18. Porphyrin Helical Nanochannel‐Assembled Polybenzimidazole Membranes Doped with Phosphoric Acid for Fuel Cells Operating in a Temperature Range of 25–200 °C.

Abstract

High‐temperature proton‐exchange membrane fuel cells (HT‐PEMFCs) fabricated with phosphoric acid (PA)‐doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) show apparent technical advantages. In practical automotive applications, achieving cold start‐up capability is crucial. In this work, a kind of branched block proton exchange membrane (PEM) based on PBI with a low content of porphyrin ring (<1 mol.%) is reported as a branched monomer. Self‐assembly into high‐density helical nanochannels under the synergistic effect of phase separation and porphyrin π−π stacking, thus the PEM can maintain a high level of PA doping. Specifically, the PA/1.8TCPP‐BrPy‐OPBI membrane shows a proton conductivity of 0.169 and 0.071 S cm−1, as well as an H2‐O2 fuel cell peak power density of 1077 and 357 mW cm−2 at 180 and 80 °C without humidification and backpressure, respectively. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) can exhibit good fuel cell stability, with a voltage decay rate of only 7.0 µV h−1 at 80 °C. Furthermore, it maintains a peak power density of 93% even after 150 start‐up/shut‐down cycles at 25 °C. This work expands the operating temperature range of conventional PBI membranes between 25 and 200 °C and thus provides a novel strategy for high‐performance PBI‐based HT‐PEMFCs. 20. Advancing Lithium–Magnesium Separation: Pioneering Swelling-Embedded Cation Exchange Membranes Based on Sulfonated Poly(ether ether ketone)

Abstract

With the continuous advancement of electrodialysis (ED) technology, there arises a demand for improved monovalent cation exchange membranes (CEMs). However, limitations in membrane materials and structures have resulted in the low selectivity of monovalent CEMs, posing challenges in the separation of Li+and Mg2+. In this investigation, a designed CEM with a swelling-embedded structure was created by integrating a polyelectrolyte containing N-oxide Zwitterion into a sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane, leveraging the notable solubility characteristic of SPEEK. The membranes were prepared by using N-oxide zwitterionic polyethylenimine (ZPEI) and 1,3,5-benzenetrlcarbonyl trichloride (TMC). The as-prepared membranes underwent systematic characterization and testing, evaluating their structural, physicochemical, electrochemical, and selective ED properties. During ED, the modified membranes demonstrated notable permeability selectivity for Li+ions in binary (Li+/Mg2+) systems. Notably, at a constant current density of 2.5 mA cm–2, the modified membrane PEI-TMC/SPEEK exhibited significant permeability selectivity (PMg2+Li+=5.63)in the Li+/Mg2+system, while ZPEI-TMC/SPEEK outperformed, displaying remarkable permeability selectivity (PMg2+Li+=12.43)in the Li+/Mg2+system, surpassing commercial monovalent cation-selective membrane commercial monovalent cation-selective membrane (CIMS). Furthermore, in the Li+/Mg2+binary system, Li+flux reached 9.78 × 10–9mol cm–2s–1for ZPEI-TMC/SPEEK, while its Mg2+flux only reached 2.7 × 10–9mol cm–2s–1, showing potential for lithium–magnesium separation. In addition, ZPEI-TMC/SPEEK was tested for performance and stability at high current densities. This work offers a straightforward preparation process and an innovative structural approach, presenting methodological insights for the advancement of lithium and magnesium separation techniques.
