Abstract

We search for potential ``birthmarks'' left from the formation of filamentary molecular clouds in the Ophiuchus complex. We use high dynamic-range column density and temperature maps derived from \textit{Herschel}, \textit{Planck}, and \textit{2MASS/NICEST} extinction data. We find two distinct types of filaments based on their orientation relative to nearby massive stars: radial (R-type) and tangential (T-type). R-type filaments exhibit decreasing mass profiles away from massive stars, while T-type filaments show flat but structured profiles. We propose a scenario where both filament types originate from the dynamic interplay of compression and stretching forces exerted by a fast outflow emanating from the OB association. The two formation mechanisms leave distinct observable ``birthmarks'' (namely, filament orientation, mass distribution, and star formation location) on each filament type. Our results illustrate a complex phase in molecular cloud evolution with two simultaneous yet contrasting processes: the formation of filaments and stars via the dispersal of residual gas from a previous massive star formation event. Abstract

The experimental determination of the magnitude and momentum dependence of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is an outstanding problem in condensed matter physics. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has been previously employed to determine the EPC, since the intensity of phonon peaks in RIXS spectra has been directly related to the underlying EPC strength. In order to assess the limits of validity of such a relation, we compare experimental results and theoretical predictions for several high-T$_c$ superconducting cuprates. Namely, we investigate the intensity of the bond-stretching phonon mode in CaCuO$_2$, La$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$, La$_{1.84}$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ along the high symmetry ($\zeta$,0), ($\zeta$,$\zeta$) directions and as a function of the azimuthal angle $\phi$ at fixed modulus of the in-plane momentum $\mathbf{q_\parallel}$. Using two different theoretical approaches for the description of the RIXS scattering from phonons, we find that the $\mathbf{q_\parallel}$-dependence of the RIXS intensity can be largely ascribed to the symmetry of the phonon mode, and that satisfactory prediction of the experimental results cannot be obtained without including realistic details of the electronic structure in the calculations. Regardless of the theoretical model, RIXS provides a reliable momentum dependence of EPC in cuprates and can be used to test advanced theoretical predictions., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

JUNO is a huge neutrino detector that will use 20 kton of organic liquid scintillator as its detection medium. The scintillator is a mixture of linear alkyl benzene (LAB), 2.5 g/L of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and 3 mg/L of 1,4-Bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene (Bis-MSB). The main goal of JUNO is to determine the Neutrino Mass Ordering [1, 2, 3]. In order to achieve this purpose, good energy and position reconstruction is required, hence a complete understanding of the optical characteristics of the liquid scintillator is mandatory. In this paper we present the measurements on the JUNO scintillator emission spectrum, absorption length and fluorescence time distribution performed respectively with a spectrofluorimeter, a spectrophotometer and a custom made setup

4. Spin-Orbit Alignment in Merging Binary Black Holes Following Collisions with Massive Stars

Abstract

Merging binary black holes (BBHs) formed dynamically in dense star clusters are expected to have uncorrelated spin--orbit orientations since they are assembled through many random interactions. However, measured effective spins in BBHs detected by LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA hint at additional physical processes that may introduce anisotropy. Here we address this question by exploring the impact of stellar collisions, and accretion of collision debris, on the spin--orbit alignment in merging BBHs formed in dense star clusters. Through hydrodynamic simulations, we study the regime where the disruption of a massive star by a BBH causes the stellar debris to form individual accretion disks bound to each black hole. We show that these disks, which are randomly oriented relative to the binary orbital plane after the initial disruption of the star, can be reoriented by strong tidal torques in the binary near pericenter passages. Following accretion by the BHs on longer timescales, BBHs with small but preferentially positive effective spin parameters ($\chi_{\rm eff} \lesssim 0.2$) are formed. Our results indicate that BBH collisions in young massive star clusters could contribute to the observed trend toward small positive $\chi_{\rm eff}$, and we suggest that the standard assumption often made that dynamically assembled BBHs should have isotropically distributed BH spins is not always justified., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, V1

Abstract

Context. The supernova remnant (SNR) W44 and its surroundings are a prime target for studying the acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs). Several previous studies established an extended gamma-ray emission that is set apart from the radio shell of W44. This emission is thought to originate from escaped high-energy CRs that interact with a surrounding dense molecular cloud complex. Aims. We present a detailed analysis of Fermi-LAT data with an emphasis on the spatial and spectral properties of W44 and its surroundings. We also report the results of the observations performed with the MAGIC telescopes of the northwestern region of W44. Finally, we present an interpretation model to explain the gamma-ray emission of the SNR and its surroundings. Methods. We first performed a detailed spatial analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT data at energies above 1 GeV, in order to exploit the better angular resolution, while we set a threshold of 100MeV for the spectral analysis. We performed a likelihood analysis of 174 hours of MAGIC data above 130 GeV using the spatial information obtained with Fermi-LAT. Results. The combined spectra of Fermi-LAT and MAGIC, extending from 100MeV to several TeV, were used to derive constraints on the escape of CRs. Using a time-dependent model to describe the particle acceleration and escape from the SNR, we show that the maximum energy of the accelerated particles has to be ' 40 GeV. However, our gamma-ray data suggest that a small number of lower-energy particles also needs to escape. We propose a novel model, the broken-shock scenario, to account for this effect and explain the gamma-ray emission.

Abstract

Mrk 421 was in its most active state around early 2010, which led to the highest TeV gamma-ray flux ever recorded from any active galactic nuclei. We aim to characterize the multiwavelength behavior during this exceptional year for Mrk 421, and evaluate whether it is consistent with the picture derived with data from other less exceptional years. We investigated the period from November 5, 2009, (MJD 55140) until July 3, 2010, (MJD 55380) with extensive coverage from very-high-energy (VHE; E$\,>\,$100$\,$GeV) gamma rays to radio with MAGIC, VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, RXTE, Swift, GASP-WEBT, VLBA, and a variety of additional optical and radio telescopes. We investigated the variability and correlation behavior among different energy bands in great detail. We find the strongest variability in X-rays and VHE gamma rays, and PSDs compatible with power-law functions. We observe strong correlations between X-rays and VHE gamma rays. We also report a marginally significant positive correlation between high-energy (HE; E$\,>\,$100$\,$MeV) gamma rays and the ultraviolet band. We detected marginally significant correlations between the HE and VHE gamma rays, and between HE gamma rays and the X-ray, that disappear when the large flare in February 2010 is excluded from the correlation study. The activity of Mrk 421 also yielded the first ejection of features in the VLBA images of the jet of Mrk 421. Yet the large uncertainties in the ejection times of these radio features prevent us from firmly associating them to the specific flares recorded during the campaign. We also show that the collected multi-instrument data are consistent with a scenario where the emission is dominated by two regions, a compact and extended zone, which could be considered as a simplified implementation of an energy-stratified jet as suggested by recent IXPE observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Abstract

Gain-of-function mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) genes lead to chondrodysplasia and craniosynostoses. FGFR signaling has a key role in the formation and repair of the craniofacial skeleton. Here, we analyzed the impact of Fgfr2- and Fgfr3-activating mutations on mandibular bone formation and endochondral bone repair after non-stabilized mandibular fractures in mouse models of Crouzon syndrome (Crz) and hypochondroplasia (Hch). Bone mineralization of the calluses was abnormally high in Crz mice and abnormally low in Hch mice. The latter model presented pseudarthrosis and impaired chondrocyte differentiation. Spatial transcriptomic analyses of the Hch callus revealed abnormally low expression of Col11, Col1a, Dmp1 genes in mature chondrocytes. We found that the expression of genes involved in autophagy and apoptosis (Smad1, Comp, Birc2) was significantly perturbed and that the Dusp3, Dusp9, and Socs3 genes controlling the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway were overexpressed. Lastly, we found that treatment with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BGJ398, infigratinib) or a C-type natriuretic peptide (BMN111, vosoritide) fully rescued the defective endochondral bone repair observed in Hch mice. Taken as a whole, our findings show that FGFR3 is a critical orchestrator of bone repair and provide a rationale for the development of potential treatments for patients with FGFR3-osteochondrodysplasia. Abstract

Kaolinite is a single 2D layer of kaolin or metakaolin (MK), common clays that can be characterized as layered 3D materials. We show that because of its chemical composition, kaolinite can be converted into an amorphous 3D material by chemical means. This dimensional transformation is possible due to the large surface to volume ratio and chemical reactivity of kaolinite. We investigate the formation and influence of quasi- or nanocrystalline phases in MK-based alkali-activated materials (AAM) that are related to the Si/Al ratio. We analyze the formation of an AAM from a MK precursor, which is a 3D bonded network that preserves the layered structure at the nanometer scale. We also exfoliate the remaining layered phase to examine the effects of the alkali-activation in the final sheet structures embedded within the amorphous network. Abstract

Aim: This scoping review aims to assess the utility of ultrasound as a prospective tool in measuring body composition and nutritional status in the paediatric population. We provide a comprehensive summary of the existing literature, identify gaps, and propose future research directions. Methods: We conducted a systematic scoping review following the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. This involved screening titles and abstracts of relevant studies, followed by a detailed full‐text review and extraction of pertinent data. Results: We identified and synthesised 34 articles. The review revealed that while ultrasound has been used to assess body composition and bone properties in children, significant gaps remain in the literature. These include limited studies on ultrasound performance, insufficient attention to relevant sample characteristics, reliance on manual image measurements, and limited sample diversity. Conclusion: Point‐of‐care ultrasound shows significant promise for assessing paediatric body composition and nutritional status. To validate and enhance its effectiveness, further research is needed. Future studies should include larger and more diverse patient cohorts and conduct longitudinal investigations to evaluate nutritional interventions. Additionally, developing artificial intelligence (AI) for standardising and automating data interpretation will be crucial in improving the accuracy and efficiency of ultrasound assessments. 39. Erector spinae plane block versus intravenous opioid for analgesia in pediatric cardiac surgery: A systematic review and meta‐analysis.

Abstract

Introduction: The erector spinae plane block (ESPB) has recently emerged as a regional anesthesia technique for perioperative pain management in pediatric cardiac surgery. However, evidence comparing its effectiveness with intravenous (IV) opioid‐based analgesia is limited. We aimed to evaluate and compare the analgesic efficacy of ESPB versus IV opioids in this setting. Methods: We systematically reviewed and meta‐analyzed studies comparing ESPB with IV opioid analgesia in pediatric cardiac surgeries with midline sternotomy. Primary outcomes were intraoperative fentanyl consumption and intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS). Secondary outcomes included postoperative opioid consumption, time to first rescue analgesia, pain scores, postoperative vomiting and other complications, extubation time, and hospital LOS. Statistical analyses were performed using RStudio version 4.2.3. Results: Five studies with 384 patients were included, with 178 receiving ESPB. ESPB significantly reduced intraoperative fentanyl use (MD −1.90 μg.kg−1; 95% CI −3.15 to −0.66 μg.kg−1; p =.003; I2 = 58%) and ICU LOS (MD ‐3.50 h; 95% CI ‐4.32 to −2.69 h; p <.0001; I2 = 0%). No significant differences were found in the remaining outcomes. Conclusion: Our findings suggest the ESPB might be an important adjunct to enhancing analgesia for midline sternotomies in pediatric cardiac surgery, potentially reducing intraoperative opioid requirements and ICU LOS. Abstract

This article builds on the Empirical Monte Carlo simulation approach to study the estimation of Timing-of-Events (ToE) models. We exploit rich Swedish data of unemployed job seekers with information on participation in a training program to simulate placebo treatment durations. We first use these simulations to examine which covariates are key confounders to be included in dynamic selection models for training participation. The joint inclusion of specific short-term employment history indicators (notably, the share of time spent in employment), together with baseline socio-economic characteristics, regional and inflow timing information, is important to deal with selection bias. Next, we omit subsets of explanatory variables and estimate ToE models with discrete distributions for the ensuing systematic unobserved heterogeneity. In many cases, the ToE approach provides accurate effect estimates, especially if time-varying variation in the unemployment rate of the local labor market is taken into account. However, assuming too many or too few support points for unobserved heterogeneity may lead to large biases. Information criteria, in particular those penalizing parameter abundance, are useful to select the number of support points. A comparison with other duration models shows that a Stratified Cox model performs well with abundant multiple spells but less well when multiple spells are uncommon. As the United States faces burgeoning behavioral health needs and a growing recognition of the inextricable link between social conditions and health outcomes and quality-of-life indicators, a current representative profile of the MSW workforce with respect to sociodemographic and employment characteristics can provide a reference point for ongoing assessments of that workforce. The profile also can establish a baseline by which efforts to bolster the diversity and strength of the MSW workforce can be grounded. The core aim of the current study was to generate a nationally representative, descriptive profile of MSW graduates in the United States using a sample of 1,028 MSW graduates (representing a subpopulation of 691,061 individuals) from the 2021 National Survey of College Graduates. Weighted univariate and bivariate analyses were conducted to generate a descriptive profile of MSW graduates with respect to sociodemographic, education, and employment characteristics. Study findings can help employers, health services researchers, policymakers, and practitioners understand the context of the MSW workforce as it relates to diversity, labor workforce projection data, and student loan and salary considerations. Abstract

This study aims to preliminarily validate the Italian version of the Coparenting Relationship Scale for Children (CRS-C) with 141 mothers, 141 fathers, and 141 children (48.6% males) aged 8–14 years. We tested the factorial structure of the CRS-C, which included five factors (support, endorsement, undermining, agreement, and exposure to conflict), and the convergent validity of the CRS-C considering the following measures: CRS for Parents, Children's Perceptions of Interparental Conflict Scale, Security in the Interparental Subsystem, and the Child Behaviour Checklist. Finally, we investigated which dimension of CRS-C could impact the children's perceptions when exposed to interparental conflict and their internalizing and externalizing behaviours. Results showed that the 5-factor model of the CRS-C fitted the data adequately. A good convergent validity between CRS-C and the measures explored was achieved. 44. Comparison of Methods to Estimate Arterial Blood Pressure From the Pulse Arrival Time by Finger Photoplethysmography

Abstract

Promising methods for monitoring blood pressure (BP) are based on the pulse arrival time (PAT) from finger photoplethysmography (PPG). This study aims to investigate the impact of PPG fiducial points, wavelengths, and PAT calibration models on short-term BP estimations. A multi wavelength multisensor PPG device was developed to measure PAT beat-by-beat in ten volunteers during an exercise protocol. Four calibration models (two-coefficient inverse, squared inverse, and logarithmic; and three-coefficient inverse), four fiducial points (wave onset, peak, maximum derivative, and tangents’ intersection), and three wavelengths (red, infrared (IR), and green) were compared to estimate BP on 5-min segments and single beats. Finger systolic and diastolic BP (DBP) served as reference. Estimation errors were higher for systolic than DBP. Acceptable (<5 mmHg) median absolute errors (MAEs) for 5-min average systolic BP (SBP) were achieved by combining red or IR wavelengths with inverse or squared-inverse calibrations. For single-beat estimates, MAEs were higher but remained <8 mmHg with red or IR wavelengths, maximum derivative or tangents’ intersection fiducial points, and two-coefficient calibrations. Short-term BP estimation from finger PAT is feasible by properly combining calibration models, wavelengths, and fiducial points. Identifying the optimal parameters for estimating BP from finger PAT by PPG, this study contributes to the development of noninvasive devices for accurate and continuous BP monitoring both in clinical settings and in the general population.

45. Exploring Chronic Pain in Hemodialysis Patients: An Observational Study Based on the New IASP Classification for ICD-11

Abstract

Introduction: Pain is one of the most frequently reported symptoms in hemodialyzed (HD) patients, with prevalence rates between 33% and 82%. Risk factors for chronic pain in HD patients are older age, long-lasting dialysis history, several concomitant diseases, malnutrition, and others. However, chronic pain assessment in HD patients is rarely performed by specialists in pain medicine, with relevant consequences in terms of diagnostic and treatment accuracy. Furthermore, no study has used the recently introduced International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) pathophysiological classification. Methods: In this observational, cross-sectional study in a tertiary HD center in Northern Italy, we analyzed data regarding HD patients, evaluated for 5 months in 2021 by specialists in pain medicine and aimed to identify and characterize chronic pain according to the IASP definition and the last 2019 classification of chronic pain for ICD-11. Pain severity was evaluated by the pain severity score of the brief pain inventory tool. Results: Among 213 patients, 65 (31%) suffered from chronic pain. The average age was 73.1 years; 55.5% of the patients were male; 53.7% had diabetes, and 39.2% had arterial hypertension. Of the 54 patients subjected to an in-depth evaluation, data regarding 113 pain diagnoses were extracted, particularly related to osteoarthritis, obliterating arterial disease, and low back pain with or without radiculopathy. On the basis of these diagnoses, the pain classification according to the IASP pathophysiological definition highlighted a predominant nociceptive pain type (53.9% of all the diagnoses), followed by neuropathic (22.1%), mixed (22.1%), nociplastic (2.6%), and idiopathic (2.6%) pain. According to the IASP classification for ICD-11, the clinical diagnosis of chronic pain secondary to obliterating arterial disease and diabetes-related foot ulcers could not be assigned to any diagnostic category as a result of the lack of a specific item in the aforementioned classification. Conclusion: This study confirmed that chronic pain is a common, burdening issue in hemodialysis patients and that it is of a prevalent nociceptive nature. Our study highlights some limitations of the last IASP ICD-11 classification, especially the lack of specific items for some pain features that are very frequent in hemodialysis patients, and not only in that population. Finally, this study underlines the importance of mutual collaboration between pain physicians and nephrologists for the well-being of patients of high clinical complexity, such as those undergoing chronic hemodialysis.

46. Dependability of the K Minimum Values Sketch: Protection and Comparative Analysis

Abstract

A basic operation in big data analysis is to find the cardinality estimate; to estimate the cardinality at high speed and with a low memory requirement, data sketches that provide approximate estimates, are usually used. The K Minimum Value (KMV) sketch is one of the most popular options; however, soft errors on memories in KMV may substantially degrade performance. This paper is the first to consider the impact of soft errors on the KMV sketch and to compare it with HyperLogLog (HLL), another widely used sketch for cardinality estimate. Initially, the operation of KMV in the presence of soft errors (so its dependability) in the memory is studied by a theoretical analysis and simulation by error injection. The evaluation results show that errors during the construction phase of KMV may cause large deviations in the estimate results. Subsequently, based on the algorithmic features of the KMV sketch, two protection schemes are proposed. The first scheme is based on using a single parity check (SPC) to detect errors and reduce their impact on the cardinality estimate; the second scheme is based on the incremental property of the memory list in KMV. The presented evaluation shows that both schemes can dramatically improve the performance of KMV, and the SPC scheme performs better even though it requires more memory footprint and overheads in the checking operation. Finally, it is shown that soft errors on the unprotected KMV produce larger worst-case errors than in HLL, but the average impact of errors is lower; also, the protected KMV using the proposed schemes are more dependable than HLL with existing protection techniques.

47. Conferring alloantigen specificity to regulatory T cells: A comparative analysis of cell preparations undergoing clinical development in transplantation

Abstract

Conferring alloantigen-specificity to ex vivo expanded CD4+CD25+FOXP3+regulatory T cells (Tregs) increases their capacity to counteract effector alloimmune responses following adoptive transfer into transplant recipients. Three strategies are currently undergoing clinical development, which involve the following: (1) expanding Tregs in the presence of donor B cells (donor alloantigen-reactive [DAR] Tregs); (2) culturing Tregs with donor cells in the presence of costimulation blockade (CSB-Tregs); and (3) transducing Tregs with an human leukocyte antigen A2–specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-Tregs). Our goal in this study was to assess the relative potency of each of these manufactured Treg products both in vitro and in vivo. When compared with polyclonal Tregs, all 3 manufacturing strategies increased the precursor frequency of alloreactive Tregs, and this was proportional to the overall in vitro immunosuppressive properties of the cell products. Accordingly, CAR-Tregs, which contained the highest frequency of donor-reactive Tregs, exhibited the strongest suppressive effects on a cell-per-cell basis. Similarly, in an in vivo mouse model of graft-vs-host disease, infusion of CAR-Tregs conferred a significantly longer recipient survival than any other Treg product. Our results highlighting the alloantigen-reactivity and associated immunosuppressive properties of different manufactured Treg products have implications for the mechanistic interpretation of currently ongoing clinical trials in transplantation.
