokers at baseline, 12.1% transitioned to non-daily smoking at follow-up, while 36.2% of non-daily smokers shifted to daily smoking. Among cigarette-only users, 14.2% transitioned to poly-tobacco use, while 48.4% of polytobacco users switched to exclusive cigarette use. Among all smokers (daily and non-daily smokers), 60.8% reduced their cigarette consumption by ≥5 CPD and 28.3% quit smoking. Being a non-daily smoker (APR=0.33; 95% CI 0.19–0.55) and having lower nicotine dependence (APR=0.78; 95% CI 0.64–0.96) were inversely associated with reducing cigarette consumption, while being a non-daily smoker (APR=1.19; 95% CI: 1.08–1.31) was directly associated with quitting smoking. Conclusions: Nursing students who smoked experienced diverse transitions in tobacco use patterns over time. This article discusses the synthesis and characterization of rare-earth-metal complexes using ligands that adhere to the CHON principle. The complexes were studied using various spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, as well as computational studies. The tren-based ligands showed lower ion pairing compared to their SP-analogues, and exhibited a greater propensity to complex with lutetium. Selectivity studies showed that the ligands favored complexation with lutetium and samarium, and py3tren was found to be the most selective ligand. In this study, we report on the synthesis of ternary photocatalysts comprising TiO2/SnO2/g-C3N4 for the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water. SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol–gel method, while g-C3N4 was obtained through melamine calcination. Commercial TiO2 and SnO2 nanopowders were also used. The heterojunctions were synthesized via the wet impregnation method. The photocatalysts were characterized via various techniques, including XRD, TEM, STEM, FTIR, N2 adsorption, UV–Vis DR, and hole tests. Photocatalytic degradation tests of CIP were carried out under UV, visible, and solar radiation. The P25/npA/g-C3N4 (90/10) material exhibited the best performance, achieving CIP degradation of over 97%. The synthesized materials demonstrated excellent initial adsorption of CIP, around 30%, which facilitated subsequent degradation. Notably, the CIP photocatalytic degradation tests performed under solar radiation showed a synergistic effect between the base materials and carbon nitride in highly energetic environments. These results highlight the effectiveness of ternary photocatalysts TiO2/SnO2/g-C3N4 for CIP degradation, particularly under solar radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel mechanisms of COVID-19 vaccines raised concern about their potential immunogenicity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) undergoing immunomodulatory treatments. We designed a retrospective single-center study to investigate their effectiveness and safety in this population, analyzing data from the first vaccination program (December 2020–October 2021). Inclusion criteria were availability of post-vaccination serology and a minimum subsequent follow-up of 6 months. Binding antibody units (BAU/mL) ≥ 7.1 defined an adequate serological response. Post-vaccine COVID-19 incidence and its timing since vaccination, adverse events (AEs), and RA flares were recorded. Adjusted logistic and linear multivariate regression analyses were carried out to identify factors associated with vaccine response. We included 118 patients (87.2% women, age 65.4 ± 11.6 years, evolution 12.0 ± 9.6 years), of whom 95.8% had a complete vaccination schedule. Adequate humoral immunogenicity was achieved in 88.1% of patients and was associated with previous COVID-19 and mRNA vaccines, whereas smoking, aCCP, age, and DMARDs exerted a negative impact. Post-vaccine COVID-19 occurred in 18.6% of patients, a median of 6.5 months after vaccination. Vaccine AE (19.5%) and RA flares (1.7%) were mostly mild and inversely associated with age. Our results suggest that COVID-19 vaccines induce adequate humoral immunogenicity, with an acceptable safety profile in RA patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
