When evaluating an area's seismic risk or resilience, it is necessary to use the spatial correlation to analyze the ground motion parameters of multiple sites together in an earthquake. These two large earthquakes in Türkiye provided the possibility for spatial correlation analysis of ground motion intensity measurements in this area. Based on the strong motion records provided by The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Türkiye (AFAD), this study uses the local ground motion prediction equation in Türkiye to give spatial correlation analysis of Intensity Measurements. This study gives an exponential model based on a semivariogram and compares it with the correlation model obtained from previous studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Türkiye have been advancing at a remarkable rate in the last decades because of the region's high solar energy potential. However, it is understood from the literature review that there are still limited research works on the optimization of the tilt angles of PV surfaces to maximize the solar radiation of the PV energy systems in this region. Therefore, this study focuses on a quantitative analysis of the optimal tilt angles of south-oriented PV surfaces and the amount of solar radiation collected by optimally tilted and tracked PV surfaces for all provinces by using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Surface meteorology and Solar Energy (NASA-SSE) horizontal radiation data for the provinces in Türkiye. Also, a numerical method is proposed to estimate the average daily solar radiation values falling on optimally tilted and tracked PV surfaces in 81 provinces and 7 geographical regions of Türkiye in this paper. An optimal tilt angles map has been created for all provinces where solar plants could be established. Solar data calculations have been carried out for all provinces, and the results are presented for the average total radiation amounts and percentage contributions that can be obtained in the case of installing fixed systems and tracking systems. It is found that the tilt angles of all provinces and regions are below the latitude values of Türkiye (36°′N–42°′N). Annual fixed optimal tilt angle values for south-facing PV surfaces are found between 28° and 36° throughout the year. It is observed that the daily average total radiation values falling on PV surfaces are considerably affected by the geographical and climatic characteristics even between the provinces with close latitude values in Türkiye. The results indicate that the tracking systems provide remarkable solar energy gains compared to the annual fixed systems. The proposed methodology can be used in the case of the implementation of a large-scale PV plant in any location in Türkiye, and this knowledge can be extended to the world thanks to low computational cost. MARRIAGE ,EXTENDED families ,INTERMARRIAGE ,SOCIAL status ,SOCIAL space ,CULTURAL identity - Abstract
Marriage in Türkiye, as in many societies, is of great importance in the reproduction of life, and the choice of a spouse often involves the intervention of families and society. Within this structure, it is seen that marriages usually occur between extended family members or the same ethnic/sectarian groups. Nevertheless, mixed marriages between migrants with different ethnic, racial, religious, and cultural identities and settled people have increased in the last 30 years. The fluidity of the transnational social space created by marriages is effective in this increase. This paper reviews the current studies on mixed marriages in Türkiye from the perspective of transnational social spaces, which express a way of life somewhere between two communities and provides a link between them. It reflects the ways in which this fluidity affects the political and social positioning of mixed marriages and the agency of marriage migrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a domestic and non-intermittent resource, geothermal energy offers countries a clean and sustainable energy option while setting their energy mix strategies. Turkiye, endowed with rich energy fields, stands out as one of the fastest-growing countries in geothermal energy. The dramatic installed power capacity increase and significant expansion in the geothermal energy market, particularly after 2010 following the initiation of the incentive scheme, are pretty remarkable. Nonetheless, it is also evident that geothermal energy investments in the country have shown a decreasing trend in recent years. At this point, this paper aims to reveal the opportunities and challenges in the development of geothermal energy as the first comprehensive qualitative analysis for Turkiye. Furthermore, it evaluates the diffusion of geothermal energy in Turkiye based on the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to gain insight into the Turkish geothermal sector. According to the interviewees, financial and political barriers such as high investor costs, insufficient incentives for power generation, and the lack of incentives for direct utilization, along with lengthy and exhausting permitting processes, still hinder the prevalence of geothermal energy utilization in the country. Respondents find that Geothermal suggests a huge opportunity for the Green Energy transition in Turkiye and aids economic development through increases in employment opportunities and household welfare using combined uses in district heating, electricity, and greenhouse usage. • Geothermal energy is essential in Turkiye's' green transition to net zero. • Semi-structured interviews are conducted to identify opportunities and challenges of geothermal energy in Turkiye. • The main challenges are financial and political barriers along with lengthy and exhausting permitting processes. • Geothermal energy suggests a considerable opportunity aiding economic development through increases in employment opportunities and household welfare. Daily weather observations measured by students and staff at Halkali Agricultural School (a school opened in 1892 on agriculture and animal husbandry during the Ottoman period) from 1896 to 1917 in Istanbul, Turkiye have been transcribed from the original publications into digital form and translated from Ottoman Turkish (the Perso‐Arabic script) to English (Latin alphabet). Over 55,000 observations of daily maximum, minimum and average temperature; rainfall, soil and under soil (0.25 m) temperature; humidity, pressure and wind speed were recovered. In addition, weather observations taken in Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute from 1911 to 1936 and taken in Florya Meteorological Station from 1937 to 2022 could inform long‐term temperature changes in Istanbul. The publication of a new historical data set that includes, for the first time, digitized and quality‐controlled daily meteorological observations in Istanbul will enhance the understanding of weather changes in Turkiye back to the late 19th century. These observations will be used to fill gaps in existing temperature and pressure records and to the improvement of the accuracy of reanalysis products prior to the 1950s. It will be the first data set publication of other parameters such as soil temperature, wind speed and humidity for that period in that region. Data are available on the CEDA Archive in csv file format. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to conduct a systematic literature review of research to provide an overview of the key findings and trends in studies on problem-based learning within the context of science education in Türkiye. To achieve this goal, descriptive content analysis was used in this study. Articles and graduate theses conducted in Türkiye between 2000 and December 2023 were included in this study. The Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (TR Dizin) and National Thesis Center databases were used to access the articles and theses. The purposive sampling method known as the criterion sampling method was employed in this study, resulting in the inclusion of 133 studies, including 37 articles and 96 graduate theses. To facilitate data analysis, we developed a coding form. The results of this study showed that PBL had a positive impact on 34 different skills, and it had no impact on 11 different skills. Across all reviewed studies, the most preferred research design was the quasi-experimental design. There was limited inclusion of final-year students in the samples at various school levels, and researchers mainly preferred physics subjects for their studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among all the sectors, the hospitality and tourism sector has been detrimentally affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aimed to determine how changes have been experienced specifically in the Turkish tourism higher education and tourism sector. Twenty-seven academics from the hospitality and tourism education departments were interviewed. Most agreed that restrictions have limited student access to hands-on practical courses and internships, which are crucial to developing necessary competencies. Moreover, the results showed the curriculum does not always meet the needs of the hospitality industry for a trained and skilled workforce. The challenge is to decide what else should be taught and what methods and teaching approaches should be used. As a result, industry-academia cooperation is necessary to reassess the curriculum programs to meet sector needs considering the pandemic impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study constructs a proposed model to investigate the link between environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures and ESG scores for publicly traded companies in the Borsa Istanbul Sustainability (XUSRD) index. In this context, this study considers 66 companies, examining recently structured ESG disclosures for 2022 that were published for the first time as novel data and applying a multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network algorithm. The relevant results are fourfold. (1) The MLP algorithm has explanatory power (i.e., R
2 ) of 79% in estimating companies' ESG scores. (2) Common, environment, social, and governance pillars have respective weights of 21.04%, 44.87%, 30.34%, and 3.74% in total ESG scores. (3) The absolute and relative significance of each ESG reporting principle for companies' ESG scores varies. (4) According to absolute and relative significance, the most effective ESG principle is the common principle, followed by social and environmental principles, whereas governance principles have less significance. Overall, the results demonstrate that applying a linear approach to complete deficient ESG disclosures is inefficient for increasing companies' ESG scores; instead, companies should focus on the ESG principles that have the highest relative significance. The findings of this study contribute to the literature by defining the most significant ESG principles for stimulating the ESG scores of companies in the XUSRD index. VIRUS diseases ,FELINE panleukopenia virus ,FELINE immunodeficiency virus ,CATS ,LEUKEMIA - Abstract
Simple Summary: Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a significant infectious agent in cats that is pre-valent worldwide. This study aims to evaluate the current situation in Turkish cats, compare them with other strains in the world via molecular characterization, and evaluate other parameters in cats with this infection. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a member of the Gammaretrovirus genus, which has two genotypes in cats: endogenous (replication-defective provirus) and exogenous (replication-competent). In this study, 550 cats were examined, and 112 of them (20.36%) were found to have the endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) genotype. EnFeLV-positive animals were also tested for additional viral infections, and 48 cats (42.85%) were discovered to be co-infected with other viruses. According to co-infection data, these cats were infected with feline coronavirus (FCoV) (27/112, 24.1%), feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) (14/112, 12.5%), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) (0/112, 0%), and domestic cat hepadnavirus (DCH) (13/112, 11.6%). Their age, sex, breed, clinical state, lifestyle (in/outdoor), and immunization data against FeLV were also evaluated. In line with our results, the prevalence of enFeLV and co-infection with other pathogens in cats admitted to the clinic for various reasons were discussed. The majority of positive animals in terms of FeLV (94/112, 83.93%) had clinical findings. We emphasized that the FeLV-positive situation of cats should be taken into consideration by veterinarians when planning treatment and vaccination programs. Additionally, in this study, we questioned the group in which our enFeLVs were phylogenetically located. Therefore, we performed a phylogenetic analysis based on a comparison with global FeLV sequences obtained from the GenBank database. The sequenced positive samples were in the AGTT subgroup within Group-II. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivated by the evolving global food landscape and its detrimental impacts on society, the environment, and health, this research aims to understand consumer perceptions, preferences and involvement regarding sustainable food products and consumption practices. To this aim, three countries were chosen for their distinct economic, cultural, and demographic differences (Spain, Türkiye, and Colombia), enabling an exploration of how these factors influence sustainability perceptions. The results show high levels of awareness, knowledge, consumption, and willingness to switch to more sustainable habits, although differences between countries were also found (price sensitivity in Spain and demand for information regarding sustainable food in Colombia). In addition, a group of consumers has been identified that is influenced by health, shows positive behaviours and perceptions towards sustainable food, and is not price sensitive. The study is significant, as it addresses the information gap between consumers, producers, and policymakers regarding sustainable food awareness. It seeks to provide insights into cultural influences on sustainability perceptions and aims to assist in developing educational programs and policies to promote sustainable consumption. The Mw 7.7 Pazarcık earthquake on February 06, 2023, struck southern Türkiye, causing typical liquefaction along the shores of İskenderun Bay. This liquefaction was characterized by lateral spreading, subsidence, and flooding. Subsidence-triggered sand ejecta, water flows, and opening cracks were identified in areas spanning approximately 2 km in length and 300 m in width. Based on coastal references such as lighthouses or harbor platforms, settlements of 0.8 m and lateral spreading of 0.4% were recorded along the coastal zone following the Pazarcık earthquake. According to camera recordings, liquefaction-related water and silty sand outflows occurred 29 min after the earthquake. The largest water outlet observed had dimensions of 2 m in length, 1 m in width, and 0.5 m in depth. Images captured at the moment of liquefaction show water gushing for 2 m. Granulometric analysis of liquefied sand eruptions at 10 locations on the coast of İskenderun indicated the presence of silty sand (SM). No water entered the settlement area from the sea during or shortly after the earthquake. The waters that flooded the streets of İskenderun were largely drained or pumped out after remaining for 3 days. The liquefaction of the main soil zone played a crucial role in the collapse or tilting of tall buildings along the shores of İskenderun.Lateral spreading and collapse on the shores of İskenderun were further exacerbated by the MW 6.4 magnitude Defne earthquake that occurred 14 days after the initial major earthquake. Field observations made 25 days after the first earthquake revealed a settlement of 1.7 m and approximately 1% lateral spreading in the coastal zone of İskenderun. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today, the problem of air pollution has been highlighted by rapid population growth and urbanisation, along with the development of industry. Over the last fifty years, much attention has been paid to the relationship between lichens and airborne particulate matter (especially heavy metals). The use of living organisms in air pollution studies is now widely accepted in many countries and the results of these biomonitoring studies are very important for future action. The goal of this study was to determine heavy metals in Kırşehir province using the bag technique, a biomonitoring approach, with Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf lichen and to develop a pollution map of the city. In November 2002, lichen specimens were obtained from an unpolluted region in the Yapraklı Mountains, Çankırı, and transplanted to 4 distinct places in Kırşehir. After 3 and 6 months of exposure, they were collected in order to analyse heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In addition, chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b contents were determined by Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) method. The findings revealed that the heavy metal contents in various stations are the result of industrial, traffic, and heating activities. As a result, P. furfuracea showed excellent bioindicator ability for detecting air pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first practices associated with specialization training in veterinary medicine in Türkiye were initiated in the field of military veterinary medicine in the 1880s. The first civilian veterinarians were sent abroad for specialization training in 1909. In the Republican era, specialization training in civil veterinary medicine was carried out in a planned and programmed system by the seven basic regulations issued by the Ministry of Agriculture from 1942 to the 1980s. In 1982, all graduate studies in the field of health sciences were included in graduate schools of health sciences, meanwhile, the Specialization High School, the main institution that trains specialists for civil veterinary services, was closed, thus specialization education in this field was terminated. In the following years, the legal regulations prepared for specialization training in civil veterinary medicine could not be put into effect, thus specialists could not be trained for about 40 years. In 2018, a new regulation was put into effect for specialization training in civil veterinary medicine. However, despite the end of the three-year transition period, the shortage of specialists in the field still continues, since education has not yet started. On the other hand, some details in the new regulation do not fully coincide with international practices. There is no doubt that specialization training in veterinary medicine in Türkiye should be carried out in line with national requirements; but it should also be of universal standards. The present study aims to examine the perceptions of xenophobia among students in higher education institutions in Türkiye. In this study, a correlational research design was used. The research data were obtained from 512 Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University students. The convenience sampling technique was utilized to select the participants. The Xenophobia Scale developed by Van Der Veer et al. (2011) and adapted into Turkish by Özmete et al. (2018) was used to collect data. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the data. The initial findings indicated that the participants exhibited a generally high perception of xenophobia. It is considered that this is a situation that should be taken into consideration in terms of migration policies and the social dynamics of the country. Logistic regression results showed that gender, age, school level, faculty type, traveling abroad, income, the place of growth, migration, multiculturalism, empathy education, being married to a foreigner, and having foreign friend variables did not predict the xenophobia perceptions of the participants. These results show the complexity of xenophobia perceptions of university students in Türkiye and that these perceptions may not be explained only by demographic variables in current research. Therefore, more in-depth analyses and consideration of different demographic variables or sociocultural factors may be necessary in future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative geomorphic analyses are usually powerful in identifying active tectonics across global orogenic belts. Our present study will focus on the Anatolian Plate which hosts a lot of recent catastrophic earthquakes in Türkiye. Six geomorphic indices for 100 sub-basins around Türkiye have been computed including local relief, slope, normalized steepness index (k
Sn )), hypsometric curve and integral (HI), transverse topographic symmetry factor (Tf), and the basin asymmetry factor (Af). The averaged kSn and Af values have shown four high-value anomalous zones, suggesting relatively high uplift rates featured by high river incision and regional tilting. The values of 0.35 - HI < 0.6 for basins with S-shaped curves imply intensive tectonic activities along the eastern part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), the Northeast Anatolian Fault Zone (NEAFZ), the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ), and the Central Anatolian Fault Zone(CAFZ). All results of the geomorphic indices analysis suggest a relatively high degree of tectonic activity in the following four areas, the Isparta Angle, the Eastern Black Sea Mountains, the South-eastern Anatolia Region, and the Central Anatolian fault zone. We further suggest that the eastern part of the NAFZ, NEAFZ, EAFZ, and CAFZ will be more active in tectonic activities, with a greater potential for strong earthquake occurrence. The main purpose of this article is to investigate the foundations of relations between Türkiye and the US and to analyze the impact of the Iraq War on relations between the two countries. The relations that developed in the context of security after the Cold War were naturally supported by economic aid. Although there were many problems in the fragile relations during the Cold War, the ties between the two countries were never completely severed. While frequent occurrences strengthened Türkiye's significance in the area, the divergent interests of the two nations have only recently begun to come into focus. The developments taking place in Türkiye's neighboring countries also attract the attention of the United States, and the repercussions of events in these regions are reflected in Türkiye, especially concerning conflicts involving Russia. In this context, although the relations between the two countries are often touted as an alliance, it highlights the fact that it leans more towards a necessity. At this point, the Iraq War has had a significant impact on the relations between the two countries and has led to the emergence and increase of problems between the two countries.
