The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the relevance of the use of history in mathematics education. This paper presents an experiment carried out in France with sixth-grade students (n=108) in which an ancient number system is used, an approach that is commonly suggested in French sixth-grade textbooks but has previously been unassessed. Based on the data of a pretest and a post-test surrounding an activity on an ancient Chinese numeration system, a statistical analysis using Rasch modeling shows a specific added value of the history of mathematics for students with low abilities in mathematics. For these students, a significant increase in observed abilities of +0.67 logit in mean is measured with a large effect size (Cliff delta +0.52). This effect is then weighted by considering the regression to the mean (RTM) effect, leading to a value around +0.14 logit in mean and a negligible effect size (Cliff delta +0.10). So, this pilot study shows the important effect of RTM, which suggests a very strong rebalancing of students' results. In the last part of the paper, we discuss how RTM can nonetheless be positively interpreted in this specific context where students' disorientation is one of the purposes of history in mathematics education.

It is crucial to promote the role of women in surgery, particularly in the field of neurosurgery, which is still predominantly male-dominated. Without recognition and support, these talented and pioneering women may continue to be overlooked, despite their significant contributions to the field. One such remarkable woman is Professor Aimée Redondo, the first female neurosurgeon professor in France. She was born in 1944 during the last years of World War II to immigrant parents from Spain. Thanks to grants and scholarships from the French government, Aimée Redondo was able to continue her education. She excelled in high school and even passed the entrance exam for medical school on her first attempt – a rare achievement at the time. In 1975, at the young age of 31, she became the first female professor of neurosurgery in France. After completing her residency, she worked as a senior neurosurgeon at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris and then joined the newly established department of neurosurgery at Beaujon Hospital. For over thirty years, she was a crucial member of this department and served as its head from 2004 until her retirement. Sadly, she passed away in 2022 at the age of 78. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the origins of two of Kraepelin's three subtypes of dementia praecox (DP), catatonic and hebephrenic, are well understood, no similar clear narrative exists for his concepts of paranoia and paranoid DP, which require a consideration of both German and French sources. An important milestone in the French literature is the massive 524 page monograph entitled "Le Délire Des Persécutions" published in 1871 by Henri Legrand du Saulle which contained extensive, clinically detailed descriptions of a wide range of cases with prominent, organized persecutory delusions. Many of his cases reported auditory hallucinations (AH), and some bizarre, Schneiderian delusions. The delusional content could evolve to include prominent somatic and/or grandiose themes. Using a symptomatic diagnostic framework, Legrand du Saulle proposed that this syndrome represented an independent "species" of mental illness. He sought to give a voice to the affected individuals, including a chapter devoted entirely to their writings. He described several clinically fascinating features of such patients including how often they moved residence to unsuccessfully flee their persecutors and how delusional beliefs could be communicated to spouses and relatives. Unlike Kraepelin, he was little interested in their course of illness or rates of deterioration, except to note that recoveries occurred in 20% of cases. The clinical richness of this work substantially exceeded that in the contemporaneous German literature. Most of the cases described by du Saulle would fit easily into the two major non-affective delusional syndromes articulated 28 years later in Kraepelin's famous 6th edition of his textbook: paranoia and paranoid DP. • Two years after its discovery in 1798, the smallpox vaccine was introduced in France. • A privately funded vaccine committee was established in 1800 to evaluate its value. • An official vaccine society was established in 1804 to distribute the vaccine in France. • Vaccination activities were supported by Napoleon Bonaparte. • Different medals and tokens were issued to commemorate vaccine introduction. The smallpox vaccine developed by Jenner in 1798 was successfully introduced in France in 1800 with the support of Napoleon Bonaparte. The medals and tokens (coin-like medals) issued to encourage early-day vaccination activities are described in the context of the changing political situation in that country. In 1800 a private society of subscribers, led by the Duke of La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt was created, along with a Vaccine Committee charged with evaluating the safety and efficacy of vaccination before deciding if vaccination should be extended to the entire population. The Vaccine Committee published a positive report in 1803, and in 1804, the Ministry of the Interior established the "Society for the extinction of smallpox in France by means of the propagation of the vaccine". The creation of the Society made smallpox vaccination an official activity of the empire, facilitating collaboration between government agencies. The vaccine institution, established by Napoleon in 1804, continued its functions until 1820 when the Royal Academy of Medicine was created and took over those functions. This historical exploration of the development of the academic workforce in the UK and France was triggered by the observation of significant similarities in contemporary debates on casualisation, and segmentation despite their distinctive HE systems. We develop a quantitative history of academic staff to understand why the differences in the two HE systems are not as significant in respect to labour market and working conditions. The new data show that connected processes of casualisation, professional segmentation, and sectorial differentiation are used to manage tensions between massification and staff recruitment in both countries, in a context of declining and increasingly unequal distribution of resources, producing inequalities within institutions, as within the profession itself. The reorganisation of the academic workforce during three periods of growth of HE systems under traditional, Fordist and managerial influences has incrementally produced three groups of permanent, casualised, and precarised staff and a dual academic labour market. La volonté de doter les enfants d'un carnet de santé n'est pas récente. L'histoire peut être décomposée en trois phases. Une « préhistoire » qui remonte au milieu du 19e siècle sous l'action du Dr JB Fonssagives qui imagine un outil de prévention pour renforcer les compétences des mères et leur intérêt pour la santé de leur enfant. La diffusion est faible. Il y aura ensuite de nombreuses initiatives privées et publiques. La deuxième phase sera marquée par une prise de conscience nationale aboutissant à une obligation de délivrer un carnet de santé à tous les enfants nés en France. L'obligation a coïncidé avec la création des PMI en 1945. La généralisation effective s'étalera jusqu'au milieu des années 50 avec une utilisation variable. La troisième phase ira de 1950 à la période actuelle avec 7 versions progressivement améliorées. L'apparition des examens obligatoires dans le système GAMIN (1970) marquera une étape importante. Its story can be broken down into three phases. « Prehistory » dates back to the mid-19th century, when Dr. JB Fonssagives devised a preventive tool to boost mothers' skills and interest in their children's health. It was not widely used. Numerous private and public initiatives followed. The second phase was marked by national awareness, leading to the obligation to issue a health record to all children born in France. This obligation coincided with the creation of the PMI in 1945. Actual widespread use lasted until the mid-1950s, with varying degrees of use. The third phase runs from 1950 to the present day, with 7 progressively improved versions. The appearance of compulsory examinations in the GAMIN system (1970) marked an important milestone. At the time of the idea of dematerialization, we can draw some important notions from history, in particular the initial idea of involving parents. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic restrictions have placed many contractual parties under great strain to honour their agreements as contracts have become commercially impracticable and excessively onerous. This article explores the legal position in England, France and the Middle East under the doctrine of impossibility, impracticability and unforeseen circumstances. Strongly rooted in contractual autonomy and commercial certainty, this article argues that frustration in English common law is not sufficiently broad because the consequence (automatic discharge) is too rigid and does not allow a renegotiation of obligations. French civil law is more accommodating but only formally adopted imprévision in civil law in 2016, meaning it lacks traction. However, Middle Eastern civil law countries accept the doctrine as an integral part of their law and theory of justice, allowing obligations to be rebalanced in a more flexible manner. This article examines the formation of a belief in journalism as a worthwhile career in France and the United States. Using journalists' memoirs, early textbooks and novels depicting journalism, we show that a life in news became appealing in the late nineteenth century due to the novel mixture of material and symbolic rewards on offer. Promising pay for work that seemed adventurous and exciting, with opportunities for expression, the potential for influence and a connection to broader social values (e.g., fighting injustice, informing citizens), the possibility of these rewards formed the basis of a highly similar illusio – i.e. the belief that journalism constituted a social game worthy of one's energies (Bourdieu, 2000). Highlighting this emergent sense of worth fills a lacuna in historical scholarship, while also inviting questions about how these attractions are given life under contemporary conditions that often frustrate journalists' efforts to secure these rewards. Background: Urology as a separate surgical specialty is a nineteenth century European development. The background of the origins of this new specialty and the elements that were responsible for it have not been studied in detail, although this information is relevant in view of contemporary challenges., Methods: The existing literature on the history of Urology and original contemporary documents have been researched and analysed. The information gathered has been matched with documentation on general history., Results: Urology started as a specialty on its own, separate from (general) surgery, as a consequence of events and decisions after the French Revolution. Before the French Revolution (<1789) there was no well organised healthcare in France, but the French political revolution caused also a medical revolution. The need for further subspecialisation, also within surgery, as a consequence of the revolutionary principles, prompted some brave individuals to limit their activities to specific organs. Several revolutionaries were surgeons specialised in urogenital surgery, and prepared the way for a surgical subspecialty. Jean Civiale developed and promoted specific skills in open and endoscopic interventions of the urogenital tract. Finally Felix Guyon was accepted at the University of Paris as 'Professeur d'Urologie' in 1890, and changed the name of his department into 'Service d'Urologie'. Urology was a fact., Conclusion: Urology as a separate surgical specialty is the consequence of medical and non-medical developments after the French revolution.

Jean Baptiste Lucien Baudens (1804-1857) was a French military surgeon. He served in numerous military conflicts throughout his career. Baudens was an innovator and a leader. Going against traditional dogma, he was the first to attempt laparotomy in the setting of trauma. Although the first patient died, his second survived without further complication. Despite this historical landmark, little is known or written about him within the English literature. Jean Baptiste Lucien Baudens was a pioneer of surgery and the father of trauma laparotomy. He was a passionate educator and dedicated to the training of future surgeons.
