Alkali-free aluminoborosilicate glasses without (GDMC-Si) and with La2O3 addition (GDMC-La) were fabricated with an aim to develop low dielectric glass fibers for use in printed circuit boards (PCBs) as a reinforcing material in high-speed 5G/6G telecommunications application. This study presents the structural, thermo-physical, and dielectric properties of the glasses. The decrease in glass transition temperature (Tg) and the increase in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) were found by the addition of SiO2 and La2O3 in the present glass system, which are due to the depolymerization of the glass networks confirmed by the FTIR analysis. The dielectric constants (Dk) and the dissipation factors (Df) of the glasses were investigated at a high frequency of 10 GHz. The Dk values of the GDMC-Si and GDMC-La glass systems reached a minimum of 4.50 and 4.75, while their Df values reached a minimum of 2.86 × 10−3 and 3.01 × 10−3, respectively. Notably, the Dk and Df values of the present glasses were lower than the commercial E-glass (Dk: 6.9, Df: 7.0 × 10−3 at 10 GHz) and L-glass (Dk: 4.8, Df: 3.0 × 10−3 at 10 GHz). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of blue light and its brightness on long-term memory. Blue light was tested under four distinct illuminance conditions ranging from 400 to 1000 lux, and the results were compared with those of red light as a comparison group. A total of 25 individuals, including 16 men and 9 women with a mean age of 22.04 ± 1.74 years, participated in these tests based on a within-subject research design. Initially, each participant was exposed to individual light conditions for 30 min in the morning. Subsequently, they were asked to complete learning memory tasks, which involved memorizing specific words composed of randomly chosen English consonants. Exactly 20 min after these memory tasks, their long-term memory retention was measured through recall. It was found that blue light was superior to red light in terms of long-term memory enhancement; the difference was statistically significant, with a confidence level of 95%. Moreover, brighter light environments were found to affect long-term memory performance more significantly compared to darker light environments. That said, there was no significant difference in interaction effects between light color and brightness. These findings confirm the results of previous studies highlighting the effectiveness of blue light in enhancing memory retention while also demonstrating that the degree of enhancement may vary depending on light brightness. The African swine fever virus (ASFV) causes severe disease in wild and domestic pigs, with high mortality rates, extensive spread, and significant economic losses globally. Despite ongoing efforts, an effective vaccine remains elusive. Therefore, effective diagnostic methods are needed to rapidly detect and prevent the further spread of ASF. This study assessed nine commercial kits based on real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approved in the Republic of Korea using the synthesized ASFV plasmid, 20 food waste samples, and artificially spiked samples (ASSs). The kits were evaluated for their diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, cost per reaction, and reaction running time. In addition, the results were compared with those of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) standard methods. Three commercial kits (VDx® ASFV qPCR Kit, Palm PCR™ ASFV Fast PCR Kit, and PowerChek™ ASFV Real-time PCR Detection Kit Ver.1.0) demonstrated the highest sensitivity (100 ag/μL), cost-effectiveness (less than KRW 10,000), and shortest running time (less than 70 min). These kits are suitable for the monitoring, early diagnosis, and prevention of the spread of ASF. This is the first report on the performance comparison of ASFV diagnostic kits approved in the Republic of Korea, providing valuable information for selecting kits for testing with food waste samples. Simple Summary: Spinal metastases can cause instability, making it difficult for clinicians to decide on the best treatment. While guidelines exist for stable and unstable spinal metastases, those with intermediate instability (a SINS of 7–12) pose a clinical challenge. This study examines risk factors that might require surgical intervention following initial radiotherapy in these patients. We analyzed data from 469 patients with spinal metastases treated between 2019 and 2021. Our findings show that patients with primary tumors in the lung, liver, or kidney, higher Bilsky grades of spinal cord compression, lytic bone lesions, and higher radiation doses are more likely to need surgery. These results suggest that the careful evaluation of these factors can help us to develop better treatment strategies for patients with intermediate spinal instability. Background: One important determinant in choosing a treatment modality is spinal instability. Clear management guidelines are suggested for stable and unstable spinal metastatic lesions, but lesions in the intermediate instability category (SINS [spinal instability neoplastic score] score of 7–12) remain a clinical dilemma. This study aims to analyze the risk factors necessitating surgical intervention after radiotherapy (RT) in patients with those lesions. Methods: A multicenter cohort of 469 patients with spinal metastases of intermediate instability who received radiotherapy (RT) as the initial treatment between 2019 and 2021 were retrospectively enrolled. All patients were neurologically intact at the time of RT. According to the performance of surgical intervention after RT, various clinical and radiographic risk factors for surgical intervention were compared between surgery and non-surgery groups using uni- and multivariate analyses. A recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) was performed using significant determinants identified in multivariate analysis. Results: The mean age at the time of RT was 59.9 years and there were 198 females. The lung was the most common primary site. During the mean follow-up duration of 18.2 months, surgical treatment was required in 79 (17.9%) of patients. The most common surgical method was decompressive laminectomy with stabilization (62.0%), followed by vertebrectomy with stabilization (22.8%) and stabilization only (15.2%). The mean SINS for the total cohort was 9.0. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that the primary tumor site of the lung, liver, and kidney, higher Bilsky grades of ESCC, lytic bone lesions, and higher EQD210 were significant risk factors for surgical intervention after RT. Among them, Bilsky grade, primary tumor type of the lung, liver, and kidney, and EQD210 were the most important determinants for expecting the probability of surgical intervention on RPA. Conclusions: Surgical intervention was performed in 17.9% of patients with intermediate instability after RT as the initial treatment. The primary tumor site of the lung, liver, and kidney, higher Bilsky grade of ESCC, and EQD210 were the most important determinants for expecting the probability of surgical intervention. Recently, functional or preservative surgery has been preferred for nail unit melanoma; however, complete resection of the nail unit, particularly the matrix, is challenging because of its complex structure. This study aims to measure the distance of important nail structures through ultrasonography. Herein, 14 patients without nail deformity were included. The length from the nail cuticle to the distal interphalangeal joint (distance X), to the attachment part of the extensor muscle (distance A), to the median proximal end of the nail matrix (distance B), and to the lateral proximal end of the nail matrix (distance C) were measured. In the axial plane, the length from the highest point of the nail plate to the bottom of the distal phalanx (distance Y) and to the lateral tip of the nail plate (distance D) were measured. On the first fingernail, third fingernail, first toenail, and third toenail, the mean ratio A:X, ratio B:X, ratio C:X, and ratio D:Y were 78.6%, 44.3%, 57.2%, 40.1%, and 84.6%; 55.9%, 64.9%, 40.2%, and 66.4%; 35.6%, 50.8%, 34.3%, and 81.9%; and 57.2%, 59.6%, and 31.7%, respectively. Recently, alopecia areata (AA) treatment via the Janus kinase (JAK)‐signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway has been reported. However, as baricitinib, a JAK1/2 inhibitor is only approved for adult patients, children, and adolescent patients still lack treatment options. We present a case that showed improvement of severe AA in an adolescent patient on upadacitinib, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in patients with rheumatoid disease or atopic dermatitis (AD) in children aged 12 years or older and weighing 40 kg or more. During a radiotherapy (RT) course, geometrical variations of target volumes, organs at risk, weight changes (loss/gain), tumor regression and/or progression can significantly affect the treatment outcome. Adaptive RT has become the effective methods along with technical advancements in imaging modalities including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Planning CT (pCT) can be modified via deformable image registration (DIR), which is applied to the pair of pCT and CBCT. However, the artifact existed in both pCT and CBCT is a vulnerable factor in DIR. The dose calculation on CBCT is also suggested. Missing information due to the artifacts hinders the accurate dose calculation on CBCT. In this study, we aim to develop a deep learning-based metal artifact reduction (MAR) model to reduce the metal artifacts in CBCT for head and neck cancer RT. To train the proposed MAR model, we synthesized the kV-CBCT images including metallic implants, with and without metal artifacts (simulated image data pairs) through sinogram image handling process. We propose the deep learning architecture which focuses on both artifact removal and reconstruction of anatomic structure using a dual-encoder architecture. We designed four single-encoder models and three dual-encoder models based on UNet (for an artifact removal) and FusionNet (for a tissue restoration). Each single-encoder model contains either UNet or FusionNet, while the dual-encoder models have both UNet and FusionNet architectures. In the dual-encoder models, we implemented different feature fusion methods, including simple addition, spatial attention, and spatial/channel wise attention. Among the models, a dual-encoder model with spatial/channel wise attention showed the highest scores in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio, mean squared error, structural similarity index, and Pearson correlation coefficient. CBCT images from 34 head and neck cancer patients were used to test the developed models. The dual-encoder model with spatial/channel wise attention showed the best results in terms of artifact index. Background: This study evaluates functional larynx preservation in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) and laryngeal cancer (LC) who achieved complete remission following radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT)., Methods: HPC and LC patients treated with RT/CCRT from 1999 to 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Severe late dysphagia and tracheostomy cases were assessed to determine laryngeal function. Long-term preservation rate of functional larynx and associated factors were evaluated., Results: Of 152 patients (55 HPC, 97 LC), nine developed severe dysphagia, occurring on average 58.2 months post-treatment. HPC and cervical node metastasis significantly increased the risk of laryngeal function impairment (p < 0.001 and p = 0.014, respectively), presenting a continued decline in functional larynx preservation rate beyond 10 years., Conclusions: Patients with HPC and cervical node metastasis demonstrate an increased risk for long-term laryngeal function impairment despite successful oncologic outcomes. Background: Liver transplantation (LT) increases the heart and vessel workload in patients with cirrhotic cardiomyopathy. While the interaction of the left ventricle (LV) with the arterial system (ventriculoarterial coupling, VAC) is a key determinant of cardiovascular performance, little is known about changes in VAC after LT. Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between VAC after LT and cardiovascular outcomes., Methods: 344 consecutive patients underwent echocardiographic assessments before and within 30 days after LT. Non-invasive arterial elastance (Ea), LV end-systolic elastance (Ees), and LV end-diastolic elastance (Eed) were calculated. The postoperative outcomes included the development of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and the length of stay in the intensive care unit and hospital., Results: A total of 240 patients were included in the analyses. After LT, Ea increased by 16% (P < 0.001), and Ees and contractility index of systolic velocity (S') increased by 18% (P < 0.001) and 7% (P < 0.001), respectively. The Eed increased by 6% (P < 0.001). The VAC remained unchanged (0.56 to 0.56, P = 0.912). Of these patients, 29 had MACE, and those with MACE had significantly higher postoperative VAC. Additionally, a higher postoperative VAC was an independent risk factor for a longer postoperative hospital stay (P = 0.038)., Conclusions: These data suggest that ventriculoarterial decoupling is associated with poor postoperative outcomes after LT.

Purpose: To understand the current practice of radiation oncologists (ROs) and orthopedic surgeons (OSs) regarding spine metastasis., Methods: In 2022, an internet-based survey was conducted for ROs and OSs who treat spinal metastasis in Korea. Respondents were asked to choose the treatment option for two clinical scenarios. Scenario 1 involved a case displaying symptoms of leg weakness due to spinal cord compression and Scenario 2 involved a case with back pain due to pathologic compression fracture. The survey also included a question that required respondents to rank the importance of 11 clinical factors that affect treatment decisions., Results: Forty-nine ROs and 30 OSs responded to the survey. There were significant differences in treatment choices between two groups for both scenarios ( P = 0.001). In Scenario 1, more OSs chose surgical resection than ROs (43.3% vs. 16.7%), while more ROs chose radiotherapy than OSs (83.3% vs. 53.3%). In Scenario 2, a similar proportion of OSs and ROs chose radiotherapy (OSs, 71.4% vs. ROs, 67.3%), while more OSs opted for prophylactic fixation after radiotherapy than ROs (95.0% vs. 42.4%). The top three factors influencing treatment decisions were general performance status, life expectancy, and spinal instability for both ROs and OSs. In both Scenarios 1 and 2, the treatment decisions of ROs changed significantly when clinical conditions related to these top three factors were altered., Conclusion: Although ROs and OSs share the same factors influencing treatment decisions for spinal metastases, notable differences exist in their actual treatment preferences, with ROs preferring radiotherapy and OSs opting for surgical resection.
