In this study, several materials are presented as modifiers of the screen-printed carbon electrodes with the aim of developing new sensing platforms for the voltammetric analysis of drugs. Specifically, Clotiapine and Sulfamethoxazole were selected as models for antipsychotics and antibiotics, respectively. Different nanostructures were studied as modifiers, including both transition metals and carbon-based materials. Moreover, biochar and two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were tested as well. The NH2-MIL-125(Ti) MOF showed an 80% improvement in the analytical signal of Sulfamethoxazole, but it partially overlapped with an additional signal associated with the loss of the MOF ligand. For this reason, several immobilization strategies were tested, but none of them met the requirements for the development of a sensor for this analyte. Conversely, carbon nanotubes and the NH2-MIL-101(Fe) MOF were successfully applied for the analysis of Clotiapine in the medicine Etumine®, with RSD below 2% and relative errors that did not exceed 9% in any case, which demonstrates the precision and accuracy achieved with the tested modifications. Despite these promising results, it was not possible to lower the limits of detection and quantification, so in this sense further investigation must be performed to increase the sensitivity of the developed sensors.

Over the past few decades, peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have garnered substantial interest in the field of organic decontamination. The copper (Cu)/PMS system is intriguing due to its diverse activation pathways and has been extensively employed for the clearance of refractory organic pollutants in water. This article is designed to offer a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in Cu-based catalysts such as single-metal and mixed-metal catalysts aimed at treating recalcitrant pollutants, highlighting PMS activation. Subsequently, investigative methodologies for assessing PMS activation with copper-based catalysts are reviewed and summarized. Then, the implications of pH, PMS and catalytic agent concentrations, anions, and natural organic matter are also addressed. The combination of Cu-based catalyst/PMS systems with other advanced oxidation technologies is also discussed. Following that, the degradation mechanisms in the Cu-based catalyst-activated PMS system are considered and synopsized. Lastly, potential future research avenues are proposed to enhance the technology and offer support for developing of economically viable materials based on copper for activating PMS.

Materials based on polymer hydrogels have demonstrated potential as innovative Fenton catalysts for treating water. However, developing these polymer-supported catalysts with robust stability presents a significant challenge. This paper explores the development and application of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the environmental remediation of wastewater, emphasizing the enhancement of metal incorporation into catalysts for improved efficiency. The study begins with an introduction to the heterogeneous Fenton process and its relevance to wastewater treatment. It further delves into the specifics of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, focusing on iron oxide, copper complexes/nanoparticles, and ruthenium as key components. The synthesis methods employed to prepare these catalysts are discussed, highlighting the innovative approaches to achieve substantial metal incorporation. Operational parameters such as catalyst dosage, pollutant concentration, and the effect of pH on the process efficiency are thoroughly examined. The catalytic performance is evaluated, providing insights into the effectiveness of these catalysts in degrading pollutants. Recent developments in the field are reviewed, showcasing advancements in catalyst design and application. The study also addresses the stability and reusability of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, critical factors for their practical application in environmental remediation. Environmental applications are explored, demonstrating the potential of these catalysts in addressing various pollutants. The Conclusions offers future perspectives, underlining the ongoing challenges and opportunities in the field, and the importance of further research to enhance the efficacy and sustainability of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for wastewater treatment.
