Abstract: We introduce the LUNA neutron detector array developed for the investigation of the 13C(a,n)16O reaction towards its astrophysical s-process Gamow peak in the low-background environment of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). Eighteen 3He counters are arranged in two different configurations (in a vertical and a horizontal orientation) to optimize neutron detection effciency, target handling and target cooling over the investigated energy range Ea;lab = 300 - 400 keV (En = 2.2 - 2.6 MeV in emitted neutron energy). As a result of the deep underground location, the passive shielding of the setup and active background suppression using pulse shape discrimination, we reached a total background rate of 1.23 +- 0.12 counts/hour. This resulted in an improvement of two orders of magnitude over the state of the art allowing a direct measurement of the 13C(a,n)16O cross-section down to Ea;lab = 300 keV. The absolute neutron detection efficiency of the setup was determined using the 51V(p,n)51Cr reaction and an AmBe radioactive source, and completed with a Geant4 simulation. We determined a (34+-3) % and (38+-3) % detection efficiency for the vertical and horizontal configurations, respectively, for En = 2.4 MeV neutrons., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to be published in NIMA

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: Open quantum systems are ubiquitous in nature and central to quantum technologies. A common description of their dynamics is given by the celebrated Lindblad master equation, which can be generalized to the non-Markovian scenario. In this work, we introduce the Non-Markovian Ensemble Propagation (NMEP) method, which extends the Monte Carlo Wave-Function (MCWF) method to the non-Markovian case in a simple and general manner. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 5. A methodical approach to evaluate the potential of Quantum Computing for Manufacturing Simulations

Abstract: In this paper, a methodical approach to evaluate the potential of quantum computing for manufacturing simulation, using the example of multi-axis milling of thin-walled aerospace components, is discussed. A developed approach for identifying bottlenecks in manufacturing simulations, for which the application of quantum computing potentially provides a speed-up or increase in accuracy, is presented. Moreover, indicators of quantum computing suitability and feasibility are defined with the main objective of identifying whether a manufacturing simulation bottleneck is suitable for quantum computing applications. Abstract: The CNO cycle is one of the most important nuclear energy sources in stars. At temperatures of hydrostatic H-burning (20 MK $<$ T $<$ 80 MK) the $^{17}$O(p,$\gamma$)$^{18}$F reaction rate is dominated by the poorly constrained 64.5~keV resonance. Here we report on the first direct measurements of its resonance strength and of the direct capture contribution at 142 keV, performed with a new high sensitivity setup at LUNA. The present resonance strength of $\omega\gamma_{(p, \gamma)}$\textsuperscript{bare} = (30 $\pm$ 6\textsubscript{stat} $\pm$ 2\textsubscript{syst})~peV is about a factor of 2 higher than the values in literature, leading to a $\Gamma$\textsubscript{p}\textsuperscript{bare} = (34 $\pm$ 7\textsubscript{stat} $\pm$ 3\textsubscript{syst})~neV, in agreement with LUNA result from the (p,$\alpha$) channel. Such agreement strengthen our understanding of the oxygen isotopic ratios measured in red giant stars and in O-rich presolar grains.

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The rapid advancement and exploration of open-hardware RISC-V platforms are driving significant changes in sectors like autonomous vehicles, smart-city infrastructure, and medical devices. OpenTitan stands out as a groundbreaking open-source RISC-V design with a comprehensive security toolkit as a standalone system-on-chip (SoC). OpenTitan includes Earl Grey, a fully implemented and silicon-proven SoC, and Darjeeling, announced but not yet fully implemented. Earl Grey targets standalone SoC implementations, while Darjeeling is for integrable implementations. The literature lacks a silicon-ready embedded implementation of an open-source Root of Trust, despite lowRISC's efforts on Darjeeling. We address the limitations of existing implementations by optimizing data transfer latency between memory and cryptographic accelerators to prevent under-utilization and ensure efficient task acceleration. Our contributions include a comprehensive methodology for integrating custom extensions and IPs into the Earl Grey architecture, architectural enhancements for system-level integration, support for varied boot modes, and improved data movement across the platform. These advancements facilitate deploying OpenTitan in broader SoCs, even without specific technology-dependent IPs, providing a deployment-ready research vehicle for the community. We integrated the extended Earl Grey architecture into a reference architecture in a 22nm FDX technology node, benchmarking the enhanced architecture's performance. The results show significant improvements in cryptographic processing speed, achieving up to 2.7x speedup for SHA-256/HMAC and 1.6x for AES accelerators compared to the baseline Earl Grey architecture.

9. Calculating response functions of coupled oscillators using quantum phase estimation

Abstract: We study the problem of estimating frequency response functions of systems of coupled, classical harmonic oscillators using a quantum computer. The functional form of these response functions can be mapped to a corresponding eigenproblem of a Hermitian matrix $H$, thus suggesting the use of quantum phase estimation. Our proposed quantum algorithm operates in the standard $s$-sparse, oracle-based query access model. For a network of $N$ oscillators with maximum norm $\lVert H \rVert_{\mathrm{max}}$, and when the eigenvalue tolerance $\varepsilon$ is much smaller than the minimum eigenvalue gap, we use $\mathcal{O}(\log(N s \lVert H \rVert_{\mathrm{max}}/\varepsilon)$ algorithmic qubits and obtain a rigorous worst-case query complexity upper bound $\mathcal{O}(s \lVert H \rVert_{\mathrm{max}}/(\delta^2 \varepsilon) )$ up to logarithmic factors, where $\delta$ denotes the desired precision on the coefficients appearing in the response functions. Crucially, our proposal does not suffer from the infamous state preparation bottleneck and can as such potentially achieve large quantum speedups compared to relevant classical methods. As a proof-of-principle of exponential quantum speedup, we show that a simple adaptation of our algorithm solves the random glued-trees problem in polynomial time. We discuss practical limitations as well as potential improvements for quantifying finite size, end-to-end complexities for application to relevant instances., Comment: 13+9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. The discovery of this system implies an increase in the expected rate of neutron star-black hole mergers with electromagnetic counterparts and provides further evidence for compact objects existing within the purported lower mass gap., Comment: 45 pages (10 pages author list, 13 pages main text, 1 page acknowledgements, 13 pages appendices, 8 pages bibliography), 17 figures, 16 tables. Abstract: In this work we prove that the non-negative functions $u \in L^s_{loc}(\Omega)$, for some $s>0$, belonging to the De Giorgi classes \begin{equation}\label{eq0.1} \fint\limits_{B_{r(1-\sigma)}(x_{0})} \big|\nabla \big(u-k\big)_{-}\big|^{p}\, dx \leqslant \frac{c}{\sigma^{q}} \,\Lambda\big(x_{0}, r, k\big)\bigg(\frac{k}{r}\bigg)^{p}\bigg(\frac{\big|B_{r}(x_{0})\cap\big\{u\leqslant k\big\}\big|}{|B_{r}(x_{0})|}\bigg)^{1-\delta}, \end{equation} under proper assumptions on $\Lambda$, satisfy a weak Harnack inequality with a constant depending on the $L^s$-norm of $u$. Under suitable assumptions on $\Lambda$, the minimizers of elliptic functionals with generalized Orlicz growth belong to De Giorgi classes satisfying \eqref{eq0.1}; thus this study gives a wider interpretation of Harnack-type estimates derived to double-phase, degenerate double-phase functionals and functionals with variable exponents.

12. Fine boundary continuity for degenerate double-phase diffusion

Abstract: We study the boundary behavior of solutions to parabolic double-phase equations through the celebrated Wiener's sufficiency criterion. The analysis is conducted for cylindrical domains and the regularity up to the lateral boundary is shown in terms of either its $p$ or $q$ capacity, depending on whether the phase vanishes at the boundary or not. Eventually we obtain a fine boundary estimate that, when considering uniform geometric conditions as density or fatness, leads us to the boundary H\"older continuity of solutions. Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: RISC-V open-source systems are emerging in deployment scenarios where safety and security are critical. OpenTitan is an open-source silicon root-of-trust designed to be deployed in a wide range of systems, from high-end to deeply embedded secure environments. Despite the availability of various cryptographic hardware accelerators that make OpenTitan suitable for offloading cryptographic workloads from the main processor, there has been no accurate and quantitative establishment of the benefits derived from using OpenTitan as a secure accelerator. This paper addresses this gap by thoroughly analysing strengths and inefficiencies when offloading cryptographic workloads to OpenTitan. The focus is on three key IPs - HMAC, AES, and OpenTitan Big Number accelerator (OTBN) - which can accelerate four security workloads: Secure Hash Functions, Message Authentication Codes, Symmetric cryptography, and Asymmetric cryptography. For every workload, we develop a bare-metal driver for the OpenTitan accelerator and analyze its efficiency when computation is offloaded from a RISC-V application core within a System-on-Chip designed for secure Cyber-Physical Systems applications. Finally, we assess it against a software implementation on the application core. The characterization was conducted on a cycle-accurate RTL simulator of the System-on-Chip (SoC). Our study demonstrates that OpenTitan significantly outperforms software implementations, with speedups ranging from 4.3x to 12.5x. However, there is potential for even greater gains as the current OpenTitan utilizes a fraction of the accelerator bandwidths, which ranges from 16% to 61%, depending on the memory being accessed and the accelerator used. Abstract: Modern RISC-V platforms control and monitor security-critical systems such as industrial controllers and autonomous vehicles. While these platforms feature a Root-of-Trust (RoT) to store authentication secrets and enable secure boot technologies, they often lack Control-Flow Integrity (CFI) enforcement and are vulnerable to cyber-attacks which divert the control flow of an application to trigger malicious behaviours. Recent techniques to enforce CFI in RISC-V systems include ISA modifications or custom hardware IPs, all requiring ad-hoc binary toolchains or design of CFI primitives in hardware. This paper proposes TitanCFI, a novel approach to enforce CFI in the RoT. TitanCFI modifies the commit stage of the protected core to stream control flow instructions to the RoT and it integrates the CFI enforcement policy in the RoT firmware. Our approach enables maximum reuse of the hardware resource present in the System-on-Chip (SoC), and it avoids the design of custom IPs and the modification of the compilation toolchain, while exploiting the RoT tamper-proof storage and cryptographic accelerators to secure CFI metadata. We implemented the proposed architecture on a modern RISC-V SoC along with a return address protection policy in the RoT, and benchmarked area and runtime overhead. Environmental stress caused by conventional housing conditions can negatively affect well-being and productivity. High temperature, overcrowding, poor ventilation, insufficient lighting, and wire cages are some of the most prominent stressors in conventional housing systems. To address environmental stress in chicken farms, some strategies and tools, such as using anti-stress feed additives and enriching cages, can help improve bird behavioral activities and welfare. Abstract: COVID-19 vaccination rates remain lower among adolescents compared with adults. Youth participatory action research (YPAR) offers opportunities to inform youth vaccine communication at the local and population level. However, few studies have integrated systematic health communication research with YPAR. In the current study, a diverse team of paid high school interns, undergraduate student mentors and communication researchers in West Philadelphia YPAR programs developed a theory-informed communication survey to measure teen COVID-19 vaccine beliefs, information sources and behavior. The survey was distributed locally and informed youth-created vaccine campaign messages. In addition, YPAR-derived survey measures complimented a qualitative online elicitation survey with US young adults. Responses were coded using inductive content analysis, informing measures for a subsequent population-level study of young adults. This research followed protocols approved by an Institutional Review Board. Applying a YPAR framework elevated youth voices in the study development process. Communication theory and methods aided the development of survey studies to advance both local YPAR program objectives and population-level research. Future implications are discussed.

27. Strategies to Better Identify Student Homelessness Using Data in an Urban School District

Abstract: We tested 10 data-based strategies to better identify student homelessness in Camden City School District, which has a student body from minoritized backgrounds. We operationalized strategies through a research-practice partnership, following the federal homelessness definition. Data span 5 years (2014-15 through 2018-19), including integrated education, municipal, and health records. Nine strategies indicated significant unidentified student homelessness (min: 15; max: 5,008; p-values < 0.001). Consistent with homelessness, six strategies produced groups with lower attendance (p-values < 0.01) and seven with increased school mobility (p-values < 0.05). Homelessness was 34% greater in the most conservative interpretation, though counts could be as much as 454% greater. Student homelessness is more prevalent than recognized, data-based strategies can guide proactive outreach, and cross-system partnerships are warranted.

30. Deep learning for the super resolution of Mediterranean sea surface temperature fields

Abstract: Sea surface temperature (SST) is one of the essential variables of the Earth's climate system. Being at the air–sea interface, SST modulates heat fluxes in and out of the ocean, provides insight into several upper and interior ocean dynamical processes, and is a fundamental indicator of climate variability potentially impacting the health of marine ecosystems. Its accurate estimation and regular monitoring from space is therefore crucial. However, even if satellite infrared/microwave measurements provide much better coverage than what is achievable from in situ platforms, they cannot sense the sea surface under cloudy and rainy conditions. Large gaps are present even in merged multi-sensor satellite products, and different statistical strategies, mostly based on optimal interpolation (OI) algorithms, have thus been proposed to obtain gap-free (L4) images. These techniques, however, filter out the signals below the space–time decorrelation scales considered, significantly smoothing most of the small mesoscale and submesoscale features. Here, deep learning models, originally designed for single-image super resolution (SR), are applied to enhance the effective resolution of SST products and the accuracy of SST gradients. SR schemes include a set of computer vision techniques leveraging convolutional neural networks to retrieve high-resolution data from low-resolution images. A dilated convolutional multi-scale learning network, which includes an adaptive residual strategy and implements a channel attention mechanism, is used to reconstruct features in SST data at 1/100° spatial resolution starting from 1/16° data over the Mediterranean Sea. The application of this technique shows an improvement in the high-resolution reconstruction, capturing small-scale features and providing a root-mean-squared-difference improvement of 0.02 °C with respect to the L3 ground-truth data.

31. Skin sea surface temperature schemes in coupled ocean–atmosphere modelling: the impact of chlorophyll-interactive e-folding depth

Abstract: In this paper, we explore different prognostic methods to account for skin sea surface temperature diurnal variations in a coupled ocean–atmosphere regional model of the Mediterranean Sea. Our aim is to characterise the sensitivity of the considered methods with respect to the underlying assumption of how the solar radiation shapes the warm layer of the ocean. All existing prognostic methods truncate solar transmission coefficient at a warm-layer reference depth that is constant in space and time; instead, we implement a new scheme where this latter is estimated from a chlorophyll dataset as the e-folding depth of solar transmission, which thus allows it to vary in space and time depending on seawater's transparency conditions. Comparison against satellite data shows that our new scheme, compared to the one already implemented within the ocean model, improves the spatially averaged diurnal signal, especially during winter, and the seasonally averaged one in spring and autumn, while showing a monthly basin-wide averaged bias smaller than 0.1 K year-round. In April, when most of the drifters' measurements are available, the new scheme mitigates the bias during nighttime, keeping it positive but smaller than 0.12 K during the rest of the monthly averaged day. The new scheme implemented within the ocean model improves the old one by about 0.1 K, particularly during June. All the methods considered here showed differences with respect to objectively analysed profiles confined between 0.5 K during winter and 1 K in summer for both the eastern and the western Mediterranean regions, especially over the uppermost 60 m. The new scheme reduces the RMSE on the top 15 m in the central Mediterranean for summertime months compared to the scheme already implemented within the ocean model. Overall, the surface net total heat flux shows that the use of a skin sea surface temperature (SST) parameterisation brings the budget about 1.5 W m−2 closer to zero on an annual basis, despite all simulations showing an annual net heat loss from the ocean to the atmosphere. Our “chlorophyll-interactive” method proved to be an effective enhancement of existing methods, its strength relying on an improved physical consistency with the solar extinction implemented in the ocean component.

Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic performance of the 70-gene signature, MammaPrint, in an Italian single-center prospective cohort of early-stage intermediate-risk breast cancer (BC) patients. Methods: A total of 195 eligible early BC cases were tested for genomic risk between 2006 and 2013. In this retrospective analysis, the association of genomic risk with distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed using Cox regression models, adjusting for clinical and pathological tumor characteristics. Results: MammaPrint identified 118 (60.5 %) patients with genomically Low Risk tumors and 77 (39.5 %) patients with genomically High Risk tumors. Age, menopausal status, tumor size, receptor status, and nodal status were comparable between MammaPrint Risk categories. The median follow-up was 8.4 years for DMFS and 9.3 years for OS; 8-year follow-up was reported for both endpoints. The 8-year DMFS was 90.4 % (95 % CI 84.9–95.9) in patients with MammaPrint Low Risk tumors compared to 60.8 % (95 % CI 49.8–71.8) for patients with High Risk tumors. Patients with MammaPrint Low Risk tumors exhibited significantly superior 8-year OS (97.3 %; 95 % CI 94.4–100) compared with MammaPrint High Risk tumors (89.5 %; 95 % CI 82.6–96.4; p = 0.028). Multivariate analyses identified MammaPrint as significantly associated with 8-year DMFS and MammaPrint together with Progesterone Receptor positivity with 8-year OS. Conclusion: The prognostic performance of MammaPrint was demonstrated in early-stage clinically intermediate to high-risk BC patients. Moreover, patients with MammaPrint Low Risk tumors had good outcome regardless of treatment regimen, thus supporting personalized treatment choices.

The Italian Lung Cancer Observational Study (LUCENT) addresses this need by investigating the outcomes of patients with early and locally advanced lung cancer in Italy. ObjectiveWith a focus on real-world data and patient registries, this study aims to provide comprehensive insights into clinical, psychosocial, and economic impacts, contributing to informed decision-making in health care. MethodsLUCENT is a prospective observational multicenter cohort study enrolling patients eligible for minimally invasive manual, robot-assisted, or traditional open surgery. The study will develop a web-based registry to collect longitudinal surgical, oncological, and socioeconomic outcome data. The primary objectives include performance assessment through the establishment of national benchmarks based on risk-adjusted outcomes and processes of care indicators. The secondary objectives encompass economic and psychosocial impact assessments of innovative technologies and treatment pathways. The multicenter design ensures a diverse and representative study population. ResultsThe evolving landscape of NSCLC treatment necessitates a nuanced approach with consideration of the dynamic shifts in therapeutic strategies. LUCENT strives to fill existing knowledge gaps by providing a platform for collecting and analyzing real-world data, emphasizing the importance of patient-reported outcomes in enhancing the understanding of the disease. By developing a web-based registry, the study not only facilitates efficient data collection but also addresses the limitations of traditional methods, such as suboptimal response rates and costs associated with paper-and-pencil questionnaires. Recruitment will be conducted from January 01, 2024, to December 31, 2026. Follow-up will be performed for a minimum of 2 years. The study will be completed in the year 2028.
