Abstract Transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation is one of the most efficient methods for the preparation of chiral α-substituted propionic acids. However, research on this method, employing cleaner earth-abundant metal catalysts, is still insufficient in both academic and industrial contexts. Herein, we report an efficient nickel-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of α-substituted acrylic acids affording the corresponding chiral α-substituted propionic acids with up to 99.4% ee (enantiomeric excess) and 10,000 S/C (substrate/catalyst). In particular, this method can be used to obtain (R)-dihydroartemisinic acid with 99.8:0.2 dr (diastereomeric ratio) and 5000 S/C, which is an essential intermediate for the preparation of the antimalarial drug Artemisinin. The reaction mechanism has been investigated via experiments and DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations, which indicate that the protonolysis of the C-Ni bond of the key intermediate via an intramolecular proton transfer from the carboxylic acid group of the substrate, is the rate-determining step.

BackgroundDepression is becoming a common threat to the mental health of Chinese adolescents. As an intermediate stage between being healthy and having depression, identifying factors influencing depressive may contribute to providing more options for the prevention and treatment of depression.ObjectiveThe study aims to explore the effects of physical activity on adolescent depression, focusing on the times and hours of activity per week.MethodsThe study used a cross-sectional dataset collected in Ruyang County, Henan Province in September 2022, including a sample of 5,629 adolescents in 31 compulsory public schools in the county. We utilized Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) to analyze the impact of physical activity on adolescents’ depression scores, and probit model to analyze the influence of physical activity on adolescents’ depression. To examine whether there is a U-shaped relationship between physical activity and depression, we included the squared terms of times and hours of activity in models.ResultsThe results showed that: (1) The times of physical activity significantly reduces Chinese adolescent depression. Fishmeal is an important protein source in aquafeed. However, due to the limited natural resources, fishmeal is in short supply, resulting in a price surge for fishmeal. Here, we reported a kind of Chinese medicine residue, endothelium corneum gigeriae galli residue (ECGGR), as a fishmeal substitute in the diets of Trachinotus ovatus. Six isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated, substituting fishmeal at 0%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 18.75%, 25%, and 31.25%. There was no significant difference in the growth performance when the fishmeal substitution level was no more than 25%. The smallest FCR was obtained at the 18.75% substitution level. Furthermore, substituting ECGGR for fishmeal had no effect on whole-body and muscle proximate compositions, except when the replacement level exceeded 25%, which led to a decrease in whole-body moisture and an increase in whole-body crude protein. The contents of Gly, Cys, Ile, Tyr, Pro, and EAAs/TAAs were altered as the substitution level varied. However, dietary replacement of fishmeal with ECGGR did not degrade muscle protein quality, according to a nutritional evaluation of muscle essential amino acid composition. In terms of hepatic antioxidant capacity, neither the overall antioxidant status nor the expression of genes in the Nrf2-ARE pathway was altered by dietary ECGGR. Moreover, the expressions of p65, TNF-α, and IL-8 in the intestine were upregulated at the 31.25% substitution level. Also, more goblet cells were observed in the intestine at substitution levels of 25% and 31.25%. In conclusion, ECGGR can substitute for fishmeal at the optimal level of 18.75% without adversely affecting the growth performance, protein quality, or hepatic and intestinal health of golden pompano.

This paper investigates a method for improving the selection of seismic motions for designing earthquake-resistant underground structures. It is found that PGV alone is unreliable as a predictor of structural damage with increasing earthquake intensity. Therefore, based on characterizing seismic intensity by using PGV, another parameter, referred to here as “the severest parameter”, is introduced to distinguish potential damage capacity for different seismic motions. A numerical model of a soil–underground structure system was established using the finite element software OpenSees. A total of 120 real ground motions were selected for the model, considering the influences of eight different site groups on the underground station and the rupture distances of the input seismic motions. The results show that as seismic intensity increases, substantial variability in the response of underground structures emerges under the same amplitude of PGV, diminishing the effectiveness of the relationship between PGV and structural damage. When assessing the potential damage capacity of seismic motions with similar or close amplitudes of PGV, VSI is an appropriate severest parameter for Class III sites and ASI is suitable for Class II sites. When the correlation coefficient between the severest parameter and the structural response is greater than 0.8, it can be used to reliably assess seismic damage capacity based on the size of the severest parameter.
