Between 2020 and 2023, rust fungus specimens were collected from the primary forested regions of the Sanjiangyuan area in Qinghai Province, resulting in over 300 samples. A taxonomic and phylogenetic study of the rust fungi from these forests was conducted using morphological and molecular biological techniques. The investigation identified rust fungi from 7 families, 12 genera, 56 species and varieties, including 10 new host records, 1 new record for China, and 2 novel species. The host plants involved belonged to 26 families, 48 genera, and 78 species. Pucciniaceae and Coleosporiaceae were the dominant families, with the genera Puccinia, Melampsora, and Gymnosporangium being prevalent. The rust fungi in the Sanjiangyuan forests showed a biogeographical affinity with the North Temperate Zone. Floristic comparisons revealed a higher similarity with rust fungi from Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Tibet and a lower similarity with those from Hainan. An analysis of the life forms of rust fungus host plants indicated that herbaceous plants were the most common, followed by shrubs and trees. In different regions of Sanjiangyuan, rust fungi were found as follows: Golog Prefecture with 6 families, 9 genera, and 28 species; Yushu Prefecture with 5 families, 8 genera, and 31 species; Huangnan Prefecture with 5 families, 9 genera, and 26 species; and Hainan Prefecture with 4 families, 5 genera, and 10 species. The families Pucciniaceae, Melampsoraceae, and Coleosporiaceae were common across all four regions. Sphaerellopsis species are putative hyperparasites of rust fungi and may be promising biological control agents (BCA) of rust diseases. However, few detailed studies limit potential BCA development in Sphaerellopsis. Here, we explored the biogeography, host-specificity, and species diversity of Sphaerellopsis and examined the early infection stage of one species, S. macroconidialis, to infer its trophic status. We randomly screened 5,621 rust specimens spanning 99 genera at the Arthur Fungarium for the presence of Sphaerellopsis. We identified 199 rust specimens infected with Sphaerellopsis species on which we conducted morphological and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses. Five Sphaerellopsis species were recovered, infecting a total of 122 rust species in 18 genera from 34 countries. Sphaerellopsis melampsorinearum sp. nov. is described as a new species based on molecular phylogenetic data and morphological features of the sexual and asexual morphs. Sphaerellopsis paraphysata was the most commonly encountered species, found on 77 rust specimens, followed by Sphaerellopsis macroconidialis on 56 and S. melampsorinearum on 55 examined specimens. The type species, Sphaerellopsis filum, was found on 12 rust specimens and Sphaerellopsis hakeae on a single specimen. We also recovered and documented for the first time, the sexual morph of S. macroconidialis, from a specimen collected in Brazil. Our data indicate that Sphaerellopsis species are not host specific and furthermore that most species are cosmopolitan in distribution. However, S. paraphysata is more abundant in the tropics, and S. hakeae may be restricted to Australia. Finally, we confirm the mycoparasitic strategy of S. macroconidialis through in-vitro interaction tests with the urediniospores of Puccinia polysora. Shortly after germination, hyphae of S. macroconidialis began growing along the germ tubes of P. polysora and coiling around them. After 12 days of co-cultivation, turgor loss was evident in the germ tubes of P. polysora, and appressorium-like structures had formed on urediniospores. A recent study published in the New Disease Reports journal has identified Melampsora ferrinii as the cause of rust disease on Corydalis incisa, commonly known as incised fumewort, in Korea. This is the first recorded instance of M. ferrinii affecting C. incisa in Korea. The study found that the spread of C. incisa, driven by global climate change, could potentially lead to the occurrence of M. ferrinii on Salix species, which could result in ecological and economic damage. Honey bee workers (Apis mellifera L.) collect nectar, honeydew and pollen from plants in orderto provide the colony with, among others, carbohydrates and protein. Whenever these sources are unavailable in the environment, bees turn to alternatives. An example of this are fungi spores collected accidentally or on purpose. This last phenomenon is the aim of this study, in which we have shown that worker bees can collect willow rust (Melampsora spp.) spores. We observed as the bees obtained spores and placed them in pollen baskets. The presence of spores was demonstrated with the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Basidiomycota is one of the major phyla in the fungal tree of life. The outline of Basidiomycota provides essential taxonomic information for researchers and workers in mycology. In this study, we present a time-framed phylogenomic tree with 487 species of Basidiomycota from 127 families, 47 orders, 14 classes and four subphyla; we update the outline of Basidiomycota based on the phylogenomic relationships and the taxonomic studies since 2019; and we provide notes for each order and discuss the history, defining characteristics, evolution, justification of orders, problems, significance, and plates. Our phylogenomic analysis suggests that the subphyla diverged in a time range of 443–490 Myr (million years), classes in a time range of 312–412 Myr, and orders in a time range of 102–361 Myr. Families diverged in a time range of 50–289 Myr, 76–224 Myr, and 62–156 Myr in Agaricomycotina, Pucciniomycotina, and Ustilaginomycotina, respectively. Based on the phylogenomic relationships and divergence times, we propose a new suborder Mycenineae in Agaricales to accommodate Mycenaceae. In the current outline of Basidiomycota, there are four subphyla, 20 classes, 77 orders, 297 families, and 2134 genera accepted. When building a robust taxonomy of Basidiomycota in the genomic era, the generation of molecular phylogenetic data has become relatively easier. This study examines the relationship between needle age and rust resistance in Picea crassifolia, focusing on the needle morphology, including size, shape, and physiological traits. One-year-old spruce needles are more susceptible to rust, while two-year-old needles show effective resistance. Using RNA-seq on the Illumina HiSeq500 platform, we analyzed both healthy and diseased one-year-old needles (N and B), as well as healthy one-year-old and two-year-old needles (N and L). We applied a fold change (FC) threshold of ≥2 and a false discovery rate (FDR) of <0.01, alongside GO annotation and KEGG pathway enrichment, to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). In N vs. B, DEGs were significantly enriched in processes such as metabolism, cellular function, catalysis, binding, ribosomal function, plant-pathogen interactions, endoplasmic reticulum protein processing, and signal transduction, revealing a polygenic network regulating the rust response. Similarly, in N vs. L, electron microscopy highlighted morphological differences in the wax layers of needles, with subsequent transcriptome sequencing uncovering genes involved in the development of one-year-old and two-year-old needles. DEGs were primarily found in pathways related to cutin, suberin, wax biosynthesis, fatty acid metabolism, photosynthesis, and phenylalanine synthesis. Two-year-old needles displayed reduced stomatal density, higher lignin content, and a thicker wax layer compared to one-year-old needles. Validation of the RNA-seq data through RT-qPCR on 10 DEGs confirmed the consistency of gene expression trends, enhancing our understanding of Picea crassifolia's genetic response to rust and supporting future research into its disease resistance. This paper presents an annotated checklist of the Basidiomycota taxa (including lichenicolous fungi and the subdivision Pucciniomycotina) from the Azores archipelago and reviews the published records to account for their taxonomic status. The number of Basidiomycota species recorded in the Azores has increased considerably during the 20th century and now stands at 544 species. This study provides distribution data and includes changes in the nomenclature of the listed taxa. Sampling campaigns contributed to 116 new records of Basidiomycota for the Azores archipelago. In addition, there were new records for eight islands: 162 species found for the first time on São Miguel Island, 55 species new to Santa Maria Island, 33 species new to Flores Island, 15 species new to Terceira Island, 9 species new to Pico Island, 17 species new to São Jorge Island, 4 species new to Graciosa Island, and 2 species new to Corvo Island. The transformation of vegetation cover in the archipelago has been very drastic, and this is reflected in the presence of many foreign fungal species on the islands. From these data, we conclude that within Macaronesia, the diversity of Basidiomycota in the Azores is more similar to that in Madeira than in the Canary Islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we updated and revised the checklist of macrofungi, along with the distribution of phytogeographical regions and the regional conservation status in Mongolia. The checklist comprises 677 macrofungal species belonging to 284 genera and 119 families in the country. Based on previous studies, 18 species are currently invasive to Mongolia. In this checklist, only four species are endemic to Mongolia. Among the 677 species, the regional conservation status of 51 species was previously assessed as threatened in the country. Furthermore, we collected all available occurrence records from various sources. A total of 4733 occurrences of 655 species across Mongolia were analyzed for species richness based on a 0.5° × 0.5° grid cell size. We found the records to be unevenly distributed across Mongolia, where records from the northern and central parts dominate. Among these, we identified 43 grids with a high diversity of macrofungal species. Most of these grids did not reside inside by protected geographical areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons and non-LTR retrotransposons are two major repetitive components of eukaryotic genomes. Short intersperse elements (SINEs) are non-autonomous non-LTR retrotransposons with a sequence similar to small RNAs such as tRNA and 5S rRNA. Cassandra is a non-autonomous LTR retrotransposon with a 5S rRNA-like sequence in its LTRs. This observation led me to investigate the presence of non-autonomous LTR retrotransposons containing other small RNA sequences in their LTRs. Here, I discover and describe non-autonomous LTR retrotransposons Helenus and Ajax, with LTR regions of respective tRNA and 5S rRNA origin. Helenus and Ajax are likely mobilized by autonomous LTR retrotransposons. Helenus or Ajax are unlikely to encode a functional RNA. The finding of Helenus and Ajax confirms that non-autonomous LTR retrotransposons can be a source of small RNA-like interspersed sequences in the eukaryotic genomes. An understanding of their biology could contribute to the more precise prediction of small RNA genes and cellular RNA components as well as to the understanding of their evolutionary impacts. Terminal repeat retrotransposons in miniature (TRIMs) are short non-autonomous long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons found from various eukaryotes. Cassandra is a unique TRIM lineage which contains a 5S rRNA-derived sequence in its LTRs. Here, two new groups of TRIMs, designated Helenus and Ajax, are reported based on bioinformatics analysis and the usage of Repbase. Helenus is found from fungi, animals, and plants, and its LTRs contain a tRNA-like sequence. It includes two LTRs and between them, a primer-binding site (PBS) and polypurine tract (PPT) exist. Fungal and plant Helenus generate 5 bp target site duplications (TSDs) upon integration, while animal Helenus generates 4 bp TSDs. Ajax includes a 5S rRNA-derived sequence in its LTR and is found from two nemertean genomes. Ajax generates 5 bp TSDs upon integration. These results suggest that despite their unique promoters, Helenus and Ajax are TRIMs whose transposition is dependent on autonomous LTR retrotransposon. These TRIMs can originate through an insertion of SINE in an LTR of TRIM. The discovery of Helenus and Ajax suggests the presence of TRIMs with a promoter for RNA polymerase III derived from a small RNA gene, which is here collectively termed TRIMp3. The paper presents the pathogenic mycobiota associated with ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs as well as flowering plants grown in the green spaces of the city of Bucharest. The observations were carried out in 2020-2023 in the Herastrau Park, the Bazilescu Park, the Dendrological Park and the Botanical Garden on the USAMVcampus and adjoining streets. Ornamental plants are attacked by various pathogenic species of fungi from Ascomycota and Basidiomycota phyla. During the study, symptoms produced by 47 species of fungal pathogens, belonging to the phylum Ascomycota, included in 11 orders (Erysiphales, Rhytismatales, Glomerellales, Helotiales, Diaporthales, Capnodiales, Taphrinales, Mycosphaerellales, Venturiales, Myringiales, Pleosporales) were observed. From the Basidiomycota phylum, 10 species belonging to 4 orders (Pucciniales, Agaricales, Entylomatales, Polyporales) were identified.
