The histological changes in the liver, kidney, spleen, and gills of Syacium papillosum from the continental shelf of the Yucatan Peninsula, Gulf of Mexico, and their statistical associations with environmental conditions and pollutants were assessed in 2010, 2011, and 2012. We evaluated the extension and severity of the lesions through a degree of tissue change (DTC), and, with the sum of the number of lesion types within each of their DTC stages, we determined the histological alteration index (HAI). The liver and kidney were the most affected organs, with HAI values > 100. Fish with the most severe damage were observed on the Campeche Bank and the Caribbean Sea, contrasting with those collected from the northern Yucatan continental shelf. The presence of foci cellular alteration and abundant melanomacrophage centers indicated that these flatfishes were chronically exposed to environmental stress factors. Redundancy analyses showed strong associations between HAI values and hydrocarbon and heavy metal concentrations in muscle. Our results provide evidence for the first time of a differential health condition of the Yucatan shelf through the histopathology shown in S. papillosum, establishing the baseline for future monitoring programs in the region., (© 2024. Objectives and Background: To validate a novel screening test for cognitive and functional decline in older patients rehabilitated with complete removable dental prostheses (CRDPs)., Materials and Methods: Edentate old in-patients rehabilitated with CRDPs were included in this study. Participants were requested to remove their prostheses before their intraoral examinations. The prostheses were then presented in an inverted orientation. Participants had to correct the orientation of the prostheses and insert them in the appropriate jaws. The test was repeated after the intraoral exam. Appropriate statistical models were used (⍺ = .05) to associate the test results with the participants' mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score, functional independence measure (FIM), age and sex., Results: Among the 86 participants (mean-age: 85.4 ± 6.4 years; mean MMSE: 19.8 ± 5.5; mean FIM: 77.9 ± 20.8), 21 (24.4%) failed to correctly insert the prosthesis. The prosthesis presentation test (PPT) was associated with the FIM but not the MMSE. Regression models further confirmed an association with age (P = .043), but not sex. Additional analyses revealed the PPT test is associated with the FIM's cognitive sub-sets of memory, problem solving and social interaction., Conclusion: The PPT is a novel, simple and quick screening tool that can help detect functional difficulties in older people. It can easily be performed during an oral examination. Future studies are needed to determine whether the PPT can be used to detect deficits in executive function, as a complement to the MMSE and also as a first assessment of a patient's ability to manage dentures independently., (© 2023 The Authors. Technology transfer (TT) is a necessary, yet complex process to convey and disseminate scientific knowledge to the commercial sector. However, multiple barriers in TT can impede commercialization and innovative progress. To cultivate a deeper understanding, we conducted five interviews with strategic, elite leaders in different areas of TT in the United States. Experts shared their perspectives on the current state of TT, what needs improvement, and potential solutions to enhance the TT landscape, with a focus on biotechnology and medical devices. The formation of strong management teams, a comprehension of the regulatory, reimbursement, and funding pathways and policies, and thorough market assessments were noted as key aspects for venture success. Collaboration with Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs), industry experts, and strategic partners are also essential to support academic innovators and guide them throughout the complex commercialization process. There is agreement that a venture should have a defined vision and clear goals with a robust business case for the innovation; early involvement of TTOs is essential. Objective: To prospectively evaluate a deep learning-based denoising reconstruction (DLR) for improved resolution and image quality in musculoskeletal (MSK) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Methods: Images from 137 contrast-weighted sequences in 40 MSK patients were evaluated. Each sequence was performed twice, first with the routine parameters and reconstructed with a routine reconstruction filter (REF), then with higher resolution and reconstructed with DLR, and with three conventional reconstruction filters (NL2, GA43, GA53). The five reconstructions (REF, DLR, NL2, GA43, and GA53) were de-identified, randomized, and blindly reviewed by three MSK radiologists using eight scoring criteria and a forced ranking. Quantitative SNR, CNR, and structure's full width at half maximum (FWHM) for resolution assessment were measured and compared. To account for repeated measures, Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) with Bonferroni adjustment was used to compare the reader's scores, SNR, CNR, and FWHM between DLR vs. NL2, GA43, GA53, and REF., Results: Compared to the routine REF images, the resolution was improved by 47.61% with DLR from 0.39 ± 0.15 mm 2 to 0.20 ± 0.06 mm 2 (p < 0.001). Per-sequence average scan time was shortened by 7.93% with DLR from 165.58 ± 21.86 s to 152.45 ± 25.65 s (p < 0.001). Based on the average scores, DLR images were rated significantly higher in all image quality criteria and the forced ranking (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: This prospective clinical evaluation demonstrated that DLR allows approximately two times finer resolution and improved image quality compared to the standard-of-care images., (© 2024.
