Abstract Background Previous studies demonstrated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) plays an important role in regulating lipid metabolism, but the relationship between the two is controversial. Meanwhile, it has not been reported in a population with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods We divided 1718 first-episode and drug naïve patients with MDD into a TSH abnormal group (TSH-AB) and a TSH normal group (TSH-NOR). The participants in the two groups were assessed by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the positive subscale of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. The patients’ blood was tested for TSH, free T3, free T4, fasting blood glucose, lipid indexes and body mass index was recorded. Results The participants in the TSH-AB group had significantly higher HAMD scores, HAMA scores and total scores of positive symptoms, as well as higher incidence of suicide attempts than those in the TSH-NOR group, accompanied by significantly higher thyroglobulin antibodies, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, fasting blood glucose values, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels compared with those of TSH-NOR patients. However, the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of TSH-AB patients was lower than those of TSH-NOR patients. TSH values were positively correlated with TC, TG, and LDL-C values, and negatively correlated with HDL-C value. Conclusion TSH was highly correlated with abnormal lipid metabolism in patients with MDD. The specific molecular mechanism of the relationship between TSH, lipid metabolism and the development of depression needs to be further in-depth investigation.

Abstract Calcium (Ca) is an essential mineral nutrient and plays a crucial signaling role in all living organisms. Increasing Ca content in staple foods such as rice is vital for improving Ca nutrition of humans. Here we map a quantitative trait locus that controls Ca concentration in rice grains and identify the causal gene as GCSC1 (Grain Ca and Sr Concentrations 1), which encodes a chloroplast vesicle localized homo-oligomeric protein. GCSC1 exhibits Ca2+ transport activity in heterologous assays in yeast and Xenopus laevis oocytes and is involved in the efflux of Ca2+ from the chloroplast to the cytosol. Knockout of GCSC1 results in increased chloroplast Ca concentration, lower stomatal conductance in leaves and enhanced Ca allocation to grains. Natural variation in grain Ca concentration is attributed to the variable expression of GCSC1 resulting from its promoter sequence variation. Our study identifies a chloroplast localized heavy metal-associated domain containing protein that regulates chloroplast Ca2+ efflux and provides a way to biofortify Ca in rice to benefit human nutrition.

A series of star-shaped multi-arm styrene-butadiene copolymers (S-g-SSB-6) were synthesized by living anionic polymerization, with n-butyllithium as initiator, styrene and butadiene as monomers, 2,2-di(tetra-hydrofuran-2-yl) propane as polar structure regulator and hexachlorodisilane as coupling agent. The molecular weight and its distribution, coupling arm number and coupling efficiency of S-g-SSB-6 were characterized by gel permeation chromatogram. The rheological properties of S-g-SSB-6, star-shaped multi-arm styrene-butadiene copolymer with SiCl4 as coupling agent, and linear styrene-butadiene copolymer (L-SSB) were characterized by rotational rheometer, and the effects of branched chain length and branched chain flexibility on the rheological properties of S-g-SSB-6 were also investigated. The results showed that the coupling arm numbers of S-g-SSB-6 reached 4.1, and the coupling efficiency was greater than 80%. S-g-SSB had lower melt viscosity and better fluid flow than those of L-SSB under the same weight-average molecular weight. When the branching degree was the same, the melt viscosity of S-g-SSB-6 increased with the increase of single arm molecular weight and molecular chain rigidity.

ObjectivesConsidering the importance of mental health help-seeking, researchers have closely examined the relationship between mental health literacy (MHL) and help-seeking intention (HSI). Furthermore, the high impact of stigma and the potential value of social support on HSI have been recognised. However, the relationship between these variables has not been fully tested within the context of Chinese elite athletes. This study addressed this gap by examining the relationship between MHL and HSI. Furthermore, it explored the mediating effects of public stigma, self-stigma, and social support on the relationship between MHL and HSI among Chinese elite athletes.Methods450 Chinese elite athletes (Mage = 18.12, SD = 3.20, 46.2% female) self-reported their MHL, public stigma, self-stigma, social support, and HSI. Mediation analysis was conducted using the bootstrap approach of the PROCESS macro version 3.3 of SPSS 25.ResultsThe results showed a significant positive correlation between MHL and HSI (r = 0.348). Summary: Background: Despite numerous studies having evaluated the associations between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk of specific cancers other than anogenital tract and oropharyngeal, the findings are inconsistent and the quality of evidence has not been systematically quantified. We aimed to summarise the existing evidence as well as to evaluate the strength and credibility of these associations. Methods: We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational studies. PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched from inception to March 2024. Studies with systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examined associations between HPV or HPV-associated genotypes infection and specific cancers were eligible for this review. The quality of the methodology was evaluated using A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). The credibility of the evidence was assessed using GRADE. The protocol was preregistered with PROSPERO (CRD42023439070). Findings: The umbrella review identified 31 eligible studies reporting 87 associations with meta-analytic estimates, including 1191 individual studies with 336,195 participants. Of those, 29 (93.5%) studies were rated as over moderate quality by AMSTAR. Only one association indicating HPV-18 infection associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (odds ratio [OR] = 3.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.24–5.41) was graded as convincing evidence. There were five unique outcomes identified as highly suggestive evidence, including HPV infection increased the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 7.03, 95% CI = 3.87–12.76), oesophageal cancer (OR = 3.32, 95% CI = 2.54–4.34), oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 2.05–3.54), lung cancer (OR = 3.60, 95% CI = 2.59–5.01), and breast cancer (OR = 6.26, 95% CI = 4.35–9.00). According to GRADE, one association was classified as high, indicating that compared with the controls in normal tissues, HPV infection was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Interpretation: The umbrella review synthesised up-to-date observational evidence on HPV infection with the risk of breast cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma, oesophageal cancer, oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and lung cancer. Further larger prospective cohort studies are needed to verify the associations, providing public health recommendations for prevention of disease. IntroductionElite athletes' help-seeking on mental health might be influenced by their mental health literacy (MHL) and mental health experiences. The current study aimed to explore the MHL, experiences and help-seeking behaviours among elite athletes using a qualitative approach.MethodsFace-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted among 20 Chinese elite athletes, 12 coaches, and 5 team officials. Interview data was analyzed using content analysis.ResultsSeven main themes emerged from the analysis. The current study revealed that Chinese elite athletes suffered from various mental health issues and athletes' MHL levels, help-seeking attitudes and intentions, Chinese sports environments, and Chinese cultural background could impact their help-seeking behaviours.ConclusionSupport for Chinese elite athletes' mental health and help-seeking requires improvement.

IntroductionBacteria and archaea are important components in shallow lake ecosystems and are crucial for biogeochemical cycling. While the submerged macrophyte loss is widespread in shallow lakes, the effect on the bacteria and archaea in the sediment and water is not yet widely understood.MethodsIn this study, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to explore the bacteria and archaea in samples taken from the sediment and water in the submerged macrophyte abundant (MA) and submerged macrophyte loss (ML) areas of Caohai Lake, Guizhou, China.ResultsThe results showed that the dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi in the sediment; the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota in the water. The dominant archaea in sediment and water were the same, in the order of Crenarchaeota, Thermoplasmatota, and Halobacterota. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analyses showed that bacterial and archaeal community structures in the water were significantly affected by the loss of submerged macrophytes, but not by significant changes in the sediment. This suggests that the loss of submerged macrophytes has a stronger effect on the bacterial and archaeal community structures in water than in sediment. Furthermore, plant biomass (PB) was the key factor significantly influencing the bacterial community structure in water, while total nitrogen (TN) was the main factor significantly influencing the archaeal community structure in water. The loss of submerged macrophytes did not significantly affect the alpha diversity of the bacterial and archaeal communities in either the sediment or water. Based on network analyses, we found that the loss of submerged macrophytes reduced the connectivity and complexity of bacterial patterns in sediment and water. For archaea, network associations were stronger for MA network than for ML network in sediment, but network complexity for archaea in water was not significantly different between the two areas.DiscussionThis study assesses the impacts of submerged macrophyte loss on bacteria and archaea in lakes from microbial perspective, which can help to provide further theoretical basis for microbiological research and submerged macrophytes restoration in shallow lakes.

Atmospheric turbulence characteristics are essential in determining the quality of astronomical images and implementing adaptive optics systems. In this study, the vertical distributions of optical turbulence at the Peak Terskol observatory (43.27472°N 42.50083°E, 3127 m a.s.l.) using the Era-5 reanalysis and scintillation measurements are investigated. For the closest reanalysis grid node to the observatory, vertical profiles of the structural constant of the air refractive index turbulent fluctuations Cn2 were obtained. The calculated Cn2(z) vertical profiles are compared with the vertical distribution of turbulence intensity obtained from tomographic measurements with a Shack–Hartmann sensor. The atmospheric coherence length at the location of Terskol Peak was estimated. Using a combination of atmospheric models and paramaterization schemes of turbulence, Cn2(z) profiles at Mt. Kurapdag were obtained. The values of atmospheric coherence length at Peak Terskol are compared with estimated values of this length at the ten astronomical sites, including Ali, Lenghu and Daocheng.

Discriminant analysis of similar food samples is an important aspect of achieving food quality control. The effective combination of Raman spectroscopy and machine learning algorithms has become an extremely attractive approach to develop intelligent discrimination techniques. Feature spectral analysis can help researchers gain a deeper understanding of the data patterns in food quality discrimination. Herein, this work takes the discrimination of three brands of dairy products as an example to investigate the Raman spectral feature based on the support vector machines (SVM), extreme learning machines (ELM) and convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms. The results show that there are certain differences in the optimal spectral feature interval corresponding to different machine learning algorithms. Selecting the appropriate spectral feature interval can maintain high recognition accuracy and improve the computational efficiency of the algorithm. For example, the SVM algorithm has a recognition accuracy of 100% in the 890-980 cm−1, 1410-1500 cm−1 fusion spectral range, which takes about 200 s. The ELM algorithm also has a recognition accuracy of 100% in the 890-980 cm−1, 1410-1500 cm−1 fusion spectral range, which takes less than 0.3 s. The CNN algorithm has a recognition accuracy of 100% in the 890-980 cm−1, 1050-1180 cm−1, 1410-1500 cm−1 fusion spectral range, which takes about 80 s. In addition, by analyzing the distribution of spectral feature intervals based on Euclidean distance, the distribution of experimental samples based on feature spectra is visually displayed. Through the spectral feature analysis process of similar samples, a set of analysis strategies is provided to deeply reveal the data foundation of classification algorithms, which can provide reference for the analysis of relevant discriminative research patterns.

Six benzophenone derivatives, carneusones A-F (1–6), along with seven known compounds (7–13) were isolated from a strain of sponge-derived marine fungus Aspergillus carneus GXIMD00543. Their chemical structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic data and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds 5, 6, and 8 exhibited moderate anti-inflammatory activity on NO secretion using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells with EC50 values of 34.6 ± 0.9, 20.2 ± 1.8, and 26.8 ± 1.7 μM, while 11 showed potent effect with an EC50 value of 2.9 ± 0.1 μM.

In historical reinforced concrete buildings, square ribbed rebars, round ribbed rebars and square twisted rebars are the main steel rebars. In order to determine the corrosion behavior of such historical steel rebars, we investigated the deterioration mechanisms of steel rebars in historical architecture in simulated concrete pore solution using various electrochemical tests and microscopic examination of corrosion products. The hot-rolled ribbed bar (HRB)335 rebars used in modern buildings were used as a control sample. The results demonstrated that the corrosion process of the historical rebars was similar to that of HRB335 rebars. Nevertheless, there were some differences in the chemical composition, microstructure, passive film characteristics, critical chloride ion concentration, and corrosion products. In the passivation stage, the stability order of the passive film generated on the surface of the rebars was as follows: square ribbed rebars > square twisted rebars > HRB335 rebars > round ribbed rebars. In the Cl− corrosion stage, the damaging effect order of Cl− on the passive film is square ribbed rebars > HRB335 rebars > square twisted rebars > round ribbed rebars. The critical chloride ion concentration was between 0.5% and 2.0% by weight. The corrosion products were mainly Fe2O3 , α -FeOOH, γ -FeOOH. β -FeOOH, and protective Fe3O4. The corrosion products of HRB335 rebars were mainly nonprotective crystallized FeOOH with various morphologies. The results of this study provide a scientific foundation for the conservation design and residual life prediction of historic reinforced concrete buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a simple optical model, which consists of two Kerr nonlinear parallel planar waveguides sandwiching a one-dimensional photonic crystal for demonstrating the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking in optics. We study the shape and stability of soliton pairs propagating in two planar waveguides and the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the power distribution of solitons in the two waveguides. The results of numerical simulation show that there is supercritical type of spontaneous symmetry breaking in this system. More optical power P and smaller refractive index of photonic crystals C 0 make soliton solutions more prone to spontaneous symmetry breaking bifurcation. Asymmetric soliton solutions and symmetric soliton solutions correspond to different dispersion relations. Under the given total power P, for the symmetric soliton solutions, the propagation constant k increases linearly with C 0 , and for asymmetric soliton solutions, the propagation constant k decreases nonlinearly with C 0 . The minimum point of k (C 0) is just the demarkation between the symmetric soliton solutions and the asymmetric soliton solutions. If C 0 is fixed, the minimum point of the Hamiltonian of the system, E (P) , is also the critical point of the two different kinds of soliton solutions. A pair of atropisomers secofumitremorgins C (1a) and D (1b), together with fifteen known alkaloids (2-16), were isolated from a saltern-derived fungus Aspergillus fumigatus GXIMD00544. The structures of atropisomers 1a and 1b were elucidated by the detailed spectroscopic data, chemical reaction and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds 1 and 8 displayed antifungal spore germination effects against plant pathogenic fungus associated with sugarcane Fusarium sp. with inhibitory rates of 53% and 77% at the concentration of 100 µM, repectively. Atropisomers 1 also exhibited antifouling potential against Balanus amphitrite larval settlement with an inhibitory rate of 96% at the concentration of 100 µM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
