Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have been widely introduced outside of their natural range and are one of the World’s most invasive species. Illegally introduced into the isolated, high-altitude (4520 m) Chungará catchment of northern Chile, rainbow trout have now been present in the system for ∼30 years and to our knowledge are the World’s highest known self-sustaining population. However, nothing is known about the status and impacts of these trout in the system. We analysed stomach contents and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) from liver and muscle to study the trophic ecology of rainbow trout from lake, river mouth and riverine habitats in the Chungará catchment to understand their basic ecology and to characterise their potential trophic interactions with native taxa. Both stomach contents and stable isotope values showed spatial differences in diet and habitat use, but also revealed that diet varied temporally within habitats. The trophic position of rainbow trout was similar in the three habitats examined and was constant over time, apart from the riverine population. Predation by rainbow trout had different potential effects across pelagic, benthic, and riverine habitats in the Chungará catchment, through the consumption of zooplankton, native amphipods, aquatic insects, and the endemic cypriniodontid fish Orestias chungarensis.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) represent a class of small particles typically with diameters ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers. These nanoparticles are composed of magnetic materials such as iron, cobalt, nickel, or their alloys. The nanoscale size of MNPs gives them unique physicochemical (physical and chemical) properties not found in their bulk counterparts. Their versatile nature and unique magnetic behavior make them valuable in a wide range of scientific, medical, and technological fields. Over the past decade, there has been a significant surge in MNP-based applications spanning biomedical uses, environmental remediation, data storage, energy storage, and catalysis. Given their magnetic nature and small size, MNPs can be manipulated and guided using external magnetic fields. This characteristic is harnessed in biomedical applications, where these nanoparticles can be directed to specific targets in the body for imaging, drug delivery, or hyperthermia treatment. Herein, this roadmap offers an overview of the current status, challenges, and advancements in various facets of MNPs. It covers magnetic properties, synthesis, functionalization, characterization, and biomedical applications such as sample enrichment, bioassays, imaging, hyperthermia, neuromodulation, tissue engineering, and drug/gene delivery. However, as MNPs are increasingly explored for in vivo applications, concerns have emerged regarding their cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, and degradation, prompting attention from both researchers and clinicians. Introduction: Surgery is a cost-effective public health intervention. Access to safe surgery is a basic human right. However, there are still significant disparities in the access to and safety of surgical and anaesthesia care between low-income and middle-income countries and high-income countries. The Latin American Surgical Outcomes Study in Paediatrics (LASOS-Peds) is an international, observational, 14-day cohort study to investigate the incidence of 30-day in-hospital complications following elective or emergency paediatric surgery in Latin American countries., Methods and Analysis: LASOS-Peds is a prospective, international, multicentre observational study of paediatric patients undergoing both elective and non-elective surgeries and procedures, inpatient and outpatient, including those performed outside the operating room. The primary outcome is the incidence of in-hospital postoperative complications up to 30 days after surgery. An important host defence mechanism against pathogens is intracellular killing, which is achieved through phagocytosis, a cellular process for engulfing and neutralizing extracellular particles. Phagocytosis results in the formation of matured phagolysosomes, which are specialized compartments that provide a hostile environment and are considered the end point of the degradative pathway. However, all fungal pathogens studied to date have developed strategies to manipulate phagosomal function directly and also indirectly by redirecting phagosomes from the degradative pathway to a non-degradative pathway with the expulsion and even transfer of pathogens between cells. Here, using the major human fungal pathogens Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum as examples, we discuss the processes involved in host phagosome-fungal pathogen interactions, with a focus on fungal evasion strategies. Introduction: Background and objective: endometriosis is a hormone-dependent disorder characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue in extrauterine sites, which can trigger a chronic inflammatory reaction. This disease mainly affects women of childbearing age and can have a negative impact on their physical, mental and social well-being. There are eating patterns considered as anti-inflammatory, such as the Mediterranean diet, which could help in the prevention and treatment of endometriosis. The objective of this review was to know the relationship between the consumption of different food groups and the prevention of endometriosis. Materials and methods: a systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA methodology. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases were consulted. Studies published between 2013 and 2023 were selected, accessible in full text, written in English and Spanish and including a sample of women with endometriosis and/or healthy women, in addition to evaluating the relationship between diet and endometriosis. Unrelated articles, systematic reviews or meta-analyses, pilot studies and studies conducted in animals were excluded. Results: a total of ten studies were included. The consumption of fruits, vegetables (not cruciferous), dairy products, fish, potatoes, legumes, vitamins (A, C, D and B12), monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and minerals (calcium, potassium and magnesium) seems to reduce the risk of endometriosis. Conclusions: further studies investigating the relationship between consumption of different food groups and risk of endometriosis are needed.

Background: Primary care providers (PCPs) are relevant stakeholders for primary care research (PCR)., Objective: We report the perceived importance and interest in PCR of a national sample of Chilean PCPs., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study targeting Chilean PCPs. An electronic survey assessing perceived relevance of PCR, research training and experience, training interests, and demographics was disseminated through emails and WhatsApp messages. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data. Logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted probabilities and 95% confidence intervals for high interest in PCR, high interest in using research methods, and high interest in receiving research training, and predictors of these outcomes., Results: A total of 387 providers completed the online survey. Only 26.4% of PCPs had research experience as a principal or co-investigator. However, most clinicians perceived PCR as very important (92.5%) and were interested in using research methods (90.7%) and receiving training (94.3%). There were no statistically significant differences in these perceptions between provider's discipline, role, sex, age, and geographical location after adjusting for covariates., Conclusions: Despite few Chilean PCPs have research training, a large majority perceive it as important, are interested in using it in their practice and would like to receive training., (© The Author(s) 2023. Leishmania ( Viannia ) spp. can harbor a double-stranded RNA virus known as Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV-1), whose presence has been reported in nine countries across the Americas and seven Leishmania species. Here, we studied 100 Leishmania ( Viannia ) isolates from patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis collected from different endemic areas in Panama from 2016 to 2022. We identified L. ( V. ) panamensis , L. ( V. ) guyanensis , L. ( V. ) braziliensis/guyanensis hybrid, and L. ( V. ) panamensis sp.1. (genetic variant). LRV-1 was detected by RT-PCR in 9% of L. (Viannia) isolates (eight cases in L. ( V. ) panamensis , and one in L. ( V. ) guyanensis) . Phylogenetic analysis based on sequencing data classified all LRV-1 isolates within genotype A, suggesting that LRV phylogenetic proximity is closely aligned with geographical distribution or to the phylogenetic proximity of the Leishmania host in the case of the L. ( V. ) panamensis and L. ( V. ) guyanensis in Panama.

Many studies on mosquito biology rely on laboratory-reared colonies, emphasizing the need for standardized protocols to investigate critical aspects such as disease biology, mosquito behavior, and vector control methods. While much knowledge is derived from anthropophilic species from genera like Anopheles, Aedes , and Culex , there is a growing interest in studying mosquitoes that feed on non-human hosts. This interest stems from the desire to gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of diverse host range use and host specificity. However, there is currently a limited number of comprehensive protocols for studying such species. Considering this gap, we present a protocol for rearing Uranotaenia lowii , a mosquito species specialized in feeding on anuran amphibians by eavesdropping on host-emitted sound cues. Additionally, we provide instructions for successfully shipping live specimens to promote research on this species and similar ones. This protocol helps fill the current gap in comprehensive guidelines for rearing and maintaining colonies of anuran host-biting mosquitoes. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers seeking to establish colonies of mosquito species from the Uranotaeniini tribe. Ultimately, this protocol may facilitate research on the evolutionary ecology of Culicidae, as this family has recently been proposed to have originated from a frog-feeding ancestor. Age-related hearing loss affects a large and growing segment of the population, with profound impacts on quality of life. Age-related pathology of the cochlea-the mammalian hearing organ-underlies age-related hearing loss. Because investigating age-related changes in the cochlea in humans is challenging and often impossible, animal models are indispensable to investigate these mechanisms as well as the complex consequences of age-related hearing loss on the brain and behavior. In this review, we advocate for a comparative and interdisciplinary approach while also addressing the challenges of comparing age-related hearing loss across species with varying lifespans. We describe the experimental advantages and limitations as well as areas for future research in well-established models of age-related hearing loss, including mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas, and birds. We also indicate the need to expand characterization of age-related hearing loss in other established animal models, especially guinea pigs, cats, and non-human primates, in which auditory function is well characterized but age-related cochlear pathology is understudied. Finally, we highlight the potential of emerging animal models for advancing our understanding of age-related hearing loss, including deer mice, with their notably extended lifespans and preserved hearing, naked mole rats, with their exceptional longevity and extensive vocal communications, as well as zebrafish, which offer genetic tractability and suitability for drug screening. Ultimately, a comparative and interdisciplinary approach in auditory research, combining insights from various animal models with human studies, is key to robust and reliable research outcomes that better advance our understanding and treatment of age-related hearing loss., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Prolonged ultraviolet exposure results in the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) in RNA. Consequently, prebiotic photolesion repair mechanisms should have played an important role in the maintenance of the structural integrity of primitive nucleic acids. 2,6-Diaminopurine is a prebiotic nucleobase that repairs CPDs with high efficiency when incorporated into polymers. We investigate the electronic deactivation pathways of 2,6-diaminopurine-2'-deoxyribose and 9-methyl-2,6-diaminopurine in acetonitrile and aqueous solution to shed light on the photophysical and excited state properties of the 2,6-diaminopurine chromophore. Evidence is presented that both are photostable compounds exhibiting similar deactivation mechanisms upon the population of the S 1 (ππ* L a ) state at 290 nm. The mechanism involves deactivation through the C2- and C6-reaction coordinates and >99% of the excited state population decays through nonradiative pathways involving two conical intersections with the ground state. The radiative and nonradiative lifetimes are longer in aqueous solution compared to acetonitrile. While τ 1 is similar in both derivatives, τ 2 is ca. 1.5-fold longer in 2,6-diaminopurine-2'-deoxyribose due to a more efficient trapping in the S 1 (ππ* L a ) minimum. Therefore, 2,6-diaminopurine could have accumulated in significant quantities during prebiotic times to be incorporated into non-canonical RNA and play a significant role in its photoprotection., (© 2023 The Authors.
