The study of nocturnal bird migration brings observational challenges because of reduced visibility and observability of birds at night. Remote sensing tools, especially radars, have long been the preferred choice of scientists to study nocturnal migrations. A major downside of these remote sensing tools is the lack of species-level information. With technological advances in recent decades and with improved accessibility and affordability of acoustic tools, sound recordings have steeply increased in popularity. In Europe, there is no exhaustive qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the content of such acoustic databases and therefore the value for migration science and migration-related applications, such as bird collision hazard assessments, is mostly unknown. In the present work we compared migration schedules estimated from citizen science data with quantitative temporal occurrence of species in four years of acoustic recordings. Furthermore, we contrasted acoustic recordings with citizen science observations and weather radar data from one spring and one autumn season to assess the qualitative and quantitative yield of acoustic recordings for migration-related research and applications. Migration intensity estimated from weather radar data correlated best at low levels with acoustic records including all species in spring while in autumn passerine species showed stronger correlation than the entire species composition. Our findings identify a minor number of species whose call records may be eligible for applications derived from acoustics. Especially the highly vocal species Song thrush and Redwing showed relatively good correlations with radar and citizen science migration schedules. Most long-distance passerine migrants and many other migrants were not captured by acoustics and an estimated seasonal average of about 50% of nocturnally migrating passerine populations remained undetected. This study investigates the effects of lakes in mountainous terrain on the evolution of supercell thunderstorms. With a newly developed radar-based, mesocyclone-detection algorithm, a recent study has characterized the occurrence and evolution of supercell thunderstorms in the Swiss Alpine region. That study highlights the influence of orography on both storm intensity and occurrence frequency. To disentangle the different influential factors, an idealized modeling framework is established here using the mesoscale model CM1. The modeling scenarios are based on a high-CAPE environment with unidirectional shear, where a warm bubble serves to initiate the convection. Mimicking the environment of the southern Prealps in central Europe, scenarios with a high mountain ridge, valleys, and lakes are explored. The effect on the supercells of the slopes, high-altitude terrain, and moisture sources emphasizes the highly localized nature of terrain effects, leading to a heterogeneous intensity life cycle with transitory enhancement and weakening of the supercell. The dynamic and thermodynamic impact of mountain valleys with lakes increases the range of atmospheric conditions that supports supercellular development through horizontal vorticity production, increased storm relative helicity, and higher moisture content. This influence results in a systematic location dependence of the frequency, intensity, and lifetime of supercells, as also found in observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many insects depend on high-altitude, migratory movements during part of their life cycle. The daily timing of these migratory movements is not random, e.g. many insect species show peak migratory flight activity at dawn, noon or dusk. These insects provide essential ecosystem services such as pollination but also contribute to crop damage. Quantifying the diel timing of their migratory flight and its geographical and seasonal variation, are hence key towards effective conservation and pest management. Vertical-looking radars provide continuous and automated measurements of insect migration, but large-scale application has not been possible because of limited availability of suitable devices. Here, we quantify patterns in diel flight periodicity of migratory insects between 50 and 500 m above ground level during March-October 2021 using a network of 17 vertical-looking radars across Europe. Independent of the overall daily migratory movements and location, peak migratory movements occur around noon, during crepuscular evening and occasionally the morning. Relative daily proportions of insect migration intensity and traffic during the diel phases of crepuscular-morning, day, crepuscular-evening and night remain largely equal throughout May-September and across Europe. These findings highlight, extend, and generalize previous regional-scale findings on diel migratory insect movement patterns to the whole of temperate Europe. Tree species maps derived from satellite imagery increasingly support forest administrations and nature conservation authorities with large-scale and up-to-date information. However, many species are often excluded or aggregated in classification tasks due to a limited knowledge of the most suitable predictors. Our study aims to gain a better understanding of optical and polarimetric traits for tree species mapping by examining Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time series from 61 tree species in temperate Europe. For a selection of 32 optical, polarimetric and structural variables, the principal component analysis revealed that Sentinel-2 variables mainly explain the variance in the data by contributing to the "seasonality" and "foliage color" components. Sentinel-1 contribute most to the "texture" component. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Tasseled Cap Greenness (TCG) and Radar Vegetation Index (RVI) were chosen as key variables for further analysis. Seasonality was found to be the most dominant aspect in all vegetation indices. Furthermore, the TCG was found to be useful to distinguish between early and late budding species. The RVI showed a large potential to discriminate conifers, which is attributed to the crown volume effect of C-band SAR. Using exploratory data analysis, we further examined the influence of management, biogeographical and meteorological factors on the time series from Fagus sylvatica , Pinus sylvestris , and Picea abies. The NDVI and TCG are relatively robust to different conditions. For the two conifer species however, we found strong spatial variations of the RVI which are presumably caused by different crown conditions across the study area. Using Sentinel-1 data could therefore lead to uncertainties in tree species mapping across large biogeographical gradients. This study contributes to the improvement of tree species mapping based on optical and dual-polarimetric data and thus benefits forest authorities and other stakeholders in their monitoring tasks and decision-making.
