ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to perform early selection of the best progenies for traits related to tolerance to water deficit, pests, and diseases in Eucalyptus progeny tests. The experimental trials were set up in a randomized block design, with one plant per plot, and 20 replicates across three distinct locations (Buritizeiro/MG, Bocaiúva/MG, and Inhambupe/BA). At 6 months of age, the tested families were evaluated in terms of mean annual increment (MAI) and tolerance to pests and diseases. The analyses were conducted based on the genetic-statistics procedure of mixed models via REML/BLUP. The selection process was based on the estimated genetic values for the families, associating both traits in analyses using selection indices, namely the Multiplicative Selection Index and the Mulamba and Mock Selection Index, which allowed simultaneous selection for productivity (MAI) and tolerance to biotic agents. In Buritizeiro/MG and Bocaiúva/MG, plant tolerance to the psyllid (Glycaspis brimblecombei) was evaluated, while in Inhambupe/BA, tolerance to eucalyptus rust (Austropuccinia psidii) was assessed. For the trait of tolerance to biotic agents, heritabilities (hg2) were moderate across the three sites, with values of 0.20, 0.26, and 0.24 in Buritizeiro, Bocaiúva, and Inhambupe, respectively. The use of the Multiplicative Index (MI) and Mulamba and Mock Index (MMI) enabled the selection of genetic materials with better performance for both traits simultaneously.

Este estudo examinou a estrutura da paisagem de uma unidade de conservação de uso sustentável no Bioma Mata Atlântica no estado da Bahia, Brasil, sob perspectiva da Ecologia de Paisagem. O objetivo principal foi analisar a estrutura da paisagem da Área de Proteção Ambiental do Pratigi (APA do Pratigi) utilizando métricas estruturais da paisagem. A pesquisa concentrou-se na questão: quais foram as mudanças dos padrões estruturais da paisagem na APA do Pratigi no período de 1985 a 2021? Os dados anuais de uso e ocupação da terra do Brasil de 1985-2021 foram obtidos do banco de dados do MapBiomas, e as métricas da paisagem foram analisadas usando o software R. Os resultados indicaram que a classe floresta era predominante na paisagem, mas diminuiu de 122.394.15 ha em 1985 para 107.737,29 ha em 2021, uma perda de 14.656,86 ha. Por outro lado, a classe agropecuária aumentou de 28.298,88 ha em 1985 para 43.453,62 ha em 2021, o que representa um aumento de 15.154,74 ha. Esses resultados corroboram a hipótese de que a exploração dos recursos naturais na APA do Pratigi pode reduzir a biodiversidade devido à expansão das atividades agropecuárias. Portanto, novas políticas públicas e a implementação de medidas sustentáveis para mitigar os conflitos ambientais são necessárias para preservar processos ecológicos e ecossistêmicos na região.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate patients with arthrogryposis submitted to extensive surgical treatment with a minimum of 10 years of follow-up regarding the clinical and radiological aspects and the quality of life, using the 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) and the Disease-Specific Instrument (DSI). Methods: A retrospective study selected 33 patients, totaling 64 operated feet. Results: The mean age of the patients was 17.9 years (12-39 years), and the mean follow-up time was 14.8 years (11-17). Amyoplasia represented 78.7% of syndromic diagnoses. Isolated posteromedial lateral release (PMLR) was performed in 21.8% of the feet, 27.2% of which required additional bone surgery, and about 50 feet (78.1%) were submitted to PMLR, lateral column shortening, and/or talectomy. In total, 46 talectomies were performed (71.8% of the feet), out of which 44 were the first procedure of choice. SF-36 questionnaire was evaluated and showed that 93.9% of the patients did not have restrictive and disabling pain, and the same percentage considered themselves as healthy and had good expectations for the future. Conclusion: Arthrogrypotic feet are difficult to treat, require many recurrent surgical procedures, and relapses are the rule. Stiffness is a common feature of these feet, and residual deformities were frequent. Level of Evidence IV; Case Series, Therapeutic Studies.

ABSTRACT Species within the genus Corymbia are regarded as potential alternatives to Eucalyptus. In addition to having superior wood quality, Corymbia spp. are tolerant to most pests, diseases, and abiotic stresses that affecting Eucalyptus plantations, including physiological disorders, water deficit, and wind damage. However, environmental stresses stimulate kino production, which decreases the quality of pulp and sawn wood. This study aimed to develop a method for evaluating kinoand estimate genetic parameters in Corymbia. For this, 16 Corymbia (C. citriodora × C. torelliana) hybrid clones and 5 clones of Eucalyptus were used. Two evaluation methods (M1 and M2) were tested for kino evaluation; M1 consisted of drilling the bark with Pilodyn and M2 consisted of drilling the heartwood with Pilodyn. The following kino parameters were evaluated: exudation incidence, exudate length which flowed over the stem, and exudate weight. Genetic parameters were estimated by a mixed model method (REML/BLUP). The significance of random effects of the statistical model was tested by the likelihood ratio test. Significant clone effects were obtained for all kino parameters, except for exudate length as assessed by M2. Kino parameters determined by M1 exhibited higher heritability and accuracy. Therefore, M1 should be preferred for kino evaluation in Corymbia.
