Food insecurity (FI) has been identified as a determinant of child development, yet evidence quantifying this association using the newly developed Early Childhood Development Index 2030 (ECDI2030) remains limited. Herein, we provide national estimates of early childhood development (ECD) risks using the ECDI2030 and examined to what extent FI was associated with ECD among children aged 24–59 months in Nigeria. This population based cross-sectional analyses used data from the UNICEF-supported 2021 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey in Nigeria. The analytic sample comprised children aged 24–59 months (weighted N = 12,112). We measured early childhood development for each child using the ECDI2030, measured across three domains: learning, psychosocial well-being and health. Food insecurity was assessed using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), categorized as none/mild, moderate and severe. We fitted mixed-effects multilevel logistic regression models, with random intercepts, to estimate the odds of association between FI status and ECD. A total of 11,494 children aged 24–59 months (mean ± SD age, 43.4 ± 9.9 months), including 5,797 boys (50.2%) and 5,697 girls (49.8%), were included in the study. Approximately 46.4% of children were developmentally off track and about 76% of children lived in food-insecure households. The intercept-only model indicated significant variation in ECD prevalence across communities (τ00 = 0.94, intraclass correlation = 0.22, p < 0.0001), suggesting nonignorable variability in ECD across communities. Adjusting for confounders, we observed no significant association between FI and ECD. However, increasing child's age and disability status appeared as significant risk factors for higher odds of children being developmentally off track. These findings highlight that while FI alone may not explain ECD, a combination of individual and contextual factors plays a crucial role. Future interventions addressing ECD in Nigeria should consider these multidimensional influences to promote optimal child development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In language use and comprehension, even when practitioners are able to identify the same cultural focal discourse, differences in the interpretation of the cultural information contained therein can arise. This phenomenon of differing interpretations can be explained through Pierre Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital, which, due to its accumulation, translates into specific bodily and cognitive dispositions, manifested as particular modes of action. This study aims to investigate typical linguistic materials that store cultural capital. Specifically, it analyzes Liu Yuxi's Bamboo Branch Song (first of two) and six English translations, comparing the differential accumulation of cultural capital associated with the cultural focal point "Qing(?)" across the levels of language skills, norms, and values. The exchange of cultural capital in language activities is inevitable; however, the unsuccessful personal internalization of social habitus can hinder this exchange, causing it to remain at the norm level and resulting in a loss at the value level. This research also highlights the risks associated with the exchange of cultural capital conveyed through language, offering insights into cultural transmission and communication. Topics include the process of developing needs assessments; factors influencing discharge planning and readiness; and the importance of recovery-oriented, person-centered care that addresses both mental health and physical health needs.

John Rawls' The Law of Peoples has typically been read as an intervention in the field of 'global justice'. In this paper, I offer a different and widely overlooked interpretation. I argue that The Law of Peoples is a secular theodicy. Rawls wants to show that the 'great evils' of history do not condemn humankind by using a secularised form of moral faith to search for signs that the social world allows for the possibility of perfect justice. There are, I show, striking homologies between this argument and the Christian theodicy that Rawls wrote in 1942, A Brief Inquiry Into the Meaning of Sin and Faith. Perhaps more significantly, I draw out how there is, as Rawls himself appears to acknowledge, an intimate relationship between this redemptive project and Rawls' idealistic and moralistic approach to political philosophy. This article examines the relation between the critical theory of Moishe Postone and the philosophy of Theodor Adorno. While the former is clearly influenced by the latter, these influences mostly stay implicit. When explicit, he does not so easily put his own thought in line with Adorno's and is highly critical of him. I will investigate the ways in which ideas from Adorno made their way into Postone's work, but also where the latter diverts from them. As will be shown, Postone's critical theory runs into a problem when one examines the immanent ground of his critical norm, freedom. Adorno, on the contrary, does succeed in employing the same norm in his own immanent critique. I will conclude that the problem Postone encounters can be avoided by being more of an 'Adornian', and that his theory allows this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the effects of disclosure in a dynamic market with imperfect competition. The supply of an asset is determined by a large shareholder with price impact, who trades slowly to diversify away from concentrated ownership. Small investors provide capital and thus risk-bearing capacity to the market. Although it is well known that disclosure impedes risk sharing by shifting risk before future trading opportunities, we show that disclosure, at the same time, can enhance risk sharing by promoting more trades. Resolving this tradeoff, an interior level of disclosure quality maximizes the small investors' surplus as well as the total surplus, but minimizes the large shareholder's surplus.
