It is debated whether primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) and progressive agrammatic aphasia (PAA) belong to the same clinical spectrum, traditionally termed non-fluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA), or exist as two completely distinct syndromic entities with specific pathologic/prognostic correlates. We analysed speech, language and disease severity features in a comprehensive cohort of patients with progressive motor speech impairment and/or agrammatism to ascertain evidence of naturally occurring, clinically meaningful non-overlapping syndromic entities (e.g. PPAOS and PAA) in our data. We also assessed if data-driven latent clinical dimensions with aetiologic/prognostic value could be identified. We included 98 participants, 43 of whom had an autopsy-confirmed neuropathological diagnosis. Speech pathologists assessed motor speech features indicative of dysarthria and apraxia of speech (AOS). Quantitative expressive/receptive agrammatism measures were obtained and compared with healthy controls. Baseline and longitudinal disease severity was evaluated using the Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB). We investigated the data's clustering tendency and cluster stability to form robust symptom clusters and employed principal component analysis to extract data-driven latent clinical dimensions (LCD). The longitudinal CDR-SB change was estimated using linear mixed-effects models. Of the participants included in this study, 93 conformed to previously reported clinical profiles (75 with AOS and agrammatism, 12 PPAOS and six PAA). The remaining five participants were characterized by non-fluent speech, executive dysfunction and dysarthria without apraxia of speech or frank agrammatism. No baseline clinical features differentiated between frontotemporal lobar degeneration neuropathological subgroups. The Hopkins statistic demonstrated a low cluster tendency in the entire sample (0.45 with values near 0.5 indicating random data). Cluster stability analyses showed that only two robust subgroups (differing in agrammatism, executive dysfunction and overall disease severity) could be identified. Three data-driven components accounted for 71% of the variance [(i) severity-agrammatism; (ii) prominent AOS; and (iii) prominent dysarthria]. None of these data-driven LCDs allowed an accurate prediction of neuropathology. The severity-agrammatism component was an independent predictor of a faster CDR-SB increase in all the participants. Higher dysarthria severity, reduced words per minute and expressive and receptive agrammatism severity at baseline independently predicted accelerated disease progression. Our findings indicate that PPAOS and PAA, rather than exist as completely distinct syndromic entities, constitute a clinical continuum. In our cohort, splitting the nfvPPA spectrum into separate clinical phenotypes did not improve clinical-pathological correlations, stressing the need for new biological markers and consensus regarding updated terminology and clinical classification.

The non-fluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome primarily defined by the presence of apraxia of speech (AoS) and/or expressive agrammatism. In addition, many patients exhibit dysarthria and/or receptive agrammatism. This leads to substantial phenotypic variation within the speech-language domain across individuals and time, in terms of both the specific combination of symptoms as well as their severity. How to resolve such phenotypic heterogeneity in nfvPPA is a matter of debate. 'Splitting' views propose separate clinical entities: 'primary progressive apraxia of speech' when AoS occurs in the absence of expressive agrammatism, 'progressive agrammatic aphasia' (PAA) in the opposite case, and 'AOS + PAA' when mixed motor speech and language symptoms are clearly present. While therapeutic interventions typically vary depending on the predominant symptom (e.g. AoS versus expressive agrammatism), the existence of behavioural, anatomical and pathological overlap across these phenotypes argues against drawing such clear-cut boundaries. In the current study, we contribute to this debate by mapping behaviour to brain in a large, prospective cohort of well characterized patients with nfvPPA (n = 104). We sought to advance scientific understanding of nfvPPA and the neural basis of speech-language by uncovering where in the brain the degree of MRI-based atrophy is associated with inter-patient variability in the presence and severity of AoS, dysarthria, expressive agrammatism or receptive agrammatism. Our cross-sectional examination of brain-behaviour relationships revealed three main observations. First, we found that the neural correlates of AoS and expressive agrammatism in nfvPPA lie side by side in the left posterior inferior frontal lobe, explaining their behavioural dissociation/association in previous reports. Second, we identified a 'left-right' and 'ventral-dorsal' neuroanatomical distinction between AoS versus dysarthria, highlighting (i) that dysarthria, but not AoS, is significantly influenced by tissue loss in right-hemisphere motor-speech regions; and (ii) that, within the left hemisphere, dysarthria and AoS map onto dorsally versus ventrally located motor-speech regions, respectively. Third, we confirmed that, within the large-scale grammar network, left frontal tissue loss is preferentially involved in expressive agrammatism and left temporal tissue loss in receptive agrammatism. Our findings thus contribute to define the function and location of the epicentres within the large-scale neural networks vulnerable to neurodegenerative changes in nfvPPA. We propose that nfvPPA be redefined as an umbrella term subsuming a spectrum of speech and/or language phenotypes that are closely linked by the underlying neuroanatomy and neuropathology.

Prior research has revealed distinctive patterns of impaired language abilities across the three variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA): nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA), logopenic (lvPPA) and semantic (svPPA). However, little is known about whether, and to what extent, non-verbal cognitive abilities, such as processing speed, are impacted in PPA patients. This is because neuropsychological tests typically contain linguistic stimuli and require spoken output, being therefore sensitive to verbal deficits in aphasic patients. The aim of this study is to investigate potential differences in processing speed between PPA patients and healthy controls, and among the three PPA variants, using a brief non-verbal tablet-based task (Match) modeled after the WAIS-III digit symbol coding test, and to determine its neural correlates. Here, we compared performance on the Match task between PPA patients (n = 61) and healthy controls (n = 59) and across the three PPA variants. We correlated performance on Match with voxelwise gray and white matter volumes. We found that lvPPA and nfvPPA patients performed significantly worse on Match than healthy controls and svPPA patients. Worse performance on Match across PPA patients was associated with reduced gray matter volume in specific parts of the left middle frontal gyrus, superior parietal lobule, and precuneus, and reduced white matter volume in the left parietal lobe. To conclude, our behavioral findings reveal that processing speed is differentially impacted across the three PPA variants and provide support for the potential clinical utility of a tabled-based task (Match) to assess non-verbal cognition. In addition, our neuroimaging findings confirm the importance of a set of fronto-parietal regions that previous research has associated with processing speed and executive control. Finally, our behavioral and neuroimaging findings combined indicate that differences in processing speed are largely explained by the unequal distribution of atrophy in these fronto-parietal regions across the three PPA variants.

Abstract Background Lengthening of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) is performed to address various forefoot pathologies. The retraction of this tendon is strongly associated with the Hallux Abductus Valgus (HAV) deformity. Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) lengthening of the EHL is carried out in combination with other surgical techniques for HAV bone realignment. It is performed without ischemia, using local anesthesia and sedation if required by the patient. One of the advantages of this technique is immediate ambulation with a postoperative shoe without the need for a cast. The objective of the research was to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of the minimally invasive technique for lengthening the tendon in patients with HAV. Materials and methods The procedures were performed on 11 fresh cryopreserved cadaveric feet. HAV surgery was performed through dorsomedial and dorsolateral portals for Reverdin-Isham, Akin and adductor tenotomy. In addition, EHL tendon elongation was performed using the Beaver 67 MIS scalpel through an incomplete zigzag tenotomy. The specimens used did not present any type of disease nor had they undergone previous surgeries that could affect the technique. First, the plantar flexion of the metatarsophalangeal joint was measured with a goniometer to establish the degrees of this joint before proceeding with the technique, the tenotomy was performed and remeasured and finally the osteotomy was performed. In addition, an anatomical dissection of cadaveric specimens was performed and various anatomical and surgical relationships were analyzed and measured. Results The data indicate that, after performing zigzag tenotomy, there is an average improvement of 13.91 degrees in plantar flexion. Conclusions The study confirms the effectiveness and safety of elongating the extensor hallucis longus tendon of the hallux using minimally invasive surgery. The zigzag technique for tendon elongation may be considered a viable minimally invasive treatment option for addressing tendon hyperextension in patients with HAV.

Clinical infection and death caused by bluetongue virus infection has been reported in the Eurasian lynx. Bluetongue virus surveillance in the Iberian lynx revealed widespread and repeated exposure to serotypes 1 and 4 in wild and captive populations of this species. This exposure is possibly from a spillover event from sympatric ruminants.

Abstract Background Apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, is critical for the development and homeostasis of the immune system. Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy, approved for hematologic cancers, retains several limitations and challenges associated with ex vivo manipulation, including CAR T-cell susceptibility to apoptosis. Therefore, strategies to improve T-cell survival and persistence are required. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) exhibit immunoregulatory and tissue-restoring potential. We have previously shown that the transfer of umbilical cord MSC (UC-MSC)-derived mitochondrial (MitoT) prompts the genetic reprogramming of CD3+ T cells towards a Treg cell lineage. The potency of T cells plays an important role in effective immunotherapy, underscoring the need for improving their metabolic fitness. In the present work, we evaluate the effect of MitoT on apoptotis of native T lymphocytes and engineered CAR-T cells. Methods We used a cell-free approach using artificial MitoT (Mitoception) of UC-MSC derived MT to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) followed by RNA-seq analysis of CD3+ MitoTpos and MitoTneg sorted cells. Target cell apoptosis was induced with Staurosporine (STS), and cell viability was evaluated with Annexin V/7AAD and TUNEL assays. Changes in apoptotic regulators were assessed by flow cytometry, western blot, and qRT-PCR. The effect of MitoT on 19BBz CAR T-cell apoptosis in response to electroporation with a non-viral transposon-based vector was assessed with Annexin V/7AAD. Results Gene expression related to apoptosis, cell death and/or responses to different stimuli was modified in CD3+ T cells after Mitoception. CD3+MitoTpos cells were resistant to STS-induced apoptosis compared to MitoTneg cells, showing a decreased percentage in apoptotic T cells as well as in TUNEL+ cells. Additionally, MitoT prevented the STS-induced collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) levels, decreased caspase-3 cleavage, increased BCL2 transcript levels and BCL-2-related BARD1 expression in FACS-sorted CD3+ T cells. Furthermore, UC-MSC-derived MitoT reduced both early and late apoptosis in CAR-T cells following electroporation, and exhibited an increasing trend in cytotoxic activity levels. Conclusions Artificial MitoT prevents STS-induced apoptosis of human CD3+ T cells by interfering with the caspase pathway. Furthermore, we observed that MitoT confers protection to apoptosis induced by electroporation in MitoTpos CAR T-engineered cells, potentially improving their metabolic fitness and resistance to environmental stress. These results widen the physiological perspective of organelle-based therapies in immune conditions while offering potential avenues to enhance CAR-T treatment outcomes where their viability is compromised.

Abstract AQP4 is expressed in the endfeet membranes of subpial and perivascular astrocytes and in the ependymal cells that line the ventricular system. The sporadic appearance of obstructive congenital hydrocephalus (OCHC) has been observed in the offspring of AQP4−/− mice (KO) due to stenosis of Silvio’s aqueduct. Here, we explore whether the lack of AQP4 expression leads to abnormal development of ependymal cells in the aqueduct of mice. We compared periaqueductal samples from wild-type and KO mice. The microarray-based transcriptome analysis reflected a large number of genes with differential expression (809). Gene sets (GS) associated with ependymal development, ciliary function and the immune system were specially modified qPCR confirmed reduced expression in the KO mice genes: (i) coding for transcription factors for ependymal differentiation (Rfx4 and FoxJ1), (ii) involved in the constitution of the central apparatus of the axoneme (Spag16 and Hydin), (iii) associated with ciliary assembly (Cfap43, Cfap69 and Ccdc170), and (iv) involved in intercellular junction complexes of the ependyma (Cdhr4). By contrast, genes such as Spp1, Gpnmb, Itgax, and Cd68, associated with a Cd11c-positive microglial population, were overexpressed in the KO mice. Electron microscopy and Immunofluorescence of vimentin and γ-tubulin revealed a disorganized ependyma in the KO mice, with changes in the intercellular complex union, unevenly orientated cilia, and variations in the planar cell polarity of the apical membrane. These structural alterations translate into reduced cilia beat frequency, which might alter cerebrospinal fluid movement. The presence of CD11c + microglia cells in the periaqueductal zone of mice during the first postnatal week is a novel finding. In AQP4−/− mice, these cells remain present around the aqueduct for an extended period, showing peak expression at P11. We propose that these cells play an important role in the normal development of the ependyma and that their overexpression in KO mice is crucial to reduce ependyma abnormalities that could otherwise contribute to the development of obstructive hydrocephalus.

Los programas de formación del profesorado universitario incluyen la enseñanza de la reflexión como medio para comprender y gestionar las situaciones de la propia práctica en el aula. Si bien el estudio de la enseñanza de la reflexión ha sido abordado ampliamente en la literatura, todavía resulta poco conocido cómo los formadores de dichos programas enseñan a reflexionar al mismo tiempo que abordan contenidos psico educativos sobre la enseñanza y aprendizaje en educación superior. En este estudio se aborda esta problemática centrando el análisis en las representaciones que los formadores del profesorado universitario tienen sobre la enseñanza de la reflexión, sus finalidades y características. Se entrevistó a 12 formadores de programas implementados en universidades chilenas de diferente composición y distribuidas a lo largo de todo el país. El análisis de contenido de las entrevistas mostró diversidad de enfoques y propuestas de implementación de la enseñanza de la reflexión por parte de los formadores. Se identificaron dos grandes finalidades en la enseñanza de la reflexión: mejorar la comprensión de la práctica e innovarla. Aunque en ambos casos los formadores utilizaron la experiencia de los docentes como punto central para la enseñanza de la reflexión; también se identificaron algunas diferencias en el uso del conocimiento académico. Además, los formadores se enfocaron mayoritariamente en el cuestionamiento, problematización y resolución de la práctica en análisis de casos, más que en la comprensión en profundidad de situaciones de la práctica. En suma, el estudio aporta resultados para la comprensión y mejora de la formación de la reflexión en la educación superior.

Abstract This systematic review and meta-analysis addresses the effects of minimally invasive surgical techniques, specifically the Reverdin Isham osteotomy, on functional and radiological outcomes in patients with moderate Hallux Valgus, a common foot deformity. The review included randomized and non-randomized controlled trials, as well as case reports, assessing the osteotomy in adults with moderate to severe Hallux Valgus. Searches were conducted in electronic databases such as MEDLINE and Web of Science up until July 2023, and the Joanna Briggs Institute’s critical appraisal tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Meta-analytical analyses employed a random-effects model with small-sample correction, presenting results as standardized mean differences and mean differences with 95% confidence intervals. Seven studies involving 554 patients and 643 operated feet were included, showing significant improvements in AOFAS scores (an average improvement of 36 points from 28.61 to 45.16) and reductions in radiological angles such as the distal metatarsal angle and hallux valgus angle post-surgery (IMA improved by − 3.07° from − 4.68 to − 1.46, DMAA by − 6.12° from − 9.52 to − 2.71, and HVangle by − 15.27° from − 17.98 to − 12.57). Despite these positive outcomes, most studies exhibited risks of bias and other methodological limitations, impacting the generalizability of the results. Overall, the findings highlight the efficacy of the Reverdin Isham osteotomy in improving both functional and radiological parameters in patients with moderate Hallux Valgus, although further research is warranted to solidify these results. No specific funding was received for this study, and the protocol was registered on PROSPERO with the number CRD-42023445886.

A multivariate nutritional analysis indicated that the consumption of erucic acid-rich food, a fatty acid (FA) found primarily in rapeseed and mustard oil, was positively correlated with higher counts of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Furthermore, we showed Lactobacillus johnsonii N6.2, as well as other species of LAB tested from the former Lactobacillus genus, were able to efficiently use erucic acid (EA) as the source of FA. In this work, we identified significant changes induced in the FA profiles of L. johnsonii cultured with EA as the source of FA. We performed global transcriptomics to identify genes and pathways involved in EA utilization. It was found that L. johnsonii incorporates external fatty acids via a FakA/FakB and the plsX/plsY/plsC pathway for phosphatidic acid synthesis. It was found that cells grown in MRS with EA (MRS-E) significantly upregulated fakB2 and fakB4 when compared to cells grown in standard MRS with tween 80 as the source of FA. Additionally, in MRS-E, L. johnsonii N6.2 induced the expression of plsY2, plsC2 and plsC4 while the expression of pslX was constitutive during short term EA exposure. LC–MS analyses revealed that L. johnsonii N6.2 rapidly incorporates EA and synthesizes a variety of long chain fatty acids, including the health-relevant omega-9 monounsaturated fatty acids such as nervonic and gondoic acids.

Background Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is an autosomal dominant cardiac disease. The mechanisms that determine its variable expressivity are poorly understood. Epigenetics could play a crucial role in bridging the gap between genotype and phenotype by orchestrating the interplay between the environment and the genome regulation. In this study we aimed to establish a possible correlation between the peripheral blood DNA methylation patterns and left ventricular hypertrophy severity in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, evaluating the potential impact of lifestyle variables and providing a biological context to the observed changes. Methods and Results Methylation data were obtained from peripheral blood samples (Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip arrays). We employed multiple pair‐matched models to extract genomic positions whose methylation correlates with the degree of left ventricular hypertrophy in 3 monozygotic twin pairs carrying the same founder pathogenic variant (MYBPC3 p.Gly263Ter). This model enables the isolation of the environmental influence, beyond age, on DNA methylation changes by removing the genetic background. Our results revealed a more anxious personality among more severely affected individuals. We identified 56 differentially methylated positions that exhibited moderate, proportional changes in methylation associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. These differentially methylated positions were enriched in regions regulated by repressor histone marks and tended to cluster at genes involved in left ventricular hypertrophy development, such as HOXA5, TRPC3, UCN3, or PLSCR2, suggesting that changes in peripheral blood may reflect myocardial alterations. Conclusions We present a unique pair‐matched model, based on 3 monozygotic twin pairs carrying the same founder pathogenic variant and different phenotypes. This study provides further evidence of the pivotal role of epigenetics in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy variable expressivity.

El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar el rendimiento físico y técnico-táctico entre posiciones de juego en partidos oficiales FIFA en jugadoras de fútbol de elite. Se analizaron un total de 39 partidos oficiales FIFA (31 amistosos internacionales, 3 de Mundial de Francia 2019, 2 repechaje olímpico y 3 juegos olímpicos 2021) en 23 jugadoras de campo divididas en 5 defensas centrales (DFC), 9 defensas laterales (DFL), 5 mediocampistas (MC) y 4 delanteras (DL) de un equipo nacional de fútbol de elite. Edad = 27 ± 3.4 años; estatura = 162.4 ± 4.3 cm, masa corporal = 59.5 ± 4.6 kg. Las variables de estudio consideraron aspectos físicos como la distancia total (DT), distancia a alta intensidad (DAI), número de piques (NP), velocidad máxima (VM), Playerload (PL), número de aceleraciones (AC) y desaceleraciones (DES) y desde los aspectos técnico-tácticos se analizó la fase ofensiva (es decir, en posesión del balón) número de pases (NPA), número de pases efectivos (NPAE) y porcentaje de pases efectivos (%PPAE). Por el contrario, en la fase defensiva (es decir, sin posesión del balón) número de duelos (NDU), número de duelos efectivos (NDUE) y porcentaje de duelos efectivos (%DUE). Los resultados del estudio en cuanto a las variables físicas DT, PL, AC y DES mostraron diferencias significativas (p < .05) con un tamaño del efecto grande y en el desempeño técnico-táctico NPA, NPAE, NDU y PDUE mostraron diferencias significativas (p < .05) con un tamaño de efecto grande entre las posiciones de juego. La principal conclusión es que la posición de defensa central presentó una menor cantidad de distancia total, pero mayor cantidad de duelos ganados y pases efectivos en comparación con el resto de posiciones. Por lo tanto, existen diferencias físicas y técnico-tácticas entre posiciones de juego.

Southwest Spain’s Río Tinto is a stressful acidic microbial habitat with a noticeably high concentration of toxic heavy metals. Nevertheless, it has an unexpected degree of eukaryotic diversity in its basin, with a high diversity of fungal saprotrophs. Although some studies on the eukaryotic diversity in Rio Tinto have been published, none of them used molecular methodologies to describe the fungal diversity and taxonomic affiliations that emerge along the river in different seasons. The aim of the present study was to isolate and describe the seasonal diversity of the fungal community in the Río Tinto basin and its correlation with the physicochemical parameters existing along the river’s course. The taxonomic affiliation of 359 fungal isolates, based on the complete internal transcribed spacer DNA sequences, revealed a high degree of diversity, identifying species belonging primarily to the phylum Ascomycota, but representatives of the Basidiomycota and Mucoromycota phyla were also present. In total, 40 representative isolates along the river were evaluated for their tolerance to toxic heavy metals. Some of the isolates were able to grow in the presence of 1000 mM of Cu2+, 750 mM of As5+ and Cd2+, and 100 mM of Co2+, Ni2+, and Pb2+.

Abstract Recently, Lactobacillus johnsonii N6.2-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) were shown to reduce apoptosis in human beta cell lines and stimulate insulin secretion in human islets. Our goal was to identify a physiologically relevant environmental condition that induces a hypervesiculation phenotype in L. johnsonii N6.2 and to evaluate if transcriptional changes are involved in this process. Culturing this strain in the presence of 0.2% bovine bile, which mimics a stressor encountered by the bacterium in the small intestine, resulted in approximately a 100-fold increase in EVs relative to cells grown in media without bile. Whole transcriptome analysis of cells grown with bile revealed upregulation of several peptidoglycan hydrolases as well as several genes involved in fatty acid utilization. These results suggest that the hypervesiculation phenotype may be the result of increased cell wall turnover combined with increased accumulation of phospholipids, in agreement with our previous proteomic and lipidomics results. Additionally, EVs isolated from L. johnsonii N6.2 grown in presence of bile maintained their immunomodulatory properties in host-derived βlox5 pancreatic and THP-1 macrophage cell lines. Our findings suggest that in L. johnsonii N6.2 vesiculogenesis is significantly impacted by the expression of cell wall modifying enzymes and proteins utilized for exogenous fatty acid uptake that are regulated at the transcriptional level. Furthermore, this data suggests that vesiculogenesis could be stimulated in vivo using small molecules thereby maximizing the beneficial interactions between bacteria and their hosts.

Introduction Therapeutic exercise has an important role in the population living with cancer as it improves function and quality of life and reduces the symptoms of cancer treatment. There is little clinical evidence on the effects of hypopressive exercise in women with gynecological cancer. Objective Evaluate the effects of 4 weeks of hypopressive exercise associated with muscle strength training and aerobic exercises on fatigue, urinary incontinence symptoms, sexual function, and quality of life in women treated for gynecological cancer compared to a group that will perform conventional training. Methods This randomized, single-blinded clinical trial study is set in the Clinical Research Laboratory, Department of Kinesiotherapy, at a Chilean University. Patients will be randomly assigned to an experimental group of hypopressive exercises associated with muscle strength training and aerobic exercises or a control group of muscle strength training and aerobic exercises. Twelve tele-rehabilitation sessions will be performed. Women over 18 years of age with gynecologic cancer who have been prescribed radiotherapy or chemotherapy will participate. Fatigue, quality of life, urinary incontinence symptoms, and sexual function will be assessed before and after the intervention. Expected results The results of this clinical trial have important implications for specific treatment for the cancer population and generate new techniques in the practice of oncology-specialized kinesiologists. Hypopressive exercise is expected to reduce incontinence symptoms due to neuromuscular activation of the pelvic floor muscles. However, more studies are needed to confirm the beneficial effects of hypopressive exercises in face-to-face or remote rehabilitation.

IntroductionCreativity is a fundamental competence that manifests itself in various domains of knowledge, including verbal creativity. The main aim of this study was to identify indicators of verbal creativity for the assessment of three writing tasks.MethodsSixteen multidisciplinary and international creativity experts participated in a two-stage Delphi panel. The administered questionnaire asked about the measurement or non-measurement of eight indicators of verbal creative thinking in three tasks: problem posing, creative idea generation, and idea improvement. Originality is the most important indicator of creativity. The indicators identified in the first task were fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, and sensitivity to problems. The second task measures flexibility, originality, elaboration, opacity, and dynamic integration. In the third task, fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, dynamic integration, and refinement of ideas are considered.ResultsThe results of this study are key to progress in the field of measuring verbal creative thinking.DiscussionThe identification of indicators of the construct called verbal creativity allows the determination of its components in order to be able to estimate the creative potential in this specific domain.

Abstract Background The ‘FAST‐forward’, study published in April 2020, demonstrated the effectiveness of an extremely hypofractionated radiotherapy schedule, delivering the total radiation dose in five sessions over the course of 1 week. We share our department's experience regarding patients treated with this regimen in real‐world clinical settings, detailing outcomes related to short‐term toxicity and efficacy. Methods A descriptive observational study was conducted on 160 patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Between July 2020 and December 2021, patients underwent conservative surgery followed by a regimen of 26 Gy administered in five daily fractions. Results The median age was 64 years (range: 43–83), with 82 patients (51.3%) treated for left‐sided breast cancer, 77 patients (48.1%) for right‐sided breast cancer, and 1 instance (0.6%) of bilateral breast cancer. Of these, 66 patients had pT1c (41.3%), 70.6% were infiltrative ductal carcinomas, and 11.3% were ductal carcinoma in situ. Abstract Age is associated with reduced efficacy of vaccines and linked to higher risk of severe COVID-19. Here we determined the impact of ageing on the efficacy of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine based on a stabilised Spike glycoprotein (S-29) that had previously shown high efficacy in young animals. Thirteen to 18-month-old golden Syrian hamsters (GSH) and 22–23-month-old K18-hCAE2 mice were immunised twice with S-29 protein in AddaVaxTM adjuvant. GSH were intranasally inoculated with SARS-CoV-2 either two weeks or four months after the booster dose, while all K18-hACE2 mice were intranasally inoculated two weeks after the second immunisation. Body weight and clinical signs were recorded daily post-inoculation. Lesions and viral load were investigated in different target tissues. Immunisation induced seroconversion and production of neutralising antibodies; however, animals were only partially protected from weight loss. We observed a significant reduction in the amount of viral RNA and a faster viral protein clearance in the tissues of immunized animals. Infectious particles showed a faster decay in vaccinated animals while tissue lesion development was not altered. In GSH, the shortest interval between immunisation and inoculation reduced RNA levels in the lungs, while the longest interval was equally effective in reducing RNA in nasal turbinates; viral nucleoprotein amount decreased in both tissues. In mice, immunisation was able to improve the survival of infected animals. Despite the high protection shown in young animals, S-29 efficacy was reduced in the geriatric population. Our research highlights the importance of testing vaccine efficacy in older animals as part of preclinical vaccine evaluation.

The increase in world population and the demand for technologies have exponentially increased the consumption of mineral resources, putting their availability for future generations at risk. The objective of this study is to know the state of academic production on resource scarcity and evaluate its consequences on exploitation, sustainability and technological development. A systematized bibliographic review was developed using the Scopus, WoS and SciELO databases. 57 documents were analyzed that cover topics such as the environmental impact of extraction, reuse strategies, criticality evaluations and regulatory policies for mining activity. It is concluded that the main factors of resource scarcity are related to the lack of regulations, the growing demand for new technologies and discrepancy in criticality estimation methods. There is a need to look for extraction alternatives and promote material recovery strategies.

Como primer objetivo, en este artículo se lleva a cabo un análisis bibliométrico que pretende servir como guía de cómo realizar una bibliometría a través de biblioshiny, una interfaz del software estadístico Bibliometrix. Para ello, se ha usado como ejemplo una búsqueda donde se detalla la metodología, procedimientos y estrategias utilizadas para responder a las preguntas de investigación y así conocer, como un segundo objetivo, qué trabajos desarrollan conjuntamente el Pensamiento Computacional, la Modelización y la Indagación en el área de ciencias. Utilizando métodos estadísticos cuantitativos de visualización de datos, se pretende conocer a los autores y revistas más relevantes y sus índices de impacto, así como las temáticas principales y su evolución temporal para saber qué y cómo se trabaja en este campo de estudio. Los resultados indican que en los 31 artículos seleccionados la modelización es uno de los temas motores llevándose a cabo a través de la investigación, construcción y diseño de simulaciones en entornos digitales a través de la programación basada en bloques.

Large CO2 emissions constitute a significant problem today due to their effect on climate change, and the need to design appropriate energy policies to mitigate their consequences and reduce emissions requires a detailed analysis of one of the main sources of such emissions: the electricity system. Thus, this paper presents a study on the effects of energy policies on decarbonization by comparing the detailed phase-out of coal-fired power plants across a range of cases with the implementation of a carbon tax to meet Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The case study focuses on the Chilean electricity system, using a long-term generation and transmission expansion planning model (GTEP) that incorporates a wide range of generation technologies. The study examines the long-term effects of these policies, including costs, investments, and CO2 emissions, as well as their impact on consumer prices reflected in the marginal costs of the system. The transmission system modeling covers various regions of Chile and significant projections for renewable energy sources. It evaluates three economic scenarios based on generation technology costs, fuel prices, and electricity demand under four different closure schemes and fourteen different carbon tax levels. The results indicate that implementing a carbon tax can be more cost-effective for the system than the implementation of a phase-out schedule for coal plants, taking the form of reduced CO2 emission and overall system costs, with an optimal carbon tax value of 37 USD/tCO2. Additionally, the study reveals significant effects on consumer prices, showing that a carbon tax as an energy policy leads to lower prices compared to a phase-out scheme.

The search for synergies between natural products and commercial antibiotics is a promising strategy against bacterial resistance. This study determined the antimicrobial capacity of Nerol (NE) and Tannic Acid (TA) against 14 pathogenic bacteria, including ESKAPE pathogens. TA exhibited the lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) at 162.5 µg/mL against Pasteurella aerogenes and 187.5 µg/mL against Acinetobacter baumannii (WHO priority 1). NE showed its lowest MIC of 500 µg/mL against both Pasteurella aerogenes and Salmonella enterica. A total of 35 combinations of NE and 13 of TA with eight commercial antibiotics were analyzed. For NE, combinations with Streptomycin and Gentamicin were effective against Salmonella enterica, Bacillus subtilis, and Streptococcus agalactiae, with antibiotic MIC reductions between 75.0 and 87.5%. TA showed six synergies with Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin, Erythromycin, and Streptomycin against Acinetobacter baumannii, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Pasteurella aerogenes, with MIC reductions between 75.0 and 93.7%. Additionally, 31 additive effects with antibiotics for NE and 8 for TA were found. Kinetic studies on these synergies showed complete inhibition of bacterial growth, suggesting that natural products enhance antibiotics by facilitating their access to targets or preventing resistance. Given their safety profiles recognized by the EPA and FDA, these natural products could be promising candidates as antibiotic enhancers.
