Interspecific interactions are crucial in shaping ecosystem dynamics (Connell 1983, Tilman 1987, Barbosa and Castellanos 2005). Non-native ungulates have been introduced across the globe (Ferretti and Lovari 2014, Volery et al. 2021) and in environments where multiple invasives thrive, these co-occurring sympatric species may shift spatiotemporal patterns to minimize interspecific competition (Schoener 1974, Chesson 2000). Spatiotemporal shifts can lead to cascading effects to the native flora and fauna (Simberloff and Von Holle 1999). Given the potential negative impacts, understanding these interactions is vital for effective management of these ecosystems. Two invasive ungulates, the wild pig (Sus scrofa) and the Philippine deer (Rusa marianna), have inhabited much of Guam since their introduction in the 1600s and 1700s (Intoh 1986, Wiles et al. 1999) and both have been associated with significant ecological damage throughout the island (Conroy 1989). Despite sharing similar invasive roles, they seemingly coexist throughout areas of Guam. Subsequently, efforts are increasingly put forth to remove both species from partitioned areas at one time. To aid these efforts and understand invasive species interactions, we studied the seasonal spatiotemporal patterns of wild pigs and Philippine deer during February 2021-March 2022. Specifically, we used GPS collars from 39 wild pigs and 22 deer to examine spatial and temporal partitioning and assess dynamic spatiotemporal interactions between interspecific dyads at seasonal scales. We investigated spatial partitioning of wild pigs and deer by estimating the spatial overlap between home ranges and core areas of interspecific neighboring dyads. We estimated temporal overlap in diel activity to evaluate temporal partitioning between the species. Lastly, we examined dynamic spatiotemporal interactions, those that occur simultaneously in space and time, by estimating movement interactions between neighboring interspecific dyads to understand attraction and avoidance. We found spatial overlap between the species decreased significantly in core areas compared to home ranges in both seasons. Within home ranges, deer were approximately 3 times more likely to be within pig ranges than vice versa. This effect diminished at core areas such that deer were only 1.3× more likely to be within pig core ranges than vice versa. Temporal overlap of activity between wild pigs and deer was very high during dry and wet seasons, with overlapping activity peaks during crepuscular hours. At a critical distance threshold of 50m, we estimated 77 movement interactions from 58 dyad pairs over 3 seasons and found that only 2 (2.6%) and 4 (5.2%) movement interactions were considered avoidant and attractive, respectively, and the remaining 71 interactions (92.2%) were neutral.

While basaltic volcanism is dominant during rifting and continental breakup, felsic magmatism may be a significant component of some rift margins. During International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 396 on the continental margin of Norway, a graphite‐garnet‐cordierite bearing dacitic unit (the Mimir dacite) was recovered in two holes within early Eocene sediments on Mimir High (Site U1570), a marginal high on the Vøring Transform Margin. Here, we present a comprehensive textural, petrological, and geochemical study of the Mimir dacite in order to assess its origin and discuss the geodynamic implications. The major mineral phases (garnet, cordierite, quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar) are hosted in a fresh rhyolitic, vesicular, glassy matrix that is locally mingled with sediments. The major element chemistry of garnet and cordierite, the presence of zircon inclusions with inherited cores, and thermobarometric calculations all support an upper crustal metapelitic origin. While most magma‐rich margin models favor crustal anatexis in the lower crust, thermobarometric calculations performed here show that the Mimir dacite was produced at upper‐crustal depths (<5 kbar, 18 km depth) and high temperature (750–800°C) with up to 3 wt% water content. In situ U‐Pb analyses on zircon inclusions give a magmatic crystallization age of 54.6 ± 1.1 Ma, consistent with emplacement that post‐dates the Paleocene‐Eocene Thermal Maximum. Our results suggest that the opening of the Northeast Atlantic was associated with a phase of low‐pressure, high‐temperature crustal anatexis preceding the main phase of magmatism. Plain Language Summary: Fifty‐six million years ago, the continents were beginning the final phase of their journey to their modern‐day locations. This included the rifting and formation of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, known in particular for producing considerable magmatism during continental break‐up. In summer 2021, Expedition 396 of the International Ocean Discovery Program drilled the oceanic floor off the coast of present‐day Norway to collect volcanic and sedimentary rocks deposited at this time. Their main goal was to investigate the cause of the excess magmatism and its potential implications for the global climate. While sampling sediments on the expedition, an unexpected volcanic unit, a glassy garnet‐cordierite dacite, was recovered. To determine its origin, we combined multiple methods (petrography, stratigraphy, thermodynamic calculations, petrochronology, in situ compositional analyses) and showed that the unit is a product of melting of in the continental crust at shallow depth during the rifting process and likely later emplaced in shallow water. Our results demonstrate that the rifting process in the Northeast Atlantic included a long and intense period of continental crustal thinning. This research provides evidence needed to reconstruct the evolution of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Objectives: While anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs can reduce vaccine intentions, longitudinal research shows that vaccine hesitancy can increase conspiracy beliefs. In three experiments ( N  = 949), we examined the effect of fear about a vaccine on vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs., Method and Measures: In Studies 1a ( N  = 221) and 1b ( N  = 508), participants were exposed to high fear ( vs low fear) about a (fictional) vaccine before reporting vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs. In Study 2, all participants were exposed to high fear before being asked to think about not getting vaccinated ( vs vaccinated) against the (fictional) disease. Participants then reported their vaccine hesitancy, anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs, and closeness to others who distrust official narratives., Results: In Studies 1a and 1b, exposure to high fear ( vs low fear) increased vaccine hesitancy, which was positively correlated with anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs. The reverse model's effect was either smaller (Study 1a) or non-significant (Study 1b). In Study 2, fear and not wanting to vaccinate resulted in vaccine hesitancy, which then predicted anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs and feeling closer to those distrusting official narratives., Conclusion: Therefore, fear creates a response not to get vaccinated. A conspiracy belief may then justify this response.

Synthetic extracellular matrices are artificial polymers that are elongated and deposited as a matrix of nanofibers which mimic the native extracellular matrix. RenovoDerm® Anthem™ Wound Matrix (Columbus, Ohio) is comprised of polyglycolic acid and poly (L-lactide-co-caprolactone) which degrade by hydrolysis into a-hydroxy and fatty acids, lowering the pH and promoting regenerative cellular activity including angiogenesis. Amniotic allografts contain growth factors, cytokines, amino acids, extracellular matrix proteins, and hyaluronic acid which are recognized as intrinsic to the wound healing process. Synthetic extracellular matrices alone or in combination with amnio allografts do not have large bodies of evidence which demonstrate their effectiveness in the treatment of wounds. Presently, no prior studies have been performed to assess what impact these therapies may have on wound healing when used concurrently. The aim of this investigation was to assess whether a synergistic effect is produced with combination therapy using synthetic extracellular matrix and amniotic allografting. In this article, we present four cases of diabetic foot ulcerations treated with combination therapy. An amniotic fluid allograft, and/or membrane amniotic allograft, was implanted with a synthetic extracellular matrix dressing over top of the graft(s) at weekly intervals. All wounds demonstrated a greater than 80% decrease in wound size within four applications and achieved more than 95% wound closure after six applications.

In three studies with Jewish participants, we explored the consequences of intergroup conspiracy theories on those targeted. In Study 1 (N = 250), perceived Jewish conspiracy theory popularity was positively associated with intergroup threat and negatively associated with the closeness of contact with non-Jewish people. Study 2 (n = 194) employed an experimental design where Jewish participants were exposed to the idea that many (vs. few) non-Jewish people believe in Jewish conspiracy theories. A path model demonstrated that exposure to the many (vs. few) manipulation increased intergroup threat, which was then positively associated with emotional reactions. Intergroup anxiety and ingroup anger were then positively associated with avoidance, whilst ingroup anxiety was positively associated with approach tendencies. Study 3 (n = 201) used the same experimental design, and a path model revealed that conspiracy popularity increased intergroup threat, which, in turn, was positively associated with ingroup anger and anxiety. Ingroup anxiety was then associated with intentions to help ingroup members. Notably, conspiracy popularity rendered participants less likely to interact with a non-Jewish partner in a behavioural task. Our work provides evidence that conspiracy beliefs, especially when perceived to be widely held, are likely to significantly impact targeted ingroup members., (© 2023 The Authors. This research examined the effect of belief in feminist conspiracy theories and sexist ideology on endorsing rape myths. Study 1 ( N  = 201) uncovered that the relationship between feminist conspiracy beliefs and rape myth acceptance was conditional on higher levels of hostile sexism. Study 2 ( N  = 552) demonstrated that for those with higher hostile sexism, exposure to feminist conspiracy theories (vs. control) increased feminist conspiracy beliefs, which were then associated with rape myths.
