Abstract Stanniocalcin 1 (STC1) is a calcium- and phosphate-regulating hormone that is expressed in all tissues, including bone tissues, and is involved in calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Previously, STC1 expression was found to be increased by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] administration in renal proximal tubular cells. In this study, we investigated whether STC1 directly regulates osteoblast differentiation or reciprocally controls the effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 on osteoblasts to contribute to bone homeostasis. We found that STC1 inhibited osteoblast differentiation in vitro and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2)-induced ectopic bone formation in vivo. Moreover, 1,25(OH)2D3 increased STC1 expression through direct binding to the Stc1 promoter of the vitamin D receptor (VDR). STC1 activated the 1,25(OH)2D3–VDR signaling pathway through the upregulation of VDR expression mediated by the inhibition of Akt phosphorylation in osteoblasts. STC1 further increased the effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 on receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) secretion and inhibited osteoblast differentiation by exhibiting a positive correlation with 1,25(OH)2D3. The long-bone phenotype of transgenic mice overexpressing STC1 specifically in osteoblasts was not significantly different from that of wild-type mice. However, compared with that in the wild-type mice, 1,25(OH)2D3 administration significantly decreased bone mass in the STC1 transgenic mice. Collectively, these results suggest that STC1 negatively regulates osteoblast differentiation and bone formation; however, the inhibitory effect of STC1 on osteoblasts is transient and can be reversed under normal conditions. Nevertheless, the synergistic effect of STC1 and 1,25(OH)2D3 through 1,25(OH)2D3 administration may reduce bone mass by inhibiting osteoblast differentiation.

Skin healing occurs through an intricate process called wound healing which comprises four phases: coagulation and hemostasis, inflammation, cellular proliferation, and remodeling. Chronic wounds often arise because of prolonged or excessive inflammation, which hinders the healing process and wound closure. Despite the recognized efficacy of Pogostemon cablin (patchouli) in wound healing, the precise mechanism of action of Pogostemon cablin extract (PCE) on inflammation and wound healing remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of PCE on cell proliferation and wound healing, as well as its anti-inflammatory activity, using in vitro experiments. We found that PCE increased cell proliferation and expression of the cell proliferation marker Ki67 and accelerated wound healing in human keratinocytes through the activation of OR2AT4. Furthermore, PCE exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 and -8 in lipopolysaccharide-treated and TNF-α-exposed THP-1 and HaCaT cells, respectively. Overall, these findings suggest that PCE holds therapeutic potential by promoting cell proliferation, facilitating wound healing, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects.

Background: In the current study, we evaluated whether atopic dermatitis (AD) affects the entire body rather than being limited to skin barrier damage and inflammation. We hypothesized that medium-term exposure of distant organs to systemic inflammatory cytokines in sub-chronic inflammatory skin diseases has detrimental effects on distant tissues. Results: Our findings demonstrated the dysregulation of genes and pathways associated with inflammation and the skin barrier, as well as genes and pathways involved in muscle development that respond to chemicals or stress in muscle tissues, all of which were reversed by hydrocortisone (Hc) administration. The expression of Ces1d showed significant differences during disease onset and after treatment in both skin and skeletal muscle, suggesting that Ces1d is likely responsible for the alleviation of subchronic AD. Conclusions: Using NC/Nga mice with AD-like symptoms, we compared the transcriptomes of the skeletal muscle (a tissue that is relatively distant from the skin) with those of the skin (the lesion induction site) before and after disease induction, after which Hc was administered. Although further study is needed to better understand the effects of Ces1d on AD, skeletal muscle was associated with AD pathogenesis, and AD-like symptoms appeared to affect the body in a systemic manner. ABSTRACT Background Methods Results Conclusion The need for research on individual home therapies to promote continued community‐dwelling among older adults with mild dementia is growing. This study aimed to compare the effects of individual occupation‐based reminiscence therapy at home (IOBRT‐H) and individual occupation‐based reminiscence therapy in a dementia care centre (IOBRT‐DCC) on cognitive function, depression, and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) among community‐dwelling older adults with mild dementia.This study was a randomised controlled trial. Twenty‐six community‐dwelling older adults with mild dementia were randomised to the IOBRT‐H (n = 13) and IOBRT‐DCC (n = 13) groups. The intervention was conducted for 10 weeks, with one session a week and each session lasting 60 min for both groups. Cognitive function was assessed using the Allen Cognitive Level Screen (ACLS), depression with the short form of the Geriatric Depression Scale Korean version (SGDS‐K), and IADL using the Seoul‐Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (S‐IADL).Both the IOBRT‐H and IOBRT‐DCC groups showed significant improvements in ACLS scores (P < 0.01 and P < 0.01, respectively). The SGDS‐K score decreased only in the IOBRT‐H group (P < 0.01). Between the groups, the IOBRT‐H group had significantly greater improvements in both ACLS and SGDS‐K scores than the IOBRT‐DCC group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.05, respectively).This study's results indicated the potential for applying IBORT‐H as an intervention to improve cognitive function and reduce depression in community‐dwelling older adults with mild dementia. Background: Interest in post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome following COVID-19 infection has been increasing. Maintaining quality of life (QoL) is vital for airline crews because they work in a special environment, where they are responsible for the passengers' safety. This study aims to closely investigate factors affecting the QoL of airline crews, including post-COVID-19 syndrome. Methods : This study was designed as a cross-sectional survey, comprising 167 crews. Findings : Age-specific significant differences were observed in social, overall, and total QoL scores. The physical domain QoL was significantly higher in the cockpit crews than that in the cabin crews. Significant differences were found in psychological and overall QoL depending on years of continuous service. Social domain and environmental QoL were lower in those who had no symptoms after being diagnosed with COVID-19 than in those who were symptomatic. Among the participants, 4.2% had post-COVID-19 syndrome, indicating significant differences in the physical domain, depending on whether they exhibit post-COVID-19 syndrome. Conclusion : It is urgent to develop measures to increase the QoL of airline crews, investigate post-COVID-19 syndrome before returning to work, and develop strategies to manage it. Application to practice : The QoL among airline crews differed not only by the demographic characteristics of the participants but also by the presence of symptoms during COVID-19 diagnosis and post-COVID-19 syndrome. Higher QoL among airline crews is associated with the safety of both airline crews and passengers. Background: Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are prevalent in older adults with dementia and subsequent falls or fall-related injuries. The present study determined the risk of falls or fall-related injuries associated with PIM use in older adults with dementia. Methods: The National Health Insurance Service-Elderly Cohort Database 2.0 (NHIS-ECDB 2.0) was used for this self-controlled case series (SCCS) study. This study included 1430 participants who went through exposure and non-exposure periods of PIM application among patients with dementia and experienced outcome events of falls or fall-related injuries between January 2016 and December 2019. The incidence of falls or fall-related injuries during the exposure and post-exposure periods was compared with that during the non-exposure period. Beers Criteria were used to define PIMs in patients with dementia. Negative binomial regression was conducted. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) was used to determine the risk of falls or fall-related injuries. Results: During the exposure periods in which falls or fall-related injuries occurred, the mean number of PIMs among patients with dementia was 3.76 (SD = 2.99), and the most commonly used PIMs among patients with dementia were first-generation antihistamines (n = 283; 59.1%). Compared to the non-exposure period, the adjusted IRR during the exposure period was 1.57 (95% CI = 1.39–1.76). The risk of falls or fall-related injuries was increased when PIM use in patients with dementia was initiated (1–14 days: IRR = 2.76, 95% CI = 2.31–3.28; 15–28 days: IRR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.48–2.56; ≥ 29 days: IRR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.01–1.35). Especially, an increased risk of falls or fall-related injuries was associated with greater PIM use among patients with dementia. Conclusion: Among older adults with dementia, PIMs significantly increase the risk of falls and fall-related injuries. The demand for eco-friendly wearable sensors is driving the exploration of stretchable, biocompatible, conductive, and recyclable materials for detecting electromechanical signals from the human body. Herein, a straightforward method for producing stretchable, conductive, water-permeable, low-hysteresis, and recyclable hybrid films is proposed, based on a combination of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and lab-synthesized poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (L-PEDOT:PSS). Fine-tuning the film composition yields a stretchable and high-performance sensing material with ultralow hysteresis. The composite film is stable even when subjected to 5000 strained stretch-release cycles and exhibits an efficient thermoresistive response. The on-skin sensor derived from the HEC/L-PEDOT:PSS composite conforms to diverse body movements without sacrificing structural integrity. The sensors exhibit high sensitivity, stability, rapid response times, and low power consumption, enabling efficient monitoring of subtle human activities, such as handwriting, frowning, air flow, and even diaphragmatic breathing. Our sensors not only demonstrate excellent recycling, but also exhibit almost complete recovery of both mechanical and electrical functions upon recycling. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the HEC/PEDOT:PSS composite as a multifunctional and recyclable on-skin sensor. HEC/L-PEDOT:PSS composite films are promising for the advancement of on-skin sensors and will contribute to the development of high-performance, eco-friendly, and zero-waste wearable sensors. Background: Polypharmacy is a global public health concern. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy and trends in the use of commonly used and potentially inappropriate medications among older Korean patients. Methods: Individuals aged ≥ 65 years who were prescribed any medication between 2014 and 2018 were selected from the Korean National Health Information Database. Joinpoint regression analyses were used to determine trends in the age-adjusted polypharmacy rates by age group. The prescription rates of the most commonly used medications and the most commonly used potentially inappropriate medications were analysed by year or age group for patients with polypharmacy using the chi-square and proportion difference tests. Results: This study included 1,849,968 patients, 661,206 (35.7%) of whom had polypharmacy. Age-adjusted polypharmacy rates increased significantly between 2014 and 2018 (P = 0.046). Among patients with polypharmacy, the most commonly prescribed medications were aspirin (100 mg), atorvastatin, metformin, glimepiride, and rosuvastatin. The most commonly prescribed and potentially inappropriate medications were alprazolam, diazepam, amitriptyline, zolpidem, and dimenhydrinate. There was a significant decrease in the prescription rates for each of these drugs in 2018 compared with 2014 among patients with polypharmacy (all P < 0.001), whereas there was a significant increase in alprazolam prescription among patients aged ≥ 85 years when analysed by age group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study revealed an increasing prevalence of polypharmacy among older adults. Additionally, it highlighted that the utilisation of commonly prescribed potentially inappropriate medications, such as benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants, has remained persistent, particularly among patients aged ≥ 85 years who practiced polypharmacy. Several members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF‐β) superfamily regulate the proliferation, differentiation, and function of bone‐forming osteoblasts and bone‐resorbing osteoclasts. However, it is still unknown whether Nodal, a member of the TGF‐β superfamily, serves a function in bone cells. In this study, we found that Nodal did not have any function in osteoblasts but instead negatively regulated osteoclast differentiation. Nodal inhibited RANKL‐induced osteoclast differentiation by downregulating the expression of pro‐osteoclastogenic genes, including c‐fos, Nfatc1, and Blimp1, and upregulating the expression of antiosteoclastogenic genes, including Bcl6 and Irf8. Nodal activated STAT1 in osteoclast precursor cells, and STAT1 downregulation significantly reduced the inhibitory effect of Nodal on osteoclast differentiation. These findings indicate that Nodal activates STAT1 to downregulate or upregulate the expression of pro‐osteoclastogenic or antiosteoclastogenic genes, respectively, leading to the inhibition of osteoclast differentiation. In addition to cellular damage, ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury induces substantial damage to the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. In this study, we sought to determine whether impaired mitochondrial function owing to IR could be restored by transplanting mitochondria into the heart under ex vivo IR states. Additionally, we aimed to provide preliminary results to inform therapeutic options for ischemic heart disease (IHD). Healthy mitochondria isolated from autologous gluteus maximus muscle were transplanted into the hearts of Sprague-Dawley rats damaged by IR using the Langendorff system, and the heart rate and oxygen consumption capacity of the mitochondria were measured to confirm whether heart function was restored. In addition, relative expression levels were measured to identify the genes related to IR injury. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption capacity was found to be lower in the IR group than in the group that underwent mitochondrial transplantation after IR injury (p < 0.05), and the control group showed a tendency toward increased oxygen consumption capacity compared with the IR group. Among the genes related to fatty acid metabolism, Cpt1b (p < 0.05) and Fads1 (p < 0.01) showed significant expression in the following order: IR group, IR + transplantation group, and control group. Human monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1 (MCP‐1) in mice has two orthologs, MCP‐1 and MCP‐5. MCP‐1, which is highly expressed in osteoclasts rather than in osteoclast precursor cells, is an important factor in osteoclast differentiation. However, the roles of MCP‐5 in osteoclasts are completely unknown. In this study, contrary to MCP‐1, MCP‐5 was downregulated during receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)‐induced osteoclast differentiation and was considered an inhibitory factor in osteoclast differentiation. The inhibitory role of MCP‐5 in osteoclast differentiation was closely related to the increase in Ccr5 expression and the inhibition of IκB degradation by RANKL. Transgenic mice expressing MCP‐5 controlled by Mx‐1 promoter exhibited an increased bone mass because of a decrease in osteoclasts. Background: Liriope platyphylla and organic acids (humic and fulvic acids) as additives in the feedstock may aid in decreasing CH4 formation in the rumen. Based on previous studies, Hanwoo steers were raised with feedstock added with Liriope platyphylla and organic acids and their fecal samples were analyzed to determine the changes in their organic matter and nitrogen content determining the GHG emissions from feces in the form of CH4 and N2O. Methods: Ten Hanwoo cattle were provided with experimental diet and their weights were measured to determine harmful effects of experimental diet and measure fecal composition. To measure CH4 emission from the rumen in vitro, rumen fluid with Liriope platyphylla 1.0% and organic acids 0.05% added to the feed was prepared and incubated in triplicate. Result: The addition of Liriope platyphylla had a positive effect on immune function and blood composition, as well as CH4 reduction and further the addition of organic acids resulted in the lowering of CH4 emissions when compared with that of the control. The addition of Liriope platyphylla and organic acids is a potential additive of reducing CH4 emissions from ruminants without disrupting cattle growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the effect of Cr thin film deposition on the thermal stability and corrosion resistance of hot-dip aluminized steel. A high-quality Cr thin film was deposited on the surface of the Al-9 wt. % Si-coated steel sheets by physical vapor deposition. When the Al-Si coated steel sheets were exposed to a high temperature of 500°C, Fe from the steel substrate diffused into the Al-Si coating layer resulting in discoloration. However, the highly heat-resistant Cr thin film deposited on the Al-Si coating prevented diffusion and surface exposure of Fe, improving the heat and corrosion resistances of the Al-Si alloy coated steel sheet. Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in mandibular width and frontal view ramus inclination using cone beam CT in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion who underwent BSSRO, with the removal of bone interference between segments. Methods For all 20 subjects, cone-beam CT imaging was performed prior to surgery (T1), immediately post-surgery (T2), and 6 months after surgery (T3). Reorientation was performed using R2GATE software (MegaGen, Seoul, Korea). The gonion and antegonial notch were used as reference points in the sagittal view, and the most lateral point of the condyle head was used as the reference point in the frontal view. We present a case of iatrogenic iliac vein rupture with venous thrombosis during total hip arthroplasty that was endovascularly treated with the insertion of covered and uncovered stents, aspiration, and balloon maceration of the thrombus. We describe in detail, with a schematic diagram, an endovascular treatment method that can be performed under local anesthesia alone and explain how to overcome the situation when the diameter of the covered stent is inadequate to cover the iliac vein.

In this case report, the authors present three cases of post-tracheostomy site bleeding successfully treated using embolization, supplemented by CT and angiography images. This report highlights that embolization can be a viable alternative when surgical or endoscopic interventions fail or are not applicable in cases of post-tracheostomy bleeding.

Abstract Background Mitochondria are known to synthesize adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through oxidative phosphorylation. Understanding and accurately measuring mitochondrial ATP synthesis rate can provide insights into the functional status of mitochondria and how it contributes to overall cellular energy homeostasis. Traditional methods only estimate mitochondrial function by measuring ATP levels at a single point in time or through oxygen consumption rates. This study introduced the relative mitochondrial ATP synthesis response against inhibiting and stimulating substrates (MitoRAISE), designed to detect real-time changes in ATP levels as the cells respond to substrates. Methods The sensitivity and specificity of the MitoRAISE assay were verified under various conditions, including the isolation of mitochondria, variations in cell numbers, cells exhibiting mitochondrial damage, and heterogeneous mixtures. Using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), we analyzed MitoRAISE data from 19 patients with breast cancer and 23 healthy women. Results The parameters observed in the MitoRAISE data increased depending on the quantity of isolated mitochondria and cell count, whereas it remained unmeasured in mitochondrial-damaged cell lines. Basal ATP, rotenone response, malonate response, and mitochondrial DNA copy numbers were lower in PBMCs from patients with breast cancer than in those from healthy women. Conclusions The MitoRAISE assay has demonstrated its sensitivity and specificity by measuring relative ATP synthesis rates under various conditions. We propose MitoRAISE assay as a potential tool for monitoring changes in the mitochondrial metabolic status associated with various diseases.

In this report, we present a case of a radiotherapy-induced tracheoesophageal fistula treated with the fluoroscopy-guided insertion of a covered stent through the gastrostomy route using both the antegrade and retrograde approaches. The initial antegrade endoscopic and fluoroscopic stent insertion procedure failed due to severe esophageal stricture. Compared to the endoscopic approaches, fluoroscopy-guided radiologic procedures are generally less invasive and more successful because they allow for a better understanding of the anatomy outside the lumen during the procedure and enable the use of devices with smaller diameters.

Background: This study aims to identify distinct microbial and functional biomarkers characteristic of body-first or brain-first subtypes of Parkinson's disease (PD). This could illuminate the unique pathogenic mechanisms within these subtypes. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we classified 36 well-characterized PD patients into body-first, brain-first, or undetermined subtypes based on the presence of premotor REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and cardiac meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake. We then conducted an in-depth shotgun metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiome for each subtype and compared the results with those from age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results: Significant differences were found in the gut microbiome of body-first PD patients (n = 15) compared to both brain-first PD patients (n = 9) and healthy controls. The gut microbiome in body-first PD showed a distinct profile, characterized by an increased presence of Escherichia coli and Akkermansia muciniphila, and a decreased abundance of short-chain fatty acid-producing commensal bacteria. These shifts were accompanied by a higher abundance of microbial genes associated with curli protein biosynthesis and a lower abundance of genes involved in putrescine and spermidine biosynthesis. Furthermore, the combined use of premotor RBD and MIBG criteria was more strongly correlated with these microbiome differences than the use of each criterion independently. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the significant role of dysbiotic and pathogenic gut microbial alterations in body-first PD, supporting the body-first versus brain-first hypothesis. These insights not only reinforce the gut microbiome's potential as a therapeutic target in PD but also suggest the possibility of developing subtype-specific treatment strategies.

This article presents a compact, planar, and circularly polarized array antenna operating in the W-band (84.5–110 GHz), with all its prototypes fabricated using a low-cost, traditional, microwave printed circuit board composed of Rogers RT/duroid 5880 (ɛr = 2.2, tanδ = 0.009). The final design that was fabricated and measured was a 4 × 4 array antenna having an overall size of 9 mm × 20 mm × 0.254 mm that used series feeding to reduce its sidelobes. Measurements of the 4 × 4 patch antenna array showed approximately 6.9% 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth along with 15.2 dBi maximum right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna gain at 100 GHz. The array antenna yielded RHCP radiation characterized by a low profile, low cross-polarization levels (91%). Additionally, a two-port MIMO antenna system was investigated by considering side-by-side and front-to-front configurations, both of which achieved good isolation and considerable envelope correlation coefficient and diversity gain values. Therefore, the proposed series array and MIMO antennas can be reasonable candidates for 6G applications of the sub-THz band (100–110 GHz) in ultra-high-speed wireless and satellite communication systems.

If the cause of the bile leakage after hepaticojejunostomy is accidental non-anastomosis of one bile duct, it is unlikely that the leakage will resolve spontaneously, and reoperation may be necessary. However, if the patient has contraindications to surgery, other treatments should be considered. In this case report, we describe a new percutaneous tract creation between the isolated right bile duct and Roux-en-Y afferent jejunal loop in a patient who underwent hepaticojejunostomy, and the right bile duct was accidentally not anastomosed with the jejunal loop.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is characterized by progressive pathological changes that require timely and accurate diagnosis. The early detection and progression assessment of ILD are important for effective management. This study introduces a novel quantitative evaluation method utilizing chest radiographs to analyze pixel-wise changes in ILD. Using a weakly supervised learning framework, the approach incorporates the contrastive unpaired translation model and a newly developed ILD extent scoring algorithm for more precise and objective quantification of disease changes than conventional visual assessments. The ILD extent score calculated through this method demonstrated a classification accuracy of 92.98% between ILD and normal classes. Additionally, using an ILD follow-up dataset for interval change analysis, this method assessed disease progression with an accuracy of 85.29%. These findings validate the reliability of the ILD extent score as a tool for ILD monitoring. The results of this study suggest that the proposed quantitative method may improve the monitoring and management of ILD.

Background: Apathy is an important but unrecognised aspect of Parkinson's disease (PD). The optimal therapeutic options for apathy remain unclear. Early recognition and treatment of apathy can reduce the significant burden of disease for patients and their caregivers. Here we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the comparative efficacy of different treatment modalities of apathy in PD (CRD42021292099). Methods: We screened Medline, Embase, and PsycINFO databases for articles on therapies for apathy in PD. The outcome of interest is the reduction in apathy scores post-intervention and is measured by standardised mean differences (SMD) with 95% credible intervals (CrI). We included only randomised controlled trials examining interventions targeted at reducing apathy. Results: Nineteen studies involving 2372 patients were included in the quantitative analysis. The network meta-analysis found pharmacotherapy to be the most efficacious treatment, significantly better than brain stimulation (SMD -0.43, 95% CrI −0.78 to −0.07), exercise-based interventions (SMD -0.66, 95% CrI −1.25 to −0.08), supplements (SMD -0.33, 95% CrI −0.67 to 0), and placebo (SMD -0.38, 95% CrI −0.56 to −0.23). Subgroup analysis of pharmacotherapy versus placebo found similar efficacy of dopamine agonists (SMD -0.36, 95% CI -0.59 to −0.12, P = 0.003) and alternative medications (SMD -0.42, 95% CI -0.61 to −0.23, P

Herein, we proposed a unique structural design for indium gallium nitride (InGaN) based blue resonant cavity micro-light-emitting diodes (RC-μ-LEDs), focusing on the design, fabrication, and the relevant performance analyses. The proposed RC-μ-LEDs possess a three-layer staggered InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) within the nanoporous Distributed Bragg Reflectors (NP-DBRs) and the conventional DBRs, introducing light confinement within such a resonant cavity. A passivation layer using atomic layer deposition (ALD) is adopted to reduce the leakage current from sidewall defects as well. Consequently, for the resulting RC-μ-LEDs, the divergence angle (DA) can be achieved down to 39.04°. While the input current increases from 1.77 A/cm² to 54 A/cm², the peak wavelength will shift from 456.16 nm to 449.18 nm, a blue shift of only 6.98 nm. Finally, we also discuss the temperature-dependent characteristics and the corresponding behaviors of our RC-μ-LEDs. Our demonstrated RC-μ-LEDs exhibit great wavelength stability with a diminished divergence angle, thus enabling full-color and low-crosstalk micro-LED displays for on-demand high-resolution applications.

Abstract Background In the current study, we evaluated whether atopic dermatitis (AD) affects the entire body rather than being limited to skin barrier damage and inflammation. We hypothesized that medium-term exposure of distant organs to systemic inflammatory cytokines in sub-chronic inflammatory skin diseases has detrimental effects on distant tissues. Results Our findings demonstrated the dysregulation of genes and pathways associated with inflammation and the skin barrier, as well as genes and pathways involved in muscle development that respond to chemicals or stress in muscle tissues, all of which were reversed by hydrocortisone (Hc) administration. The expression of Ces1d showed significant differences during disease onset and after treatment in both skin and skeletal muscle, suggesting that Ces1d is likely responsible for the alleviation of subchronic AD. Conclusions Using NC/Nga mice with AD-like symptoms, we compared the transcriptomes of the skeletal muscle (a tissue that is relatively distant from the skin) with those of the skin (the lesion induction site) before and after disease induction, after which Hc was administered. Although further study is needed to better understand the effects of Ces1d on AD, skeletal muscle was associated with AD pathogenesis, and AD-like symptoms appeared to affect the body in a systemic manner. Given the importance of evidence-based medicine and the development of precision medicine, our findings provide insights into the mechanisms of AD onset and progression.

Background/Aims The Gout Impact Scale (GIS), a part of the Gout Assessment Questionnaire 2.0, is used to measure gout-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Although several studies have been conducted on the factors affecting the HRQOL of patients with gout, few have focused on lifestyle factors. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between lifestyle habits and HRQOL using the GIS in patients with gout. Methods We used data from the Urate-Lowering TheRApy in Gout (ULTRA) registry, a prospective cohort of Korean patients with gout treated at multiple centers nationwide. The patients were aged ≥18 years and met the 2015 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism gout classification criteria. They were asked to complete a GIS and questions regarding their lifestyle habits at enrollment. Results The study included 232 patients. ‘Gout concern overall’ scores in the GIS were significantly lower in patients who exercised more frequently and consumed soft drinks and meat less, and ‘well-being during attack’ scores were significantly lower in patients who consumed vegetables and exercised more frequently. The frequency of vegetable consumption had a negative linear relationship with the ‘well-being during attack’ and ‘gout concern during attack’ scores (p = 0.01, p = 0.001, respectively). The frequency of exercise had a negative linear relationship with the ‘gout concern overall’ and ‘gout concern during attack’ scores (p = 0.04 and p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusions Patients with gout who frequently consumed vegetables and exercised regularly experienced less impact of gout, exhibiting a better GIS that represented HRQOL.

Abstract Background Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are prevalent in older adults with dementia and subsequent falls or fall-related injuries. The present study determined the risk of falls or fall-related injuries associated with PIM use in older adults with dementia. Methods The National Health Insurance Service-Elderly Cohort Database 2.0 (NHIS-ECDB 2.0) was used for this self-controlled case series (SCCS) study. This study included 1430 participants who went through exposure and non-exposure periods of PIM application among patients with dementia and experienced outcome events of falls or fall-related injuries between January 2016 and December 2019. The incidence of falls or fall-related injuries during the exposure and post-exposure periods was compared with that during the non-exposure period. Beers Criteria were used to define PIMs in patients with dementia. Negative binomial regression was conducted. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) was used to determine the risk of falls or fall-related injuries. Results During the exposure periods in which falls or fall-related injuries occurred, the mean number of PIMs among patients with dementia was 3.76 (SD = 2.99), and the most commonly used PIMs among patients with dementia were first-generation antihistamines (n = 283; 59.1%). Compared to the non-exposure period, the adjusted IRR during the exposure period was 1.57 (95% CI = 1.39–1.76). The risk of falls or fall-related injuries was increased when PIM use in patients with dementia was initiated (1–14 days: IRR = 2.76, 95% CI = 2.31–3.28; 15–28 days: IRR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.48–2.56; ≥ 29 days: IRR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.01–1.35). Especially, an increased risk of falls or fall-related injuries was associated with greater PIM use among patients with dementia. Conclusion Among older adults with dementia, PIMs significantly increase the risk of falls and fall-related injuries. Therefore, strategies should be developed to manage PIM prescriptions in patients with dementia to prevent falls.
