This research aimed to: a) synthesize the Science, Technology, and Society Phenomenon-based Learning Model (STS-PhBL) for teaching Geoharzard to students; and b) compare students' problem-solving skills prior to and after the STS-PhBL lessons on the Geoharzard topic. The sample consisted of 39 Grade 12 students enrolled in the first semester of the 2021 academic year at one secondary school in Surin Province, Thailand. The data collection methods included the panel of experts' evaluation of STS-PhBL lesson plans and the Problem-Solving Skills Test. The Index of Item-Objective-Congruence (IOC) of STS-PhBL lesson plans on Geoharzard was calculated. Also, the students' problem-solving skills prior to and after the STS-PhBL lessons in the Geoharzard topic were analyzed by using the paired-samples t-test. The researchers synthesized a new STS-PhBL model from the intensive literature review, consisting of seven teaching steps: a) stimulate the phenomenon; b) identify problems in the phenomenon; c) explore the answer to the targeted problem; d) construct new knowledge; e) reflect on learning; f) exchange and share learning; and g) apply knowledge. The STS-PhBL lesson plans on Geoharzard met the IOC requirements. After learning STS-PhBL lessons, the students significantly improved their problemsolving skills at the 0.05 statistically significant level.

We use novel information about fixture-specific water lead levels (WLLs) in Portland, Oregon schools to explore inequalities in students' potential for exposure to lead in drinking water at school. We find that Black and Hispanic students were in classrooms with higher WLLs than white students primarily because they attended different schools. The elevated exposure of students with non-English first languages was also largely driven by sorting into different schools, although there were marginally significant differences between students within the same school. Our findings underscore the importance of broadly targeted remediation efforts like those implemented in Portland to address environmental injustices.

The American Chemical Society advocates a shift from rule-based to risk-based safety education for chemistry graduates, emphasizing meaningful student engagement in the risk assessment process for laboratory work. To implement this paradigm shift, we introduced RAMP (Recognize Hazards, Assess Risk, Minimize Risk, and Prevent Emergencies)-based safety instruction, fostering interactive and constructive student engagement, within an undergraduate organic chemistry lab course. We evaluated the impact of this RAMP-based safety education through prepost treatment quizzes and semistructured interviews. Students received training on RAMP principles and conducted risk assessments using an adapted Job Hazard Analysis format for their prelab quiz for each experiment throughout the semester. Our quantitative analysis of the pre- and post-treatment quizzes revealed statistically significant differences, with the experimental group showing improved cognitive outcomes, compared to the control group. Additionally, analysis of the semistructured interviews conducted to explore student perspectives on the RAMP-based safety instruction revealed the positive effects of the RAMP-based safety instruction on students' learning, supported by the quantitative findings. Students exhibited increased cognitive and behavioral engagement, reflecting the potential benefits of this approach.

Conducting K-12 outreach programs on university or college campuses focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines is an essential part of the multifaceted effort for preparing future generations of engineers and scientists. However, the lack of structured frameworks to design and deliver activities and programs that maximize potential impacts poses a challenge. This case study contributes to filling this gap by presenting a six-step adaptable pedagogical framework whose intent is to provide meaningful structure for on-campus STEM outreach activities that emphasize collaborative, hands-on learning experiences for pre-college students. Successful implementation of the framework is demonstrated through the design of a civil engineering workshop on sustainable and hazard-resistant earth masonry, and its evaluation through the analysis of the feedback of 85 participants from three summer workshops for high school students between 2017 and 2019.

Purpose: Despite hazardous consequences, the use of fertilizers and pesticides has been exceptionally high, mainly to increase crop yield. Socio-economic factors have been explored to understand the inability to curb its overuse; however, literature on psychological factors affecting farmers' decision-making is very scarce. Psychological factors are important to understand as these factors mediate the effects of external socio-economic factors on one's behaviour. The present study focused on farmers' intentions to convert their farming practices from conventional to organic. Design/methodology/approach: The data was collected from 389 participants, mainly using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The observations were analysed through regression and structural equation modelling. Findings: A significant association has been observed between attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, awareness and farmers' intention to switch to organic farming practices. Practical implications: As the observed factors are significantly associated with conversion intentions and malleable by nature, the study serves as a confirmatory node to proceed with the interventional plan based on the belief system restructuring module to educate farmers about sustainable farming practices. Theoretical implications: The study verified the applicability of the theory of planned behaviour in the Indian context and highlighted the factors to be targeted to convert the intentions of conventional farmers to organic farming. Originality/value: In order to curb the overuse of chemicals in agriculture, policymakers can plan suitable interventions and use the relevant psychological measures to target the factors identified in the present study.

Within the scope of the current study, the researchers developed activities for middle school students to raise their awareness on the harm of plastics and microplastics, which are detrimental to nature and living things. In addition, through the activities developed, the study aimed to provide students with knowledge of and experience with bioplastics, which have emerged as an alternative to plastic materials and are environmentally friendly. Twelve eighth grade students participated in the current study. The activities developed by the researchers within the framework of the REACT strategy covered a four-week period. The researchers made sure that the activities designed included each step of the REACT strategy (Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating, Transferring) and the researchers used different tools (mind map, concept map, Vee diagram). The study suggests that activities designed for classroom use should be integrated with tools such as Vee diagram, concept map and mind map in order to increase students' knowledge and awareness about global environmental problems as well as support students' ability to produce solutions to such problems.

The discovery of frog abnormalities by students on a school field trip in 1995 sparked hundreds of scientific studies in search of the cause of abnormality. This Socio-Scientific Issue has been used as an inquiry-based learning exercise for training in the practice of science, but it is also well-suited to teaching the nature of science. Our goal here is to provide an integrative resource for biology and environmental educators to integrate the nature of science into their course context. We introduce frog abnormalities in the context of a socio-scientific issue for teaching the nature of science, review the frog abnormality phenomenon, suggest appropriate educational methods for this SSI, and offer ideas for non-science educators to connect to the sciences.

A material commonly known as Flubber, with properties that are excellent for teaching about glaciers, has been widely used in geosciences education. Yet, the original recipe contains borax, which has health risks that should be avoided. A new recipe is shared containing low-cost, readily available ingredients that produces a reformulated Flubber with properties similar to the original without the associated health risks.

Chromium (Cr) toxicity, even at low concentrations, poses a significant health threat to various environmental species. Cr is found in the environment in two oxidation states that differ in their bioavailability and toxicity. While Cr(III) is essential for glucose metabolism, the oxyanion chromate Cr(VI) is mostly of anthropogenic origin, toxic, and carcinogenic. The sources of Cr in the environment are multiple, including geochemical processes, disposal of industrial waste, and industrial wastewater. Cr pollution may consequently impact the health of numerous plant and animal species. Despite that, the number of published studies on Cr toxicity across environmental species remained mainly unchanged over the past two decades. The presence of Cr in the environment affects several plant physiological processes, including germination or photosynthesis, and consequently impacts growth, and lowers agricultural production and quality. Recent research has also reported the toxic effects of Cr in different aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Whereas some species showed sensitivity, others exhibited tolerance. Hence, this review discusses the understanding of the ecotoxicological effect of Cr on different plant and animal groups and serves as a concise source of consolidated information and a valuable reference for researchers and policymakers in an understanding of Cr toxicity. To address the parameter instability issues in hazardous materials handling during multi-machine loading and unloading operations, we propose a Full-Scale Smart Parameter Optimization Control (FSPOC) system specifically designed for multi-machine coordination. This system leverages a novel fish scale prediction algorithm tailored for cooperative multi-machine environments. Initially, the fish scale prediction algorithm, inspired by bionic fish scales, is developed to predict future system behavior by analyzing historical data. Building on this algorithm, we introduce a disturbance cancellation control theorem and design a parameter optimization controller to enhance stability in high-dimensional nonlinear spaces. The FSPOC method is then applied to a multi-machine cooperative system, enabling online distributed parameter optimization for complex systems with multiple degrees of freedom. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated through simulations, where it was compared with two other optimization techniques: Genetic Algorithm-based PID (GAPID) and Chaotic Atomic Search Algorithm-based PID (CHASO). With the rapid expansion of global trade, the complexity and diversification of supply chains have become increasingly significant. In particular, the supply chain for hazardous materials, involving chemicals and explosives, requires stringent regulation. Managing the flow of these high-risk goods necessitates a reliable access control system to ensure safety and compliance. Traditional supply chain management systems often rely on centralized databases and record-keeping systems, which are prone to tampering and single points of failure, making them inadequate for current high-security demands. This paper combines blockchain technology with a hazardous materials supply chain model. In the blockchain network, our innovation lies in the introduction of a transaction coordinator to create transaction sets for each supply chain entity along with smart contracts to implement access control for these transaction sets. We also propose a new hazardous materials supply chain model architecture and conduct experimental verification using simulated hazardous materials supply chain data. Our experimental results show that the proposed method performs excellently in throughput and latency tests, demonstrating the potential to enhance the efficiency and security of supply chain management. Arsenic is a trace element and a metalloid which is prominently known as an environmental hazard. At present, rising health apprehensions are linked to emanating from a wide array of industrial, chemical, residential, agricultural, and technological sources, leading to extensive pollution of water, soil, and air ecosystems including flora, fauna and humans. It poses significant harm to biological organisms upon acute and chronic exposure. In this review, we delve into the reported experimental data that elaborates on arsenic as a toxicant, with particular emphasis on its occurrence, metabolism and diverse molecular mechanisms involved. It also includes the major molecular mechanisms leading to systemic toxicity with special emphasis on shedding light on the intricate ways it disrupts the nervous system.

In recent years, various kinds of civil explosive detonation accidents have occurred frequently around the world, resulting in substantial human casualties and significant property losses. It is generally believed that thermal stimulation plays a critical role in triggering the detonation of explosives; consequently, the study of the thermal hazards of explosives is of great significance to many aspects of safety emergency management practices in the production, transportation, storage, and use of explosives. It is known that the thermal stability of the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system and the ammonium nitrate-aluminium system has been extensively investigated previously in the literature. However, there is a paucity of research on the thermal hazard characteristics of non-ideal explosives under varying oxygen balance conditions within the academic sphere. Therefore, this research focused on the study of the thermal hazards of non-ideal explosives based on thermokinetic analysis. The thermal hazards of non-ideal explosive mixtures of ammonium perchlorate and aluminium and of ammonium nitrate and aluminium were studied by thermal analysis kinetics. The thermokinetic parameters were meticulously studied through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The results showed that the peak reaction temperature and activation energy of the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system were significantly higher than those of the ammonium nitrate-aluminium system. Under the condition of zero oxygen balance, the peak reaction temperature of the ammonium nitrate-aluminium system was 259 °C (heating rate 5 °C/min), and the activation energy was 84.7 kJ/mol. Under the same conditions, the peak reaction temperature and activation energy of the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system were 292 °C (heating rate 5 °C/min) and 94.9 kJ/mol, respectively. These results indicate that the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system has higher safety under the same thermal stimulation conditions. Furthermore, research on both non-ideal explosive systems reveals that the activation energy is at its peak under negative oxygen balance conditions, recorded at 104.2 kJ/mol (ammonium perchlorate-aluminium) and 86.2 kJ/mol (ammonium nitrate-aluminium), which indicates a higher degree of safety. Therefore, the investigation into the thermal hazards of non-ideal explosive systems under different oxygen balance conditions is of utmost importance for the enhancement and improvement of safety emergency management practices. Mining operations have been a significant source of environmental pollution due to their excessive water usage during ore processing and the subsequent discharge of tailings into the environment. It is imperative to assess the extent of toxic metal release resulting from these activities at any given time. In this investigation, we explore the environmental risks and the release patterns of zinc (Zn) from zinc leach residues (ZLRs) originating from the Angoran mine in the Zanjan province of Iran. A series of batch experiments were conducted on two distinct ZLR samples (S1 and S2) to analyze the influence of factors such as particle size, contact duration, liquid-to-solid ratio, and pH of the leach solution on the leaching behavior of Zn. The primary constituents in the ZLR samples were found to be SiO2 and CaSO4. It was observed that the release of Zn was contingent on pH, with increased acidity leading to higher Zn release. Even after 360 min of contact, equilibrium was not achieved, and the release exhibited an upward trajectory. Heterogeneous behavior was noted in the particle size distribution, with the greatest Zn release observed in particles within the 0.3–0.5 mm size range. The solubility of Zn was identified as the dominant factor influencing its release from the residues, raising environmental concerns as a significant portion of Zn is present in a soluble fraction. Based on the mobility index and leaching limits defined in Decision 2003/33/EC, the tested ZLR samples were classified as highly hazardous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This contribution aims at systematically determining the extent of classified areas in two-phase releases of pure components. To this end, a novel algorithm is proposed to ensure all proper steps are taken toward accurately computing the required properties of the resulting cloud. The intended framework is based on a refined one-dimensional dispersion model that accommodates (1) the influence of the vapor component on the energy balance of the two-phase jet model; (2) new decay constants to calculate velocity, concentration, and temperature profiles; (3) a new normalization ratio to compute the temperature along the centerline; and (4) a new correlation for the entrainment coefficient in the two-phase region. It was found that the entrainment coefficient ( α 1 ) correlates linearly with the orifice Reynolds number ( R e e ), with a coefficient of determination R 2 > 0.98 . Altogether, these modifications produced results that are in very good agreement with (scarce) experimental data available in the literature. The calculated release rates were only (on average) 9% off from measured data. The temperature profiles at the centerline compared well with the experimental data, with very small relative squared error R S E < 0.10 . The hope is that this simple algorithm can predict within reasonable precision the reach of the hazardous cloud in open field situations. The problem of lot sizing and vehicle routing are combined to form the production routing problem. The efficiency of this combination in cutting expenses has been studied in the past. To reduce the risk associated with the manufacturing and distribution of hazardous products, the production routing problem is examined in this study. Researchers are paying more attention to sustainability's social and environmental aspects. Hazardous materials are bad for the environment and human health. Mishaps using these substances frequently have unfavorable long-term effects. Risk is a criterion for measuring hazards in activities involving these materials. A mixed integer program is used to simulate the problem. The suggested model's nonlinear risk function is dependent on the machine's load, population risk, and hazardous substance. A piecewise linear function approximates this function since solving the mathematical model with the nonlinear objective function is more difficult. Several cases were utilized in this study to assess the model, solve it, and contrast the two linear and nonlinear models. The outcomes demonstrate that the approximation model may obtain a more accurate result simultaneously. The impact of alterations to warehousing and production capacity on risk has also been examined through sensitivity analysis. Using a nonlinear mathematical model, this study suggested a production routing problem for hazardous materials based on sustainability requirements and solved the model using a piecewise linear approximation. These tailings are typically stored in a dam structure called a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). The planning and construction of a TSF are critical considerations, as the failure of a TSF can have substantial environmental impacts, pose risks to human safety, and result in industrial losses. Therefore, strict control is necessary in the development of TSFs to minimize the potential negative consequences. This research focuses on the transport of contaminants within a TSF, specifically examining the concentration of chloride contaminants and conducting particle movement analysis. The study utilizes modeling through the GeoStudio SEEP/W program to simulate groundwater flow profiles and the GeoStudio CTRAN/W program to understand contaminant movement over a 100-year period. GeoStudio modeling employs 10 materials: impermeable clay soil, filter sandy soil, transition gravel rock, three mine waste types (Fine, Rockfill, and Rockfill with fine), hard rock bedrock layer, in-situ soil representing the original layer, landslide with colluvial soil, and the tailings itself. Back analysis is employed to iterate model parameters and ensure modeling accuracy against field data, including comparisons with water quality test results and readings from vibrating wire piezometer (VWP) instrumentation. The contaminant transport is influenced by advection-dispersion processes and tends to concentrate within the TSF boundary toward the dam toe over a 100-year timeframe. The analysis emphasizes the influence of advection in contaminant transport and underscores the importance of particle position relative to the groundwater level, with Particle Tracking Analysis shows significant movement within the groundwater flow area. This research provides crucial insights into the dynamics of contaminant concentration, informing better decision-making in TSF planning and management. The findings underscore the imperative of strict control measures to minimize environmental impacts and human safety risks associated with TSFs, thereby advancing knowledge in gold mining waste management. Heavy metals (HMs) like Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, and Hg, among others, play a role in several environmental problems. The marine environment is polluted by several contaminants, such as HMs. A variety of physico-chemical methods usually available for sanitation HMs remediation suffer from either limitation. Bioremediation is a promising way of dealing with HMs pollution. Microbes have the ability with various potencies to resist HMs tension. The current review discusses the main sources and influences of HMs, the role of marine microorganisms in HMs bioremediation, as well as the microbial mechanisms for HMs detoxification and transformation. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the bioremediation technologies that are currently available for the removal of HMs ions from industrial and urban effluent by aquatic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and microalgae, particularly those that are isolated from marine areas. The primary goals are to outline various studies and offer helpful information about the most important aspects of the bioelimination techniques. The biotreatment practices have been primarily divided into three techniques based on this topic. They are biosorption, bioaccumulation, bioleaching, and biotransformation. This article gives the brief view on the research studies about bioremediation of HMs using marine microorganisms. Integrating both proactive and reactive risk-mitigation mechanisms, this research constructs a bi-level network design problem for hazardous materials (hazmats) to regulate the carriers' use of roads, such that the environmental impact is minimized. In more detail, by embedding the emergency response time into the risk assessment, the locations of hazmat response teams are determined along with toll schemes, road closures, and new road constructions. The uncertainties of demand, including differences in the number of shipments, origin/destination changes, and amount variations, are also taken into account by applying a scenario-based approach. The proposed bi-level model is first solved optimally by a single-level reformulation, and then by a three-stage heuristic method for larger instances. Through numerical experiments on a real-world road network in Nanchang, a city in China, a set of management insights are derived to facilitate policy-making in regulating hazmat transportation. The growing energy crises and accumulating organics in water have caused significant threats to the economy and environment in the current time. To minimize the impact of these problem, here we established a 2D/2D interaction between MoS 2 and g-C 3 N 4 through simple hydrothermal and calcination processes and was further loaded with Au nanoparticles. The visible light driven photocatalysis was arrived by splitting water and degrading hazardous pollutant in wastewater. The large surface to surface interaction exceedingly increased the charge transfer and separation for highly speedy photocatalysis. About 220 μmol H 2 was available from 2Au/9MS/CN nanocomposite in 1 h which was 24.44 times higher than the amount available from bare g-C 3 N 4. Further, all the photocatalysts delivered acceptable eradication activity for 2-chlorphenol and 68% pollutant was removed in 1 h. The highly accelerated photocatalysis with 2Au/9MS/CN nanocomposite is related to the extended visible light purchasing due to the surface plasmon resonance of the Au metal and enhanced charge separation arrived from the well-established 2D/2D heterojunction. We hope that this work will attract major attention of the researchers towards the preparation of dimension-matched 2D/2D heterojunctional nanocomposites for energy production and eradication of organics from water. This paper presents a real-world liquid fuel distribution problem involving a heterogeneous fleet of multi-compartment vehicles servicing a set of orders of different fuels. Two new features are introduced that affect significantly the performance of the fuel distribution process in terms of safety and efficiency: (i) loading trucks so that the payload remains balanced throughout each phase of a delivery route, and (ii) sequencing the requests for loading trucks at the depot loading facilities. A Mixed Integer Programming formulation is presented and an Adaptive Large Neighbourhood Search algorithm with various novel features is developed and benchmarked. A new loading model is formed and solved for allocating the ordered items (fuel) to vehicle compartments, as part of constructing/repairing delivery routes. The computational performance of the proposed solution approach has been tested on a series of benchmark problems. Moreover, a series of experiments were performed in order to assess the effect of the balanced loading constraints on the traveled distance. The results indicate that the effect of this type of constraint on the total traveled distance is kept at a reasonable level, reaching a maximum increase of 4.37%. The computational tools presented in this work may accommodate the dispatchers' work in producing efficient and safe delivery routes while managing efficiently any potential bottleneck in the truck loading facilities. It is generally believed that thermal stimulation plays a critical role in triggering the detonation of explosives; consequently, the study of the thermal hazards of explosives is of great significance to many aspects of safety emergency management practices in the production, transportation, storage, and use of explosives. It is known that the thermal stability of the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system and the ammonium nitrate-aluminium system has been extensively investigated previously in the literature. However, there is a paucity of research on the thermal hazard characteristics of non-ideal explosives under varying oxygen balance conditions within the academic sphere. Therefore, this research focused on the study of the thermal hazards of non-ideal explosives based on thermokinetic analysis. The thermal hazards of non-ideal explosive mixtures of ammonium perchlorate and aluminium and of ammonium nitrate and aluminium were studied by thermal analysis kinetics. The thermokinetic parameters were meticulously studied through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The results showed that the peak reaction temperature and activation energy of the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system were significantly higher than those of the ammonium nitrate-aluminium system. Under the condition of zero oxygen balance, the peak reaction temperature of the ammonium nitrate-aluminium system was 259 °C (heating rate 5 °C/min), and the activation energy was 84.7 kJ/mol. Under the same conditions, the peak reaction temperature and activation energy of the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system were 292 °C (heating rate 5 °C/min) and 94.9 kJ/mol, respectively. These results indicate that the ammonium perchlorate-aluminium system has higher safety under the same thermal stimulation conditions. Furthermore, research on both non-ideal explosive systems reveals that the activation energy is at its peak under negative oxygen balance conditions, recorded at 104.2 kJ/mol (ammonium perchlorate-aluminium) and 86.2 kJ/mol (ammonium nitrate-aluminium), which indicates a higher degree of safety. Therefore, the investigation into the thermal hazards of non-ideal explosive systems under different oxygen balance conditions is of utmost importance for the enhancement and improvement of safety emergency management practices.

This review highlights the intricate relationship between viral diseases and environmental factors, emphasizing how human activities and viral disease progression influence each other. The findings underscore the need for integrated approaches to address the environmental determinants of viral diseases and mitigate their impacts on both health and ecosystems. The rapid expansion of pipelines during the U.S. shale oil and gas boom drew attention to the economic consequences of pipeline incidents. This study investigates the impacts of 426 gas distribution pipeline incidents on property values in the United States between 2010 and 2020. We find that only incidents that are both severe (involving explosion, ignition, or fatalities) and occurred on above-ground pipelines, which we define as high-profile incidents, have adverse effects on nearby property values, while other incidents have no measurable housing price effect. A difference-in-differences analysis finds that high-profile incidents significantly decrease property values within 1000 m by 8.2%, and the negative impact can persist for about eight years on average. Furthermore, we find a drop in transaction volume that lasts a short period after the incidents, suggesting an initial demand-side response. In contrast to the strong effects of pipeline incidents, we do not find statistically significant price effects from pipeline installation. We also demonstrate that there is substantial heterogeneity by the type of incident and that results based on studies of individual incidents should be generalized with caution. However, visualizing these agents on contaminated surfaces provides a straightforward way of identifying and responding to noxious threats. This article comprehensively reviews advancements in NA sensor technologies and developments in detection methods with focus on the emergence of innovative sprayable sensors and provides an overview of advanced chemosensors tailored for sprayable applications. The utilizable compounds are classified as polymers, enzymes, organic or inorganic dyes, or nanoparticles. These chemosensors provide unparalleled convenience and versatility and overcome the limitations of traditional instruments. The applicability of current state-of-the-art chemosensors as sprayable sensors is assessed and discussed, and the importance of these innovative technologies in terms of improving human and animal safety and detoxification is emphasized. Water sources have become extremely scarce and contaminated by organic and inorganic industrial and agricultural pollutants as well as household wastes. Poisoning water resources by dyes and metals is a problem because contaminated water can leak into subsurface and surface sources, causing serious contamination and health problems. Therefore, developing wastewater treatment technologies is valuable. Today, hydrogels have attracted considerable attention owing to their broad applications. Hydrogels are polymeric network compositions with significant water-imbibing capacity. Hydrogels have potential applications in diverse fields such as biomedical, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biosensors. They can be prepared by using natural (biopolymers) and synthetic polymers. Synthetic polymer-based hydrogels obtained from petrochemicals are not environmentally benign; thus, abundant plant-based polysaccharides are found as more suitable compounds for making biodegradable hydrogels. Polysaccharides with many advantages such as non-toxicity, biodegradability, availability, inexpensiveness, etc. are widely employed for the preparation of environmentally friendly hydrogels. Polysaccharides-based hydrogels containing chitin, chitosan, gum, starch (St), etc. are employed to remove pollutants, metals, and dyes. Among these, St has attracted a lot of attention. St can be mixed with other compounds to make hydrogels, which remove dyes and metal ions to variable degrees of efficiency. Although St has numerous advantages, it suffers from drawbacks such as low stability, low water solubility, and fast degradability in water which limit its application as an environmental adsorbent. As an effective way to overcome these weaknesses, various modification approaches to form starch-based hydrogels (SBHs) employing different compounds have been reported. Saint Martin Island (SMI), the only coral island in Bangladesh, is located in the Bay of Bengal and has been identified as a marine protected area (MPA). Littering cigarette butts (CBs) waste in an ecologically sensitive environment can have numerous adverse effects. The purpose of this research is to investigate the abundance and density of CBs in SMI and to assess the pollution status using the Cigarette Butt Pollution Index (CBPI). This study is conducted based on the visual survey method in the three types of land use zones of SMI. During the peak season, the investigation was carried out from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in December 2023. A total of 4481 CBs item were counted, and the density ranged from 0.37 to 1.76 m−2 with an average value of 0.99 m−2 across 12 sampling campaigns. The highest density was observed at service zones, and the fishing zones had the lowest density. The calculated CBPI values revealed that 75 % of the sampling stations were in the " severe pollution" while 25 % were classified as "high pollution" status, underscoring the prevalence of hazardous CBs across most areas of SMI. To tackle these issues requires regulatory measures, public awareness initiatives, and community involvement. Effective waste management and eco-friendly product promotion can help reduce CBs pollution risks in marine protected islands. The study aims to fabricate mesoporous TiO 2 nanofibers (NFs) with different thallium (Tl) doping ratios (1–2 wt%) using the solution electrospinning method and examine their photocatalytic oxidation activity in the desulfurization of commercial diesel fuel. The results show that the Tl doping restricted the transition of the anatase to rutile fraction, shifting it from an initial composition of 58.3% rutile and 41.7% anatase to a significantly altered state with only 2.4% rutile and 97.6% anatase. Additionally, Tl-doping resulted in a decrease in crystalline size (from 55.4 to 9.5 nm), a reduction in the band gap from 3.2 to 2.93 eV, and a decrease in the diameter of the nanofibers from 200 nm to 100 nm, compared to pristine TiO 2 NFs. The most efficient photocatalyst, 1 wt% Tl-doped TiO 2 NFs, demonstrated remarkable performance with 98.74% sulphur removal under Xenon lamp irradiation (450 nm, 500 Watts) for 90 min. Under sunlight, the photocatalytic oxidation activity in the desulfurization process resulted in a remarkable reduction of 99.2% in sulphur content, decreasing from 11500 ppm to 98 ppm. Notably, this photocatalyst demonstrated efficient oxidative photocatalytic desulfurization and maintained the recyclability of the solvent over eight cycles without any loss. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the most complex and valuable component of electronic devices, but only 34% of them are recycled in an environmentally sound manner. Improving the recycling rate and efficiency requires a fast, reliable and uncostly analytical method. Although the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) shows high potential, it is often unreliable. In this study, we propose a novel XRF methodology for the elemental analysis of PCBs, using the certified reference material (CRM) to decrease uncertainty and enhance accuracy. The results show significant improvement in robustness and accuracy of portable XRF(pXRF) analyses for elements Cu, Pb, Ni, As and Au, with a relative average inaccuracy of approximately 5% compared to referenced values. The methodology validation carried out by comparing pXRF and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy analyses of personal computer motherboard samples shows no statistically significant difference for elements Cu, Cr and Ag.
