Nanoparticles as substitutes for antibiotics were proven to possess substantial abilities for tackling MRB infections via new antimicrobial mechanisms. Particularly, carbon dots (CDs) with unique (bio)physicochemical characteristics have been receiving considerable attention in combating MRB by damaging the bacterial wall, binding to DNA or enzymes, inducing hyperthermia locally, or forming reactive oxygen species. Methods: Herein, how the physicochemical features of various CDs affect their antimicrobial capacity is investigated with the assistance of machine learning (ML) tools. Results: The synthetic conditions and intrinsic properties of CDs from 121 samples are initially gathered to form the raw dataset, with Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) being the output. Four classification algorithms (KNN, SVM, RF, and XGBoost) are trained and validated with the input data. It is found that the ensemble learning methods turn out to be the best on our data. Also, ϵ-poly(L-lysine) CDs (PL-CDs) were developed to validate the practical application ability of the well-trained ML models in a laboratory with two ensemble models managing the prediction.Discussion: Thus, our results demonstrate that ML-based high-throughput theoretical calculation could be used to predict and decode the relationship between CD properties and the anti-bacterial effect, accelerating the development of high-performance nanoparticles and potential clinical translation. This exploratory subgroup analysis aimed to explore the effects of acupuncture as an add-on therapy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for patients with AD or non-anxious depression (NAD).Patients and Methods: Four hundred and sixty-five patients with moderate-to-severe depression from the AcuSDep pragmatic trial were included in analysis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive MA+SSRIs, EA+SSRIs, or SSRIs alone (1:1:1) for six weeks. AD was defined by using dimensional criteria. The measurement instruments included 17-items Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Rating Scale for Side Effects (SERS), and WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF). Comparison between AD and NAD subgroups and comparisons between groups within either AD or NAD subgroups were conducted. Results: Eighty percent of the patients met the criteria for AD. The AD subgroup had poorer clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes compared to those of the NAD subgroup. For AD patients, the HAMD response rate, remission rate, early onset rate, and the score changes on each scale at most measurement points on the two acupuncture groups were significantly better than the SSRIs group. For NAD patients, the HAMD early onset rates of the two acupuncture groups were significantly better than the SSRIs group. Conclusion: For AD subtype patients, either MA or EA add-on SSRIs showed comprehensive improvements, with small-to-medium effect sizes. For NAD subtype patients, both the add-on acupuncture could accelerate the response to SSRIs treatment. The study contributed to the existing literature by providing insights into the potential benefits of acupuncture in combination with SSRIs, especially for patients with AD subtypes. Due to its limited nature as a post hoc subgroup analysis, prospectively designed, high-quality trials are warranted.Clinical Trials Registration: ChiCTR-TRC-08000297.Keywords: anxious depression, non-anxious depression, acupuncture, SSRIs, subgroup analysis

Peripheral refractive errors were measured using multispectral retinal refractive topography (MRT). Spherical equivalent (SE) and cylinder errors were classified into low, moderate, and high categories based on the magnitude range. Logistic regression was performed to test the factors associated with myopia. Results: There were 152 participants with low myopia and 168 participants with moderate and high myopia included in the current study. Participants with moderate and high myopia were most likely to be older, with larger axial length (AL), lower SE, less time to watch electronic devices on the weekend, a higher difference between central refractive error and paracentral refractive error from the superior side of the retina (RDV-S), but a smaller difference between the central refractive error and paracentral refractive error from the inferior side of the retina (RDV-I) than those with low myopia (all P < 0.05). After logistic analysis, female sex (odds ratio [OR] = 4.14; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.16– 7.97, P < 0.001), AL (OR = 6.88, 95% CI = 4.33– 10.93, P < 0.001), and RDV-I (OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.32– 0.86, P = 0.010) were independent factors for moderate and high myopia. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that the retina peripheral refraction of the eyes (RDV-I) was associated with moderate and high myopia, and RDV-S was only associated with high myopia. Keywords: peripheral refractive errors, myopia, spherical equivalent, logistic analysis, ocular biometrics

Abstract The epidemiology of vertebral fractures (VF) in underrepresented populations is not well-documented. This cohort study was part of a longitudinal osteoporosis research project with the aim of determining the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for VF. 401 individuals (155 men) aged 50 years and older without a clinical diagnosis of VF were took radiographs at baseline and 2 years later. VF were ascertained using the Genant's semi-quantitative method. Bone mineral density (BMD) of femoral neck and lumbar spine were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (Hologic Inc). The association between VF and risk factors was analyzed by the multiple logistic regression. The 95% confidence interval for prevalence and incidence was estimated by exact Poisson test. At baseline, the prevalence of VF was 12.2% (n = 49, 95% CI 9.0–16.2%) and increased with advancing age with one-fifth of those aged 70 and older having a VF. During the follow-up period, we observed 6 new VF, making the incidence of 6.6/1000 person-years (n = 6, 95% CI 2.4–14.3). The risk of prevalent VF was associated with male gender (OR: 2.67; 95% CI 1.28–5.87) and T-score at the femoral neck (OR per one SD decrease: 1.1; 1.03–1.17). These data indicate that VF is common among adults, and that lower femoral neck BMD was a risk factor for VF.

Synthetic antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) are emerging as an attractive platform to treat various diseases. By specifically binding to a target mRNA transcript through Watson–Crick base pairing, ASOs can alter gene expression in a desirable fashion to either rescue loss of function or downregulate pathogenic protein expression. To be clinically relevant, ASOs are generally synthesized using modified analogs to enhance resistance to enzymatic degradation and pharmacokinetic and dynamic properties. Phosphorothioate (PS) belongs to the first generation of modified analogs and has played a vital role in the majority of approved ASO drugs, mainly based on the RNase H mechanism. In contrast to RNase H-dependent ASOs that bind and cleave target mature mRNA, splice-switching oligonucleotides (SSOs) mainly bind and alter precursor mRNA splicing in the cell nucleus. To date, only one approved SSO (Nusinersen) possesses a PS backbone. Typically, the synthesis of PS oligonucleotides generates two types of stereoisomers that could potentially impact the ASO’s pharmaco-properties. This can be limited by introducing the naturally occurring phosphodiester (PO) linkage to the ASO sequence. In this study, towards fine-tuning the current strategy in designing SSOs, we reported the design, synthesis, and evaluation of several stereo-random SSOs on a mixed PO–PS backbone for their binding affinity, biological potency, and nuclease stability. Based on the results, we propose that a combination of PO and PS linkages could represent a promising approach toward limiting undesirable stereoisomers while not largely compromising the efficacy of SSOs.

Typically, the synthesis of PS oligonucleotides generates two types of stereoisomers that could potentially impact the ASO's pharmaco-properties. This work concerns Ekeland variational principles for scalar and vector cyclically antimonotone bifunctions on complete metric spaces. The scalar results work for extended bifunctions and they are obtained by a generalized version of the Dancs–Hegedüs–Medvegyev's fixed point theorem. As a result, weaker lower-semicontinuity assumptions have been considered, that generalize the concept of strictly decreasingly lower-semicontinuous real-valued function. The vector results are derived from the previous ones by a scalarization approach and are based on new notions of cyclical antimonotonicity, lower boundedness and strictly decreasingly lower-semicontinuity for vector bifunctions. Several results in the literature are improved since they are stated by weaker assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Laboratory-evolved RNAs bind a wide variety of targets and serve highly diverse functions, including as diagnostic and therapeutic aptamers. The majority of aptamers have been identified using in vitroselection (SELEX), a molecular evolution technique based on selecting target-binding RNAs from highly diverse pools through serial rounds of enrichment and amplification. In vitroselection typically yields multiple distinct motifs of highly variable abundance and target-binding affinities. The discovery of new aptamers is often limited by the difficulty of characterizing the selected motifs, because testing of individual sequences tends to be a tedious process. To facilitate the discovery of new aptamers within in vitroselected pools, we developed Apta-Seq, a multiplex analysis based on quantitative, ligand-dependent 2′ acylation of solvent-accessible regions of the selected RNA pools, followed by reverse transcription (SHAPE) and deep sequencing. The method reveals, in a single sequencing experiment, the identity, structural features, and target dissociation constants for aptamers present in the selected pool. Application of Apta-Seq to a human genomic pool enriched for ATP-binding RNAs yielded three new aptamers, which together with previously identified human aptamers suggest that ligand-binding RNAs may be common in mammals.

- Abstract
Background: Hot flashes are a common side effect of endocrine therapy (ET) that contribute to poor quality of life and decreased treatment adherence., Methods: Patients with breast cancer wo were receiving ET and experiencing hot flashes were enrolled through three parallel, randomized trials conducted in the United States, China, and South Korea. Participants were randomized to either immediate acupuncture (IA) or delayed acupuncture control (DAC). IA participants received 20 acupuncture sessions over 10 weeks, whereas DAC participants received usual care, then crossed over to acupuncture with a reduced intensity. The primary end point was a change in score on the endocrine symptom subscale of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT)-Endocrine Symptoms between baseline and week 10. Secondary end points included the hot flash score and the FACT-Breast score. A planned pooled analysis of individual patient data was performed using longitudinal mixed models., Results: In total, 158 women with stage 0-III breast cancer were randomized (United States, n = 78; China, n = 40; South Korea, n = 40). At week 10, IA participants reported statistically significant improvements in the endocrine symptom subscale score (mean change ± standard error: 5.1 ± 0.9 vs. 0.2 ± 1.0; p = .0003), the hot flash score (-5.3 ± 0.9 vs. -1.4 ± 0.9; p < .003), and the FACT-Breast total score (8.0 ± 1.6 vs. -0.01 ± 1.6; p = .0005) compared with DAC participants. The effect of the acupuncture intervention differed by site (p = .005)., Conclusions: Acupuncture led to statistically and clinically meaningful improvements in hot flashes, endocrine symptoms, and breast cancer-specific quality of life in women undergoing ET for breast cancer in the United States, China, and South Korea., (© 2024 American Cancer Society.)

- Abstract
Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is prone to relapse due to the lack of effective therapeutic targets. Macrophages are the most abundant immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of breast cancer. Targeting the cross-talk between macrophages and cancer cells provides a more efficient strategy for anti-tumor therapy. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are important players involved in macrophage activation, and TLR agonists are known to play roles in cancer therapy. However, the combination strategy of TLR agonists with chemotherapy drugs is still not well characterized., Methods: RT-PCR and Western blot were used to detect the expression of TLRs. The communication between breast cancer cells and macrophages were determined by co-culture in vitro. Tumor cells proliferation and migration were investigated by MTT assay and scratch wound assay. The effects of drug combinations and toxic side effects were assessed by immunohistochemistry and Hematoxylin & Eosin staining., Results: Expression of TLR3 and TLR4 were lower in breast tumor tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues. Patients with higher TLR3 or TLR4 expression levels had a better prognosis than those with lower expression levels. TLR3/4 expression was significantly inhibited when breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231 and E0771 were conditioned-cultured with macrophages in vitro and was also inhibited by pirarubicin (THP). However, the combination of TLR agonists and THP could reverse this response and inhibit the proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells. Additionally, this combination significantly reduced the tumor volume and weight in the murine model, increased the expression of TLR3/4 in mouse breast tumors., Conclusions: Our results provide new ideas for the combination strategy of THP with TLR agonists which improves prognosis of breast cancer., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is among the most widely planted and economically valuable horticultural crops globally. Over time, the apple fruit's cut surface undergoes browning, and the degree of browning varies among different apple varieties. Browning not only affects the appearance of fruits but also adversely affects their taste and flavor. In the present study, we observed browning in different apple varieties over time and analyzed the expression of genes in the polyphenol oxidase gene family. The results indicated a strong correlation between the browning degree of the fruit and the relative expression of the polyphenol oxidase gene MdPPO2. With the MdPPO2 promoter as bait, the basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor MdbZIP44 was identified using the yeast single-hybrid screening method. Further investigation revealed that the overexpression of MdbZIP44 in 'Orin' callus could enhance the expression of MdPPO2 and promote browning of the callus. However, knocking out MdbZIP44 resulted in a callus with no apparent browning phenotype. In addition, our results confirmed the interaction between MdbZIP44 and MdbZIP11. In conclusion, the results indicated that MdbZIP44 can induce apple fruit browning by activating the MdPPO2 promoter. The results provide a theoretical basis for further clarifying the browning mechanism of apple fruit., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest All authors have no competing financial interests to declare., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. - Abstract
Realizing large materials models has emerged as a critical endeavor for materials research in the new era of artificial intelligence, but how to achieve this fantastic and challenging objective remains elusive. Here, we propose a feasible pathway to address this paramount pursuit by developing universal materials models of deep-learning density functional theory Hamiltonian (DeepH), enabling computational modeling of the complicated structure-property relationship of materials in general. By constructing a large materials database and substantially improving the DeepH method, we obtain a universal materials model of DeepH capable of handling diverse elemental compositions and material structures, achieving remarkable accuracy in predicting material properties. We further showcase a promising application of fine-tuning universal materials models for enhancing specific materials models. This work not only demonstrates the concept of DeepH's universal materials model but also lays the groundwork for developing large materials models, opening up significant opportunities for advancing artificial intelligence-driven materials discovery., (Copyright © 2024 Science China Press. - Abstract
The fascinating scent of rose (Rosa genus) flowers has captivated human senses for centuries, making them one of the most popular and widely used floral fragrances. Despite much progress over the last decade, many biochemical pathways responsible for rose scents remain unclear. We analyzed the floral scent compositions from various rose varieties and selected the modern cultivar Rosa hybrida 'Double Delight' as a model system to unravel the formation of rose dominant volatile terpenes, which contribute substantially to the rose fragrance. Key genes involved in rose terpene biosynthesis were functionally characterized. Cytosolic geranyl diphosphate (GPP) generated by geranyl/farnesyl diphosphate synthase (G/FPPS1) catalysis, played a pivotal role in rose scent production, and terpene synthases (TPSs) in roses play an important role in the formation of most volatile terpenes, but not for geraniol, citral or β-citronellol. Subsequently, a series of enzymes, including geraniol dehydrogenase (GeDH), geranial reductase (GER), 12-oxophytodienoate reductase (OPR) and citronellal reductase (CAR), were characterized as involved in the transformation of geraniol to β-citronellol in roses through three successive steps. Interestingly, the β-citronellol biosynthesis pathway appears to be conserved in other horticultural plants like Lagerstroemia caudata and Paeonia lactiflora. Our findings provide valuable insights into the biosynthesis of rose volatile terpenoid compounds and offer essential gene resources for future breeding and molecular modification efforts., (© The Author(s) 2024. - Abstract
Photocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (PNRR) offers a promising strategy for sustainable production of ammonia (NH3). However, the reported photocatalysts suffer from low efficiency with great room to improve regarding the charge carrier utilization and active site engineering. Herein, a porous and chemically bonded heterojunction photocatalyst is developed for efficient PNRR to NH3 production via hybridization of two semiconducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-125-NH2 (MIL=Material Institute Lavoisier) and Co-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytripehenylene). Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate the formation of Ti-O-Co chemical bonds at the interface, which not only serve as atomic pathway for S-scheme charge transfer, but also provide electron-deficient Co centers for improving N2 chemisorption/activation capability and restricting competitive hydrogen evolution. Moreover, the nanoporous structure allows the transportation of reactants to the interfacial active sites at heterojunction, enabling the efficient utilization of charge carriers. Consequently, the rationally designed MOF-based heterojunction exhibits remarkable PNRR performance with an NH3 production rate of 2.1 mmol g-1 h-1, an apparent quantum yield (AQY) value of 16.2% at 365 nm and a solar-to-chemical conversion (SCC) efficiency of 0.28%, superior to most reported PNRR photocatalysts. Our work provides new insights into the design principles of high-performance photocatalysts., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

- Abstract
Prussian blue analogues (PBA) are a large family of functional materials with diverse applications such as in electrochemical fields. However, their use in the emerging two-electron oxygen reduction reaction for clean production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is lagging. Herein, a general solvent exchange induced reconstruction strategy is demonstrated, through which an abnormal NiNi-PBA superstructure is synthesized as a high-performance electrocatalyst for H2O2 generation. The resultant NiNi-PBA superstructure has a stoichiometric composition with saturated lattice water, and a leaf-like morphology composed of interconnected small-size nanosheets with identical orientation and predominate {210} side surface exposure. Our studies show that the Ni-N centers on {210} facets are the active sites, and the saturated lattice H2O favors a six-coordinated environment that results in high selectivity. The "perfect" structure including stoichiometric composition and ideal facet exposure leads to a high selectivity of ~100% and H2O2 yield of 5.7 mol g-1 h-1, superior to the reported MOF-based electrocatalysts and most other electrocatalysts., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Background: Congenital pneumonia is a common respiratory disease in newborns, often influenced by obstetric factors. Clinical diagnosis can be delayed, prompting interest in using systemic inflammatory indicators to predict various diseases., Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the predictive value of maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery for congenital pneumonia in newborns., Methods: This retrospective study included full-term, singleton infants born at the Affiliated Huaian No. 1 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between January 2017 and December 2022. Infants admitted to the neonatal department within 48 h of birth were divided into two groups: 46 with clinical congenital pneumonia (the observation group) and 65 without congenital pneumonia (the control group). Maternal peripheral blood, complete blood cell count, and general condition within 72 h before delivery, as well as neonatal admission data were recorded. Systemic inflammatory indicators were assessed. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the predictive value of the maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery for congenital pneumonia. A prediction model for neonatal pneumonia was constructed by combining systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery with logistic regression. The association between this prediction model and the prognosis of neonatal congenital pneumonia was examined., Results: Maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery as predictive markers for congenital pneumonia and the regression model jointly constructed by NLR, MLR, SII, SIRI, and PIV before delivery predicted the occurrence of congenital pneumonia better. Maternal systemic inflammatory indicators correlated with the severity of congenital pneumonia in neonates., Conclusions: Maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery have predictive value for congenital pneumonia in neonates, aiding early identification and treatment.

- Abstract
Methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) plays a role in the development of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, the mechanism underlying the role of METTL3 in KOA is unclear. This work investigated the effects of MELLT3 on ferroptosis and pain relief in in vitro and in vivo KOA models. Chondrocytes were treated with 10 ng/mL interleukin-1β (IL-1β) or 5 μM Erastin (ferroptosis inducer). IL-1β or Erastin treatment inhibited cell viability and glutathione levels; increased Fe
2+ , lipid reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde production; and decreased glutathione peroxidase 4, ferritin light chain and solute carrier family 7 member 11 levels. The overexpression of METTL3 facilitated the N6-methyladenosine methylation of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1). HMGB1 overexpression reversed the effect of sh-METTL3 on IL-1β-treated chondrocytes. A KOA rat model was established by the injection of monosodium iodoacetate into the joints and successful model establishment was confirmed by haematoxylin and eosin staining and Safranin O/Fast Green staining. METTL3 depletion alleviated cartilage damage, the inflammatory response, ferroptosis and knee pain in KOA model rats, and these effects were reversed by the addition of HMGB1. In conclusion, METTL3 depletion inhibited ferroptosis and the inflammatory response, and ameliorated cartilage damage and knee pain during KOA progression by regulating HMGB1., (© 2024 International Federation for Cell Biology.)- Published

- Abstract
In an effort to pursue a green synthesis approach, the biosynthesis of nano-silver (nAg) using plant extracts has garnered significant attention, particularly for its antimicrobial resistance and medical applications, which have been the focus of numerous studies. However, there remains a gap in surface catalytic studies, especially regarding the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol. While some studies have addressed catalytic kinetics, thermodynamic aspects have been largely overlooked, leaving the catalytic mechanisms of biosynthesized nAg unclear. In this context, the present work offers a straightforward, eco-friendly, and efficient protocol to obtain nano-silver inspired by Musa paradisiaca L. peel extract. This nAg serves multiple purposes, including antimicrobial resistance and as an eco-catalyst for hydrogenation. Predominantly consisting of zero-valent silver with anisotropic polyhedral shapes, mainly decahedra with an edge length of 50 nm, this nAg demonstrated effective antimicrobial action against both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. More importantly, both kinetic and thermodynamic studies on the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol catalyzed by this bio-inspired nAg revealed that the rate-limiting step is not diffusion-limited. Instead, the adsorbed hydrogen and 4-nitrophenolate react together via electron transfer on the surface of the nAg. The activation energy of 26.24 kJ mol

- Abstract
The study investigated the distributions of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Pb) between dissolved fraction (<0.7 µm) and particles (>0.7 µm) during the adsorption process. The dissolved fraction was further separated into truly dissolved (<3 kDa) and colloidal (3 kDa-0.7 µm) fractions. Significant metal adsorption occurred on the colloids, resulting in their aggregation into particles, which in turn influenced the particle adsorption kinetics. Colloids could either accelerate or inhibit the transformation of metal ions into particulates, depending on their stability. Competitive metals for colloids (Pb and Cr) were more susceptible to the effects of colloids than other elements. DOM was the predominant environmental factor influencing colloid behavior. The XDLVO theory showed that DOM enhanced the negative charge of colloids and made the colloid surface more hydrophilic, inhibiting the aggregation of colloids. DOM resulted in substantial increases in the concentrations of colloidal Pb and Cr from 0.31 μg/L and 4.58 μg/L to 20.52 μg/L and 43.51 μg/L, respectively, whereas the increment for less competitive metals (Cd and Mn) was smaller. These findings suggest that the distribution of heavy metals is influenced not only by adsorption from particles and ions but also by the complex dynamics of colloids., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The activation of PMS to produce active species is an attractive technique for antibiotic degradation but is restricted to the low reaction kinetics and high costs. In this work, a cobalt-based catalyst was prepared by in situ electrodeposition to enhance the electrically activated PMS process for the degradation of antibiotics. Almost 100% of pefloxacin (PFX) was removed within 10 min by employing Co(OH)
2 as the catalyst in the electrically activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process, and the reaction kinetic constant reached 0.52 min-1 . The redox processes of Co2+ and Co3+ in Co(OH)2 catalysts were considered to be the main pathways for PMS activation, in which1 O2 was the main active species. Furthermore, this strategy could also achieve excellent degradation efficiency for other organic pollutants. This study provides an effective and low-cost strategy with no secondary pollution for pollutant degradation.- Published

- Abstract
Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating side effect of neurotoxic chemotherapy. Exercise activates neuromuscular function and may improve CIPN. We examined the association between exercise and CIPN symptoms in breast cancer survivors., Methods: In a retrospective cross-sectional study, we included patients completing a survey assessing exercise exposure and neuropathy symptoms in a tertiary cancer center survivorship clinic. We evaluated exercise duration and intensity using a standardized questionnaire quantified in metabolic equivalent tasks (MET-h/wk). We defined exercisers as patients meeting the National Physical Activity Guidelines' criteria. We used multivariable logistic regressions to examine the relationship between exercise and CIPN and if this differed as a function of chemotherapy regimen adjusting for age, gender, and race., Results: We identified 5444 breast cancer survivors post-chemotherapy (median age 62 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 55, 71); median 4.7 years post-chemotherapy (IQR: 3.3, 7.6)) from 2017 to 2022. CIPN overall prevalence was 34% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 33%, 36%), 33% for non-taxane, and 37% for taxane-based chemotherapy. CIPN prevalence was 28% (95% CI: 26%, 30%) among exercisers and 38% (95% CI: 37%, 40%) among non-exercisers (difference 11%; 95% CI: 8%, 13%; p < 0.001). Compared to patients with low (<6 MET-h/wk) levels of exercise (42%), 11% fewer patients with moderate (6-20.24 MET-h/wk) to high (>20.25 MET-h/wk) levels of exercise reported CIPN. Exercise was associated with reduced prevalence of all CIPN symptoms regardless of chemotherapy type., Conclusion: CIPN may persist several years following chemotherapy among patients with breast cancer but is significantly reduced by exercise in a dose-dependent manner., (© 2024. - Abstract
Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disorder predominantly affecting preterm infants. Oxygen therapy, a common treatment for BPD, often leads to hyperoxia-induced pulmonary damage, particularly targeting alveolar epithelial cells (AECs). Crucially, disrupted lung epithelium-fibroblast interactions significantly contribute to BPD's pathogenesis. Previous studies on interleukin-11 (IL-11) in lung diseases have yielded conflicting results. Recent research, however, highlights IL-11 as a key regulator of fibrosis, stromal inflammation, and epithelial dysfunction. Despite this, the specific role of IL-11 in BPD remains underexplored. Our transcriptome analysis of normal and hyperoxia-exposed murine lung tissues revealed an increased expression of IL-11 RNA. This study aimed to investigate IL-11's role in modulating the disrupted interactions between AECs and fibroblasts in BPD., Methods: BPD was modeled in vivo by exposing C57BL/6J neonatal mice to hyperoxia. Histopathological changes in lung tissue were evaluated with hematoxylin-eosin staining, while lung fibrosis was assessed using Masson staining and immunohistochemistry (IHC). To investigate IL-11's role in pulmonary injury contributing to BPD, IL-11 levels were reduced through intraperitoneal administration of IL-11RαFc in hyperoxia-exposed mice. Additionally, MLE-12 cells subjected to 95% oxygen were collected and co-cultured with mouse pulmonary fibroblasts (MPFs) to measure α-SMA and Collagen I expression levels. IL-11 levels in the supernatants were quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)., Results: Both IHC and Masson staining revealed that inhibiting IL-11 expression alleviated pulmonary fibrosis in neonatal mice induced by hyperoxia, along with reducing the expression of fibrosis markers α-SMA and collagen I in lung tissue. In vitro analysis showed a significant increase in IL-11 levels in the supernatant of MLE-12 cells treated with hyperoxia. Silencing IL-11 expression in MLE-12 cells reduced α-SMA and collagen I concentrations in MPFs co-cultured with the supernatant of hyperoxia-treated MLE-12 cells. Additionally, ERK inhibitors decreased α-SMA and collagen I levels in MPFs co-cultured with the supernatant of hyperoxia-treated MLE-12 cells. Clinical studies found increased IL-11 levels in tracheal aspirates (TA) of infants with BPD., Conclusion: This research reveals that hyperoxia induces IL-11 secretion in lung epithelium. Additionally, IL-11 derived from lung epithelium emerged as a crucial mediator in myofibroblast differentiation via the ERK signaling pathway, highlighting its potential therapeutic value in BPD treatment., (© 2024. - Abstract
Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) is an important route for sustainable NH3 synthesis and environmental remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one family of promising NO3-RR electrocatalysts, however, there is plenty of room to improve in their performance, calling for new design principles. Herein, a MOF-on-MOF heterostructured electrocatalyst with interfacial dual active sites and build-in electric field is fabricated for efficient NO3-RR to NH3 production. By growing Co-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) nanorods on Ni-BDC (BDC=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) nanosheets, experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate the formation of Ni-O-Co bonds at the interface of MOF-on-MOF heterostructure, leading to dual active sites tailed for NO3-RR. The Ni sites facilitate the adsorption and activation of NO3-, while the Co sites boost the H2O decomposition to supply active hydrogen (Hads) for N-containing intermediates hydrogenation on adjacent Ni sites, cooperatively reducing the energy barriers of NO3-RR process. Together with the accelerated electron transfer enabled by built-in electric field, remarkable NO3-RR performance is achieved with an NH3 yield rate of 11.46 mg h-1 cm-2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 98.4%, outperforming most reported MOF-based electrocatalysts. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance NO3-RR electrocatalysts., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

- Abstract
Accurate and prompt determination of fire types is essential for effective firefighting and reducing damage. However, traditional methods such as smoke detection, visual analysis, and wireless signals are not able to identify fire types. This paper introduces FireSonic, an acoustic sensing system that leverages commercial speakers and microphones to actively probe the fire using acoustic signals, effectively identifying fire types. By incorporating beamforming technology, FireSonic first enhances signal clarity and reliability, thus mitigating signal attenuation and distortion. To establish a reliable correlation between fire type and sound propagation, FireSonic quantifies the heat release rate (HRR) of flames by analyzing the relationship between fire-heated areas and sound wave propagation delays. Furthermore, the system extracts spatiotemporal features related to fire from channel measurements. The experimental results demonstrate that FireSonic attains an average fire type classification accuracy of 95.5% and a detection latency of less than 400 ms, satisfying the requirements for real-time monitoring. This system significantly enhances the formulation of targeted firefighting strategies, boosting fire response effectiveness and public safety.

- Abstract
Unicystic ameloblastoma (UAM) of the jaw can be effectively reduced in volume through decompression, which promotes bone regeneration and restores jaw symmetry. This study quantitatively evaluated changes in mandible volume and symmetry following decompression of mandibular UAM. This study included 17 patients who underwent surgical decompression followed by second-stage curettage for mandibular UAM. Preoperative and postoperative three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) images were collected. Bone volume and the area of cortical perforation were measured to assess bone growth during decompression. Mandibular volumetric symmetry was analyzed by calculating the volumetric ratio of the two sides of the mandible. Twelve pairs of landmarks were identified on the surface of the lesion regions, and their coordinates were used to calculate the mean asymmetry index (AI) of the mandible. Paired t-tests and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis, with p < 0.05 considered indicative of statistical significance. The mean duration of decompression was 9.41 ± 3.28 months. The mean bone volume increased by 8.07 ± 2.41%, and cortical perforation recovery was 71.97 ± 14.99%. The volumetric symmetry of the mandible improved significantly (p < 0.05), and a statistically significant decrease in AI was observed (p < 0.05). In conclusion, UAM decompression enhances bone growth and symmetry recovery of the mandible. The present evaluation technique is clinically useful for quantitatively assessing mandibular asymmetry., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

- Abstract
Background: MicroRNA (miRNA) emerges as important cancer biomarker, accurate detection of miRNA plays an essential role in clinical sample analysis and disease diagnosis. However, it remains challenging to realize highly sensitive detection of low-abundance miRNA. Traditional detection methods including northern blot and real-time PCR have realized quantitative miRNA detection. However, these detection methods are involved in sophisticated operation and expensive instruments. Therefore, the development of novel sensing platform with high sensitivity and specificity for miRNA detection is urgently demanded for disease diagnosis., Results: In this work, a novel electrochemical biosensor was constructed for miRNA detection based on target-driven cascade amplified assembly of electroactive covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on tetrahedral DNA nanostructure with multiplex recognition domains (m-TDN). COFs were employed as nanocarriers of electroactive prussian blue (PB) molecules by the "freeze-drying-reduction" method without the use of DNA as gatekeeper, which was simple, mild and efficient. The target-triggered catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) and glutathione reduction could convert low-abundance miRNA into a large amount of Mn
2+ . Without the addition of exogenous Mn2+ , the dynamically-generated Mn2+ -powered DNAzyme cleavage process induced abundant PB-COFs probe assembled on the four recognition domains of m-TDN, resulting in significantly signal output. Using miRNA-182-5p as the model target, the proposed electrochemical biosensor achieved ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-182-5p in the range of 10 fM-100 nM with a detection limit of 2.5 fM., Significance and Novelty: Taking advantages of PB-COFs probe as the enhanced signal labels, the integration of CHA, Mn2+ -powered DNAzyme and m-TDN amplification strategy significantly improved the sensitivity and specificity of the biosensor. The designed sensing platform was capable of miRNA detection in complex samples, which provided a new idea for biomarker detection, holding promising potential in clinical diagnosis and disease screening., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Background: Although men with premature ejaculation (PE) always show more negative emotions, including embarrassment, guilt and worry, this may be related to the stigma of PE. To investigated stigma and its associations with self-confidence and sexual relations in 4 PE syndromes, a survey was conducted in our hospital from December 2018 to December 2019 among 350 men with self-reported PE and 252 men without self-reported PE. The stigma, self-confidence and sexual relations were assessed by the Social Impact Scale (SIS) and Self-Esteem and Relationship questionnaire (SEAR), respectively. Ejaculation control, sexual life satisfaction and distress caused by PE were evaluated by the Index of PE., Results: Men with self-reported PE had higher internalized shame and social isolation scores and lower SEAR scores than control subjects. The highest score of internalized shame and social isolation and the lowest score of SEAR appeared in men with lifelong PE (LPE). After age adjustment, the positive relationships were stronger between distress about PE and internalized shame. Whereas, the stronger negative associations were found between social isolation and sexual satisfaction. The strongest association was observed between social isolation and sexual relationship. Therefore, the stigma associated with PE adversely affects the self-confidence, self-esteem, and sexual relationships of men with PE., Conclusion: Men with PE, especially LPE, have a high level of stigma and disharmonious sexual relations, and often lack self-confidence and self-esteem, which have a certain negative impact on their physical and mental health and life. These will be the key issues to be considered when we formulate a personalized treatment plan for PE., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

- Abstract
The concept of polyrotaxane comes from the rotaxane structure in the supramolecular field. It is a mechanically interlocked supramolecular assembly composed of linear polymer chains and cyclic molecules. Over recent decades, the synthesis and application of polyrotaxanes have seen remarkable growth. Particularly, cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes have been extensively reported due to the low-price raw materials, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. Hence, it is also one of the most promising mechanically interlocking supramolecules for wide industrialization in the future. Polyrotaxanes are widely introduced into materials such as elastomers, hydrogels, and engineering polymers to improve their mechanical properties or impart functionality to the materials. In these materials, polyrotaxane acts as a slidable cross-linker to dissipate energy through sliding or assist in dispersing stress concentration in the cross-linked network, thereby enhancing the toughness of the materials. Further, the unique sliding-ring effect of cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes has pioneered advancements in stretchable electronics and energy storage materials. This includes their innovative use in stretchable conductive composite and binders for anodes, addressing critical challenges in these fields. In this mini-review, our focus is to highlight the current progress and potential wider applications in the future, underlining their transformative impact across various domains of material science., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

- Abstract
Fungi are among the most diverse and ecologically important kingdoms in life. However, the distributional ranges of fungi remain largely unknown as do the ecological mechanisms that shape their distributions
1,2 . To provide an integrated view of the spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi, we implemented a globally distributed standardized aerial sampling of fungal spores3 . The vast majority of operational taxonomic units were detected within only one climatic zone, and the spatiotemporal patterns of species richness and community composition were mostly explained by annual mean air temperature. Tropical regions hosted the highest fungal diversity except for lichenized, ericoid mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi, which reached their peak diversity in temperate regions. The sensitivity in climatic responses was associated with phylogenetic relatedness, suggesting that large-scale distributions of some fungal groups are partially constrained by their ancestral niche. There was a strong phylogenetic signal in seasonal sensitivity, suggesting that some groups of fungi have retained their ancestral trait of sporulating for only a short period. Overall, our results show that the hyperdiverse kingdom of fungi follows globally highly predictable spatial and temporal dynamics, with seasonality in both species richness and community composition increasing with latitude. Our study reports patterns resembling those described for other major groups of organisms, thus making a major contribution to the long-standing debate on whether organisms with a microbial lifestyle follow the global biodiversity paradigms known for macroorganisms4,5 ., (© 2024. - Abstract
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common chronic lung disorder characterized by impaired proximal airway and bronchoalveolar development in premature births. Secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) is involved in lung development and lung injury events, while its role was not explored in BPD. For establishing the in vivo models of BPD, a mouse model of hyperoxia-induced lung injury was generated by exposing neonatal mice to hyperoxia for 7 days after birth. Alveolar myofibroblasts (AMYFs) were treated with hyperoxia to establish the in vitro models of BPD. Based on the scRNA-seq analysis of lungs of mice housed under normoxia or hyperoxia conditions, mouse macrophages and fibroblasts were main different cell clusters between the two groups, and differentially expressed genes in fibroblasts were screened. Further GO and KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that these differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in the pathways related to cell proliferation, apoptosis as well as the PI3K-AKT and ERK/MAPK pathways. SPP1 was found up-regulated in the lung tissues of hyperoxia mice. We also demonstrated the up-regulation of SPP1 in the BPD patients, the mouse model of hyperoxia-induced lung injury, and hyperoxia-induced cells. SPP1 deficiency was revealed to reduce the hyperoxia-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation and increase the viability of AMYFs. In the mouse model of hyperoxia induced lung injury, SPP1 deficiency was demonstrated to reverse the hyperoxia-induced alveolar growth disruption, oxidative stress and inflammation. Overall, SPP1 exacerbates BPD progression in vitro and in vivo by regulating oxidative stress and inflammatory response via the PI3K-AKT and ERK/MAPK pathways, which might provide novel therapeutic target for BPD therapy., (© 2024. - Abstract
Photocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR) is a promising route for environment remediation and sustainable ammonia synthesis. To design efficient photocatalysts, the recently emerged nanoarchitectonics approach holds great promise. Here, we report a nanohouse-like S-scheme heterjunction photocatalyst with high photocatalytic NitRR performance. The nano-house has a floor of plate-like metal organic framework-based photocatalyst (NH
2 -MIL-125), on which another photocatalyst Co(OH)2 nanosheet is grown while ZIF-8 hollow cages are also constructed as the surrounding wall/roof. Experimental and simulation results indicate that the positively charged, highly porous and hydrophobic ZIF-8 wall can modulate the environment in the nanohouse by (i) NO3 - enrichment/NH4 + discharge and (ii) suppression of the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. In combination with the enhanced electron-hole separation and strong redox capability in the NH2 -MIL-125@Co(OH)2 S-scheme heterjunction confined in the nano-house, the designed photocatalyst delivers an ammonia yield of 2454.9 μmol g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum yield of 8.02 % at 400 nm in pure water. - Abstract
The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO
2 ) reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is extensively regarded as a promising strategy to reach carbon neutralization. Copper sulfide (CuS) has been widely studied for its ability to produce C1 products with high selectivity. However, challenges still remain owing to the poor selectivity of formate. Here, a Bi/CeO2 /CuS composite was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method. Bi/CeO2 -decorated CuS possessed high formate selectivity, with the Faraday efficiency and current density reaching 88% and 17 mA cm-2 , respectively, in an H-cell. The Bi/CeO2 /CuS structure significantly reduces the energy barrier formed by OCHO*, resulting in the high activity and selectivity of the CO2 conversion to formate. Ce4+ readily undergoes reduction to Ce3+ , allowing the formation of a conductive network of Ce4+ /Ce3+ . This network facilitates electron transfer, stabilizes the Cu+ species, and enhances the adsorption and activation of CO2 . Furthermore, sulfur catalyzes the OCHO* transformation to formate. This work describes a highly efficient catalyst for CO2 to formate, which will aid in catalyst design for CO2 RR to target products.- Published

- Abstract
The interaction between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria has been shown to play a key role in hepatic steatosis during chronic obesity. β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) has been reported to regulate obesity, however, its molecular mechanism at the subcellular level remains unclear. Here, NMN improved liver steatosis and insulin resistance in chronic high-fat diet (HFD) mice. RNA-seq showed that compared with the liver of HFD mice, NMN intervention enhanced fat digestion and absorption and stimulated the cholesterol metabolism signaling pathways, while impaired insulin resistance and the fatty acid biosynthesis signaling pathways. Mechanistically, NMN ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction and ER oxidative stress in the liver of HFD mice by increasing hepatic nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD
+ ) (P < 0.01) levels. This effect increased the contact sites (mitochondria-associated membranes [MAMs]) between ER and mitochondria, thereby promoting intracellular ATP (P < 0.05) production and mitigating lipid metabolic disturbances in the liver of HFD mice. Taken together, this study provided a theoretical basis for restoring metabolic dynamic equilibrium in the liver of HFD mice by increasing MAMs via the nutritional strategy of NMN supplementation., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest We declare that we have no financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that can inappropriately influence our work, there is no professional or other personal interest of any nature or kind in any product, service and/or company that could be construed as influencing the position presented in, or the review of, the manuscript entitled., (Copyright © 2024. - Abstract
Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder widely recognized for its impaired bioenergy utilization. The astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle (ANLS) plays a critical role in brain energy supply. Recent studies have revealed abnormal lactate metabolism in SCZ, which is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, tissue hypoxia, gastric acid retention, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, abnormal brain iron metabolism, cerebral white matter hypermetabolic activity, and genetic susceptibility. Furthermore, astrocytes, neurons, and glutamate abnormalities are prevalent in SCZ with abnormal lactate metabolism, which are essential components for maintaining ANLS in the brain. Therefore, an in-depth study of the pathophysiological mechanisms of ANLS in SCZ with abnormal lactate metabolism will contribute to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of SCZ and provide new ideas and approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of SCZ., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

- Abstract
Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR) in neutral condition offers a promising strategy for green ammonia synthesis and wastewater treatment, the rational design of electrocatalysts is the cornerstone. Inspired by modern factory design where both machines and logistics matter for manufacturing, it is reported that cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles embedded in zinc-based zeolite imidazole frameworks (Zn-ZIF) function as a nanofactory with high performance. By selective phosphorization of ZnCo bimetallic zeolite imidazole framework (ZnCo-ZIF), the generated CoP nanoparticles act as "machines" (active sites) for molecular manufacturing (NO
3 - to NH4 + conversion). The purposely retained framework (Zn-ZIFs) with positive charge promotes logistics automation, i.e., the automatic delivery of NO3 - reactants and timely discharge of NH4 + products in-and-out the nanofactory due to electrostatic interaction. Moreover, the interaction between Zn-ZIF and CoP modulates the Co sites into electron insufficient state with upshifted d-band center, facilitating the reduction/hydrogenation of NO3 - to ammonia and restricting the competitive hydrogen evolution. Consequently, the assembled CoP/Zn-ZIF nanofactory exhibits superior NitRR performances with a high Faraday efficiency of ≈97% and a high ammonia yield of 0.89 mmol cm-1 h-1 in neutral condition, among the best of reported electrocatalysts. - Abstract
Cancer survivors including Asian American breast cancer survivors have reported their high needs for help during their survivorship process. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the necessity of technology-based programs to address their needs for help without face-to-face interactions has been highlighted. The purpose of this randomized intervention study was to determine the efficacy of a technology-based program in reducing various types of needs for help among this specific population. This was a randomized clinical trial with repeated measures. A total of 199 participants were included in the data analysis. The recruitment settings included both online and offline communities/groups for Asian Americans. The needs for help were assessed using the Support Care Needs Survey-34 Short Form (SCNS) subscales measuring psychological, information, physical, support, and communication needs. Data analysis was conducted through an intent-to-treat approach. In the mixed effect models, psychological needs, information needs, physical needs, and communication needs decreased over time (P < .001). However, there were no significant group * time effects. Social support significantly mediated the effects of a technology-based intervention on psychological, information, and support needs at the pre-test and the post-1 month. This study supported significant decreases in the needs for help of Asian American breast cancer survivors by a technology-based intervention. Further studies are needed with other racial/ethnic groups of cancer survivors to confirm the efficacy of a technology-based intervention in reducing cancer survivors' needs for help during their survivorship process., (© 2024. - Abstract
Novel methods for sampling and characterizing biodiversity hold great promise for re-evaluating patterns of life across the planet. The sampling of airborne spores with a cyclone sampler, and the sequencing of their DNA, have been suggested as an efficient and well-calibrated tool for surveying fungal diversity across various environments. Here we present data originating from the Global Spore Sampling Project, comprising 2,768 samples collected during two years at 47 outdoor locations across the world. Each sample represents fungal DNA extracted from 24 m
3 of air. We applied a conservative bioinformatics pipeline that filtered out sequences that did not show strong evidence of representing a fungal species. The pipeline yielded 27,954 species-level operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Each OTU is accompanied by a probabilistic taxonomic classification, validated through comparison with expert evaluations. To examine the potential of the data for ecological analyses, we partitioned the variation in species distributions into spatial and seasonal components, showing a strong effect of the annual mean temperature on community composition., (© 2024. - Abstract
Aging is a complex and multifaceted process involving a variety of interrelated molecular mechanisms and cellular systems. Phenotypically, the biological aging process is accompanied by a gradual loss of cellular function and the systemic deterioration of multiple tissues, resulting in susceptibility to aging-related diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that aging is closely associated with telomere attrition, DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, loss of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide levels, impaired macro-autophagy, stem cell exhaustion, inflammation, loss of protein balance, deregulated nutrient sensing, altered intercellular communication, and dysbiosis. These age-related changes may be alleviated by intervention strategies, such as calorie restriction, improved sleep quality, enhanced physical activity, and targeted longevity genes. In this review, we summarise the key historical progress in the exploration of important causes of aging and anti-aging strategies in recent decades, which provides a basis for further understanding of the reversibility of aging phenotypes, the application prospect of synthetic biotechnology in anti-aging therapy is also prospected., (© 2024. - Abstract
Cognitive impairment in the elderly is associated with alterations in bile acid (BA) metabolism. In this study, we observe elevated levels of serum conjugated primary bile acids (CPBAs) and ammonia in elderly individuals, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and aging rodents, with a more pronounced change in females. These changes are correlated with increased expression of the ileal apical sodium-bile acid transporter (ASBT), hippocampal synapse loss, and elevated brain CPBA and ammonia levels in rodents. In vitro experiments confirm that a CPBA, taurocholic acid, and ammonia induced synaptic loss. Manipulating intestinal BA transport using ASBT activators or inhibitors demonstrates the impact on brain CPBA and ammonia levels as well as cognitive decline in rodents. Additionally, administration of an intestinal BA sequestrant, cholestyramine, alleviates cognitive impairment, normalizing CPBAs and ammonia in aging mice. These findings highlight the potential of targeting intestinal BA absorption as a therapeutic strategy for age-related cognitive impairment., Competing Interests: Declaration of interests The authors declare no competing interests., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). - Abstract
Adsorption, which is a quick and effective method for phosphate management, can effectively address the crisis of phosphorus mineral resources and control eutrophication. Phosphate management systems typically use iron-containing nanominerals (ICNs) with large surface areas and high activity, as well as modified ICNs (mICNs). This paper comprehensively reviews phosphate management by ICNs and mICNs in different water environments. mICNs have a higher affinity for phosphates than ICNs. Phosphate adsorption on ICNs and mICNs occurs through mechanisms such as surface complexation, surface precipitation, electrostatic ligand exchange, and electrostatic attraction. Ionic strength influences phosphate adsorption by changing the surface potential and isoelectric point of ICNs and mICNs. Anions exhibit inhibitory effects on ICNs and mICNs in phosphate adsorption, while cations display a promoting effect. More importantly, high concentrations and molecular weights of natural organic matter can inhibit phosphate adsorption by ICNs and mICNs. Sodium hydroxide has high regeneration capability for ICNs and mICNs. Compared to ICNs with high crystallinity, those with low crystallinity are less likely to desorb. ICNs and mICNs can effectively manage municipal wastewater, eutrophic seawater, and eutrophic lakes. Adsorption of ICNs and mICNs saturated with phosphate can be used as fertilizers in agricultural production. Notably, mICNs and ICNs have positive and negative effects on microorganisms and aquatic organisms in soil. Finally, this study introduces the following: trends and prospects of machine learning-guided mICN design, novel methods for modified ICNs, mICN regeneration, development of mICNs with high adsorption capacity and selectivity for phosphate, investigation of competing ions in different water environments by mICNs, and trends and prospects of in-depth research on the adsorption mechanism of phosphate by weakly crystalline ferrihydrite. This comprehensive review can provide novel insights into the research on high-performance mICNs for phosphate management in the future., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest We declare that we have no financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that can inappropriately influence our work, there is no professional or other personal interest of any nature or kind in any product, service and/or company that could be construed as influencing the position presented in, or the review of, the manuscript entitled, “Iron-containing nanominerals for sustainable phosphate management: A comprehensive review and future perspectives”., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. - Abstract
Background: A growing number of studies have examined the relation between solid fuels use and cognitive function in the mid-elderly, but results are inconsistent. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out to evaluate their relevance and the efficacy of switching to cleaner fuels or using ventilation., Method: We used PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases to identify 17 studies in which the primary outcome variable was cognitive function decline or cognitive disorders, and the exposure measure was solid fuels use. The final search date of August 31, 2023. The effect size of odds ratio (OR), regression coefficient (β), and 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled. Heterogeneity and the possibility of publication bias were assessed by using the Q-statistic and Begg's test, respectively., Result: Among the 17 included papers, the study participants were ≥45 years old. Eleven studies assessed the relationship between solid fuels use and cognitive function decline [number of studies (n) = 11, β = -0.144; I
2 = 97.7%]. Five studies assessed the relationship between solid fuels use and cognitive disorders (n = 5, OR = 1.229; I2 = 41.1%). Switching from using solid fuels to clean fuels could reduce the risk of cognitive function decline as compared to those who remained on using solid fuels (n = 2; β = 0.710; I2 = 82.4%). Among participants using solid fuels, who cooked without on ventilated stoves were correlated with an enhanced risk of cognitive disorders as compared to participants who cooked with ventilated stoves (n = 2; OR = 1.358; I2 = 44.7%)., Conclusion: Our meta-analysis showed a negative relationship between solid fuels use with cognitive function, and a positive relationship with cognitive disorders. Cleaner fuels, using ventilation, improved cookstoves can reduce the adverse health hazards of solid fuels use., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
