Abstract Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare and unpredictable complication after correction spine surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The management of this condition is poorly investigated, with controversial outcomes. This investigation systematically reviewed current evidence on pathogenesis, risk factors, management, and outcomes of SMAS following correction spine surgery for AIS. The present systematic review was conducted according to the 2020 PRISMA statement. All the included investigations reported SMAS presentation following scoliosis correction surgery in AIS. 29 articles with 61 eligible patients were included in this review. The mean age of the patients was 15.8 ± 7.2 years. The mean weight was 45.3 ± 8.0 kg, the mean height 159.6 ± 13.6 cm, and the mean BMI 16.5 ± 2.9 kg/m2. The mean duration of the treatment for SMAS was 21.6 ± 10.3 days. The mean interval between spine surgery and symptoms of SAMS was 69 days, with high between-studies variability (3 days to 4 years). Prompt identification of risk factors and an early diagnosis are necessary to manage SMAS and reduce the risk of complications. Additional investigations are required to establish risk factors and diagnostic criteria. Level of evidence Level IV, systematic review.

The genetic diversity of the ancient autochthonous olive trees on the Maltese islands and the relationship with the wild forms growing in marginal areas of the island (57 samples), as well as with the most widespread cultivars in the Mediterranean region (150 references), were investigated by genetic analysis with 10 SSR markers. The analysis revealed a high genetic diversity of Maltese germplasm, totaling 84 alleles and a Shannon information index (I) of 1.08. All samples from the upper and the lower part of the crown of the Bidni trees belonged to the same genotype, suggesting that there was no secondary top-grafting of the branches. The Bidni trees showed close relationships with the local wild germplasm, suggesting that the oleaster population played a role in the selection of the Bidni variety. Genetic similarities were also found between Maltese cultivars and several Italian varieties including accessions putatively resistant to the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which has recently emerged in the Apulia region (Italy) and has caused severe epidemics on olive trees over the last decade.

Background: The use of opioids for pain is linked to an increased risk of developing opioid use disorder, and has resulted in the emergence of the opioid crisis over the last few years., Aim: The systematic review question is "How does the use of opioid medications in pain management, compared with non-opioid medications, affect pain intensity over the short, intermediate, and long-term in adults with acute traumatic pain?"., Methods: The protocol was prospectively registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews: CRD42021279639. Medline and Google Scholar were electronically searched for controlled peer-reviewed studies published in full, with the PICO framework: P: Adult patients with traumatic injuries, I: Opioid medications, C: Non-opioid medications, O: A minimum clinically important difference (MCID) in pain., Results: After full-text screening, we included 14 studies in the qualitative synthesis. Of these 14 studies, 12 were randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and 2 were pseudo-RCTs with a total of 2347 patients enrolled. There was heterogeneity in both medication utilized and outcome in these studies; only two studies were homogeneous regarding the type of study conducted, the opioid used, its comparator, and the outcome explored. The MCID was evaluated in 8 studies, while in 6 studies, any measured pain reduction was considered as an outcome. In 11 cases, the setting of care was the Emergency Department; in 2 cases, care occurred out-of-hospital; and in one case, the setting was not well-specified. The included studies were found to have a low-moderate risk of bias., Conclusion: Non-opioids can be considered an alternative to opioids for short-term pain management of acute musculoskeletal injury.
