Abstract

Six time series related to atmospheric phenomena are used as inputs for experiments offorecasting with singular spectrum analysis (SSA). Existing methods for SSA parametersselection are compared throughout their forecasting accuracy relatively to an optimal aposteriori selection and to a naive forecasting methods. The comparison shows that awidespread practice of selecting longer windows leads often to poorer predictions. It alsoconfirms that the choices of the window length and of the grouping are essential. Abstract

Blighia sapida oil, a substance with a rich history of use for its nutritional, therapeutic, traditional, and cosmetic benefits, was the focus of our study. We investigated the impact of consuming edible oil from B. sapida arils on Wistar rats. The crude oil from unripe arils was extracted using cold pressing and then administered to the rats. The toxicity was evaluated according to the OECD method. Notably, there were no signs of food poisoning or adverse effects on the weight and behavior of the rats treated with B. sapida oils. The LD50 of the oil was more significant than 5000 mg/kg of body weight, and hematological and biochemical parameters did not differ significantly from the control group. Rats fed with an oil‐supplemented diet showed an increase in weight compared to the negative control group. No fatty deposits were found in vital organs, and consuming the oil did not affect the immune system or biochemical biomarkers. However, excessive intake of fat may have harmful effects on tissues. Our findings strongly suggest that B. sapida oil is safe for consumption within reasonable limits. The data we present here reveal that the oil derived from B. sapida is suitable for moderate consumption and may offer various health advantages, a potential that warrants further exploration. Abstract

Introduction: Human papilloma virus testing is a new method of screening for precancerous cervical lesions. Here we identified factors associated to the positive Human papilloma virus-testing in the context of cervical precancer screening at the Souro Sanou National Teaching Hospital in Burkina Faso. Materials and method: Conducted from June 2021-May 2022, this was a cross-sectional study, including patients aged between 25 and 55 years-old and screened for precancerous lesions and received HPV-testing at the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine (DGORM) of the SSNTH. The proportion of positive HPV-test was calculated, and we identified factors associated to positive HPV-test using logistic regression. Results: Of the 759 patients came for precancerous lesions screening, 559 patients were included. Their mean-age was 38.8 ± 7.9 years-old, 94.3% were from urban area and 50.3% identified as housewives. Regarding the past medical history, it noted: number of gestures (3.2 ± 2.0), parity (2.8 ± 1.9), number of living children (2.8 ± 1.9), having abortion experience (24.0%), age of first-sexual-intercourse(18.6 ± 2.3 years), alcohol (9.1%) and tobacco (1.0%) consumption, sexually-transmitted-infection (27.0%), Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infection (5.0%); none had been vaccinated against HPV. Biologically, 16.6% [95% CI: 13.6–20] of the women had a positive HPV-test. The factors significantly associated with positive HPV-test were: occupation in the private sector [OR: 0.06(0.0–0.5); p < 0.001], having a sexually-transmitted-infection [OR: 3.9(2.0–7.7); p < 0.001], age of first-sexual-intercourse [OR: 0.7(0.6–0.9); p < 0.001], sexual-multiple-partnership [OR: 17.5(8.1–39.6); p < 0.001], and HIV status [OR: 13.2(4.4–40.5); p < 0.001]. Conclusion: These results call for health actions through the reinforcement for behavioral change mainly about sexually-transmitted-infections, and for the raising awareness of the population for the screening related to the precancerous lesions and HIV. 33. Perceived Anomic Threat, Beliefs in LGBTQ Conspiracy Theories and Support for Violence Against LGBTQ Minorities in a Highly Heteronormative Context: The Case of Cameroon

Abstract

The literature on conspiracy theories reports that they are generated by a feeling of threat and are catalysts for the extremist and violent behavior of which many minority groups are victims, including members of the LGBTQ community. However, the fact that LGBTQ conspiracy theories are poorly documented in the scientific literature does not allow us to know what link they could have with the extremist behavior against LGBTQ people that are reported in many contexts, including sub-Saharan Africa in particular, a region considered one of the most hostile in the world for these people, but which, paradoxically, is of little interest to researchers. This study contributes to filling this gap by proposing that because individuals perceive the threat of LGBTQ people to their communities from the perspective of their values, they are inclined to believe in LGBTQ conspiracy theories that proliferate in their social environment and consequently support violent behaviors against LGBTQ people, with the aim of trying to restore the social fabric perceived as being fractured because of their lifestyle. The study is conducted in the Cameroonian context with a sample of 861 heterosexuals, aged between 17 and 49 years (M = 29.40; SD = 8.15), to whom we administered a set of measures relating to perceived anomic threat, beliefs in LGBTQ conspiracy theories and endorsement of violent behavior towards LGBTQ people. In addition to the main measures, emotional reactions towards LGBTQ minorities (disgust, fear, anger, hate and distrust) were also measured, with instruments presenting acceptable reliability indices. The results provide empirical support for the hypothesis of the study. They report that in the highly heteronormative Cameroonian context, the perception of anomic threat, materialized by the perceived disintegration of the social structure, leads heterosexuals to support violence against LGBTQ people via beliefs in the LGBTQ conspiracy theories.

Abstract

This study reviewed the state-of-the-art knowledge on Nypa fruticans-based (hereafter Nypa-based) land use along with the corresponding ecosystem services that contribute to the wellbeing of mangrove-dependent communities (MDCs) in the tropics. In relation to the land uses, Nypa’s ecosystem service valuation, restoration potential and threats were also explored. Nypa-based land uses documented in tropical countries since the last century include, Natural Nypa Forests (NNF), Nypa Plantations (NP), Nypa-Aquaculture Systems (NAS), and Nypa-Agriculture Systems (NAgS). Even though land use-specific variations were found in distribution, abundance, and ecosystem services provided, it appears that there is the great overlap of reported ecosystem services regardless of Nypa land use. The provisioning ecosystem services of Nypa have been made use of at the subsistence level by man for millennia. These especially include its use as a source of food, fuel, and fiber. Nypa is unique among the many mangroves as being about the only one that has significantly been developed for commercial exploitation beyond the typical destructive harvest for wood and charcoal as seen in most other mangroves. Our review presents new research that has made important inroads in exploring Nypa’s yet untapped commercial potential for livelihood provisioning for poor MDCs. Building further on these pioneering results holds major promise for the development of new sustainable livelihood opportunities for MDCs. The review also shows that Nypa provides substantial supporting, regulating and cultural services. These services have been rarely studied, and Nypa’s contribution to the wellbeing of MDCs are therefore not well-acknowledged. 36. Communication patterns in engineering enterprise social networks: an exploratory analysis using short text topic modelling

Abstract

Enterprise social network messaging sites are becoming increasingly popular for team communication in engineering and product design. These digital communication platforms capture detailed messages between members of the design team and are an appealing data set for researchers who seek to better understand communication in design. This exploratory study investigates whether we can use enterprise social network messages to model communication patterns throughout the product design process. We apply short text topic modelling (STTM) to a data set comprising 250,000 messages sent by 32 teams enrolled in a 3-month intensive product design course. Many researchers describe the engineering design process as a series of convergent and divergent thinking stages, such as the popular double diamond model, and we use this theory as a case study in this work. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of STTM results reveals several trends, such as it is indeed possible to see evidence of cyclical convergence and divergence of topics in team communication; within the convergence–divergence pattern, strong teams have fewer topics in their topic models than weaker teams; and teams show characteristics of product, project, course, and other themes within each topic. We provide evidence that the analysis of enterprise social networking messages, with advanced topic modelling techniques, can uncover insights into design processes and can identify the communication patterns of successful teams.

37. Determining the effects of Candida utilis‐fermented pea starch vs. unfermented pea starch, alone or in whole diets, on palatability and glycemic response in dogs and cats.

Abstract

Current research suggests yeast fermentation has the potential to improve palatability of pea‐based diets for both cats and dogs. However, to be useful, fermentation should not compromise other healthy attributes of peas such as a low glycemic response. Fermentation of uncooked pea starch with Candida utilis (ATCC 9950) appeared to increase crude protein, crude fiber content, inorganic compounds (phosphorus and iron) and phenols. Whole diets were designed with fermented and unfermented pea starch to assess palatability, food intake, and glycemic responses in unacclimated, mixed sex Beagle dogs and mixed breed cats (n = 8 and n = 7, respectively). For palatability testing, a control diet was formulated with 30% corn starch as well as test diets with 30% inclusion of fermented or unfermented pea starch (all lab‐made), then compared to a commercial diet containing pea starch (Legacy/Horizon). Fermentation had little effect on rapidly digestible starch either in uncooked starch form or when incorporated into whole diets, but did decrease resistant starch by 15% and increase slowly digestible starch by 20%. Palatability tests using either two choices or four choices at a time revealed a significant preference for the fermented pea starch diet (p < 0.01) in both species. For the glycemic responses, a total of four different pea products were included: unfermented pea starch, fermented pea starch, and 30% inclusion of unfermented and fermented pea starch in whole formulated diets. There were no significant changes in glycemic responses with the fermented pea diet compared to the unfermented diet, demonstrating that healthful low glycemic properties of pea starch were retained after C. utilis fermentation. Overall, C. utilis‐fermentation technique was successfully adapted to pea starch where it resulted in increased palatability and food intake in dogs and cats, with potential to positively contribute to overall health benefits for both species.
