Owing to their unique optical and electronic properties, vertical van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic applications, such as photodetection, light harvesting, and light-emitting diodes. To fully harness these properties, it is crucial to understand the interfacial charge transfer (CT) and recombination dynamics across vdWHs. However, the effects of interfacial energetics and defect states on interfacial CT and recombination processes in graphene-transition metal dichalcogenide (Gr-TMD) vdWHs remain debated. Here, we investigate the interfacial CT dynamics in Gr-TMD vdWHs with different chemical compositions (W, Mo, S, and Se) and tunable interfacial energetics. We demonstrate, using ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy, that while the photo-induced electron transfer direction is universal with graphene donating electrons to TMDs, its efficiency is chalcogen-dependent: the CT efficiency of S atom-based vdWHs is 3–5 times higher than that of Se-based vdWHs thanks to the lower Schottky barrier present in S-based vdWHs. In contrast, the electron back transfer process from TMD to Gr, which defines the charge separation time, is transition metal-dependent and dominated by the mid-gap defect level of TMDs: W transition metal-based vdWHs possess extremely long charge separation, well beyond 1 ns, which is significantly longer than Mo-based vdWHs with only 10 s of ps charge separation. This difference can be traced to the much deeper mid-gap defect reported in W-based TMDs compared to Mo-based ones, resulting in modified energetics for the back electron transfer from the trapped states to graphene. Our results shed light on the role of interfacial energetics and defects by tailoring chemical compositions of TMDs on the interfacial CT and recombination dynamics in Gr-TMD vdWHs, which is pivotal for optimizing optoelectronic devices, particularly in the field of photodetection. Unsaturated lipids with C=C groups in their alkyl chains are widely present in the cell membrane and food. The C=C groups alter the lipid packing density, membrane stability, and persistence against lipid oxidation. Yet, molecular-level insights into the structure of the unsaturated lipids remain scarce. Here, we probe the molecular structure and organization of monolayers of unsaturated lipids on the water surface using heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy. We vary the location of the C=C in the alkyl chain and find that at high lipid density, the location of the C=C group affects neither the interfacial water organization nor the tail of the alkyl chain. Based on this observation, we use the C=C stretch HD-SFG response to depth-profile the alkyl chain conformation of the unsaturated lipid. We find that the first 1/3 of carbon atoms from the headgroup are relatively rigid, oriented perpendicular to the surface. In contrast, the remaining carbon atoms can be approximated as free rotators, introducing the disordering of the alkyl chains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional terahertz–infrared–visible (2D TIRV) spectroscopy directly measures the coupling between quantum high-frequency vibrations and classical low-frequency modes of molecular motion. In addition to coupling strength, the signal intensity in 2D TIRV spectroscopy can also depend on the selection rules of the excited transitions. Here, we explore the selection rules in 2D TIRV spectroscopy by studying the coupling between the high-frequency CH3 stretching and low-frequency vibrations of liquid dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Different excitation pathways are addressed using variations in laser pulse timing and different polarizations of exciting pulses and detected signals. The DMSO signals generated via different excitation pathways can be readily distinguished in the spectrum. The intensities of different excitation pathways vary unequally with changes in polarization. We explain how this difference stems from the intensities of polarized and depolarized Raman and hyper-Raman spectra of high-frequency modes. Tardigrades are unique micro‐organisms with a high tolerance to desiccation. The protection of their cells against desiccation involves tardigrade‐specific proteins, which include the so‐called cytoplasmic abundant heat soluble (CAHS) proteins. As a first step towards the design of peptides capable of mimicking the cytoprotective properties of CAHS proteins, we have synthesized several model peptides with sequences selected from conserved CAHS motifs and investigated to what extent they exhibit the desiccation‐induced structural changes of the full‐length proteins. Using circular dichroism spectroscopy, two‐dimensional infrared spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, we have found that the CAHS model peptides are mostly disordered, but adopt a more α$$ \alpha $$‐helical structure upon addition of 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol, which mimics desiccation. This structural behavior is similar to that of full‐length CAHS proteins, which also adopt more ordered conformations upon desiccation. We also have investigated the surface activity of the peptides at the air/water interface, which also mimics partial desiccation. Interestingly, sum‐frequency generation spectroscopy shows that all model peptides are surface active and adopt a helical structure at the air/water interface. Our results suggest that amino acids with high helix‐forming propensities might contribute to the propensity of these peptides to adopt a helical structure when fully or partially dehydrated. Thus, the selected sequences retain part of the CAHS structural behavior upon desiccation, and might be used as a basis for the design of new synthetic peptide‐based cryoprotective materials. Near‐infrared (NIR) fluorophores are highly desirable for super‐resolution fluorescence microscopy; however, their optical properties are typically relatively poor, with low photo‐intensity (mean photon number below 1000), and unfavorably high on‐off blinking duty cycle. In this work, the synthesis and characterization of tetrabenzodinaphthopyranthren (TBDNP) derivative as a novel nanographene that exhibits NIR emission in the range of 800–1000 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 14% are reported. TBDNP demonstrated excellent self‐blinking properties, in particular, mean photon number of >3000 and a low on–off‐duty cycle (≈10−4), which are superior to reported NIR dyes, and can be successfully employed for the NIR super‐resolution imaging. Moreover, TBDNP serves also as a chiral fluorophore, showing notable chiroptical activities from 300 to 850 nm with a high dissymmetry factor (gabs) of 0.032 at 574 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A critical step in photocatalytic water dissociation is the hole‐mediated oxidation reaction. Molecular‐level insights into the mechanism of this complex reaction under realistic conditions with high temporal resolution are highly desirable. Here, we use femtosecond time‐resolved, surface‐specific vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy to study the photo‐induced reaction directly at the interface of the photocatalyst TiO2 in contact with liquid water at room temperature. Thanks to the inherent surface specificity of the spectroscopic method, we can follow the reaction of solely the interfacial water molecules directly at the interface at timescales on which the reaction takes place. Following the generation of holes at the surface immediately after photoexcitation of the catalyst with UV light, water dissociation occurs on a sub‐20 ps timescale. The reaction mechanism is similar at pH 3 and 11. In both cases, we observe the conversion of H2O into Ti−OH groups and the deprotonation of pre‐existing Ti−OH groups. This study provides unique experimental insights into the early steps of the photo‐induced dissociation processes at the photocatalyst‐water interface, relevant to the design of improved photocatalysts. Memristive devices, electrical elements whose resistance depends on the history of applied electrical signals, are leading candidates for future data storage and neuromorphic computing. Memristive devices typically rely on solid-state technology, while aqueous memristive devices are crucial for biology-related applications such as next-generation brain-machine interfaces. Here, we report a simple graphene-based aqueous memristive device with long-term and tunable memory regulated by reversible voltage-induced interfacial acid-base equilibria enabled by selective proton permeation through the graphene. Surface-specific vibrational spectroscopy verifies that the memory of the graphene resistivity arises from the hysteretic proton permeation through the graphene, apparent from the reorganization of interfacial water at the graphene/water interface. The proton permeation alters the surface charge density on the CaF2 substrate of the graphene, affecting graphene’s electron mobility, and giving rise to synapse-like resistivity dynamics. The results pave the way for developing experimentally straightforward and conceptually simple aqueous electrolyte-based neuromorphic iontronics using two-dimensional (2D) materials. Studying lipid monolayers as model biological membranes, we demonstrate that water molecules interfacing with different model membranes can display preferential orientation for two distinct reasons: due to charges on the membrane, and due to large dipole fields resulting from zwitterionic headgroups. This preferential water orientation caused by the charge or the dipolar field can be effectively neutralized to net-zero water orientation by introducing monolayer counter-charges (i.e. lipids with oppositely charged headgroups). Following the Gouy–Chapman model, the effect of monolayer surface charge on water orientation is furthermore strongly dependent on the electrolyte concentration and thus on the counterions in solution. In contrast, the effect of ions in the subphase on the dipolar alignment of water is zero. As a result, the capability of monolayer counter-charges to null the effect of dipolar orientation is strongly electrolyte-dependent. Notably, the different effects are additive for mixed charged/zwitterionic lipid systems occurring in nature. Specifically, for an E. coli lipid membrane extract consisting of both zwitterionic and negatively charged lipids, the water orientation can be explained by the sum of the constituents. Our results can be quantitatively reproduced using Gouy–Chapman theory, revealing the relatively straightforward electrostatic effects on the hydration of complex membrane interfaces. Water at interfaces is a fascinating and multifaceted topic that has garnered significant attention in various scientific fields due to its relevance and implications. This Faraday Discussion explored the complexity of water at different interfaces. Many of the reports highlight the need for a molecular-level understanding. The Discussion was lively and constructive. In these summarizing remarks, I do not aim to be complete, but will rather try to sketch the status of the field, highlight the progress that we as a community have made, and present eclectic examples of where more work needs to be done. Graphene, a transparent two-dimensional (2D) conductive electrode, has brought extensive new perspectives and prospects to electrochemical systems, such as chemical sensors, energy storage, and energy conversion devices. In many of these applications, graphene, supported on a substrate, is in contact with an aqueous solution. An increasing number of studies indicate that the substrate, rather than graphene, determines the organization of water in contact with graphene, i.e., the electric double layer (EDL) structure near the electrified graphene, and the wetting behavior of the graphene: the graphene sheet is transparent in terms of its supporting substrate. By applying surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy to the silicon dioxide (SiO2)-supported graphene electrode/aqueous electrolyte interface and comparing the data with those for the calcium fluoride (CaF2)-supported graphene [Y. Wang et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2023, 62, e202216604], we discuss the impact of the different substrates on the charging of both the graphene and the substrate upon applying potentials. The SiO2-supported graphene shows pseudocapacitive behavior, consistent with the CaF2-supported graphene case, although the surface charges on SiO2 and CaF2 differ substantially. The SiO2 surface is already negatively charged at +0.57 V (vs. Pd/H2), and the negative surface charge is doubled when negative potentials are applied, in contrast with the CaF2 case, where the positive charge is reduced when negative potentials are applied. Interestingly, the charging of the graphene sheet is almost identical between the negatively charged SiO2 surface and positively charged CaF2 surface, demonstrating that the graphene charging is decoupled from the charging of the substrates. All-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites have gained significant attention due to their potential in direct X-ray detection. The fabrication of stable, pinhole-free thick films remains challenging, hindering their integration in durable, large-area high-resolution devices. In this study, we propose a facile strategy using a non-conductive polymer to create a flexible, compact thick film under ambient conditions. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of introducing the 2D CsPb2Br5 phase into CsPbBr3 perovskite crystals on their photophysical properties and charge transport. Upon X-ray exposure, the devices consisting of the dual phase exhibit improved stability and more effective operation at higher voltages. Rietveld refinement shows that, due to the presence of the second phase, local distortions and Pb-vacancies are introduced within the CsPbBr3 lattice. This in turn presumably increases the ion migration energy barrier, resulting in a very low dark current and hence, enhanced stability. This feature might benefit local charge extraction and, ultimately, the X-ray image resolution. These findings also suggest that introducing a second phase in the perovskite structure can be advantageous for efficient photon-to-charge carrier conversion, as applied in medical imaging.
