The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on board the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite has been widely used in climate and environment studies to obtain the vertical profiles of atmospheric aerosols. To retrieve the vertical profile of aerosol extinction, the CALIOP algorithm assumes column-averaged lidar ratios based on a clustering of aerosol optical properties measured at surface stations. On one hand, these lidar ratio assumptions may not be appropriate or representative at certain locations. One the other hand, the two-wavelength design of CALIOP has the potential to constrain aerosol size information, which has not been considered in the operational algorithm. In this study, we present a modified inversion algorithm to simultaneously retrieve aerosol extinction and effective radius profiles using two-wavelength elastic lidars such as CALIOP. Specifically, a lookup table is built to relate the lidar ratio with the Ångström exponent calculated using aerosol extinction at the two wavelengths, and the lidar ratio is then determined iteratively without a priori assumptions. The retrieved two-wavelength extinction at each layer is then converted to the particle effective radius assuming a lognormal distribution. The algorithm is tested on synthetic data, Raman lidar measurements and then finally the real CALIOP backscatter measurements. Results show improvements over the CALIPSO operational algorithm by comparing with ground-based Raman lidar profiles.

Light propagation in Photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which can nowadays involve complex systems of light-guiding structures, is measured with different approaches(Nuzhdin et al., 2020, Lončar et al., 2002, Hopman et al., 2007, Morichetti et al., 2014, Sapienza et al., 2012, Vesseur et al., 2007). An interferometric polarization-sensitive measurement of the evanescent fields of these structures provides insight in the performance of the circuit detects possible malfunction with sub-wavelength precision(Engelen et al., 2007, Gersen et al., 2005, Barwick et al., 2009). We demonstrate a Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) measurement on coupled ring resonators that shows how the guided modes evolve as they propagate across the optical chip. Analysis of the measurements provides information about intensity distribution of the two polarization components (TE and TM) and their spatial confinement. The data validates our methodology and opens new possibilities for analysis of signal propagation in prototyping and optimization of integrated optical systems. Direct observation of polarization state of the guided modes allows for clear understanding of mode conversion in coupling systems.

Spectropolarimetric results of Fraunhofer lines between 516.3 and 532.6 nm are presented in local upper solar chromosphere and inner corona below a height of about 0.04 solar radius above the solar limb. The data were acquired on 2013 November 3 during a total solar eclipse in Gabon by the prototype Fiber Arrayed Solar Optical Telescope. It is found that the linear polarizations of the Fraunhofer lines in these layers depend strongly on specific spectral lines and positions. A Fraunhofer line at Mg i b _1 518.4 nm can have a polarization amplitude up to 0.36% with respect to the continuum polarization level, while polarizations of lines like Fe i /Cr i 524.7 nm are often merged in the noise level of 6.0 × 10 ^−4 . The polarizations of the Fraunhofer lines, like the emission ones and the continuum, increase with height as a whole trend, and their amplitudes can be close to those of emission ones yielded in close positions, and generally larger than those of the continuum. Rotations of the polarization directions of the Fraunhofer lines are often accompanied by variations in their polarization amplitudes and profile shapes. It is also judged from these polarimetric properties, along with other evidence, that neutral metal atoms exist in these atmospheric layers.

Abstract By analyzing e + e − annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb −1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, the first observation of the semileptonic decays D 0 → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e $$ {D}^0\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ and D + → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e $$ {D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ is reported. In the hypothesis that all events correspond to K 1(1270) decays, the branching fractions are measured to be B D 0 → K 1 1270 − → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e = 1.69 − 0.46 + 0.53 ± 0.15 × 10 − 4 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}\left(\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0\right){e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.69}_{-0.46}^{+0.53}\pm 0.15\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ and B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e = 1.47 − 0.40 + 0.45 ± 0.14 × 10 − 4 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0\left(\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right){e}^{+}{\nu}^e\right)=\left({1.47}_{-0.40}^{+0.45}\pm 0.14\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ with statistical significance of 5.4σ and 5.6σ, respectively. When combined with measurements of the K 1(1270) → K + π − π decays, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be B D 0 → K 1 1270 − e + ν e = 1.08 − 0.13 − 0.10 + 0.14 + 0.08 ± 0.21 × 10 − 3 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.08}_{-0.13-0.10}^{+0.14+0.08}\pm 0.21\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ and B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 e + ν e = 1.70 − 0.23 + 0.26 ± 0.13 ± 0.35 × 10 − 3 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.70}_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\pm 0.13\pm 0.35\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third uncertainties originate from the assumed branching fractions of the K 1(1270) → Kππ decays.

Having knowledge of the drop size distribution (DSD) is of particular interest to researchers as it is widely applied to quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) methods. Polarimetric radar measurements have previously been utilized to derive DSD curve characteristics frequently modeled as a gamma distribution. Likewise, approaches using dual-frequency measurements have shown positive results. Both cases have relied on the need to constrain the relationship between the DSD parameters based on location or assumed weather conditions. This paper presents a methodology for retrieving the DSD parameters using the dual-frequency and polarimetric nature of measurements from a unique data set taken at co-located S-band and C-band dual-polarization radars. Using the reflectivity and differential-phase measurements from each radar, an optimization routine employing particle swarm optimization (PSO) and T-matrix computation of radar parameters is able to accurately retrieve the gamma distribution parameters without the constraints required in previous methods. Retrieved results are compared to known truth data collected using a network of OTT Parsivel disdrometers in Taiwan in order to assess the success of this procedure.

Tropical tropospheric ozone (TTO) is important for the global radiation budget because the longwave radiative effect of tropospheric ozone is higher in the tropics than midlatitudes. In recent decades the TTO burden has increased, partly due to the ongoing shift of ozone precursor emissions from midlatitude regions toward the Equator. In this study, we assess the distribution and trends of TTO using ozone profiles measured by high-quality in situ instruments from the IAGOS (In-Service Aircraft for a Global Observing System) commercial aircraft, the SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes) network, and the ATom (Atmospheric Tomographic Mission) aircraft campaign, as well as six satellite records reporting tropical tropospheric column ozone (TTCO): TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), OMI/Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS)/Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2), Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), and Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI)/Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME2). With greater availability of ozone profiles across the tropics we can now demonstrate that tropical India is among the most polluted regions (e.g., western Africa, tropical South Atlantic, Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Indonesia), with present-day 95th percentile ozone values reaching 80 nmol mol−1 in the lower free troposphere, comparable to midlatitude regions such as northeastern China and Korea. In situ observations show that TTO increased between 1994 and 2019, with the largest mid- and upper-tropospheric increases above India, Southeast Asia, and Malaysia and Indonesia (from 3.4 ± 0.8 to 6.8 ± 1.8 nmol mol−1 decade−1), reaching 11 ± 2.4 and 8 ± 0.8 nmol mol−1 decade−1 close to the surface (India and Malaysia–Indonesia, respectively). The longest continuous satellite records only span 2004–2019 but also show increasing ozone across the tropics when their full sampling is considered, with maximum trends over Southeast Asia of 2.31 ± 1.34 nmol mol−1 decade−1 (OMI) and 1.69 ± 0.89 nmol mol−1 decade−1 (OMI/MLS). In general, the sparsely sampled aircraft and ozonesonde records do not detect the 2004–2019 ozone increase, which could be due to the genuine trends on this timescale being masked by the additional uncertainty resulting from sparse sampling. The fact that the sign of the trends detected with satellite records changes above three IAGOS regions, when their sampling frequency is limited to that of the in situ observations, demonstrates the limitations of sparse in situ sampling strategies. This study exposes the need to maintain and develop high-frequency continuous observations (in situ and remote sensing) above the tropical Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, western Africa, and South Asia in order to estimate accurate and precise ozone trends for these regions. In contrast, Southeast Asia and Malaysia–Indonesia are regions with such strong increases in ozone that the current in situ sampling frequency is adequate to detect the trends on a relatively short 15-year timescale.

Abstract The performance of superconducting qubits is degraded by a poorly characterized set of energy sources breaking the Cooper pairs responsible for superconductivity, creating a condition often called “quasiparticle poisoning”. Both superconducting qubits and low threshold dark matter calorimeters have observed excess bursts of quasiparticles or phonons that decrease in rate with time. Here, we show that a silicon crystal glued to its holder exhibits a rate of low-energy phonon events that is more than two orders of magnitude larger than in a functionally identical crystal suspended from its holder in a low-stress state. The excess phonon event rate in the glued crystal decreases with time since cooldown, consistent with a source of phonon bursts which contributes to quasiparticle poisoning in quantum circuits and the low-energy events observed in cryogenic calorimeters. We argue that relaxation of thermally induced stress between the glue and crystal is the source of these events.

Abstract With a sample of (10087 ± 44) × 106 J/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, we analyze the decays η′ → π + π − l + l − (l = e, μ) via the process J/ψ → γη′. The branching fractions are measured to be B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (η′ → π + π − e + e − ) = (2.45 ± 0.02(stat.) ± 0.08(syst.)) × 10 −3 and B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (η′ → π + π − μ + μ − ) = (2.16 ± 0.12(stat.) ± 0.06(syst.)) × 10 −5, and the ratio is B η ′ → π + π − e + e − B η ′ → π + π − μ + μ − = 113.4 ± 0.9 stat . ± 3.7 syst . $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\eta}^{\prime}\to {\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{e}^{+}{e}^{-}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\eta}^{\prime}\to {\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)}=113.4\pm 0.9\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 3.7\left(\textrm{syst}.\right) $$ . In addition, by combining the η′ → π + π − e + e − and η′ → π + π − μ + μ − decays, the slope parameter of the electromagnetic transition form factor is measured to be b η′ = 1.30 ± 0.19 (GeV/c 2) −2, which is consistent with previous measurements from BESIII and theoretical predictions from the VMD model. The asymmetry in the angle between the π + π − and l + l − decay planes, which has the potential to reveal the CP-violation originating from an unconventional electric dipole transition, is also investigated. The asymmetry parameters are determined to be A CP η ′ → π + π − e + e − = − 0.21 ± 0.73 stat . ± 0.01 syst . % $$ {\mathcal{A}}_{CP}\left({\eta}^{\prime}\to {\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{e}^{+}{e}^{-}\right)=\left(-0.21\pm 0.73\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)\right)\% $$ and A CP η ′ → π + π − μ + μ − = 0.62 ± 4.71 stat . ± 0.08 syst . % $$ {\mathcal{A}}_{CP}\left({\eta}^{\prime}\to {\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=\left(0.62\pm 4.71\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.08\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)\right)\% $$ , implying that no evidence of CP-violation is observed at the present statistics. Finally, an axion-like particle is searched for via the decay η′ → π + π − a, a → e + e − , and upper limits of the branching fractions are presented for the mass assumptions of the axion-like particle in the range of 0 − 500 MeV/c 2.

Abstract We measured the Born cross sections for the process e + e − → ωη′ at 22 center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. We observed a resonant structure with a statistical significance of 9.6σ. A Breit-Wigner fit determines its mass to be M R = (2153 ± 30 ± 31) MeV/c 2 and its width to be Γ R = (167 ± 77 ± 7) MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

High-quality long-term observational records are essential to ensure appropriate and reliable trend detection of tropospheric ozone. However, the necessity of maintaining high sampling frequency, in addition to continuity, is often under-appreciated. A common assumption is that, so long as long-term records (e.g., a span of a few decades) are available, (1) the estimated trends are accurate and precise, and (2) the impact of small-scale variability (e.g., weather) can be eliminated. In this study, we show that the undercoverage bias (e.g., a type of sampling error resulting from statistical inference based on sparse or insufficient samples, such as once-per-week sampling frequency) can persistently reduce the trend accuracy of free tropospheric ozone, even if multi-decadal time series are considered. We use over 40 years of nighttime ozone observations measured at Mauna Loa, Hawaii (representative of the lower free troposphere), to make this demonstration and quantify the bias in monthly means and trends under different sampling strategies. We also show that short-term meteorological variability remains a cause of an inflated long-term trend uncertainty. To improve the trend precision and accuracy due to sampling bias, two remedies are proposed: (1) a data variability attribution of colocated meteorological influence can efficiently reduce estimation uncertainty and moderately reduce the impact of sparse sampling, and (2) an adaptive sampling strategy based on anomaly detection enables us to greatly reduce the sampling bias and produce more accurate trends using fewer samples compared to an intense regular sampling strategy.

Abstract In the human genome, heterozygous sites refer to genomic positions with a different allele or nucleotide variant on the maternal and paternal chromosomes. Resolving these allelic differences by chromosomal copy, also known as phasing, is achievable on a short-read sequencer when using a library preparation method that captures long-range genomic information. TELL-Seq is a library preparation that captures long-range genomic information with the aid of molecular identifiers (barcodes). The same barcode is used to tag the reads derived from the same long DNA fragment within a range of up to 200 kilobases (kb), generating linked-reads. This strategy can be used to phase an entire genome. Here, we introduce a TELL-Seq protocol developed for targeted applications, enabling the phasing of enriched loci of varying sizes, purity levels, and heterozygosity. To validate this protocol, we phased 2–200 kb loci enriched with different methods: CRISPR/Cas9-mediated excision coupled with pulse-field electrophoresis for the longest fragments, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated protection from exonuclease digestion for mid-size fragments, and long PCR for the shortest fragments. All selected loci have known clinical relevance: BRCA1, BRCA2, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, APC, PMS2, SCN5A-SCN10A, and PKI3CA. Collectively, the analyses show that TELL-Seq can accurately phase 2–200 kb targets using a short-read sequencer.

Abstract The rapid development of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells has resulted in laboratory-scale devices having power conversion efficiencies that are competitive with commercialised technologies. However, hybrid perovskite solar cells are yet to make an impact beyond the research community, with translation to large-area devices fabricated by industry-relevant manufacturing methods remaining a critical challenge. Here we report the first demonstration of hybrid perovskite solar cell modules, comprising serially-interconnected cells, produced entirely using industrial roll-to-roll printing tools under ambient room conditions. As part of this development, costly vacuum-deposited metal electrodes are replaced with printed carbon electrodes. A high-throughput experiment involving the analysis of batches of 1600 cells produced using 20 parameter combinations enabled rapid optimisation over a large parameter space. The optimised roll-to-roll fabricated hybrid perovskite solar cells show power conversion efficiencies of up to 15.5% for individual small-area cells and 11.0% for serially-interconnected cells in large-area modules. Based on the devices produced in this work, a cost of ~0.7 USD W−1 is predicted for a production rate of 1,000,000 m² per year in Australia, with potential for further significant cost reductions.

Introduction Asthma attacks are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality but are preventable in most if detected and treated promptly. However, the changes that occur physiologically and behaviourally in the days and weeks preceding an attack are not always recognised, highlighting a potential role for technology. The aim of this study ‘DIGIPREDICT’ is to identify early digital markers of asthma attacks using sensors embedded in smart devices including watches and inhalers, and leverage health and environmental datasets and artificial intelligence, to develop a risk prediction model to provide an early, personalised warning of asthma attacks.Methods and analysis A prospective sample of 300 people, 12 years or older, with a history of a moderate or severe asthma attack in the last 12 months will be recruited in New Zealand. Each participant will be given a smart watch (to assess physiological measures such as heart and respiratory rate), peak flow meter, smart inhaler (to assess adherence and inhalation) and a cough monitoring application to use regularly over 6 months with fortnightly questionnaires on asthma control and well-being. Data on sociodemographics, asthma control, lung function, dietary intake, medical history and technology acceptance will be collected at baseline and at 6 months. Asthma attacks will be measured by self-report and confirmed with clinical records. The collected data, along with environmental data on weather and air quality, will be analysed using machine learning to develop a risk prediction model for asthma attacks.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval has been obtained from the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee (2023 FULL 13541). Enrolment began in August 2023. Background Golf carts (GCs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are popular forms of personal transport. Although ATVs are considered adventurous and dangerous, GCs are perceived to be safer. Anecdotal experience suggests increasing numbers of both GC and ATV injuries, as well as high severity of GC injuries in children. Summary: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), the most common cause of kidney failure, is a frequent complication of diabetes and obesity, and yet to date, treatments to halt its progression are lacking. We analyze kidney single-cell transcriptomic profiles from DKD patients and two DKD mouse models at multiple time points along disease progression—high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice aged to 90–100 weeks and BTBR ob/ob mice (a genetic model)—and report an expanding population of macrophages with high expression of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) in HFD-fed mice. TREM2high macrophages are enriched in obese and diabetic patients, in contrast to hypertensive patients or healthy controls in an independent validation cohort. Trem2 knockout mice on an HFD have worsening kidney filter damage and increased tubular epithelial cell injury, all signs of worsening DKD. Together, our studies suggest that strategies to enhance kidney TREM2high macrophages may provide therapeutic benefits for DKD.

Abstract Background Serratia marcescens is a gram-negative bacterium that is widespread in the environment. S. marcescens bacteremia can be fatal during pregnancy and cause persistent chorioamnionitis. This study reports an outbreak of Serratia marcescens bloodstream infection (BSI) among high-risk pregnant women in an obstetric ward. The purpose of this study is to report our experience with the usefulness of the ATP test in hospital environmental management and to confirm that bloodstream infections of patients with the same strain were correlated by WGS testing. Methods This retrospective study collected the data of inpatients with S. marcescens bacteremia in obstetric ward for high-risk pregnant women from August 22, 2021, to October 14, 2021. We performed: an adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence test in the environment with a high-contact area; environmental culture; on-site monitoring and staff education; and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to evaluate genetic relationships among S. marcescens isolates. Results S. marcescens BSI occurred in four consecutive patients. None of the patients had central venous catheters. An ATP bioluminescence test revealed that high-contact areas and areas for injection preparation were not clean (≥ 1000 relative light units). However, S. marcescens was not identified in the environmental cultures, likely due to intensive environmental cleaning and discarding of potentially contaminated specimens before the culture test. On-site monitoring and education were conducted for 1 month. There were no further reports of BSI until 6 months after the last patient was discharged. WGS performed on three isolates from three patients indicated that the isolated S. marcescens was likely from the same strain. Conclusions We controlled an S. marcescens outbreak by improving environmental cleaning as well as education of and behavior changes in healthcare workers. Using the ATP bioluminescence test can provide feedback on environmental cleaning and education. WGS played a role in determining the spread of BSI caused by the same strain.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the safety and efficacy of laser treatment settings of micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation treatment in glaucoma patients and to evaluate the relationship between intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction and different treatment parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 74 eyes in 64 glaucoma patients with IOP over 21 mmHg or under 20 mmHg with visual field progression who underwent micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation treatment were included. Patients were divided into success and failure groups based on criteria of 20% IOP reduction rate. The predictive factors of IOP reduction between success and failure groups and the IOP reduction rates in the different treatment duration groups were evaluated. Predictive factors for IOP reduction were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression models. Results: Patients in the success group had significantly higher baseline IOP (median: 28.0 vs. 23.0 mmHg; P = 0.016) and longer treatment times (median: 240 vs. 160 s; P = 0.001). Treatment duration range between 200 and 240 s achieved significantly higher intraocular pressure reduction rates (47.8 ± 17.4%) than durations under 140 s (23.1 ± 14.2%). Univariate analysis showed that baseline IOP and treatment duration were significant contributing factors in IOP reduction. Multivariable analysis further demonstrated that treatment duration over 200 s was the significant predictive factor for IOP reduction. Conclusion: Treatment duration settings were the most significant factor of IOP reduction rates in micropulse cyclophotocoagulation. Customized therapy according to the target IOP reduction rate can be applied with different treatment duration settings to achieve optimal outcomes.

Abstract Based on e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis is performed for the process e + e − → K S 0 K L 0 $$ {K}_S^0{K}_L^0 $$ π 0. The results allow the Born cross sections of the process e + e − → K S 0 K L 0 $$ {K}_S^0{K}_L^0 $$ π 0, as well as its subprocesses e + e − → K ∗(892)0 K ¯ $$ \overline{K} $$ 0 and K 2 ∗ $$ {K}_2^{\ast } $$ (1430)0 K ¯ $$ \overline{K} $$ 0 to be measured. The Born cross sections for e + e − → K S 0 K L 0 $$ {K}_S^0{K}_L^0 $$ π 0 are consistent with previous measurements by BaBar, but with substantially improved precision. The Born cross section lineshape of the process e + e − K ∗(892)0 K ¯ $$ \overline{K} $$ 0 is consistent with a vector meson state around 2.2 GeV with a significance of 3.2σ. A Breit-Wigner fit determines its mass as M Y = (2164.7 ± 9.1 ± 3.1) MeV/c 2 and its width as Γ Y = (32.4 ± 21.0 ± 1.8) MeV.

Abstract Using (10087 ± 44) × 106 J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e + e − storage ring at the center-of-mass energy of s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 3.097 GeV, we present a search for the rare semi-muonic charmonium decay J/ψ → D − μ + ν μ + c.c.. Since no significant signal is observed, we set an upper limit of the branching fraction to be B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (J/ψ → D − μ + ν μ + c.c.) < 5.6 × 10 −7 at 90% confidence level. This is the first search for the weak decay of charmonium with a muon in the final state.

Abstract Objective Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has many treatment options and the Internet is an important resource for patients. The quality of information reviewed by patients about sleep surgery is unknown. We assessed readability, accessibility, actionability, and quality of online content for OSA surgeries. Study Design Review of webpages by 2 independent reviewers. Setting Internet‐based search. Methods We queried Google for sleep apnea surgery and included top 100 English language webpages. Content was scored by 2 reviewers using the Flesch‐Kincaid (FK), Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), JAMA benchmarks, CDC Clear Communication Index (CCI), and Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) understandability and actionability scores. Results Eighty‐seven webpages were evaluated including 40 hosted by academic hospitals, 23 private practices, 10 general knowledge, 4 national organizations, 3 industry, 3 non‐profit hospitals, and 2 government‐sponsored. Mean CCI ranged from 22.7% to 84.9%. No sources met the 90% CCI cutoff. Average PEMAT understandability score was 80.4% (±7.8; 62.5%‐93.3%), with 91% meeting the 70% standard score. Average PEMAT‐actionability score was 38.4% (±16.5; 0%‐70%), with 5% meeting the standard score. The average readability of webpages was the 10th grade reading level. Only 5% of pages met the recommended 6th grade reading level or lower. Only 21% of pages addressed surgical risks. Conclusion Most online resources regarding OSA surgery do not meet recommended standards for communication. Providers should be aware of limitations of materials when counseling patients on sleep surgery treatments. Future patient education resources should meet health communication and readability standards.

Background: Anesthesiology plays a crucial role in perioperative care, critical care, and pain management, impacting patient experiences and clinical outcomes. However, our understanding of the anesthesiology research landscape is limited. Accordingly, we initiated a data-driven analysis through topic modeling to uncover research trends, enabling informed decision-making and fostering progress within the field. Methods: The easyPubMed R package was used to collect 32,300 PubMed abstracts spanning from 2000 to 2022. These abstracts were authored by 737 Anesthesiology Principal Investigators (PIs) who were recipients of National Institute of Health (NIH) funding from 2010 to 2022. Abstracts were preprocessed, vectorized, and analyzed with the state-of-the-art BERTopic algorithm to identify pillar topics and trending subtopics within anesthesiology research. Temporal trends were assessed using the Mann-Kendall test. Results: The publishing journals with most abstracts in this dataset were Anesthesia & Analgesia 1133, Anesthesiology 992, and Pain 671. Eight pillar topics were identified and categorized as basic or clinical sciences based on a hierarchical clustering analysis. Amongst the pillar topics, “Cells & Proteomics” had both the highest annual and total number of abstracts. Interestingly, there was an overall upward trend for all topics spanning the years 2000–2022. However, when focusing on the period from 2015 to 2022, topics “Cells & Proteomics” and “Pulmonology” exhibit a downward trajectory. Additionally, various subtopics were identified, with notable increasing trends in “Aneurysms”, “Covid 19 Pandemic”, and “Artificial intelligence & Machine Learning”. Conclusion: Our work offers a comprehensive analysis of the anesthesiology research landscape by providing insights into pillar topics, and trending subtopics. These findings contribute to a better understanding of anesthesiology research and can guide future directions.

Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota-derived metabolite produced by the action of gut microbiota and the hepatic enzyme Flavin Mono‑oxygenase 3 (FMO3). TMAO level has a positive correlation with the risk of cardiovascular events, including stroke, and their level is influenced mainly by dietary choice and the action of liver enzyme FMO3. TMAO plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis plaque, which is one of the causative factors of the stroke event. Preclinical and clinical investigations on the TMAO and associated stroke risk, severity, and outcomes are summarised in this review. In addition, mechanisms of TMAO-driven vascular dysfunction are also discussed, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, thrombus and foam cell formation, altered cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, etc. Post-stroke inflammatory cascades involving activation of immune cells, i.e., microglia and astrocytes, result in Blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption, allowing TMAO to infiltrate the brain and further aggravate inflammation. This event occurs as a result of the activation of the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway through the release of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines that further aggravate the BBB and initiate further recruitment of immune cells in the brain. Thus, it's likely that maintaining TMAO levels and associated gut microbiota could be a promising approach for treating and improving stroke complications.

Background Exacerbations of COPD (ECOPD) have a major impact on patients and healthcare systems across the world. Precise estimates of the global burden of ECOPD on mortality and hospital readmission are needed to inform policy makers and aid preventive strategies to mitigate this burden. The aims of the present study were to explore global in-hospital mortality, post-discharge mortality and hospital readmission rates after ECOPD-related hospitalisation using an individual patient data meta-analysis (IPDMA) design. Methods A systematic review was performed identifying studies that reported in-hospital mortality, post-discharge mortality and hospital readmission rates following ECOPD-related hospitalisation. Data analyses were conducted using a one-stage random-effects meta-analysis model. This study was conducted and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-IPD statement. Results Data of 65 945 individual patients with COPD were analysed. The pooled in-hospital mortality rate was 6.2%, pooled 30-, 90- and 365-day post-discharge mortality rates were 1.8%, 5.5% and 10.9%, respectively, and pooled 30-, 90- and 365-day hospital readmission rates were 7.1%, 12.6% and 32.1%, respectively, with noticeable variability between studies and countries. Strongest predictors of mortality and hospital readmission included noninvasive mechanical ventilation and a history of two or more ECOPD-related hospitalisations

We developed an inherently interpretable multilevel Bayesian framework for representing variation in regression coefficients that mimics the piecewise linearity of ReLU-activated deep neural networks. We used the framework to formulate a survival model for using medical claims to predict hospital readmission and death that focuses on discharge placement, adjusting for confounding in estimating causal local average treatment effects. We trained the model on a 5% sample of Medicare beneficiaries from 2008 and 2011, based on their 2009-2011 inpatient episodes (approximately 1.2 million), and then tested the model on 2012 episodes (approximately 400 thousand). The model scored an out-of-sample AUROC of approximately 0.75 on predicting all-cause readmissions-defined using official Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) methodology-or death within 30-days of discharge, being competitive against XGBoost and a Bayesian deep neural network, demonstrating that one need-not sacrifice interpretability for accuracy. Crucially, as a regression model, it provides what blackboxes cannot-its exact gold-standard global interpretation, explicitly defining how the model performs its internal "reasoning" for mapping the input data features to predictions. In doing so, we identify relative risk factors and quantify the effect of discharge placement. We also show that the posthoc explainer SHAP provides explanations that are inconsistent with the ground truth model reasoning that our model readily admits.

The World Health Organization’s epidemiological data from 2016 revealed that while 57% of the global population aged 15 years or older had abstained from drinking alcohol in the previous year, more than half of the population in the Americas, Europe, and Western Pacific consumed alcohol. The spectrum of alcohol use behavior is broad: low-risk use (sensible and in moderation), at-risk use (e.g., binge drinking), harmful use (misuse) and dependence (alcoholism; addiction; alcohol use disorder). The at-risk use and misuse of alcohol is associated with the transition to dependence, as well as many damaging health outcomes and preventable causes of premature death. Recent conceptualizations of alcohol dependence posit that the subjective experience of pain may be a significant contributing factor in the transition across the spectrum of alcohol use behavior. This narrative review summarizes the effects of alcohol at all levels of the pain system. The pain system includes nociceptors as sensory indicators of potentially dangerous stimuli and tissue damage (nociception), spinal circuits mediating defensive reflexes, and most importantly, the supraspinal circuits mediating nocifensive behaviors and the perception of pain. Although the functional importance of pain is to protect from injury and further or future damage, chronic pain may emerge despite the recovery from, and absence of, biological damage (i.e., in the absence of nociception). Like other biological perceptual systems, pain is a construction contingent on sensory information and a history of individual experiences (i.e., learning and memory). Neuroadaptations and brain plasticity underlying learning and memory and other basic physiological functions can also result in pathological conditions such as chronic pain and addiction. Moreover, the negative affective/emotional aspect of pain perception provides embodied and motivational components that may play a substantial role in the transition from alcohol use to dependence.

We forecast constraints on cosmological parameters enabled by three surveys conducted with SPT-3G, the third-generation camera on the South Pole Telescope. The surveys cover separate regions of 1500, 2650, and 6000 deg ^2 to different depths, in total observing 25% of the sky. These regions will be measured to white noise levels of roughly 2.5, 9, and $12\ \mu {\rm{K}}$ -armin, respectively, in cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature units at 150 GHz by the end of 2024. The survey also includes measurements at 95 and 220 GHz, which have noise levels a factor of ∼1.2 and 3.5 times higher than 150 GHz, respectively, with each band having a polarization noise level $\sim \sqrt{2}$ times higher than the temperature noise. We use a novel approach to obtain the covariance matrices for jointly and optimally estimated gravitational lensing potential band powers and unlensed CMB temperature and polarization band powers. We demonstrate the ability to test the ΛCDM model via the consistency of cosmological parameters constrained independently from SPT-3G and Planck data, and consider the improvement in constraints on ΛCDM extension parameters from a joint analysis of SPT-3G and Planck data. The ΛCDM cosmological parameters are typically constrained with uncertainties up to ∼2 times smaller with SPT-3G data, compared to Planck, with the two data sets measuring significantly different angular scales and polarization levels, providing additional tests of the standard cosmological model.

We present a flare star catalog from 4 yr of nontargeted millimeter-wave survey data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT). The data were taken with the SPT-3G camera and cover a 1500 deg ^2 region of the sky from 20 ^h 40 ^m 0 ^s to 3 ^h 20 ^m 0 ^s in right ascension and from −42° to −70° in declination. This region was observed on a nearly daily cadence from 2019 to 2022 and chosen to avoid the plane of the galaxy. A short-duration transient search of this survey yields 111 flaring events from 66 stars, increasing the number of both flaring events and detected flare stars by an order of magnitude from the previous SPT-3G data release. We provide cross-matching to Gaia DR3, as well as matches to X-ray point sources found in the second ROSAT all-sky survey. We have detected flaring stars across the main sequence, from early-type A stars to M dwarfs, as well as a large population of evolved stars. These stars are mostly nearby, spanning 10–1000 pc in distance. Most of the flare spectral indices are constant or gently rising as a function of frequency at 95/150/220 GHz. The timescale of these events can range from minutes to hours, and the peak ν L _ν luminosities range from 10 ^27 to 10 ^31 erg s ^−1 in the SPT-3G frequency bands.

The regional boom in digital economy has provided people with remote conversations and socialization while reducing the risk of depression. This study aims to elucidate whether regional digital economy can be a savior for individual depression. The multi-source dataset collects 11,845 individuals from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2018 (CHARLS), with the combination of corresponding regional data from China City Statistical Yearbooks. A series of regressions with integrated mediation and moderation analyses are employed to bridge the link between the digital economy and depression. The results suggest that people living in areas with a higher level of digital economy are less likely to suffer from depression. The development of the digital economy helps people find solace or air grievances more easily, thereby reducing the risk of depression. Individual information and communications technology (ICT) engagement is found to mediate the relationship between the regional digital economy and individual depression. Residence type moderates the association between the three casual pairs of digital economy, ICT engagement, and depression. Improved digitization stimulates personal engagement with ICTs, which in turn expands social connections and support. Strengthened social interactions naturally keep depression away. Moreover, the urban-rural differences further confirm the underlying mechanism. Objectives: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is systemic autoinflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology. Genetic studies have been limited. Here, we conducted detailed genetic and inflammatory biomarker analysis of a large AOSD cohort to investigate the underlying pathology and identify novel targets for potential treatment., Methods: We investigated AOSD cases (n=60) for rare germline and somatic variants using whole exome sequencing with virtual gene panels. Transcriptome profiles were investigated by bulk RNA sequencing whole blood. Cytokine profiling was performed on an extended patient cohort (n=106), alongside measurements of NLRP3 inflammasome activation using a custom assay, and Type I Interferon (IFN) score using a novel method., Results: We observed higher-than-expected frequencies of rare germline variants associated with monogenic autoinflammatory disorders in AOSD cases (AOSD 38.4% vs healthy controls 20.4%), and earlier onset of putative somatic variants associated with clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential. Transcriptome profiling revealed positive correlation between Still's activity score (SAS) and gene expression associated with the innate immune system. ASC/NLRP3 specks levels and Type I IFN scores were significantly elevated in AOSD cases compared to healthy controls (p=0.0001 and 0.0015 respectively), in addition to several cytokines: IL-6 (p<0.0001), IL-10 (p<0.0075), IL-12p70 (p=0.0005), IL-18 (p<0.0001), IL-23 (p<0.0001), IFN-α2 (p=0.0009), and IFNγ (p=0.0002)., Conclusions: Our study shows considerable genetic complexity within AOSD and demonstrates the potential utility of the ASC/NLRP3 specks assay for disease stratification and targeted treatment. In this study, we developed a flexible, biocompatible, and high-output electrical performance triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) employing a silk fibroin (SF)-MXene composite film (SF-MXene-F) and a PDMS film as the friction layer. The inclusion of MXene in the SF film increased its surface charge density, presenting a practical approach to designing high-performance SF composite film-based TENGs. At a MXene content of 40%, our SF-MXene composite film-based TENG (SF-MXene-FTENG) achieved optimal output electrical performance, featuring a maximum open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 418 V, a maximum short-circuit current (Isc) of 11.6 μA, and a maximum output power density of 9.92 W/m 2 . The Voc and power densities of the SF-MXene-FTENG surpassed previously reported optimal values for SF-based TENGs by 1.6 and 3.8 times, respectively. Furthermore, leveraging the exceptional biocompatibility and light shading performance of TENGs, we designed a wearable smart TENG eye mask capable of diagnosing insomnia symptoms and monitoring sleep quality in real time. The SF-MXene-FTENG holds promising application potential as a wearable electronic device for diagnosing sleep-related diseases.

The implication of 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) activity in depression is a topic of debate, and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. Here, we elucidate how hippocampal excitation-inhibition (E/I) balance underlies the regulatory effects of 5-HT2CR in depression. Molecular biological analyses showed that chronic mild stress (CMS) reduced the expression of 5-HT2CR in hippocampus. We revealed that inhibition of 5-HT2CR induced depressive-like behaviours, reduced GABA release and shifted the E/I balance towards excitation in CA3 pyramidal neurons using behavioural analyses, microdialysis coupled with mass spectrometry and electrophysiological recordings. Moreover, 5-HT2CR modulated the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-carboxy-terminal PDZ ligand of nNOS (CAPON) interaction by influencing intracellular Ca2+ release, as determined by fibre photometry and coimmunoprecipitation. Notably, disruption of nNOS-CAPON with the specific small molecule compound ZLc-002 or AAV-CMV-CAPON-125C-GFP abolished 5-HT2CR inhibition-induced depressive-like behaviours, as well as the impairment in soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) complex assembly-mediated GABA vesicle release and consequent E/I imbalance. Importantly, optogenetic inhibition of CA3 GABAergic neurons prevented the effects of AAV-CMV-CAPON-125C-GFP on depressive behaviours in the presence of a 5-HT2CR antagonist. Conclusively, our findings disclose the regulatory role of 5-HT2CR in depressive-like behaviours and highlight hippocampal nNOS-CAPON coupling-triggered E/I imbalance as a pivotal cellular event underpinning the behavioural consequences of 5-HT2CR inhibition., (© The Author(s) 2024. As a highly contagious acute respiratory disease, influenza A virus (A/WSN/1933) poses a huge threat to human health and public health. influenza A virus proliferation relies on glucose metabolism in host cells, yet the effects of influenza A virus on glucose metabolism and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we created models of WSN virus-infected mice and A549 cells, along with analyzing metabolomics and transcriptomics data, to investigate how WSN virus infection affects host cell glucose metabolism and specific mechanisms. Analysis of metabolites and gene expression showed that WSN virus infection triggers glycolysis in A549 cells, with notable upregulation of hexokinase 2 (HK2), lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), and elevated lactate levels. Additionally, it leads to mitochondrial impairment and heightened reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Elevated levels of glucose may enhance the replication of WSN virus, whereas inhibitors of glycolysis can reduce it. Enhancement of HIF-1α activation facilitated replication of WSN virus through stimulation of lactate synthesis, with the primary influence of glycolysis on WSN virus replication being mediated by ROS/HIF-1α signaling. Mice given HIF-1α inhibitor PTX-478 or glycolysis inhibitor 2-Deoxyglucose (2-DG) exhibited reduced lactate levels and decreased WSN virus replication, along with mitigated weight loss and lung damage. Objective: To investigate the relationship between sleep duration and myopia among primary school students in minority regions of Southwest China., Methods: The school-based, cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2020 to January 2021. All participants underwent a comprehensive ocular examination and completed a questionnaire on demographic characteristics, ophthalmological history and major environmental factors for myopia. Spherical equivalent (SE) and ocular biometric parameters were measured after cycloplegia, with myopia being defined as SE ≤-0.5 D (Diopter). Multivariate regression models were used to examine the association of sleep duration with myopia, SE and axial length (AL)., Results: A total of 857 students from grades 2 to 4 were included in the analysis, of which 63.6% were myopic and 62.0% belonged to ethnic minorities. Boys had a slightly higher prevalence of myopia compared with girls (66.7% vs 60.6%, p=0.06). Myopic students had longer AL, deeper anterior chamber depth and thinner central corneal thickness compared with non-myopic students (all p<0.05). There was no significant association between sleep duration and myopia in both boys and girls (p=0.319 and 0.186, respectively). Moreover, girls with a sleep duration of 8-9 hour/day had higher SE and shorter AL compared with those with less than 8 hour/day of sleep (β=0.41 and -0.32, respectively, all p<0.05)., Conclusion: This cross-sectional study did not find a significant association between sleep duration and myopia. However, it suggests that 8-9 hours of sleep per day may have a protective effect on SE progression and AL elongation in girls. Aim: Most patients with ectopic pregnancies experience a high level of psychological distress for various reasons. The psychological state and needs of patients with recurrent ectopic pregnancies need to be seriously addressed. However, psychological distress in patients with recurrent ectopic pregnancy has not been widely studied. The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand the prevalence and factors influencing psychological distress in patients with recurrent ectopic pregnancies., Design: A cross-sectional study., Methods: This study follows the STROBE guidelines. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) was utilised to assess the level of psychological stress in patients. The Kruskal-Wallis test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the factors influencing psychological stress in patients with different conditions., Results: A total of 134 patients with recurrent ectopic pregnancies completed the survey, and most patients experienced moderate-to-severe psychological distress. The psychological distress experienced by patients with recurrent ectopic pregnancies is complex and dynamic, influenced by various factors. Among them, the main factors affecting the psychological distress of patients were age, education level, number of children, number of abortions, medical insurance and economic pressure (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: This study suggests that the psychological distress experienced by patients with recurrent ectopic pregnancies is universal and cannot be ignored. Ribosomal proteins (RPs) are essential components of ribosomes, playing a role not only in ribosome biosynthesis, but also in various extra-ribosomal functions, some of which are implicated in the development of different types of tumors. As universally acknowledged, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been garnering global attention due to its complex pathogenesis and challenging treatments. In this review, we analyze the biological characteristics of RPs and emphasize their essential roles in HCC. In addition to regulating related signaling pathways such as the p53 pathway, RPs also act in proliferation and metastasis by influencing cell cycle, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in HCC. Background: The increasing incidence of endometrial cancer (EC) has highlighted the need for improved early detection methods. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel DNA methylation classifier, EMPap, for EC detection using cervical scrapings., Methods: EMPap incorporated the methylation status of BHLHE22 and CDO1, along with age and body mass index (BMI), into a logistic regression model to calculate the endometrial cancer methylation (EM) score for identifying EC in cervical scrapings. We enrolled 1297 patients with highly suspected EC, including 196 confirmed EC cases, and assessed the EMPap performance in detecting EC., Results: EMPap demonstrated robust diagnostic accuracy, with an area under the curve of 0.93, sensitivity of 90.3%, and specificity of 89.3%. It effectively detected EC across various disease stages, grades, and histological subtypes, and consistently performed well across patient demographics and symptoms. EMPap correctly identified 87.5% of the type II ECs and 53.8% of premalignant lesions. Notably, compared with transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) in patients with postmenopausal bleeding, EMPap exhibited superior sensitivity (100% vs. 82.0%) and specificity (85.2% vs. 38.5%). In asymptomatic postmenopausal women, EMPap maintained high sensitivity (89.5%) and negative predictive value (NPV) (98.3%)., Conclusions: This study demonstrated the potential of EMPap as an effective tool for EC detection. Despite the limited sample size, EMPap showed promise for identifying type II EC and detecting over 50% of premalignant lesions. Background: The global impact of COVID-19 has prompted profound shifts in public health policies. The epidemiology of respiratory infectious disease may change in the post-covid era. This study investigates the repercussions of these policies on respiratory infectious diseases, specifically the resurgence of severe influenza and enterovirus infections in the post-COVID-19 era., Methods: Examining the period from January 2020 to December 2023, our nationwide study analyzes data from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Our World in Data. Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a heterogeneous histiocytosis characterized by proliferation of Langerhans cells. While less common, manifestations of digestive tract involvement in LCH remain largely unrevealed. We conducted a retrospective analysis of demographics, clinical, endoscopic, genetic and follow-up data from 13 adult patients with pathologically confirmed gastrointestinal involvement of LCH (LCH-GI), in a single-center cohort of 465 patients. Digestive tract involvement was observed in 2.80% of LCH patients. At LCH-GI diagnosis, 7 patients (53.8%) had unifocal lesions, and 6 patients (46.2%) had multisystem disease. 6 patients (46.2%) experienced no gastrointestinal symptoms at LCH-GI onset, while others were symptomatic. Stomach was most commonly affected (61.5%), followed by esophagus (23.1%), colon (7.7%) and anus (7.7%). Endoscopic findings varied among 12 patients, including submucosal bulge (8 patients, 66.7%) and non-bulging lesions (4 patients, 33.3%) such as erosions, coarse granular mucosa, and regional abnormal coloration. Among 8 patients with genetic analysis, BRAF V600E mutation was detected in 5 patients (62.5%). The estimated 1-year overall survival rate was 91.7%. Progression-free survival of patients with submucosal bulges under endoscopy was significantly better than those with non-bulging lesions. This study presents 13 cases of LCH with digestive tract involvement. We emphasize the importance of endoscopy and biopsy for pathological examination of lesions such as submucosal bulges and erosions under endoscopy to assist in early detection of LCH. Comprehensive systemic assessment and regular endoscopic monitoring are essential in patient management. Treatment should be individualized with dynamic adjustments during follow-up., (© 2024. Background: Magnetic capsule gastroscopy (MCG) is a non-invasive diagnostic method for the digestive tract. However, its efficiency in visualizing the gastric cardia is often compromised due to the capsule's rapid passage. This study introduces a novel sugar-glued tether-assisted technique inspired by a traditional Chinese snack-making process to enhance cardia visualization and patient comfort during MCG., Methods: This pilot, open-label, single-center, randomized controlled, non-inferiority study was conducted at Binzhou Medical University Hospital. Seventy-eight patients were enrolled and divided into three groups: conventional MCG, suction cup tether-assisted MCG, and sugar-glued tether-assisted MCG. The primary outcomes included safety, comfort level, and gastric cardia visualization quality. Secondary outcomes assessed technique-associated performance and clinical factors., Results: The sugar-glued tether-assisted MCG demonstrated comparable cardia visualization quality to the suction cup method, with significantly better results than conventional MCG. Comfort levels were significantly higher in the sugar-glued group compared to the suction cup group. The number of swallow attempts was significantly lower in the sugar-glued group, with no adverse events reported. Secondary outcomes showed no significant differences in MCG assembly time and ingestion-to-detachment period between the suction cup and sugar-glued groups., Conclusion: The sugar-glued tether-assisted MCG is a feasible and safe modification that enhances gastric cardia visualization while improving patient comfort. N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) play a crucial role in mediating Amyloid-β (Aβ) synaptotoxicity. Our previous studies have demonstrated an opposite (neuroprotection and neurotoxicity) effect of activating astrocytic and neuronal NMDARs with higher dose (10 μM) of NMDA, an agonist of NMDARs. By contrast, activating neuronal or astrocyitc NMDARs with lower dose (1 μM) of NMDA both exerts neuroprotective effect in Aβ-induced neurotoxicity. However, the underlying mechanism of activating astrocytic NMDARs with lower dose of NMDA to protect against Aβ neurotoxicity remains unclear. Based on our previous related work, in this study, using a co-cultured cell model of primary hippocampal neurons and astrocytes, we further investigated the possible factors involved in 1 μM of NMDA activating astrocytic NMDARs to oppose Aβ-induced synaptotoxicity. Our results showed that activation of astrocytic NMDARs by 1 μM NMDA rescued Aβ-induced reduction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and inhibited Aβ-induced increase of GFAP, complement 3 (C3) and activation of NF-κB. Furthermore, blockade of astrocytic GluN2A with TCN201 abrogated the ability of 1 μM NMDA to counteract the effects of Aβ decreasing BDNF, and increasing GFAP, C3 and activation of NF-κB. These findings suggest that activation of astrocytic NMDARs protect against Aβ-induced synaptotoxicity probably through elevating BDNF and suppressing GFAP and C3. High levels of extracellular adenosine in tumor microenvironment (TME) has extensive immunosuppressive effect. CD73 catalyzes the conversion of AMP into adenosine and regulates its production. Inhibiting CD73 can reduce the level of adenosine and reverse adenosine-mediated immune suppression. Therefore, CD73 has emerged as a valuable target for cancer immunotherapy. Here, a new series of malonic acid non-nucleoside derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated as CD73 inhibitors. Among them, compounds 18 and 19 exhibited significant inhibition activities against hCD73 with IC 50 values of 0.28 μM and 0.10 μM, respectively, suggesting the feasibility of replacing the benzotriazole moiety in the lead compound. Objective: The primary objective was to evaluate if the percentage of patients with missing or inaccurate code status documentation at a Trauma Level 1 hospital could be reduced through daily updates. The secondary objective was to examine if patient preferences for DNR changed during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: This retrospective study, spanning March 2019 to December 2022, compared the code status in ICU and ED patients drawn from two data sets. The first was based on historical electronic medical records (EHR), and the second involved daily updates of code status following patient admission., Results: Implementing daily updates upon admission was more effective in ICUs than in the ED in reducing missing code status documentation. Around 20% of patients without a specific code status chose DNR under the new system. During COVID-19, a decrease in ICU patients choosing DNR and an increase in full code (FC) choices were observed., Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of regular updates and discussions regarding code status to enhance patient care and resource allocation in ICU and ED settings. Conductive hydrogels, characterized by their unique features of flexibility, biocompatibility, electrical conductivity, and responsiveness to environmental stimuli, have emerged as promising materials for sensitive strain sensors. In this study, a facile strategy to prepare highly conductive hydrogels is reported. Through rational structural and synthetic design, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are incorporated into poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) (PNAGA) hydrogels, achieving high electrical conductivity (up to 0.88 S m -1 ), significantly enhanced mechanical properties, and elevated deformative sensitivity. Furthermore, surface modification with polyhexafluoropropylene oxide (PHFPO) has substantially improved the water retention capacity and dressing comfort of this hydrogel material. Based on the above merits, these hydrogels are employed to fabricate highly sensitive wearable strain sensors which can detect and interpret subtle hand and finger movements and enable precise control of machine interfaces. The AgNWs/PNAGA based strain sensors can effectively sense finger motion, enabling the control of robotic fingers to replicate the human hand's gestures. In addition, the high deformative sensitivity and elevated water retention performance of the hydrogels makes them suitable for flow sensing. Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the association of four surrogate indexes of IR with NASH in patients with obesity., Methods: A total of 270 patients who underwent bariatric surgery, were included in this cross-sectional study. NASH was diagnosed based on liver biopsies. Binary logistics regression analyses were performed to assess the associations of four surrogate indexes of IR (HOMA-IR, Matsuda index, TyG, and TG/HDL-C) with NASH in patients with obesity. The restricted cubic spline was used to assess the dose-response associations of surrogate indexes of IR with NASH after adjusting for confounding factors., Results: NASH was diagnosed in 136 patients, with a prevalence of 50.37%. Compared with tertile 1, the fully adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of NASH for tertile 3 were 2.711(1.113-6.608) and 0.297 (0.152-0.579) for TyG and Matsuda index. Consistently, per SD increment of TyG were still significantly associated with 64% increased risks of NASH, and per SD increment of Matsuda index were still significantly associated with 38% decreased risks of NASH. In contrast, no significant associations were found between HOMA-IR and TG/HDL-C and the risk of NASH in patients with obesity (all P > 0.05). After adjusting covariates in restricted cubic splines, the risk of NASH decreased with the increment of Matsuda Index levels (P-nonlinear = 0.442, P-overall = 0.007) and with the decrement of TyG levels (P-nonlinear = 0.004, P-overall = 0.001)., Conclusions: In patients with obesity, TyG and Matsuda index were independently related to the risk of NASH after adjustment for traditional risk factors. In addition, compared with HOMA-IR and TG/HDL-C, the Matsuda index and TyG may be more suitable for NASH prediction in patients with obesity., (© 2024.
