The Caribbean is a microcosm of the world's religions. In this very small geographic space one encounters global religions as well as indigenous religious practices--Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Santería, Vodou, and much more. Due to this diversity, introducing and describing the Caribbean religious context is difficult. The racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of this region make brief introductions to Caribbean religions incapable of truly addressing its complex and diverse religious landscape. Too often Caribbean religion is studied through the lens of one discrete religious tradition or geographic setting. The Oxford Handbook of Caribbean Religions offers a comprehensive overview of Caribbean religions, one that respects the diversity of the religious traditions and the national particularity of the region. Focusing on multiple geographic settings, this volume addresses the prominent religious traditions in the Caribbean by examining a cross-section of themes that impact the region and the academic study of Caribbean religion. Opening with an overview of the multiple religions extant in the region, including some of the historical traditions that inform the contemporary context, the first section provides an overview of the history and beliefs found in the Caribbean. The second section discusses geographic-centered studies of numerous Caribbean nations. Finally, the third section brings numerous religious traditions in dialogue through thematic chapters that touch on the way religion has impacted the Caribbean beyond a traditional institutional focus.

Born in a provincial city in the Peruvian Andes, the Franciscan linguist and theologian Luis Gerónimo de Oré (1554–1630) lived during a critical period in the formation of the modern world, as the global empire of Spain engaged in a nearly continuous struggle over resources and religion.In the first full-length biography of Oré, Noble David Cook and Alexandra Parma Cook reconstruct the friar's life and the communities in which he circulated, tracing the career of this first-generation Creole from his roots in Huamanga to his work in Andean missions, his activities at the royal courts of Spain and throughout Spanish America, until his final years as bishop of Concepción, Chile. While serving in Peru's Colca Valley, Oré composed multilingual texts, translating doctrinal concepts into the indigenous languages Quechua and Aymara, alongside Latin and Spanish, which missionaries and secular clergy frequently used in their conversion efforts. As commissioner to Cuba and La Florida, he inspected the frontier missions along the coast of what became the southeastern United States and wrote an influential history of these outposts and their environment. After Philip III dispatched him to Concepción, Oré spent his last years working in the southernmost end of the Americas, where he continued his advocacy for indigenous justice and engaged in heated arguments with the governor over defensive war, royal patronage, and Indian enslavement.Drawn from research conducted in Spain and Latin America over several decades, this consequential biography recovers from obscurity a colonial friar whose legacy continues in the Andean world today.

This book explores the emergence of literary history and criticism in the Americas during the 18th century, focusing on natural history as a matrix for literary history and criticism, the geopolitical functions of literary criticism in the periodical press, and the recovery of manuscripts as a residual product of modernity. The study questions the epistemological conflicts provoked by the manuscript status of a considerable part of 18th-century scholarship, in which the projects of an American modernity appear subjugated by and yet resilient to the power of the European printing press.

During a crucial period in opera's development as a genre and as a business, the flamboyantly libertine Spanish aristocrat Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán (1629-87), Marqués de Heliche and del Carpio, influenced operatic practices and productions for both Italian and Hispanic operas. A voracious collector of books and antiquities and famed connoisseur of visual art, the marqués financed operas in both Spain and Italy and further shaped them through his ideas, energy, and politics. His legacy also brought forth the first operas of the Americas, as posthumous revivals of the operatic genres he nurtured appeared in the Americas less than fifteen years after his death. In this book, author Louise K. Stein follows the trajectory of this first operatic producer to have shaped opera in two different worlds--Europe and the Americas--and in doing so, advances our musical and historical understanding of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century opera and cultural encounter. Each chapter focuses on different productions spearheaded by the Marqués in Madrid, Rome, and Naples during his lifetime, with the final chapter considering how his influence continued in operatic productions in Lima, Mexico City, and other regions of New Spain after his death. Alongside this portrait of the distinguish patron of the arts, Stein shows how conventions of musical dramaturgy for both private and commercial opera were developed within a consistent politics of production across the far-flung administrative centers of the Spanish empire in the years 1650-1730. She reveals the place of opera within the siglo de oro (Golden Age) of Hispanic theatre and delves deeply into how the Marqués became the principal patron of Alessandro Scarlatti in Italy after his time in Rome, sparking a reliable production system for Italian opera in Naples. Stein also addresses gendered performance--how beliefs about female fertility conditioned listeners and shaped the operatic genre--and advances the concept of the'womanly voice'in the first extant Hispanic operas, the Italian operas produced in Naples between 1683 and 1687, and the first operas of the Americas from 1701 to 1730.
