Plantation forestry is pivotal in meeting global timber and fiber demands while promoting sustainable practices. Eucalyptus plantations, renowned for their rapid growth and adaptability, have significantly expanded in tropical regions such as Thailand. Improved Eucalyptus clones have enhanced productivity, emphasizing the role of genetic improvement programs. Accurate biomass estimation in these plantations is crucial for sustainable management and bioenergy production. This study employs a nonlinear mixed model approach to evaluate tree variables combined with rotation, clones, and region on aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation. The results showed that the ''rotation, clones, region'' model emerged as the most precise, achieving the highest R² and the lowest SEE, ASE, and MPSE values. However, over-parameterization is a concern. The more straightforward ''clone'' model performed well, achieving a high R² and relatively low prediction error, with no systematic bias and comparable ASE, MPE, and MPSE values, making it a strong choice when fewer predictor variables are preferred. Our results revealed that clones H4 and K7 for the northeastern region and K58 for the eastern region show the highest annual productivity, with growth rates up to 20 t ha−1 year−1. The rapid AGB increment in clones K58, K62, and K7 during the first rotation suggests improved performance in subsequent rotations. As in eastern Thailand, selecting less arid sites can enhance these clones' AGB productivity. Additionally, intensive silvicultural practices could further boost their productive efficiency.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) show high antineoplastic potential in preclinical studies in various solid tumors, including gastric carcinoma; however, their use in clinical studies has not yet yielded convincing efficacies. Thus, further studies on cellular/molecular effects of HDACi are needed, for improving clinical efficacy and identifying suitable combination partners. Here, we investigated the role of oxidative stress in gastric cancer cells upon treatment with HDACi. A particular focus was laid on the role of the Nrf2 pathway, which can mediate resistance to cell-inhibitory effects of reactive oxidative species (ROS). Using fluorescence-based ROS sensors, oxidative stress was measured in human gastric cancer cell lines. Activation of the Nrf2 pathway was monitored in luciferase reporter assays as well as by mRNA and proteomic expression analyses of Nrf2 regulators and Nrf2-induced genes. Furthermore, the effects of ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and Nrf2-knockdown on HDACi-dependent antiproliferative effects were investigated in colorimetric formazan-based and clonogenic survival assays. HDACi treatment led to increased oxidative stress levels and consequently, treatment with NAC reduced cytotoxicity of HDACi. In addition, vorinostat treatment stimulated expression of a luciferase reporter under the control of an antioxidative response element, indicating activation of the Nrf2 system. This Nrf2 activation was only partially reversible by treatment with NAC, suggesting ROS independent pathways to contribute to HDACi-promoted Nrf2 activation. In line with its cytoprotective role, Nrf2 knockdown led to a sensitization against HDACi. Accordingly, the expression of antioxidant and detoxifying Nrf2 target genes was upregulated upon HDACi treatment. In conclusion, oxidative stress induction upon HDAC inhibition contributes to the antitumor effects of HDAC inhibitors, and activation of Nrf2 represents a potentially important adaptive response of gastric cancer cells in this context.

Anemia affects humans throughout life, and is linked to higher morbidity and mortality. Unclear is whether hemoglobin values are equivalent between women and men. This study evaluates the association of preoperative hemoglobin levels with in-hospital mortality and estimates thresholds for survival equity between men and women. All adult patients undergoing surgery between 2010 and 2019 from 14 German hospitals were included in the study. Thresholds for survival equity were determined with generalized additive models. Since their first discovery in the late 1960s, gamma-ray bursts have attracted an exponentially growing interest from the international community due to their central role in the most highly debated open questions of the modern research of astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. These range from the intimate nuclear composition of high-density material within the core of ultra-dense neuron stars, to stellar evolution via the collapse of massive stars, the production and propagation of gravitational waves, as well as the exploration of the early universe by unveiling the first stars and galaxies (assessing also their evolution and cosmic re-ionization). GRBs in the past ∼50 years have stimulated the development of cutting-edge technological instruments for observations of high-energy celestial sources from space, leading to the launch and successful operations of many different scientific missions (several of them still in data-taking mode currently). In this review, we provide a brief description of the GRB-dedicated missions from space being designed and developed for the future. The list of these projects, not meant to be exhaustive, shall serve as a reference to interested readers to understand what is likely to come next to lead the further development of GRB research and the associated phenomenology.
