The main purpose of this paper was to study the effect of spatial variability of soil hydraulic properties (HP) and vegetation parameters (VP) (e.g., leaf-area index, LAI, and crop coefficient, Kc) on modelling agro-hydrological processes and optimising irrigation volumes at large scale. Based on this analysis, the effect of partly overlooking the spatial variability of soil HP and/or VP inputs was verified on a 140 ha irrigation sector in "Sinistra Ofanto" irrigation system in Apulia Region, Southern Italy. Five soil profiles were excavated and the HP were measured in all the soil horizons. Additionally, measurements of soil HP were taken in the surface soil layer in ninety sites distributed over the whole irrigation sector. All the HP measurements were carried out using tension infiltrometer. Remote sensing applications were used to obtain LAI and Kc using European Space Agency's (ESA) Sentinel-2 images with 10 m resolutions. First, distributed (on ninety polygons with an average area of about 1.5 ha) optimal irrigation volumes and related deep percolation volumes at a depth of 80 cm, were computed using an agro-hydrological model and accounting for the actual observed variability of soil HP and VP inputs. The sector scale irrigation and deep percolation volumes were obtained by aggregating the distributed irrigation volumes. This was considered as the reference scenario (hereafter DVS—Detailed Variability Scenario). Then, reduced variability scenarios (hereafter RVS—Reduced Variability Scenario) were considered, where the information on the actual spatial variability of the soil HP and VP was gradually overlooked to find the minimum data set needed to still have sector scale irrigation volumes and related deep percolation volumes comparable to those obtained under the DVS. Results showed that overlooking VP (RVS-VP) variability did not significantly change the optimal irrigation volumes and the deep percolation fluxes. By contrast, neglecting the HP variability (RVS-HP) showed significant effects on both the irrigation and percolation volumes compared to the DVS. The main practical finding was that, at least for the area investigated in this study, hydraulic characterization of one soil profile in an area of approximately 30 ha provides sector scale irrigation volumes and percolation fluxes comparable to those obtained under the DVS, thus by accounting for all the observed local variability. This study represents the first investigation of soil ciliate diversity and community structure in the Marche region, Italy, encompassing both natural sites and agro-ecosystems. The main aims were (i) to assess the ability of ciliates to discriminate between different types of land uses, i.e., arable lands and possible farming management practices [organic (ORG) vs. conventional (CON)], and forest (FOR) sites; and (ii) to investigate the relationships among ciliate communities and abiotic parameters at the studied sites. Soil samples were collected twice from 10 sites (5 forest (FOR) (natural soils) and 5 arable lands under different agricultural management systems (3 ORG (minimum tillage) and 2 CON (sod seeding)). Ciliate communities were studied using qualitative (non-flooded Petri dish) and quantitative methods (ciliate counts from permanent slides). Soil chemical–physical (texture, CEC, N, OM, C/N) parameters were also measured. Qualitative ciliate analysis allowed us to identify a total of 59 species representing 33 genera, 20 families, 13 orders, and 7 classes. ORG sites were the richest in species followed by CON and FOR. Multivariate analysis showed statistically significant differences between natural sites (FOR) and agricultural sites, and between ORG and CON management farming systems. CCA analysis revealed a positive correlation between the ciliate species and silt, clay, and pH in ORG sites, and sand, organic carbon, organic matter, total nitrogen, C/N ratio, and CEC (cation exchange capacity) in FOR sites, suggesting the significance of these parameters in shaping the ciliate communities. Altogether, these results showed the bioindicative potential of ciliate communities in discriminating between natural sites (FOR) and arable lands, and their capacity to discriminate, at least preliminarily, between different soil management systems (ORG vs. CON). Fresh-cut leafy vegetables are produced in Southern Italy in very intensive crop systems under tunnel greenhouses in which continuous cropping has triggered soil organic carbon (SOC) depletion and the risk of degradation of soil fertility. A two-year trial of soil organic amendment was carried out on a private farm producing baby-leaf crops on a very poor OC soil (<1%). Biowaste compost, two types of olive pomace composts and buffalo manure were compared to evaluate their ability to recover a positive SOC balance and sustain crop growth and yield. The effects on soil health and crop system were studied by measuring different aspects such as SOC stock change and SOC sequestration rate, soil microbial biomass and nine enzyme activities, yields of rocket and concentration of nitrates in leaves. Soil amendments were distributed once a year at doses of 15 and 30 Mg ha−1 as fresh matter without integration of mineral fertilizers. In our study, the SOC stock improved in the amended soils in a range of 4–6 Mg ha−1, except for dose 30 of buffalo manure, with the highest values where biowaste compost was applied. Our data showed an increase in biological parameters in all the amended soils with respect to Control. In soil amended with olive pomace, however, compost mineralization rates likely did not match crops' nutrient needs so the yields of rocket were lower than with the biowaste compost and buffalo manure. Biowaste compost showed the best results as it balanced the best C conversion efficiency, the higher increment of SOC and yields of rocket. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
