Abstract

The Large Hadron Collider will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its luminosity by a factor of ~10 [1]. A crucial part of this upgrade will be replacement of the NbTi focusing magnets with Nb3Sn magnets that achieve a ~50% increase in the field strength. This will be the first ever large-scale implementation of Nb3Sn magnets in a particle accelerator. The High-Luminosity LHC Upgrade, HL-LHC is a CERN project with a world-wide collaboration. It is under construction and utilizes Nb3Sn Magnets (named MQXF) as key ingredients to increase tenfold the integrated luminosity delivered to the CMS and ATLAS experiments in the next decade. The HL-LHC AUP is the US effort to contribute approximately 50% of the low-beta focusing magnets and crab cavities for the HL-LHC. This paper will present the program to fabricate the Nb3Sn superconducting magnets. 2. Bronze age supply chains between ancient Egypt and Nubia revealed by lead isotope analysis of kohl samples

Abstract

Abstract While there is a considerable body of data regarding the sources of minerals employed in Bronze Age Egypt, the supply chains to Sudanese Lower Nubia are virtually unknown. This paper presents results of lead isotope analysis of 11 samples of kohl from C-group, Pan-grave and New Kingdom funerary contexts across the Debeira and Ashkeit areas in Sudanese Lower Nubia during the Bronze Age. The samples could be divided in two groups based on their lead isotope ratios. A comparison between the kohl samples from Sudanese Lower Nubia and galena ores from various mining sites on the Red Sea coast of Egypt indicated that some of the galena used in kohl mixtures in Sudanese Lower Nubia came from the Pharaonic mining site of Gebel el-Zeit. The second group of Nubian samples seems to have originated from an alternative galena source yet to be determined. This is the first time that kohl samples from Sudanese Lower Nubia are integrated into known northeast African networks of supply by using Lead isotope analysis.

11. Thermal Inspection of Low Emissivity Surfaces Using a Pulsed Light Emitting Diodes (PLED) Heat Source

Abstract

Thermal inspections of a structure typically utilize a flash or quartz lamp heat source located on the same side of an infrared camera. The heat source provides light energy for heating while the infrared camera measures the surface transient temperature response. The inspection can be difficult for low emissivity surfaces for several reasons. First, the high intensity light can reflect off the surface and cause “burn-in” to the camera’s detector. The “burn-in” can take time for the sensors to recover and potentially damage the detector. Secondly, the heat source after pulsing, has a transient cool down component. The cool down component can be reflected and therefore superimposed over the structure’s thermal response which can cause an error (false defect indications) in the inspection. Lastly, the heat source is spectrally broad and therefore while heating, infrared components of the heat source can produce non-uniformity in the measured temperature field. Typically for the inspection of reflective surfaces, paint or other emissivity enhancing coatings are applied before inspection. In this paper, a pulsed light emitting diodes (PLED) heat source is used. The PLED heat source is spectrally narrow, contained within the visible band, and therefore not detectable by the infrared camera. The PLED heat source is configured to reduce any transient cool down components that could produce false defect indications. The PLED thermal inspections are compared to commercially available flash thermography inspections on unpainted aluminum samples with simulated corrosion and additively manufactured Ti-6AL-4V metal specimens.

Abstract

Disorders of consciousness are neurological conditions characterized by impaired arousal and awareness of self and environment. Behavioural responses are absent or are present but fluctuate. Disorders of consciousness are commonly encountered as a consequence of both acute and chronic brain injuries, yet reliable epidemiological estimates would require inclusive, operational definitions of the concept, as well as wider knowledge dissemination among involved professionals. Whereas several manifestations have been described, including coma, vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, a comprehensive neurobiological definition for disorders of consciousness is still lacking. The scientific literature is primarily observational, and studies-specific aetiologies lead to disorders of consciousness. Despite advances in these disease-related forms, there remains uncertainty about whether disorders of consciousness are a disease-agnostic unitary entity with a common mechanism, prognosis or treatment response paradigm. Our knowledge of disorders of consciousness has also been hampered by heterogeneity of study designs, variables, and outcomes, leading to results that are not comparable for evidence synthesis. The different backgrounds of professionals caring for patients with disorders of consciousness and the different goals at different stages of care could partly explain this variability. The Prospective Studies working group of the Neurocritical Care Society Curing Coma Campaign was established to create a platform for observational studies and future clinical trials on disorders of consciousness and coma across the continuum of care. Abstract

While there is a considerable body of data regarding the sources of minerals employed in Bronze Age Egypt, the supply chains to Sudanese Lower Nubia are virtually unknown. This paper presents results of lead isotope analysis of 11 samples of kohl from C-group, Pan-grave and New Kingdom funerary contexts across the Debeira and Ashkeit areas in Sudanese Lower Nubia during the Bronze Age. The samples could be divided in two groups based on their lead isotope ratios. A comparison between the kohl samples from Sudanese Lower Nubia and galena ores from various mining sites on the Red Sea coast of Egypt indicated that some of the galena used in kohl mixtures in Sudanese Lower Nubia came from the Pharaonic mining site of Gebel el-Zeit. The second group of Nubian samples seems to have originated from an alternative galena source yet to be determined. This is the first time that kohl samples from Sudanese Lower Nubia are integrated into known northeast African networks of supply by using Lead isotope analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. Multiscale-multiphysics model for novel ceramic solid oxide fuel cell electrodes

Abstract

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology is a promising solution for the on-demand supply of electrical energy using synthetic gas or biogas (or natural gas) as input. To significantly improve on the unavoidable degradation of state-of-the-art anodes like Ni-YSZ, we elaborate on fully ceramic composite electrodes, which are based on mixed ionic and electronic conductors (MIEC) like doped ceria and perovskite (e.g., titanate) materials. To accelerate the development of these novel electrodes, a Digital Materials Design (DMD) framework for the systematic and model-based optimization of MIEC SOFC-electrodes is elaborated. In our DMD approach we combine stochastic microstructure modeling, virtual testing of 3D microstructures and a multiscale-multiphysics electrode model to explore the available design space by performing parametric studies. The multiphysics electrode model is thereby used to predict the impact of a virtual microstructure variation on the electrode performance. The model captures all the relevant physico-chemical processes involved like the transport of charge carriers in the two MIEC solid phases, transport of the gas species in the pore-phase (described by the dusty-gas model) and the reaction kinetics (calibrated to the experimental performance characterization of the cells). A special emphasize is laid to the appropriate description of the microstructure effects. Thereby, a 1D FEM continuum model implemented in Comsol Multiphysics is used to describe the electrode on a button cell level. The microstructure effects are then captured using effective transport and interface properties, determined from 3D microstructure data. The model results are validated on experimental performance characterizations of the button cells (e.g., EIS results). Abstract

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a major cause of global acquired epilepsy, results from Taenia solium larval brain infection. T. solium adult worms release large numbers of infective eggs into the environment contributing to high levels of exposure in endemic areas. This study identifies T. solium proteins in the sera of individuals with and without NCC using mass spectrometry to examine exposure in endemic regions. Forty‐seven patients (18–51 years), 24 parenchymal NCC (pNCC), 8 epilepsy of unknown aetiology, 7 glioma, 8 brain tuberculoma, and 7 healthy volunteers were studied. Trypsin digested sera were subject to liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and spectra of 375–1700 m/z matched against T. solium WormBase ParaSite database with MaxQuant software to identify T. solium proteins. Three hundred and nineteen T. solium proteins were identified in 87.5% of pNCC and 56.6% of non‐NCC subjects. Three hundred and four proteins were exclusive to pNCC sera, seven to non‐NCC sera and eight in both. Ten percent, exhibiting immune‐modulatory properties, originated from the oncosphere and cyst vesicular fluid. In conclusion, in endemic regions, T. solium proteins are detected in sera of individuals with and without pNCC. 28. Mechanical Design of the Interaction Region Dipole B1pF for Electron Ion Collider

Abstract

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), planned for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory, will consist of two intersecting beams of intense electrons and high-energy protons or heavier atomic nuclei. The collider will need many demanding components, including high field superconducting magnets for the Interaction Region (IR). It has been decided that a prototype of one such magnet, the B1pF dipole, shall be built, to validate design choices common to all Rutherford cable dipole and quadrupole IR magnets. B1pF is one of several high field magnets in the interaction region whose design is based on the 15.1 mm wide NbTi cable, a cable like the one used in the main dipole coil of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The current design is based on a single layer coil with an inner diameter of 300 mm and magnetic length of ∼3 m which generates a magnetic field at the center of the magnet of about 3.7 T at a current of ∼11 kA at design. This paper presents the mechanical design of the B1pF dipole magnet, and the R&D effort associated with the development of the prototype, including tests for successfully winding and curing coils of the needed configuration into proper structural and magnetic elements, and including a multilayer magnetic return yoke which meets field requirements while providing an initial reduced structure suitable for operational testing in an existing test facility.

34. Peritumoral Edema in Canine Extra‐Axial Brain Tumours: Effect of Steroids.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This multicenter retrospective study evaluated the effects of a time delay and steroids on the volume of peritumoral edema (VPTE) in dogs with extra‐axial brain tumours. The hypothesis is that VPTE will decrease between the diagnostic (MRI‐1) and RT planning (MRI‐2) MRIs following the administration of steroids. Inclusion required paired MRI acquisitions within 3 months, with VPTE contouring for each MRI registered to the RT planning CT. No edema was defined as < 0.2 cm3, increased edema was > 30% VPTE increase and decreased edema was > 30% VPTE decrease. Forty‐four dogs of which 34 (77%) received steroids between MRIs were included. The median time between the MRIs was 22 days (range: 8–74 days). Nine (20%) had no edema on both MRIs. The median MRI‐1/VPTE: 0.83 cm3 (IQR: 0.15–2.06 cm3) and median MRI‐2/VPTE: 0.40 cm3 (IQR: 0.06–1.12 cm3) were significantly different (p = 0.048). Compared to MRI‐1/VPTE: 17 (39%) VPTE decreased, eight were stable and 10 increased. The median VPTE difference was −21%, range: −100 to +6287. With steroids, VPTE decreased in 15/34 (44%) and increasedin 6/34 (18%) (median VPTE diff: −60%) compared to no steroids (median VPTE diff: +25%). Steroids use was associated with change in VPTE (p = 0.009). Two dogs had clinical deterioration and were on steroids with documented VPTE increase (+86% and +1880%) without tumour progression. The change in VPTE is highly variable but reduction is associated with steroids. Notably, subjective improvement of clinical signs can be seen without significant decrease to the VPTE on imaging.
