2. Nonlinear fitting of undersampled discrete datasets in astronomy

Abstract

Data analysis and interpretation often relies on an approximation of an empirical dataset by some analytic functions or models. Actual implementations usually rely on a non-linear multi-dimensional optimization algorithm, typically Levenberg--Marquardt (LM) or other flavors of Newtonian gradient methods. A vast majority of datasets in optical and infrared astronomy are represented by values on a discrete grid because the actual signal is sampled by regularly shaped pixels in the light detectors. Here we come to the main problem of nearly all widely used implementations of nonlinear optimization methods: the function that is being fitted is evaluated at central pixel positions rather than integrated over the pixel areas. Therefore, the best-fitting set of parameters returned by the minimization routine might not be the best representation of the observed dataset, especially if a dataset is undersampled. For example, a central pixel of a 1D Gaussian with a dispersion of 1 pix (2.36 pix FWHM; so not too strongly undersampled) will be about 4.2% lower than its central evaluated value if integrated. To handle this effect properly, one needs to perform numerical or analytic integration of a model within the pixel boundaries. Abstract

Ranking and recommendation systems are the foundation for numerous online experiences, ranging from search results to personalized content delivery. These systems have evolved into complex, multilayered architectures that leverage vast datasets and often incorporate thousands of predictive models. The maintenance and enhancement of these models is a labor intensive process that requires extensive feature engineering. This approach not only exacerbates technical debt but also hampers innovation in extending these systems to emerging problem domains. In this report, we present our research to address these challenges by utilizing a large foundation model with a textual interface for ranking and recommendation tasks. We illustrate several key advantages of our approach: (1) a single model can manage multiple predictive tasks involved in ranking and recommendation, (2) decoder models with textual interface due to their comprehension of reasoning capabilities, can generalize to new recommendation surfaces and out-of-domain problems, and (3) by employing natural language interfaces for task definitions and verbalizing member behaviors and their social connections, we eliminate the need for feature engineering and the maintenance of complex directed acyclic graphs of model dependencies. We introduce our research pre-production model, 360Brew V1.0, a 150B parameter, decoder-only model that has been trained and fine-tuned on LinkedIn's data and tasks. This model is capable of solving over 30 predictive tasks across various segments of the LinkedIn platform, achieving performance levels comparable to or exceeding those of current production systems based on offline metrics, without task-specific fine-tuning. Notably, each of these tasks is conventionally addressed by dedicated models that have been developed and maintained over multiple years by teams of a similar or larger size than our own.

Abstract

Class-incremental learning in the context of limited personal labeled samples (few-shot) is critical for numerous real-world applications, such as smart home devices. A key challenge in these scenarios is balancing the trade-off between adapting to new, personalized classes and maintaining the performance of the model on the original, base classes. Fine-tuning the model on novel classes often leads to the phenomenon of catastrophic forgetting, where the accuracy of base classes declines unpredictably and significantly. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective mechanism to address this challenge by controlling the trade-off between novel and base class accuracy. We specifically target the ultra-low-shot scenario, where only a single example is available per novel class. Our approach introduces a Novel Class Detection (NCD) rule, which adjusts the degree of forgetting a priori while simultaneously enhancing performance on novel classes. We demonstrate the versatility of our solution by applying it to state-of-the-art Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FSCIL) methods, showing consistent improvements across different settings. To better quantify the trade-off between novel and base class performance, we introduce new metrics: NCR@2FOR and NCR@5FOR. Abstract

Density functional theory (DFT) is probably the most promising approach for quantum chemistry calculations considering its good balance between calculations precision and speed. In recent years, several neural network-based functionals have been developed for exchange-correlation energy approximation in DFT, DM21 developed by Google Deepmind being the most notable between them. This study focuses on evaluating the efficiency of DM21 functional in predicting molecular geometries, with a focus on the influence of oscillatory behavior in neural network exchange-correlation functionals. We implemented geometry optimization in PySCF for the DM21 functional in geometry optimization problem, compared its performance with traditional functionals, and tested it on various benchmarks. Our findings reveal both the potential and the current challenges of using neural network functionals for geometry optimization in DFT. We propose a solution extending the practical applicability of such functionals and allowing to model new substances with their help.

Abstract

The 2017 observing campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) delivered the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images at the observing frequency of 230 GHz, leading to a number of unique studies on black holes and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In total, eighteen sources were observed: the main science targets, Sgr A* and M87 along with various calibrators. We investigated the morphology of the sixteen AGN in the EHT 2017 data set, focusing on the properties of the VLBI cores: size, flux density, and brightness temperature. We studied their dependence on the observing frequency in order to compare it with the Blandford-K\"onigl (BK) jet model. We modeled the source structure of seven AGN in the EHT 2017 data set using linearly polarized circular Gaussian components and collected results for the other nine AGN from dedicated EHT publications, complemented by lower frequency data in the 2-86 GHz range. Then, we studied the dependences of the VLBI core flux density, size, and brightness temperature on the frequency measured in the AGN host frame. We compared the observations with the BK jet model and estimated the magnetic field strength dependence on the distance from the central black hole. Our results indicate a deviation from the standard BK model, particularly in the decrease of the brightness temperature with the observing frequency. Either bulk acceleration of the jet material, energy transfer from the magnetic field to the particles, or both are required to explain the observations.

Abstract

We present the discovery of PSR J1947-1120, a new huntsman millisecond pulsar with a red giant companion star in a 10.3 d orbit. This pulsar was found via optical, X-ray, and radio follow-up of the previously unassociated gamma-ray source 4FGL J1947.6-1121. PSR J1947-1120 is the second confirmed pulsar in the huntsman class and establishes this as a bona fide subclass of millisecond pulsar. We use MESA models to show that huntsman pulsars can be naturally explained as neutron star binaries whose secondaries are currently in the "red bump" region of the red giant branch, temporarily underfilling their Roche lobes and hence halting mass transfer. Huntsman pulsars offer a new view of the formation of typical millisecond pulsars, allowing novel constraints on the efficiency of mass transfer and recycling at an intermediate stage in the process., Comment: ApJ in press

8. Revisiting the Classics: On the Statistics of Dust Formation in Novae

Abstract

While nova eruptions produce some of the most common and dramatic dust formation episodes among astrophysical transients, the demographics of dust-forming novae remain poorly understood. Here, we present a statistical study of dust formation in 40 novae with high-quality optical/IR light curves, quantitatively distinguishing dust-forming from non-dust-forming novae while exploring the properties of the dust events. We find that 50-70% of novae produce dust, significantly higher than previous estimates. Dust-forming novae can be separated from those that do not show dust formation by using the largest redward ($V-K$) colour change from peak visible brightness; ($V-J$) or ($V-H$) offer useful but less sensitive constraints. This makes optical+IR photometry a powerful tool to quantify dust formation in novae. We find that novae detected in GeV $\gamma$-rays by \emph{Fermi}-LAT appear to form dust more often than novae not detected by \emph{Fermi}, implying a possible connection between $\gamma$-ray producing shocks and dust production. We also find that novae that evolve very quickly ($t_2 < 10$ days) are much less likely to form dust, in agreement with previous findings. We confirm a correlation between $t_2$ and the time of the onset of dust formation (which occurs $\sim$1 week--3 months after maximum light), but conclude that it is primarily an observational artifact driven by dust formation determining when a nova drops 2 mag below peak. 9. High-Throughput Studies of Novel Magnetic Materials in Borides

Abstract

Borides are a versatile material family with various properties for valuable applications. Conventional magnetism, such as ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism in borides, have been extensively studied. However, research on unconventional magnetism in borides where quantum effects are dominant is scarce. Here, we implement a high-throughput workflow combining first-principles calculations, materials prediction, and magnetic properties calculations to discover novel magnetism and magnetic materials in borides. Successfully applying the workflow, we report three families of novel magnetic borides, including two families of borides exhibiting quantum magnetism. One is a family of dimerized quantum magnets among YCrB$_4$-type borides, which provides a rare platform for studying the spin-gap quantum critical point. The other is a family of altermagnets among FeMo$_2$B$_2$-type borides, extending the magnetic orderings exhibited by borides beyond conventional ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. We also predict a family of magnetic laminate transition metal borides, known as the MAB phases, in the AlFe$_2$B$_2$-type family, which provide pure-phase or alloying candidates for studying magnetocaloric materials and the associated magnetic transitions. The workflow is expected to be used in further studies of novel magnetism and magnetic materials.

10. Fast M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gates in trapped-ion quantum processors with compensated carrier transition

Abstract

Carrier transition is one of the major factors hindering the high-speed implementation of M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gates in trapped-ion quantum processors. We present an approach to design laser pulse shapes for M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gate in ion chains which accounts for the effect of carrier transition on qubit-phonon dynamics. We show that the fast-oscillating carrier term effectively modifies the spin-dependent forces acting on ions, and this can be compensated by a simple nonlinear transformation of a laser pulse. Using numerical simulations for short ion chains and perturbation theory for longer chains, we demonstrate that our approach allows to reach the infidelity below $10^{-4}$ while keeping the gate duration below 100 $\mu$s.

Positive VRT (VRT+) is an indication for calcium channel blockers therapy. Long-term vasoresponders demonstrate sustained low-risk status and the highest survival among all PH subtypes. THE STUDY AIMED: To characterize VRT performance in IPAH patients and differences in presentation between patients with positive, negative VRT, and patients with not done VRT due to physicians' decision. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-six adult IPAH patients (44.2 ± 15.3 years, 34 males) comprised into prospective single-center study between 2008 and 2023 years. Inhaled iloprost was used for VRT. Positive VRT was defined with established Sitbon criteria. Standard baseline pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) evaluation including cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) was performed. Risk status was evaluated using ESC/ERS (European Society of Cardiology/European Respiratory Society) risk scale 2015. Survival was assessed with the Kaplan-Mayer method. RESULTS: Eighty-five (51.2%) patients underwent VRT. VRT not done (ND VRT) due to the physicians' decision in 26.7% patients, due to the technical inability in 15.4% and IV FC (WHO) in 16.2% patients. Positive VRT registered in 26 (15.6%) patients. Patients with negative VRT demonstrated worse hemodynamics and exercise tolerance, higher N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level, and right heart dilatation compared with VRT+. Patients with ND VRT due to the physicians decision were often older than 60 years, had higher body mass index, symptoms of right heart failure, hemoptysis, arrhythmias, high NT-proBNP, and hemodynamic criteria of high risk in comparison with patients with done VRT. Some CPET parameters were similar between VRT + group and patients ND VRT group. Loss of vasoreactivity and PAH worsening were detected in 50% of VRT + patients in a 1.76 year of follow-up. Patients with vasoreactivity loss exhibited the criteria of intermediate risk at a baseline. Five-year survival was 97% in VRT + group in comparison with 61% in VRT - and 53% in ND VRT group. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians' decision was the most common reason for not doing VRT in IPAH patients. Intermediate high-risk criteria presence at a baseline were associated with not done VRT due to physicians decision, negative VRT, and the vasoreactivity loss during the follow-up. CPET should be used more widely to detect the early signs of PAH progression in low risk or VRT + patients. Abstract

The possibility of using axial spin centers with S = 3 / 2 in silicon carbide for all-optical measurement of the projection B z of the external magnetic field onto the c -axis of the SiC crystal, as well as the polar and azimuthal angles of the magnetic field relative to the direction of the c -axis, at room and significantly higher temperatures is shown. Spin centers in SiC, where optically induced spin alignment occurs, have a unique system of spin levels in a magnetic field, caused by the interaction of the fine structure and hyperfine interaction with the 29 Si nuclei. There is a wide range of level anticrossings (LACs) resulting in an extremely strong change in the photoluminescence intensity at LAC. The dependence of the LAC spectrum on the orientation of the external magnetic field is also observed. The proposed magnetometer is based on the compensation of the external magnetic field at the position of the optical excitation spot of the confocal microscope. The sensitivity to a constant magnetic field for the z-component of the magnetic field (B z) is better than 0.1 μ T / Hz in the confocal volume at room temperature. The sensitivity of polar and azimuthal angle determination depends on the sensitivity of the perpendicular component of the magnetic field, which is better than ∼ 0.01 mT / Hz in the range from − 0.4 to 0.4 mT.
