Background and Objectives This study examined the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the 10-item Awareness of Age-Related Change Short Form (AARC-SF) questionnaire in a Chinese-speaking sample of older adults in Taiwan. Research Design and Methods Data from 292 participants (M age = 77.64 years) in the Healthy Aging Longitudinal Study in Taiwan cohort were used for Study 1, whereas data from young-old adult samples in Germany were used for Study 2. Results Study 1 showed that the AARC-SF had satisfactory reliability and validity for assessing adults' AARC in Taiwan. Analyses confirmed the 2-factor structure of AARC-gains and AARC-losses. Study 2 demonstrated strong measurement invariance across men and women, whereas direct comparisons of the item scores between young-old adults and old-old adults need to be made with caution. Noninvariance of loadings indicated that certain items were more closely linked to AARC-gains and AARC-losses in Taiwan than in Germany. Noninvariance of intercepts suggested potential biases in comparing item scores between Taiwanese and German older adults. Discussion and Implications The AARC-SF emerged as a reliable and valid instrument for capturing positive and negative subjective aging experiences among Taiwanese older adults. However, it is noteworthy that some items on the AARC-SF may solicit different responses from individuals of different ages and different countries of origin, requiring caution with age group and cross-cultural comparisons. Individuals with severe burn injuries may develop depression, yet knowledge about psychological risk factors for depression following trauma is limited. This study investigated the prospective impact and interplay of prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes (posttraumatic negative appraisals and trauma-related rumination) to depressive symptoms between 6 and 24 months after burn injury. Taiwanese adult survivors of burn (N = 118) participated in surveys immediately post-burn and at 6-, 12-, and 24-months follow-up. Participants were 7 5% men, with an average age of 41.8 years and an average of TBSA of 18.3%. A total of 8.5%, 5.9%, and 4.2% met criteria for probable major depression at 6, 12, and 24 months post-burn, respectively. The prevalence increased to 23.7%, 11.0%, and 5.9% using the cutoff on the PHQ-9. Prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes immediately post-burn explained 13.5%, 20.5%, and 18.6% of the variance in depressive symptoms at 6, 12, and 24 months post-burn, respectively. Posttraumatic negative appraisals strongly predicted depressive symptoms post-burn across follow-ups. Moreover, posttraumatic negative appraisals significantly mediated the effect of prior depression on subsequent depressive symptoms across follow-ups. Prior depression significantly moderated the effect of trauma-related rumination on depressive symptoms at 6 months post-burn. Our results are the first to demonstrate the role and interplay of prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes in post-burn depression. Objectives: To investigate community health centers' (CHCs) health literacy. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Sample: A total of 374 CHCs were surveyed and 258 CHCs responded, with an effective questionnaire response rate of 69.0%. Measurements: Data were collected by using a self‐developed health literacy assessment tool to survey CHCs' health literacy throughout Taiwan from January to December 2019. Results: The item of organizational health literacy (OHL) with the highest proportion of CHCs not implementing them was "Design of easy‐to‐use computer applications and new media" (47.3% not yet achieved), followed by "Involving target audiences in document and service development" (34.9% not yet achieved). CHCs located in northern Taiwan had higher health literacy achievement scores than those in other regions, and those in urban areas had higher health literacy achievement scores than those in general and remote areas. Conclusions: This study identified items with poor implementation of OHL and found regional differences in health literacy among CHCs. The findings can inform the development of targeted interventions to improve health literacy in underperforming CHCs and guide policymakers in allocating resources to regions and areas in need of. Aim: To determine the effect of nurses' mood at work (positive and negative) on work engagement and whether work morale mediates this relationship. Background: Nurses' work engagement is a key research area, yet limited data regarding the relationship between nurses' mood at work and work engagement are available. Therefore, how nurses' positive or negative mood at work affects their work engagement remains unclear. Methods: This study analyzed nurses from a medical center in Taipei City. A total of 279 completed questionnaires were returned. The data were analyzed using two‐stage structural equation modeling to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings: Nurses' positive mood had a significantly positive effect on work morale, whereas their negative mood had a significantly negative effect on work morale. Additionally, work morale played a mediating role in the relationship between mood at work and work engagement. Conclusion: The results revealed that nurses' moods affected their work engagement and that this relationship was affected by work morale. Implications for nursing and health policy: Healthcare institutions and hospitals could develop a positive work environment to help nurses maintain their good mood and reduce negative affectivity. Face culture is a crucial facet of East Asia. The most common self‐report measure for face concern is the unidimensional Loss of Face Scale. In this study, we examined the dimensionality, factor structure, and validity of the Loss of Face Scale in two samples. Sample 1 (N = 602) consisted of 303 Taiwanese mothers and 299 U.S. mothers. Sample 2 (N = 602) was an independent sample from Sample 1, consisting of 294 Taiwanese mothers and 308 U.S. mothers. We proposed a modified 15‐item four‐dimensional factor structure to better capture the complexity of face. Four sub‐domains emerged from the results of exploratory structural equation modelling: Low‐Profile, Over‐Preparation, Harmony Seeking, and Non‐Aggression. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis indicated configural and metric invariance but failed to establish full scalar invariance across countries. Convergent validity was supported by positive correlations with other Asian cultural values. While all four domains of face showed small to moderate correlations with depression in the U.S., only Low‐Profile was associated with depression in Taiwan, suggesting that not all aspects of face concern are non‐adaptive in East Asian contexts. Live streaming shopping (LSS) has become a means of increasing sales and has become a crucial research topic. Drawing on uncertainty reduction theory, parasocial relationship theory, and social influence theory, this study develops a research model to investigate the factors affecting LSS viewers' continued watching and purchase intentions. The results indicate that the real-time multiparty interactivity of LSS offers information from two sources that can satisfy the long-term viewers' needs for information. The first is the viewer's perceived affinity with the streamer based on the information shared by the streamer. These perceptions lead to the development of a parasocial relationship, promoting identification with the streamer. The second is the shared communication network (SCN) comprising the audience watching the LSS content. This SCN generates social influence; coviewers' endorsements and trustworthiness are internalised and influence the perceived credibility of the streamer and can promote identification with the streamer. Parasocial relationships, credibility, and identification with the streamer increase viewers' intention to continue to watch LSS content and to purchase the products sold by the streamer. This study contributes to the LSS literature by investigating the influence of viewer–viewer interactions and highlighting the importance of the SCN in maintaining streamer–viewer relationships. Online dating and dating apps are meant to help sexual minorities find romantic partners, but they have also presented challenges and obstacles. Based on 27 in-depth interviews with lesbian, gay, and bisexual dating app users living in Taiwan, this exploratory study proposes the concept of hyperpersonal failure as a holistic framework for understanding these challenges. This framework specifies four types of failure, each corresponding to one element in the original hyperpersonal communication model: the failure to present oneself (online daters as the sender), the failure to meet conversational expectations (the channel), the failure to develop positive impressions of the targets (online daters as the receiver), and the failure to obtain responses (the feedback). The study also discusses how the affordances of online environments contribute to hyperpersonal failure. Background: The adoption of Robotic Pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) is increasing globally. Meanwhile, reduced-port RPD (RPRPD) remains uncommon, requiring robot-specific techniques not possible with laparoscopy. We introduce a unique RPRPD technique optimizing surgical field exposure. Methods: Our RPRPD utilizes a single-site plus-two ports technique, facilitated by a single-port platform through a 5-cm incision. The configuration of robotic arms (arm1, arm2, arm3, and arm4) were strategically designed for optimal procedural efficiency, with the arms2 and arm3, alongside the assistant trocar, mounted on the single-port platform, while the arms1 and arm4 were positioned laterally across the abdomen. Drainage was established via channels created at the arm1 and arm4 insertion sites. A "gooseneck traction" was principally employed with the robotic instrument to prop up the specimen rather than grasp, improving the surgical field's visibility and access. Clinical outcomes of patients who underwent RPRPD performed between August 2020 and September 2023 by a single surgeon across two centers in Taiwan and Japan were reviewed. Results: Fifty patients underwent RPRPD using the single-site plus-two ports technique. The gooseneck traction technique enabled goodsurgical field deployment and allowed for unrestricted movement of robotic arms with no collisions with the assistant instruments. The median operative time was 351 min (250–488 min), including 271 min (219–422 min) of console time and three minutes (2–10 min) of docking time. The median estimated blood loss was 80 mL (1–872 mL). All RPRPD procedures were successfully performed without the need for conversion to open surgery. Postoperative major morbidity (i.e., Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ IIIa) was observed in 6 (12%) patients and median postoperative hospital stay was 13 days. Conclusions: The single-site plus-two ports RPRPD with the gooseneck traction proves to be a safe, feasible option, facilitating surgical field visibility and robotic arm maneuverability. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of music intervention on quality of life, anxiety, and fatigue among patients with breast cancer. SAMPLE & SETTING: 170 individuals from the general surgery unit of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. METHODS & VARIABLES: Individuals who had received a mastectomy were randomly assigned to a treatment group or control group. In the treatment group, participants received music intervention for an hour each week, totaling 12 hours during 12 consecutive weeks. The primary variable was quality of life, and secondary variables were anxiety and fatigue. RESULTS: Greater quality of life was seen in the treatment group at 12 weeks. In the treatment group, participants showed significant improvement in State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (trait), which was most significant at eight weeks. No statistically significant difference was observed in fatigue levels after 4, 8, and 12 weeks of music intervention. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Music intervention may improve anxiety and quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Introduction: Stress-induced hyperglycemia (SIH) and malnutrition are common in trauma patients and are linked to worse outcomes. This study examined the influence of nutritional status, determined by the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), on the incidence of SIH in trauma patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on adult trauma patients admitted to a Level I trauma center from 1 January 2009 to December 31, 2021. Patients were categorized into four groups: SIH, diabetic hyperglycemia (DH), diabetic normoglycemia (DN), and non-diabetic normoglycemia (NDN). Nutritional status was assessed using GNRI: high risk (GNRI < 82), moderate risk (82 ≤ GNRI < 92), low risk (92 ≤ GNRI ≤ 98), and no risk (GNRI > 98). Incidence of SIH and outcomes were analyzed across GNRI groups. Results: SIH was associated with higher mortality across all GNRI groups compared to NDN, with the highest rate (45.7%) in the high-risk group. Mortality decreased as GNRI increased in all glucose groups. NDN patients had the lowest mortality rates across GNRI groups. There was no correlation between GNRI and SIH incidence (p = 0.259). Conclusion: SIH significantly influenced mortality across all nutritional status groups, with the highest impact in malnourished patients. Although malnutrition did not affect SIH incidence, both SIH and poor nutritional status independently contributed to worse trauma outcomes. Background: Interdisciplinary collaboration is known to foster professional innovation and enhance student learning across different domains. However, the research on the effectiveness of integration of interdisciplinary learning in pediatric nursing education is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating game-based learning, an interdisciplinary approach to teaching, into pediatric nursing education's play courses. Methods: We used a mixed methods study with pre-test/post-test quantitative analyses and a descriptive qualitative analysis of students' reflection journals. Data were collected between August 2019 and July 2020 to gauge course effectiveness. Quantitative data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed using a t-test, correlation, and regression analysis. Qualitative data using students' reflective journals were collected and analyzed using content analysis. One hundred and three second-year nursing students enrolled in a four-year nursing program. Nursing students attended classes in university classrooms and served learning in a kindergarten or hospital in Northern Taiwan. Results: The subscales of Students' Learning Outcome in knowledge, abilities, and attitudes showed significantly higher mean post-test scores compared to pre-test scores: 26.15 (SD = 3.35) vs. 16.82 (SD = 4.49), p <.001; 18.03 (SD = 2.13) vs. 11.43 (SD = 2.95), p <.001; and 12.90 (SD = 2.12) vs. 8.72 (SD = 2.52), p <.001. Furthermore, scores on the Service-Learning Abilities Scale indicated a significant increase in communication, problem-solving, knowledge application, and cross-cultural competence. Integrating instruction to improve problem-solving skills and knowledge application predicts student learning outcomes. Qualitative findings revealed nursing students' reflections on integrating different learning areas, communication, problem-solving, and practical knowledge skills. Conclusions: Integration of interdisciplinary learning effectively stimulates learning among nursing students and enhances their knowledge, abilities, and attitudes toward therapeutic play, benefiting children's health. Our findings demonstrate that integration of interdisciplinary learning significantly enhances nursing students' healthcare-giving competence, particularly in communication, problem-solving, knowledge application, and cross-cultural competence as measured by the Service-Learning Scale. Integrating social service with integration of interdisciplinary learning exposes nursing students to diverse challenges and needs, thereby enhancing their communication skills, knowledge application, and problem-solving abilities. Introduction: The use of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) over conventional fractionated radiotherapy (CFRT) for early‐stage non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been advocated, but is also debated in the literature. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we adopted a target trial emulation framework to identify eligible patients diagnosed between 2011 and 2021 using the Taiwan Cancer Registry. In the primary analysis, the overall survival (OS) was the primary endpoint, whereas incidences of lung cancer mortality and radiation pulmonary toxicity were the secondary endpoints. Extensive supplementary analyses were also conducted. Results: We included 351 patients in the primary analysis and found that the OS was not significantly different between the SABR (n = 290) and CFRT (n = 61) groups. The propensity score weighting adjusted hazard ratio of death was 0.75 (95% confidence interval 0.53–1.07, p = 0.118). The secondary endpoints and supplementary analyses showed no significant differences. Conclusions: The OS of patients with early‐stage NSCLC treated with SABR was not significantly different from that of patients treated with CFRT alone. Simple Summary: Ovarian cancer is a prevalent gynecological cancer and a leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. Ovarian cancer is related to several oxidative stress-related diseases. Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is a neurodegenerative disease that is associated with elevated oxidative stress, while the relationship between OAG and ovarian cancer is vague. Consequently, we aim to survey the interrelationship between ovarian cancer and OAG. In this retrospective cohort study, people with ovarian cancer were recruited and age-matched with a 1:4 ratio of non-ovarian to cancer. The multivariable analysis exhibited a higher incidence of OAG in the ovarian cancer group than the non-ovarian cancer patients, which was more prominent in those older than 60 years and with ovarian cancer for longer than two years. Thus, the presence of ovarian cancer is associated with a higher possibility of later OAG. Routine glaucoma exams could be recommended for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer for longer than 2 years or who are older than 60. We aim to explore the possible association between ovarian cancer and the subsequent development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) using the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID) 2000. A retrospective cohort study was executed, and individuals with ovarian cancer were enrolled and age-matched (with a 1:4 ratio) to non-ovarian cancer individuals. A total of 4990 and 19,960 patients were put into the ovarian cancer and control groups. The main outcome was the presence of OAG according to the LHID 2000 codes. The Cox proportional hazard regression was adopted to demonstrate the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of OAG between the ovarian cancer and control groups. There were a total of 241 and 1029 OAG cases observed in the ovarian cancer group and the control group, respectively. The incidence of OAG was significantly higher in the ovarian cancer group than in the control group according to multivariable analysis (aHR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02–1.37, p = 0.022). The ovarian cancer patients older than 60 years showed a significantly higher risk of OAG compared to the non-ovarian cancer individuals of the same age (aHR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.16–1.63, p = 0.001). Additionally, ovarian cancer individuals with a disease interval of more than two years presented a significantly higher incidence of OAG than the non-ovarian cancer group (p < 0.05). Background: Given the increasing complexity of illnesses and rapid pace of technological advancements in professional training, it is vital to offer nurses ample opportunities to hone their clinical expertise and skills, particularly in ensuring the delivery of premier medical care. This study aimed to determine the factors and predictors influencing nurses' satisfaction with adopting mobile learning approaches in intensive care unit healthcare settings. Additionally, it sought to investigate the applicability of the technology acceptance model in explaining their inclinations and validating the measurement scales employed in the research. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design, utilizing a technology acceptance questionnaire and a learning satisfaction questionnaire. The survey was conducted in six intensive care unit departments. A total of 212 participants completed the survey as the primary instrument. Rigorous assessments were conducted to establish the content validity and ensure instrument reliability. Results: The findings demonstrated that perceived usefulness was the most influential factor affecting nurses' intentions to embrace mobile learning approaches, with perceived ease of use emerging as the principal determinant of perceived usefulness. Conclusions: Incorporating mobile learning methodologies is paramount to increasing the calibration of professional nursing education programs. By effectively integrating digital information technology and tools, nursing educators can overcome teaching challenges, deliver innovative clinical nursing education content through mobile learning approaches, and foster optimal development in the field. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between multidimensional factors, such as environment, health status, behavior, social support, and the well-being of middle-aged and older adults. Methods: This study utilized data from 2 waves of the nationally representative Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging Survey Report (TLSA) conducted in 2015 and 2019. The TLSA assesses socioeconomic status, physical and health status, the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5 index), and social support. Data regarding the degree of digital development were obtained from the 2020 Township Digital Development Report. We applied a generalized estimating equation (GEE) to analyze the influencing factors. Results: This study included 4796 participants. Residing in areas with a higher degree of digital development, having a higher socioeconomic status, and experiencing better physical and mental health were significantly associated with well-being. Furthermore, emotional and attentive support mediated the association between physical and mental status and well-being. Conclusion: People's awareness of searching for and receiving social support and medical resources is important for enhancing their well-being. Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant transformations in healthcare. Many countries began the rapid development and adoption of telemedicine to avoid the spread of the pandemic and created an innovative model for healthcare delivery. This study identified the critical antecedents that affected the considered healthcare outcomes via teleophthalmology in Eastern Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study's participants included residents of five towns in Taitung County who had experience with teleophthalmology. This study analyzed the structured questionnaires completed by the participants to validate the proposed research framework. Statistical methods were used to verify the research models, including descriptive statistical analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. The date of this study was from 1 October 2020 to 31 July 2023. Results: The results of this study reveal that the average monthly use of teleophthalmology by individuals in rural areas increased annually. Females tended to utilize teleophthalmology services more than males. There were no significant differences across any of the constructs with respect to age or educational level. Additionally, the patients' awareness of healthcare accessibility via and the communication quality of teleophthalmology simultaneously affected teleophthalmology's adoption and service quality, which in turn jointly affected health outcomes. Both healthcare accessibility and communication quality were the antecedents of the healthcare outcomes. The health outcomes refer to the impact of teleophthalmology on the quality of the patients' health and well-being. Additionally, teleophthalmology's adoption and service quality acted as mediators. Conclusions: This study's findings are expected to increase attention to the healthcare outcomes and antecedents of teleophthalmology to promote better telemedicine practices and services for rural residents. Aim: Chronic diseases are influential components of stroke, one of the dominant reasons for dementia and premature mortality. Environmental risks are risk factors for transitioning from stroke to dementia. This study addresses the transition behaviors in stroke and dementia development associated with chronic diseases and environmental risks. Methods: This study is an integrated survey of medical and environmental informatics concerning stroke patients' quality of life. A total of 10 627 stroke patients diagnosed in Taiwan were surveyed in this study. A covariate model and subgroup analysis were used to evaluate the influence of chronic diseases and environmental risk factors (i.e., divorce rate, unemployment rate, solitariness rate, temperature, and air pollution rate) on stroke and the corresponding dementia transition behaviors. Results: This study constructed a total of 98 covariate analysis models, consisting of 14 transition types [10 transitions from chronic diseases to stroke (5 metabolic risk states × 2 stroke states) and 4 transitions from stroke to dementia (2 stroke states × 2 dementia states)] by 7 covariates (i.e., sex, age, divorce rate, unemployment rate, temperature, air pollution, and solitariness rate). Among the 98 transitions, 26 were statistically significant. Conclusions: Sex, age, divorce rate, unemployment rate, temperature, and air pollution rate exerted a partially significant influence on the transition from chronic diseases to stroke. Sex, age, unemployment rate, and temperature partially influenced the transition from stroke to dementia. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at increased risk of progression to dementia. Whether it is feasible to engage this population in expressive arts therapy and yield effects on cognition and depression for older adults with MCI remained unclear. The aim of this study examined the effects of expressive arts therapy on the cognitive function and depression levels of older adults with MCI in day care centers in Taiwan. A quasi-experimental design was conducted in a sample of day care centers older adults with MCI. A total of 88 participants with MCI were assigned to the intervention or comparison group. The intervention groups participated in an expressive arts therapy for 12 weeks in addition to their daily activities. Data were collected at the baseline point and immediately after post-intervention. Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the effect of the intervention on the outcomes. At week 12, findings indicated that the intervention group had significant improvement in cognitive function and depression over time than the comparison group. Introduction and objectives: Functional decline frequently occurs in older adults in hospitals. The aim of this project was to promote evidence-based strategies for physical activity to prevent functional decline in hospitalized older adults in a medical center in southern Taiwan. Methods: This project was guided by the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework. Seven audit criteria were derived from a JBI evidence summary and a baseline audit involving 25 nurses and 30 hospitalized older adults was conducted to compare current practice with best practice recommendations. The JBI Getting Research into Practice (GRiP) approach was used to identify barriers to implementation, and strategies were developed to overcome those barriers. A follow-up audit was conducted to measure any changes in compliance. Results: After implementing the strategies, the pass rate of nursing staff improved in the physical activity knowledge test, rising from 56% to 88%. Compliance of nursing staff with providing physical activity instructions using evidence-based guidelines to hospitalized older adults reached 80%. The incidence of functional decline among hospitalized older adults decreased from 36.7% to 20%. Conclusions: The results of this best practice implementation project suggest that initiating physical activity as early as possible for hospitalized older adults once their medical condition has stabilized can help prevent functional decline. Objective The objective of this study was to assess the incidence and risk factors of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Methods We conducted a nationwide, population-based, cohort study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We performed propensity score matching (PSM) using a 1:2 ratio, resulting in inclusion of 1379 patients with SSc and 2758 non-SSc individuals in the analysis. We assessed the association between SSc and MACEs, using the multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression model with adjustment of time-dependent covariates, and investigated risk factors for MACEs in patients with SSc, shown as adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) with 95% CIs. Results SSc was not significantly associated with the risk of MACEs (aHR 1.04; 95% CI 0.77–1.42). Nevertheless, SSc was associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.76; 95% CI 1.08–2.86] and peripheral arterial occlusion disease (IRR 3.67; 95% CI 2.84–4.74) but not of ischaemic stroke (IRR 0.89; 95% CI 0.61–1.29). Factors independently associated with MACEs in SSc patients included age (aHR 1.02), male gender (aHR 2.01), living in a suburban area (aHR 2.09), living in a rural area (aHR 3.00), valvular heart disease (aHR 4.26), RA (aHR 2.14), use of clopidogrel (aHR 26.65), and use of aspirin (aHR 5.31). Conclusions The risk of MACEs was not significantly increased in Taiwanese patients with SSc, and our investigation effectively identified the factors independently associated with MACEs in SSc patients. Purpose: The present study evaluated the applicability of the sentence-focused framework to Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs) by examining the relative contribution of receptive/expressive noun and verb lexicon sizes to later grammatical complexity. Method: Participants were 51 Mandarin-speaking children who received cochlear implantation before 30 months of age. At 12 months after CI activation, parents were asked to endorse words that their child could understand only or understand and say using the infant version of the Early Vocabulary Inventory. At 24 months after CI activation, parents were asked to endorse the grammatical structures that their children were able to say using the Grammatical Complexity subtest in the Mandarin Communicative Development Inventory-Taiwan. Children's receptive/expressive noun and verb lexicon sizes and grammatical complexity scores were computed from these parent checklists. Results: Correlational analyses showed that children's receptive/expressive noun and verb lexicon sizes at 12 months after CI activation were all highly correlated with their grammatical complexity scores at 24 months after CI activation (ps = .52-.63, ps < .001). Regression analyses further revealed that verb lexicon sizes at 12 months after CI activation outweighed noun lexicon sizes in accounting for grammatical complexity at 24 months after CI activation. Background: Older patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are highly susceptible to adverse drug reactions due to age-related physiological changes and the presence of multiple comorbidities, polypharmacy, and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). Objective: This study aimed to develop a predictive model to identify the use of PIMs in older patients with CVD. Methods: Data from 2012 to 2021 from the Changhua Christian Hospital Clinical Research Database (CCHRD) and the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital Research Database (KMUHRD) were analyzed. Participants over the age of 65 years with CVD diagnoses were included. The CCHRD data were randomly divided into a training set (80% of the database) and an internal validation set (20% of the database), while the KMUHRD data served as an external validation set. The training set was used to construct the prediction models, and both validation sets were used to validate the proposed models. Results: A total of 48,569 patients were included. Comprehensive data analysis revealed significant associations between the use of PIMs and clinical factors such as total cholesterol, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), creatinine, and uric acid levels, as well as the presence of diabetes, hypertension, and cerebrovascular accidents. The predictive models demonstrated moderate power, indicating the importance of these factors in assessing the risk of PIMs. Conclusions: This study developed predictive models that improve understanding of the use of PIMs in older patients with CVD. Objective The aim of our study is to explore the associations between multiple types of workplace violence (WPV) and burnout risk, sleep problems, and leaving intention among nurses. Methods This cross-sectional survey recruited 1,742 nurses, and data on WPV experiences were collected through self-administered questionnaires. Work conditions, burnout risk scales, sleep quality, and leaving intentions were also evaluated. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associations of WPV with burnout risk, sleep quality, and leaving intentions, adjusting for demographic characteristics and work conditions. Results The study found that 66.7% of nurses reported experience of WPV, with 26.9% experiencing both physical and nonphysical forms. Those who experienced multiple types of WPV reported worse work conditions, higher burnout risk, poorer sleep quality, and a stronger leaving intention compared to those without such experiences. Adjusting for working conditions, logistic regression analysis showed that nurses who experienced multiple types of WPV had 2.12-fold higher odds of high personal burnout risk, 2.36-fold higher odds of high client-related burnout risk, 1.95-fold higher odds of poor sleep quality, and 1.80-fold higher odds of high leaving intention, compared to those without WPV experiences. Conclusions Strategies by hospital managers and policymakers to monitor and reduce workplace violence are vital for sustaining nurses' mental health, well-being, and preventing early attrition from the profession. Background: Behavioural intention (BI) has been predicted using other variables by adopting the technology acceptance model (TAM). However, few studies have examined whether BI can predict learning performance. Objectives: The present study used an extended TAM to investigate whether students' BI is a predictor of their listening learning performance (LLP) through vocabulary learning performance (VLP) in the context of mobile vocabulary‐assisted listening learning by using two mobile learning tools. Methods: A total of 129 college students with a pre‐intermediate level of English were recruited as participants, and a 10‐week mobile vocabulary‐assisted, listening‐learning course was conducted in 2022. In each task of this course, the students had to learn target words from a listening passage on Quizlet and then engage in listening activities on Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab. Quantitative responses obtained through an online questionnaire were analysed through partial‐least‐squares structural equation modelling. Results: The analysis results indicated that BI significantly predicted LLP through VLP. Perceived ease of use (PEU) and perceived usefulness (PU) were significant antecedents of BI. However, PEU did not significantly predict PU because of the difficulty of navigating between the two technological tools used in this study. The extended model demonstrated its effectiveness in explaining listening learning performance, as evidenced by an explained variance (R2) of 69%. Conclusion: The extended model validates the influence of BI on learning performance and it can also draw teachers' focus toward the significance of enhancing students' BI to improve their listening learning performance. This study aims to examine changes in body image (BI) over time and factors related to BI among patients with prostate cancer who receive hormone therapy (HT). A cross-sectional design and longitudinal design were utilized. Patients with prostate cancer who received HT were recruited from the urology outpatient departments in two hospitals in Taiwan between August 2017 and December 2020. Cross-sectional data were collected from 177 patients who had started HT for prostate cancer. Longitudinal data were collected from 34 newly diagnosed patients before receiving HT and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after HT. The variables measured included hormonal symptoms and distress, self-efficacy, and BI. The results showed that BI dissatisfaction ranged from 6.1% to 17.2%. Hormonal symptoms and distress (e.g. lack of vitality) were correlated with BI dissatisfaction. Background: The World Health Organization has identified methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) as the most effective treatment for reducing patient dependence on heroin. In Taiwan, MMT has been used as a heroin harm reduction strategy since 2006. Although the effectiveness of MMT in reducing heroin addiction has been examined quantitatively in prison samples, little attention has been paid to the experiences and perspectives of patients with heroin addiction receiving MMT. This study was designed to address this gap in scientific knowledge. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of individuals struggling with heroin addiction who are receiving MMT in the community. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research approach and semistructured interviews were used in this study. We interviewed 14 participants who had received MMT in a medical center in central Taiwan. All of the interview data were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Four themes emerged: (a) a chance to change one's life, (b) the helpfulness of MMT, (c) a sense of being restricted and controlled, and (d) need for support. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: This article fills a gap in current scholarly understanding of patient experiences and their perspectives on the helpfulness of MMT. Understanding patient experiences and perspectives is critical to informing and developing concrete strategies for clinical practice and MMT policy. Clinical professionals should assess patient needs and concerns to determine whether they are met by current treatment programs. Background: The demand for certified nurse aides (CNAs) in long-term care institutions is gradually increasing. Factors such as well-being that positively influence the work of CNAs have been inadequately explored in the literature. Purpose: This study was designed to examine the relationships among social support, self-efficacy, demographics, and psychological well-being in CNAs during the recent COVID-19 pandemic and to assess the moderating role of social support on self-efficacy and well-being in this population. Methods: In this quantitative correlational study, CNAs from 24 legally registered long-term care institutions were recruited as participants. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Social Support Scale, and the Chinese Happiness Inventory. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to test the research hypotheses model. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist was followed in this cross-sectional study. Results: A total of 148 CNAs were enrolled as participants. The mean age of the participants was 46.48 years. Social support and having children were identified as being significantly and positively correlated with well-being, and self-efficacy was identified as having no significant impact on well-being. Importantly, social support was found to moderate the relationship between self-efficacy and well-being. Overall, social support and having children were important predictors of well-being, with a combined explanatory power of 41.6% (Q² = .28, f 2 = 0.40). Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Self-efficacy was found to be less predictive of well-being in the presence of higher levels of social support. Being a parent was also identified as an important factor affecting the well-being of CNAs under stress. Managers of long-term care institutions should intervene to improve the CNA's social support. Background: The Gratitude at Work Scale, originally developed by American scholars, has been widely administered to mental health professionals and human service workers to explore gratitude in the workplace. No Chinese-language instrument is currently available for assessing workplace gratitude. Purposes: The aims of this study were to (a) translate the original English version of the Gratitude at Work Scale into a traditional Chinese version (TC-GAWS), confirm its factor structure, and analyze its psychometric properties among newly employed nurses and (b) develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the TC-GAWS short form. Methods: A psychometric study using a cross-sectional webbased design was conducted in Taiwan. Three hundred twentytwo employed nurses completed a battery of self-administered online questionnaires that included a demographic datasheet, the Gratitude Questionnaire–Six-Item Form, the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale-10, and the Thoughts of Quitting Scale. IBM SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 28.0 were used for data analysis, and Cronbach's alpha and Pearson's correlation were used to assess reliability and concurrent validity. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted. Results: The internal consistency and stability of the TC-GAWS total scale were .88 and .91, respectively. The exploratory factor analysis showed a satisfactory Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin value of .88 and a Bartlett's test value of 654.01 (p < .001), suggesting that 64.55% of the total variance was explained by the two-factor TC-GAWS. After item reduction, the CFA of the six remaining items of the TC-GAWS short form revealed adequate fit statistics for a two-factor structure and a second-order factor. Strong correlations were found between the 10-item and six-item TCGAWS (r > .94) in the two samples, suggesting good concurrent validity. The overall scores for the 10-item and six-item TCGAWS had similar convergent validity, with moderate-tostrong correlations for the Gratitude Questionnaire–Six-Item Form (r = .45 and .540), Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale-10 (r = .49 and .51), and Thoughts of Quitting Scale (r = −.57 and −.53). The CFA yielded a two-factor, six-item model that exhibited good fit with the latent constructs of χ² /df = 11.06/8 = 1.38, p = .198, comparative fit index = .996, goodness-of-fit index = .979, root mean square error of approximation = .045, root mean square residual = .030, and standardized root mean squared residual = .023. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Both the 10- and sixitem TC-GAWS instruments demonstrated good reliability and validity in nurse participants. The TC-GAWS may be used to measure gratitude in nurses in the workplace. Introduction: Integrating assistive technology (AT) into occupational therapy (OT) education is critical to educating students to utilize AT to enhance individual independence. This study aims to describe the development of a science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM)-based AT curriculum in OT and evaluate its effectiveness using the Kirkpatrick model. Methods: An 18-week STEAM-based AT curriculum was created with lectures, hands-on activities, and a simulation exam. A one-group pretest–posttest observational study was undertaken with 40 undergraduate students to gauge its effectiveness. Their professionalism was evaluated using a multidimensional checklist, whereas a satisfaction survey gathered their feedback on the curriculum experience. Results: Level 1: Participants reported high satisfaction (mean = 4.61, SD = 0.36), with a 97.5% agreement. Level 2: 95% (n = 38) passed the AT curriculum exam. Level 3: Therapists and patients expressed satisfaction with participants' AT skills (therapists: t (39) = 12.22, p < 0.001; patients: t (39) = 8.84, p < 0.001). Level 4: Participants showed significant improvement in professionalism (t (39) = 16.45, p < 0.001). Lastly, using the Kirkpatrick model, the STEAM-based AT curriculum passed the evaluation. Background: The 2005 revision of the code of ethics for nurses has been in effect in Taiwan for more than 17 years. Although this code has been smoothly implemented during this time, changing social expectations and ethical perspectives, advancements in science and technology, and the evolution of the nurse-patient relationship suggest this code should be once again be updated. Purpose: This study was conducted to suggest revisions to the Taiwan code of ethics for nurses necessary to meet current needs and address social and medical care environment trends. Methods: A multivariate research approach was adopted. The classification of the code of ethics for nurses norms in six international nursing organizations and evidence-based ethical and philosophical thinking literature were referenced, with the main notification demands incorporated into the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Nursing Workplace Controversy Reporting Platform. After drafting the aspects and provisions of Taiwan code of ethics for nurses norms, expert review procedures such as focus groups, Delphi expert consensus, and public forums were conducted. Results: After three expert focus group discussion rounds, a structured questionnaire was completed, and 50 Delphi experts in six fields completed the online questionnaire. After the second consensus round, the importance and clarity of the 47 ethical code provisions in the four aspects were determined with 100% and 99.8% agreement reached, indicating no significant difference in scores between the multidisciplinary expert group and the ethical code. The resulting revision proposed for the Taiwan code of ethics for nurses includes: nursing staff and care recipients (14 provisions), nursing staff and practice (13 provisions), nursing staff and the profession (10 provisions), and nursing staff and society (10 provisions). Conclusions/ Implications for Practice: In terms of education, the revised Taiwan code of ethics for nurses should be integrated into the nursing education curriculum of nursing colleges and used as teaching material for the continuing education of nurses. In terms of policy, these norms should be included as evaluation benchmarks and inspection items for hospitals. In addition, the attention and support of senior managers in institutions must be secured and a handling protocol for moral dilemma cases and related consultation mechanisms must be established. Nursing supervisors should be guided to develop the ability to address these dilemmas to help foster a positive workplace and a respectful team atmosphere. All professional groups should participate actively in promoting issues related to nursing ethics, organize seminars and continuing education activities, and make the revised Taiwan code of ethics for nurses and learning cases available online for reference by nursing staff nationwide. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is on the rise among young adults, with higher public acceptance than traditional tobacco. A study in Taiwan employed concept mapping to explore risk and benefit perceptions of e-cigarette use among college students. The study involved 100 college students from 11 Taiwanese universities, with 50 being e-cigarette users and 50 non-users. Data collection and analysis were done with the GroupWisdom™ platform. Participants engaged in brainstorming, rating and sorting their perceptions, which were analyzed using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analyses. The participants' mean age was 19.24 years, and 55% were male. This process resulted in the identification of 10 clusters encompassing 64 statements, with 3 clusters focused on risk perceptions, 6 on benefit perceptions, and 1 dealing with e-cigarette regulations. Notably, risk perceptions were rated higher than benefit perceptions. Non-users held significantly higher risk perceptions and lower benefit perceptions across the nine clusters related to e-cigarette use. Concept mapping proved to be an effective tool for understanding college students' perceptions. These findings can assist health educators in comprehending college students' viewpoints on e-cigarette use and in developing targeted interventions. This study explores the mediating role of self-regulation in the relationship between bullying victimization and depressive symptoms among adolescents, considering the moderating effects of gender and region. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 3984 adolescents aged 12–18 from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Netherlands. Data were collected via an online survey administered through Qualtrics. The survey included validated measures such as the Illinois Bullying Scale (IBS) to measure bullying victimization, the Adolescent Self-Regulatory Inventory (ASRI) to measure self-regulation, and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) to measure depression. The SPSS macro PROCESS was employed for data analysis, with model 4 used for testing the mediating effects of self-regulation and model 1 for assessing the moderating effects of gender and region. The results demonstrated significant associations between bullying victimization, self-regulation, and depressive symptoms. Self-regulation mediated the positive association between bullying victimization and depression, with notable variations across genders and regions. Specifically, male students in Hong Kong exhibited an increased susceptibility to depression when subjected to bullying. These findings underscore the protective role of self-regulation in mitigating the adverse effects of bullying victimization on adolescent mental health. Emergency medical retrieval services (EMRS) in remote Indigenous islands is rarely investigated. We analyzed the characteristics of patients who underwent EMRS in Lanyu, an offshore island of Taiwan, from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2021. The need for EMRS for Lanyu Indigenous residents (N=132, 3.83‰) was almost 1.5-fold and 100-fold for non-Indigenous residents (N=16, 2.64‰) and tourists (N=40, 0.04‰), respectively. The resident group had a longer hospitalization (12.0 ± 12.9 vs. 5.9 ± 11.7 days, p=.007). The tourist group had more near-drowning or decompression sickness (44.0% vs. 3.0%, p<.001) and secondary transfers (20.0% vs. 5.4%, p=.003). All the patients (N=12) that required multiple retrievals were Lanyu Indigenous residents. The Lanyu Indigenous residents, compared with the non-Indigenous residents, had fewer admissions to intensive care units (47.7% vs. 80.0%) and more in-hospital mortalities (10.6% vs. 0.0%). Alcohol use ranks as one of the most prevalent health-risk behaviors among Taiwanese adolescents. Possible selves—personalized future-oriented cognitions about the self—are significant motivators of one's actions, which may potentially influence adolescent drinking behavior. This study aimed to estimate the content domain-specific possible selves and their associations with drinking behaviors among Taiwanese adolescents. A total of 225 Taiwanese seventh and eighth graders from a public junior high school were recruited. An anonymous self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data during two time-points at six-month intervals. Results showed that having a "physical appearance" related hoped-for possible self and a "friendship" related feared possible self was associated with adolescent alcohol use after six months. Whereas, having the "physical appearance" related hoped-for and feared possible selves were associated with alcohol problems, at both, baseline and six months later. Background: Radiotherapy (RT) has numerous effects on the oral mucosa, primarily genetic alterations and changes in the microenvironment. The characteristics of oral leukoplakia (OL) may differ between patients who have received previous head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment with radiation therapy and those who have not. Due to a lack of data on this scenario, we aimed to investigate the surgical outcomes of OL by comparing these two patient groups. Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled a total of 224 OL lesions in 124 patients who underwent carbon dioxide laser (CO2 laser) surgery from July 2002 to Aug 2021. All patients had received previous treatments for HNC, with 59 patients undergoing only surgical approach, 65 patients undergoing RT, and 46 patients undergoing concurrent chemotherapy during RT. The analysis was performed on a per-lesion basis, not a per-capita basis. We investigated the associations of clinicopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes of OL lesions that developed from irradiated or nonirradiated oral mucosa. Results: The median follow-up time was 5.87 years. Postoperative recurrence of OL occurred in 30 patients. Malignant transformation occurred in 17 patients with the incidence rate 4.19% annually and 13.7% cumulatively. The average time for OL transforming into squamous cell carcinoma was 3.27 ± 3.26 years (median 1.82, range 0.11 – 11.90). In univariate analysis, non-homogeneous morphology (P = 0.042), moderate to high-grade dysplasia (P = 0.041), and nonirradiated oral mucosa (P = 0.0047) were predictors for malignant transformation. However, in the Cox proportional hazard model, only nonirradiated oral mucosa remained an independent prognostic factor related to postoperative malignant transformation of OL (P = 0.031, HR 5.08, CI95 1.16 – 22.25). Conclusion: In the population whose OL is strongly aetiologically linked to environmental carcinogens such as betel nut and tobacco, OL lesions that develop on previously irradiated oral mucosa have a lower risk for postoperative malignant transformation compared to those that develop on nonirradiated mucosa. Background: While the impact of telephone follow-up (TFU) for older emergency department (ED) patients is controversial, its effects on the Asian population remain uncertain. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a novel computer assisted TFU model specifically for this demographic. Methods: At a Taiwanese tertiary medical center, we developed a TFU protocol that included a referral and case management system within the ED hospital information system. We provided TFU to older discharged patients between April 1, 2021, and May 31, 2021. We compared this cohort with a non-TFU cohort of older ED patients and analyzed demographic characteristics and post-ED discharge outcomes. Results: The TFU model was successfully implemented, with 395 patients receiving TFU and 191 without TFU. TFU patients (median age: 76 years, male proportion: 48.9%) differed from non-TFU patients (median age: 74 years, male proportion: 43.5%). Compared with the non-TFU cohort, the multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the TFU cohort had a lower total medical expenditure < 1 month (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.21 − 0.47 for amounts exceeding 5,000 New Taiwan Dollars), and higher satisfaction (AOR: 2.80; 95% CI: 1.46 − 5.36 for scores > 3 on a five-point Likert Scale). However, the TFU cohort also had a higher risk of hospitalization < 1 month (AOR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.31 − 4.77) compared to the non-TFU cohort. Conclusion: Computer-assisted TFU appears promising. Background: Lymphedema is a debilitating condition that significantly affects quality of life due to its chronic nature and visible symptoms. Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) has emerged as a promising surgical intervention, yet its effects on body image and spiritual health alongside physical symptoms have not been thoroughly examined. This study evaluates the efficacy of LVA in improving symptoms, quality of life (QOL), body image, and spiritual well-being in lymphedema patients. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan, involving 44 patients with lymphedema undergoing LVA surgery. Evaluations were made pre-surgery, one month post-surgery, and six months post-surgery using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Multidimensional Body–Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), and a spiritual health scale. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Significant improvements were observed in lymphedema symptoms and QOL measures at six months post-operation. SF-36 results showed enhanced scores in nearly all domains, particularly in physical functioning and role-physical. The appearance orientation scores from the MBSRQ-AS significantly increased, indicating improved perceptions in some dimensions of body image. Conclusions: LVA surgery significantly enhances physical and psychological outcomes in patients with lymphedema, with marked improvements in symptoms, QOL, and body image perceptions. The findings suggest that while LVA is effective in addressing the physical and psychological aspects of lymphedema, it does not impact spiritual dimensions. Background: Deep neck infections (DNIs) can compromise the airway and are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia that is associated with several comorbidities. We compared the clinical characteristics of DNI patients with and without DM. Methods: This study recorded the relevant clinical variables of 383 patients with DNIs between November 2016 and September 2022; of those patients, 147 (38.38%) had DM. The clinical factors between DNI patients with and without DM were assessed. Results: Patients with DM were older (p < 0.001), had higher white blood cell counts (p = 0.029) and C-reactive protein levels (CRP, p < 0.001), had a greater number of deep neck spaces (p = 0.002) compared to patients without DM, and had longer hospital stays (p < 0.001). Klebsiella pneumoniae was cultured more frequently from patients with DM than those without DM (p = 0.002). A higher CRP level (OR = 1.0094, 95% CI: 1.0047–1.0142, p < 0.001) was a significant independent risk factor for DM patients with prolonged hospitalization. The lengths of hospital stays in patients with poorly controlled DM were longer than those with well-controlled DM (p = 0.027). Conclusions: DNI disease severity and outcomes were worse in patients with DM than those without DM. Antibiotics effective against Klebsiella pneumoniae should be used for DNI patients with DM. Purpose. To investigate effects and complications of endoscopic vitrectomy combined with 3D heads‐up viewing system in treating traumatic ocular injury. Patients and Methods. This is a retrospective interventional case series in a tertiary referral center in Taiwan, and we included patients of traumatic ocular injury, and they underwent endoscopic vitrectomy combined with a 3D heads‐up viewing system. Results. Fourteen eyes of traumatic globe injury from 14 patients were studied over a 30‐month period. Preoperative VA ranged from no light perception (NLP) to 6/6. Postoperative visual acuity improved in 11 of the 14 eyes (79%). Until 6 months after surgery, all eyes had attached retina. The median logMAR BCVA was 2.4 at the first visit and 1.19 at the last visit (p = 0.0028). No subject suffered from retinal detachment, endophthalmitis, or other severe complications. Conclusions. Vitrectomy using endoscopy combined with 3D heads‐up viewing system allowed early evaluation and intervention in traumatic ocular injuries. Background. Most frontline nurses lack sufficient readiness for effective disaster response. Therefore, designing a disaster management training program (DMTP) to promote nurses' readiness for disaster response is imperative. Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured DMTP on nurses' readiness for response to disasters. Methods. A randomized controlled trial was conducted. One hundred eligible nurses, recruited using convenience sampling from a medical centre in northern Taiwan, were randomly assigned to either the experimental (EG, n = 50) or control (CG, n = 50) group. Both groups received regular continuous nursing education. The EG received an extra two‐day (16 h) structured DMTP delivered by transdisciplinary collaborations through multiple teaching strategies (lectures, simulations, problem‐solving lessons, demonstrations, tabletop exercises, discussions, group presentations, and reflections). Readiness for disaster response, consisting of four subscales (emergency response, clinical management, self‐protection, and personal preparation), was assessed at baseline and 12 weeks after the intervention. Generalized estimating equations were used as the primary method of data analyses to evaluate the intervention effects. Results. Ninety‐four nurses (94%) completed the study, and 100 nurses were included in the intention‐to‐treat analysis. While participants in the EG had increased readiness for disaster response after training and at the 12‐week follow‐up, those in the CG exhibited no differences between baseline and 12‐week follow‐up. When the group × time interaction was examined, the EG had a greater increase in readiness for disaster response and its four domains, including emergency response, clinical management, self‐protection, and personal preparedness after 12 weeks, than the CG. Conclusion. A two‐day structured DMTP utilizing multiple teaching strategies through transdisciplinary collaborations is recommended to enhance hospital nurses' readiness for disaster response. This cohort study investigated factors associated with 336 Taiwanese family caregivers' emotional and cognitive preparedness for death of a loved one with terminal cancer. Caregivers' death-preparedness states (no-death-preparedness [as reference], cognitive-death-preparedness-only, emotional-death-preparedness-only, and sufficient-death-preparedness states) were previously identified. Associations of factors with these states were determined by a hierarchical generalized linear model. Financial hardship decreased caregivers' likelihood for the emotional-death-preparedness-only and sufficient-death-preparedness states. Physician prognostic disclosure increased membership in the cognitive-death-preparedness-only and sufficient-death-preparedness states. The better the quality of the patient-caregiver relationship, the higher the odds for the emotional-death-preparedness-only and sufficient-death-preparedness states, whereas the greater the tendency for caregivers to communicate end-of-life issues with their loved one, the lower the odds for emotional-death-preparedness-only state membership. Stronger coping capacity increased membership in the emotional-death-preparedness-only state, but perceived social support was not associated with state membership. Background: In patients with hepatic artery variation (HAV), feasibility and justification of robotic pancreatoduodenectomy (RPD) for periampullary lesions have been not been well established. Methods: A total of 600 patients with periampullary lesions receiving RPD or open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) were identified from our prospectively collected computer database. Surgical outcomes, oncological radicality, and survival outcomes after RPD in HAV (+) and (−) patients were compared. Results: The incidence of HAV was 16%, including 12.7% in patients with RPD and 23.0% in those with OPD. In the HAV (+) group, vascular injury rate had no statistical difference between the RPD (3.7%) and OPD (9.1%) patients, P = 0.404. Among the RPD patients, those with HAV (+) had longer operation time (8.5 ± 2.5 vs. 7.7 ± 2.0 h, P = 0.013) and higher vascular injury (3.8% vs. 0.6%, P = 0.024) when compared with the HAV (−) patients. There was no significant difference between the HAV (+) and (−) patients with RPD regarding blood loss, open conversion, vascular resection, and surgical mortality and morbidity. There was no survival difference between the HAV (+) and (−) patients with pancreatic head adenocarcinoma after RPD. There was no survival difference between RPD and OPD in the HAV (+) group. Conclusions: When compared with OPD, RPD is feasible and justifiable without increasing vascular injury rate for patients with HAV (+). Hepatic artery variation has no negative impact on surgical, oncological, and survival outcomes following an RPD, if it is accurately identified pre-operatively and appropriately managed intraoperatively. With increasing numbers of international students entering Australian social work programs, research has focused on the challenges of teaching these students due to perceived cultural differences and language comprehension. However, limited research has examined their experiences when transitioning to practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 international MSW graduates originating from 10 countries and residing across three Australian states. Participants' transition to practice involved similar challenges to those described in research for the broader cohort of newly qualified social workers. However, for the current cohort, initial concerns are equally focused on "fitting in", due to a learned perspective that their cultural and linguistic difference would inhibit practice. Drawing on ecological systems theory, belonging was influenced by contextual factors relating to levels of cultural diversity within workplaces; co-worker support; and participants' sense of preparedness from their education. For all participants, these feelings of difference lessened over time, with some later reflecting that their cultural difference and lived experience was beneficial to their practice. Findings suggest that the strengths of these diverse students could be more readily recognised during education and the field, for improving preparedness for practice, and inclusivity in Australian social work. Problematising international social work students and focusing on their perceived deficits can erode graduates' confidence when first transitioning to the field. The need for cross-cultural learning opportunities for educators, students, and field education agencies is highlighted for recognising the benefits of diversity and for improved preparation of early career social workers for the current professional field. Advances in training and education are needed in organisations where more culturally diverse graduates are securing employment, to ensure that international graduates are supported in early practice, and that diversity is valued in workplaces. Objective: The relationship between dental caries and stroke remains inconclusive. The aim of this study is to investigate whether different severities of dental caries affect the risk of stroke. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the 2000–2013 Taiwan National Health Insurance Database. We selected 23,662 patients with advanced/severe dental caries and 23,662 patients with incipient/moderate dental caries between 2000 and 2006. These patients were followed to the occurrence of stroke or to the end of the study in 2013. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) derived from the Cox proportional hazards models were calculated to assess the association between severity of dental caries and the risk of stroke. Results: The advanced/severe dental caries group had a significantly higher risk of stroke compared with incipient/moderate dental caries group (adjusted HR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.03–1.31). Stratified analyses showed that advanced/severe dental caries was positively associated with the risk of ischemic stroke in patients aged ≥40 years and with the risk of hemorrhagic stroke in patients aged <40 years. Simple Summary: Germline and somatic deficiencies of mismatch repair proteins (MMRd) are related to colorectal and endometrial cancers, but the survival impact in Asian patients remains unclear. We investigated the prevalence and outcomes of patients with germline and/or somatic MMRd. Germline and somatic MMRd were determined by gene sequencing and protein staining of tumor samples, respectively. We found that colorectal and endometrial cancer patients with germline MMRd have favorable survival outcomes compared to those without, regardless of somatic MMRd status. These findings highlight the importance of germline genetic testing when tumor MMRd is detected. Germline (Lynch syndrome, LS) and somatic deficiencies of mismatch repair proteins (MMRd) are linked to colorectal and endometrial cancer; however, their prognostic impact in Asian populations remains unclear. This prospective cohort study aimed to determine the prevalence and outcome of germline and somatic MMRd in cancer patients suspected of LS. Patients with colorectal or endometrial cancer suspected of LS were enrolled and underwent gene sequencing for germline MMRd (gMMRd) and immunohistochemistry staining of MMR proteins in a subset of the pathological samples (pMMRd). Among the 451 enrolled patients, 36 patients were gMMRd (+). Compared with gMMRd (−) patients, the 10-year relapse-free survival in gMMRd (+) patients was significantly higher (100% vs. 77.9%; p = 0.006), whereas the 10-year overall survival was similar (100% vs. 90.9%; p = 0.12). Among the 102 gMMRd (−) patients with available pMMR status, 13.7% were pMMRd (+). The 5-year relapse-free survival was 62.9% in gMMRd (−) pMMRd (+) patients and 35.0% in gMMRd (−) pMMRd (−) patients, both lower than gMMRd (+) patients (100%; p < 0.001). This study showed that having LS confers a favorable outcome in colorectal and endometrial cancer patients and highlights the importance of germline genetic testing following the detection of somatic MMRd. Background and Objectives: Many studies have confirmed the influences of various service quality dimensions on patient satisfaction and loyalty, but no existing theoretical model accounts for variation in how different types of patients evaluate service quality’s soft and hard attributes. This research gap may cause problems for administrators needing to decide how to distribute resources appropriately across multiple departments. Therefore, this study establishes a theoretical model of the differences between inpatients’ and outpatients’ evaluations of hard and soft qualities and compares such evaluations’ influences on patient satisfaction and loyalty. Also, to supplement statistical analysis and respond to scholars’ calls for more mixed-methods studies of health care quality, this research incorporates analysis of online reviews to provide a holistic, close to real-time picture of patients’ service experience perceptions. Methods: This study’s survey sample comprised 292 inpatients and 137 outpatients from a Taiwanese hospital. We used partial least squares structural equation modeling to test the hypothetical model and importanceperformance map analysis to identify factors that were significant to the service process but performed poorly. Finally, we used a text-mining technique to scrape 536 reviews posted on Google Maps, and Leximancer Portal to perform automated content and sentiment analyses on those data, as a means of mapping the critical concepts and themes that influenced patient experiences. Results: This study’s analyses support the ideas that both hard and soft qualities are critical dimensions of service quality, and that each has different influences on inpatients’ and outpatients’ satisfaction and loyalty. Specifically, the sampled inpatients strongly valued the hard qualities of the hospital but were not satisfied with it. On the other hand, soft qualities attracted outpatients’ attention and influenced their satisfaction and loyalty. In addition, content analysis revealed that soft qualities were the main reason patients left comments, whether positive or negative. Waiting time emerged as another critical element in triggering patients’ unfavorable reviews. Conclusions: Patient population type, whether inpatient or outpatient, has been found to impact perceptions of service quality within health care institutions. As such, health care administrators should be cognizant of this phenomenon and make informed and tailored decisions when addressing quality within their respective services. Emphasis on the development of both interpersonal and professional skills among health care personnel may prove beneficial in enhancing the patient experience and ultimately fostering positive online reviews. Background Recent studies suggest that 5α-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs) for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) result in abnormal retinal anatomical alteration. Objective To compare age-related macular degeneration (AMD) incidence in BPH patients receiving 5ARIs or tamsulosin. Design Retrospective, population-based cohort study using new-user and active-comparator design. Setting General population. Subjects Males with BPH, newly receiving 5ARIs or tamsulosin from 2010 to 2018. Methods Data were extracted from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We used Cox proportional hazards model with 1:4 propensity score (PS) matching, based on intention-to-treat analysis to determine the risk of incident AMD. Sensitivity analyses included an as-treated approach and weighting-based PS methods. We also separately reported the risks of incident AMD in patients receiving finasteride and dutasteride to determine risk differences among different 5ARIs. Results We included 13 586 5ARIs users (mean age: 69 years) and 54 344 tamsulosin users (mean age: 68.37 years). After a mean follow-up of 3.7 years, no differences were observed in the risk of incident AMD between 5ARIs and tamsulosin users [hazard ratio (HR): 1.06; 95% confidence intervals (95% CI): 0.98–1.15], with similar results from sensitivity analyses. However, increased risk of incident age-related macular degeneration was observed in patients receiving dutasteride [HR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.02–1.25], but not in those receiving finasteride [HR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.87–1.12], in the subgroup analyses. Conclusions We found no difference between 5ARIs and tamsulosin regarding the incidence of AMD in BPH patients. However, the risk profiles for AMD differed slightly between dutasteride and finasteride, suggesting that the potency of androgen inhibition is a factor related to AMD incidence. Aims Alcohol drinking is associated with central obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, which further causes metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, prior epidemiological studies on such associations lack experimental evidence for a causal relationship. This study aims to explore the causal relationship between drinking behavior and MetS in Taiwan population by using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Taiwan Biobank database, which comprised 50 640 Han Chinese who were 30–70 years old without cancer from 2008 to 2020. In MR analysis, we constructed weighted and unweighted genetic risk scores by calculating SNP alleles significantly associated with alcohol drinking. We calculated odds ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI) by using a two-stage regression model. Results A total of 50 640 participants were included with a mean age of 49.5 years (SD: 1.67 years), 36.6% were men. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of MetS per 5% increase in the likelihood of genetic predisposition to drink based on weighted genetic risk score with adjustment was 1.11 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.12, P  < .001). Analysis was also conducted by grouping the likelihood of genetic predisposition to drink based on quartiles with multivariate adjustment. Using Q1 as the reference group, the aORs of MetS for Q2, Q3, and Q4 were 1.19 (1.12, 1.27, p  < .001), 1.31 (1.23, 1.40, p  < .001), and 1.87 (1.75, 2.00, p  < .001), respectively, for the weighted genetic risk score. Background: Both the high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection and tobacco exposure are significantly associated with cervical neoplasm risk. Immune cells play important roles in carcinogenesis. However, it is still unclear whether immune cells have a mediating effect on the HR-HPV infection and tobacco exposure with cervical neoplasm development. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine how the increased white blood cell (WBC) count affects the relationship between HR-HPV DNA load and tobacco exposure in the development of cervical neoplasia. Methods: A hospital-based case–control study design was conducted with a total of 108 cases of Taiwanese women with ≥ cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I confirmed by biopsy, and 222 healthy Taiwanese female subjects with negative findings on a Pap smear were assigned to the control group. The study evaluated HR-HPV status and immune cell counts (WBCs, natural killer (NK) cells) and tobacco exposure by a self-construct questionnaire. Results: Both HR-HPV DNA load and tobacco exposure significantly independently increased cervical neoplasm risk (AORs: 1.28 and 1.42, respectively). Similar significant results were found for WBCs and NK cells, with respective AORs of 1.20 and 1.00. Moreover, increased WBCs (β = 0.04, 95% CI corrected: 0.01–0.07) and tobacco exposure (β = 0.02, 95% CI corrected: 0.01–0.04) mediated the relationship between the high-risk HPV DNA load and cervical neoplasm risk. Conclusions: Elevated WBC count acts as both predictor and mediator in cervical neoplasm development linked to HR-HPV DNA load.
