Search

The Small and Large Magellanic Clouds are the only galaxies outside our own in which radio pulsars have been discovered to date. The sensitivity of the MeerKAT radio interferometer offers an opportunity to search for a population of more distant extragalactic pulsars. The TRAPUM (TRansients And PUlsars with MeerKAT) collaboration has performed a radio-domain search for pulsars and transients in the dwarf star-forming galaxies Sextans A and B, situated at the edge of the Local Group 1.4 Mpc away. We conducted three 2-h multibeam observations at L band (856–1712 MHz) with the full array of MeerKAT. No pulsars were found down to a radio pseudo-luminosity upper limit of 7.9 |$\pm$| 0.4 Jy kpc |$^{2}$| at 1400 MHz, which is 28 times more sensitive than the previous limit from the Murriyang telescope. This luminosity is 30 per cent greater than that of the brightest known radio pulsar and sets a cut-off on the luminosity distributions of the entire Sextans A and B galaxies for unobscured radio pulsars beamed in our direction. A fast radio burst was detected in one of the Sextans A observations at a dispersion measure (DM) of 737 pc cm |$^{-3}$|⁠. We believe this is a background event not associated with the dwarf galaxy due to its large DM and its signal-to-noise ratio being strongest in the wide-field incoherent beam of MeerKAT. Self-enrichment is one of the leading explanations for chemical anomalies in globular clusters. In this scenario, various candidate polluter stars have been proposed to eject gas with altered chemical composition during the self-enrichment process. Most of the proposed polluters will also eject radioactive |$^{26}$| Al into the surroundings. Hence, any detection of |$^{26}$| Al in young massive star clusters (YMCs) would support the self-enrichment scenario if YMCs were indeed the progenitors of globular clusters. Observations of gamma-ray data from COMPTEL and INTEGRAL, as well as detections of |$^{26}$| AlF molecules by the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA), indicate the maturing of |$^{26}$| Al detection methods. Detection possibilities will be enhanced in the short- to mid-term by the upcoming launch of the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI). The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) could in principle also detect radio recombination lines of the positronium formed from the decay products of |$^{26}$| Al. Here, we show for a sample of YMCs in the nearby Universe, where self-enrichment could plausibly take place. For some nearby galaxies, this could enhance |$^{26}$| Al by an order of one magnitude. Detecting |$^{26}$| AlF with ALMA appears feasible for many candidate self-enrichment clusters, although significant challenges remain with other detection methods. The Large Magellanic Cloud, with its YMC R136, stands out as the most promising candidate. Detecting a 1.8 MeV radioactive decay line of |$^{26}$| Al here would require at least 15 months of targeted observation with COSI, assuming ongoing self-enrichment in R136. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the absolute calibration of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using small amplitude red giant stars (SARGs) classified by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). We show that all stars near the SMC's TRGB are SARGs. Distinguishing older and younger RGs near the tip according to two period–luminosity sequences labeled A and B, we show many similarities among SARG populations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the SMC, along with notable differences. In particular, SMC SARGs have shorter periods due to lower metallicity and smaller amplitudes due to younger ages than LMC SARGs. We discover two period–color relations near the TRGB that span all A-sequence and B-sequence stars in the OGLE-III footprints of the SMC and LMC, and we investigate using periods instead of color for TRGB standardization. Using variability-derived information only, we trace the SMC's age and metallicity gradients and show the core to be populated by younger, more metal-rich RGs. The B-sequence yields the brightest and most accurate calibration (M F814W,syn = −4.057 ± 0.019(stat.) ± 0.029(syst.) mag), which we use to measure the distance modulus difference between the Clouds and investigate metallicity effects. Distance measurements not informed by variability should employ the SARG-based calibration based on all stars near the tip (M F814W,syn = −4.024 ± 0.041(stat.) ± 0.029(syst.) mag). The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) form the closest interacting galactic system to the Milky Way, therewith providing a laboratory to test cosmological models in the local Universe. We quantify the likelihood for the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) to be observed within the Λ CDM model using hydrodynamical simulations of the IllustrisTNG project. The orbits of the MCs are constrained by proper motion measurements taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and Gaia. The MCs have a mutual separation of d MCs = 24.5 kpc and a relative velocity of v MCs = 90.8 km s − 1 , implying a specific phase-space density of f MCs , obs ≡ (d MCs · v MCs) − 3 = 9.10 × 10 − 11 km − 3 s 3 kpc − 3 . We select analogues to the MCs based on their stellar masses and distances in MW-like halos. None of the selected LMC analogues have a higher total mass and lower Galactocentric distance than the LMC, resulting in >3.75 σ tension. We also find that the f MCs distribution in the highest resolution TNG50 simulation is in 3.95 σ tension with observations. Thus, a hierarchical clustering of two massive satellites like the MCs in a narrow phase-space volume is unlikely in Λ CDM, presumably because of short merger timescales due to dynamical friction between the overlapping dark matter halos. We show that group infall led by an LMC analogue cannot populate the Galactic disc of satellites (DoS), implying that the DoS and the MCs formed in physically unrelated ways in Λ CDM. Since the 20 ∘ alignment of the LMC and DoS orbital poles has a likelihood of P = 0.030 ( 2.17 σ ), adding this χ 2 to that of f MCs gives a combined likelihood of P = 3.90 × 10 − 5 ( 4.11 σ ). The evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), the main sites of high-mass star formation, is an essential process to unravel the galaxy evolution. Using a GMC catalogue of M 33 from the ALMA-ACA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array–Atacama Compact Array) survey, we classified 848 GMCs into three types based on the association with H  ii regions and their H |$\alpha$| luminosities |$L\, (\rm{H}\alpha)$|⁠ : Type I is associated with no H  ii regions; Type II with H  ii regions of |$L\, (\rm{H}\alpha)$| |$\lt 10^{37.5}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$|⁠ ; and Type III with H  ii regions of |$L\, (\rm{H}\alpha)$|   |$\geqq$|   |$10^{37.5}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$|⁠. These criteria yield 224 Type I GMCs, 473 Type II GMCs, and 151 Type III GMCs. GMCs show changes in their physical properties according to the types; mass, radius, velocity dispersion, and |$^{13}$| CO detection rate of GMCs systematically increase from Type I to Type III, and additionally, Type III GMCs are closest to virial equilibrium. Type III GMCs show the highest spatial correlation with clusters younger than |$10\:$| Myr, Type II GMCs moderate correlation, and Type I GMCs are almost uncorrelated. We interpret that these types indicate an evolutionary sequence from Type I to Type II, and then to Type III with timescales of 4 Myr, 13 Myr, and 5 Myr, respectively, indicating a GMC lifetime of 22 Myr by assuming that a Type II GMC has the same timescale as the Large Magellanic Cloud. The evolved GMCs are concentrated on the spiral arms, while the younger GMCs are apart from the arm, both to the leading and trailing sides. This indicates that GMCs collide with each other via the spiral potential, leading to the compression of GMCs and the triggering of high-mass star formation, which may support the dynamic spiral model. We investigated the giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in M 74 (NGC 628), using data obtained from the PHANGS (Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS) project. We applied GMC types according to the activity of star formation: Type I without star formation, Type II with H |$\alpha$| luminosity (⁠|$L_{\mathrm{H\alpha }}$|⁠) less than |$10^{37.5}\ \rm{erg\ s ^{-1}}$|⁠ , and Type III with |$L_{\mathrm{H\alpha }}$| greater than |$10^{37.5}\ \rm{erg\ s^{-1}}$|⁠. A total of 432 GMCs were identified, with 59, 201, and 172 GMCs, for Types I, II, and III, respectively. The size and mass of the GMCs range from 23 to 238 pc and |$10^{4.9}$| to |$10^{7.1}\, M_{\odot }$|⁠ , indicating that the mass and radius increase from Types I to III. Clusters younger than 4 Myr and H  ii regions are concentrated within 150 pc of a GMC, indicating a tight association between these young objects and GMCs. The virial ratio decreases from Type I to Type III, indicating that Type III GMCs are the most gravitationally relaxed among the three. We interpret that the GMCs evolve from Type I to Type III, as previously observed in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Based on a steady-state assumption, the estimated evolutionary timescales of Types I, II, and III are 1, 5, and 4 Myr, respectively. We assume that the timescale of Type III is equal to the age of the associated clusters, indicating a GMC lifetime of 10 Myr or longer. Although Chevance et al. (2020 , MNRAS, 493, 2872) investigated GMCs using the same PHANGS dataset of M 74, they did not define a GMC, reaching an evolutionary picture with a 20 Myr duration of the non-star-forming phase, which is five times longer than 4 Myr. The Medium-Resolution Spectrometer on the Mid-Infrared Instrument on the JWST obtained spectra of three carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Two of the spectra differ significantly from spectra obtained ∼16–19 years earlier with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The one semi-regular variable among the three has changed little. The long-period Mira variable in the sample shows changes consistent with its pulsation cycle. The short-period Mira shows dramatic changes in the strength of its molecular absorption bands, with some bands growing weaker and some stronger. Stellar ages are critical for understanding the temporal evolution of a galaxy. We calculate the ages of over 6000 red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed with SDSS-IV / APOGEE-S. Ages are derived using multiband photometry, spectroscopic parameters (⁠|$\rm T_{eff}$|⁠ , |$\log {g}$|⁠ , [Fe/H], and [ |$\alpha$| /Fe]) and stellar isochrones and the assumption that the stars lie in a thin inclined plane to get accurate distances. The isochrone age and extinction are varied until a best match is found for the observed photometry. We perform validation using the APOKASC sample, which has asteroseismic masses and accurate ages, and find that our uncertainties are |$\sim$| 20 per cent and range from |$\sim$| 1–3 Gyr for the calculated ages (most reliable below 10 Gyr). Here we present the LMC age map as well as the age–radius relation and an accurate age–metallicity relation (AMR). The age map and age–radius relation reveal that recent star formation in the galaxy was more centrally located and that there is a slight dichotomy between the north and south with the northern fields being slightly younger. The northern fields that cover a known spiral arm have median ages of |$\gtrsim$| 2 Gyr, which is the time when an interaction with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is suggested to have happened. The AMR is mostly flat especially for older ages although recently (about 2.0–2.5 Gyr ago) there is an increase in the median [Fe/H]. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) presents a unique environment for pulsar population studies due to its distinct star formation characteristics and proximity to the Milky Way. As part of the TRAPUM (TRAnsients and PUlsars with MeerKAT) Large Survey Project, we are using the core array of the MeerKAT radio telescope (MeerKAT) to conduct a targeted search of the LMC for radio pulsars at L -band frequencies, 856–1712 MHz. The excellent sensitivity of MeerKAT, coupled with a 2-h integration time, makes the survey 3 times more sensitive than previous LMC radio pulsar surveys. We report the results from the initial four survey pointings which have resulted in the discovery of seven new radio pulsars, increasing the LMC radio pulsar population by 30 per cent. The pulse periods of these new pulsars range from 278 to 1690 ms, and the highest dispersion measure is 254.20  |$\mathrm{ pc} \, \mathrm{ cm}^{-3}$|⁠. We searched for, but did not find any significant pulsed radio emission in a beam centred on the SN 1987A remnant, establishing an upper limit of 6.3  |$\mu \mathrm{ Jy}$| on its minimum flux density at 1400 MHz. I report the discovery of a stellar stream (Sutlej) using Gaia DR3 (third data release) proper motions and XP metallicities located |$\sim$| 15° north of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The stream is composed of two parallel linear components ('branches') approximately |$\sim$| 8° × 0.6° in size and separated by 2.5°. The stars have a mean proper motion of (⁠|$\mu _{\rm RA},\mu _{\rm Dec.}$|⁠) = (+0.08 mas yr−1, −1.41 mas yr−1), which is quite similar to the proper motion of stars on the western side of the SMC. The colour–magnitude diagram of the stream stars has a clear red giant branch, horizontal branch, and main-sequence turn-off that are well matched by a parsec isochrone of 10 Gyr, [Fe/H] = −1.8 at 32 kpc, and a total stellar mass of |$\sim$| 33 000 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠. The stream is spread out over an area of 9.6 deg2 and has a surface brightness of 32.5 mag arcsec−2. The metallicity of the stream stars from Gaia XP spectra extends over |$-2.5$| |$\le$| [M/H] |$\le$| |$-1.0$| with a median of [M/H] = −1.8. The tangential velocity of the stream stars is 214 km s−1 compared to the values of 448 km s−1 for the Large Magellanic Cloud and 428 km s−1 for the SMC. While the radial velocity of the stream is not yet known, a comparison of the space velocities using a range of assumed radial velocities shows that the stream is unlikely to be associated with the Magellanic Clouds. The tangential velocity vector is misaligned with the stream by nearly 90°, which might indicate an important gravitational influence from the nearby Magellanic Clouds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surveys in the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud have revealed that the majority of massive stars will interact with companions during their lives. However, knowledge of the binary properties of massive stars at low metallicity, and therefore in conditions approaching those of the Early Universe, remain sparse. We present the Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) campaign, an ESO large programme designed to obtain 25 epochs of spectroscopy for 929 massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, allowing us to probe multiplicity in the lowest-metallicity conditions to date (Z = 0.2 Z⊙). BLOeM will provide (i) the binary fraction, (ii) the orbital configurations of systems with periods of P ≲ 3 yr, (iii) dormant black-hole binary candidates (OB+BH), and (iv) a legacy database of physical parameters of massive stars at low metallicity. Main sequence (OB-type) and evolved (OBAF-type) massive stars are observed with the LR02 setup of the GIRAFFE instrument of the Very Large Telescope (3960–4570 Å resolving power R = 6200; typical signal-to-noise ratio(S/N) ≈70–100). This paper utilises the first nine epochs obtained over a three-month time period. We describe the survey and data reduction, perform a spectral classification of the stacked spectra, and construct a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the sample via spectral-type and photometric calibrations. Our detailed classification reveals that the sample covers spectral types from O4 to F5, spanning the effective temperature and luminosity ranges 6.5 ≲ Teff/kK ≲ 45 and 3.7 < log L/L⊙ < 6.1 and initial masses of 8 ≲ Mini ≲ 80 M⊙. The sample comprises 159 O-type stars, 331 early B-type (B0–3) dwarfs and giants (luminosity classes V–III), 303 early B-type supergiants (II–I), and 136 late-type BAF supergiants. At least 82 stars are OBe stars: 20 O-type and 62 B-type (13% and 11% of the respective samples). In addition, the sample includes 4 high-mass X-ray binaries, 3 stars resembling luminous blue variables, 2 bloated stripped-star candidates, 2 candidate magnetic stars, and 74 eclipsing binaries. Context. Large spectroscopic surveys of individual massive stars, such as ULLYSES and XShootU, provide observational data for hundreds of massive stars. Their analysis requires large numbers of synthetic spectra so that stellar parameters can be determined. In addition, libraries of massive stars' spectra are needed to produce population synthesis models able to reproduce the observed spectra of unresolved young stellar populations, such as those revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in the early Universe. Aims. Our main goal is to provide an extensive library of synthetic spectra and spectral energy distributions of OB stars at metallicities of the Magellanic Clouds. This library will offer a wealth of spectrophotometric information, making it readily applicable to a variety of astrophysical problems. Methods. We used the CMFGEN code to calculate 606 NLTE, line-blanketed, expanding atmosphere models using a comprehensive set of atomic data. An overall metallicity of 1/2 Z⊙ and 1/5 Z⊙ was adopted for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), respectively. We produced high-resolution spectra from 30 Å to 3 µm for stars on the Main Sequence and slightly beyond. Results. We provide spectral energy distributions, normalized synthetic spectra, ionizing fluxes, and photometry in various bands: Johnson UBV, Cousins RI, Bessel JHK, selected wide JWST filters, Gaia, and LSST ugrizy filters. For each of these filters, we compute bolometric corrections for all synthetic spectra and calibrations as a function of effective temperature. Conclusions. All of our synthetic spectra are publicly available through the POLLUX database, aiming to expedite multiwavelength analyses of massive stars in low metallicity environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Recently, astrometric and spectroscopic surveys of OB stars revealed a few stellar-mass black holes (BHs) with orbital periods of as low as 10 days. Contrary to wind-fed BH high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), no X-ray counterpart was detected, probably because of the absence of a radiatively efficient accretion disc around the BH. Nevertheless, dissipative processes in the hot, dilute, and strongly magnetised plasma around the BH (so-called BH corona) can still lead to non-thermal X-ray emission (e.g. synchrotron). Aims. We determine the X-ray luminosity distribution from BH+OB star binaries up to orbital periods of a few thousand days. Methods. We used detailed binary evolution models computed with MESA for initial primary masses of 10–90 M⊙ and orbital periods of 1–3000 d. We computed the X-ray luminosity for a broad range of radiative efficiencies that depend on the mass accretion rate and flow geometry. Results. For typical conditions around stellar-mass BHs, we show that particle acceleration through magnetic reconnection can heat the BH corona. A substantial fraction of the gravitational potential energy from the accreted plasma is converted into non-thermal X-ray emission. Our population synthesis analysis predicts that at least 28 (up to 72) BH+OB star binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) produce X-ray luminosities of above 1031 erg s−1, which are observable with focused Chandra observations. We identify a population of SB1 systems in the LMC and HD96670 in the Milky Way comprising O stars with unseen companions of masses of above 2.3 M⊙, which aligns well with our predictions and may be interesting sources for follow-up observations. The predicted luminosities of the OB companions to these X-ray-emitting BHs are 104.5 − 5.5L⊙. Conclusions. These findings advocate for prolonged X-ray observations of the stellar-mass black hole candidates identified in the vicinity of OB stars. Such long exposures could reveal the underlying population of X-ray-faint BHs and provide constraints for the evolution from single to double degenerate binaries and identify the progenitors of gravitational wave mergers. Context. Despite mounting evidence that extreme red supergiants (RSGs) undergo episodic mass-loss events, their role in RSG evolution remains uncertain. Critical questions remain unanswered, such as whether or not these events can strip the star, and their timescale and frequency. Aims. This study delves into [W60] B90, one of the most luminous and extreme RSGs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), with our aim being to search for evidence of episodic mass loss. Our discovery of a bar-like nebular structure at 1 pc, which is reminiscent of the bar around Betelgeuse, raised the question of whether [W60] B90 also has a bow shock, motivating the present study. Methods. We collected and analyzed proper motion data from Gaia, as well as new multi-epoch spectroscopic and imaging data, and archival time-series photometry in the optical and mid-infrared (MIR). We used MARCS models to derive the physical properties of the star from the spectra. Results. We find [W60] B90 to be a walkaway star, with a supersonic peculiar velocity in the direction of the bar. We detect shocked emission between the bar and the star, based on the [S II]/Hα > 0.4 criterion, providing strong evidence for a bow shock. The 30 yr optical light curve reveals semi-regular variability, showing three similar dimming events with ΔV ~ 1 mag, a recurrence of ~12 yr, and a rise time of 400 days. We find the MIR light curve to vary by 0.51 mag and 0.37 mag in the WISE1 and WISE2 bands, respectively, and by 0.42 mag and 0.25 mag during the last dimming event. During this event, optical spectroscopy reveals spectral variability (M3 I to M4 I), a correlation between the Teff and the brightness, increased extinction, and, after the minimum, spectral features incompatible with the models. We also find a difference of >300 K between the Teff measured from the TiO bands in the optical and the atomic lines from our J-band spectroscopy. Conclusions. [W60] B90 is a more massive analog of Betelgeuse in the LMC and therefore the first single extragalactic RSG with a suspected bow shock. Its high luminosity of log(L/L⊙) = 5.32 dex, mass-loss rate, and MIR variability compared to other RSGs in the LMC indicate that it is in an unstable evolutionary state, undergoing episodes of mass loss. Investigating other luminous and extreme RSGs in low-metallicity environments using both archival photometry and spectroscopy is crucial to understanding the mechanism driving episodic mass loss in extreme RSGs in light of the Humphreys-Davidson limit and the "RSG problem". Context. The Magellanic Clouds (MCs) are the Milky Way's most massive dwarf satellites. As they also represent the closest pair of galaxies in an ongoing tidal interaction while simultaneously infalling into the Milky Way halo, they provide a unique opportunity to study in detail an ongoing three-body encounter. Aims. We present the YMCA (Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again) survey: Probing the outer regions of the Magellanic system with VST, based on deep optical photometry carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). Methods. The YMCA survey targeted 110 square degrees, in the g and i filters, in the periphery of both MCs, including a long strip in between the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The photometry of YMCA is sufficiently deep (50% complete down to g ≃ 23.5 − 24.0 mag) to allow for a detailed analysis of main-sequence stars in regions of the MCs that have remained relatively unexplored at these faint magnitudes. Results. The resulting colour–magnitude diagrams reveal that the outskirts of the MCs are predominantly characterised by intermediate-age and old stellar populations, with limited or negligible evidence of recent star formation. The analysis of the age distribution of star clusters (SCs) within the surveyed area, both already known and newly discovered candidates, hints at a close fly-by between the LMC and SMC that occurred ≃2.5 − 3.0 Gyr ago, in agreement with previous results. Context. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows are powerful probes for studying the different properties of their host galaxies (e.g., the interstellar dust) at all redshifts. By fitting their spectral energy distribution (SED) over a large range of wavelengths, we can gain direct insights into the properties of the interstellar dust by studying the extinction curves. Unlike the dust extinction templates, such as those of the average Milky Way (MW) or the Small and Large Magellanic Cloud (SMC and LMC), the extinction curves of galaxies outside the Local Group exhibit deviation from these laws. Altogether, X-ray and gamma-ray satellites as well as ground-based telescopes, such as Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift) and Gamma-Ray Optical and Near-Infrared Detector (GROND), provide measurements of the afterglows from the X-ray to the NIR, which can be used to extract information on dust extinction curves along their lines of sight (LoS). The study presented in this paper undertakes such a photometric study, comprising a preparatory work for the SVOM mission and its ground-based follow-up telescope COLIBRI. Aims. We propose a simple approach to parameterize the dust extinction curve of GRB host galaxies. The model used in this analysis is based on a power law form with the addition of a Loretzian-like Drude profile with two parameters: the extinction slope, γ, and the 2175 Å bump amplitude, Eb. Methods. Using the g′r′i′z′JHKs GROND filter bands, we tested our dust extinction model and explored the parameter space in extinction and redshift by fitting SEDs of simplified simulations of GRB afterglow spectra based on different extinction curve templates. From a final sample of 10 real Swift/GROND extinguished GRBs, we determined the quantities of the dust extinction in their host and measured their extinction curves. Results. We find that our derived extinction curves are in agreement with the spectroscopic measurements reported for four GRBs in the literature. We compared four other GRBs to the results of photometric studies where fixed laws were used to fit their data. We additionally derived two new GRB extinction curves. The measured average extinction curve is given by a slope of γ = 1.051 ± 0.129 and Eb = 0.070 ± 0.036, which is equivalent to a quasi-featureless in-between SMC-LMC template. This is consistent with previous studies aimed at deriving the dust host galaxy extinction where we expect that small dust grains dominate in GRB environment, yielding a steeper curve than the mean MW extinction curve. Massive binary evolution models are needed to predict massive star populations in star-forming galaxies, the supernova diversity, and the number and properties of gravitational wave sources. Such models are often computed using so-called rapid binary evolution codes, which approximate the evolution of the binary components based on detailed single star models. However, about one-third of the interacting massive binary stars undergo mass transfer during core hydrogen-burning (Case A mass transfer), whose outcome is difficult to derive from single star models. For this work, we used a large grid of detailed binary evolution models for primaries in the initial mass range 10–40 M⊙ with a Large and Small Magellanic Cloud composition, to derive analytic fits for the key quantities needed in rapid binary evolution codes, that is, the duration of core hydrogen-burning, and the resulting donor star mass. We find that systems with shorter orbital periods produce up to 50% lighter stripped donors and have a lifetime up to 30% larger than wider systems. Both quantities strongly depend on the initial binary orbital period, but the initial mass ratio and the mass-transfer efficiency of the binary have little impact on the outcome. We used Legacy Survey photometric data to probe the stellar halo in multiple directions of the sky using a probabilistic methodology to identify blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars. The measured average radial density profile follows a double power law in the range 5 < rgc/kpc < 120, with a density break at rgc ≈ 20 kpc. This description, however, falls short, depending on the chosen line of sight, with some regions showing no signature of a break in the profile and a wide range of density slopes, such as an outer slope −5.5 ≲ αout ≲ −4, pointing towards a highly anisotropic stellar halo. This explains, in part, the wide range of density profiles reported in the literature owing to different tracers and sky coverage. Using our detailed 3D stellar halo density map, we quantified the shape of the Pisces overdensity associated with the transient wake response of the Galaxy's (dark) halo to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Measured in the LMC's coordinate system, Pisces stands above the background, is 60° long and 25° wide, and is aligned with the LMC's orbit. This would correspond to a wake width of ∼32 kpc at ∼70 kpc. We do not find a statistically significant signature of the collective response in density as previously reported in the literature measured with K giant stars, despite our larger numbers. Context. In modern Galactic astronomy, stellar spectroscopy plays a pivotal role in complementing large photometric and astrometric surveys and enabling deeper insights to be gained into the chemical evolution and chemo-dynamical mechanisms at play in the Milky Way and its satellites. Nonetheless, the use of different instruments and dedicated pipelines in various spectroscopic surveys can lead to differences in the derived spectroscopic parameters. Aims. Efforts to homogenise these surveys onto a common scale are essential to maximising their scientific legacy. To this aim, we developed the SPECTROTRANSLATOR, a data-driven deep neural network algorithm that converts spectroscopic parameters from the base of one survey (base A) to that of another (base B). Methods. SPECTROTRANSLATOR is comprised of two neural networks: an intrinsic network, where all the parameters play a role in computing the transformation, and an extrinsic network, where the outcome for one of the parameters depends on all the others, but not the reverse. The algorithm also includes a method to estimate the importance that the various parameters play in the conversion from base A to B. Results. To demonstrate the workings of the algorithm, we applied it to transform effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, [Mg/Fe], and line-of-sight velocity from the base of GALAH DR3 into the APOGEE-2 DR 17 base. We demonstrate the efficiency of the SPECTROTRANSLATOR algorithm to translate the spectroscopic parameters from one base to another, directly using parameters by the survey teams. We were able to achieve a similar performance than previous works that have performed a similar type of conversion but using the full spectrum, rather than the spectroscopic parameters. This allowed us to reduce the computational time and use the output of pipelines optimised for each survey. By combining the transformed GALAH catalogue with the APOGEE-2 catalogue, we studied the distribution of [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] across the Galaxy and we found that the median distribution of both quantities present a vertical asymmetry at large radii. We attribute it to the recent perturbations generated by the passage of a dwarf galaxy across the disc or by the infall of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Conclusions. Several aspects still need to be refined, such as the question of the optimal way to deal with regions of the parameter space meagrely populated by stars in the training sample. However, SPECTROTRANSLATOR has already demonstrated its capability and is poised to play a crucial role in standardising various spectroscopic surveys onto a unified framework. Context. The nature of mass-loss in massive stars is one of the most important and difficult to constrain processes in the evolution of massive stars. The largest observational uncertainties are related to the influence of metallicity and wind structure with optically thick clumps. Aims. We aim to constrain the wind parameters of sample of 18 O-type stars in the LMC, through analysis with stellar atmosphere and wind models including the effects of optically thick clumping. This will allow us to determine the most accurate spectroscopic mass-loss and wind structure properties of massive stars at sub-solar metallicity to date. This will allow us to gain insight into the impact of metallicity on massive stellar winds. Methods. Combining high signal to noise (S/N) ratio observations in the ultraviolet and optical wavelength ranges gives us access to diagnostics of multiple different ongoing physical processes in the stellar wind. We produce synthetic spectra using the stellar atmosphere modelling code FASTWIND, and reproduce the observed spectra using a genetic algorithm based fitting technique to optimise the input parameters. Results. We empirically constrain 15 physical parameters associated with the stellar and wind properties of O-type stars from the dwarf, giant and supergiant luminosity classes. These include temperature, surface gravity, surface abundances, rotation, macroturbulence and wind parameters. Conclusions. We find, on average, mass-loss rates a factor of 4–5 lower than those from theoretical predictions commonly used in stellar-evolution calculations, but in good agreement with more recent theoretical predictions. In the 'weak-wind' regime we find massloss rates orders of magnitude below any theoretical predictions. We find a positive correlation of clumping factors with effective temperature with an average fcl = 14 ± 8 for the full sample. It is clear that there is a difference in the porosity of the wind in velocity space, and interclump density, above and below a temperature of roughly 38 kK. Above 38 kK an average 46 ± 24% of the wind velocity span is covered by clumps and the interclump density is 10–30% of the mean wind. Below an effective temperature of roughly 38 kK there must be additional light leakage for supergiants. For dwarf stars at low temperatures there is a statistical preference for very low clump velocity spans, however it is unclear if this can be physically motivated as there are no clearly observable wind signatures in UV diagnostics. Constraints on the binary fraction of massive young stellar objects (mYSOs) are important for binary and massive star formation theory. Here, we present speckle imaging of 34 mYSOs located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (1/2 Z ⊙) and Small Magellanic Cloud (∼1/5 Z ⊙), probing projected separations in the 2000 to 20,000 au (at angular scales of 0.″02–0.″2) range, for stars above 8 M ⊙. We find two wide binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (from a sample of 23 targets), but none in a sample of 11 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, leading us to adopt a wide binary fraction of 9% ± 5% and <5%, respectively. We rule out a wide binary fraction greater than 35% in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 38% in the Small Magellanic Cloud at the 99% confidence level. This is in contrast to the wide binary fraction of mYSOs in the Milky Way (presumed to be 1 Z ⊙), which within the physical parameter space probed by this study is ∼15%–60% from the literature. We argue that while selection effects could be responsible for the lower binary fraction observed, it is more likely that there are underlying physical mechanisms responsible for the observed properties. This indicates that metallicity and environmental effects may influence the formation of wide binaries among massive stars. Future larger, more statistically significant samples of high-mass systems in low-metallicity environments for comparison to the Milky Way, are essential to confirm or repudiate our claim. We obtain a quantitative star formation history (SFH) of a shell-like structure ('shell') located in the northeastern part of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We use the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History to derive colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), reaching below the oldest main-sequence turnoff, from which we compute the SFHs with CMD-fitting techniques. We present, for the first time, a novel technique that uses red clump (RC) stars from the CMDs to assess and account for the SMC's line-of-sight depth effect present during the SFH derivation. We find that accounting for this effect recovers a more accurate SFH. We quantify an |$\sim$| 7 kpc line-of-sight depth present in the CMDs, in good agreement with depth estimates from RC stars in the northeastern SMC. By isolating the stellar content of the northeastern shell and incorporating the line-of-sight depth into our calculations, we obtain an unprecedentedly detailed SFH. We find that the northeastern shell is primarily composed of stars younger than |$\sim$| 500 Myr, with significant star formation enhancements around |$\sim$| 250 and |$\sim$| 450 Myr. These young stars are the main contributors to the shell's structure. We show synchronicity between the northeastern shell's SFH with the Large Magellanic Cloud's (LMC) northern arm, which we attribute to the interaction history of the SMC with the LMC and the Milky Way (MW) over the past |$\sim$| 500 Myr. Our results highlight the complex interplay of ram pressure stripping and the influence of the MW's circumgalactic medium in shaping the SMC's northeastern shell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the non-adiabatic effect of time-dependent deformations in the Milky Way (MW) halo potential on stellar streams. Specifically, we consider the MW's response to the infall of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and how this impacts our ability to recover the spherically averaged MW mass profile from observation using stream actions. Previously, action clustering methods have only been applied to static or adiabatic MW systems to constrain the properties of the host system. We use a time-evolving MW–LMC simulation described by basis function expansions. We find that for streams with realistic observational uncertainties on shorter orbital periods and without close encounters with the LMC, e.g. GD-1, the radial action distribution is sufficiently clustered to locally recover the spherical MW mass profile across the stream radial range within a |$2\sigma$| confidence interval determined using a Fisher information approach. For streams with longer orbital periods and close encounters with the LMC, e.g. Orphan–Chenab (OC), the radial action distribution disperses as the MW halo has deformed non-adiabatically. Hence, for OC streams generated in potentials that include an MW halo with any deformations, action clustering methods will fail to recover the spherical mass profile within a |$2\sigma$| uncertainty. Finally, we investigate whether the clustering of stream energies can provide similar constraints. Surprisingly, we find for OC-like streams, the recovered spherically averaged mass profiles demonstrate less sensitivity to the time-dependent deformations in the potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The galactic tidal interaction is a possible mechanism to trigger active star formation in galaxies. Recent analyses using H  i data in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) proposed that the tidally driven H  i flow, the L-component, is colliding with the LMC disk, the D-component, and is triggering high-mass star formation toward the active star-forming regions R136 and N44. In order to explore the role of the collision over the entire LMC disk, we investigated the I-component, the collision-compressed gas between the L- and D-components, over the LMC disk, and found that |$74\%$| of the O/WR stars are located toward the I-component, suggesting their formation in the colliding gas. We compared four star-forming regions (R136, N44, N11, and the N77–N79–N83 complex). We found a positive correlation between the number of high-mass stars and the compressed gas pressure generated by collisions, suggesting that pressure may be a key parameter in star formation. The interactions between the Magellanic Clouds significantly affect the shape and distribution of the young stellar population, particularly in the periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We present the first far-UV (FUV) map of the north-east SMC-Shell region using the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. The detected FUV stars are combined with Gaia Early Data Release 3 data to create a FUV–optical catalogue of ∼14 400 stars. FUV–optical colour-magnitude diagrams are used along with isochrones to estimate the stellar ages. The detected stars are formed in multiple episodes. We identified two episodes of star formation (∼60 and ∼260 Myr ago), where the episode at ∼260 Myr is linked to the recent interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the episode at ∼60 Myr is linked to the pericentric passage of the SMC around our Galaxy. The median proper motion (PM) and velocity dispersion are found to be similar to the SMC main body, indicating that this region has not experienced significant tidal effects. The FUV stellar surface density and the dispersion in PM suggest that the extent of the inner SMC in the north-east direction to be around 2.2°. We detect arm-like and arc-like structures in the FUV stellar density map, and their kinematics appear to be similar to the SMC main body. These extended outer features are the spatial stellar overdensities formed over multiple episodes of star formation, but without apparent kinematic distinction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. CF+ has been established as a valuable diagnostic tool for investigating photodissociation regions (PDRs) and fluorine abundances in the Milky Way. However, its role in extragalactic environments remains largely uncharted. Aims. Our objective is to explore the significance of CF+ in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and assess its utility as a probe for examining C+ and fluorine abundances in external galaxies. Methods. We performed pointed CF+ observations toward an active star-forming region, N113 in the LMC, using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment 12 m submillimeter telescope. Results. We report the first discovery of CF+ in the LMC through the successful detection of the CF+ (2→1) and (3→2) lines. The excitation models indicate that CF+ emission originates from dense PDRs characterized by an H2 number density of (0.5–7.9) × 104 cm−3 in N113. Our observations provide the first constraint on the fluorine abundance in molecular clouds in the LMC, ≲1.7 × 10−9. This value is about an order of magnitude lower than those previously measured toward red giants in the LMC, indicative of fluorine deficiency in the molecular gas. The estimated column density ratio between C+ and CF+ appears to be lower than the anticipated equilibrium ratio derived from the fluorine abundance in red giants. Both phenomena can be explained by the deficiency of CF+ caused by the freeze-out of its primary chemical precursor, HF, onto dust grains. Conclusions. The deficiency of CF+ within molecular clouds suggests that the measurements presented in this work serve exclusively as conservative estimates, establishing lower bounds for both the fluorine abundance and C+ column densities in external galaxies. The majority of massive stars are formed in multiple systems, and at some point during their life, they interact with their companions via mass transfer. This interaction typically leads to the primary shedding its outer envelope, resulting in the formation of a "stripped star". Classically, stripped stars are expected to quickly contract to become hot and UV-bright helium stars. Surprisingly, recent optical spectroscopic surveys have unveiled many stripped stars that are much larger and cooler, appearing "puffed up" and overlapping with the Main Sequence (MS) in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. Here, we study the evolutionary nature of puffed-up stripped (PS) stars and the duration of this enigmatic phase using the stellar-evolution code MESA. We computed grids of binary models at four metallicities: Solar (Z⊙ = 0.017), Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, Z = 0.0068), Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC, Z = 0.0034), and Z = 0.1 Z⊙. Contrary to previous assumptions, we find that stripped stars regain thermal equilibrium shortly after the end of mass transfer and maintain it during most of the PS phase. Their further contraction towards hot and compact He stars is determined by the rate at which the residual H-rich envelope is depleted, with the main agents being H-shell burning (dominant for M ≲ 50 M⊙) and mass-loss in winds. The duration of the PS star phase is approximately 10% of the core-He burning lifetime (1% total lifetime) and up to 100 times more than the thermal timescale. It decreases with increasing mass and luminosity and increases with metallicity. We explored several factors influencing PS star lifetimes: orbital period, mass ratio, winds, and semiconvection. We further carried out a simple binary population synthesis estimation, finding that ∼0.5–0.7% of all the stars with log (L/L⊙) > 3.7 may, in fact, be PS stars. Our results indicate that tens to hundreds of PS stars in post-interaction binaries may be hiding in the MS population, disguised as 'normal' stars: ∼100 (∼280) in the SMC (LMC) and ∼1500 in the Milky Way. Their true nature may be revealed by spectroscopically measured low surface gravities, high N enrichment, and likely slow rotation rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a basis for an absolute reference system for astrometric studies. A system like this at the far side of nearby galaxies is required to facilitate measuring of the proper motions of these galaxies. However, the foreground contamination from the galaxies themselves is a problem for the QSO identification. Aims. We search for new QSOs behind the two Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge, and the Magellanic Stream. Methods. We identify QSO candidates with a combination of near–infrared colors and variability criteria from the public ESO Visual and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) Magellanic Clouds (VMC) survey. We confirm their nature from broad emission lines with low-resolution optical spectroscopy. Results. We confirmed the QSO nature of 136 objects. They are distributed as follows: 12 behind the Large Magellanic Cloud, 37 behind the Small Magellanic Cloud, 63 behind the Bridge, and 24 behind the Stream. The QSOs span a redshift range from z~0.1 to z~2.9. A comparison of our quasar selection with the Quaia quasar catalog, based on Gaia low-resolution spectra, yields a selection and confirmation success rate of 6–19%, depending on whether the quality of the photometry, the magnitude ranges, and the colors are considered. Our candidate list is rather incomplete, but the objects in it are likely to be confirmed as quasars with a probability of ~90%. Finally, we report a list of 3609 objects in the entire VMC survey that match our color and variability selection criteria; only 1249 of them have Gaia counterparts. Conclusions. Our combined infrared color and variability criteria for the QSO selection prove to be efficient: ~90% of the observed candidates are bona fide QSOs and allow us to generate a list of new high-probability quasar candidates. The granulation of red supergiants (RSGs) in the Magellanic Clouds is systematically investigated by combining the latest RSG samples and light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae. The present RSG samples are first examined for foreground stars and possible misidentified sources, and the light curves are sequentially checked to remove the outliers by white noise and photometric quality. The Gaussian process (GP) regression is used to model the granulation, and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo is applied to derive the granulation amplitude σ and the period of the undamped oscillator ρ, as well as the damping timescale τ. The dimensionless quality factor Q is then calculated through Q = π τ / ρ. RSGs around Q = 1 / 2 are considered to have significant granulation signals and are used for further analysis. Combining granulation parameters with stellar parameters, robust scaling relations for the timescale ρ are established, while the scaling relations for amplitude σ are represented by a piecewise function, possibly related to the tendency of amplitudes in faint RSGs to converge toward a certain value. Comparing results between the Small Magellanic Cloud and the Large Magellanic Cloud confirms that amplitudes and timescales become larger with metallicity. In examining the scaling relations between the two galaxies, it is found that ρ is nearly independent of metallicity, whereas σ is more significantly affected by metallicity. The chemical complexity in low-metallicity hot cores has been confirmed by observations. We investigate the effect of varying physical parameters, such as temperature, density and the cosmic ray ionisation rate (CRIR), on the molecular abundance evolution in low-metallicity hot cores using the UMIST gas phase chemical model. CRIR had the strongest effect on molecular abundance. The resultant molecular abundances were divided into three categories with different trends in time evolution. We compared our results with the observations of hot cores in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our model fits best with the observations at a time of around 10 5 years after the evaporation of ice and at the CRIR of 1.36 × 10 − 16   s − 1 . The resultant abundances of the oxygen-bearing complex organic molecules (COMs), such as CH3OH, HCOOCH3 and CH3OCH3, do not fit with observations in the same physical condition and may be located in a different physical environment. Our results suggest that investigating the CRIR value is crucial to predict the molecular evolution in LMC hot cores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sensitivity of the MeerKAT radio interferometer is an opportunity to probe deeper into the population of rare and faint extragalactic pulsars. The TRAPUM (TRAnsients and PUlsars with MeerKAT) collaboration has conducted a radio-domain search for accelerated pulsars and transients in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This partially targeted survey, performed at L band (856–1712 MHz) with the core array of the MeerKAT telescope in 2-h integrations, is twice as sensitive as the latest SMC radio pulsar survey. We report the discovery of seven new SMC pulsars, doubling this galaxy's radio pulsar population and increasing the total extragalactic population by nearly a quarter. We also carried out a search for accelerated millisecond pulsars in the SMC globular cluster NGC 121 using the full array of MeerKAT. This improved the previous upper limit on pulsed radio emission from this cluster by a factor of 6. Our discoveries reveal the first radio pulsar-PWN systems in the SMC, with only one such system previously known outside our Galaxy (the 'Crab pulsar twin' in the Large Magellanic Cloud, PSR J0540−6919). We associate the 59 ms pulsar discovery PSR J0040−7337, now the fastest spinning radio pulsar in the SMC, with the bow-shock Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) of supernova remnant DEM S5. We also present a new young pulsar with a 79 ms period, PSR J0048−7317, in a PWN recently discovered in a MeerKAT radio continuum image. Using the multibeam capability of MeerKAT, we localized our pulsar discoveries, and two previous Murriyang discoveries, to a positional uncertainty of a few arcseconds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is expected to detect a wide variety of gravitational wave sources in the mHz band. Some of these signals will elude individual detection, instead contributing as confusion noise to one of several stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds (SGWBs) – notably including the 'Galactic foreground', a loud signal resulting from the superposition of millions of unresolved double white dwarf binaries (DWDs) in the Milky Way. It is possible that similar, weaker SGWBs will be detectable from other DWD populations in the local Universe, including the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use the Bayesian LISA Inference Package (blip) to investigate the possibility of an anisotropic SGWB generated by unresolved DWDs in the LMC. To do so, we compute the LMC SGWB from a realistic DWD population generated via binary population synthesis, simulate 4 years of time-domain data with blip comprised of stochastic contributions from the LMC SGWB and the LISA detector noise, and analyse this data with blip 's spherical harmonic anisotropic SGWB search. We also consider the case of spectral separation from the Galactic foreground. We present the results of these analyses and show, for the first time, that the unresolved DWDs in the LMC will comprise a significant SGWB for LISA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the second paper in a series, which studies the likelihood that some globular clusters (GCs) of the Milky Way (MW) could have originated from a dwarf satellite galaxy (DSG). Using a large suite of three-body simulations we determine the present-day orbital properties of 154 GCs that could have escaped from 41 MW DSGs over the past |$8\ \mathrm{Gyr}$|⁠. For the MW we considered two sets of static and dynamic models which account for the sustained growth of the MW since its birth. We focus on the Magellanic clouds and Sagittarius. We compare the apogalactic distance, eccentricity, and orbital inclination of the MW GCs with those of runaway GCs from DSGs, to constrain their possible ex-situ origin. We observe a positive correlation between a DSG mass and the dispersion of its runaway GCs in the orbital parameter space of (R ap, e). We provide tables of the identified MW GCs and their likely associated progenitors. In total, we find 29 (19 per cent) MW GCs which could be kinematically associated with MW DSGs. We report, for the first time, 6 and 10 new associations with the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Sagittarius, respectively. For the Sagittarius we predict a concentration of runaway GCs at large apogalactic distances of |$R_\mathrm{ap}\approx 275-375 \ \mathrm{kpc}$|⁠ , e ≈ 0.8, and a relative inclination of Δθ ≈ 20°. So far, there has not been any observed GCs with such orbital elements. Complemented with photometric and spectroscopic observations, and cosmological simulations, the findings from the present study could conclusively settle the debate over the in-situ versus ex-situ origin of the MW GCs. While 30 Dor C is a unique superbubble in the Large Magellanic Cloud for its luminous non-thermal X-ray emission, the thermal X-ray emission it emanates has not yet been thoroughly investigated and well constrained. Based on the separate ∼1 Ms deep XMM–Newton and Chandra observations, we report the discovery of the thermally emitting plasma in some portions of the western half of 30 Dor C. The thermal emission can be reproduced by a collisional-ionization-equilibrium plasma model with an average electron temperature of ∼0.4 keV. We find a significant overabundance of the intermediate-mass elements such as O, Ne, Mg, and Si, which may be indicative of a recent supernova explosion in 30 Dor C. Dynamical properties in combination with the information of the OB association LH 90 suggest that the internal post-main-sequence stars dominate the power of the superbubble and blow it out in the past ∼1 Myr. We present an atlas and follow-up spectroscopic observations of 87 thin stream-like structures detected with the STREAMFINDER algorithm in Gaia DR3, of which 28 are new discoveries. Here, we focus on using these streams to refine mass models of the Galaxy. Fits with a double-power-law halo with the outer power-law slope set to − β h = −3 yield an inner power-law slope of − γ h = - (0.97 − 0.21 + 0.17 ) , a scale radius of r 0 , h = 14.7 − 1.0 + 4.7 kpc , a halo density flattening q m, h = 0.75 ± 0.03, and a local dark matter density of ρ h,⊙ = 0.0114 ± 0.0007 M ⊙ pc−3. Freeing β yields β = 2.53 − 0.16 + 0.42 , but this value is heavily influenced by our chosen virial mass limit. The stellar disks are found to have a combined mass of 4.20 − 0.53 + 0.44 × 10 10 M ⊙ , with the thick disk contributing 12.4% ± 0.7% to the local stellar surface density. The scale lengths of the thin and thick disks are 2.17 − 0.08 + 0.18 and 1.62 − 0.13 + 0.72 kpc , respectively, while their scale heights are 0.347 − 0.010 + 0.007 and 0.86 − 0.02 + 0.03 kpc , respectively. The virial mass of the favored model is M 200 = 1.09 − 0.14 + 0.19 × 10 12 M ⊙ , while the mass inside of 50 kpc is M R <50 = 0.46 ± 0.03 × 1012 M ⊙. We introduce the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) into the derived potential models, and fit the Orphan stream therein, finding a mass for the LMC that is consistent with recent estimates. Some salient highlights include the nearby trailing arm of ω Cen, and a nearby very metal-poor stream that was once a satellite of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. The enrichment history of r -process elements has been imprinted on the stellar abundances that change in accordance with increasing metallicity in galaxies. Close examination of the [Eu/Fe] feature caused by stars in nearby galaxies, including the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), shows its perplexity. The decreasing trend of the [Eu/Fe] feature is followed by a nearly constant value; this trend is generally attributed to an onset of the delayed Fe release from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), which is the same interpretation of the [ α /Fe] feature. However, this feature appears in the LMC at [Fe/H] of approximately −0.7, which is significantly higher than that for the [ α /Fe] case (≈−2). This result potentially indicates the presence of an overlooked property of the r -process site that remains unseen in the study of the Milky Way. Here, we propose that this [Eu/Fe]-knee feature is created by a fade-out of core-collapse SNe producing r -process elements; these elements along with neutron star mergers (NSMs) promote the r -process enrichment under the condition for this specific SNe such that their occurrence is limited to a low-metallicity environment. This metallicity threshold for the occurrence rate of r -process SNe at a subsolar is nearly identical to that for long gamma-ray bursts whose origin may be connected to fast-rotating massive stars. Moreover, we reason that the contribution of Eu from NSMs is crucial to maintain a high [Eu/Fe] at an early stage in dwarf galaxies by a balance with Fe from SNe Ia; both enrichments via NSMs and SNe Ia proceed with similar delay time distributions. We characterize the Magellanic Corona, the warm gaseous halo around the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The Corona is a key ingredient in the formation of the Magellanic Stream and has recently been observed in high-ion absorption around the LMC. In this work, we present a suite of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations to constrain its total mass and temperature prior to the infall of the Magellanic Clouds to our Galaxy. We find that the LMC is able to host a stable Corona before and during its approach to the MW through to the present day. With a Magellanic Corona of >2 × 109 M ⊙ at 3 × 105 K, our simulations can reproduce the observed total mass of the neutral and ionized components of the Trailing Stream, the size of the LMC disk, the ionization fractions along the Stream, the morphology of the neutral gas, and the on-sky extent of the ionized gas. Context. Type II Cepheids (T2Cs) are the less frequently used counterparts of classical or type I Cepheids (CCs) which provide the primary calibration of the distance ladder for measuring the Hubble constant in the local Universe. In the era of the "Hubble tension", T2C variables together with the RR Lyrae stars and the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) can potentially provide non-CC-dependent calibration of the cosmic distance ladder. Aims. Our goal is to provide an absolute calibration of the period–luminosity, period–luminosity–colour, and period–Wesenheit relations (PL, PLC, and PW, respectively) of T2Cs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which traditionally serves as a crucial first anchor of the extragalactic distance ladder. Methods. We exploited time-series photometry in the near-infrared (NIR) Y,  J, and Ks bands for a sample of approximately 320 T2Cs in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). These observations were acquired during 2009–2018 in the context of the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), an ESO public survey. We supplemented the NIR photometry from the VMC survey with well-sampled optical light curves and accurate pulsation periods from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) IV survey and the Gaia mission. We used the best-quality NIR light curves to generate custom templates for modelling sparsely sampled light curves in YJKs bands. Results. The best-fitting YJKs template light curves were used to derive accurate and precise intensity-averaged mean magnitudes and pulsation amplitudes of 277 and 62 T2Cs in the LMC and SMC, respectively. We used optical and NIR mean magnitudes for different T2C subclasses (BLHer, WVir, and RVTau) to derive PL/PLC/PW relations in multiple bands, which were calibrated with the geometric distance to the LMC as derived from eclipsing binaries and with the Gaia parallaxes. We used our new empirical calibrations of PL and PW relations to obtain distances to 22 T2C-host Galactic globular clusters, which were found to be systematically smaller by ∼0.1 mag and 0.03−0.06 mag than in the literature when the zero points are calibrated with the distance of the LMC or Gaia parallaxes, respectively. Better agreement is found between our distances and those based on RR Lyrae stars in globular clusters, providing strong support for using these population II stars together with the TRGB for future distance scale studies. Massive stars are predominantly found in binaries and higher order multiples. While the period and eccentricity distributions of OB stars are now well established across different metallicity regimes, the determination of mass-ratios has been mostly limited to double-lined spectroscopic binaries. As a consequence, the mass-ratio distribution remains subject to significant uncertainties. Open questions include the shape and extent of the companion mass-function towards its low-mass end and the nature of undetected companions in single-lined spectroscopic binaries. In this contribution, we present the results of a large and systematic analysis of a sample of over 80 single-lined O-type spectroscopic binaries (SB1s) in the Milky Way and in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We report on the developed methodology, the constraints obtained on the nature of SB1 companions, the distribution of O star mass-ratios at LMC metallicity and the occurrence of quiescent OB+black hole binaries. Massive stars play crucial roles in astrophysical settings across cosmic history, and thus it is a fundamental problem to understand whether their formation processes are universal or diverse in various galactic environments. In particular, metallicity is the essential characteristic of cosmic evolution. Our theoretical studies have suggested some degrees of metallicity dependence of massive star formation. In the extremely metal-poor case of , protostellar disks are significantly unstable, and the photoionization feedback is more efficient. The core of the cluster R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud hosts the most massive stars known. The high mass-loss rates of these stars strongly impact their surroundings, as well as the evolution of the stars themselves. To quantify this impact accurate mass-loss rates are needed, however, uncertainty about the degree of inhomogeneity of the winds ('wind clumping'), makes mass-loss measurements uncertain. We combine optical and ultraviolet HST/STIS spectroscopy of 56 stars in the core of R136 in order to put constraints on the wind structure, improving the accuracy of the mass-loss rate measurements. We find that the winds are highly clumped, and use our measured mass-loss rates to test theoretical predictions. Furthermore we find, for the first time, tentative trends in the wind-structure parameters as a function of mass-loss rate, suggesting that the winds of stars with higher mass-loss rates are less clumped than those with lower mass-loss rates. In addition to being spectacular objects, very massive stars (VMS) are suspected to have a tremendous impact on their environment and on the whole cosmic evolution. The nucleosynthesis both during their advanced stages and their final explosion likely contribute greatly to the overall enrichment of the Universe. Their resulting Supernovae are candidates for the most superluminous events and their extreme conditions lead also to very important radiative and mechanical feedback effects, from local to cosmic scale. With the recent implementation of a new equation of state in the GENEC stellar evolution code, appropriate for describing the conditions in the central regions of very massive stars in the advanced phases, we present new results on VMS evolution from Population III to solar metallicity. We explore their evolution and final fate as potential (P)PISNe across the cosmic time. We compare our results to recent spectroscopic observations of VMS in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We also underline the important radiative feedback of Population III VMS during the reionization epoch and the chemical contribution of these stars at high metallicity, especially for short-lived radionuclei. We study here a novel application of Kim and Lee charged wormholes assuming them to be dark halo objects playing the role of lenses in the Galactic microlensing with source stars belonging to the Galactic Bulge and the Large Magellanic Cloud. First, we observe that both the backreacted scalar (α ) and electrically (Q) charged wormholes have the same zero ADM mass as has the background Ellis–Bronnikov wormhole having a special equation of state parameter γ = - 1 . In particular, we argue that, for α ≠ 0 , the solution formally resembles, but can at best be sourcewise different from, that of the background wormhole. The charge ( Q ≠ 0 ) thus provides an extra degree of freedom that introduces a non-trivial redshift function Φ to the background, alters its throat radius to r th , yet keeps the wormhole massless. Second, we focus on this electrically charged case and calculate the light deflection angle up to 4th PPN order, analyze the effect of Q on the lensing observables such as the image positions, magnification, centroid and time delay of images of the source stars. Third, we analyze the probabilistic features such as optical depth and event rate estimated on the basis of the hypothesis that the wormhole lens could be bound or unbound to our Galaxy. Finally, we report an intriguing qualitative prediction that, compared to the Schwarzschild black hole, the Paczyński light curves of the electrically charged wormhole are much dimmer that also show characteristic gutters at the times the source enters and exits the Einstein ring. The gutters gradually come together as Q approaches the extreme limit r th 2 , at which the Einstein radius R E vanishes so that the source crosses it instantly. Dark matter haloes enter a phase of gravothermal core-collapse in the presence of self-interactions. This phase is expected to be subdominant given the long time-scales involved. However, it has been shown that collapse is accelerated in subhaloes in strong tidal environments. Cosmological simulations in ΛCDM give complete distributions of subhalo orbits and their profiles. We use these to estimate the fraction of the subhaloes in different host halo environments that are in the core-collapse phase. Our hosts range from the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC)-like hosts to clusters. We use fluid simulations of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) to evolve subhaloes in their hosts, including the effect of tidal truncation at the time of pericentre crossing. We find, for parameters that allow the interaction cross-section to be high at dwarf scales, at least |$10\%$| of all subhaloes are expected to have intrinsically collapsed within Hubble time up to the group mass host scales. This fraction increases significantly, becoming at least 20% when tidal interactions are considered. To identify these objects in observations, we find that we need to measure their densities at very small radial scales, where the subhaloes show a bimodal distribution of densities or we need to measure the slopes of their inner density profiles near the scale radius, which are much steeper than NFW slopes. Current measurements of central slopes of classical dwarfs do not show preference for being completely collapsed, however they are consistent with being cored or in a phase of transition between expansion and collapse. We present the first internally consistent set of [Fe/H] values for 14 of the 15 old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We make use of periods and amplitudes of fundamental mode (ab-type) RR Lyrae stars in the vicinity of these LMC clusters, mostly taken from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) data base, in order to calculate metallicities for the clusters. Our data set contains a total of 417 ab-type cluster RR Lyrae stars (289 from OGLE and the rest from the literature) and yields a set of homogeneous metallicities for 14 old LMC globular clusters all on the Zinn and West scale. No previously published work contains metallicities for as many of the old LMC globular clusters as presented herein. An analysis of a subset of our abundances compared with seven other metallicity studies in the peer-reviewed literature indicates very little overall agreement between these [Fe/H] values suggesting that significantly more effort needs to be devoted to measuring internally consistent [Fe/H]s for the old LMC globular clusters. The Magellanic Cloud system represents a unique laboratory for study of both interacting dwarf galaxies and the ongoing process of the formation of the Milky Way and its halo. We focus on one aspect of this complex, three-body interaction – the dynamical perturbation of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and specifically potential tidal effects on the SMC's eastern side. Using Gaia astrometry and the precise radial velocities (RVs) and multielement chemical abundances from Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) Data Release 17, we explore the well-known distance bimodality on the eastern side of the SMC. Through estimated stellar distances, proper motions, and RVs, we characterize the kinematics of the two populations in the bimodality and compare their properties with those of SMC populations elsewhere. Moreover, while all regions explored by APOGEE seem to show a single chemical enrichment history, the metallicity distribution function (MDF), of the 'far' stars on the eastern periphery of the SMC is found to resemble that for the more metal-poor fields of the western periphery, whereas the MDF for the 'near' stars on the eastern periphery resembles that for stars in the SMC Centre. The closer eastern periphery stars also show RVs (corrected for SMC rotation and bulk motion) that are, on average, approaching us relative to all other SMC populations sampled. We interpret these trends as evidence that the near stars on the eastern side of the SMC represent material pulled out of the central SMC as part of its tidal interaction with the LMC. The precise definition of the lower mass limit of red supergiant stars (RSGs) is an open question in astrophysics and does not attract much attention. Here, we assemble a spectroscopic evolved cool star sample with 6602 targets, including RSGs, asymptotic giant branch stars, and red giant branch stars, in the Large Magellanic Cloud based on Gaia DR3 and Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV/APOGEE-2. The reference spectrum of each stellar population is built according to the quantile range of relative intensity (1% ∼ 99%). Five different methods, e.g., χ 2, cosine similarity, machine learning (ML), equivalent width, and line ratio, are used in order to separate different stellar populations. ML and χ 2 provide the best and relatively consistent prediction of a certain population. The derived lower limit of the RSG population is able to reach the K s -band tip of the red giant branch (K s ≈12.0 mag), indicating a luminosity as low as about 103.5 L ⊙, which corresponds to a stellar radius of only about 100 R ⊙. Given the mass–luminosity relation of L / L ⊙ = f (M / M ⊙) 3 with f ≈ 15.5 ± 3 and taking into account the mass loss of faint RSGs up to now, the minimal initial mass of the RSG population would be about 6.1 ± 0.4 M ⊙, which is much lower than the traditional threshold of 8 M ⊙ for the massive stars. This is the first spectroscopic evidence, indicating that the lower mass limit of the RSG population is around 6 M ⊙. Upcoming large-scale spectroscopic surveys with e.g. WEAVE (William herschel telescope Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer) and 4MOST (4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope) will provide thousands of spectra of massive stars, which need to be analysed in an efficient and homogeneous way. Usually, studies of massive stars are limited to samples of a few hundred objects, which pushes current spectroscopic analysis tools to their limits because visual inspection is necessary to verify the spectroscopic fit. Often uncertainties are only estimated rather than derived and prior information cannot be incorporated without a Bayesian approach. In addition, uncertainties of stellar atmospheres and radiative transfer codes are not considered as a result of simplified, inaccurate, or incomplete/missing physics or, in short, idealized physical models. Here, we address the question of 'How to compare an idealized model of complex objects to real data?' with an empirical Bayesian approach and maximum a posteriori approximations. We focus on application to large-scale optical spectroscopic studies of complex astrophysical objects like stars. More specifically, we test and verify our methodology on samples of OB stars in 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Clouds using a grid of fastwind model atmospheres. Our spectroscopic model de-idealization analysis pipeline takes advantage of the statistics that large samples provide by determining the model error to account for the idealized stellar atmosphere models, which are included into the error budget. The giant spiral galaxy M101 is host to the nearest recent Type Ia supernova (SN 2011fe) and thus has been extensively monitored in the near-infrared to study the late-time light curve of the SN. Leveraging this existing baseline of observations, we derive the first Mira-based distance to M101 by discovering and classifying a sample of 211 Miras with periods ranging from 240–400 days in the SN field. Combined with new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR channel observations, our data set totals 11 epochs of F110W (HST YJ) and 13 epochs of F160W (HST H) data spanning ∼2900 days. We adopt absolute calibrations of the Mira period–luminosity relation based on geometric distances to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the water megamaser host galaxy NGC 4258, and find μ M101 = 29.10 ± 0.06 mag. This distance is in 1 σ agreement with most other recent Cepheid and tip of the red giant branch distance measurements to M101. Including the previous Mira SN Ia host, NGC 1559, and SN 2005df, we determine the fiducial SN Ia peak luminosity, M B 0 = − 19.27 ± 0.09 mag. With the Hubble diagram of supernovae Ia, we derive H 0 = 72.37 ± 2.97 km s−1 Mpc−1, a 4.1% measurement of H 0 using Miras. We find excellent agreement with recent Cepheid distance ladder measurements of H 0 and confirm previous indications that the local universe value of H 0 is higher than the early universe value at ∼95% confidence.
