1. History-Matching of Imbibition Flow in Multiscale Fractured Porous Media Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs)

Abstract

We propose a workflow based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to model multiphase fluid flow in fractured porous media. After validating the workflow in forward and inverse modeling of a synthetic problem of flow in fractured porous media, we applied it to a real experimental dataset in which brine is injected at a constant pressure drop into a CO2 saturated naturally fractured shale core plug. The exact spatial positions of natural fractures and the dynamic in-situ distribution of fluids were imaged using a CT-scan setup. To model the targeted system, we followed a domain decomposition approach for matrix and fractures and a multi-network architecture for the separate calculation of water saturation and pressure. The flow equations in the matrix, fractures and interplay between them were solved during training. Prior to fully-coupled simulations, we proposed pre-training the model. This aided in a more efficient and successful training of the coupled system. Both for the synthetic and experimental inverse problems, we determined flow parameters within the matrix and the fractures. Multiple random initializations of network and system parameters were performed to assess the uncertainty and uniqueness of the results. The results confirmed the precision of the inverse calculated parameters in retrieving the main flow characteristics of the system. The consideration of multiscale matrix-fracture impacts is commonly overlooked in existing workflows. Accounting for them led to several orders of magnitude variations in the calculated flow properties compared to not accounting for them. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed PINNs-based workflow is the first to offer a reliable and computationally efficient solution for inverse modeling of multiphase flow in fractured porous media, achieved through history-matching noisy and multi-fidelity experimental measurements., Comment: 47 pages of paper, including 19 figures

Abstract

Multimodal models, which combine visual and textual information, have recently gained significant recognition. This paper addresses the multimodal challenge of Text-Image retrieval and introduces a novel task that extends the modalities to include temporal data. The Temporal Image Caption Retrieval Competition (TICRC) presented in this paper is based on the Chronicling America and Challenging America projects, which offer access to an extensive collection of digitized historic American newspapers spanning 274 years. In addition to the competition results, we provide an analysis of the delivered dataset and the process of its creation.

Abstract

This paper discusses two approaches to the diachronic normalization of Polish texts: a rule-based solution that relies on a set of handcrafted patterns, and a neural normalization model based on the text-to-text transfer transformer architecture. The training and evaluation data prepared for the task are discussed in detail, along with experiments conducted to compare the proposed normalization solutions. A quantitative and qualitative analysis is made. It is shown that at the current stage of inquiry into the problem, the rule-based solution outperforms the neural one on 3 out of 4 variants of the prepared dataset, although in practice both approaches have distinct advantages and disadvantages., Comment: Accepted to the LaTeCH-CLfL 2024 workshop

15. A Comparative Analysis of Educational, Employment, Social Status, and Healthcare Access Outcomes between Deaf and Non-Deaf Migrants

Abstract

Migrants face various challenges in new environments, which are further compounded for those with sensory disabilities. Deaf migrants often encounter unique obstacles that affect their integration and quality of life. This study aims to explore disparities in education, employment, social integration, and healthcare access between deaf and non-deaf migrants. This research employed quantitative methods including logistic regression and Mann-Whitney U tests to analyse data collected from both deaf and non-deaf migrant groups. The study adjusted for demographic variables to isolate the effects of hearing status on various outcomes. Findings indicate that deaf migrants are less likely to achieve higher educational levels and are employed at lower rates compared to non-deaf migrants. Additionally, deaf migrants reported significantly lower subjective social status and faced greater barriers in accessing healthcare services, attributed to communication difficulties and insufficient support systems. The results underscore significant disparities faced by deaf migrants in critical areas of life. These challenges are primarily due to systemic barriers and a lack of adequate resources and accommodations that address their specific needs. The study highlights the need for targeted policies and programs to enhance educational opportunities, employment support, social integration, and healthcare accessibility for deaf migrants, ensuring their successful integration and participation in society.

Abstract

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a highly prevalent disease. We aimed to assess the symptoms that physicians who see patients with AR perceive as the most bothersome in their patients. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study based on an online questionnaire sent to all members of the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative. The survey included questions on the physicians' perceptions of patients’ AR symptoms as well as of their own AR symptoms. Results: Among 401 respondents, 155 (38.7%) reported having AR. ARIA members reported nasal symptoms to be the most frequent (89.7%) and bothersome (80.0%) symptoms experienced by themselves. Likewise, nasal symptoms were reported by ARIA members as the most frequent (94.8% in members with AR vs 96.0% in members without AR) and bothersome (57.0% in members with AR vs 67.9% in members without AR) in their patients. We found a significant association (p = 0.001) between physicians’ own symptoms and those perceived as the most bothersome in their patients. Conclusion: Physicians perceive nasal symptoms to be the most frequent and the most bothersome symptoms in AR patients. The physicians' personal experiences with AR may influence their perception of patients’ symptoms.

Abstract

Surveillance data from wildlife and poultry was used to describe the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in British Columbia (B.C.) and the Yukon, Canada from September 2022 – June 2023 compared to the first “wave” of the outbreak in this region, which occurred April – August 2022, after the initial viral introduction. Although the number of HPAI-positive poultry farms and wildlife samples was greater in “Wave 2”, cases were more tightly clustered in southwestern B.C. and the most commonly affected species differed, likely due to an influx of overwintering waterfowl in the area. Eight HPAI genetic clusters, representing seven genotypes and two inter-continental viral incursions, were detected, with significant variation in the relative abundance of each cluster between the waves. Phylogenetic data suggests multiple spillover events from wild birds to poultry and mammals but could not rule out transmission among farms and among mammals.

Abstract

Background Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the leading cause of disability worldwide. In MSK care, access to physical therapy is a major issue. The effectiveness of telerehabilitation phone assessment in improving access to care for MSK conditions has not yet been established in Saudi Arabia. Purpose To compare the effect of using a telerehabilitation phone with face-to-face care initial assessment on access to care, number of sessions and goals achievement at discharge. Methods This is a retrospective unmatched case-control analysis of a total of 724 Epic ® Electronic Medical Records guided by the Evidence standards framework for digital health technologies. Closed referrals from January 1st, 2022, to August 4th, 2022, for adults referred to Physical Therapy for MSK conditions were included. Participants who received a phone assessment were compared to those who received face-to-face care. The t-test was used to compare the means of the lead time, days to second appointment and number of treatment sessions. Univariate logistic regression was conducted to obtain the odds ratio of the outcome factors in the phone group. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ .05. Additionally,we compared the percentage of goal achievement at discharge. Prompt treatment is critical to manage the acute symptoms and prevent relapses, as highlighted by a young patient's case with optic neuritis and extensive spinal cord lesions. Abstract Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that affects the optic nerve and spinal cord. It is associated with autoantibodies against aquaporin‐4 (AQP‐4) and/or myelin oligodendrocytes glycoproteins. It is diagnosed based on clinical, radiological, and serological criteria, and treated with immunosuppressants in the acute phase. Long‐term immunosuppression is essential to prevent potential relapses. In this case report, we present the case of a 19‐year‐old female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), who presented with blurriness and loss of vision in her left eye. Optical coherence tomography was normal, but a gadolinium‐enhanced cervico‐dorsal MRI showed multiple lesions extending from the brainstem to the C7‐T1 junction suggestive of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM), the largest of which was a cystic lesion at the cervico‐spinal junction. A contrast injection also revealed left optic neuritis. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed elevated IgG and red blood cell count, but no oligoclonal bands. The patient tested positive for AQP‐4 autoantibodies, confirming the diagnosis of NMOSD. Treatment with intravenous methylprednisolone led to partial improvement, but the patient experienced a relapse with severe neurological symptoms, including tetraplegia and bladder and bowel dysfunction. This case illustrates the importance of considering NMOSD in the differential diagnosis of patients with SLE who present with optic neuritis and/or myelitis, especially when MRI findings are suggestive of LETM. Early diagnosis and adherence to treatment are crucial to prevent further relapses and deleterious sequelae.

Abstract

The field of cancer diagnostics has been revolutionized by liquid biopsies, which offer a bridge between laboratory research and clinical settings. These tests are less invasive than traditional biopsies and more convenient than routine imaging methods. Liquid biopsies allow studying of tumor-derived markers in bodily fluids, enabling the development of more precise cancer diagnostic tests for screening, disease monitoring, and therapy personalization. This study presents a multiclass approach based on deep learning to analyze and classify diseases based on blood platelet RNA. Its primary objective is to enhance cancer-type diagnosis in clinical settings by leveraging the power of deep learning combined with high-throughput sequencing of liquid biopsy. Ultimately, the study demonstrates the potential of this approach to accurately identify the patient’s type of cancer. Methods: The developed method classifies patients using heatmap images, generated based on gene expression arranged according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways. The images represent samples of patients with ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, glioblastoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and sarcoma, as well as cancer patients with brain metastasis. Results: Our deep learning-based models reached 66.51% balanced accuracy when distinguishing between those 6 sites of cancer origin and 90.5% balanced accuracy on a location-specific dataset where cancer types from close locations were grouped. The developed models were further investigated with an explainable artificial intelligence-based approach (XAI) - SHAP. They returned a set of 60 genes with the highest impact on the models’ decision-making process. Conclusions: Our results show that deep-learning methods are a promising opportunity for cancer detection and could support clinicians’ decision-making process in finding the solution for the black-box problem. Clinical and Translational Impact Statement— Utilizing TEPs-based liquid biopsies and deep learning, our study offers a novel approach to early cancer detection, highlighting cancer origin.
