1. Sarang at DEFACTIFY 4.0: Detecting AI-Generated Text Using Noised Data and an Ensemble of DeBERTa Models

Abstract

This paper presents an effective approach to detect AI-generated text, developed for the Defactify 4.0 shared task at the fourth workshop on multimodal fact checking and hate speech detection. The task consists of two subtasks: Task-A, classifying whether a text is AI generated or human written, and Task-B, classifying the specific large language model that generated the text. Our team (Sarang) achieved the 1st place in both tasks with F1 scores of 1.0 and 0.9531, respectively. The methodology involves adding noise to the dataset to improve model robustness and generalization. We used an ensemble of DeBERTa models to effectively capture complex patterns in the text. The result indicates the effectiveness of our noise-driven and ensemble-based approach, setting a new standard in AI-generated text detection and providing guidance for future developments., Comment: AAAI-25 DEFACTIFY 4.0 Workshop AI generated text detection (1st Rank)

2. A BERT Based Hybrid Recommendation System For Academic Collaboration

Abstract

Universities serve as a hub for academic collaboration, promoting the exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives among students and faculty through interdisciplinary dialogue. However, as universities expand in size, conventional networking approaches via student chapters, class groups, and faculty committees become cumbersome. To address this challenge, an academia-specific profile recommendation system is proposed to connect like-minded stakeholders within any university community. This study evaluates three techniques: Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), and a hybrid approach to generate effective recommendations. Due to the unlabelled nature of the dataset, Affinity Propagation cluster-based relabelling is performed to understand the grouping of similar profiles. The hybrid model demonstrated superior performance, evidenced by its similarity score, Silhouette score, Davies-Bouldin index, and Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain (NDCG), achieving an optimal balance between diversity and relevance in recommendations. Furthermore, the optimal model has been implemented as a mobile application, which dynamically suggests relevant profiles based on users' skills and collaboration interests, incorporating contextual understanding. 3. Leveraging Traceroute Inconsistencies to Improve IP Geolocation

Abstract

Traceroutes and geolocation are two essential network measurement tools that aid applications such as network mapping, topology generation, censorship, and Internet path analysis. However, these tools, individually and when combined, have significant limitations that can lead to inaccurate results. Prior research addressed specific issues with traceroutes and geolocation individually, often requiring additional measurements. In this paper, we introduce GeoTrace, a lightweight tool designed to identify, classify, and resolve geolocation anomalies in traceroutes using existing data. GeoTrace leverages the abundant information in traceroutes and geolocation databases to identify anomalous IP addresses with incorrect geolocation. It systematically classifies these anomalies based on underlying causes - such as MPLS effects or interface discrepancies - and refines their geolocation estimates where possible. By correcting these inaccuracies, GeoTrace enhances the reliability of traceroute-based analyses without the need for additional probing. Our work offers a streamlined solution that enhances the accuracy of geolocation in traceroute analysis, paving the way for more reliable measurement studies.

4. Cinemeducation Improves Early Clinical Exposure to Inborn Errors of Metabolism

Abstract

Cinemeducation is an effective tool to help students develop humanistic skills. However, there was a need for more studies to find out if this can also be utilized to improve the interest and satisfaction of students learning about rare diseases such as the inborn errors of metabolism. The aim was to introduce cinemeducation as part of early clinical exposure and teach first-year MBBS students in the Department of Biochemistry about inborn errors of metabolism. This was a quasi-experimental, cross-over study involving 100 MBBS students. Movie clips prepared from Lorenzo's Oil (for Lipid metabolism) and Extraordinary Measures (for Lysosomal Storage Disease) and corresponding paper-based cases; questionnaires and feedback forms were validated by expert group review. Students' academic performance was improved in the groups where the Extraordinary Measures movie was used for cinemeducation. Still, this effect was not observed when the movie Lorenzo's Oil was used. Both learners and facilitators were satisfied with cinemeducation. Cinemeducation was effectively introduced to teach inborn errors of metabolism in the Department of Biochemistry topic-dependent manner.

Abstract

Caffeic acid, a potent polyphenol belonging to the hydroxycinnamic acid derivative class, was utilized in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at ambient temperature. The resultant conjugates underwent comprehensive characterization employing various analytical techniques, including UV–visible spectroscopy, FTIR, RAMAN spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) for size and zeta potential analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Through these analyses, the morphological characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles were elucidated, providing valuable insights into their structural properties. Subsequently, the cytotoxic effects of the caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles were assessed against A549 cells over a 48-h period by MTT assay. Remarkably, these nanoparticles exhibited significant toxicity towards the cells, with inhibitory effects observed at concentrations of 141 μg/ml for CA AgNPs. This underscores their potential as potent agents against cancer cells. Furthermore, the profound significance of caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles was evaluated specifically against A549 lung cancer cells. This was corroborated through cell cycle analysis, which demonstrated the potent anticancer activity of the caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles. Such findings suggest promising prospects for their utilization in diverse cancer treatment modalities. Overall, the successful synthesis and characterization of caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles underscore their potential as potent agents against cancer, particularly in combating A549 lung cancer cells. Further research and exploration into their mechanisms of action and potential synergistic effects with existing anticancer therapies could unveil additional avenues for their clinical translation and utilization in cancer management.
